- 0:58Now, here are the host of The United, We scan podcast.
- 1:05Welcome back everybody. We're on episode twenty sixth.
- 1:10Kristin's going to be joining us a little bit later.
- 1:13We're a little short on people today.
- 1:16Bill is off on vacation and Mike is doing his State Convention,
- 1:25so he won't be able to join us tonight but Kristin will be
- 1:28joining us later and right now we've got Josh on.
- 1:32So Josh, how was your week? We are weak was pretty good.
- 1:36They've got found out towards the end of the week.
- 1:39They have the rule Cattleman show later position of permit
- 1:45again. So I am trying to get my
- 1:50application filled out and for that I actually have a
- 1:54supervisor that is going to give me the reference that it is
- 1:59required or, you know, to apply. So I'm keeping my fingers Has
- 2:04crossed but not holding my breath.
- 2:07Hey, I've got this whole week and then part of the following
- 2:13week and then it'll be months now and I'll be off for a week
- 2:16and a half for my State Convention so which is father's
- 2:20days that week Father's Day week.
- 2:23So that'll be fun to be out of the office and away for a little
- 2:26bit, but we can talk about that more next week.
- 2:30Yeah. How's the disputes?
- 2:32Go in your office, they get them all out.
- 2:36Well, from what the 204 B was saying.
- 2:42Who doesn't usually talk to me? That I Other than a class-action
- 2:47dispute that I put in, and my ADR asked me to you, add a
- 2:53secondary, zip code for that class action, which is where the
- 2:58postmasters offices, which would Encompass the whole office of
- 3:02Charlotte for which information, we found out at the last minute,
- 3:08that should have been inclusive. What was mine?
- 3:10There was one other person that may have filed as a acute that
- 3:15was off on this or something. Or I'm not sure if it was only
- 3:19some vacation during the time of the meeting, they'll survey.
- 3:23But I don't know anything about what their dispute specifically,
- 3:26were they out of, which is kind of disheartening a little bit
- 3:30out of I think 18 routes. Those were the only disputes
- 3:35because I know a bunch of people did go down.
- 3:37So, I think a lot of people decided not to dispute just
- 3:44because they're sick of dealing with it and didn't want to have
- 3:46to put in the effort to deal with it.
- 3:48Unfortunately, for my office, my postmaster made everybody
- 3:52disputed And so this whole week, you know what it should have
- 3:57been. I think in The 4400 routes in
- 4:03the state of North Carolina and the North Carolina District, I
- 4:06think my ADR said they were anticipating over 4000, just use
- 4:12Yeah. Granted, I know each individual
- 4:15item need to be its own dispute, so I don't know how many of
- 4:19those translate to per round, but I like I said, I know, I
- 4:26personally, I put this one in at like I said, as a class action
- 4:31to cover all the other carriers, I / I'm sure there were errors
- 4:35but I personally already, I was a 48k beforehand.
- 4:41I came back. Back as a higher. 48k, I just
- 4:44didn't want to give them more ammunition to cut more off of me
- 4:48when it actually happened, you know, when they actually do cut.
- 4:50So Yeah, but next time in October, I will be using a fine
- 4:57tooth comb to go to that paperwork and find.
- 4:59What? Doesn't add up.
- 5:01Yeah, little very short notice for this and very short dispute
- 5:06process. And I think, even now we still
- 5:09don't have enough information to properly distribute this stuff,
- 5:12but my week was pretty good. I mean, mail volume was actually
- 5:16heavy for the first half of the week and then very light for the
- 5:19last half of the week. Packages.
- 5:23Amazon was extremely light. Yeah, Friday, for me, which was
- 5:27surprising. We didn't get much Amazon, but
- 5:31everybody in my office, got called into the postmasters
- 5:34office to fill out. Dispute forms at the beginning
- 5:37of the week to get everybody and every single route was disputed
- 5:42in my office. So we're part of that group
- 5:45that's actually disputing at all.
- 5:46So he goes look that is the route didn't change and I still
- 5:50disputed it. Get your boy.
- 5:52You know what? I'm sure if you know if the
- 5:56numbers don't add up the numbers don't add up.
- 6:00You know, I'm playing and that was the point of the dispute
- 6:05processes. If your numbers weren't adding
- 6:07up based off of what information you were able to obtain, you
- 6:11know, and I know it's a shame, I saw where the Facebook groups in
- 6:16the last week or so that they went, they wanted to dispute
- 6:20things. But they said, how can I just
- 6:22cute if management is telling me they can't give me?
- 6:2652 weeks worth of data from the reports.
- 6:29How can I dispute? What was, you know, what is good
- 6:34or bad? I was a unfortunately, it
- 6:37doesn't help you for now. But what you can do is have your
- 6:39management print, those reports out for you, daily going forward
- 6:44and keep copies of them. Exactly.
- 6:48And we have to do all the legwork, unfortunately we do.
- 6:52But with the old count system, you kind of had to do the same
- 6:55yourself. So really that was only two to
- 6:58four week period versus a 52 week period now.
- 7:03Yeah. So but if you have starting, you
- 7:06know, if you go on on the computer with any spreadsheet
- 7:10type program, you can kind of as you go, just fill it in and
- 7:16it'll just add, you know, if you know what the code, you know,
- 7:19the codes are you can put in the codes to add the next line, just
- 7:25keep adding So you get, so you can get that cumulative, total
- 7:29at the end rather than having to go through a Year's worth of
- 7:33data all at once. Yeah, exactly.
- 7:37So anyway, continuing on this week, we're going to talk about
- 7:43relief carriers arcs RCA's and PTs and we have a special guest
- 7:49with us. He is an RCA.
- 7:52He asked to remain anonymous so we're going to call him Clyde.
- 7:56Say hello Clyde and tell us a little bit about what's going on
- 7:59in your world and how your week was.
- 8:02Hello peoples, big fan of the podcast.
- 8:07I appreciate you guys doing this.
- 8:09I hadn't listened to every episode but most and then I
- 8:12heard that a bill wasn't going to be here this week and I
- 8:16thought I'd show people what grumpy really was and told
- 8:21Kristen I was available. My week was good.
- 8:23I work in a single route office and Washington.
- 8:26Foothills of the Cascades foreign Birds familiar real
- 8:29predictable lifestyle. Low hectic.
- 8:35Is a it's it's not hectic at all.
- 8:37In fact, a lot would call it boring.
- 8:39So it's been good. I'm working only five days a
- 8:43week. Wow, lucky you one right off the
- 8:46so who covers the route when you're not there, postmaster who
- 8:52need to get another RCA in there to cover when you're not there?
- 8:55Yeah, them. Boy, yeah.
- 8:58No, yeah, no. I'm on his ass about the scans
- 9:02for sure. And we've been trying to hire
- 9:04for about a year, maybe Flirtin With a year and a half and any
- 9:08responses we get people. It's either they're driving
- 9:11records or their inability to find the email in the junk mail
- 9:14folder to move forward. So not a real, not a real
- 9:19popular job like this. That and in this day and age,
- 9:25people are not looking for that job for one day a week anymore.
- 9:29And on top of that if they can't find it in a junk mail folder,
- 9:31how can we trust them to use a scanner?
- 9:35It is, it is a bit of an idiot filter and away.
- 9:40So Kristin's going to be joining us later.
- 9:42So we're going to start out with questions.
- 9:45RCA's would have when being at the post office starting out and
- 9:52Getting acquainted with what they're doing.
- 9:55So Josh you have a question, go ahead and start this off.
- 10:00Let's see. Let me start with Clyde.
- 10:03How long have you been with the Post Office?
- 10:06Three years. Three years.
- 10:09Okay, see, the kind of season that this point have you always
- 10:13been in this one? Route office?
- 10:15Or yes. And I always will be until it
- 10:19disappears in which case I'll move on to greener pastures, my
- 10:23commute is currently four and a half miles and nine minutes and
- 10:29I'm liking it I live on my route.
- 10:32So I don't think I mean if they, if they make it interesting and
- 10:37I make regular and start getting retirement benefits of my stick
- 10:39around past but yeah, we'll see what happens with this whole s
- 10:43DN c-- thing. If I've got my the correct
- 10:45letters in their own land. What's that guy?
- 10:49Because he's talking about is the consolidation.
- 10:53Yeah, they moving you to a plant.
- 10:55No, we perceive no word, at least through the management
- 10:59side. I've just been following it on.
- 11:02I forget how get close. Are you to the plant?
- 11:07Yeah, so I don't know if you guys have seen the articles, I
- 11:10don't know if it's to save the post office.com that puts this
- 11:13out or something, but they've taken all the information.
- 11:17The USPS has put out publicly regarding these consolidations
- 11:21and they built an interactive map and the the proposed
- 11:26locations and then they throw down.
- 11:28What is it a 20 minute drive time for a radius and five
- 11:32miles? 25 miles.
- 11:36Well last I heard which was a year ago.
- 11:40They were talking about any office within a 30-mile radius
- 11:44of wherever these consolidated. Places, we're going to be.
- 11:52Yeah, so I we sit right on the outside of of whatever that
- 11:57original mileage was. I'm I mean, they've been talking
- 12:00about this. What for well, way over a year,
- 12:03anyway, in terms of implementing like what was the first one in
- 12:08Georgia, somewhere on the east coast and what somewhere in
- 12:11Atlanta, or New Orleans? Yeah.
- 12:15So no we're are tiny little setup is right outside on the
- 12:20actually tried to close it. 20 20, something years ago or no,
- 12:26it was more because I think Clinton was in office at the
- 12:28time and the local community raised hell and they kept it.
- 12:34So they don't know anything about this consolidation plan
- 12:37though. I'm waiting for for concrete
- 12:39information before I accidentally leaked it to the
- 12:42locals. Yeah, you accidentally under the
- 12:45covers, you get out there. Hey, your post office is
- 12:48closing. Yeah.
- 12:52I want to stay here as much as they want to keep it here.
- 12:54So we'll see. Right.
- 12:58Well in the funny thing is is a lot of these offices are
- 13:04consolidating routes but they're still going to be burning the
- 13:07offices because of the storefront retail.
- 13:12Yeah so the local mean you could still go there and the Box
- 13:16sections can still go there and get their PO box.
- 13:19Now they can still go there and buy there.
- 13:21And for money orders or send their, you know, send their
- 13:27packages off. That already know you.
- 13:31I can tell you. That's not going to stick
- 13:33around. That's not going to stick
- 13:35around, though. I have another case Point here
- 13:37is a not. There was an office near me that
- 13:41the carriers were in and they move them to an Annex about 10
- 13:45miles away from the office, and they were working the front
- 13:49counter out of that office, and then, that office had something
- 13:53happened to it. And so, they closed the office,
- 13:56and then they just tore the office down.
- 14:00Her Joy. Well, I
- 14:15shifted was they were in a basically, the retail was a
- 14:21storefront in a strip mall. So, I don't know, once they're,
- 14:30you know, I heard rumors that once least was up, they were not
- 14:33going to renew it. But the last I heard they were
- 14:38still in that building. That was years ago but I know
- 14:43like the carrier's. This is the second and third
- 14:45building, some of these carriers you know, the truth will free
- 14:49zones through my office. Now To of what the one on the
- 14:55end came from one office because it's over overcrowding.
- 14:58And the other one came the other two came from the same facility.
- 15:02One came to my office, the other went to a different office that
- 15:06other office got, or should say, station got overcrowded.
- 15:11So, they move that zone back to our building.
- 15:15And now it's a matter of we are the airport location, literally,
- 15:22the two runways run. Literally one in front one in
- 15:25back of our building. The airport has already told us,
- 15:30they want their land back. We were supposed to be out like
- 15:34a year probably sometime last year, but then they extend
- 15:40allowed us to extend e. Or our lease for at least one
- 15:46more year, because they've got a project going on.
- 15:49And I guess there, they told us we can stay until that project
- 15:53from plate. so, even if they don't do the consolidation in my
- 15:59area, My office. The 50 router.
- 16:05So, they're in my office are probably going to go to the
- 16:08plant because it's I doubt, they're looking for another
- 16:11building especially if this consolidation project is going
- 16:14to go start spreading around eventually, but I heard that
- 16:18Charlotte has been released from that list completely of
- 16:21consolidations. So but again we'll see what
- 16:25happens from the next couple of years.
- 16:31Question that a lot of RCA's again lost to see a task is I
- 16:38was told I'm only guaranteed one day a week.
- 16:41Can I do anything to boost the amount of days that I work?
- 16:47The amount of money I can make at the post office?
- 16:50Now, you're guaranteed one day a week at your office.
- 16:55Supposedly, unless you're on the J route.
- 16:57Now that was a route this knowledge, a route, then you one
- 17:00day every two weeks But he's right, you're not guaranteed any
- 17:04days except for their vacation or sick.
- 17:07Exactly. But you also, you could have the
- 17:10opportunity of Amazon Sunday if your office does Amazon, but you
- 17:16also can call around call their offices in the area see if they
- 17:23need help. There's a lot of offices that
- 17:25are short-handed now and they're desperate for help.
- 17:29And if you're not working, you can go work at these other
- 17:32offices. You have to get permission from
- 17:36the postmaster there to go work for them and work it out with
- 17:39your postmaster to make sure that they don't go.
- 17:42Hey, I need you to come in and work at my office, because if
- 17:45you volunteer at another office in your office calls, your
- 17:48office takes priority. On the other hand, if your
- 17:52postmaster tells you, you need to go to this office and do work
- 17:58your post. Master can't pull you back to
- 18:00do. Your route at your office
- 18:01because you're already under the old scheduling at the other
- 18:04office. Yes, so that's how it works.
- 18:08If you volunteer, you could be recalled.
- 18:11If you're told to go, you won't can't be recalled anyone on a
- 18:17add on that. I'd just like to say that I'm
- 18:20thankful that I don't have that problem.
- 18:26Well, I think they'd be kind of screwed if they tried to do that
- 18:28with you. Yeah, now is your office a
- 18:31standalone where? I know it's or u.s. attached to
- 18:36another office? Yeah.
- 18:39Standalone, one ZIP code to counties.
- 18:44We have three other offices. Probably each 15.
- 18:48It's drive away, but they're all.
- 18:53So crowded on this big room postmaster.
- 18:57Yep. Okay, the next question we have
- 18:59for RCA's so we have multiple routes in our office that are
- 19:03down and we're not getting instructions.
- 19:06So we're splitting the routes ourselves.
- 19:09What do we do? First off management should be
- 19:11telling you how to split the routes.
- 19:13You should not be doing that on your own.
- 19:15It is Management's job to manage how the routes get.
- 19:18It is their job to tell you how to split the routes out, who's
- 19:22taking what, and so on and so forth.
- 19:25Make management do their job. On top of that, there are scans
- 19:29you have to do for every route. No matter what.
- 19:33And if you're splitting a route, make sure you talk with the
- 19:36other carrier. This splitting the route with
- 19:37you. If I find out, who's in putting
- 19:39the extra scans for that route because the days, you guys are
- 19:43splitting. It still count towards the total
- 19:46evaluation for that route. There's a handy guide that was
- 19:50put into the group on Facebook about splitting routes.
- 19:56And you should look at that and see what actually can be input
- 19:59for split routes. That should be input as given by
- 20:02the rural letter carriers Association and consult with
- 20:06your Local Union steward on that as well to try.
- 20:09And make sure that you do it the right way to ensure you get the
- 20:12maximum benefit for each route in your office.
- 20:15Thoughts, I agree 100% with you. I will say, however, if once
- 20:22management says James Clyde, Billy you guys are going to be
- 20:27taking the split in this route. The three, you should know what
- 20:31you do, and don't know what the route.
- 20:33And if they don't specifically tell you work it out and say,
- 20:35all right, I'm going to take this section.
- 20:37You take the second, you take this section.
- 20:38I'm going to, you know, I'll put it all up yet.
- 20:42You guys put it on the street or whatever, unless they
- 20:45specifically tell you they should be showing you what?
- 20:49But if you guys know what your strong points are in regards to
- 20:52that route, if not if it just says you three or splitting it,
- 20:56you know, if that's all they say three, get together and say and
- 21:00decide what's going to be the best, easiest quickest way to
- 21:04get it tastes old down and delivered.
- 21:07But like James said, it's supposed to be Management's job
- 21:10to schedule and if their schedule includes splitting a
- 21:14route, it's who's putting what? We're there were there.
- 21:18Instructions and the original Rex guide, let's go with the
- 21:22revised original Rex guide, the April 22 or their instructions.
- 21:27On in there about how to handle the scans on Route splitting.
- 21:30I don't, it's been a while since I read it through, and that's a
- 21:34topic what a skipped because it didn't affect me.
- 21:36I don't know. I think it was not in the
- 21:39original. Yeah, last year, I don't think
- 21:42they put anything out because of like everything else.
- 21:45They didn't think about that. As an issue or they probably
- 21:55figured that if people were splitting the route, it would be
- 21:58thrown out like when you miss scans, but we're going to find
- 22:01out that even even when you're missing.
- 22:08Another big question that comes up.
- 22:11As how do I handle second trips? If I drive a POV route, or if my
- 22:18Lov won't hold, all the packages that are carried by Amazon,
- 22:22especially those super large ones, you're still going to get
- 22:2680, you're going to get green card.
- 22:27Time for that. Anything you do after the route,
- 22:31you go on p.m. casing your scanner because you're still
- 22:35going to be assigned to the route on your time card.
- 22:38And then you do an 80, you do your green card to match.
- 22:41That. So whatever time you have p.m.
- 22:43casing is the time you write on your card, your green card to go
- 22:49out and deliver your second trip.
- 22:51Then when you get back, you clock out right that time on
- 22:54your green card and you're done for the day.
- 22:56You got to make sure you do everything everything for the
- 22:59route first before you go on p.m. casing and then you can do
- 23:03your second trip now with that hold true for an RCA working a
- 23:08route that's evaluated at less than 40 hours.
- 23:11A week and they don't have at the end of this second trip.
- 23:15Let's say it's Friday and they don't have 40 hours for the week
- 23:18yet. Yes, it's still the same same
- 23:20second trip rules for for RCA even if they're on a hold down.
- 23:27It should still be the same. Now I would consult your local
- 23:32union representative on that but I was always told that it was
- 23:36Green Card time for RCA's or three minutes per mile for a
- 23:40regular carrier. Now there's three minutes per
- 23:42mile now we should be too but now it's three I was blown away
- 23:46when that came out weeks back not impressed but just surprised
- 23:52the not even cracked. But if better better than what
- 23:55it was, I wish I would have doubled it.
- 23:57I wish I would have been 4 minutes per mile because back
- 23:59when the two minutes per mile is put in gas was like 60 cents,
- 24:02some 60 cents a gallon, I mean, yeah.
- 24:06You get you get the EMA and all that stuff but you know for me
- 24:11like I'm my route. I have a I have a 28 mile route.
- 24:16So if I go three minutes per mile and I go deliver a package
- 24:21for mine, I'm mostly getting six to eight miles to go deliver it.
- 24:27Is it worth me to do that? Second trip.
- 24:31I'm going to spend it. Spend an hour and a half
- 24:33delivering for you know, three minutes a mile Now worth it act
- 24:41in the long run, but it's worth it for the Post Office.
- 24:44It's not brings us. That brings us to the other
- 24:47point of package delivery as a second trip.
- 24:53If they're scanned after you leave.
- 24:58It's time. It's 8127 time or green card
- 25:02time for RCA's for delivery of perishables that were scanned
- 25:07after you leave. If they were scanned before you
- 25:11leave, you sorted them, they're on.
- 25:14They're ready to go stage, ready to go.
- 25:17It's second trip, but if you have to sort them, put them in
- 25:22order to go deliver them because they scan them after you left,
- 25:25especially Amazon that comes in late.
- 25:30Then you have to do it on 8127 time.
- 25:33Get with your local union representative to ensure that
- 25:35you do it the right way. Can you think of a question for
- 25:38our stead RCA's would have Clyde?
- 25:41Yeah, so hmm. And this was more of a I haven't
- 25:45seen it. Talked about lately and I don't
- 25:46know if there was a change in the last contract regarding the
- 25:5050 mile distance rule regarding RCA's being sent to other
- 25:55offices in voluntarily. You've I'm sure you.
- 26:00At least read some discussion about actual drive distance
- 26:04versus 50 mile radius. My understanding was, it's 50
- 26:08mile radius. So in my opinion it says radius.
- 26:12Which means as the crow flies, right?
- 26:14You can drive 65 miles to get to a post office 49 miles away.
- 26:19You can see it. Pick your you, you still get
- 26:23compensated for all the miles, you actually drive, but you
- 26:26should be, you should be compensated from your office.
- 26:30To that office e.e. travel a lot of offices.
- 26:34Try not to pay that, but you should be compensated on E
- 26:37travel on that. I like, I like the benefit, I
- 26:41like to benefit my postmaster on that and if I'm closer to the
- 26:46post office, then the office is, I'll do it from my house to that
- 26:50office. If I know I'm going there in the
- 26:52morning, but if it's if it's further from your house then
- 26:56from the post office here at unfortunately, But you're going
- 27:00to have to do is it's from your base office, but carrier
- 27:04discretion, you can always do it straight from your office to
- 27:07there, but however, you want to do it.
- 27:09Yeah, there's been a lot of intensity on that topic.
- 27:14Maybe maybe Rex is over shouted, it the last year, but the
- 27:18concept of radius first actual miles and being able to say, no.
- 27:22Well, that and if you actually look at all the documentation,
- 27:28you won't find the Where it says, 50 miles.
- 27:31It says, which I think it's within a right?
- 27:34It's not regular to you but something similar.
- 27:37Yeah, I've seen it. We think a reasonable within a
- 27:41reasonable commute. A reasonable commute is thought
- 27:44to be up to 50 miles, which is where that number comes from.
- 27:48And that's kind of the Union's definition and what their stance
- 27:51was on that one that came out, right?
- 27:53And I'm reading the Riddler for well, contract.
- 27:56I can't I can tell you that. What was put out at least
- 28:02through local meeting, you know, the ARG districts ratification
- 28:08meeting. Was the intent was to be for
- 28:14that. Yes, it's within a reasonable
- 28:17commute. The intent was, for example,
- 28:21neighboring offices, local of offices near you and it turned
- 28:25into the up to 50 miles which unfortunately in some areas,
- 28:30they take advantage of that. For example, with FSF, when they
- 28:34first introduced, the FSS years ago, they held they held Any
- 28:40office that were affected by it. And all this is within a
- 28:4550-mile, radius We're froze for converting RCA's to regular due
- 28:52to the possibility of xi's regulars from their routes going
- 28:58down so much that they disappear.
- 29:00Hmm. I got hit by that because
- 29:04Greaves that when they first introduced it to Greensboro
- 29:07District, which is the northern part of the state had few
- 29:12machines they set up. One street on one route in the
- 29:22city of Charlotte fell within that mile circle Froze.
- 29:26All of was a two-year phrase coming up on the end of that.
- 29:31Two years, they realized they didn't need two machines in
- 29:35Greensburg so they were going to disassemble the one machine
- 29:39transport it down to Charlotte. I'm reassemble it.
- 29:42So they extended that point that two years of one more year so it
- 29:47was 3 years. Then once the machine got turned
- 29:50on in Charlotte it started a new two-year fries that was five
- 29:56years that I was in our city. You know what couldn't even
- 30:00convert if I wanted to that's all which is why it took me.
- 30:03Nine years to go regular. I got one time in three years,
- 30:07I've been sent to another office and it was, it was like I was
- 30:12mentioning earlier in my example, it was 49 miles away.
- 30:16Radius It took me an hour and a half to get there and an hour
- 30:19and a half to get home. And they gave me their, second
- 30:22largest route to do. And and I do have to give them
- 30:27credit, they cased it all and pulled it down for me.
- 30:31I was originally supposed to use my POV when I got there and I
- 30:35had a mechanical problem. So while they were getting the
- 30:38mail ready, I was at the local Napa discovering that I couldn't
- 30:43get fixed as quick. Sweet hope.
- 30:45So, I ended up in an LLC V that I've never driven on an actual
- 30:48route before. This is actually my first three
- 30:50months. It was a, it was a nine and a
- 30:52nine point to our route and yeah I was gone from home for 14
- 30:57hours that day, I was super pissed but then when my p.m. my
- 31:01p.m. had texted me in the afternoon ask me how things were
- 31:04going and I told him all about it.
- 31:06He was very familiar with that office and he too was pissed
- 31:09which was nice, thankfully, and he said that he that he wouldn't
- 31:13do that to me again. So and it never has happened.
- 31:17Um but yeah I just think yeah the radius things are problem
- 31:21doesn't take into account. Well, it's like everything
- 31:23around here. People throw a number at
- 31:25something and assume that it's a fair application to every
- 31:29circumstance. When it clearly is not throw
- 31:33this at you. I'll throw this at you.
- 31:35There is a post office up in the up' of Michigan that's down in
- 31:40that little tip of Michigan there, that actually can reach
- 31:43across the lake into Wisconsin and that Post office on the Tipo
- 31:48Wisconsin. There is 49 miles away.
- 31:51Consider, it's a two-and-a-half-hour drive to get
- 31:53there, but it's in another district.
- 31:58And I think that's also the other caveat to is, it has to be
- 32:01in the same district. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:03I don't, I hope that's the caveat, at least.
- 32:05Yeah, I hope so, too. I'd be asking for the, I can't
- 32:08speak for that because, yes, we are short-handed but, you know,
- 32:15as a office is a Was my station and an office as a whole were so
- 32:20big. Where I don't want to say
- 32:22self-sufficient, but we'd be the one sending people elsewhere.
- 32:25You know what I mean? Not the other way around.
- 32:28Having a bring people in how many routes in my station or the
- 32:31office office about 250. Whoa in verses 23, 20 in
- 32:40Wednesday 2018. We were the second largest rural
- 32:43office in the country. In nineteen, we were the The
- 32:47third largest. I'm not sure where we are now if
- 32:50we going back to second or maintain, but I'll have to see
- 32:54if I can find that out at our station mention weeks.
- 32:57Is that one postmaster for 250? Yes, 250 World routes, probably
- 33:05400 City routes in rural routes are in 9 of 15 delivery ins.
- 33:13Could you imagine being a postmaster, overseeing 250 Rural
- 33:17routes and Rex comes out and you got 250, 250, sweaty, pissed
- 33:22off. Carriers, come on Dia, all with
- 33:25unique problems on the routes. Well, he is office.
- 33:30Is on the second floor plan. He has you guys are exceptions.
- 33:35Office has a man, a station manager and Michael super
- 33:40supervisors. How many supervisors in my
- 33:42station, we have the station manager and Free supervisor to a
- 33:48poor baby do any of them know what they're doing?
- 33:50At least halfway, one of them knows exactly what he's doing.
- 33:54He was a sitting carrier he knows for some crap inside and
- 33:57out he can go to any in the one zone, which is the Zone he
- 34:01tightens and startup which is not have any career outs.
- 34:04He can walk in case you say I start here, he knows for a
- 34:10stuff. But at this point because he is
- 34:13very Hands-On and noses, Intend you and has done lots of lights
- 34:20and just watches the rest of the management team.
- 34:23Just either hiding the office or sit on their ass and do nothing.
- 34:26He's like, fuck it. I'm done.
- 34:27I will come in, you my job. I will go home at this point.
- 34:30He is waiting. I think there's like three more
- 34:33years till he's old enough to look like an tsp and he's out.
- 34:37Good for him. Yeah.
- 34:38So he has 20 years military behind him too.
- 34:41So it's you already has. He already has one pension
- 34:44glutton for punishment. Yeah I know we discussed this
- 34:48one before recently their last week of the week before the
- 34:52question RCA questions. How do we get paid?
- 34:55You either get paid the round evaluation Green Card time or if
- 34:59you work 40 hours or more a week on a route, you'll get straight
- 35:05time and time and a half for anything over 40.
- 35:07If you do 39.99 hours overall, you've worked, you clocked 39.99
- 35:14hours. You will earn the Nation for all
- 35:17the routes you did. If you work 40 hours, you will
- 35:20learn 40 hours. It does not matter.
- 35:23Whether you are the fastest carrier in the office of the
- 35:26slowest carrier in the office. If you are getting back before
- 35:30evaluation time and you hit 40 hours, you get paid 40 hours
- 35:35because we got to that is within the first 10 weeks, you get
- 35:39paid, which is 5K periods. You will get paid.
- 35:42Whichever is greater evaluation or Or hourly.
- 35:48So if it's a 42 our route and it took you 45 hours, you'll
- 35:53actually get paid, the 45 hours, 45 hours if you are around and
- 36:00you get when we work 39, you'll get paid before T2 and if your
- 36:04unevaluated route and your you work, well, that route actually
- 36:09reading everything. I was asleep.
- 36:16Apparel 39 hours. Instead of the 27 it should have
- 36:22been you'll get the 39 hours pay.
- 36:25Yep. Because your hourly for those
- 36:27first ten weeks is greater of those those weeks.
- 36:31So even those carriers that work one day a week, you do a 9-hour
- 36:35route, need a half, you get the nine hours.
- 36:37If you do that, nine our route and 10 hours, you get 10 hours
- 36:41right here. Make sure you check your
- 36:42paycheck every week and if you need a break down on that ask
- 36:46Buddy, ask your Local Union, steward, ask your carrier next
- 36:50to you, if they understand how the paycheck breaks down, go to
- 36:53your postmaster, ask them how the paycheck breaks down.
- 36:55Make sure it's right paychecks. Do have a habit of being messed
- 36:59up big time. They could miss in putting a
- 37:03route that you did one day they could miss putting in the entire
- 37:06week always check your paychecks.
- 37:08This reminds me of the only copy of take a picture of your green
- 37:12cars. In the 42 40s to show the
- 37:14timesheets for the route. This this reminds me of a And
- 37:17I've had for two and a half years.
- 37:20Green has there, has there ever been a concerted effort by the
- 37:25carriers or the union to make our pay stubs?
- 37:30Make just a little bit more sense, especially for the
- 37:33newcomers. Once you learn how they're put
- 37:35together, you can understand them better.
- 37:37The hardest part is determining between because you have you
- 37:41have to follow federal guidelines when it comes to the
- 37:44pay especially your flsa say the pay is broken down into several
- 37:49sections. One of them is actual work hours
- 37:52which is the time you actually work then then you have your
- 37:56route hours what the route actually pays.
- 37:58And then if you have EMA that's also broken down on there.
- 38:01And if you have holidays or you get a time or doing facilitate
- 38:07doing mapping P time for mapping fats, have it on there, the
- 38:11separate line item. It's just basically it's a
- 38:14complete breakdown of the work that Did that week.
- 38:18So why don't they? I mean, think polymers that are
- 38:22working multiple routes and, you know, at the end of their week,
- 38:27they're dizzy, they're tired. They're dehydrated, they hate
- 38:30their kids and they can look at their paycheck.
- 38:33They don't know what they did one dated from the other and you
- 38:35know, that the USPS has any information, what they did on a
- 38:38daily basis, why not at least provide the information on a
- 38:41day-by-day and you can do we can show a weekly summary but why is
- 38:45there this avoidance of Owing each individual day.
- 38:49Well, I would say to answer your question, I personally am not
- 38:54aware of where anything is, but I know there are, there is
- 38:59poking around somewhere and find it on the internet somewhere.
- 39:05They teaching of how to read the face of BOE.
- 39:10I've seen that there's a YouTube video.
- 39:12Yeah, there's YouTube video out there.
- 39:14There's also a break But there is a sheep with a broom, you're
- 39:19breaking up. So I said, there's a breakdown
- 39:23of what the different codes are and what everything means, you
- 39:27know, on a cheap. And it stood, if you worked
- 39:31three different routes, it should break down on your pay
- 39:34stub, what those three routes were with the what your actual
- 39:39hours were for that route. Was it a government vehicle or a
- 39:45govt and if so, um a-and what the actual work hours were what
- 39:51you actually get paid for that route for that day.
- 39:54Evaluation was for that route that day.
- 39:57So let's see you work for about 12 months Saturday and Monday
- 40:03route to on Wednesday had off Thursday and route for free on
- 40:09Friday. It should break down Route One.
- 40:13To trip, you know, two trips on Route One, what your total hours
- 40:18for those two days you worked what the pay was for those two
- 40:23days of beyond the actual worked hours that you're getting paid
- 40:26for route to one trip? What your actual hours were
- 40:31versus your, paid out your work hours and get paid for and
- 40:34Route. 31 trip. What your actual hours were
- 40:38versus your paid out. And then was it, POV r.e.m.
- 40:42Rob government vehicle. So it should be as RC should be
- 40:47breaking that down and then I can't remember what they're
- 40:49using for what anymore either 99 or 999 as old jewelry time.
- 40:56Which is a green card time. Yeah.
- 40:58It's just. My point is that, if they would
- 41:00just show all your numbers by day, instead of lumping it all
- 41:06into one week. I mean, you know, they don't
- 41:09even like on light blue, there's not even a nice vault Correct me
- 41:13if I'm wrong. I've never found it a legend
- 41:16that helps a person understand their pay stubs example, those
- 41:19three different code. Now there anything you would
- 41:22have to get a hold of one of those.
- 41:23Two sheets are like you said look up that YouTube video that
- 41:26someone graciously put you know put up.
- 41:30Yeah that's digging on our gear or talk to your local union
- 41:34store. Get to know your Local Union
- 41:36steward. They're there to help.
- 41:40Help you break it down. I know at least in my area
- 41:46either at the end of every day or week, or they have a notebook
- 41:55and they jot down what they did from what time to what time, you
- 42:00know. Yeah.
- 42:01So they can go and track it at the end of it.
- 42:03So come Friday, when they get their pay stub or Tuesday,
- 42:07Wednesday, when they go to Lakewood, what these are peso,
- 42:10They can say, alright, this works out, this works out, this
- 42:13works out. Wait, this is all and that way
- 42:16they can go back and surprised and say, hey this isn't I can't
- 42:21find this time here to be able to get it corrected.
- 42:24I say yeah that that is your best.
- 42:27Bet is to notate won't but somehow whether it's like I said
- 42:32taking a picture of your green card and the 40 40, which is the
- 42:36timesheet for the route and are having a little Position, you
- 42:40know, little spiral book or something and just know Kate.
- 42:44I know there's apps also out there that you can enter the
- 42:49inner times in and break it down.
- 42:52I'm not sure what any of those UPS or because I personally
- 42:55didn't use them. But I know there's a few, at
- 42:59least a few, the people I've seen on Facebook over the last
- 43:02couple of years. As people said, oh, I use this
- 43:04track my time. Yeah.
- 43:06And you want to keep your own, keep your own paperwork.
- 43:09Keep track. Yourself.
- 43:10If you need to talk with your local Steward, they could
- 43:14probably get you. An internal, see a calendar
- 43:16little pocket calendar that you can use to write down your times
- 43:20on or buy a pocket. Calendar at a local office
- 43:23supply store. Anything you can just do to have
- 43:27something to keep track of what you're doing, but what I can
- 43:31tell you, the one nice thing about the, the, you know,
- 43:35getting a union calendar is, it'll tell you what, the The
- 43:40beginning of each pay period, which pay period it is and what
- 43:45the paydays are. So you can kind of keep track
- 43:48that way but can't can't guarantee or promise that
- 43:54they'll be able to get you that. But if you are, you know, you
- 43:58have a rep. That's nice enough to give
- 44:02everybody. Get you one and can get you one.
- 44:06Have you a great resource because you can see when people
- 44:09read starting at? Yeah.
- 44:10I'm a I'm a big fan of photographing the 4240 or the
- 44:15green card. I hear so many stories on
- 44:19Facebook groups, about allegedly people's supervisors, or
- 44:23postmasters putting in lunch breaks for them, and stuff like
- 44:27that. And it's just nice to have a
- 44:28record of the original. I meant that you signed off on
- 44:32before handing it all over for the through, you know, the end
- 44:35of the pay period. Yeah.
- 44:38Definitely isn't better late than never.
- 44:41I was just going to say, yes, I went out to dinner with
- 44:47everybody. So I am here.
- 45:48Now, that you're back with us. Where do I begin?
- 45:52Well, that's a beginning would be good.
- 45:55We'll start with Monday being the holiday.
- 45:59I had. Go in and case male, I was the
- 46:02only one that showed up. So I had the 3 K3 heavier K
- 46:06routes. I got case tonight, was it
- 46:08Tuesday and it up being a 13 and a half hour day for me, I had to
- 46:16run my primary and my auxiliary on Tuesday.
- 46:20And then when I got back, I then had to go take the last 45
- 46:24minutes, off of the other sub to get him back.
- 46:27And it was about 8:30, when I finally collect out, Out.
- 46:31Actually, it was 12 and a half hours for me, because I started
- 46:33an hour later than everybody else.
- 46:35Yesterday. Really, really, really sucked
- 46:38Thursday and Friday were pretty good.
- 46:40I just had my Ox route, then at 10:30 Friday night, my regular,
- 46:46and my primary route who happens to be a really good friend of
- 46:49mine calls me. He was having some pain and
- 46:53thought it'd be best to go to the ER, and in couldn't get
- 46:57ahold of his son and nobody else really did.
- 47:00He came so at 10:30 at night, I was heading out to go.
- 47:03Pick him up and the hour drive to the ER luckily.
- 47:07It wasn't that major, and it was about 4:30 in the morning.
- 47:11When we got home he had a doctor's note to put him off for
- 47:13yesterday. Unfortunately, they wouldn't
- 47:16give me one. But so after about an hour and a
- 47:19half of a nap, if I even slept that much, I then had to go in
- 47:25round the 45k and split my primary route with With the two
- 47:30other RCA's who have, never carried that route over before.
- 47:35So yesterday ended up being about 11 and a half hour a day
- 47:39on about an hour of sleep that sums up my week.
- 47:43Blast forgot one detail about Monday.
- 47:47What was that? Has the post office.
- 48:02There's started at 11:00 and because of my house is only
- 48:07literally, a block away where my road is to turn down to go home.
- 48:12I had to sit at the post office and wait for the parade to
- 48:15finish so I could go home. Luckily, it was a short one.
- 48:18So 15-20 minutes that was it, we were talking RCA questions and
- 48:24figuring out answers for RCA's there.
- 48:27Anything you want to add to that.
- 48:28Any questions you had? I don't have questions.
- 48:31I still am an RCA. Well I meant questions that
- 48:35modern RCA's would ask. Well what are we going to pay?
- 48:41We've gone over the being sent to other offices.
- 48:45We were going to what else would we go over?
- 48:47A lot of stuff. Actually, three of you guys, I
- 48:50have not been listening obviously because I was like I
- 48:53will have to go back. Yeah, that's what I'm reviewing.
- 48:58What we what we Discussed so far.
- 49:02I've got one, go ahead. Go for it.
- 49:07It's kind of a niche takut Niche topic POV.
- 49:11I don't know how many of those are still out there.
- 49:13I'm one and there's a lot of people actually.
- 49:17I'm not going to, I'm not going to reveal my opinion.
- 49:21I'm going to ask you guys. What what what what the rules
- 49:26are regarding having a backup vehicle?
- 49:30You're already required to have your one vehicle for a POV
- 49:33route. Of course there's The Perennial
- 49:36argument about whether all RCA's are supposed to have a POV and
- 49:41seems like the Postal Service hasn't even tried to enforce
- 49:44that in recent years. But what happened?
- 49:46What do you what you ve thing? Technically the job description
- 49:51does stay. That an RCA is supposed to have
- 49:53a vehicle available and it's the same as it goes with the regular
- 49:58carriers that you You are supposed to have a vehicle
- 50:02operational for the route. It does not say that you are
- 50:05supposed to have two vehicles. It just says that you are
- 50:08supposed to maintain a vehicle to run the route with and then
- 50:14what do you tell the mouth breathers that come back and say
- 50:17to you. Not the contract says you got to
- 50:20have a vehicle in good working order so go rent one from Hertz
- 50:26or go Club your grandma over to head and steal her Cadillac.
- 50:30I can get a buddy to drive you around.
- 50:34Yeah. See, that's that, that that's
- 50:37the issue, especially with offices that are only povs.
- 50:41I I've had that issue to where I have had povs breakdown and I've
- 50:47used a daily driver which was not male friendly interest me.
- 50:52I have borrowed a vehicle from a regular to run the route in the
- 50:57past. It eventually the post office is
- 51:01goal Liz to have a government vehicle and every route.
- 51:04But until that actually happens, which I'm never going to hold my
- 51:07breath for because it's, yeah. I would be long dead before that
- 51:11actually happened. I was what they wanted when they
- 51:13started with the Jeeps. Yeah, I've had one.
- 51:16I've had a car, and drove me, the rest of the route.
- 51:22I'm I had well, and that drive me on the route a couple times
- 51:27because the car broke down in the middle of the road.
- 51:31Well, he wasn't it. X at the time, he's a next
- 51:33single. But I've used my boyfriend's
- 51:36full-size Chevy truck to deliver a 93 mile route.
- 51:41And I remember correctly. The actual verbiage in regards
- 51:46to that is all rule carriers with the exception of regular
- 51:52carriers assigned to around with a government vehicle.
- 51:58Are required to have. A vehicle for driving.
- 52:02And in a cape, I remember correctly and Academy.
- 52:06We were told that for to be a good vehicle for delivering, you
- 52:09must be able to use your left foot in hand to driving steer
- 52:13and be able to extend your right arm out.
- 52:15Six inches at least six inches out of the window for a right,
- 52:18or a left hand drive vehicle. Obviously sucks for short
- 52:26people. Like I said, I'm just saying
- 52:30that. What we were told going through
- 52:33the academy that was what 16 and a half years ago.
- 52:39Like you just said Clyde that. Now, it's a matter of whether or
- 52:43not they say, even tell you, you need a vehicle available in,
- 52:47like Christy said with these metres fans That they just you
- 52:52know they they purchased a couple years ago and they're
- 52:55supposed to be a second phase of those coming soon.
- 52:58They wanted to they primarily are going to rural routes that
- 53:03are povs and some of the city routes that had the old old
- 53:09Grand Caravans. They were looking to replace
- 53:13with these. Which are very few and far
- 53:17between anymore. Yeah.
- 53:18So there's no way there are just routes out there that I mean,
- 53:22whether it's an electric vehicle with its range limitations or
- 53:26whether it's freaking LLB from the 80s, there's there's routes
- 53:31out there predominantly gravel. I mean don't neither one will
- 53:34work. I mean the electrical and might
- 53:37survive after a week but the rattle exact forget it.
- 53:42I know. I know my route is going to
- 53:44destroy. One of those new electric ones
- 53:46for sure within the first week and I have only 50 percent of my
- 53:50routes gravel and they sensed it from the 10% electric electric
- 53:58ones are going to hit the southern states more than they
- 54:01are anything. Northern because you can get,
- 54:03you start getting up north and where we get the cold
- 54:06temperatures that's going to kill that battery life.
- 54:10Those electric ones are going to go to Inner City, Urban route.
- 54:14I'm gonna go to sleep. Go to City, carrier is a the
- 54:17electric ones are going to go to City carriers because one, first
- 54:21of all, we don't have the infrastructure for any electric
- 54:24vehicles at the moment. So not only you talking to
- 54:26Vehicles. Now you have to purchase all
- 54:28these charging stations. It's y'all them to the grid?
- 54:32Yep. Yeah, like my office, we can see
- 54:35we can set it up in my office. We've got a 12 route office.
- 54:39We can actually set it up in our office, but like they were
- 54:43saying 2020. Hundred fifty route office.
- 54:46There's no way that grid is going to handle charging, 250
- 54:49Vehicles, well, and I know there's you, let up amongst a
- 54:54bunch of other stations, but still you're looking at.
- 54:58I got an office down the road for me.
- 55:00That's 70 routes in it. That office going to have 70
- 55:04electric vehicles charging. At the same time.
- 55:07What's that going to do some power grid to be?
- 55:14regardless building, if these are new buildings and he's real
- 55:25and you know Postmaster General is having them redone completely
- 55:31as part of the rehab, they could put in the charging stations
- 55:36through the parking lot for these vehicles but she did Like
- 55:42do we all agree that our cities are not required to provide two
- 55:46vehicles, or a backup vehicle, correct?
- 55:50It's not contractual. It doesn't say, you have to have
- 55:53two vehicles. It just says you have to have a
- 55:55vehicle, right? The doctor handle to handle the
- 55:59daily volume of mail, the daily volume of mail.
- 56:04So you could have a little Ford Escort that can handle your four
- 56:09trays of deep deep EPs and two trays of flats and it's an
- 56:14adequate vehicle. If the necklaces are, the
- 56:17problem is that a clear distinction that they stick to
- 56:20this day? I think a lot of people find
- 56:23that distinction to not be accurate, it will have its in
- 56:27the P. 603 that is supposed to handle the average daily volume,
- 56:33average, daily volume in, it says of mail.
- 56:37I think it does say mail and packages but I will.
- 56:41Part three is so I couldn't I couldn't tell you right now and
- 56:46take, you know, it and a lot of it is is in my opinion that if
- 56:53it's not all going to fit in llv, I shouldn't have to buy the
- 56:57largest Ford Transit possible to be able to deliver all the
- 57:01packages that are on my route. Well, I can tell you from
- 57:05experience. I know I young lady.
- 57:08I forget what she was driving. It was an SUV.
- 57:11SUV or minivan type thing and because she ended up, couldn't
- 57:19fit all the packages in the vehicle.
- 57:22Every day they try telling her, she had to get a better a bigger
- 57:24vehicle, she grieved it. And as part of her statement for
- 57:29in her grievance, she's quite in the cubic feet in the interior
- 57:36of the vehicle, which was larger than an LLB, which ended up
- 57:41Killing that from management because her vehicle was already
- 57:44larger than the government vehicles being used so far.
- 57:48Say, you know, she would say, you know, the argument was if
- 57:52there was an LLB on this route which is not as large as this
- 57:57would you make, would you be, would you be required to change
- 58:00the LLB to a different vehicle? So a larger vehicle, okay.
- 58:05And the p60 three section 14 equipment and supplies, carry
- 58:09responsibilities vehicle. Equipment.
- 58:11You are responsible for Furnishing all vehicle
- 58:14equipment. Necessary for safe and prompt
- 58:16handling a mail. Unless the USPS owned leased
- 58:19vehicle is assigned to the route vehicle requirements.
- 58:23Your personal vehicle must be large enough to accommodate the
- 58:26normal mail volume and constructed to protect the mail
- 58:29from loss or damage commercial advertising months.
- 58:32Not be displayed on your vehicle by serving the route.
- 58:35I like all the were used to the word vehicle is singular at this
- 58:38point and not be fools. Each day you serve a route using
- 58:43your own vehicle, the USPS pays you the EMA in accordance with
- 58:47the applicable schedule. Addition, when X of God, prevent
- 58:51you from performing your duties, a postmaster must pay authorized
- 58:55administrative leave. You'll receive EMA for each
- 58:57service day you report to the post office and are scheduled
- 59:00for form. Delivery, exceptions, USPS owned
- 59:05or leased vehicle. If you fail to serve any part of
- 59:08the route, due to lack of proper endeavor, Operate equipment or
- 59:12other failure for which you are responsible.
- 59:14To actions are made from your salary.
- 59:16Ma for partial failure. Deductions are made at the rate
- 59:20of pay per mile for services on routes of 30 miles and lasts for
- 59:25failure to perform services on part of the route and excessive
- 59:2830 miles deductions are made at the rate of paves for such
- 59:31additional mileage. See that is all.
- 59:36I am seeing. That is the 603 there's no say
- 59:39you have to have a backup vehicle.
- 59:41You know, and I agree 100%, you shouldn't have to have a, a
- 59:46backup deal vehicle because now you have the expense of if
- 59:50there's a payment which let's face it.
- 59:52Nowadays, you're not real. Realistically not getting into a
- 59:56vehicle without payment and then what about our students?
- 1:00:00Yeah and then what I mean Vehicles, right?
- 1:00:08Require maintenance. Sure people can do an oil
- 1:00:11change, but what if you throw a belt or something?
- 1:00:14And then bar, you got a brake line that goes out or, you know,
- 1:00:20we go through pads and rotors and calipers, you know, I have
- 1:00:25in my experience, I've been at that part store at six am
- 1:00:28grabbing calipers rotors and pads.
- 1:00:31And I'm out there in the driveway at 6:30 in the morning.
- 1:00:34Changing out my Break. So I can be in a work by 7:00
- 1:00:367:30. I've done it.
- 1:00:39Unfortunately, I mean, it's unrealistic and especially with
- 1:00:44RCA's or even regulars in routes, would know, RCA's our
- 1:00:49coverage available. to any type of maintenance done, or if you
- 1:00:55have a breakdown and then what What if your suspension goes
- 1:01:01out, you're not going to be doing, shocks.
- 1:01:04And struts by yourself, you're going to have to go to somebody
- 1:01:07who has a spring compressor to be able to fix that.
- 1:01:11Are you just drive down the road with it with it bouncing?
- 1:01:14Like I do? Oh yeah.
- 1:01:17Oh yeah. You look like you got Hydraulics
- 1:01:20as you're delivering the mail. Oh yeah.
- 1:01:22It's about Oz. Mm.
- 1:01:23Hey, that's the only car I have right now to drive.
- 1:01:26So Shh bouncing. That was that was going to be
- 1:01:30the flip side of my comment. There was there is no
- 1:01:34requirement. But if you know you have an
- 1:01:37older vehicle that potentially is going to have or not against
- 1:01:42Lee will have maintenance issues.
- 1:01:43It might not be a bad idea to try and find something as a
- 1:01:48back-up plan. Yes.
- 1:01:53As I say a back-up plan, especially for RCA's.
- 1:01:57I mean, if you're one of those in a somewhat staffed office,
- 1:02:02and you're only working, two, three four, maybe 10 days a
- 1:02:07month and not going to be able to afford insurance on two
- 1:02:11vehicles, depending on, well, I come from Michigan.
- 1:02:15We have astronomical insurance rates anyway, so, you know, it's
- 1:02:20hard to afford to be able to do that.
- 1:02:22You could have something go out. I've had a gas pump, go out on
- 1:02:25me, and on the route, You know, stuff like that is going to
- 1:02:31happen and it's always good to have at least a back-up plan and
- 1:02:38I was raised in my household. Anyways, we always had backup
- 1:02:41for the car and back up for the backup.
- 1:02:43I've always had access to at least another vehicle that I
- 1:02:47could probably somewhat maneuver on a mail routes but, you know,
- 1:02:51not everybody has that availability.
- 1:02:54So it's just like For example, I just had a monthly and a half
- 1:03:00ago, you know? So my sister-in-law's car
- 1:03:03because the engine blew one, my wife's car and the timing belt
- 1:03:08skipped and blew the engine on first.
- 1:03:11So within six months, I had two vehicles, dial me or I have or
- 1:03:17I, you know, I kept my POV, I was thinking about getting rid
- 1:03:21of it because I've been running all alvear outs forever.
- 1:03:24And even when I do do my primary Reroute, I usually do it in
- 1:03:27coordinates with my Ox route. So I get to use my Ox truck
- 1:03:30instead of using my POV, and I actually thought about getting
- 1:03:34rid of it. But I'm like, no, I'm not going
- 1:03:35to wait, I'm going to wait until I go full time and I know I'll
- 1:03:38be on the llv route than I don't have to worry about it.
- 1:03:41Which I was actually really glad I did.
- 1:03:42Because, you know, when you have irresponsible teenagers who just
- 1:03:45take other people's cars and total them out, anything can
- 1:03:49happen, how us how you really feel And before I got my before
- 1:03:58I got a new vehicle, I was lucky enough that my buddy who lives
- 1:04:03by himself was kind enough to lend me his right hand side
- 1:04:08sleep so I could get to and from work.
- 1:04:11Well, I'm on an LLP route. So I didn't need it for work,
- 1:04:14but I needed to be able to get, you know, something reliable to
- 1:04:17get to. And from, you know, it's funny
- 1:04:19because I love talking to him and he's like, God, you know,
- 1:04:22when I asked him after, you know, he took a day to just
- 1:04:25think about it. It and he said, oh, you know,
- 1:04:27call me back the next morning, so let me know.
- 1:04:30Yes, he would let me and he starts humming.
- 1:04:33Oh, don't worry, you know, when you first turned on this like
- 1:04:36this, like this, like this like going to come on, you know, the
- 1:04:39airbag light because it's a factory conversion.
- 1:04:43Hmm, so they took the test and the left hand side.
- 1:04:47Seat out to put the mail. Try in, which means they had to
- 1:04:50disconnect the left hand side. Airbag was Connects the whole
- 1:04:56airbag systems that lights on. Then he has like two or three
- 1:05:02other White's on the Davenport I have.
- 1:05:04I don't even know. Who knows what that would be.
- 1:05:07Like proper the proper Jeep, Christmas tree?
- 1:05:10Yes. Yes.
- 1:05:12That's what he says. He's like, you like the
- 1:05:14Christmas tree. Then he saying, so when you get
- 1:05:17down, you know, when you feel he's like use the trip whenever,
- 1:05:21you know, when you fill it up with gas because when it gets
- 1:05:24down to under three quarters on between a half and three
- 1:05:28quarters, the fuel light are the check engine light comes on.
- 1:05:37Well, so I'm like, it gets down to the 3/4.
- 1:05:41I'm like, and then it goes down, you know, gets almost almost to
- 1:05:45the halfway point that came on. I'm like, okay.
- 1:05:48And I have the kid in the car, with me in the backseat because
- 1:05:52I figured out how to move the carpets and whatever and put
- 1:05:55back seat up. So because he keeps the seats
- 1:05:58down because he uses that He takes it on the route, use for
- 1:06:01the packages. So we, so the kids somewhere to
- 1:06:05sick with a seatbelt, we stop on the way home at McDonald's for
- 1:06:09once. Well, you said it was a sitting
- 1:06:13at just over a half tank Benito, just go sit down to eat in the
- 1:06:19world fluid, you know, the I'm thirsty.
- 1:06:23Bitch. Light came on.
- 1:06:24I'm like, now, I know he's talking about when I talk to him
- 1:06:28the next day and told. Him about it, which it was or
- 1:06:31I'm sorry we do that afternoon when I crank it back up, it was
- 1:06:34fine again. He says, yeah.
- 1:06:35That's knew. I'd never seen that one before.
- 1:06:37My great don't tell me this thing's gonna die, too.
- 1:06:42So yeah. So according to the pixel P,
- 1:06:44603, you're just supposed to have a vehicle, doesn't say
- 1:06:47You're supposed to have a vehicle and a backup vehicle
- 1:06:50doesn't think Vehicles know but is not plural, it just route,
- 1:06:55ready, vehicle that can handle the date.
- 1:06:59Mail volume yes. Have you guys seen this problem
- 1:07:02show up in Grievances and your time?
- 1:07:05I mean have you seen this thing? You know, because I read tons of
- 1:07:11stories where post managers or supervisors are basically
- 1:07:14bullying people into going out and steal another car.
- 1:07:17I've seen it over and Bill's area.
- 1:07:19I don't think we've been around long enough for that and I have.
- 1:07:22All right, I personally have not experienced any one, having a
- 1:07:29Issue with that. But I know I know people who
- 1:07:32have had their POV, they were out, you know, they ended up
- 1:07:35having to go out for a cup of day or two where we can
- 1:07:40depending on what was wrong, because they couldn't get the
- 1:07:44time to do maintenance, and it was either they called out for
- 1:07:48the bay. So they could do whatever
- 1:07:50maintenance we needed to do, change the oil brake pads, you
- 1:07:55know, just routine maintenance that you have to do every so
- 1:07:58often or it. Got to the point where it was
- 1:08:00not running and they had read the day or two or weak, and
- 1:08:04couldn't get another vehicle. But then again, that week, they
- 1:08:08were burning sick sick. Well, annual time after putting
- 1:08:11his transportation is the reason and not getting the EMA that
- 1:08:16week looking up some other stuff.
- 1:08:18See if we got any automatic transmission, is not required
- 1:08:21according to a step 4 in 1985. I would say I can tell you when
- 1:08:28I went through the academy, the instructors that I had would not
- 1:08:35approve a stick if you are straddling.
- 1:08:38Now, the reason that it would be it would be in the way and you
- 1:08:43could not get out of here. But how do you operate the
- 1:08:45clutch from the right side of the car carefully.
- 1:08:50Gotta help. Delivered out of a Ford Escort,
- 1:08:58at one time. Stick shift.
- 1:08:59I said, how do you do that? It goes.
- 1:09:01You keep it in second gear and just keep going.
- 1:09:04Yeah, you're not going faster than that.
- 1:09:10And if you have that much deadhead time, you're supposed
- 1:09:13to be behind the wheel. Anyway, your sisters when there
- 1:09:15was a lot less packages to right.
- 1:09:17Well, I something from technically, in a POV when you
- 1:09:20get, when from the post office, to your first box, you're
- 1:09:24supposed to be behind the wheel. and then if you have get a time
- 1:09:28from one neighborhood to another, You're supposed to get
- 1:09:33back behind the wheel and then switch over.
- 1:09:35When you get to the first box in the next neighborhood.
- 1:09:37I knew someone that the way her, she had the actual pedal for the
- 1:09:42emergency brake. She we got she had a cane that
- 1:09:45she would use a push to push down because she had the
- 1:09:48conversion kit with the pulley, with the belt from the old wheel
- 1:09:53with the pedals. So to hit her emergency brake,
- 1:09:55she would had a cane and you just just she just said in
- 1:09:59there, you know, off the side and she read it.
- 1:10:01And then when She got in and got it cranked up and everything she
- 1:10:05used. Came to push it down to release
- 1:10:07it. Another question that we keep
- 1:10:09popping up and seeing in places is what happens with an act of
- 1:10:14God. What happens, how do we get paid
- 1:10:16for stuff like that? You know, we're in tornado
- 1:10:19season. We've had post offices, get hit
- 1:10:22with tornadoes. We also have post offices that
- 1:10:25have been sunken blizzard and major.
- 1:10:28Snowstorms somebody want to go ahead and answer that one.
- 1:10:32Well, if the ministry of leave, it can mostly RCA's are.
- 1:10:41They were scheduled to. We Are Legion work.
- 1:10:44If it's a caller, if they're calling you off due to an act of
- 1:10:48God. If you were scheduled that day,
- 1:10:50it could be. I would have to double check.
- 1:10:53So don't quote me, it could be a stir, it like force, a few
- 1:10:59service, an ox row, or you're a designated 74.
- 1:11:02Or your schedule, the regulars on a Caribbean cruise and you
- 1:11:07get stuck during blizzards season, you know, if you're on
- 1:11:10the schedule, it was should fall under the administrative leave
- 1:11:13as well. If you're able to make it into
- 1:11:17the office. And there's mail to case but
- 1:11:22they're not going to send you out.
- 1:11:25Then you would still get paid the evaluation of the row.
- 1:11:29Yeah, an RCA should get a minimum of two hours.
- 1:11:32They were scheduled. I yeah, I can't speak from
- 1:11:36experience, but I would say it would more than likely you would
- 1:11:41more than likely have to go. I remember reading process for
- 1:11:45that, but again, I don't know. I never had the, you know, what
- 1:11:50I said, and they 16 and a half years I've been with the post
- 1:11:54office they've called off Livery two times and they were more
- 1:11:57recently than in more recent years than in, you know, in the
- 1:12:02past. So yeah, unfortunately, when
- 1:12:04they called off in my office, I was already a regular and so I
- 1:12:07got my evaluated pay. So what?
- 1:12:09All right. It doesn't.
- 1:12:11It does not define a friend through 8 does not.
- 1:12:14All right. It doesn't the school.
- 1:12:16Yes, thank you. It does not distinguish what
- 1:12:18between a regular or an RCA. It just says X of God, when X of
- 1:12:24God prevent. Employee an employee, from
- 1:12:28performing the employees Duty. The employer May authorize
- 1:12:33administrative leave EMA will be paid for each service day.
- 1:12:38A rural carrier reports to the post office and is scheduled to
- 1:12:42perform delivery if the carrier fails to serve all, or any
- 1:12:46portion of the route due to lack of proper Endeavor or any
- 1:12:50failure, which the carrier is responsible appropriate
- 1:12:53deductions from salary. EMA will be made will be based
- 1:12:57on Miles omitted. So, it just says, employee talk
- 1:13:02with your local union, representative for guidance.
- 1:13:06Yes, exactly. Yes, I do for entertainment
- 1:13:09purposes only, I would not, you know, I can't, I've never seen
- 1:13:17or one way or another with that. But I don't, if they Authorize
- 1:13:26the administrative leave. I don't think I necessarily.
- 1:13:29We're going to include the RCA's that may that they will most
- 1:13:32likely have to work with their local union representative,
- 1:13:36right? So here's another good one that
- 1:13:38comes in Subs. Doing multiple routes including
- 1:13:41running packages for City carriers.
- 1:13:43Basically parcel assistance you fill out a green card just for
- 1:13:46your time or she write down the road.
- 1:13:47She was just with this is going to do management is going to
- 1:13:52that's their own thing whether they want to separate green card
- 1:13:54for each route. Or I know in my office on one
- 1:13:57green card, but I have to separate each route by the
- 1:14:00little sections, start, and end time.
- 1:14:03But yeah, you would go with the each of the individual route.
- 1:14:06That would be up to Management's discussion on whether they
- 1:14:09wanted. All our one green card or suffer
- 1:14:11green card for every rep. You.
- 1:14:14Okay? I've always been taught used one
- 1:14:17green card and say you fill it up front and back and then you
- 1:14:20switch regardless of wrap my route or but like we said each
- 1:14:25Yelp is going to be done differently.
- 1:14:32I would just break parcel, run started at nine am finished at 2
- 1:14:36p.m. and how many miles are office.
- 1:14:39Prefers it to be each day at your clock in clock out.
- 1:14:42And if you have a lunch break in there, you put that in the other
- 1:14:45two slots in each section for the green card and then you
- 1:14:49write down what you did in the notes.
- 1:14:52Mine would prefer. That each section are at least
- 1:14:55Note side your time in and time out for each route that you
- 1:14:58assisted. Yeah, even even when I go in and
- 1:15:01case routes on a holiday, a wanted me to divide it that my
- 1:15:06time up by, which routes I did that way, they could charge the
- 1:15:10financial charge till that route, right?
- 1:15:12Just putting it in as a as 99999 1998 or whatever.
- 1:15:17The hell they want to do today is and this applies to arcs to
- 1:15:21Mark, the do parcel assistance during mail delivery week.
- 1:15:25It applies to them, two arcs are for our, for parcel delivery.
- 1:15:29They're not for mail delivery. If an arch being used for mail
- 1:15:32delivery, they should be where the exception, the exception of
- 1:15:38Saturday's, if they've gone through the RCA Academy Academy,
- 1:15:43yep. Now, anybody started to talk
- 1:15:45about training newbies, but we can say that for a totally
- 1:15:48different episode. Well, we got into the I was late
- 1:15:54jumping into Conversation beginning due to being on the
- 1:15:58phone with my father and brother, who were assisting me
- 1:16:00in answering the questions for the facilitator application,
- 1:16:04that I need to fill out a paper. This evening, I just try and
- 1:16:08write my injury so I can apply for the Royal Academy because
- 1:16:12her Academy and orientation facilitators that what you're
- 1:16:16doing, okay, that's what I'm hoping to do.
- 1:16:20I actually have a supervisor that will sign off on a
- 1:16:25reference Camry. So she hasn't been here long
- 1:16:28enough to get to know me. Another question we have is can
- 1:16:32RCA's do anything with the Union?
- 1:16:35Yes, RCA's can do. Absolutely.
- 1:16:38Absolutely. I am prime example of that.
- 1:16:42As an RCA. I am an o.j.
- 1:16:45I I am a mapping facilitator. I have been a county unit
- 1:16:50Treasurer currently a county unit eyes.
- 1:16:55President, I know of RCA's. I have been area stewards, and
- 1:17:00adrs. I have ran for national office
- 1:17:04as an RCA, you can be a delegate to your State Convention to
- 1:17:09National Convention. You can go to all your local
- 1:17:14meetings, all your state boosters and you're still
- 1:17:17protected under that. Nifty little article in the
- 1:17:19contract. I blew believe it's number 24.
- 1:17:23Yeah, there's an RCA. Yes, you can be.
- 1:17:25Extremely active is as much as you want.
- 1:17:27In fact, I am off this tomorrow and Tuesday.
- 1:17:32I'm actually broadcast. I am actually recording tonight
- 1:17:35from hotel. Is my state board.
- 1:17:38Meetings are open to membership to observe and I observing my
- 1:17:42state board meeting the next two days.
- 1:17:45Give them hell. I am observing.
- 1:17:47I can't I'm not participating. I am there observing.
- 1:17:51Fuck. You can always do a point of
- 1:17:53order. You can ask Under point of order
- 1:17:57that is it is possible or they can if they're looking for input
- 1:18:00on sums, you know, they will ask us for input.
- 1:18:03So yes, it is very possible to be extremely active in the Union
- 1:18:09in our can also be involved in the Union as well.
- 1:18:12You can go to County meeting, you can go to state meetings,
- 1:18:15become a delegate as well. You also can have a voice in
- 1:18:18this whole thing. There's no designation between
- 1:18:21an arc and RCA or rural carrier in the world.
- 1:18:25Girl Union. All right.
- 1:18:26Here's another. Yes.
- 1:18:27What a quick follow-up, Kristin. Do you get any grief or at least
- 1:18:32a written initially? I don't know how long you've had
- 1:18:35your current postmaster, but do you get any pushback for for I
- 1:18:40did at first, when I came into this office because I started
- 1:18:44another office, it was actually my regular that trained me and
- 1:18:48my first office actually, I'm rooming with her, it State
- 1:18:51Convention, this year. She actually is the one that It
- 1:18:55was her husband that took me to my first local meeting because
- 1:18:58her husband was a carrier at the time to is the one that
- 1:19:01nominated me to be Treasurer at the time and got it.
- 1:19:03Held it for four years, she's the one that dragged me off
- 1:19:06because that was back in the good old days.
- 1:19:09When there was a full complement of stubs in an office.
- 1:19:13And she actually do, you know, took me to my first conventions.
- 1:19:18She worked for me to go to my first booster.
- 1:19:20I went with another carrier, you know.
- 1:19:24Oh, I I was so used to having that relationship and being able
- 1:19:28to do that stuff in that office being involved when I came into
- 1:19:33the office that I'm in. Now, a word not used to anybody
- 1:19:38being active at all in that office.
- 1:19:40In fact, I remember my first postmaster in this office, I was
- 1:19:46on my way and I had my approved leave slip because you have to,
- 1:19:49to go to your annual enhancement training that you're required to
- 1:19:53do. I was actually getting onto the
- 1:19:55Whales already up an hour away from home and she calls me
- 1:19:58telling me it will I need you to come in and Route Runner out
- 1:20:01five. I said that's impossible today.
- 1:20:04I said I am on my way to my training than I am man.
- 1:20:08Dated a go-to so you're telling me you're not coming in.
- 1:20:11No I haven't approved slip for that.
- 1:20:13I am not coming and well I'm going to write that down.
- 1:20:16All right ahead. I mean I got there and I let the
- 1:20:19Dr. Know we just kind of laughed it off but yeah, I did have
- 1:20:23quite a bit of pushback at First, as an RCA.
- 1:20:26Because in the past, the RCs that were, there were always
- 1:20:30told that was before RCA's earned, leave to that.
- 1:20:34You're an RCA. You're not allowed to request
- 1:20:37any time off for anything. You can't have a life.
- 1:20:40I mean, that was the big push in the office at the time.
- 1:20:43And then when I came in, I had already been doing Union work
- 1:20:47for three and a half years and now all of a sudden I'm in.
- 1:20:51And I'm taking I'm putting request in for conventions and
- 1:20:54everything I was bringing Going up that article quite a bit and
- 1:20:57it's got to the point now that as long as you know I put it in,
- 1:21:01they don't even hesitate anymore.
- 1:21:03They just give it to me off. Yeah, I did have a lot of
- 1:21:05pushback at first you don't push bag even if you're a regular
- 1:21:08carrier to yep. Oh, why?
- 1:21:11Whenever I submit my I leave request for Union stuff.
- 1:21:15I always attach a copy of article 24 of which I have
- 1:21:20multiple copies somewhere and it's just going to be worse
- 1:21:23until they figure out a way to get us at least 90% staff.
- 1:21:27It's going to be a problem until we get paid back up.
- 1:21:30What kind of it's going to be a problem until management learns
- 1:21:34to treat RCA's like human beings?
- 1:21:36Yep. Yeah.
- 1:21:37Hey, hey. And treatment are the two
- 1:21:38biggest things, you know, it definitely is.
- 1:21:42I mean, I I've worked for absolutely wonderful management.
- 1:21:45I have worked for not-so-great management right now.
- 1:21:47I'm kind of in between but it's hearing the horror stories come
- 1:21:52out of other offices. RCA's number one, the times that
- 1:21:55we are in now with RCA's and people just wanting to work in
- 1:21:59general and not just work doing hard work, this is not.
- 1:22:02We don't just drive around the truck stops and mail all day.
- 1:22:05That's the easy part of the job. It's, you know, this could be a
- 1:22:08big mental challenge to and a lot of people don't get that.
- 1:22:11It can be a physical challenge which Some may have an issue
- 1:22:14with its, you know, this job isn't for everybody, but to find
- 1:22:18an art, you know, to find people nowadays that especially with
- 1:22:22went on a few years ago and people get an all comfortable
- 1:22:25with working at home or a living off the government or not
- 1:22:29working at all. And then why you to come in and
- 1:22:32then going to push comes to shove, and okay, I actually have
- 1:22:35to work, but then when you have management that treats them less
- 1:22:39than human and Belize. Exactly.
- 1:22:42And there's a Absolutely no positive reinforcement in some
- 1:22:46of these offices and they run you ragged and they just it gets
- 1:22:50to a point one you know somebody you can only take so much
- 1:22:53anybody can only take so much. So unless you have somebody
- 1:22:58that's looking out for you to stand up for you or stand up for
- 1:23:00yourself, I mean, the easy job is just to leave when you hear
- 1:23:03the horror stories and people are seeing the horror stories,
- 1:23:05people are hearing the horror stories, people are seeing the
- 1:23:07news reports. You're getting this, you know,
- 1:23:10people talk to carriers, you know, less and less people are.
- 1:23:13Don't want to come to this job. I remember when this job was
- 1:23:16extremely coveted job. You know, there was weightless
- 1:23:19to get into the post office RCA's.
- 1:23:22Waited 20 years to go full-time. Yeah, they'll do some still.
- 1:23:27Yeah, depending on the area around you still do.
- 1:23:29I mean, I very Gotti and a half years under my belt and some
- 1:23:32that wasn't you know like wow, that was less than me, you know,
- 1:23:36it's nobody wants to stay with a job that long, especially one
- 1:23:40that's feast, or famine new are either working.
- 1:23:43During one day a week or you're working seven days a week and
- 1:23:45you don't know it. Varies from week to week, you're
- 1:23:47wanting one route a day or you're running around a half or
- 1:23:50two routes a day. It's one of those unpredictable
- 1:23:52jobs and I totally get that. But when you add the fact on of
- 1:23:56incompetent management and management that don't know how
- 1:23:59to treat people with respect and want to be a little and berate
- 1:24:04and stomp on you, you don't want to work for them and it's and
- 1:24:08I'm and I don't want to say this in a bad way.
- 1:24:12There are a Of regular carriers out there that treats, the subs
- 1:24:18assigned to their route, like their their personal employee
- 1:24:22and they think they can just scare you or or they just are
- 1:24:27there completely wrapped up in their own agenda and they don't
- 1:24:31think about that person. That's something on their route,
- 1:24:33they don't communicate with them.
- 1:24:35I mean, that's, I mean, that's the hardest thing is like, when
- 1:24:39I first started, I had a regular who communicated everything we
- 1:24:43had Add a notebook. So we left notes for each other
- 1:24:46and anything important anything like that and so we were always
- 1:24:50in the know. Are she called me or I call her
- 1:24:53you know and then you work and then you work on routes where
- 1:24:56the regular leaves? There's no communication
- 1:24:59whatsoever and it's like, all right here that says you get the
- 1:25:02carrier that says I was treated this way.
- 1:25:04So I'm going to treat you that way.
- 1:25:05Exactly. And to me, that's not right.
- 1:25:08I mean, I've already talked to one of our the sub that's on the
- 1:25:11route that I'm taking, but I will pay Eventually be taking
- 1:25:14over here in a few months and you know, he's like, wow, he's
- 1:25:17like I really, you know, he doesn't mind the work, he really
- 1:25:20doesn't, he likes the job. But he's like where you know, I
- 1:25:23want to be able to seize, you know, go to some of my kids, you
- 1:25:26know, soccer and baseball games and see my son grow up, and I
- 1:25:31can feel that and relate to that because I started this job as a
- 1:25:35single parent. You know, my kids were all three
- 1:25:37of my kids were in school or just starting school.
- 1:25:41When I started this job you know, my son's Roan and on his
- 1:25:44own. Now, my daughter is going to be
- 1:25:45a senior next year, if she passes summer school and my
- 1:25:47other ones just going into middle school and I missed its
- 1:25:51hon with them growing up because of this job.
- 1:25:54But at the same time, you know, I get that.
- 1:25:57But I like I told him I said to him I said, you know, I'm going
- 1:26:01to be the low man on the totem pole.
- 1:26:03I don't expect to get Saturday's off because I'm going to be the
- 1:26:07lone man of the totem pole. So, happy where I said, but if
- 1:26:09there's a time or if there's a day that you need off, because
- 1:26:13You want to go to your son's game where you got this going
- 1:26:15on. I said, just let me know ahead
- 1:26:17of time I said I don't have a problem with that, you know, you
- 1:26:20got to, you got to communicate, you know, in Subs RCA's.
- 1:26:24Need to communicate with the regulars.
- 1:26:26To I've seen a lot of RCA's that want to come in and they're just
- 1:26:30going to come into my job, go home and they do absolutely
- 1:26:32nothing. They don't help keep up with
- 1:26:34like with hole cards and pars labels.
- 1:26:36Even if a regular says, you know, I have one regular my
- 1:26:39office as if you get one she's off.
- 1:26:41She said put my Powers labels on here.
- 1:26:43Don't put them on the cards because I need to physically.
- 1:26:45See them myself in order for it. I said, yeah, that's no problem.
- 1:26:48But you know what? When I get those Parcels, I'm
- 1:26:50still looking at them so I know. Hey, am I forwarding somebody's
- 1:26:54mail today? You know, I know her system on
- 1:26:55hold. So I go ahead and I put her
- 1:26:57holds up the normal way and I pull him, you know, before I
- 1:27:01leave if she's coming back the next day I usually try and pull
- 1:27:03those returning holes for it's like and it's like I said in the
- 1:27:07past before as an RCA and it doesn't matter what route you're
- 1:27:10walking in to take ownership of that route.
- 1:27:14And try to leave. Even if it's just a sticky note
- 1:27:16or a blank piece of paper with some notes of like hey I noticed
- 1:27:20this or there's a new box up now at this address or something you
- 1:27:25know communication I think is number one, especially between
- 1:27:28the assignment RCA and the regular on that route there has
- 1:27:31to be some sort of positive communication even if it's just
- 1:27:37about what's going on on that route.
- 1:27:39Yeah. That's some marking cases and
- 1:27:41creating cheat sheets. You know how?
- 1:27:43Up them where if, when it's at all possible, man.
- 1:27:46I'm still helping the other two. I still have the one that's kind
- 1:27:49of struggling with a few addresses on the case.
- 1:27:52And you know, every day he I mean, even yesterday I had a
- 1:27:55case up, the 45k that I was running, I had a case up, my 40K
- 1:28:00that I was splitting and I had a case up, my Ox route and get
- 1:28:04that ready to go for the regular carrier that took it for me.
- 1:28:06Thankfully. And then I had to take my
- 1:28:09primary route and I had to split that up.
- 1:28:11I didn't mark any packages for my half.
- 1:28:13Because, well, I don't have to knowing that I had somebody
- 1:28:16brand-new that had never ran, that router doesn't even know
- 1:28:19that area at all, because they're new to our area, in
- 1:28:21general. I had to go through with the
- 1:28:23parcel markers and write the address is on there and put
- 1:28:26everything in order and I pulled it all down.
- 1:28:28Then I had to go back to the 45k and Mark those packages and pull
- 1:28:33that down and load it up, I still took that time while he
- 1:28:36was trying to get out on his 41k route.
- 1:28:39And he's like, I can't find these addresses on the case and
- 1:28:42it's those oddball. Oh ones where you have one box
- 1:28:44here, turn around one back. And so you know, I still took
- 1:28:48that time to stop and say, okay it's like I'm having a hard time
- 1:28:52finding these and he'd show me the address and of course, you
- 1:28:54know, I hadn't slept in over 24 hours at this point.
- 1:28:58So the numbers aren't clicking with me but I look at the name
- 1:29:00I'm like oh so and so I said yep, upper right hand corner,
- 1:29:04third row and I was pointed out to him rather than just doing it
- 1:29:07for him. That way he can get that visual
- 1:29:11you know, be that mentor. That RCA even if you are, if you
- 1:29:15are an RCA, you've been around for a while, you know the routes
- 1:29:19now, you can still take that time to help those newer
- 1:29:23struggling RCA's. There has to be some sort of
- 1:29:27camaraderie within the office in order to make it work into it,
- 1:29:33for it to be positive. And then that's also regular
- 1:29:35carriers to take care of the RCA's because the RCA's are
- 1:29:39going to get crapped on a lot. And it's our job to help lift
- 1:29:43them up. I'm up, it's our job to help
- 1:29:44them with the job. It's our job to teach them the
- 1:29:46right way to do things our job to help.
- 1:29:49Make sure that Management's treating them by the contract.
- 1:29:53We have to look out for each other whether we're an RCA and
- 1:29:56Arc a PDF or a regular carrier. We have to look out for each
- 1:30:01other, take care of each other because we're all we got we are
- 1:30:05our Union every one of us do spaying and then dues-paying, we
- 1:30:09have to take care of each other. We do.
- 1:30:11And I think taking care of our Is is number one at this point,
- 1:30:15especially as a regular. And if you want some time off,
- 1:30:19you need to take care of that RCA as an RCA who only gets time
- 1:30:25off for Union functions and very rarely anything personal please
- 1:30:30take care of that RCA because I am really glad I already had
- 1:30:35this time pre-approved because I needed to get away.
- 1:30:41Well, we all need to get away from This job every once in a
- 1:30:44while, but I'm here, but I'm here for Union stuff.
- 1:30:47So, it's, you know, how you're technically still working?
- 1:30:50Just well, yeah, not at the off. Exactly.
- 1:30:54I'm actually away from the office more this week than I'm
- 1:30:56actually there. I work Saturday and we'll wave
- 1:30:59Monday Tuesday, I'll be there, Wednesday, I'm away.
- 1:31:01Thursday, for my annual training and I am back on Friday.
- 1:31:07And then the end of the month, you have their day, in the end
- 1:31:10of the month, the other State Convention, And I'm all for the
- 1:31:14whole week. Two months later.
- 1:31:16You have the National Convention?
- 1:31:17Yep. But I do have personal weekend
- 1:31:19off in July so I will be far away and actually I will not be
- 1:31:24on that Sunday because I'll slip knot will be performing.
- 1:31:27I'm not going to be here according to the concert.
- 1:31:30So three day weekend honestly, I don't know how many RCA's we
- 1:31:34lost dude. Who wrecks releasing those
- 1:31:38numbers? No, even though routes a Decay
- 1:31:42from case, two h's. Has H routes are still entitled
- 1:31:45to a leave replacement for. Yes.
- 1:31:50And doesn't need as well. Yeah, she is holding down.
- 1:31:54Are allowed to have really scarier.
- 1:31:57Yes. And an ox route can have a
- 1:31:58relief carrier? Yes, every row is entitled to a
- 1:32:02relief carrier. Yeah, I would say speaking of
- 1:32:04such things or see a holding down around is entitled to a
- 1:32:08relief J, but not necessarily the same relief.
- 1:32:11They posted. With the regular correct.
- 1:32:15Usually I do believe. I think I have seen it at one
- 1:32:18time. It says on the lightest day of
- 1:32:20the week but that doesn't necessarily always happen.
- 1:32:23Well it's and I've heard actually at Management's
- 1:32:28discussion on giving that bleep back to the auction yet.
- 1:32:32Everything's you may work through some stages from our
- 1:32:34help, you're going pushing email or higher.
- 1:32:38Most of the time they're probably going to be the oh
- 1:32:40really, if you can request that you get Agent a really good this
- 1:32:44week but no guarantee your promises with that especially
- 1:32:47depending on Staffing as well. Yes, so I have a question for
- 1:32:51you guys. So if you have an RCA that's
- 1:32:54borrowed from another office, obviously was not trained
- 1:32:59properly in that office when it comes to Basics like olds and
- 1:33:04forwards like they thought pars labels were holds and that
- 1:33:08forwards would you how would you handle that?
- 1:33:12Because Not technically an employee of your office.
- 1:33:17Hi. If you stick some?
- 1:33:19Yeah, I would. Just if, if they question you
- 1:33:23on, hey, what do I do with this? You helped him out.
- 1:33:26Let him know. I hate mine.
- 1:33:30How many different my office is a different Beast than anywhere
- 1:33:35in the world? Yes.
- 1:33:37I've seen where they've called back an RCA from another station
- 1:33:42for an eye. II in my station, with my
- 1:33:46management team, do something make a doll.
- 1:33:48The one day they're brought into my my station.
- 1:33:51So if that's the case, then you would represent them because the
- 1:33:55potential disciplines coming from your pelvis?
- 1:33:58Well I can do that for sure that something that, you know, I
- 1:34:03would definitely find out from your representatives on how that
- 1:34:07should be handled but, you know, and I agree on that one, you
- 1:34:13know. No suggestion is obviously take
- 1:34:14him under your wing and teach him to.
- 1:34:16I mean, which I tend to do that to a point.
- 1:34:20I may have an interesting situation on my hands because we
- 1:34:24do have a carrier that's out for an undetermined amount of time
- 1:34:28right now. And the borrowed, RCA only works
- 1:34:33in his office on Saturdays regulars KDAY, rest of the week.
- 1:34:40He is with us running that one route.
- 1:34:43Technically I don't I don't fight it right now.
- 1:34:46I don't fight it because I cover everything in the office but a
- 1:34:49couple of the routes that we do have the other RCA's on a
- 1:34:54technically. I do believe I would be entitled
- 1:34:57to those hours ahead of him. Even though I I am assigned an
- 1:35:00ox row. Well, as a double-edged sword
- 1:35:03there. Yes, it is.
- 1:35:06He clearly said, I don't make a huge deal about it at all
- 1:35:10because we're going to end up happening.
- 1:35:13You know, is this isn't yourself a record though, right?
- 1:35:17No, okay, so, because you're assigned to your and no 5 in 1,
- 1:35:23Ox for out. You only earn stick on your our
- 1:35:26Trail. So you're losing that If you
- 1:35:30work, the other route that other route with my Ox rope and that
- 1:35:34comes to a wesen 12-hour. Scheduled 45k is nine hours.
- 1:35:40Plus two point. Five, eight hours.
- 1:35:42Yes, I'm just under the 12-hour scheduled, okay?
- 1:35:45And I'm going to presume on a regular day or a typical day.
- 1:35:50I should say, you're running it in less than that.
- 1:35:52Maybe not by much, but you're running it in like, okay.
- 1:35:55So we don't have usually with that.
- 1:35:57I'm usually running it in less than nine hours.
- 1:35:59Yes. Well, I'm saying that you can
- 1:36:02bind if you're doing it to combine it's going to be less
- 1:36:05than as well. Oh yeah.
- 1:36:08That that's that's a catch-22 because as a senior RCA, yes,
- 1:36:14you could get those hours, but you're assigned to the oxygen,
- 1:36:17which means you're already scheduled.
- 1:36:19All right? You understand what I'm saying?
- 1:36:22You know, yes, you're the senior RCA.
- 1:36:29You should be. Able to catch those hours, you
- 1:36:34know, that you know, take that route if no one else has it on
- 1:36:38their Matrix and currently doing on the, you know, on the flip
- 1:36:42side of that coin is your assigned me and supposed to be
- 1:36:46scheduled on the ox route. I don't, I'm not sure where
- 1:36:50exactly it is, but I know for sure, your name can show up on
- 1:36:56742 40s for the week. Yes, I can, which sometimes it
- 1:37:01does. Host which is supposed to be
- 1:37:04your Ox Route, 6 days and your regular primary on that sixth
- 1:37:09day. We should use as a five and one
- 1:37:12it could be five days on the ox row and then have one of the
- 1:37:16other RCA's take it if I'm running my primary button.
- 1:37:20Yes. But in general, I'm entitled to
- 1:37:25your regular and irregular is off.
- 1:37:31They should Sliding through your regular route and getting
- 1:37:35technically getting coverage, for the ox.
- 1:37:37And this is where the issue came in yesterday.
- 1:37:41The fact that I was scheduled to run route for and my Ox route,
- 1:37:46which is no big deal Thunder. The 12 hours and my primary is
- 1:37:52the one that could not make it in due to the medical issue,
- 1:37:56right? Which was a call, well, which is
- 1:37:59actually has a day to yourself. Technically, I'm already
- 1:38:03scheduled so that technically pulls you out of the running
- 1:38:07there. However, management can say,
- 1:38:10we're going to switch it to your primary, you know, to your
- 1:38:13shovel record and put the Newport, you know, the other
- 1:38:17person on this other route, which was not possible because
- 1:38:20they were all both still, they were both working their ass
- 1:38:23right out. Now, here's the issue.
- 1:38:26Now, in that circumstance, you would think that they would try
- 1:38:29to get a hold of one of the regulars.
- 1:38:32They're off to see if they would come in.
- 1:38:35Am I right? That is that, that is a
- 1:38:40possibility, that they could have an Avenue.
- 1:38:42They could have tried, whatever. I'm not sure where my phone.
- 1:38:47No. But unless you, unless you're
- 1:38:50under my poom who says, you need to contact him first, you get
- 1:38:56permission before you can call a regular.
- 1:38:59And I would be inquiring about out that directive through your
- 1:39:04District representative or assistant this program, just to
- 1:39:09see if that is something. That is because the order
- 1:39:14consideration says RCA's in your office, you know, leave
- 1:39:19Replacements in your office, then they have any society
- 1:39:23around. They have the opt.
- 1:39:25At that point, they have been the key word is option to bring
- 1:39:28someone in nobody available. They actually It is really if
- 1:39:34they were closed, they were Quest neither one of them are
- 1:39:36already mandated by Q naught but if it's already if you're
- 1:39:42already into the day, you know it's already the day of your
- 1:39:47hands are tied on. You can't take, you know, say
- 1:39:50anything to the regular if they don't even answer the phone it's
- 1:39:54are scheduled day off and like, I finally got my management team
- 1:39:59taught that. If you don't tell me.
- 1:40:02Me the day before, consider my phone turned off until the next
- 1:40:05time on schedule. So yeah.
- 1:40:06So that's that's what I found out yesterday.
- 1:40:10Is people under this particular, poem management needs to contact
- 1:40:15him, you get permission prior to attempting to call in a regular
- 1:40:20on the relief so that left, that was a nice guy and I took just
- 1:40:25calling them in or In, because if they're on the relief, they
- 1:40:35were Cliffs. They're already getting
- 1:40:36scheduled. I'll tell you that right now,
- 1:40:38okay? Hence, that's why my regular had
- 1:40:41to call out. Is he was already schedule
- 1:40:44because they had me covering the other row.
- 1:40:46Okay. Oh yeah.
- 1:40:48Yesterday was a clusterfuck. It's the sound that sounds like
- 1:40:51someone wanting to micromanage. It's exactly.
- 1:40:54That is 100% exactly the boom that I have soccer.
- 1:40:59So yeah, it's great. That talker it's it's been a
- 1:41:03week for me. I will tell you that on the
- 1:41:07positive note because I want to try and wrap this up because
- 1:41:09it's getting kind of late and I do appreciate Clyde joining us
- 1:41:12tonight. I'm sorry I missed 95% of it, I
- 1:41:15will go back and listen to it and we can talk later.
- 1:41:17I will say though, I got all the instruments stuff taken care of
- 1:41:20with my car. For those that are listening to
- 1:41:22my little Saga, with my car, getting totaled out, I actually
- 1:41:26have gotten my portion of the settlement back which is enough
- 1:41:29to put a down payment on another one and And here's a shout out
- 1:41:33to Atlanta, Postal Credit Union everybody.
- 1:41:36If you haven't checked them out and you're looking for a credit
- 1:41:38union, please go check them out, they are fabulous.
- 1:41:44I call them as soon as I got phone with the insurance company
- 1:41:46to let the when they told me that they had her sending the
- 1:41:50check out to pay off the lien on my car, I called them up, they
- 1:41:56looked it up. They said yep we have that
- 1:41:57noted. I said do I have to wait till
- 1:41:59that payments received before? Lying for a new loan.
- 1:42:03She's like, no, we can't do that right now and they approved me
- 1:42:06for my loan. The next day, I got the
- 1:42:08confirmation and they approved me for the amount that I want.
- 1:42:12So I am hopefully by the beginning of next week.
- 1:42:15We'll be driving my new car. Nice.
- 1:42:18So I think we've been at it for almost two hours now.
- 1:42:20Yeah, it's almost 10:00. Yeah, it was nice to.
- 1:42:29Come on here and get out of here for a little bit.
- 1:42:31Around a little bit later since I got on here.
- 1:42:33Yeah, and thank you guys for a hold of it down.
- 1:42:37Why? I was out having dinner with
- 1:42:40some other members of the Union here, in the great state of
- 1:42:44Michigan. Where you'll have to tell me all
- 1:42:46about it later, I will. Yes, it was too, it was a good
- 1:42:49time. Food will start off with Clyde.
- 1:42:53You have any final thoughts for our listeners out there?
- 1:42:55RCA's. Well, first of all, thanks for
- 1:42:59having me. If you were to have me for that.
- 1:43:01Back, if you want to have me back for whatever reason, I want
- 1:43:05you to know that my weird sense of humor will grow on you, but
- 1:43:10the for RCA's out there, please don't take any shit.
- 1:43:13Alright, your regular doesn't own you a Local Union steward
- 1:43:17may or may not know what they're talking about.
- 1:43:19Don't be afraid to go up the chain of command, even if that
- 1:43:23means your Dr. If you need contact information for your Dr.
- 1:43:27You can find it pretty easily, either Union website, or go on
- 1:43:31Facebook. Booking ask somebody you are,
- 1:43:34you are human and don't let them push you around.
- 1:43:37Because if you do, then that just spreads and affects the
- 1:43:40rest of us. So, put up a fight, that's it.
- 1:43:43Absolutely, first of all, Clyde, thanks for coming and I'm not
- 1:43:49going to speak for anyone else, but I'm sure they agree.
- 1:43:53You are welcome back, anytime. I would say, if need be, you
- 1:43:58have the option. Also, if you're not getting I
- 1:44:02wouldn't feel is the whole complete.
- 1:44:05Correct. Answer from your Dr. You have
- 1:44:08the right to contact your National representative for the
- 1:44:12different realm and they have. Each member is a different
- 1:44:18region of the country, the country, which you can look that
- 1:44:22up to see who's covering your area, the hard part is finally
- 1:44:27over. Unfortunately we won't go for
- 1:44:29who knows how long I'll be. Process will play out.
- 1:44:34Hopefully everyone that did have disputes, it'll be favorable for
- 1:44:39them. Try and have a good week if you
- 1:44:42get overwhelmed, try not to get overwhelmed.
- 1:44:44If you do take a step back, take a deep breath.
- 1:44:47Step back in have a great golf. James, your turn.
- 1:44:52Well I'm gonna also agree with what Josh said.
- 1:44:56The biggest thing is to know who your contact information is all
- 1:45:01the way up. The chain is their biggest point
- 1:45:03of contact, is your local assignment designate doing
- 1:45:06representative. Whether it be in the office or
- 1:45:09your area Steward, you could have your assistant District
- 1:45:12reps or your District reps. If you're part of the Union,
- 1:45:17you'll get to get them in your state magazines that you get
- 1:45:21from them. If not you can go on the inner
- 1:45:24LCA website, look that up and you don't have to be a member to
- 1:45:27look that up either. And if not you can also talk
- 1:45:30with the national board. Lord, if you're just like Josh
- 1:45:33said, it's the contact information is on the inner LCA
- 1:45:37website and it's accessible to everybody, not just dues paying
- 1:45:41members. So remember we're all in this
- 1:45:43together. We got to take care of each
- 1:45:45other. Our RCA's are the biggest part
- 1:45:49of the union membership that we have because the RCA's.
- 1:45:55Our next regular carriers And our regular carriers need to
- 1:45:59remember that. At one point, they were Subs to,
- 1:46:02and they should not treat their subs, in negative ways.
- 1:46:06We want to keep them around as much as possible.
- 1:46:09Not just for our scheduled days off.
- 1:46:12But because we're going to be retiring, we're going to be
- 1:46:15moving on to future endeavors in our life and our retirement, and
- 1:46:20they're going to be the one stepping up to take over your
- 1:46:22route. So take care of your RCA's,
- 1:46:25RCA's take care of your regular. Carriers, let's make this.
- 1:46:28The best years in the rural craft, we can possibly do Step
- 1:46:32Up, take care of things and learn your craft.
- 1:46:35Now, it's your turn Kristen. All right, again, I want to
- 1:46:38thank life for joining us. You are welcome back, anytime.
- 1:46:42Thank you to James and Josh for holding this down for me while I
- 1:46:47was out spending an evening with fellow union members and I was I
- 1:46:53just had something in a totally with escaped my mind.
- 1:46:57But no on that note, like I said it's, you know, watching out for
- 1:47:02each other regulars, please. I mean there's a difference
- 1:47:06between coddling and and helping and mentoring and cuddling only
- 1:47:11goes so far anyways, I'm not a cuddler but I am there to
- 1:47:17Mentor, I still check on my to our two other RCA's in my office
- 1:47:24on a regular basis. If there's anything I, you know,
- 1:47:27And that also comes from not only being the senior RCA but
- 1:47:31also the o.j. I, I try to check in and see
- 1:47:34where they're going. Yeah, RCA's really are the
- 1:47:37backbone. I don't know what my office
- 1:47:40would do. Right now, without me, the way
- 1:47:41things have been going to last couple weeks.
- 1:47:44I really, I mean, I literally it was all right, how are we going
- 1:47:48to cover these routes? And I just, I pulled the other
- 1:47:51two RCA's. And I said, I know, either one
- 1:47:54of you have ran either of these two routes At all.
- 1:47:57So I'm going to split the smaller one and I gave one of
- 1:48:02you, if not both of you to volunteer to help me please
- 1:48:04because I can't run a 40K and a 45km, my own So they did they
- 1:48:11came together, you know, it's you kind of have to be a team.
- 1:48:15If you're an office with more in just a handful of RCA's, you
- 1:48:19really kind of have to team up in the past.
- 1:48:22I mean, before I current regular my primary, when he was still on
- 1:48:26RCA and we had another RCA that had transferred out and it was
- 1:48:29the three of us. We were like the Three
- 1:48:31Musketeers, they always, we always went out on smoke breaks
- 1:48:34together. We were, I mean, the three of
- 1:48:37us, still talk even though one Not even in our office.
- 1:48:40You kind of have to build that camaraderie within the office as
- 1:48:45RCA's. And it definitely helps
- 1:48:48especially if you're covering a route that you may not know as
- 1:48:51well, but North another RCA does and vice versa.
- 1:48:55You can help each other out. Actually, when it comes to
- 1:48:58learning a new route or just coverage in general, if you have
- 1:49:02to get stuck splitting routes, try you don't have to like the
- 1:49:06person but you have to get along with them.
- 1:49:08That's That's my point advices. You may not have to like them
- 1:49:12but you kind of have to get along with them and try to keep
- 1:49:15the peace and work together. It is, you know, as much as it's
- 1:49:18an independent job out on the road.
- 1:49:21It's a team effort in the office.
- 1:49:24So on that note I'm going to wrap them and so we can all get
- 1:49:27off of here and enjoy the rest of our night.
- 1:49:30I want everybody to be safe. Mauro is Monday and be safe out
- 1:49:35there and take it in stride. So on that note, And we should
- 1:49:39be back next week and we'll talk to you then.
- 1:49:42And as bill says, make sure you make it home for your family.
- 1:49:44Yes, yes. Yes.
- 1:49:46Are the most important delivery.
