- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Dan Hurley the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show
- 0:03Speaker 1: and the Basketball Coaches Show airing on Thursday this week
- 0:08Speaker 1: where we tape it after practice on Wednesday. Wednesday was
- 0:12Speaker 1: National Signing Day. Dan a couple of the prospects coming
- 0:16Speaker 1: to Yukon Junior County colbyan Landrew. When you when you
- 0:21Speaker 1: go after young men, you are going to be freshmen
- 0:24Speaker 1: coming into the program. What's the general recruiting philosophy that
- 0:28Speaker 1: you use when you're trying to decide, Okay, this guy's
- 0:32Speaker 1: going to really help us.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's a lot that's going on.
- 0:36Speaker 3: You're you know, you're obviously trying to assess character, maturity,
- 0:44Speaker 3: you know, who are the people influencing the player?
- 0:46Speaker 2: Like, what are they all about? What do they stand for?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Do you do you?
- 0:50Speaker 3: You know, are you aligned the values? Are you aligned
- 0:54Speaker 3: with the vision of how the career is going to
- 0:56Speaker 3: play out. I think we've been able to hold onto
- 0:59Speaker 3: a lot of of, you know, players that may have
- 1:02Speaker 3: transferred out, but I think things that have saved Solo
- 1:05Speaker 3: and some different players that didn't play as much as
- 1:07Speaker 3: they wanted as a freshman was just having a shared,
- 1:11Speaker 3: you know, honest vision of the player while you recruit them.
- 1:14Speaker 3: You know, we're not over promising every player and telling them, hey,
- 1:18Speaker 3: you're going to be a one and done. It's not
- 1:20Speaker 3: like cookie cutter recruiting. So I think our honesty and
- 1:25Speaker 3: just how clear we are about how you know player
- 1:28Speaker 3: is going to have to earn certain things, and what
- 1:30Speaker 3: the timeline is going to look like, how long we
- 1:33Speaker 3: expect them to be on campus. I mean, there's all
- 1:35Speaker 3: that stuff, and then you're looking at the player during
- 1:37Speaker 3: the summer. Do you believe in the talent?
- 1:40Speaker 2: You know? Do you do you believe in the field?
- 1:41Speaker 3: Do you does the player look like he's over rated
- 1:46Speaker 3: and delusional or is it a player that you think
- 1:49Speaker 3: can get a lot better and is on.
- 1:51Speaker 2: The way up.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah? Well, listen, everyone faces the reality of transfers. Guys
- 1:58Speaker 1: leave because they're not getting what they want out of
- 2:01Speaker 1: the program. Per se. You lost a couple of guys
- 2:04Speaker 1: last year. When you get guys in like you every
- 2:07Speaker 1: year you get a couple of freshmen, you know, Jacob
- 2:09Speaker 1: Furphy now with you and Eric Raiba and you get
- 2:13Speaker 1: a look at him in the summer. Can you tell
- 2:16Speaker 1: within a few weeks that I made the right call
- 2:18Speaker 1: or do you have to wait until we get into
- 2:20Speaker 1: the games and find out, Well, this guy's going to
- 2:23Speaker 1: be just what we thought he was. He's got to
- 2:25Speaker 1: be good for us.
- 2:27Speaker 3: You know, I would say, you know, pretty good pretty early.
- 2:33Speaker 3: You know, like if they're not the players aren't you know,
- 2:38Speaker 3: like flashing, I mean they're most young players. They come
- 2:41Speaker 3: in and it's struggling straight away. I mean it's not
- 2:45Speaker 3: you know, we've had a guy, including Staff or Donovan
- 2:49Speaker 3: or any of the you know, the guys that are
- 2:50Speaker 3: being the most successful in the NBA, they've gotten their
- 2:53Speaker 3: butt kicked, you know, pretty much early on. I mean,
- 2:56Speaker 3: Donovan was getting destroyed by Adama until you know, until
- 3:01Speaker 3: a month or six weeks in then he's Yeah, but
- 3:05Speaker 3: even early on he was flashing, but he was still
- 3:07Speaker 3: you know, he was still losing, but he would make
- 3:10Speaker 3: a big play where he's saying himself, when this guy
- 3:12Speaker 3: figures it out, you know, this is this thing. So
- 3:15Speaker 3: when the players aren't flashing like that for you and
- 3:18Speaker 3: they're just getting their butt kicked, you're you're saying that
- 3:23Speaker 3: you're starting to maybe have some questions, but you never
- 3:25Speaker 3: give up on the player. You know, I even't had
- 3:27Speaker 3: a player that I've ever asked to leave here, you know,
- 3:30Speaker 3: the players. I think that we've never had a player
- 3:32Speaker 3: want to leave here.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's saying something, that's for sure. We're going
- 3:37Speaker 1: to talk to Jayden Ross a little later in the show.
- 3:39Speaker 1: He and Jalen Stewart and their junior seasons got some
- 3:43Speaker 1: you know time last year and then made some contributions
- 3:46Speaker 1: and both guys are making contributions again in their junior seasons.
- 3:50Speaker 1: What does it say about this program that you were
- 3:52Speaker 1: able to hold on to these guys because you know,
- 3:55Speaker 1: the way it is today, players are very impatient. They
- 3:58Speaker 1: always think the grass is greener. And I'm sure you
- 4:01Speaker 1: had discussions with these these guys in the off season
- 4:04Speaker 1: and you don't have to tell me what you said
- 4:06Speaker 1: to him, but it must have worked because they came back,
- 4:09Speaker 1: they're working hard, and they looked like they're going to
- 4:11Speaker 1: be contributors this year.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, if you.
- 4:15Speaker 3: You know, if you go, if you play college basketball
- 4:18Speaker 3: at Yukon, it's hard to play college basketball at another place.
- 4:22Speaker 3: You know, it's like it's a special place. It's a
- 4:24Speaker 3: handful of you know, a small number of schools where
- 4:28Speaker 3: like the best places you can go and play college basketball.
- 4:30Speaker 3: So that helps you know the way that these guys
- 4:34Speaker 3: are connected, the culture that they're able to form the
- 4:37Speaker 3: team to team that gets passed down. And then how
- 4:40Speaker 3: I think how hard the coaches work for the players.
- 4:43Speaker 3: You know, I think that the players appreciate how much
- 4:47Speaker 3: that the coaches invest in them, and I think that's
- 4:49Speaker 3: why you know, they'll take you know, some you know,
- 4:54Speaker 3: me ripping them or the player or the other coaches
- 4:56Speaker 3: coaching them hard.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Because because of all those things, A couple.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Of big, big picture topics. Dan here, if we could
- 5:04Speaker 1: Big East a couple of years ago, had just three
- 5:06Speaker 1: teams in the NCAA Tournament. Kind of some rough results
- 5:09Speaker 1: here to start the season. Villanova lost to be at BYU,
- 5:13Speaker 1: no shame in that. But Georgetown had a good win
- 5:17Speaker 1: at Maryland, but Creighton got whacked, Gonzaga to Paul lost
- 5:21Speaker 1: at home to Buffalo, Santa Clara wanted Xavier. These early results,
- 5:26Speaker 1: does that tell you anything about the conference? Or do
- 5:28Speaker 1: we have to get into the conference season to really
- 5:30Speaker 1: find out what these guys are about.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I mean it's early, you know, it's early. Most of
- 5:34Speaker 3: us have only played you know, two or three games,
- 5:38Speaker 3: you know, just got to you know, we've got to
- 5:41Speaker 3: as a league to try to put each other in
- 5:44Speaker 3: as good a position as we can and for our
- 5:46Speaker 3: own you desire to get more teams in and to
- 5:50Speaker 3: have better metrics. You know, we obviously, you know, we
- 5:53Speaker 3: got to try to finish up strong here. I think
- 5:56Speaker 3: that's it. I don't want don't do what I did now.
- 5:58Speaker 3: We last year where you lose one game and you know,
- 6:02Speaker 3: it kind of becomes this crushing loss and it turns
- 6:04Speaker 3: into multiple you know, it's like we've had some good wins,
- 6:07Speaker 3: we've had some bad losses. So of a lot of
- 6:09Speaker 3: other conferences, let's just.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Go yep, yep.
- 6:14Speaker 1: What about ratings and stats early on? I mean, you
- 6:17Speaker 1: talk about this as the season goes on. Right now,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you're i think fourteenth in the country, points allowed, tenth,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and field goal percentage by the opposition. Are those meaningful yet?
- 6:27Speaker 1: Or is there a little bit of a trend that
- 6:30Speaker 1: you can hang your hat on?
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah? I think the.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Numbers are a reflection of how you've performed.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I think you know pretty you know pretty clearly.
- 6:42Speaker 3: You know you're not going to have a real sense
- 6:44Speaker 3: of how good you are until you've played several you know,
- 6:47Speaker 3: really high level teams. See what the numbers look like
- 6:50Speaker 3: once you get ten, twelve, fifteen games into the season.
- 6:55Speaker 3: You know, there's the predictive measures I think, you know,
- 6:59Speaker 3: give you a sense of who's got the most returning
- 7:02Speaker 3: and and who's got the best chance to have a
- 7:05Speaker 3: good year.
- 7:06Speaker 2: But it doesn't always.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Reflect Yeah, all right, going to wrap it up with
- 7:10Speaker 1: my book report. I was in the Noble the other day, Yeah, looking.
- 7:14Speaker 2: For your book. Did they have it?
- 7:17Speaker 1: Was in Yeah, and it was prominently displayed by the way,
- 7:21Speaker 1: was it really Yeah? I was walking over, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 1: I get my Starbucks there, but I saw the table.
- 7:26Speaker 1: I go, oh, there it is.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Dan Hurley's book.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Never stopped.
- 7:30Speaker 2: It was pretty cool. I liked it.
- 7:32Speaker 1: So anyway, they got you in a prominent spot at
- 7:34Speaker 1: Barnes and Noble.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Anyway, Yeah, you know, it's fun.
- 7:39Speaker 3: It's Dan Hurley something to find something probably negative about
- 7:42Speaker 3: almost any situation. It's just it's it's what keeps me
- 7:45Speaker 3: on edge and on guard. I remember the one we did.
- 7:48Speaker 3: The day the book was out. I went to the
- 7:52Speaker 3: Barnes and Noble that I would usually go to and
- 7:56Speaker 3: they didn't have it in the store. The day it
- 7:59Speaker 3: was released in Antiquette.
- 8:01Speaker 1: So that Yeah, that's a bummer.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Have been, all right, coach, I'm ordering online now. No.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I like bookstores still.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I'm just one of my I love bookstores. I love
- 8:17Speaker 2: walking around I I do too.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I'll be back, but I'm mad, amazing, amazing what you
- 8:22Speaker 1: find in bookstores anyway. All right, coach, appreciate you. Uh,
- 8:26Speaker 1: we'll see you in Boston.
- 8:27Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I'll be back with more of the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 8:30Speaker 1: Coaches Show on lear Field in a moment
