Transcript
- 0:00The seeker gets glimpses of spiritual opening, experiences
- 0:05of a vastness and a deep silence.
- 0:07When the mind falls utterly still, he may get a vision of
- 0:12forces and powers that act in the world and in himself.
- 0:17He may get the sense that he is crossing a threshold into a
- 0:20space where he no longer exists as a distinct individual, but as
- 0:26a part of something infinitely larger and more complex than his
- 0:30own individuality can encompass. He may experience a power that
- 0:36is entering his being, and he may feel the electricity of that
- 0:40force coursing through his entire being.
- 0:43He may have the experience of entering other worlds or planes
- 0:47of existence, meet beings, and experience powers that operate
- 0:51outside the limitations of the external reality to which he is
- 0:56accustomed. He may get a sudden sense of
- 0:59devotion or consecration or feel a deep aspiration.
- 1:06All of these experiences and many others help the seeker to
- 1:10define his spiritual quest and firm up his faith in the path
- 1:15and his destiny. Whatever experiences the seeker
- 1:20may have along the way, eventually he may come to the
- 1:23realization that chasing after experiences is not the
- 1:28objective, and that in many cases the desire for such
- 1:33experiences is actually contrary to the larger purpose, as that
- 1:38desire actually may tend to reinforce the ego rather than
- 1:42loosen its hold. Eventually the initial
- 1:47experiences and the excitement that comes with them recede and
- 1:51the seeker is left with the real work to be done.
- 1:55Inspiration and vision need to be converted into the work of
- 2:00inner exploration and the rewiring of the being in all its
- 2:04ways of thinking, feeling and responding to circumstances in
- 2:10the mind, in the heart, in the vital being, and in the physical
- 2:15body. The seeker runs into all of the
- 2:19limitations within his being, indeed within human and animal
- 2:23nature as developed thus far in the evolutionary cycle.
- 2:28He also meets with embedded drives and responses as well as
- 2:33cultivated ambitions, desires and needs.
- 2:38When the experiences withdraw, the seeker frequently bemoans
- 2:42the dark night of the soul. This is, however, something of a
- 2:46misnomer. It is the dark night of the ego
- 2:50ambition that has been frustrated by the withdrawal of
- 2:53the vitally attractive visions and experiences, including the
- 2:57sense of closeness to the divine.
- 3:00But it is not a reflection on the soul.
- 3:03If the soul is true, it remains focused on its aspiration,
- 3:09retains its consecration, and works through the temasek
- 3:13rebound that occurs with the frustration of the rajasic
- 3:16desire. The soul understands intuitively
- 3:21and directly that the work goes on and that it will take time.
- 3:28Srioro Bindo encapsulates this sense when he writes in Savitri
- 3:32a legend and a symbol quote. A moment sees the ages toil to
- 3:39express. End Quote.
- 3:43Sri Robindo observes quote. There are always difficulties
- 3:48and a Hanford progress in the early stages and a delay in the
- 3:52opening of the inner doors until the being is ready.
- 3:56If you feel whenever you meditate, the quiescence and the
- 4:00flashes of the inner light, and if the inward urge is growing so
- 4:04strong that the external hold is decreasing and the vital
- 4:08disturbances are losing their force, that is already a great
- 4:13progress. The road of yoga is long, every
- 4:18inch of ground has to be won against much resistance and no
- 4:23quality is more needed by the Sadak than patience and single
- 4:28minded perseverance with a faith that remains firm through all
- 4:33difficulties, delays and apparent failures.

- 4:443 in difficulty, page 39.
