- 0:13Speaker 1: to Daily Devotions with Pastor John. I'm John Stonge, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: today's devotion is inspired by Luke chapter 9, verse 23,
- 0:22Speaker 1: which says, And he said to all, If anyone would
- 0:27Speaker 1: come after me, let him deny himself and take up
- 0:30Speaker 1: his cross daily and Many of the people who showed
- 0:36Speaker 1: interest in Jesus during his earthly ministry were looking at
- 0:40Speaker 1: him primarily through a political lens. Some wanted to follow
- 0:44Speaker 1: him because they were certain he was going to raise
- 0:47Speaker 1: the nation of Israel to a place of prominence like
- 0:50Speaker 1: it enjoyed under King David. But Jesus wasn't speaking of
- 0:55Speaker 1: following him in those kinds of terms in these verses.
- 0:59Speaker 1: He tells those within his hearing that If anyone would
- 1:02Speaker 1: come after me, let him deny himself and take up
- 1:06Speaker 1: his cross daily and follow me. That's the reality of
- 1:11Speaker 1: following Christ. Jesus teaches us to deny ourselves. This doesn't
- 1:17Speaker 1: mean to punish, starve, or demean ourselves, but it does
- 1:22Speaker 1: mean that we should let go of our selfish desires
- 1:25Speaker 1: and the constant search for earthly security that competes with
- 1:29Speaker 1: Christ's invitation to walk by faith in Him. Jesus teaches
- 1:34Speaker 1: us to take up our cross. In saying this, He's
- 1:37Speaker 1: inviting us to assess the depth of our commitment to Him.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Would we be willing to suffer persecution for His name?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Would we follow Jesus even to the point of death?
- 1:50Speaker 1: Jesus is telling us that there's no turning back when
- 1:53Speaker 1: we become His disciples. Jesus teaches us to follow him.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Belief in Christ is where discipleship starts, but it continues
- 2:04Speaker 1: and grows deeper as we follow Christ daily. Our life
- 2:08Speaker 1: needs to be going in the same direction as his.
- 2:12Speaker 1: He calls us to follow him and journey through life
- 2:15Speaker 1: confident of his presence, power, wisdom and encouragement. Let's pray. Lord,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we thank you for your word, and we thank you
- 2:29Speaker 1: for the privilege that it is to be able to
- 2:30Speaker 1: read this portion of Scripture together today from the Gospel
- 2:33Speaker 1: of Luke. And Lord, as we look at this portion
- 2:36Speaker 1: of your word, we see what it really means to
- 2:39Speaker 1: be your disciple. You show us what it looks like
- 2:42Speaker 1: to follow you, and you tell us here that if
- 2:45Speaker 1: we would come after you, we need to deny ourself,
- 2:49Speaker 1: we need to take up our cross daily, and we
- 2:51Speaker 1: need to truly follow you without turning back. Lord, we
- 2:55Speaker 1: realize that there are many people in this world who
- 2:58Speaker 1: think of their relationship with you as an afterthought. But
- 3:02Speaker 1: when we look at a portion of Scripture like this,
- 3:04Speaker 1: we realize that a true relationship with you is not
- 3:07Speaker 1: an afterthought. It's something that's always on our mind. It's
- 3:10Speaker 1: something that defines our life. And if we truly know
- 3:14Speaker 1: you and we truly love you, it will be our
- 3:17Speaker 1: delight to put you first in all circumstances of life,
- 3:21Speaker 1: even in the midst of persecutions. and even in the
- 3:24Speaker 1: midst of seasons of trial or uncertainty. So Lord, we're
- 3:29Speaker 1: grateful for this challenge that you've given to us from
- 3:32Speaker 1: your word, as you teach us what it truly means
- 3:35Speaker 1: to live as your disciple. And we ask you for
- 3:38Speaker 1: the strength and the power that only you can supply
- 3:41Speaker 1: to help us live this out in the most sincere
- 3:44Speaker 1: way possible. We thank you for all of these things,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
