- 0:00Hey everyone,
- 0:00welcome to Spy Trader!
- 0:02It’s 6:00 PM on August 14th,
- 0:042024,
- 0:04and I'm your everlovable host,
- 0:06Jimmy "The Bull" Thornton,
- 0:08We've got a lot to cover in today’s episode as we dive deep into the latest happenings in the S&P 500 landscape,
- 0:16So,
- 0:16grab your favorite beverage,
- 0:18sit back,
- 0:18and let’s get into it!
- 0:20First up,
- 0:21let’s chat about some exciting — and some might say puzzling — moves in the market today,
- 0:27The latest US inflation data revealed yearonyear core consumer prices rose at their slowest pace since early 2021,
- 0:34This nugget of good news has calmed investors’ nerves and fueled optimism that the Federal Reserve might finally cut interest rates next month,
- 0:42In fact,
- 0:43markets are already pricing in a 25 basispoint cut in September,
- 0:47with expectations that we might see a total of 100 basis points drop by year’s end,
- 0:53Yup,
- 0:54you heard right,
- 0:55folks,
- 0:55half a point cut over the remaining two meetings of the year,
- 1:00In case you missed it,
- 1:01the S&P 500 saw a bounce,
- 1:04rising 0,
- 1:044% for the day,
- 1:06marking its fifth straight day of gains,
- 1:08Look at the financials,
- 1:10energy,
- 1:10and tech sectors leading the charge,
- 1:13It’s as if everyone just got invited to the same dance party!
- 1:17The VIX,
- 1:18which we commonly refer to as the "fear gauge,
- 1:21" dropped to around 16,
- 1:23down from a recent spike above 65,
- 1:25So,
- 1:26breathe easy – the market isn't so scared anymore,
- 1:29What’s happening on the global front?
- 1:31Good question,
- 1:32Asian equities also showed some love,
- 1:34with Japanese stocks celebrating betterthanexpected GDP data,
- 1:37Meanwhile,
- 1:37Tencent in China didn’t fare as well,
- 1:40despite posting a solid net income,
- 1:42Their USlisted shares dipped,
- 1:44proving that even tech giants are susceptible to wider economic uncertainties,
- 1:48One interesting tidbit is Fed Bank President Austan Goolsbee's recent comments,
- 1:52He hinted that labor market conditions could soon be more critical to the Fed’s decisions than inflation metrics,
- 1:58That's a big signal,
- 2:00folks,
- 2:00It means all those employment numbers coming out should be on your radar,
- 2:05In the political arena,
- 2:07remember to keep an eye on Japan,
- 2:09Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is stepping away from the Liberal Democratic Party leadership election,
- 2:14Political shifts always have an uncanny way of stirring market waters,
- 2:19don't they?
- 2:19Now,
- 2:20to the milliondollar question: What should you do with all these market cues?
- 2:24Here are my two cents:
- 2:27Sector Exposure: If you don't already hold positions in the financial,
- 2:31tech,
- 2:31or energy sectors,
- 2:32now might be a good time to consider them,
- 2:36Lower interest rates historically give a nice boost to these sectors,
- 2:402,
- 2:40Watch the Data: Keep a close eye on upcoming jobless claims,
- 2:44retail sales,
- 2:45and consumer sentiment data,
- 2:46These figures will be critical in judging how the market performs in the short term,
- 2:523,
- 2:52Cautious Optimism: While things look rosy now,
- 2:55remember it's a tricky market,
- 2:57With geopolitical tensions still simmering,
- 2:59particularly in Asia,
- 3:00a dose of caution is warranted,
- 3:02And just for laughs,
- 3:03here’s a joke for you: Why did the stock market go to school?
- 3:08To get a "stock" education,
- 3:10Ha!
- 3:10Okay,
- 3:11maybe I should stick to stockpicking and leave the standup comedy to the pros,
- 3:16Alright,
