- 0:03Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host Anna McGivern for
- 0:10August 16th. Today is National Roller Coaster
- 0:14Day. What better metaphor is there
- 0:16for life than the roller coaster?
- 0:19The anticipation as you climb that first hill, The stomach
- 0:23dropping plunge, the unexpected turns, the exhilarating loops,
- 0:29and somehow by the end of the ride, you're laughing and ready
- 0:33to go again. Each year on August 16th, people
- 0:38flock to amusement parks for thrills, screams, and to
- 0:41celebrate these magnificent machines of controlled chaos.
- 0:45But roller coasters are more than just entertainment.
- 0:48They're engineering marvels and they've been giving people the
- 0:52safe experience of danger for over 150 years.
- 0:56The first roller coaster in the United States was built at Coney
- 1:00Island in 1884, and since then these gravity powered adventures
- 1:05have evolved into incredible feats of engineering.
- 1:08Today's roller coasters can launch you from zero to 120 mph
- 1:13in seconds. That's 193 kilometers per hour,
- 1:18flip you upside down multiple times, and somehow deliver you
- 1:22safely back to the station with nothing but an adrenaline rush
- 1:25and a huge grin. But here's what's beautiful
- 1:28about roller coasters. They teach us something
- 1:31important about fear, trust, and the joy that can come from
- 1:36surrendering control. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:39from Eleanor Roosevelt, who once said you gain strength, courage,
- 1:45and confidence by every experience in which you really
- 1:49stop to look fear in the face. Eleanor Roosevelt understood
- 1:54something that every roller coaster rider learns.
- 1:58Facing fear doesn't just help you survive the scary thing, it
- 2:02actually makes you stronger for the next challenge.
- 2:06Think about your very first roller coaster ride.
- 2:09You probably spent the entire wait in line terrified, maybe
- 2:13reconsidering your decision with every step forward.
- 2:17Your heart was pounding before you even got on, but somewhere
- 2:22between that first terrifying drop and the final brake run,
- 2:27something magical happened. You realized you could handle
- 2:31it. You could face the fear and come
- 2:33out on the other side, not just intact, but exhilarated.
- 2:39That's exactly what Roosevelt was talking about.
- 2:41Every time we choose to face something that scares us,
- 2:45whether it's a roller coaster, a job interview, a difficult
- 2:48conversation, a major life change, we're building our
- 2:52capacity for courage. We're proving to ourselves that
- 2:56we're stronger and braver than we think.
- 2:59Roller coasters are perfect training grounds for life
- 3:03because they offer controlled fear.
- 3:06The engineers have done all the calculations, the safety systems
- 3:10are all in place and millions of people have ridden before you.
- 3:15The fear is real but the danger is minimal.
- 3:20It's like a practice round for bigger, scarier challenges.
- 3:25It would be cool if I could say that I used to be scared of
- 3:28roller coasters and my kids finally convinced me to try 1
- 3:32and I faced the fear and now I love roller coasters.
- 3:37That would be a good story, but it isn't true.
- 3:41I don't remember ever being scared of roller coasters.
- 3:44I love them. The big old wooden ones, the
- 3:48modern high speed looping ones. I love it.
- 3:52I love the thrill of the perceived danger with the risk
- 3:56engineered out. But as I get older, some of the
- 4:00rides I used to love are a little less appealing.
- 4:04But they're roller coasters. Still awesome.
- 4:08So today, in honor of National Roller Coaster Day, think about
- 4:13Eleanor Roosevelt's wisdom. What fear have you been avoiding
- 4:17that might actually make you stronger if you faced it?
- 4:21What roller coaster in your life are you standing in line for but
- 4:25afraid to board? Remember, courage isn't the
- 4:29absence of fear, it's feeling the fear and choosing to move
- 4:35forward anyway. Sometimes the best way to build
- 4:38confidence is to strap yourself in and enjoy the ride.
- 4:42That's going to do it for today. May your fears become your
- 4:45adventures, your challenges become your victories, and your
- 4:49life be as thrilling as the best roller coaster.
- 4:54I'm Anna McGivern signing up for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:59Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
