- 0:22Let's let's talk Thanksgiving. I mean, the life of a coach.
- 0:26You're all wrapped up and what you got to do? Now? You got
- 0:28to play a game a couple of days after Thanksgiving? How does it go
- 0:31for you and your wife? And you say you got your family around you,
- 0:35where do you fit it in to have a little bit of a you
- 0:37know, family get together. Yeah, I mean that's something I've been dealing
- 0:41with my whole life, you know, being the son of a coach and
- 0:43then a coach myself. Thursdays. You know, I've played, actually,
- 0:49you know what, I've played a couple of those Thanksgiving Day games in the
- 0:52NFL and those are always fun. But you know what we what we'll do
- 0:57is we'll we'll get as much work as we can on done on Wednesday night
- 1:02that we typically do on Thursday. We'll come in a little bit earlier on
- 1:06Thursday after after practice, we'll have a Thanksgiving brunch with our players, and
- 1:11then, uh, you know, we'll be pretty set for Friday. Once
- 1:15we're off the practice field on Thursdays, so guys can get home and get
- 1:19with their families. We'll invite you know, some of the people around here
- 1:23that aren't from here and don't have a place to go over at our house.
- 1:26Our players will go to their coaches houses if they don't have a place
- 1:30to go, and we'll take a breath. I'm sure we'll, you know,
- 1:34because we're football junkies, will sit there and watch football all day long
- 1:37and into the night. But uh, you know, it's really interesting holidays,
- 1:42birthdays, when you're in this business, you really you really have to
- 1:48force yourself to stop and acknowledge them, because it's way too easy to just
- 1:53move past them because you're in this You're in this, uh, this routine,
- 1:57this grind of the season where every day kind of feels like groundhog days.
- 2:04So for us to be to take time on Thursday is really important and
- 2:10give thanks for all the blessings that we all have. Yeah, we all
- 2:15know how important family is to what what we do it lets us do it.
- 2:20So you're right, you got to acknowledge and you got to you know,
- 2:23say thanks for for everything your family does to back you up. You
- 2:27know, speaking of watching games in the NFL and watching these in college all
- 2:30the time, even the greats Jim make mistakes, Pat Mahomes Monday Night,
- 2:37Travis Kelsey, red zone turnovers, those guys. I always feel like they
- 2:42score every time to get in the red zone. But even those guys make
- 2:46mistakes. It's crazy this game. Yeah, and they even drop them off,
- 2:50right, So it's a it's a you know, you're never going to
- 2:55have a perfect football game. It's it's we're always after and it's what we
- 3:01work towards. But the reality of it is, it's a human game.
- 3:05It's humans out there playing and there's unpredictability, and your opponents are going to
- 3:08do things that you didn't expect them to do, and uh, you know,
- 3:13people are going to make mistakes and you know, so so often success
- 3:17is dictated by your level of consistency, you know, and your ability to
- 3:22minimize mistakes and capitalize on your opponent's mistakes. And so you know, that's
- 3:27what we try to do. And you know, it's a process and we're
- 3:30getting there and we're not there yet, but I think, you know,
- 3:34I'll go back to kind of the first segment when you talked about what our
- 3:37players say. Sounds to me like they get it. And if they get
- 3:42it and they understand what we're after, then we have a really great chance
- 3:46of getting there as a program. Yeah, you're definitely making strides regardless of
- 3:50what the numbers say this year. I think, uh, you know,
- 3:53we're going to talk to Jackson Mitchell in a few minis is why we're talking
- 3:57about takeaways with him? And are they coincidence? Do you create them?
- 4:01What is it? Because I'm watching the Giants the other day and they got
- 4:05six takeaways against Washington they end up springing an upset when no one thought they
- 4:11could win another game in the NFL schedule. So and Jackson was saying,
- 4:15well, it's a combination of both. I mean, you're trying to create
- 4:16these things, but sometimes things fall in your lap a little bit. Yeah,
- 4:21I mean, and you know what, I think a lot of its
- 4:25effort, you know, you're all the time effort to get to where the
- 4:30football is because good things happen at the football and you'll see times when a
- 4:32player might take you know, half a step, a step off in terms
- 4:38of just as a burst towards the football and he ends up being a half
- 4:42a step or a step off from making an interception. You're getting a fumble
- 4:45recovery. So you know, it is luck at times. It's being in
- 4:47the right place. At times, it's getting yourself to the right place.
- 4:53At times it can also make a difference. And then you know, it
- 4:56kind of goes back to what you said about running the football off in the
- 5:00run. If you can stop the run and make them throw it, you
- 5:01know, the more times of balls in the air, I think, the
- 5:03more chances you have to make plays, and the more times the quarterback has
- 5:06to drop back, the more times you have a chance to get a sacks,
- 5:10strip and scoop and score. And so for us, it's about just
- 5:14consistency of our performance and then consistency of our effort. And we think we
- 5:18do those things and we'll put ourselves in position to have a chance for takeaways,
- 5:24and then we got to capitalize and we got to get that ball.
- 5:27We're going to talk about you messing the next segment with Coach. One final
- 5:31thing on Jelanie Stafford. He's been playing him in the backfield. He's running
- 5:35the ball. He's scored a bunch of touchdowns. And it's not a gimmick,
- 5:39is it. I mean, it's legit. It works. And when
- 5:43people ask me from other teams, you know, broadcast as the center,
- 5:46what's up with that? I'm saying, the dude can get in our yard
- 5:48or two pretty much anywhere he is. So when how did that develop?
- 5:53How did that start? You know what? You say that and it's like
- 5:57he got stopped the other day, which was, Oh, I couldn't believe
- 6:00it. I couldn't either, because I was kind of standing right on the
- 6:04on the line the game because I knew we'd go for it on fourth down,
- 6:06and I was kind of expecting this to be first down, Austin Sport
- 6:10down. But we came up with that. It's because you know, we
- 6:13wanted to be able to hammer the ball up inside with a big man that
- 6:16had power and leg strength, and Gilanni had done that in high school and
- 6:20UH played running back and we're always looking for guys that have some versatility on
- 6:26our team that can play multiple positions. You have to be really careful how
- 6:30often you do it, who you do it with, because you don't want
- 6:31to take away from you know, what they do best. And for Jelanna
- 6:35that's play defensive tackle. But if you can find guys on your team that
- 6:39can be, you know, two way players or play important roles, then
- 6:45you then you capitalize on it. Jilani is one of those guys. And
- 6:46I give Nick a lot of credit, and I give Jilanni great credit for,
- 6:50you know, really sinking his teeth into it and knowing what to do
- 6:54and doing his best every day to kind of master something that's not necessarily natural
- 6:59to him anymore. Yeah, he was great in the post game with us.
- 7:02He is such a such a good kid, such a good player too.
- 7:05We appreciate him. Back with Jim Moore in a second, we got
- 7:09to talk about UMass. That's the date coming up on Saturday, and we'll
- 7:13do that in a moment. Is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on Learfield
