Transcript
- 0:07All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:11a Tuesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network back for another 6 hour
- 0:17block of Iowa based programming. Here's what's coming up with
- 0:20Trent Condon and myself, Ken Miller as we take you up until
- 0:232:00. At the bottom of the hour, we
- 0:28will get things underway on the program with Brent Bloom.
- 0:33Looking forward to catching up with Brent Bloom, the executive
- 0:37director. I want to say I hope I'm not
- 0:38giving him a title that's unworthy of his spot, but of we
- 0:42will and what's Iowa State going to do?
- 0:44And what was the We will collective?
- 0:47What, what does this change, if anything?
- 0:49Let the record reflect. We reached out to Brad Heinrichs
- 0:51as well, and he's unavailable this week but promised to join
- 0:55us next week. So we'll, I'll do the same with
- 0:58Heinrich at some point next week, but Brent Bloom is going
- 1:01to join us, our only guest in our number one look forward to
- 1:03catching up with Brent. What do we see?
- 1:06Is this the I mean, do you sense we're heading back to the bag
- 1:08man? Well, it's interesting because
- 1:12you put it that way and a few things that I've read, one
- 1:17comment in particular from Greg Sankey, the SEC commissioner,
- 1:20saying you wanted guardrails, this is what we wanted.
- 1:25You as coaches, this is what you wanted.
- 1:28We're going to follow the rules now.
- 1:30I hope so, that is. How do they enforce it?
- 1:33Well, the enforcement staff now has subpoena power, something
- 1:36that the NCAA did not have. That is going to be probably the
- 1:40biggest change when it comes to this.
- 1:42Will Wade, the strong ass offer. All the different things in the
- 1:46maturations that we heard in college basketball.
- 1:50He didn't. There was no subpoena power.
- 1:51He didn't have to hand over his phone.
- 1:54Now the hope is, the belief is. Turn over his phone and keep the
- 1:58burner phone in his back pocket. That that is going to be
- 2:01something that they're going to be able to.
- 2:02Have, I hope so, Trent. I'm, I'm anxious to see how
- 2:05they're able to enforce it 'cause I think, I hate to say
- 2:08it, but it seems like we're headed down the road path of the
- 2:11wild, Wild West yet again. We'll see where it goes, but
- 2:14your points spot on. Wandered enforcement.
- 2:16Here you go. Now enforce it.
- 2:18And another component to that is Pete Thamel with Now with ESPN,
- 2:24he brought it up and kind of equated it to this.
- 2:27You know, we had one year a bounty gate and a guy lost his
- 2:31job because of it. And a lot of people lost their
- 2:33jobs, lost their credibility because the NFL came down hard
- 2:38on that. That's what the NCAA needs to
- 2:41do. That's what this new enforcement
- 2:42wing needs to do Whatever first breaking the rules.
- 2:45Not to the school, but to the actual coach, to yes, the
- 2:48coaches that are involved in. It because if you see your
- 2:51brethren, it's not a slap on the wrist.
- 2:53It's not a last of scholarship or a couple of official visits.
- 2:57No, this is real. You are going to be impacted
- 3:00severely. You are going to be.
- 3:01So therefore, the a DS, you would like to think if they, if
- 3:05they do appreciate what their head coach is doing for them,
- 3:07would try to keep them under their thumb because they won't
- 3:10have a say in the I mean, if they're caught and found guilty
- 3:13and they're lose their gig, I don't really want to fire them.
- 3:16We're 10 and 2. There's a wink and a nudge and
- 3:18yeah, do what you need to to win games.
- 3:21Those days would be over. If.
- 3:24The enforcement staff actually does that.
- 3:27Going to be unbelievably fascinating to see where we go.
- 3:30We will go to the NFL in segment #2 want to start with not, not a
- 3:35ton of time, but we'll spend 6 or 8 minutes on the Green Bay
- 3:37Packers. I Eric's Alexander before we
- 3:39morph into more NFL conversation because we really haven't done
- 3:43that over the last, I don't know, a month or so.
- 3:46We've been busy doing other things.
- 3:47We'll do a little NFL segment today.
- 3:49And then Matt Poston's, I guess was ask Matt, though, you know
- 3:52how he foresees the enforcement as he covers the Big 12 for
- 3:56Heartland College Sports and that postings will be here at
- 3:59125 trends plays of the day, baseball heavy tonight, although
- 4:02there are a couple of WNBA games, the Fever getting 5 as
- 4:07they head to Atlanta and the Sky.
- 4:11And by the way, I got a little Mia culpa here.
- 4:14The ratings for The Fever and the Sky from Saturday night on
- 4:17CBS have been released. Not as gloom and doom as I
- 4:22thought that they were going to be. 1.92 million people watched
- 4:25the game knowing in advance that she wasn't going to play.
- 4:30Now what does CBS normally get on a Saturday?
- 4:32Great question, great question. I don't know because I don't
- 4:35watch. Because if that was on ESPN,
- 4:37that'd be incredible. That was on CBS Sports Network,
- 4:40Ryan or many of the other television partners a a
- 4:46broadcast network on a Saturday night.
- 4:48What do they normally? Get what do they normally?
- 4:50Get fair, fair question, Trent. And I think there needs to be a
- 4:53little more digging into those numbers before on the surface
- 4:56level. Oh yeah, that's good, because on
- 4:58the surface it is it. Seems good, yeah.
- 5:00Yes, with the WNBA. And the game was awful.
- 5:04It was. The game was awful.
- 5:05I I don't get it. Nor do I.
- 5:08It's AI have maybe a blind spot there as it comes to that sport
- 5:12and that superstar, yes. She's not.
- 5:14It's not very good basketball. No, she's terrible dressed as
- 5:18the part. I mean, showed up with a Big
- 5:21Muff hat on. You know, I think that's what
- 5:23those are called. It's June, but you know, you're
- 5:27making a statement and, and she did before the game.
- 5:29Then she went out and got 4 points, 4 lot of rebounds, lot
- 5:32of no no me bounds. Five of those.
- 5:35Five me bounds anyways but but Mia couple 1.92 but transport.
- 5:40I'd love to know what normally CBS on a on a Saturday night.
- 5:45That's not a place you find yourself normally, no, but.
- 5:47It's not since I'm in the, I guess, mood to little Mia culpa
- 5:53here and little egg over my face.
- 5:56And I've said this for a long time, I think.
- 5:58Kyle Tucker's Hellman outfielder, yeah.
- 6:01Maybe you felt he's a little overrated as a?
- 6:03Defender maybe? I thought that yesterday.
- 6:06I thought he was a waste of money.
- 6:07What a game. I thought for if they would have
- 6:09won the game and he would have kept it going, it would maybe be
- 6:11known as the Kyle Tucker game. Hits a home run, Just crushed a
- 6:14home run in the first inning. 1 Nothing Cubbies.
- 6:17It was the 6:00 and he had already made you look like an
- 6:19idiot. Home run comes a fire, and that
- 6:23was a Butte, wasn't. It boy, I'll say in a great tag,
- 6:27I think it was Horner. It was either Horner Swanson
- 6:29that applied the tag, but Kyle Tucker had a night last night,
- 6:33both at the plate in the outfield.
- 6:35And and this is that, you know, twisted the night front of the
- 6:38salted wood. This that's what this is.
- 6:39But I, I do wonder you watch as much baseball as anybody I know.
- 6:43And it's not just a team. It's you watch baseball.
- 6:46You're a huge baseball fan. If you had a vote for Gold
- 6:51Glove, because that's the topic that we had yesterday, you got
- 6:55to vote for gold, how would you measure it?
- 6:57You know, would you go in and look at catch probability, those
- 7:01kind of statistical profiles, the deeper analytics like you
- 7:04mentioned there, you know how how much would go buy the eye
- 7:07test? Assists.
- 7:09Because the reason that Tucker's bothered you a couple of times.
- 7:12He misplayed balls in the outfield.
- 7:13He takes bad routes. Is that equated, you know, in
- 7:17these metrics? Apparently one year it wasn't
- 7:18because I can't believe you just picked up this bad habit.
- 7:21Is it a metric that's so deep that even the voters don't even?
- 7:24Look at that, I wonder. But you mentioned that radius,
- 7:26well, if you take a bad route, your radius is going to be a lot
- 7:28bigger, right? It takes a lot longer to get
- 7:31there. Maybe that's something that
- 7:33increased that metric for for Kyle Tucker.
- 7:36I just wondered because it is something that you've brought up
- 7:39and I've seen the same thing, especially when you brought it
- 7:41up like, hey, right, you know, this is a Gold Glover and he's
- 7:44that. But the arm that's tremendous.
- 7:47He has that. And I would assume, and it's
- 7:49just an assumption that a lot of voters, and it's certainly for
- 7:52something that's a little more difficult to quantify, like an
- 7:55outfield rating and certainly a corner outfield rating.
- 7:58The dude's got a strong arm look.
- 8:00He threw out 15 guys this year. He's going to get my vote if
- 8:03it's just as simple as that for a voter.
- 8:05Yep, I agree with you. We'll see where it goes.
- 8:07But boy, he was really good yesterday.
- 8:09What's he going to command? Is he is his salary going to
- 8:12start with A5? I don't see I it's just crazy
- 8:16that we're even talking like this.
- 8:17Right. Once.
- 8:18So do you get it? You get it with 1.
- 8:20So it obviously has not worked at that level, but you certainly
- 8:23understand it what the youth. Was going to say he's just
- 8:26important as anything. Kyle Tucker.
- 8:28Now here's another mea culpa coming for me.
- 8:31The first month of the season, I said I didn't realize.
- 8:34I knew the numbers. I didn't realize he was such a
- 8:36good baseball player. He's a lot better baseball
- 8:38player. Well, how many times you watch
- 8:39the Houston Astros go out of your way, right?
- 8:42The players playoffs are playing the Twins.
- 8:44That's kind of what it was and that was it.
- 8:46Knew he was a good guy, knew he was a good player, didn't
- 8:49realize he was superstar type level or at least the fringes of
- 8:53superstardom. But then you get into that and
- 8:55you're saying how old is Tucker, 27/28/28 with him?
- 9:04Are you commanding those stretched out contracts now that
- 9:07are becoming the 14 years usually?
- 9:10Some of most of them have an opt out. 12 years, $500 million for
- 9:15Kyle Tucker, right? I just, maybe it's a mental
- 9:19block by me. I can't get there.
- 9:21I'm with you now. I also root for a team that is
- 9:24never going to be swimming in those waters.
- 9:25Who's who's the guy on the Twins roster that's going to come
- 9:28close to that? A young player that's about to
- 9:30break the bank. Well, we thought it was going to
- 9:31be Royce. We did.
- 9:32It's not. It's not.
- 9:33It's not at this point. Getting better.
- 9:36He's still a long ways to. Go Yeah, I agree.
- 9:38There's nobody at that kind of realm that you would point to
- 9:41and say he's going to command that kind of salary.
- 9:45No, I I don't think so either. Well, it's been going to be a
- 9:47big night of baseball here tonight is that's essentially.
- 9:51All we have. And I'm not going to watch the
- 9:53WNBA tonight without Caitlin's heart.
- 9:55I just can't do it without her. I really can't.
- 9:57I'm all in when she's there. But.
- 9:59That first game that she didn't play, I just want to see what
- 10:01they. Yeah, I did too.
- 10:02I but I didn't linger. By any means.
- 10:05Yeah, the intrigue kind of where I took a peek.
- 10:07And I took a peek and went back. And it's what we talked about
- 10:09too with this league. It's just not aesthetically
- 10:12pleasing. It's not a.
- 10:13Functioning is so bad, so bad the.
- 10:16Physical play, yeah, and grabbing the clutching and.
- 10:19Carrington, did you see her pull that gal's pony for the other
- 10:22day? I mean, come on.
- 10:24Anyways, Thursday is the start of the US Open.
- 10:29Trent, I can't remember a golf tournament that I was looking
- 10:31more forward to. Really.
- 10:33Major. I mean.
- 10:34The Masters comes around, it's kind of the official beginning
- 10:37of winters behind us. They cut down the Nets in
- 10:40basketball on we go to summer, right.
- 10:42And and the and the Masters is kind of that kind of that box
- 10:45that you checked. Oh gosh, we made it.
- 10:47So for that reason and the golf course, Augusta is Augusta and
- 10:50it's always pristine, But this is different.
- 10:53This just has a feel of we're going to see a test maybe that
- 10:56we haven't seen in a long time. There is no way I OK, I
- 11:01shouldn't say that I would be shocked if whoever wins this
- 11:05tournament about 6:00 on Sunday afternoon is more than five
- 11:09under par. I just, that's how I feel.
- 11:12I think that this tournament is going to be a bear.
- 11:16I think that this tournament and this golf course are going to
- 11:20maybe not embarrass some pros, but make us realize, you know,
- 11:23just a how good they are and how tough it is to tame this
- 11:29incredibly difficult golf course.
- 11:31So it's been there three times the US Open.
- 11:34I think the scores, I'm doing this by memory, but I don't
- 11:38recall the years. The first time it was there, the
- 11:41the winning score was 6 under. The second time it was there
- 11:44early this century was 5 over par.
- 11:49And then the last time it was there, it was 5 under par. 404
- 11:55hundred. Yeah, that was DJ.
- 11:57Oh, that was DJ so relative. So like 2016?
- 12:002016 Yep, 16 was the last time that it was there.
- 12:04A couple of things is here. Who won it with an over par
- 12:07score? It was some stiff.
- 12:09Yeah, I just have, I have the 16 leader board here in front of
- 12:11me. But yeah, it was kind of a guy
- 12:13deeper down the list. I should say Stiff.
- 12:14He's a pro, yeah. But you want AUS Open.
- 12:17That's stiff. Yeah.
- 12:19The leader board, A couple of things jumped out to me.
- 12:23Jim Furek, he finished second. He was in a tie with Shane
- 12:26Lowry. Probably have him part of your
- 12:28card. I do.
- 12:30And Scott Pearcy, a ho hum down the middle.
- 12:33Not a long hitter. Also in the top 10.
- 12:36Kevin Nah got a long hitter. So keep it in the middle of the
- 12:40fairway and you can. Score Zach Johnson.
- 12:42Where was he in this tournament? He finished eighth.
- 12:44It was 2 over. Daniel Summerhay is another guy
- 12:47from a ways back. He had one good round.
- 12:51This is not, at least in the past, things change and there
- 12:54has been an update to Oman. But this is a course that in the
- 12:58past, you don't have to be a bomber.
- 13:00Keep it straight. One of the most incredible
- 13:03things that I found as I started doing my research for the week
- 13:07was getting up and down, getting up and down.
- 13:11You missed the green. Get up and down proposition for
- 13:14most PGA players is, you know, well north of 65% getting up and
- 13:17down for par. What is it at this tournament?
- 13:20The last time out eight years ago, nine years ago it was 10 of
- 13:26the 18 holes had a percentage under 40% getting up and down.
- 13:31These are those tabletop greens. Another component that is
- 13:35different than almost any other golf course is your shot into
- 13:39the green. More times than that is going to
- 13:41end up 4050 sixty feet past where you initially hit it.
- 13:46So it's kind of got a little Open Championship feel to it.
- 13:50Bang, absolutely. That is a great way to look at
- 13:54it. And certainly the approaches
- 13:55where you're going to have to run the ball, you're going to,
- 13:57it's not plug it up there. You're not going hunting flags.
- 14:00No, that is not the way that this golf course plays.
- 14:03This is not the way that these greens play.
- 14:06Getting up and down for me is at the top of my list this week
- 14:09ahead of even driving accuracy, getting up and down, guys that
- 14:13are doing that at a high level. So we'll put that into my
- 14:16system. I don't have a system, but I
- 14:17will take a look at those numbers because I've kind of
- 14:19zeroing in on my plays this week and I'll have those ready for
- 14:22tomorrow. I I did mine where I sent you
- 14:25the script for our media com show.
- 14:26So I looked I did that last night watching stuff because the
- 14:29hockey game. So I'll get to that in a second.
- 14:30Yeah, if, if you're, if you're an Oiler fan and I'm rooting for
- 14:33Edmonton. Did you bet?
- 14:37Will you bet, Rory? I will not, you won't.
- 14:40He is a cross off. What's wrong with him?
- 14:43Do you think that he's he's got his?
- 14:45He's going to be in a little B. He kind of is, isn't he?
- 14:48Is he is. He kind of lost his drive.
- 14:50I mean, he finally got his majors, his career Grand Slam,
- 14:54The one thing that eluded him. And now that he's that, he's got
- 14:58that he just, I don't deserve. The drive's been there, Trent.
- 15:02I think that's a fairway to look at it.
- 15:04I think we've seen this for other athletes in different
- 15:07realms. When you hit that apex, I
- 15:09remember years ago I was reading John Mcenroe's autobiography,
- 15:14which is incredible. And just even if you're not a
- 15:16tennis fan, he's just such a character, obviously.
- 15:20And he talked about that. He talked about it was for him
- 15:23getting to #1 getting for note and the drive that it took.
- 15:26He wasn't the most talented guy, but to get to that level and
- 15:29then he got there, it's. Fun to watch though.
- 15:31Oh God, he was. Or listen to.
- 15:33But once he got there, he thought there was going to be,
- 15:37you know, confetti flying. There's going to be this.
- 15:39And it wasn't, it's just, OK, you did it.
- 15:42There's a tournament coming up next week.
- 15:44Now you're #1 go prove it. There wasn't that common.
- 15:48And maybe that would because Rory, for McEnroe, it was just
- 15:52building, building, building. And he got there within a few
- 15:54years. For Rory, this has been almost a
- 15:57decade of waiting for that moment.
- 15:59And then he got there. Nothing changed.
- 16:02No, nothing changed other than the.
- 16:03Fact that you know he checked a a personal box.
- 16:07But that was it. His life didn't change one iota
- 16:09because. There's one major championship.
- 16:11Right. He has known everywhere he goes.
- 16:13Is that more known? No.
- 16:14Because he didn't get a bigger house.
- 16:15He can't right? They ran out of land on the
- 16:17place. You should see his house.
- 16:19And it's something that hadn't crossed my mind, but I think you
- 16:22absolutely nailed something that it makes sense the.
- 16:25Motivation doesn't seem to be there for I'm betting them all.
- 16:30That's all. That said, I'm going to because
- 16:33he's, I mean, you won't see a price like this on Rory's.
- 16:36He's double digits. I mean, Scheffler's always going
- 16:38to be tonight, always. But for the foreseeable future,
- 16:41he's unbedtable. He truly is unbedtable.
- 16:44What's his price right now? Can you get?
- 16:464 to one on him. I bet you can't.
- 16:48At Circa, which is the best price that I have seen?
- 16:51Usually for golf it is. Scheffler's plus 290.
- 16:56De Chambo plus 7:30 and the third betting choice is the
- 17:00first ticket that I made. What is it?
- 17:03John ROM Rom's live this week and you have been trying to talk
- 17:07me into it for the last year. Plus you.
- 17:09Know and I left them off the card this week.
- 17:11I didn't use them. This is the week, huh?
- 17:13I didn't include them. I I know the way the last what
- 17:17four holes went at the PGA. He looks different.
- 17:22He he seems different mentally. That's the guy that's still
- 17:25competing at a high level. His game wasn't quite there
- 17:28going into the Masters. Former number ones he was a #1.
- 17:31I didn't think his game was there going to the Masters,
- 17:33that's why I couldn't get there and what we saw, a couple of
- 17:36blips that he had leading in the PGA, that's why it wasn't on
- 17:38him. I think he is rounding into
- 17:40form. And what's his price?
- 17:4112 to 1, so better than you can get or a lower price than it is
- 17:46in Rory. Rory's plus 1450 and then he get
- 17:48into Xander at 18 to 1. Morikawa, 22 to one Goldberg, 23
- 17:53to one What's Tommy Fleetwood, 32 to one You're going to hit
- 17:58one time on golf Jesus, aren't you?
- 18:01All right, from Golf Jesus to Mick Jesus and his Edmonton
- 18:06Oilers, Florida's just a better team.
- 18:10And Florida's is dragging Edmonton to play their style of
- 18:17game. And that's not what the Oilers
- 18:19want to do. Florida wants to take you into
- 18:22the corner, put a glove, the palm of your glove, and God,
- 18:25they stink into your face and, and, and rub it in there.
- 18:28They want to slash the back of your skates.
- 18:30They want to cross check you knowing that you're going to
- 18:34retaliate at some point. And you know what always
- 18:36happens? They get the second guy, not the
- 18:39first guy. And Edmonton could not stay out
- 18:42of the penalty box last night and Stewart Skinner looked like
- 18:45bad Stewart Skinner on a lot of the goals last night.
- 18:49And, and I, I hate to say it, 'cause I want it to go to the
- 18:53north of the border one of these years.
- 18:55Now I've got a, I've got a city picked out where I'd like it to
- 18:58go to. And then it started.
- 19:01Not Calgary. Not Vancouver.
- 19:03You know what? Toronto, Montreal, Nope, Nope,
- 19:05not those. But anyways, regardless of that,
- 19:08I think Florida's going to win it.
- 19:09I again, and we've said it going in that they look like the best
- 19:12team to meet and they look like the best team and especially if
- 19:16they can drag the Oilers into the mud with them and that's
- 19:20what they did and that's the seemingly the way that this
- 19:23thing is going to go. I would be surprised if
- 19:26Edmonton's able to come back. Look, they did last year.
- 19:29They couldn't quite seal the deal, but man, it's here.
- 19:31Seems like we're headed to maybe game, maybe 5, maybe 6, but we
- 19:37shall see. Is it time to pull the plug on
- 19:40Stewart Skinner? Yes, I wondered.
- 19:42I wonder what they're going to do on Thursday.
- 19:44Picard played the They pulled Skinner last night.
- 19:46Picard came in. I think he gave up one.
- 19:48He did? Yep.
- 19:49But I think. He 7 saves and eight.
- 19:51Is that what it was? Yep.
- 19:52So I think you have to go back. Boy, the game got a little
- 19:54nasty. Did you see all the the stuff
- 19:56with you now that looked like old school Hawk?
- 19:58Oh yeah, I I was old time. I was checked out at that.
- 20:00Point were you Yeah, the only reason I stuck there just to see
- 20:03if the boys would get a little nasty and they.
- 20:06Did and you like? Yeah, I do.
- 20:08I do. Let's get Jeff real quick and
- 20:10then we will talk to Brent Bloom.
- 20:13Brent Bloom from We will. What does this do for for we
- 20:16will. What does this do for Iowa State
- 20:18is a business as usual. Does he think the bagman is not,
- 20:21I'm not saying it's an Iowa State.
- 20:23I'm does he is he saying that they're believe that the bagman
- 20:26is going to make an appearance? We go back to the wild, Wild
- 20:29West Bloom on that coming up at the bottom of the hour, Jeff
- 20:33joins us. Hi, Jeff.
- 20:33How are you? Doing well first thing, Oakmont.
- 20:38This is the 10th U.S. Open at Oakmont.
- 20:41Just off the top, I had some of the winners, Ernie Ells, Jack,
- 20:45Ben Hogan on Hell, Cabrera and then DJ.
- 20:49That's five. But this is the 10th time here
- 20:51at the Oakmont. You know, going in, you know,
- 20:53you talked about Rory. His driver is a big time
- 20:56problem. He tried to switch golfer heads
- 21:01at Bay Hill. He was spraying the ball lights
- 21:03crazy. He brought back that old driver
- 21:05before it got tested. He did his thing at the Masters,
- 21:09he's talked about it going into the Canadian Open.
- 21:12He has no idea where his drivers going #1 #2 he's talked about it
- 21:18at his presser. This is out there, people listen
- 21:20to his presser. He does not want to grind
- 21:23anymore. That's the biggest thing in
- 21:25golf. He does not want to put in the
- 21:27hours. He doesn't want to go to the
- 21:28range and spend multiple hours at the range to work on his
- 21:31game. He's content on what he's doing,
- 21:33which is totally fine. Not knocking him, I'm not
- 21:37knocking him on that, but if you want to be at the all time,
- 21:39great. If you want to be at the same
- 21:41level as Scotty, you have to be out there wanting to compete and
- 21:45want to grind. And right now he doesn't want to
- 21:48do that. So Ken, if you want to, if you
- 21:50want to throw some money on Rory, that's absolutely fine.
- 21:52But right now? I.
- 21:55I feel like they're throwing it away kind of, but moving on.
- 21:58Couple of the guys on Liv, John ROM and I get it, it's Liv and
- 22:02I'm not a big Liv guy. We don't need to get into that,
- 22:04but he's made 21 top 10s in a row on Liv since he's been
- 22:07there. Hasn't won this year on Liv, but
- 22:09the high is consistent. We've watched them the last two
- 22:12majors. Jon ROM, we've talked about
- 22:14Dechambeau. Joaquin Neiman has won four
- 22:17times on Lib. Again, I don't really care about
- 22:19Lib, but when you're winning, you're winning.
- 22:21He's coming into the US Open. If his ball flight is is putting
- 22:25their time will tell. But again, we talked, I think
- 22:28Trent said this earlier, I love Colin doesn't hit the ball
- 22:32really typically the bomber, but he hits fairways and he's a
- 22:35pretty good putter. He could be a choice down the
- 22:37list, but the US Open, if you look at the scores, Ken kind of
- 22:41touched on this to start to show.
- 22:43It could be, I don't know, even par going into Sunday plus 1 -,
- 22:471 going into Sunday. So if someone who likes to watch
- 22:51golf and doesn't want to see a birdie fest, this is the course
- 22:54of you. You guys have a good day.
- 22:56Yeah, thank you. Jeff, I'm with you.
- 22:57I don't want to see the John Deere Classic.
- 22:59No, I don't want to see 22 on. Right.
- 23:01Don't you want to see 10 under? No, I don't and I think that
- 23:04we're going to be rewarded this week because I I I find it hard
- 23:08to believe that it's even going to get close to this.
- 23:10All right, coming up in the second hour of the program, I'm
- 23:12going to talk about a new betting market when it comes to
- 23:15the NFL and I love it. I've never heard of it before
- 23:19and circa is offering they're calling the protector of the
- 23:22year. They have come up with a list of
- 23:27offensive lineman. Have you heard of anything like
- 23:30this before? No.
- 23:32You can bet on who the now how? This is the debut of the NFL.
- 23:37The NFL has never awarded this. This will be the first.
- 23:39So this is a new trophy. This is a new.
- 23:42So the NFL is it's good, yes. And because it's a new trophy, a
- 23:47new award from the NFL, you're gonna be allowed to bet on it.
- 23:51So if you like you, you went to Iowa, you're a Hawkeye fan.
- 23:54You love watching Tristan, Tristan Wurfs Dominate or Linda
- 23:58Bomb or some of these dudes. Wurfs is 11 to one to be the
- 24:02protector of the year. Linderbaum is 40 to 1.
- 24:06I, I think this is a great idea. Why not give these guys in the
- 24:09trenches a little love? You can bet the Outland, right?
- 24:13Why not Protector of the year? Now that name kind of sucks.
- 24:16Now is it is protector? No, that's that's Proctor I'm.
- 24:21Thinking. Proctor, no Proctor and Gamble
- 24:23Proctor. I thought maybe Proctor had put
- 24:25a sponsorship on it. Don't give them ideas.
- 24:28Yeah. You know what, Trent?
- 24:30Excellent point. Work on the name.
- 24:31Yes, Yeah. Come up with something better.
- 24:33Protector of the year, even offensive lineman of the year is
- 24:37better than protector. Right.
- 24:39Because I, I would like to think that whoever wins this award is
- 24:42going to do some, you know, open up some holes in the run game.
- 24:44I've always dreamed of being protector of the Year.
- 24:47Yeah, play in the backyard. I switch positions.
- 24:51I will take a time out. Brent Bloom is going to join us
- 24:54from We Will next. What does this mean for We will,
- 24:57if anything, Bloom next. Miller and Condon underway into
- 25:00Tuesdays, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:08Hi, Mallory Congon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:11Trenton Ken with you until 2O clock just before AT2O clock the
- 25:15drive, Heather Lucas back on the drive today from 2:00 until 5.
- 25:20Brent Bloom is the executive director of the We Will
- 25:23Collective and he joins us to help us out with the house
- 25:26settlement. What this means, what this means
- 25:28for collectives going forward. His college athletics about to
- 25:32return to the wild. Wild West is the bag man, not
- 25:35the boogeyman, the bag man going to come out from hiding and be a
- 25:38part of this. And Brent joins us.
- 25:39Hello, Brent, Bloom, Trent and Ken, how are you?
- 25:43Good to talk to you guys. I'm great.
- 25:44It's the Sun is out here on a Tuesday.
- 25:46Yeah, you can't beat it. Still enjoy today because I
- 25:49guess it's going away. So I guess Brent, I know well,
- 25:52I'd like to stay in my lane and and I like to, you know, pine on
- 25:55games and, you know, speculate and those type of things.
- 25:59And this is way out of the over the tips of my skis.
- 26:01So I'll just ask you to you this, what concerns you in in
- 26:05your field, you know, heading up a collective, what concerns you
- 26:09about this house settlement? Yeah, I think more than anything
- 26:13in the short term is just the confusion in general for fans
- 26:16and donors. I mean, honestly, like it's it's
- 26:18hard enough for people in the industry and fans and owners
- 26:22like what do you want me to do? I'm like, honestly, it's like
- 26:24one day at a time here. So.
- 26:27So I think every at least the settlement passing on Friday is
- 26:31huge progress because it allows everyone to go forward with
- 26:35plans that they've been making now for nine months.
- 26:38That is with revenue sharing directly from the university.
- 26:41It at least gives everyone some clarity of it.
- 26:43And on July 1, universities can pay student athletes, which kind
- 26:48of it helps everybody understand all right now what happens to
- 26:51collectives and that's the next step.
- 26:53And you know, it's kind of play it by ear for now.
- 26:55I would say majority of collective guys will still
- 26:57exist. The We Will collective will
- 27:00exist at least through the end of the year as we kind of
- 27:02navigate all of these things. But most now will transition
- 27:06from straight up pay to play, direct fundraising to more of a
- 27:11marketing type agency where they're finding legit NIL deals
- 27:15for athletes at their institution.
- 27:17And that's going to be the new arms race.
- 27:19So we've gone from coaches contracts and facilities to
- 27:22straight up NIL to now it's going to be these collectives as
- 27:26marketing agencies to coordinate with local businesses, brands
- 27:29that will pass the muster test for this new clearing house.
- 27:32And that's the next wave of this arms race.
- 27:35Nil go. That is is what it's going to be
- 27:38deemed and this is what you're going to have to go through
- 27:40because you got Bar X. They want to have an Iowa State
- 27:45athlete that's going to be their spokesman and they're going to
- 27:47do 100 radio commercials and we're going to pay him for those
- 27:50100 radio commercials and to come in and record a 32nd spot,
- 27:53$2,000,000. And then Algo is going to say
- 27:56no, no, no, no, no. How concerning is that?
- 27:59How concerning when you see that.
- 28:00End. So they set the market.
- 28:02They set the market and just go down that path.
- 28:06Kind of explain what you know about nil.
- 28:08Go, yeah, yeah. So I'll try again.
- 28:11And this is I'm not an attorney at all and there's going to be a
- 28:13lawsuit. So this just takes us for as
- 28:15just a simple guy here in Des Moines.
- 28:18But in essence, this clearing house will be able to determine
- 28:22if it's a legit NIL deal with business purpose or not.
- 28:26And so all of these schools guys in the last couple of months had
- 28:29to submit a list of essentially any transaction that that
- 28:33they've made in NIL through their collective or their
- 28:36university over the last three years.
- 28:39And they have to report, is that a business?
- 28:41Is it an associated entity or not?
- 28:44Meaning if you're Gatorade or you're Nike, most likely that
- 28:48will still be allowed over the top of the salary cap because
- 28:51they couldn't technically give it to anybody.
- 28:54But for an Iowa State example, you know, Snook up Manufacturing
- 28:58would be considered an associated entity of Iowa State
- 29:00due to their close connection to Iowa State.
- 29:03So an NIL deal from Snook up Manufacturing, manufacturing get
- 29:05a lot heavier scrutiny than one from say, you know, Gatorade
- 29:10because of the close connection. And who are they actually giving
- 29:13NIL dollars to? And so the clearing house will
- 29:16essentially be the thumbs up or thumbs down.
- 29:18And that doesn't mean the athletes can't take the money.
- 29:21They can still take the money if they want to.
- 29:23But the second part of this is now there's going to be
- 29:26heavy-handed penalties from this Commission that the schools have
- 29:30to accept, which could mean loss of eligibility for the athlete
- 29:33or even worse, guys fight huge financial penalties for the
- 29:37institution and potentially being kicked out of the
- 29:40conference if they go too far over the cap.
- 29:43And so again, the mechanism for enforcement isn't necessarily on
- 29:45the individual player as far as they can't take the money.
- 29:48It's if you take the money and it's considered, you know, an
- 29:51associate entity, AKA a booster, a collective payment, your
- 29:55school is in hot water really quickly.
- 29:57And that's the document that they want all signed by these
- 29:59powerful institutions to make sure that they realize if we go
- 30:03over this and it's with a booster or collective, then we
- 30:06could get real serious hot water as a university, not as a
- 30:10player. Will they all the power force
- 30:13schools sign that document, You think Brett?
- 30:15I think so. I mean there, that's the
- 30:18thought. I mean all the SEC says they
- 30:20will. But again guys, we'll see.
- 30:22We'll see. I mean, I think that's the next
- 30:23step to follow is will those schools that have an advantage
- 30:27in this space are willing to give up that advantage.
- 30:30And for Iowa State, like you better hope they sign it because
- 30:35we can't keep up right now. And I know Jamie Pollard has
- 30:38gotten some heat with, you know, early some feedback on what he
- 30:40said, but he's absolutely true. Like I was in the same boat, by
- 30:43the way. I mean, I and I would think
- 30:45cannot compete in this world as it is going to continue over the
- 30:48next 10 years unless there's some sort of guardrails in
- 30:51place. And so we're all hoping that
- 30:53they will sign. It sounds like they will, but
- 30:55then the next question is when there is a challenge to this
- 30:58Commission and somebody nil deal get denied, will the school
- 31:04challenge it or they, you know, be the good, good community
- 31:07members and abide by the rule? It's fascinating.
- 31:09I mean, I saw a report yesterday, Texas Tech is about
- 31:11spend $50 million on their athletic programs, you know?
- 31:16And hopefully and can see most of that and this is where it
- 31:18gets a little bit confusing is the 2020 of that million is
- 31:21coming from the school itself. What Texas Tech did and what
- 31:24everybody did here and that's why the market got insane in the
- 31:27spring is they front loaded all those contracts for the through
- 31:30the collective. But after July one that can't
- 31:33happen. They can't any of those deals
- 31:35have to be legit nil going forward.
- 31:37And so Tech spent $35 million from its collective in the last
- 31:41couple of months to front load those contracts.
- 31:44I saw a report NIL go talking to ACC commissioners and
- 31:47administrators. More than 70% of current NIL
- 31:50deals would not be happening. They would be denied through
- 31:54this new clearing house. So what do you hear it in those
- 31:57terms? That's ACC too.
- 31:59I mean, they're swimming kind of in the same waters as you guys
- 32:01in the Big 12. Do you look at it as concerning
- 32:03or because you know, the financials of Iowa State, you
- 32:06talked about this is going to maybe bring people back to the
- 32:09field. Is this ultimately going to be a
- 32:11good thing for Iowa State? Recap absolutely.
- 32:14I mean there are any any regulation is good for Iowa
- 32:17State and honestly, like I'm going to throw Iowa in the mix
- 32:19too. I know they're, they're getting,
- 32:21you know, 30 more million in TV money, but they, they can't keep
- 32:24up either. I mean, and that's The thing is
- 32:26this will, this will keep literally 90% of schools
- 32:30involved because if it was a runaway train, like it was going
- 32:32down, it would be like an 8 team Invitational every single year
- 32:37with the, with the schools that can afford it.
- 32:39And so this is great news. This is a great first step.
- 32:41And I know people are going to be critical of, oh, you know,
- 32:44that's not really, you know, free market at work.
- 32:47This is just a step here. There's still a lot of issues
- 32:50that need to be handled. There will be lawsuits, but
- 32:53ultimately, the government's going to have to get involved
- 32:56just like it does and has with the NFL, Major League Baseball
- 33:00in the NBA, to get an antitrust exemption.
- 33:02And so codifying that in the law will be the next step for called
- 33:06sports to avoid all these lawsuits going forward.
- 33:08And so over the next 6 to 9 months, that's why you'll see a
- 33:11lot of college sports leaders working with the government.
- 33:15And it's also why Greg Stankey and the Notre Dame AD were
- 33:18golfing with President Trump on Sunday.
- 33:21Interesting. I want to ask you this because I
- 33:24get asked and I don't know the answer.
- 33:26So will the will the schools send 1090 nines to the athletes
- 33:30and in the past did we will have to 1099 some of the athletes did
- 33:35yeah, OK. Yep, that's, that's exactly it.
- 33:37And so you know, they'll have their own essentially third
- 33:39party funding mechanism. I think the Big 12, it'll be
- 33:42announced at some point is actually getting a corporate
- 33:45deal with PayPal. So Iowa State and all the other
- 33:48big club schools will run their payments through PayPal.
- 33:51And but yeah, though these athletes are taxed just like
- 33:53anybody else would be a contract employee.
- 33:55And that's been part of us for the last three years.
- 33:57All these, all these athletes have been paying federal and
- 34:00state tax just like the rest of us.
- 34:02So another component to this, and I heard Sankey talk a little
- 34:05bit about it is enforcement's coming.
- 34:09This new enforcement arm that is not going to be considered NCAA.
- 34:12It's going to be a separate entity, also potentially is
- 34:14going to have subpoena power, which will go a long way into
- 34:17keeping it talking to the people that you know inside this
- 34:21industry. Brent, is this something that's
- 34:22going to work? And when we do get the first
- 34:24Malfi? And so we know it'll happen very
- 34:26quickly and it'll happen right away by somebody.
- 34:30My believe they're going to come down hard right away.
- 34:32If, if this is if we're resetting everything in college
- 34:35athletics, the first one that screws up, the first one that
- 34:38cheats, you got to go after them hard.
- 34:40No doubt, Yeah. I've had great conversations
- 34:42with people in the administrations.
- 34:44It's like they, I don't want to call it the SW death penalty,
- 34:47but it's got to be really heavy-handed.
- 34:49It can't be like, oh, well, that's, you know, that's a
- 34:51couple losses of practice hours or something.
- 34:54No, they're going to get after them.
- 34:55They really are. It's the only way to make this
- 34:57work because what happened in the previous setup is they had
- 35:01rules in place, guys in NIL and then basically Tennessee said
- 35:04we're not going to follow those, we're going to sue you through
- 35:06our attorney general. And they won, and the whole
- 35:09thing went to heck in a hand basket overnight.
- 35:11So, yeah, I mean, we'll see. You can have all the best
- 35:14practices in place, but if these schools don't follow through and
- 35:18want to, you know, be selfish and do it for their own player,
- 35:21then we'll see how long it holds up.
- 35:23But if they do stick together, I do think this does have more
- 35:27stickiness than I think the general public is aware of.
- 35:29Yeah, I hope so, because I don't want to see it.
- 35:31The bag man in the Wild West return if everybody's on the
- 35:34same playing field, I think that makes for a much, much better
- 35:37product. We'll we'll see where it goes.
- 35:39So in the in the here and now, Brent, when an Iowa State fan or
- 35:43booster or you know, somebody wants to has has supported we
- 35:48will in the past. Do they still go through?
- 35:51We will do they go through the do the Iowa State itself?
- 35:54What do you what do you encourage fans to do now if they
- 35:57want to, you know, get involved in, in funding, you know, to the
- 36:01level that they can college sports.
- 36:04Great question. And in the next, I'd say next
- 36:06couple of months, still do what you've been doing with the Weber
- 36:08Collective. And so we still need, we still
- 36:12obligations that we're meeting with contracts we're currently
- 36:14paying out. So that's up to #1 priority for
- 36:17me. But just like Iowa announced
- 36:19yesterday with their new NIL fund, Iowa State is going to
- 36:22announce something similar here in the coming week.
- 36:24And so essentially, you know, post July 1, I would say fans
- 36:28will have the option to donate directly to a fund within Iowa
- 36:32State that will be called the We Will Fund.
- 36:35And so the nice part here is I would say it's kind of keeping
- 36:37all of our language. And so from the outside looking
- 36:40in, donors won't notice a whole lot of different.
- 36:42It's just a bank account. Might switch around and they'll
- 36:45go directly to Iowa State post July 1.
- 36:47And still encourage Cyclone fans to drink Ames Lager.
- 36:51Yeah. And it's all the same.
- 36:52Yeah, none of those things I've got a lot of questions about
- 36:54that. None of that's really going to
- 36:55change. It's just again on the on the
- 36:57back end kind of the the bank account is is what might, might
- 37:00change a little bit, but it all still directly benefits Iowa
- 37:03State and student athlete to keep Iowa State competitive and
- 37:06and all those things are not going to change And I'm still
- 37:09going to be around as well. Guys found out last week that
- 37:11I'll have a position within this umbrella of whatever Iowa State
- 37:15NIL operation looks like and all these things for Iowa State will
- 37:18be announced here in the coming weeks.
- 37:19But rest assured there's a plan and we still need everyone's
- 37:22support. And again, when you're dealing
- 37:24with the monsters like Texas Tech and you know, Iowa State
- 37:27had an awesome couple of years in this NIL era, you can't get
- 37:30comfortable because everyone else is trying to to find the
- 37:33best way to move forward and, and our in state schools need to
- 37:35do the same thing. Yep, those Red Raiders, they got
- 37:38to see me in the supply of money.
- 37:40Hey, Brett, thanks for jumping on with us.
- 37:41Appreciate it as always your insights and valuable during
- 37:45these times. Thank you, Brent Bloom, glad
- 37:47you're going to still be a part of it.
- 37:48We'll talk to you down the road, buddy.
- 37:50I appreciate you guys reach out in time.
- 37:51Yep. Good to hear from you, Brett
- 37:52Bloom, Executive Director of We will.
- 37:55I learned some things absolutely.
- 37:57And I think your point from the beginning of the show spot on.
- 38:00And I and I hope it is I, I hope that there's little.
- 38:03Teeth to this. Oh yes, there has to be.
- 38:05There has to be, yeah. Because we see with Texas Tech,
- 38:08you know, they have an extra $30 million.
- 38:10They're in the same conference. And they spent it in advance of
- 38:14their grandfathered inn. And but that ends July 1.
- 38:19That's over. That's over and no more.
- 38:21Well, potentially giving a billion dollars to a softball
- 38:24pitcher. Yeah, she's good, though.
- 38:25She is good and good for. Her.
- 38:27Yeah, absolutely. I'll come back, finish up our #1
- 38:30Miller and Condon, we're on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:39Miller and Condon welcome back. Final couple of minutes here.
- 38:41First hour of the program, Game three.
- 38:43NBA final tomorrow. Oklahoma City, 5 point favorite
- 38:48currently. If there's a 5 1/2 DraftKings
- 38:50and Caesar's now 5 1/2 Halliburton's limp.
- 38:54What do you make of it? I don't think anything should I.
- 38:59Like it was noticeable walking off The Walking off the podium
- 39:02after his press conference on Sunday night.
- 39:05I mean, it's the end of the year you.
- 39:06Know everybody's banged up. You would think he's played 100
- 39:09games of basketball. I didn't take anything away from
- 39:12it. I didn't see any reason for
- 39:15concern 10 or physical. Dude, you're going to be banged
- 39:17up. You know you're already banged
- 39:19up, and then you got to face this Behema.
- 39:21That's just the reality of the way it's going to be going for
- 39:23him the rest of the way. More likely to see a game six,
- 39:27NHL or NBA. Oh, NHL.
- 39:29For sure. And I think so too.
- 39:30Yeah, it's hockey. I don't think the NBA is going
- 39:32to see a Game 6, do you? I really don't.
- 39:35I hate to say it kind of reminds me of Sixers Lakers.
- 39:39Can the Pacers? Iverson got game one.
- 39:42Have that 1820223 points shooting night or they knock
- 39:46down a ton. Win one at home, get us to a
- 39:48game. I gotta hope so.
- 39:50Is that the only path though of even getting another victory?
- 39:54The way they guard you and there's just so many of them,
- 39:57yes, it it seems like there's six guys on the floor.
- 39:59Who just wave after wave? Oh my God, Hour 2, we're going
- 40:03to do a little NFL Start Day syndicate on the Packers.
- 40:05What does Gyre Alexander mean? Then we're going to get into
- 40:08some other things. A quarterback he used to root
- 40:10for is now a Steeler. We really never talked about
- 40:13that. Didn't move the markets.
- 40:14One bet. Betting markets with the news.
- 40:16Aaron Rodgers as a Steeler. Hour 2 coming up next Iowa
- 40:19Sports Radio Network.
