- 0:07Speaker 1: This Mead podcast. This episode is brought to you by
- 0:12Speaker 1: Sea Foam Motor Treatment, a proud podcast sponsor of Meat Eater.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:20Speaker 1: conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer Newhart, and today
- 0:24Speaker 1: we're joined by Brodie Henderson, Danielle Pruett, Mark Kenyon, Tony Peterson,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Clay Newcome, Casey Smith, Jason Phelps, and Brent and Reeves. Now, Brent,
- 0:32Speaker 1: this is your first time playing Meat Eater Trivia. How
- 0:35Speaker 1: do you feel about your chances? I'm gonna win, okay,
- 0:38Speaker 1: based on what When I was in Little League, I
- 0:41Speaker 1: never went to the plate. I did not expect to
- 0:44Speaker 1: hit a home run. And how did that work out
- 0:46Speaker 1: for you? I'll played little league for four years. I
- 0:48Speaker 1: hit one, okay, and now you're here playing trivia instead
- 0:51Speaker 1: of in the majors or something, right, correct, That's the
- 0:53Speaker 1: reason I'm here Now. I know you listen to some episodes.
- 0:56Speaker 1: How do you normally do? What would be like the
- 0:58Speaker 1: low end of how you perform in the high end,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm usually right around the Shelby Index. Okay. The highest
- 1:03Speaker 1: I ever got was seven and it was tied for
- 1:05Speaker 1: whoever one. I think it was Brody won that. Wow, Clay,
- 1:08Speaker 1: does that check out? You know Brent better than anybody here.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Brent is gonna be uh, he's gonna be real good
- 1:14Speaker 1: at some stuff. But he's got to give me an example.
- 1:16Speaker 1: He's got some holes. Give me an example. Man, that's
- 1:20Speaker 1: a good one. First, I want to ask you, Clay,
- 1:22Speaker 1: do you know what what the hole would be in
- 1:23Speaker 1: your competition? Because I've seen the stats and I know
- 1:26Speaker 1: where you severely underperform. Really, I'm very interested in that.
- 1:30Speaker 1: What do you think I couldn't tell you. I couldn't
- 1:32Speaker 1: tell you my hole cooking. Cooking is right, I'd have
- 1:37Speaker 1: to revisit the stats. But one time I checked um
- 1:40Speaker 1: and your batting average was below ten percent. And cooking,
- 1:45Speaker 1: I don't see the fishing pull much, Clay. No fishing fishing,
- 1:49Speaker 1: I'm weak. My wife will never forget him because he
- 1:52Speaker 1: put mushrooms in chili and on my Instagram post one time.
- 2:00Speaker 1: This whole Danielle mushroom, I was making a joke, is
- 2:05Speaker 1: better than beans Texas. Now, Brent, though, back to Brent,
- 2:10Speaker 1: what would be like a hole in his game that
- 2:11Speaker 1: you were referring to. Brent is going to I would
- 2:14Speaker 1: say cooking probably would be a hole. But there's a
- 2:19Speaker 1: whole lot of stuff. He's a he's a generalist, Okay,
- 2:21Speaker 1: so he's going to do pretty good. That works well
- 2:23Speaker 1: in this game. Now this is a ten round quiz
- 2:25Speaker 1: show with questions from media. What do you got? How
- 2:28Speaker 1: old are you? Fifty seven? Okay? In your trivia prime?
- 2:36Speaker 1: What's this theory? The older you are, the better you do.
- 2:39Speaker 1: But then there's a point at which you just started.
- 2:43Speaker 1: That's probably we've we've been figuring out where the bell
- 2:48Speaker 1: curve is. Lately it seems to be what do you think,
- 2:50Speaker 1: Brodie in the forties? Wait a minute, like you start
- 2:54Speaker 1: like dropping on like the peak of the bell curve
- 2:57Speaker 1: would be where you think, Yeah, I don't know. Forty
- 3:00Speaker 1: to sixty tat I tell you who's gonna sneak up
- 3:05Speaker 1: on us? As casey, this guy's, this guy's he doesn't
- 3:08Speaker 1: have many holes. I'll surprise you. I thought that last time,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and then it did not do very good. So I'm
- 3:13Speaker 1: just gonna stay over here and stay quiet towards the
- 3:16Speaker 1: second half, and good everybody, you'll feel my pressure. Come on.
- 3:19Speaker 1: But his partner Tyler sneakily won the game that he
- 3:23Speaker 1: was on. Okay, came up here from Texas in the
- 3:27Speaker 1: snow and cold and defeated the room. Tyler will do
- 3:30Speaker 1: that to you. This is a ten round quiz show
- 3:33Speaker 1: with questions from meat eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and cooking, and there is a prize. Meat eater will
- 3:40Speaker 1: donate five hundred dollars to the conservation organization of the
- 3:43Speaker 1: winners choosing and each week here on Trivia we reveal
- 3:46Speaker 1: a new stat for the Stat of the Week. This week,
- 3:49Speaker 1: we're looking at player performance for the first question of
- 3:53Speaker 1: each game. On average, players have a forty eight percent
- 3:57Speaker 1: success rate on multiple choice questions and average they have
- 4:00Speaker 1: a thirty seven percent success rate for the other nine questions.
- 4:04Speaker 1: So that's an eleven percent increase for the first question
- 4:07Speaker 1: of the game. And Brodie wanted to know how important
- 4:10Speaker 1: it is for players to get the first question right. Well,
- 4:13Speaker 1: in seventy three percent of games the winner has gotten
- 4:16Speaker 1: the first question right. On the contrary, only twenty seven
- 4:20Speaker 1: percent of the time does someone win without getting the
- 4:23Speaker 1: first question just walk out of the room. So that
- 4:28Speaker 1: makes question one the best predictor for player success very
- 4:33Speaker 1: meaningful to get the multiple choice question right. If not
- 4:36Speaker 1: behind the eight ball? Do you do you pick the
- 4:39Speaker 1: first question intentionally for one that you feel like people
- 4:42Speaker 1: are gonna get or is it gonna be a hard one?
- 4:43Speaker 1: The first question is the only multiple choice question that
- 4:47Speaker 1: we have, so that's why number one is always different
- 4:50Speaker 1: than the rest of the batch. It's always always multiple choice,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and we have some housekeeping it get you. In a
- 4:55Speaker 1: previous game of trivia, I asked what fish Santiago battled
- 4:59Speaker 1: with and the old Man in the sea before losing
- 5:02Speaker 1: it to sharks. I confused the room by saying the
- 5:05Speaker 1: family of fish would be good enough, which led to
- 5:08Speaker 1: a scenario where I accepted sailfish is an answer, but
- 5:11Speaker 1: not billfish. Listening back to that episode, I realized my
- 5:14Speaker 1: stance was lacking common sense. Although Hemingway never explicitly says
- 5:19Speaker 1: what type of marlin it was, it was clearly a
- 5:21Speaker 1: blue marlin based on size and location. When I wrote
- 5:24Speaker 1: that question and said I'd accept the fish family, I
- 5:27Speaker 1: was trying to be proactive about not creating uncertainty, but
- 5:31Speaker 1: instead I did the opposite. So I'm going back in
- 5:34Speaker 1: time and letting level headedness prevail by accepting Brodie's answer
- 5:38Speaker 1: of billfish slash blue Marlin, but not accepting the answer
- 5:42Speaker 1: of sailfish. This doesn't change the outcome of the game.
- 5:45Speaker 1: It just gives Brody an even more authoritative victory. Correct
- 5:52Speaker 1: that would have changed the outcome of the game. Instead
- 5:56Speaker 1: of winning with eight points, he won with nine. Listening
- 5:59Speaker 1: back Brodie, I was like, Yeah, that just didn't make
- 6:01Speaker 1: sense what I did. I came in overprepared. I worked
- 6:05Speaker 1: myself into a pretzel and that was the outcome. That's
- 6:09Speaker 1: why you're leading. Thank you, Brodie, Thank you Clay, pulling
- 6:13Speaker 1: for you too today. Let's go now the Shelby index
- 6:17Speaker 1: fort Today's game is a three, so our winner should
- 6:19Speaker 1: get six correct answers, and with that we're onto the
- 6:22Speaker 1: game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil, Look, I need
- 6:27Speaker 1: to know what I stand to win everything? How's that?
- 6:32Speaker 1: Just tend to win everything? Game on Suckers. Question one,
- 6:43Speaker 1: As always Clay, this will be multiple choice. The topic
- 6:47Speaker 1: is biology according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Which of these jobs has the highest average salary? Is
- 6:58Speaker 1: it wildlife biologist, forrester, archaeologist, or veterinarian. According to the
- 7:07Speaker 1: US Bureau of Labor statistics, Which of these jobs has
- 7:10Speaker 1: the highest average salary? Four choices or wildlife biologist forrester,
- 7:16Speaker 1: archaeologist or vet. Quick answer from Danielle, Danielle, you know
- 7:23Speaker 1: this one. Oh yeah, I've had to take my dog,
- 7:26Speaker 1: don't Spencer now. I haven't seen anybody change their answer,
- 7:43Speaker 1: Danielle to take my dog to the I have some
- 7:48Speaker 1: concerns about the lack of specificity and one of these
- 7:52Speaker 1: career again is according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics,
- 7:57Speaker 1: does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 8:02Speaker 1: We have Danielle saying forrester. Now she says VET, Tony
- 8:07Speaker 1: saying VET, Brent saying VET, Casey saying VET. Everybody said vet,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and they got it right. The correct answer is veterinarians.
- 8:16Speaker 1: The average salary for an archaeologist is sixty seven thousand dollars,
- 8:22Speaker 1: for a forester is sixty eight thousand, for a wildlife
- 8:25Speaker 1: biologist is seventy thousand, and for a veterinarian is one
- 8:28Speaker 1: hundred ten thousand. Veterinarian is also the most prolific career
- 8:32Speaker 1: from that list. In America, there are twice as many
- 8:35Speaker 1: vets as there are wildlife biologists, archaeologists, and forresters combined.
- 8:40Speaker 1: We're going to get so many people writing in saying
- 8:44Speaker 1: that's completely Those numbers are way off. They can take
- 8:47Speaker 1: it up with the US like some kids like sixty
- 8:50Speaker 1: eight thousand for a wild by biologist no Way. Question
- 8:54Speaker 1: to the topic is cooking. This is our listener question
- 8:57Speaker 1: of the Week, which was won by Walker Wallace for
- 9:00Speaker 1: sending this great question. Walker is going to get a
- 9:02Speaker 1: book signed by Steve. A steak that's cooked to this
- 9:06Speaker 1: city style is referred to as being black and blue.
- 9:13Speaker 1: A steak that's cooked to this city's style is referred
- 9:17Speaker 1: to as being black and blue. Danielle is the only
- 9:20Speaker 1: one who's come up with an answer. She has an
- 9:22Speaker 1: unfair advantage. Was that Jason, I don't know she cooks
- 9:28Speaker 1: more than I do. Tell you right now, No, it
- 9:31Speaker 1: makes you feel better. I miss both cooking questions last
- 9:35Speaker 1: last series. Gain. A steak that's cooked to this city's
- 9:40Speaker 1: style is referred to as being black and blue. We're
- 9:44Speaker 1: looking for a city city that's right, Danielle, Do you
- 9:48Speaker 1: have this one right? Danielle doesn't know. I know it,
- 10:00Speaker 1: but there's I have a hint of doubt. Okay's I
- 10:03Speaker 1: have a really bad memory. Okay. Mark and Jason sharing
- 10:08Speaker 1: answers down. What do you guys think of each other's answers? Jason,
- 10:13Speaker 1: what do you think? You think he's right? His is
- 10:16Speaker 1: a good Mark? What do you think of Jason's answer? Okay,
- 10:20Speaker 1: but they're different? Yea, I have no idea. Does everybody
- 10:28Speaker 1: have an answer? No, I don't know. I didn't know
- 10:31Speaker 1: city's head stakes. That's how bad it is. Go ahead
- 10:34Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Danielle saying Pittsburgh, Tony
- 10:40Speaker 1: saying New Orleans, saying Kansas City, Casey saying case Mark
- 10:46Speaker 1: saying New Orleans, Jason saying Saint Louis, Clay saying Kansas City,
- 10:51Speaker 1: Brodie saying New York. We have a correct answer in
- 10:54Speaker 1: the room. It's Pittsburgh. God, Pittsburgh steak is one that's
- 11:00Speaker 1: been seared at a very high temperature so that it's
- 11:03Speaker 1: charred on the outside and rare on the inside. Some
- 11:06Speaker 1: say the history of this steak dates back to the
- 11:08Speaker 1: Great Depression, when steel mill workers cooked cuts of beef
- 11:12Speaker 1: on blast furnaces that were over two thousand degrees. If
- 11:15Speaker 1: you want some tips on how to make a great steak.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Then go to the media dot com and read Daniel
- 11:20Speaker 1: Pruett's article called how to perfectly cook I thought you
- 11:24Speaker 1: were gonna say, go to Daniel's article on meta dot
- 11:26Speaker 1: com for how to cook Pittsburgh's question three. The topic
- 11:31Speaker 1: is public lands. Name four of the seven states that
- 11:36Speaker 1: the organ National Historic Trail passes through. Name name four
- 11:44Speaker 1: of the seven states that the Organ National Historic Trail
- 11:49Speaker 1: passes through. Looks like some folks are doodling on their boards,
- 11:54Speaker 1: maybe drawing where that trail goes. See if they can
- 11:58Speaker 1: find the seven states. Tony with the quickest answer, Tony,
- 12:03Speaker 1: how you think you're doing can do on this one?
- 12:06Speaker 1: Not very well, but I might have got it. Okay,
- 12:09Speaker 1: need four four answers, give me five and you're wrong?
- 12:12Speaker 1: Do you not write five answers? Mark? Okay, I got
- 12:16Speaker 1: this one all right. Why why do you feel so
- 12:19Speaker 1: confident because I'm into the Organ trail. It's interesting. Good again?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Need four of the seven states that the Organ National
- 12:29Speaker 1: Historic Trail passes through. If we ever do a book club,
- 12:33Speaker 1: there's a super fun Organ Trail book. Which one did
- 12:36Speaker 1: you read? The one by A rinker Buck, same one,
- 12:40Speaker 1: that's the one I read. Yeah, it's a good like
- 12:42Speaker 1: pop approach to it. You know. I liked it. I
- 12:45Speaker 1: didn't love it um and I actually recommended it to
- 12:48Speaker 1: Clay at one point because there's so much darn mule talking.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Half the book is about mules. Because the guy actually
- 12:55Speaker 1: got mules and rode with a mule and cart across
- 12:58Speaker 1: as close as he could. Follow the trail while examining
- 13:01Speaker 1: the history of the whole thing is interesting. Again, I
- 13:03Speaker 1: liked it. I did have some regret afterwards that I
- 13:05Speaker 1: didn't pick a different Organ trail book, because I think
- 13:08Speaker 1: there are may be better ones out there, and I
- 13:10Speaker 1: was looking for more of the historical perspective rather than someone,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you know, just going down Highway eighty one or whatever road. Yeah,
- 13:16Speaker 1: this is like an experiential one. Sure does everybody have
- 13:19Speaker 1: an answer written down? I got four? Brodie, go ahead
- 13:26Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Danielle Saying, Organ, Idaho, Washington, Utah,
- 13:33Speaker 1: Tony Sang Organ, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Brent Saying Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Organ,
- 13:41Speaker 1: Casey Sang Oregon, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, Mark Sang Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, Wyoming,
- 13:48Speaker 1: Jason Sang Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, Clay sang Organ Nebraska, Missouri, Wyoming,
- 13:55Speaker 1: Brodie Saying Wyoming, Idaho, Organ, Utah. The seven states are Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon,
- 14:07Speaker 1: and Washington Boom, South Dakota, HOSM. The room did, Okay,
- 14:14Speaker 1: how many folks got that one right? Three people got
- 14:17Speaker 1: it right. The rest of you were very close. Again.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Seven states Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon. I got
- 14:24Speaker 1: really nervous after I wrote Missouri. The Oregon Trail, which
- 14:28Speaker 1: starts in Independence, Missouri and ends in Oregon City, Oregon,
- 14:32Speaker 1: was deemed a National Trail by the Congress in nineteen
- 14:36Speaker 1: seventy eight. The National Trails Office is part of the
- 14:39Speaker 1: National Park Service. Their mission is to protect and promote
- 14:42Speaker 1: routes with historical and cultural significance. Now, some of you
- 14:46Speaker 1: who gave incorrect answers may have given an answer, were
- 14:49Speaker 1: part of the Oregon Trail passed through like, because of
- 14:52Speaker 1: course it had little splits and stuff like that. But
- 14:55Speaker 1: I was referring specifically to the trail that is part
- 14:58Speaker 1: of the National Park Service. Yeah, i'd probably been if
- 15:01Speaker 1: y'all just do a little more research if you would
- 15:04Speaker 1: have played the game more when when you're a kid,
- 15:06Speaker 1: you know the question for the topic is fishing. This
- 15:09Speaker 1: next great question comes to is via Sam Johnstone. If
- 15:12Speaker 1: you have a question you think is right from meat
- 15:13Speaker 1: Eator trivia, you can send it to trivia to meat
- 15:16Speaker 1: eater dot com. What popular fishing luard color gets its
- 15:20Speaker 1: name from a French liqueur? Yeah? What popular fishing luard
- 15:28Speaker 1: color gets its name from a French liqueur? Quick answers
- 15:32Speaker 1: from the entire room. Everybody may get this one right.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Um,
- 15:44Speaker 1: everybody says chartruse, And everybody got it right. It was
- 15:46Speaker 1: too he said, char trust. I never said I was
- 15:53Speaker 1: a good speller. The color Chartruse is named after a
- 15:57Speaker 1: greenish yellowish French liqueur named are Truce that was invented
- 16:01Speaker 1: in seventeen thirty seven. It is composed of distilled alcohol
- 16:05Speaker 1: aged with one hundred and thirty different herbs. The flavor
- 16:08Speaker 1: has been described as very sweet with a spicy and
- 16:12Speaker 1: pungent aftertaste. Yep, he's not the famous quote tell it
- 16:18Speaker 1: to us, Brodie. If it ain't our truce, it ain't
- 16:21Speaker 1: no use. Question five. The topic is conservation. The actor
- 16:28Speaker 1: Iron Eyes Cody was better known by this nickname for
- 16:31Speaker 1: his tear jerking performance in a nineteen seventy one Keep
- 16:35Speaker 1: America Beautiful commercial. Casey with a quick answer, here's the
- 16:41Speaker 1: question again. The actor Iron Eyes Cody was better known
- 16:45Speaker 1: by this nickname for his tear jerking performance in a
- 16:49Speaker 1: nineteen seventy one Keep America Beautiful commercial. Like I r
- 16:56Speaker 1: O n. Iron Eyes Cody? Looking for his nickname Golly,
- 17:06Speaker 1: which is more famous? I know the commercial realm okay,
- 17:10Speaker 1: but I can't think of the name. Casey, do you
- 17:12Speaker 1: know this one? Well? Potentially, but there might be a
- 17:17Speaker 1: different I mean, this is beyond my years, but reaching
- 17:20Speaker 1: back into something who was alive in nineteen seventy one?
- 17:23Speaker 1: In here? Right? Okay? It does sounds familiar. Absolutely no commercial, Oky,
- 17:29Speaker 1: So you have the answer. I have a answer. I
- 17:32Speaker 1: knew his name was Ironized Cody. What was his name?
- 17:37Speaker 1: Clay is trying to pull more information out of you
- 17:39Speaker 1: brand looking to my again. The actor Iron Eyed Cody
- 17:44Speaker 1: was better known by this nickname for his tear jerking
- 17:48Speaker 1: performance in a nineteen seventy one Keep America Beautiful commercial.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I don't think he was a Native American. Either you're
- 17:57Speaker 1: handing out hints here, we're real Tony, you're gonna get
- 18:05Speaker 1: this one, absolutely not Cole. Does everyone have an answer?
- 18:09Speaker 1: Who's going to come up with an answer? I'm changing
- 18:13Speaker 1: my answer? WHOA Oh wow? I just got the answer
- 18:17Speaker 1: from Brent's eyes and we're changing it. Has this a
- 18:19Speaker 1: nickname withstood the test of times? Brody, you're helping out
- 18:23Speaker 1: the room here again. Does everybody have an answer? Go
- 18:27Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Danielle saying iron eyes,
- 18:34Speaker 1: Tony saying blue eyes, Cody, Brent saying what does that say? That?
- 18:40Speaker 1: Ain't it? Casey sang the crying Indian, Mark saying the
- 18:44Speaker 1: crying Brave, Jason saying Captain Planet Clay saying Tanto. Brody saying,
- 18:49Speaker 1: sad Indian. The correct answer is the crying Indian? Right,
- 18:55Speaker 1: got it right? A few of you flirted with the
- 18:57Speaker 1: answer but didn't quite get there. Good tribe, Brody. The
- 19:01Speaker 1: environmental commercial first aired on Thurthday. It demanded Cody in
- 19:06Speaker 1: a Native American costume and shedding a tear after a
- 19:09Speaker 1: vehicle drives by him and throws trash out the window.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Cody was one of Hollywood's go to actors for Native
- 19:15Speaker 1: American roles, but it was later revealed that he was
- 19:18Speaker 1: of Italian descent. Brenton, you were right on that front,
- 19:22Speaker 1: but couldn't come up with the right He didn't have
- 19:24Speaker 1: it right the first time, did you? No? No? No?
- 19:27Speaker 1: I wrote why titled? Because that was a trivia question
- 19:30Speaker 1: to a football game. One time I just said why title?
- 19:34Speaker 1: And it was right, and my brother thought they'd you
- 19:37Speaker 1: the smartest guy ever. Oh, this actually happened to you. Yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 1: you just guessed. I just guessed. So I've always figured.
- 19:46Speaker 1: We are halfway through the game of trivia. Give us
- 19:49Speaker 1: a scoreboard update. Yeah, so everyone's doing pretty well. We've
- 19:54Speaker 1: got Brent, Brody, Jason, and Tony all with two points apiece, Clay,
- 20:00Speaker 1: Danielle and Mark have three points, and in first place
- 20:03Speaker 1: is Casey with four points. Everyone's doing well. Phil. Hey,
- 20:12Speaker 1: one time my family was playing, like a big family
- 20:15Speaker 1: group was playing a game, the game where you have
- 20:18Speaker 1: a you're trying to describe an action, or you're trying
- 20:21Speaker 1: to describe something with with words, but you can't say
- 20:24Speaker 1: a certain group of words, so you go it this.
- 20:28Speaker 1: It's not shreds, it's tab yeah, yeah. And my person
- 20:32Speaker 1: got up to give their thing and like it's like
- 20:35Speaker 1: ready go, and I said Panda. They hadn't even said
- 20:40Speaker 1: a word yet, and they go, oh my gosh, and
- 20:43Speaker 1: it was Panda. Total guess. I mean for real, I
- 20:48Speaker 1: wasn't cheating. I just I just got it. I started
- 20:51Speaker 1: to just guess just by like looking in someone's eyes.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Some miraculous things happened in to them. We've had Steve
- 21:00Speaker 1: say that divine spirit has come to him and given
- 21:03Speaker 1: him the answer the one example it happened, though the
- 21:05Speaker 1: answer was wrong. Also, his humunculus helps him out a
- 21:10Speaker 1: tremendous amount. So this is the game for that sort
- 21:13Speaker 1: of thing. Right. Question six, the topic is hunting. This
- 21:27Speaker 1: next great question comes to is via Randy Bell. If
- 21:30Speaker 1: you have a question you think is right for Meat
- 21:32Speaker 1: Eator Trivia, you can send it to trivia at the
- 21:34Speaker 1: meat eater dot com. How many states have established populations
- 21:40Speaker 1: of halina? How many states have established populations of halina?
- 21:48Speaker 1: Question about the meaning of established. It means that they
- 21:54Speaker 1: have halina that live and breed there. It's not just
- 21:57Speaker 1: a random solo halina that wandered in that would not count.
- 22:01Speaker 1: It's like there's a Havolina that walked into Wisconsin right now,
- 22:05Speaker 1: Wisconsin is not one of the states. Um, that would
- 22:08Speaker 1: not be a state where there is an established population
- 22:13Speaker 1: understood US states here? US states again? How many states
- 22:16Speaker 1: have established populations of Havolina? Does Mexico call their territory states?
- 22:22Speaker 1: That's right, good question, Casey, just appreciate the United States.
- 22:27Speaker 1: When you're in this position, you need clarification. You go,
- 22:31Speaker 1: Tony with a quick answer. Tony, you got this one. Uh,
- 22:34Speaker 1: probably not. Okay, broad are doing a lot of hemming
- 22:36Speaker 1: and hawing over here. We're all hemming and hawing about
- 22:39Speaker 1: the same state. Who has hunted Havlina before? Nobody? Oh,
- 22:43Speaker 1: Casey has Okay, Casey, you have a little bit of
- 22:45Speaker 1: an advantage. I almost got. Well, it's argued by one.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I almost hunt. Listen, Mark Head an encounter with the
- 22:53Speaker 1: rat and does everybody have an answer holding the gold? Okay,
- 23:03Speaker 1: I want to hear the end of that story. Go
- 23:05Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Danielle saying three,
- 23:11Speaker 1: Tony saying three, Brent saying five, KC saying five, Mark
- 23:15Speaker 1: saying three, Jason sang four, Clay saying four, Brodie saying three.
- 23:22Speaker 1: The correct answer is three. No. Well, Halina populations aren't
- 23:28Speaker 1: well known, but estimates put herd sizes at about one
- 23:31Speaker 1: hundred thousand in Texas, forty five thousand in Arizona, and
- 23:35Speaker 1: five thousand in New Mexico. Hevelina populations were on a
- 23:38Speaker 1: nationwide decline for much of the twentieth century, but started
- 23:42Speaker 1: to rebound once states treated them like a game animal. Okay,
- 23:46Speaker 1: tell me why there aren't havlnas in southern California. Yeah,
- 23:49Speaker 1: so I looked this up and people I described it
- 23:52Speaker 1: as the Colorado River being a very very hard boundary
- 23:55Speaker 1: for them. So they're not in California yet. But have
- 23:59Speaker 1: Alina have been moving further north. They're now on the
- 24:02Speaker 1: rim of the Grand Canyon, which it seems like that
- 24:04Speaker 1: wasn't a place that they were maybe about fifty years ago.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Do you guys talked about armadillas recently? They're moving up
- 24:10Speaker 1: north too, showing up in weird places. I like it.
- 24:13Speaker 1: They are weird. Yeah, they're saying that someday they might
- 24:16Speaker 1: be in southern Indiana. Let's go Question seven. The topic
- 24:23Speaker 1: is woodsmanship. Mariam Webster defines this phenomenon as the reddish
- 24:29Speaker 1: light seen near sunset or sunrise on the summits of mountains.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Miriam Webster defines this phenomenon as the reddish light seen
- 24:42Speaker 1: near sunset or sunrise. Oh god, summits of mountains. I
- 24:46Speaker 1: don't think this is woodsmanship. No, listen, this is much
- 24:51Speaker 1: closer to the target category than a lot of spencer
- 24:54Speaker 1: some questions that I Clay. We once had a woodsmanship
- 24:57Speaker 1: question about what the most popular Girl Scout cookie is.
- 25:01Speaker 1: The tie there being that girl Scouts participate in many
- 25:05Speaker 1: things similar to the boy Scouts, thus woodsmanship. Again, the
- 25:09Speaker 1: question is Miriam Webster. He finds this phenomenon as the
- 25:13Speaker 1: reddish light seen near sunset or sunrise on the summits
- 25:17Speaker 1: of mountains. This is a little unfair. Do you folks
- 25:20Speaker 1: who don't live near mountains like Brody over here, Tony?
- 25:23Speaker 1: It seems like you knew this anyway, though, I'm getting
- 25:26Speaker 1: a little more confidence. I okay, I think I might
- 25:29Speaker 1: have it good again his question seven, Clay lives in
- 25:35Speaker 1: the mountains. I mean that's what he'd say. Come on, man,
- 25:40Speaker 1: I mean anything over two thousand feets a mountain right
- 25:43Speaker 1: with a thousand thousand foot of relief? Is that the definition.
- 25:46Speaker 1: That's what I've heard. Okay, you run out of excuses
- 25:50Speaker 1: to get this one right? Clay, Yeah, I don't know, man,
- 25:55Speaker 1: you will in a few seconds. You see you have
- 25:58Speaker 1: this one. I have an answer. I would say sixty
- 26:04Speaker 1: the first question I felt great about all day? Okay,
- 26:07Speaker 1: me too? Is everybody absolutely? Really? Am I gonna feel
- 26:11Speaker 1: dumb after you should? Is it better to not answer
- 26:15Speaker 1: if you don't think you're even close or just like
- 26:17Speaker 1: put a real bad I'm just trying to I mean,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I'm not trying to be cute and just have like
- 26:23Speaker 1: red light. Clay. I think you're running out of time though, Clay, Yeah,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I think I'm out. I just gotta tap. Does everybody
- 26:30Speaker 1: have an answer? What Panda? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 26:36Speaker 1: We have Danielle saying red Hayes, Tony sang elp and glow,
- 26:41Speaker 1: Brent saying why a tittle? Casey saying what does that say?
- 26:44Speaker 1: King fire Mark saying elp and glow? Jason sang twilight,
- 26:49Speaker 1: Clay saying Panda body sang elp and glow. The correct
- 26:53Speaker 1: answer is elp and glow. ELP and glow can happen
- 26:58Speaker 1: indirect or indirect sunlight. One version is where the sun
- 27:02Speaker 1: sets behind the horizon from an observer's point of view,
- 27:06Speaker 1: but is not yet set from the mountain's point of view.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Another version is where the sun has set from the
- 27:11Speaker 1: mountains point of view, but red light waves interacting with
- 27:14Speaker 1: moisture in the atmosphere continue to illuminate the mountain. People
- 27:18Speaker 1: give you so much grief on here, But I've learned
- 27:20Speaker 1: like one thing already, Thank you Brand, Tonight Brand. You
- 27:24Speaker 1: can step out of your hotel room, look up at
- 27:26Speaker 1: the bridgers and you will see alp and glow, probably
- 27:28Speaker 1: around like seven forty five or so, So take take
- 27:30Speaker 1: a look. It's especially it looks even better when there's
- 27:34Speaker 1: snow on the mountain, like there is right now. So
- 27:37Speaker 1: it's one word, alp and glow. One word. Yeah, there's
- 27:40Speaker 1: no way I was getting that. Question eight, The topic
- 27:44Speaker 1: is cooking. What type of fish is unagi? What type
- 27:52Speaker 1: of fish is unagie? I'll spell that for you. You
- 27:56Speaker 1: and Agi, Danielle and Brodie. I think they know it, Clay.
- 28:03Speaker 1: We're really showing people what's going on. Now. That was
- 28:07Speaker 1: a pretty cooking What type of fish is unagi? The
- 28:14Speaker 1: topic is cooking? If I have this Rod. It's the
- 28:17Speaker 1: most ironic Rod answer I've ever gotten. Okay, I'm pretty
- 28:21Speaker 1: excited about it. Clay just showed the whole room the
- 28:25Speaker 1: way You're lucky. People like you so much. Clay needs
- 28:34Speaker 1: help spelling perch here. Why let me see what you
- 28:38Speaker 1: wrote down? Now, Clay, what do you got going on there?
- 28:41Speaker 1: Does everybody have does everybody have an answer? Yes? Go
- 28:50Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answer. Clay's on his third version.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Now we have Danielle saying eel, Tony sang blowfish, Brenton
- 28:58Speaker 1: saying sushi, Ksey saying eel, Mark saying tuna, Jason saying eel. Clay,
- 29:03Speaker 1: he wrote down salmon, then he wrote down what'd you
- 29:05Speaker 1: write down? Freshwater? Now he wrote down trout body saying
- 29:10Speaker 1: the correct answer is eel. More specifically, it's a freshwater eel.
- 29:16Speaker 1: But if you just said eel, we will give it
- 29:18Speaker 1: to you. Yeah, I got it right. You want to
- 29:19Speaker 1: know why we were just joking about two thousands TV
- 29:22Speaker 1: trivia because the only one I would get right as friends,
- 29:25Speaker 1: And sure enough, there's a friends joke about Unagi where
- 29:29Speaker 1: Ross says it's like his awareness of the environment, and
- 29:32Speaker 1: they joked with like no No, I'm pretty sure that's sushi.
- 29:35Speaker 1: So you were the last person I would guess as
- 29:39Speaker 1: a friend's man boy, Mark, just wait to all the
- 29:42Speaker 1: surprises you hear. In twenty fourteen, American Unagi in Maine
- 29:49Speaker 1: became the country's first hatchery to raise glass eels. Prior
- 29:53Speaker 1: to that, almost every eel purchased in America was caught locally,
- 29:57Speaker 1: flowing internationally to be raised overseas, and then flown back
- 30:01Speaker 1: to be served. Did you get right, Tony Fel? We
- 30:05Speaker 1: have two questions left? Where does the leaderboard stand? It's
- 30:09Speaker 1: a great game. Um, Everyone still in the game, with
- 30:13Speaker 1: the exception of Brent Reeves. Jason and Clay have three
- 30:25Speaker 1: points apiece, Tony Peterson has four points, and we've got
- 30:30Speaker 1: a four way tie for first place. Mark, Casey, Danielle
- 30:33Speaker 1: and Brody all have five points. The corners tickled if
- 30:36Speaker 1: we can go to like a four way tiebreaker, so
- 30:38Speaker 1: keep it up. Yeah. Question nine, the topic is biology.
- 30:44Speaker 1: This next great question comes to via brand Jamison. If
- 30:47Speaker 1: you have a question you think is right for Meat
- 30:49Speaker 1: Eater Trivia, you can send it to trivia to meat
- 30:51Speaker 1: eater dot com. This mosquito transmitted virus that causes birth
- 30:57Speaker 1: defects first appeared in the United States and twenty sixteen
- 31:01Speaker 1: when a Miami community had an outbreak. This mosquito transmitted
- 31:07Speaker 1: virus that causes birth defects first appeared in the United
- 31:11Speaker 1: States in twenty sixteen when a Miami community had an outbreak.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Some quick answers in the room, But it didn't seem
- 31:21Speaker 1: like those folks are very over here. What are you
- 31:25Speaker 1: reading off of broad either sum okay, I got an
- 31:29Speaker 1: answer written down? Okay, okay, ok squerman or the corner.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Danielle looked real confident, though I feel like the last
- 31:38Speaker 1: time I had trivia it was we had a similar
- 31:40Speaker 1: question and I got it wrong. Yeah, well it's not
- 31:44Speaker 1: I think the answer I have given a lot of
- 31:48Speaker 1: hints here twenty sixteen. This mosquito transmitted virus one that
- 31:53Speaker 1: causes births first appeared in the United States in twenty
- 31:57Speaker 1: sixteen when a Miami community had an outbreak. As Brett
- 32:04Speaker 1: is immune to all, explain that I have a Brodie's
- 32:09Speaker 1: about a new tattoo I have in my arm. I
- 32:11Speaker 1: came here right from the tattoo parts. That is right.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Do you recognize what that is? That's how it should sit.
- 32:20Speaker 1: There's an ink blob that's building there. Yes, this is it.
- 32:24Speaker 1: That is the dog from the Duck Hunt video game
- 32:26Speaker 1: who's holding up a double that he killed. If you
- 32:29Speaker 1: were to kill a double in the game Duck Hunt,
- 32:31Speaker 1: the dog would show up holding both of the ducks.
- 32:35Speaker 1: That is the tattoo that I just there a significance.
- 32:39Speaker 1: You use that as a trivia question. You've had that
- 32:41Speaker 1: as a trivia question before. It was about the nineteen
- 32:44Speaker 1: eighty four video game Duck Hunt, which about half the
- 32:46Speaker 1: room got. The other half wrote down duck Hunter, which
- 32:49Speaker 1: is not correct. I think we need a spencer tattoo
- 32:53Speaker 1: related trivia question. How much did that tattoo set you back?
- 32:58Speaker 1: Three hundred dollars? Three hundred? Okay, it's that going to
- 33:03Speaker 1: change your mind about getting one, Clay, I mean if
- 33:06Speaker 1: I was hoping to get a little bit bigger one.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Do you think they give me a deal on a baby?
- 33:11Speaker 1: Are are you really considering getting one? No? Does everybody
- 33:15Speaker 1: have an answer? Again, this is a question about the
- 33:17Speaker 1: mosquito transmitted virus. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 33:22Speaker 1: have Danielle saying West Nile, Tony saying Zeka, Brent saying
- 33:27Speaker 1: West Nile. Case is saying Zeka, Mark saying malaria, Jason
- 33:32Speaker 1: saying Zeka, Clay saying Zeca, Brody saying Zeka. They got it.
- 33:35Speaker 1: The correct answer is the CDC issued travel advisories for
- 33:43Speaker 1: expecting parents in twenty fifteen to multiple foreign countries that
- 33:47Speaker 1: had Zeka. Then they did the same in twenty sixteen
- 33:50Speaker 1: when it appeared in Florida. The CDC reported two hundred
- 33:53Speaker 1: and twenty four cases of Zeca that were acquired in
- 33:56Speaker 1: the United States in twenty sixteen, seven cases in twenty seven,
- 34:00Speaker 1: eventeen and zero. Ever since, Phil, we have one question left.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I think that made things interesting. Where do we stand? Well, now,
- 34:08Speaker 1: Brody and Ksey are tied up in first place with
- 34:11Speaker 1: six points. But I'll have you know he's sitting in
- 34:14Speaker 1: my normal seat. Oh you think that has something to
- 34:17Speaker 1: do with it? Oh, it was calculated. I was the
- 34:19Speaker 1: first one in here. Very uncomfortable. Yeah, smart move Casey. However, Danielle,
- 34:24Speaker 1: Mark and Tony are still very much in the game
- 34:26Speaker 1: with five points. Okay, okay, last question, seems like we're
- 34:31Speaker 1: due for a tiebreaker. Question ten. The topic is fishing.
- 34:36Speaker 1: What brand was ordered to pay low rants his parent
- 34:40Speaker 1: company thirty eight point eight million dollars for down scan
- 34:44Speaker 1: imaging patent infringement in twenty seventeen. What Brand was ordered
- 34:51Speaker 1: to pay low Rants' parent company thirty eight point eight
- 34:55Speaker 1: million dollars for down scan imaging patent infringement in twenty seventeen.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Tony with a quick answer, Tony, are you going to
- 35:04Speaker 1: get this one right? I'm gonna be real close. If
- 35:07Speaker 1: I don't, you probably own the boat with the most
- 35:09Speaker 1: electronics in this room, would be my guess. You think
- 35:12Speaker 1: that gives you an advantage here? Uh? It might? Okay,
- 35:16Speaker 1: it might. You look the most confident. There's only like
- 35:19Speaker 1: three guesses here that they have, maybe five. What Brand
- 35:25Speaker 1: was ordered to pay low Rance's parent company thirty eight
- 35:29Speaker 1: point eight million dollars for down scan imaging patent infringement
- 35:34Speaker 1: in twenty seventeen. I'd like to buy Vell. I like
- 35:39Speaker 1: that first vel emphasis you put on low Rants. I'm
- 35:42Speaker 1: into that. Okay, I'm into that. Low Rance's parent company
- 35:46Speaker 1: was ordered to get paid thirty eight point eight million dollars.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Brody, You're gonna get this
- 35:56Speaker 1: one right? No comments? Casey, are you gonna get this
- 36:01Speaker 1: one right? I'm kind of stanting where Tony is okay,
- 36:05Speaker 1: feels like a tiebreakers on the way. It's hard to
- 36:07Speaker 1: be great at this game. If you have two holes
- 36:10Speaker 1: in your life. One hole you can get away with
- 36:14Speaker 1: two holes. You don't stand a champishing and cooking and fishing. Danielle,
- 36:21Speaker 1: how are we doing? I can't even think of a
- 36:23Speaker 1: brand that's not gonna help you. Go ahead and reveal
- 36:29Speaker 1: your answers. We have Danielle saying bass pro Shop, Tony
- 36:33Speaker 1: saying Hummingbird, Brent saying Minkota, Casey saying humming Bird, Mark
- 36:38Speaker 1: saying humming Bird, Jason saying Hummingbird, Clay saying Shimano, Brody
- 36:43Speaker 1: saying Garment. We have a correct answer in the room.
- 36:47Speaker 1: The correct answer is Garments best Brodie Henderson with the buzzer.
- 36:58Speaker 1: The patent feud between Jay, the patent feud between low
- 37:04Speaker 1: Rants and Garment had been playing out in court since
- 37:06Speaker 1: twenty fifteen before a Texas judge sided with low Rants.
- 37:10Speaker 1: The great irony is that just a few years prior,
- 37:13Speaker 1: low Rants was sued by Hummingbird over patent infringement for
- 37:17Speaker 1: side scan technology. So a lot of folks who said
- 37:20Speaker 1: Hummingbird that was a logical answer, but it was not correct. Brodie,
- 37:24Speaker 1: well done. Seven correct answers makes you the winner. Now
- 37:28Speaker 1: you get to choose where the five hundred dollars donation
- 37:30Speaker 1: from meat Eater goes. So what's it going to be?
- 37:34Speaker 1: You know? Can we have a vote? Have we ever
- 37:39Speaker 1: done that before? Do whatever you want with some money.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Start throwing out some names. Come on now, Western Native
- 37:45Speaker 1: trat Initiative, peasants forever? Does it have to be one
- 37:48Speaker 1: of these? On? This can be whoever you want, as
- 37:50Speaker 1: long as it has a tie to a conservation organization,
- 37:54Speaker 1: Meal Deer Foundation. Man, I've done them a couple of times.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Arkansas Game and Fish Found All right, we'll do that one,
- 38:06Speaker 1: called it next time. Now, who are we Who are
- 38:09Speaker 1: we donating to you here? Brent? The Arkansas Game and
- 38:12Speaker 1: Fish Foundation. What do you like about that? They do
- 38:14Speaker 1: a tremendous amount of work, not only for the state
- 38:16Speaker 1: of Arkansas, but for the for the people that work
- 38:20Speaker 1: in the agencies that like we did. We did a
- 38:23Speaker 1: big money razor not too long ago and got to
- 38:27Speaker 1: go on a Bardian study with the biologists. Through money
- 38:31Speaker 1: we raised, they were able to purchase a bunch of
- 38:33Speaker 1: GPS collars for Bears and did some some extra stuff
- 38:37Speaker 1: that they didn't have in the budget to do. And
- 38:39Speaker 1: these folks help support that too. Very good. Now, I'll
- 38:41Speaker 1: have you know, Brody has never done this before, he's
- 38:43Speaker 1: never taken advice. He's in a good mood. He'll do
- 38:49Speaker 1: that for him. Join us next time for more Meat
