- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:10I am a dentist and this is my wife.
- 0:14Welcome to What's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:17The podcast where we talk about the goods, about the ugly and
- 0:20the absurd and all of our favorite.
- 0:22And least favorite? Scary movies.
- 0:23Because we believe every horror movie rightfully has its fan
- 0:26base. Even if we don't.
- 0:27Always get it? My name is Travis.
- 0:29My name is Jesse. And welcome, everybody, We are
- 0:33covering our Patreon voted episode this week.
- 0:36Indeed we are. And I guess the patrons decided
- 0:39that we are all due for a trip to the dentist because we're
- 0:43going to be covering the dentist today.
- 0:45Yeah, this is a nice little weird little movie and I'm
- 0:50excited to talk about it today. Yeah, I think it's, I think it's
- 0:53going to be a fun one to talk about because it I always forget
- 0:56how much movie there is to this movie.
- 0:59What does that even mean? Because in my head it ends after
- 1:04the scene with his wife. You know the scene.
- 1:09There's a couple of those. No like, but the like.
- 1:13Oh yeah. Oh, really?
- 1:14The scene, yeah, that's where I always like imagine it ends.
- 1:18No. And there's so much more after.
- 1:20That Yeah, man, this movie goes places.
- 1:21Yeah, it really does. Yeah, it's a we're in for a fun
- 1:24time today. Somehow, the second one's even
- 1:25more wild. Yeah, yeah, that 1 is really
- 1:28weird and we'll hopefully talk about that one sometime down the
- 1:31line. But before we do anything else
- 1:34today, do you have anything that you need to announce?
- 1:38This weekend is gonna be our two Beer Not to Be episode.
- 1:40Of the movie. Okay, yeah.
- 1:42So just be a lookout for that and, and that's all I have by
- 1:46the way, of announcements. All right, so that means it's
- 1:48time for our poll results indeed.
- 1:50And we talked about old last week and that one was a tough
- 1:55one to do a poll for. So we ended up landing on what
- 1:58type of kid were you? Were you an adlib, which is
- 2:02chill? Or were you a Trent, which is a
- 2:05kid that had no chill? So over on Instagram 25% were
- 2:11adlib, 75% were Trents and over on Twitter 67 edlib, 33 Trent.
- 2:20So our chill people are over on Twitter and our no chill people
- 2:23are on Instagram. Sounds I would have reversed
- 2:25that. Actually, I think Twitter has no
- 2:28chill. But you know, whatever.
- 2:30I don't know. I I think I was an edlib.
- 2:35OK, yeah, I wasn't a wild kid. I didn't do like any out there
- 2:39shit. I was too scared.
- 2:42I was scared, chilled. Scared to chill?
- 2:46Yeah, what about you? Which one were you?
- 2:49Have you ever known me to have any chill whatsoever?
- 2:51Well, I've only known you for your adult life, so.
- 2:55Still. You've OK?
- 2:59Yeah. You did the whole spider web
- 3:01thing when you were like it. So yeah, you had no chill.
- 3:03OK. You're a trend.
- 3:04Yeah, unfortunately. OK, I probably did.
- 3:07I probably was the annoying kid on vacation.
- 3:10Like what's your name and occupation?
- 3:12Oh God. OK, sorry, those are purple.
- 3:15So let's talk about The Dentist. Are we ready?
- 3:18Yeah. OK, so The Dentist released June
- 3:2218th 1996 at the Fanta Festival. Like Fanta soda?
- 3:31No are. You sure?
- 3:33I'm not sure. That wasn't a confidence.
- 3:35No, I it's either if it's going to be anything, it's one
- 3:40fantastic 2 fantasy, 3 Fanta the drink or 4 whatever you said
- 3:48that's. What I said.
- 3:51Fanta like. The drink soda.
- 3:54Oh, I thought you were talking about a place.
- 3:55OK, no more than I don't know that could be, but I can't say
- 3:58no definitively. It's wide release was October
- 4:0118th, 1996 on HBO. HBO.
- 4:05And it released on VHS December 31st, 1996.
- 4:09So the very last day you got. A lot of numbers for that.
- 4:12Yeah, I was actually kind of surprised.
- 4:14I think that's the first time we've had three releases for a
- 4:17movie. I know we watched it on our
- 4:19Blu-ray which that just made it to Blu-ray last year, 2023,
- 4:25which is the release that we have.
- 4:26We scored it like so unexpectedly at Half Price
- 4:30Books. It was just sitting there, was
- 4:31on like the employee or staff pick shelf.
- 4:34Yeah. And you were like.
- 4:36Yeah. And just like, grabbed it.
- 4:38Just for anybody curious about these, they are super
- 4:42affordable. It's a 2 pack of the dentist,
- 4:44one and two and it's like $10 and you can get it on Amazon for
- 4:48probably 8 really. The woman that checked us out,
- 4:51she was like, this is a scary movie.
- 4:53And we were like, yeah, have you seen it?
- 4:54And she goes, no, I just hate the dentist.
- 4:56Yeah, yeah. That's kind of everybody's
- 4:58impression when they see this movie.
- 5:01So as of September 7th, 2024, you can watch it on AMC Plus
- 5:08Voodoo Free, which is now Fandango at Home Free Tubi and
- 5:13Plex. But if you have to watch it
- 5:16without ads on any of those free options, you can rent it on
- 5:19Apple, YouTube or Amazon for 399.
- 5:23Written by Dennis Paoli, Stuart Gordon and Charles Finch.
- 5:28I thought you said it was written by Dentist Faioli for a
- 5:31second. Directed by Brian Yesna.
- 5:34Yay. Music by Alan Howarth.
- 5:37That name sounds. Familiar the man who has done
- 5:39the soundtrack for a lot of John Carpenter films and Halloween's
- 5:43235. He did They Live, which was the
- 5:46most recent time we've discussed and which was last month.
- 5:50Bom bom bom BOM BOM BOM bom bom. Yep, that's the They Lift Them
- 5:52song. Yep.
- 5:53Well, you said Halloween 235 and you I feel like you kind of
- 5:57speed through that. So I wouldn't have a chance to
- 5:59do the Bom, BOM BOM, BOM. Special Effects by Anthony C
- 6:02Ferrante and JM Logan, starring Corbin Brinson as Doctor Alan
- 6:08Finestone, Linda Hoffman as Brooke, Molly Hagen as Jessica,
- 6:12Patty Toy as Karen, Jane Hong, Jane Hog, Jane Hog as Candy,
- 6:17Virginia Keen as Sarah, Michael Stadvek as Matt, and Ken Foray
- 6:22as Detective Gibbs. Yeah.
- 6:25All right. Time for our favorite game on
- 6:26the show. Budget or butt head?
- 6:32Yeah, I'm gonna go with bug Ted. Yeah, this is a very bug Ted
- 6:36movie. OK, the bug Ted for this was
- 6:38$700,000. Wowie.
- 6:41I don't have box office or worldwide gross because this is
- 6:44a straight to VHS release so nothing there.
- 6:47But the IMDb is 5.4 out of 10. That's pretty rude.
- 6:52I thought so, too. I don't really know where most
- 6:57people stand with this movie. I'm.
- 6:59I'm getting mixed reviews. I think that that kind of falls
- 7:02in line with an actual reception.
- 7:04Wow. Yeah.
- 7:05OK. Well, I guess that makes sense
- 7:07considering, you know, that is like a group of people rating
- 7:09it, but. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:12All right, so I have 3 movies from 1996 and the theme that I
- 7:17chose is professions you should be wary of.
- 7:21OK. Yeah.
- 7:22So that's. A fun theme.
- 7:24The first movie, This is not a profession just to be queer, but
- 7:29it's Pinocchio's revenge. You cannot be a professional
- 7:33Pinocchio. Be a professional liar.
- 7:36A what? Liar.
- 7:39I thought you almost said the actual thing because a lawyer is
- 7:42the profession of this movie. Well, I was gonna if you were
- 7:45gonna ask me for an example of professional liars, lawyer would
- 7:48have been up there. Yeah, I read the synopsis of
- 7:50this. We've never seen it.
- 7:51I'm really interested in it cuz it seems really cheesy and low
- 7:54budget. I was.
- 7:54Gonna say it sounds like something up our alley.
- 7:56It's is about so wait mentioned. 1st I have to ask.
- 8:02I'm guessing it's low budget. Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:06And it's about a killer doll. Is this a full moon?
- 8:12Features. No, I don't think so.
- 8:13OK, Remember Full Moon was rolling with the puppet masters
- 8:16at this time? They didn't.
- 8:17They had no need for Pinocchio. OK, I was just asking.
- 8:19Yeah, it's very well. It's like.
- 8:21You know how Charles Bambi? Yeah, it's very much of that
- 8:26nature, but it's not that bad. Or maybe it's actually worse.
- 8:30Dude, come on. Full moon.
- 8:31Shit's like, I love full moon stuff, but full moon's not
- 8:34great. That's OK.
- 8:37So the the profession in that one is a lawyer and it's a woman
- 8:41defending a serial killer or something like that.
- 8:44OK so yeah, you know, be wary of a wire.
- 8:47They're gonna be scummy people too.
- 8:48That released October 7th, 1996. No budget, no gross.
- 8:53IMDb 4.1. You know, that's not bad.
- 8:58No. In terms of what we've seen some
- 9:00IMDb scoresby. Yeah, I actually expected it to
- 9:03be way worse than that. So the next one is Ebola
- 9:07syndrome. So the profession in that is
- 9:11restaurant worker. So he has Ebola in that, and he
- 9:17works at a restaurant. Do you remember that really
- 9:19drunk guy at that bar one time when there is an Ebola breakout
- 9:23in the United States? And he was like, this is what I
- 9:25love about this country, 'cause you come here and it's like you
- 9:27have Ebola, you have Ebola, you have Ebola.
- 9:30I do remember that, yeah. I don't, I don't know what he
- 9:32was getting at with that, but. He was getting at somebody give
- 9:36me a ride home. There's no way I could drive.
- 9:38So he's like, please give me a bowl.
- 9:41Yeah, he was fucked up. Yeah.
- 9:43So I've heard that this movie is very upsetting.
- 9:46It's a very. Sounds upsetting.
- 9:47Yeah, it's a it's a grimy movie from all things that I've heard.
- 9:51They released June 15th, 1996. I don't have the budget or the
- 9:55gross, but the IMDb is 6.5. OK, yeah, so it does seem to
- 10:00have a decent score. Yeah, it's actually the highest
- 10:02of all of the movies today. Wow.
- 10:04So the final movie is the Stindhall Syndrome, which is
- 10:07about a cop. OK.
- 10:09So that released I don't need any further explanation that
- 10:13released January 26th 1996. Budget of 3.8 million, no gross.
- 10:18IMDb 6. OK, so not too shabby there.
- 10:23Got lots of syndromes going on. It took me a long time to get a
- 10:26a theme for this by the way, cuz 1996 is really light on horror.
- 10:31It's really not that great. It's like scream and then
- 10:33everything else. The Craft.
- 10:35Oh shit, I forgot the craft was in 96.
- 10:38OK, the scream, the craft, the dentist.
- 10:41In There were heavy hitters in there, but nothing that would
- 10:45fall in line with the theme for the dentist.
- 10:48But there really weren't that many movies.
- 10:51In reality. It was like maybe like 20
- 10:53something. I had that same problem last
- 10:55week with old because 2021. Really no horror from that genre
- 11:00or. No, there was plenty of horror.
- 11:03It was just like trying to find something that.
- 11:04Themes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I can see
- 11:07that. OK, so time for tacklings.
- 11:09OK, all right. It seems like one that would be
- 11:16like rife with for puns. You would think, but prepared to
- 11:21be disappointed. No.
- 11:24So the one that's on the poster is it's been 6 months time for
- 11:28your check out. But it just sounds like an
- 11:32e-mail I get in my chart like it's in six months.
- 11:35That's like the I people trying to get me to come back in like
- 11:38fuck you guys. I'm not doing it right now.
- 11:39I'm doing well once. You all right?
- 11:43The next one. It's time for your final
- 11:45appointment. That sounds a little bit more
- 11:48ominous, but also a little bit odd because it's the dentist and
- 11:52it's supposed to be like, you know, like a lifetime thing.
- 11:56Yeah, I, you know, I, I don't really care for it.
- 11:59So next is your pain is his pleasure, which.
- 12:04Kinky. It's.
- 12:06Like I guess it works, but at the same time, whenever I read
- 12:10that and think about the movie, it doesn't really work because
- 12:15he's not getting pleasure from hurting these people.
- 12:17He is like delusional. Yeah, I was gonna say he's in
- 12:21the middle of like a severe psychotic break.
- 12:22Yeah, and the final one is a riff off of one of the others.
- 12:27It's time for your checkup. Pray it won't be your last.
- 12:31OK, I'm disappointed with this. Yeah, they're a really lack
- 12:34Western tagline, so I'm kind of bummed by.
- 12:36It well, I think we will have some fun with them by the end of
- 12:39this. I hope so.
- 12:39We always say that and then we drop the ball because we
- 12:42overthink it, unless we just go silly with it, which I think we
- 12:47can do for sure with this. Yeah.
- 12:50OK, so fun facts. OK, so Corbin wanted to do this
- 12:55because he wanted to take a break from the type of character
- 12:57that he was playing on LA Law. And I tried to find out what
- 13:02kind of guy he played on that. But this guy has a robust
- 13:05filmography. He seems to be a pretty active
- 13:08character actor. Wow.
- 13:10Yeah, he's got a lot of shit on there.
- 13:11So I don't know what that was like.
- 13:14But you know what? He's not the dentist.
- 13:16So that's why he wanted to do this role for.
- 13:18Some reason I don't know why. I feel like in an alternate
- 13:23universe or maybe this movie is made 10 or 15 years later.
- 13:27I always want to picture Bryan Cranston in this.
- 13:30Role. He kind of looks like him, yeah,
- 13:33right now, at his current age. I was watching interviews while
- 13:37you were asleep out there and he looks a lot like Michael Rooker.
- 13:42No, really. Yeah, just the way that he's
- 13:45aged, it's really interesting. Yeah.
- 13:46I feel like Michael Rooker would be terrifying in this role,
- 13:49mostly because the idea of Michael Rooker being a dentist
- 13:52is like. It's already upsetting, yeah.
- 13:55Yeah, and I mean that in like, because I like the guy's work.
- 14:00I like he plays an intimidating person.
- 14:02I like him as an actor, Yeah, I don't think that he works for
- 14:05this. I think they got the right guy.
- 14:06For this one, yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 14:09All right, so the team that made this, Dennis Stewart Gordon and
- 14:13Charles Finch and Brian Yesna, they wanted to explore the other
- 14:17side of the dental experience. So when people think of the
- 14:20dentist, everybody has that relatable fear that strikes a
- 14:24chord with him. It's a terrifying thing.
- 14:27The writer Paoli was saying, not one time.
- 14:31Do you ever go to the dentist and you not bleed pretty much
- 14:34every single time you go there? You know, like, they draw blood
- 14:36from you. Yeah.
- 14:38So they wanted to take the approach of what it's like from
- 14:43the dentist's perspective, and they wanted to explore how they
- 14:49have a lot of pressure. They brought up the statistic
- 14:52that they have the highest suicide rates of all
- 14:54professions. An actual statistic like this.
- 14:57They have to deal with fucked up mouths and like seeing decay and
- 15:00just like all of these things all day.
- 15:03So, you know, like they wanted to just kind of explore the
- 15:06pressures that go. I kind of like that because
- 15:08like, you know, when you're doing your, you know, the theme
- 15:11being like professions you got to watch out for.
- 15:13It's not necessarily that all of those people in those
- 15:15professions are bad people or that their jobs are inherently
- 15:18like. It's more just like you can all
- 15:23you can always relate to a bad experience with one.
- 15:25It's that and it's just such a vulnerable place.
- 15:29Yes, it's there's tends to be a lot of high pressure working
- 15:32with the public all the time. It always sucks when you work
- 15:36with the public. I don't care what you do, that's
- 15:38just it's a nightmare situation. Yeah.
- 15:40And you know, I was kind of thinking about that the other
- 15:43day when I had my own medical thing going on and everybody was
- 15:50thankfully very friendly with us.
- 15:53But like, I was like, man, imagine just one person having a
- 15:56bad day and then they're like, all right, stuck the needle too
- 15:59far up your arm. Hope that's cool like.
- 16:01Yeah, You got to keep yourself composed.
- 16:03So yeah, like even though you're dealing with your own shit,
- 16:07Yeah, because you're dealing with other people's lives here,
- 16:09Yeah. They wanted to also do a more
- 16:13realistic and grounded story compared to the other shit that
- 16:16they you've done. So for those of you who are
- 16:18unaware, this is the team that brought you films such as
- 16:20Reanimator Society, which we covered recently, Honey, I
- 16:25Shrunk the Kids. Yeah.
- 16:28That famous triple feature, everybody.
- 16:30Yeah, everybody. Yeah, that's, I think that's a
- 16:33classic line of bread there. Yeah.
- 16:35So, yeah, they they just decided like, let's do something that's
- 16:37a little bit more grounded for us here.
- 16:40And even then they took it weird.
- 16:43But I do see and appreciate them actually taking like a grounded
- 16:47approach to something like this. After receiving the final
- 16:51rewrite, Brian Yeltsin actually said it was too narrow for what
- 16:54he wanted, so he took an extra day, and that's when he brought
- 16:57in Charles Finch to touch up the script just a little bit more to
- 16:59open it up, to make it a little bit more weird.
- 17:02OK, give it, give it that flair that they're used to.
- 17:06Exactly. They got Kevin Yeager involved
- 17:10in the special effects to help make the oversized mouth that
- 17:14they used to film the dental scenes.
- 17:16So when we see the mouth and any of the drilling, any of the
- 17:21stuff doing like the dental work, it's an oversized mouth.
- 17:24Oh my. God, so it's like the opposite,
- 17:26opposite of like how a lot of times they'll do like miniatures
- 17:29on sets for big scenes. Yeah, they blew it up.
- 17:33Oh. My God, that's.
- 17:35It's kind of. Impressive that, yeah.
- 17:37And. How do they make the hands look
- 17:39normal size reaching in? Do we normally?
- 17:41We don't see the hands, we see the tools.
- 17:44Man, my brain gaslit me. It's crazy.
- 17:47It's not I. Could have told you I would have
- 17:49sworn on my life that I saw his hand holding that little drill
- 17:52when he's going at Paula's tooth.
- 17:55You're seeing, yeah, they do a good job of shooting it.
- 17:57They did a great way of framing the shots on that.
- 18:00But the the mouth isn't like like absurdly.
- 18:03Large. Yeah, no, I'm not saying that
- 18:05it's absurdly large, but like, I feel like, you know, a hand
- 18:08would be a very obvious comparative piece.
- 18:11Yeah, so they only had one mouth for the entire film, the budget.
- 18:15They dealt with nothing but budget constraints the entire
- 18:18time they made this movie, and that was one of them.
- 18:20They did have to make one more mouth for the child because a
- 18:24child's mouth does not work with the adult mouth with the, you
- 18:29know, type of teeth that they have.
- 18:30Yeah, it's a whole different way out down there.
- 18:33So due to that, they had to be very careful about how they shot
- 18:38which sequences because, yeah, each person receives a different
- 18:41type of dental trauma. So they had to like save the
- 18:46more fucked up drilling scenes for afterwards, like towards the
- 18:51end of the shoot. Yeah, OK.
- 18:52In my head, just immediately, I'm feeling like it probably had
- 18:57to go like Paula, Marv, Brooke. Because if you think about it,
- 19:05we see Paula, it's like more towards the left side of her
- 19:07mouth and Marv tends to be more towards the right side of his
- 19:10mouth and then they focus more on his tongue.
- 19:12I think the one that so we see a lot of like Tooths being pulled
- 19:17from Brooke, yeah. But I think the one that has the
- 19:20most damage done to it is Paula because he is just straight up
- 19:24destroying her molar. With the but it's just that one
- 19:27tooth though. Yeah, but like, that is
- 19:30destroying that tooth. So any other shot we're seeing,
- 19:34like a complete mouth, they have to like, fuck that one up
- 19:36entirely. Yeah.
- 19:40Not to mention the other dude, the IRS guy.
- 19:43Marv. Is that Marv?
- 19:45Yeah, he had his own little thing.
- 19:47It's all right if I call you Alan, you can call me Marv.
- 19:50They had a really cool thing. So I saw they had like a little
- 19:53like sketches of how they designed this and they had the
- 19:56special effects guys explaining how they did it, but they
- 19:59constructed like another little mouthpiece to go over his mouth.
- 20:02They had to make it like a normal sized mouth to make it
- 20:04look like it was like. Exaggerated.
- 20:07Open. Yeah, Because that's how they
- 20:09have him set up there. Yeah, cuz as long as his jaw
- 20:12gets broken. Yeah, so his actual mouth is
- 20:16behind the tongue in. There, I was gonna say.
- 20:17That's how I would picture it, yeah, Being if I was to try and
- 20:21sketch it out myself. Yeah, it was impressive work.
- 20:25That's God, that's so cool. And the final thing, So we'll
- 20:30make the upsetting thing about this movie, one of the upsetting
- 20:33things about this movie, a little bit more fun in a way.
- 20:37So the dog scene. OK.
- 20:38And you, as soon as you said the upsetting thing, even though
- 20:41this whole movie's upsetting, I knew it was going to be about
- 20:44the dog. Yeah.
- 20:45So again, limited budget, they're having to figure out how
- 20:49they're going to do this. They don't have time to make
- 20:51one. They don't have the budget to
- 20:52make one, so they were calling around prop shops to see if they
- 20:56could get any type of dog. They're like, all right, let's
- 20:59get a German Shepherd. That's an accessible one.
- 21:00That's one that is likely to make somebody terrified enough
- 21:04to want to, like, kill it in self-defense.
- 21:07So they found that person's like, yeah, we got one, We'll do
- 21:10it. So they cast a German Shepherd.
- 21:15When they got to filming, they received a Rottweiler.
- 21:19I was going to say that was not a German.
- 21:21Shepherd. So they're like fuck, OK, we
- 21:24can't use the German Shepherd body now, so we need to get a
- 21:28Rottweiler 1. So they like scrambled and call
- 21:31it around and they ended up getting somebody saying, yeah,
- 21:34we got one. And they're like OK, great.
- 21:36So it's the day of shooting and they arrive with the prop for
- 21:42the dead dog and it's a goat. So in this movie, when we see
- 21:50that dog and they pull the whole blanket bag, it's a goat.
- 21:55They had to do everything in their power to disguise it and
- 21:57make it not look like a goat and then instead like a dog.
- 22:01I mean, they could have also just.
- 22:04Not showing the body. No, no, they they had to.
- 22:07I know that's not Yuzna's style, Snile, not his smile, but yeah,
- 22:13I mean to me that seems like the most budget friendly way.
- 22:16I think so too, but I think that they they had to get that shot.
- 22:20And I don't know, like, you know, it's not up to me if
- 22:24that's the creative decision. Like we need to show the dog
- 22:27whatever. But yeah, so I thought it was
- 22:29funny that they had to, you know, go and get a go.
- 22:32And so. So that's my fun facts.
- 22:34OK, so it's time for us to do our good, bad, ugly and absurd.
- 22:38So Jesse, what did you like about this movie?
- 22:42OK. So I really like that this is
- 22:46touching on a very common thing like this is, I want to say it's
- 22:50a universal thing, but it's not necessarily universal, at least
- 22:54not in the United States. Dental insurance is a privilege,
- 23:00Yeah. On top of what our country tends
- 23:03to consider a privilege of health insurance rather than a
- 23:09basic human right, unfortunately, Yeah.
- 23:12And. But, you know, it is something
- 23:15that enough people are familiar with.
- 23:17It's a relatable thing to be stressful.
- 23:21Even if you generally have positive experiences at the
- 23:25dentist, it's still not pleasant.
- 23:27Ever. Yeah.
- 23:28I mean, like it's not a thing that everybody does, but I would
- 23:32say 90% of the population experiences this.
- 23:34Yeah, like there's, there's enough people that you're like.
- 23:37It's a common thing, it's a common experience, It's
- 23:39something that pretty much everybody can relate.
- 23:42To yes, and even if you haven't been able to go, you at least
- 23:45have a frame of reference. For what it is, just the
- 23:47concept, yeah, of it's itself, it's terrifying.
- 23:50You don't even have to have experienced it, but people going
- 23:52in there drilling your fucking teeth, pulling your teeth,
- 23:56that's such a, it's just such a thing that makes you just upset.
- 24:01Yeah, and like the scene where he he pokes the kids mouth and
- 24:05he starts bleeding. He's like, why?
- 24:06You shouldn't have moved around so much.
- 24:08I've had like dentists blame me for bleeding and I'm like, no,
- 24:13you just, you shoved your little pick.
- 24:16Yeah, up in my gum. That's why I bled you.
- 24:18Cut me. I'm sitting perfectly still.
- 24:22So. Yeah.
- 24:23So like, that's relatable. But I also like that they have a
- 24:26little bit of an example showing that he's got stuff going on in
- 24:29his private life. Not that I think it makes it a
- 24:31murder spree. OK, But I also like that it's
- 24:33more nuanced. Like, it's not just that.
- 24:35Like, his wife was cheating on him, so he snapped.
- 24:37Like, he's got clearly some other underlying issues because
- 24:41Brooke, even references like, did you take?
- 24:43Yeah, she was like, did you take your pill today?
- 24:45It sounds like you're having an episode.
- 24:46Remember, you're only supposed to take one.
- 24:48And we saw him like gobbling him down, so we know it wasn't
- 24:53great. I love that scene because he
- 24:55just gets Kaizen. Yeah, Karen comes.
- 24:58In and she's like from her perspective, it probably almost
- 25:01looks like he's trying to like overdose on pills because he.
- 25:03Got he played it off perfectly because he's like playing it off
- 25:05as a coughing fit. Yeah.
- 25:07Yeah, but that's just so funny scene.
- 25:10It's like Talia, when we see her get caught with something in her
- 25:13mouth, like Talia, she's like bra bra.
- 25:14It's like side eyes, like, oh, Oh no.
- 25:19Yeah, and I also like it's, this is a campy movie, but it's the
- 25:25type of camp that it plays it straight because it feels like
- 25:28it's very serious. But like that line I used for
- 25:32the opening, that's an exact quote.
- 25:35And that's his delivery. And he does it twice.
- 25:37He does it once in fantasy and then he actually does it out
- 25:41loud in real life, which that's the opposite of how most people
- 25:45do it, where they have an argument and then later they
- 25:47imagine what they should have, he said.
- 25:49He walks through the steps the right way and he's like, this is
- 25:52what I'm going to say when the time comes.
- 25:54That scene when he's doing that in like the fantasy 1, though,
- 25:57the line afterwards is like, Oh my God, a fucking lobby.
- 26:01He's like, yeah, he's like my wife's.
- 26:04That's my wife and I'm a dentist.
- 26:06Show him how perfect your teeth. Are like and that means she's
- 26:09got a perfect bite show. Him.
- 26:12Yeah, it's so good. I was like, oh damn.
- 26:15And I also like this is also one that like, so I know that there
- 26:20are plenty of movies where the big twist at the end is is all
- 26:23in their head. But like we see right from the
- 26:26beginning him imagining stuff. So we know right away that we
- 26:30can't fully trust everything we're seeing on the screen and
- 26:33he's narrating this whole thing. So this is very much a case of
- 26:37an unreliable narrator. So we can get some really weird
- 26:40visuals and we're like questioning stuff and some of it
- 26:43seems very outlandish until we see other people seeing it.
- 26:47So I just, I think this movie does a lot of really good things
- 26:50and it's it's honestly, it's well paced, which is weird to
- 26:54say because you don't think of a dentist office as being a well
- 26:57placed, well paced place. Yeah, it's, well, we got a
- 27:03really good writing team like this and I think it shows, you
- 27:06know, these are people that are really good at their jobs and
- 27:09they've made some of the horror classics out there.
- 27:12And Brian Yasna is known as being a very meticulous person
- 27:16when he's involved with a movie, he he likes to have a lot of
- 27:19attention to detail. And he's very like, even when
- 27:22he's not the director, even when he's a producer, he's very
- 27:24involved on set. I was watching an interview of
- 27:28Corbin Bernsen. I think that's his last name.
- 27:33Yeah, Bernsen. And he was talking about how
- 27:37this movie experience, it was so fast-paced because they had such
- 27:42a short amount of time. They had such a low budget.
- 27:44He said that they he didn't even know if they really had enough,
- 27:46like, film stock to get this thing done.
- 27:48So they had to, like, move fast and anytime, you know, like,
- 27:53Brian is like, don't think about it.
- 27:55Just like, just do it and like, go all out with this, OK, Just
- 27:59do it. And I think it ended up working
- 28:02in the benefit of the movie here because, like, you get a lot of
- 28:05people and they're just like, going with their instincts for
- 28:06what this character is. Yes.
- 28:08And yeah, I think it was a really good performance all
- 28:10around. Also, we've got like some fun
- 28:12appearances in this. We've got a little baby, Mark
- 28:15Ruffalo. I know like and I was surprised
- 28:18that I didn't say introducing Mark Ruffalo.
- 28:20Yeah, like. Damn he was a baby at this
- 28:23point. And he, like, honestly, if I
- 28:26didn't know it was Mike Ruffalo, I wouldn't have known it was
- 28:28Mike Ruffalo, you know? He looks exactly.
- 28:30No, I mean, that's what I mean. Like I can see but like hearing
- 28:36him and watching. Him.
- 28:37Oh yeah, his voice is a lot different.
- 28:38Yeah, and then we've got Ken for Ray, which that's really, that's
- 28:43always fun. Jan Hogue.
- 28:45I'm doing my yearly rewatch of Scream Queen, so I miss Bing.
- 28:50You know, it's just, it's a, it's a really good cast.
- 28:53Yeah. OK.
- 28:54All right. Is that if you're good?
- 28:56Yes. OK.
- 28:58So I thought that they did a great job with the the tooth
- 29:03trauma in this movie here. This movie's effects are fucking
- 29:08crazy. And I just when you get the
- 29:11shots of the teeth being drilled, those teeth, Oh my God.
- 29:16Like they're not bleeding. So it's not 100% realistic, but
- 29:20you see that and it's just good at getting that reaction from
- 29:24you. Like, yeah, that's some of the
- 29:25most that I've cringed watching a movie.
- 29:28I'd say probably since we watched Cabin Fever 2 with the
- 29:32fingernails. Yeah.
- 29:34Yeah. But this movie has a lot more of
- 29:36that because anytime you go there with the teeth, it's just,
- 29:40it's just so fucking upsetting. And I think one of the things
- 29:44that might get overlooked that is a big part of why it's so
- 29:48effective was the sound. Because when they're doing that,
- 29:52you can hear the little bits of the needle just scraping the
- 29:57teeth and you know that sound. And you know, when you hear that
- 30:00sound, that feeling like it just takes you back to being in the
- 30:04dentist. So I thought that that stuff was
- 30:07amazing. I, like I said before, I thought
- 30:09the performances were great. And I love that.
- 30:12It was just like a relatable horror because I think that is,
- 30:16it's not something that's easily achieved, I guess.
- 30:18Like, yeah, you know, like, there's something always there,
- 30:21like a fear that you can play on, like, you know, being
- 30:23killed. But that's just so basic.
- 30:25But this one right here is so specific and something that
- 30:27everybody knows because they've all experienced this before.
- 30:30Yeah. And it's like it's another
- 30:32thing, too, that like, you're always nervous about the
- 30:37dentist. You can't see what they're doing
- 30:39in there, and you're kind of having to trust them.
- 30:41But I think there's also an element of like, OK, he starts
- 30:44to fuck me up. I just get up out of the chair,
- 30:46right? Like, what's he going to do?
- 30:48And then this movie answers that.
- 30:50So I have this thing when I'm in the dentist where, you know, the
- 30:55whole thing of like going into the abyss, Yeah, like where you
- 30:59like, you know, if you're like, sitting up somewhere like.
- 31:00Call to the abyss. Call to the abyss.
- 31:02Yeah, I have my own version of that with the dentist.
- 31:04And it's like anytime they're like doing something or drilling
- 31:07in my mouth, I'm like, what if I just bite?
- 31:09What if I just bite right now? Like I would fuck myself up but
- 31:12like I'm getting the call. Like he's calling me right now
- 31:17do I do? And like, I have to actually
- 31:21actively like, find myself. I have my own version of that
- 31:24and it's like whenever you know they're in there and they're
- 31:26doing the the scraping and stuff, I always picture old boy
- 31:30when they're like gonna take out the teeth and he's like licking
- 31:33the hammer and he's like. Part.
- 31:35Of me is like whenever I start licking the the scraping tool
- 31:41and then I have just to think about it back then I'll never be
- 31:43able to go back to that. I'm just imagining like your
- 31:46head, like you're win back, but your head's leaning forward and
- 31:50your tongue is just pulling out. The Dennis is like, oh, what are
- 31:54you doing? Andre would never have me back.
- 32:00Hey, if we ever get a Dennis Three, can we have both of these
- 32:03things happen? Oh man, it's called Corbin up.
- 32:08Corbin, we have some ideas. Yeah.
- 32:11Oh God. OK, so let's talk about some
- 32:14bad. OK, I I love the concept.
- 32:19This is my brain how it goes. I love the concept of these
- 32:23relaxing rooms, but from like an infection control standpoint,
- 32:29it's a nightmare like that kids wearing a lay.
- 32:31Is this a disposable lay? Because it doesn't look like one
- 32:35of the Dollar Tree ones where you get 3 in a pack.
- 32:37So it's not like that big of a write off.
- 32:38Like he's just wearing it and getting all of his slobbery
- 32:41germs all over it it like, and then like the opera room, all
- 32:46those velvet curtains like. I think the opera room is for
- 32:49special occasions. Like I forgot about that though
- 32:52that I love that addition to this movie here just having
- 32:56different themed rooms. For the amorphous of dust in
- 32:59those curtains is so stressful to me.
- 33:02But I mean, any other room's gonna have normal levels of dust
- 33:06too, It's not like. Yeah, but you don't normally go
- 33:09into a dentist's office and see an ornate velvet curtain draped
- 33:14across an entire wall. You're not going to the right
- 33:17dentist. Yeah, maybe I do need to go
- 33:20ahead and get myself 86 from my dentist office.
- 33:23So I can. Find this different dentist.
- 33:26My dentist has a whole Jurassic Park theme room.
- 33:29It's fucking like pterodactyls just like, fine.
- 33:32I like to imagine that he gets into character as AT Rex and so
- 33:36he only gets like your front teeth cuz he's.
- 33:39Like he's like leaning over with his chest over there in your
- 33:43mouth. Just like, I'm sorry I can't
- 33:44reach. It's like the guy from Scary
- 33:47Movie too. So, yeah, so that's just things
- 33:52like that where like the like braces are orthodontist, like
- 33:56that's a different specialty which I never had braces.
- 33:59Can you go to a regular dentist to get them off or is that also
- 34:02the orthodontist? I only went to the orthodontist
- 34:06whenever I got mine removed, but there could be like somebody
- 34:11that specializes in both, I don't know.
- 34:13OK. So yeah, just like those little
- 34:16like my brain not being able to turn off real world stuff for a
- 34:21moment. Yeah.
- 34:23But yeah, those that's really that.
- 34:26OK, All right. So I don't know, man, it's hard.
- 34:31I wish I had more Ken Foray. Some of the characters in
- 34:35general say. That about every movie.
- 34:36Yeah, that's true. They're just kind of like
- 34:38secondary characters. It's not even like AB plot, like
- 34:41it's just kind of like a we'll just have these guys.
- 34:46It's like suddenly the cops show up and I'm like, Oh yeah,
- 34:48they're doing this whole investment.
- 34:49Like I am surprised literally every time the cops pop up on
- 34:52screen. Yeah, but man, like, I, I, you
- 34:55know, like, I really struggle to think of like, like I almost
- 34:58want to say the cast of the workers there in the dentist
- 35:04office were underutilized. But then again, they all serve
- 35:09their purpose. Yeah, I like honestly, I feel
- 35:13like they all, like you got to know them very well for the
- 35:17amount of screen time they had, which I think means that they
- 35:20did a really good job of utilizing their time on screen.
- 35:23You know, one thing, I guess, like the ending is kind of
- 35:26strange. It feels like it could have
- 35:28naturally ended with them being taken away at the dentist's
- 35:31office, but like, he gets away for a minute and goes to the
- 35:34school and then is busted there. And it feels like that could
- 35:40have been like a bigger thing. But really, we only spend maybe
- 35:452 minutes there total. Yeah.
- 35:48And I don't know, that just that kind of felt like it could have
- 35:51been good sequel material. Like he we caught with him
- 35:56driving away right next to the cop.
- 35:58I love that shot. Yeah.
- 36:01And then I thought that that was going to be the last we saw of
- 36:03him. But no, he's at the dentist's
- 36:05office or at the school he's teaching instead ordering
- 36:11everybody to do extractions. And then they're like, now we'll
- 36:13get them. So I guess I would have handled
- 36:17the ending differently, but those are really the only things
- 36:20I could think. So ugly stuff.
- 36:25OK. So obviously the abuse of the
- 36:29vulnerability of your patients, that's never cool.
- 36:33Yeah, abuse of your staff. Yeah.
- 36:38Abuse of your wife? Yeah, the wife cheating.
- 36:47You're not so sure about. That I'm not so sure because he
- 36:49treats it as like every woman that sees this man has sucked
- 36:53his cock so. But wait, what?
- 36:57Cuz it's like the same thing with Paula too.
- 37:00What? Do you mean?
- 37:03Like when he sees Matt over at Paula's house, he immediately is
- 37:06like, they're also having an affair.
- 37:08They are. Do we know that though?
- 37:10We're only seeing it from Alan's POV.
- 37:13See, The thing is, and he's already spiraled.
- 37:15I think any this movie it's upfront about what is real and
- 37:20what's not. When something's not real, they
- 37:23weigh it out and show you reality immediately after the
- 37:28bad thing has happened or you know, anything else.
- 37:32But like, no, that right there was real.
- 37:34And he, you know, she even, like, talks about him at the
- 37:38dental office. I'm just saying I have.
- 37:42Some. But what does?
- 37:42How does that negate the cheating thing?
- 37:45No cheating is bad. I'm just, you know, saying I I
- 37:50question if it actually happened or not.
- 37:53The cheating. Yeah.
- 37:57No, I think it that very much happened.
- 38:00That was the thing that broke the camel's back right there.
- 38:02That was a straw that broke the camel's back.
- 38:04I don't think this movie is ever fooling the viewers.
- 38:07I think the viewers, people that are watching the movie, get the
- 38:11full story laid out in front of them.
- 38:14It's the character that is really having a hard time
- 38:19discerning what's real and what's not.
- 38:21It's just he, he goes to this place where he's like spiraling
- 38:25that everything is rotten and decaying.
- 38:30And it just makes it hard for me to trust everything I'm seeing
- 38:33on screen because he is not reliable as a narrator.
- 38:37So that's my that's my thing. Cheating is still bad.
- 38:40It's still an ugly. I just you like in cheating.
- 38:44Yeah, no, I wasn't saying that cheating is like.
- 38:47Questionable. Maybe it's OK in the situation.
- 38:49The cheating is questionable if it occurred, but he was clearly
- 38:53not a good husband to her. No, she was not a Good Wife to
- 38:56him. Yeah, their whole relationship
- 38:58dynamic was. Terrible.
- 38:59Yeah, they were not good for each other.
- 39:01Yeah, and his like. Yeah.
- 39:06Also obligatory dog death. Well, also very ugly.
- 39:10Yeah, I think you pretty much covered everything right there
- 39:14because those are a lot of the things I was going to say.
- 39:16OK then. Yeah, all right.
- 39:18So absurd. His monologue is like so fucking
- 39:23funny to me. the OR not his monologue but like his voice
- 39:26over narration. Yes thank you.
- 39:29It's so fucking funny to me the whole time where he's like
- 39:32narrating everything and equating it to tooth decay.
- 39:35I love the dental puns. Yeah, I.
- 39:37Do I do love it? I just think it's very absurd
- 39:40because again, like I said, this movie is like the air of it, the
- 39:45shooting of it and everything feels very like straight and
- 39:47dramatic, but it's like the decay.
- 39:51How deep does it go down to the nerve?
- 39:54Like I think it's absurd in a good way.
- 39:57He. Kind of reminds me of the Barber
- 40:01Fred from Courage to the Cowardly Dog, where he has to
- 40:05shave all the hair because it's naughty.
- 40:08Naughty. Yeah, my absurd.
- 40:12Is their pool guy is Prison Mike and that Mark Ruffalo is in this
- 40:21movie? Yeah, and isn't that weird like
- 40:26how many like big actors show up in dentist related scenes in
- 40:31movies? Like think about Little Shop of
- 40:33Horrors. Like, oh, hey, there's Jack
- 40:36Nicholson. Yeah, but it's like before they
- 40:39like. Got big?
- 40:39Yeah, I mean, I know that's only two examples, but it's still
- 40:44like weird that I have to immediately come to mind.
- 40:47Nothing on the prison mic. He just gave me a blank stare
- 40:51when I said that. You don't see it.
- 40:54I I'm going to be really honest for a second, I was like, oh, is
- 40:59it? And I was like, no, prison mic
- 41:01is just Steve Carell and I didn't want to be stupid on
- 41:05recording and now you're forcing it out of me so.
- 41:09You know, like this is a safe place to be stupid.
- 41:12I like I often have my dumbest moments on this show right here.
- 41:17Yeah, so I that's that's where my brain went with that.
- 41:20OK, so I saw what you were doing, but he needed a purple
- 41:25bandana. Yeah, then it would maybe land.
- 41:29Yeah, maybe. I would have been funny then.
- 41:32Maybe. Maybe.
- 41:35OK, what do you raise it? 8 1/2.
- 41:41Wow, OK, yeah, I think I'm gonna go like way against most
- 41:46people's norm with this or like, you know what most people would
- 41:51say about this movie? I'd say it's a nine.
- 41:53OK, It's super effective, man. I just.
- 41:56I think it's it's well written, well shot, well acted.
- 42:00Yeah, everything I thought played out perfectly.
- 42:04It's just really good. I'm surprised.
- 42:06I'm surprised that people don't like it as much as I do.
- 42:10And the pacing of it I think is really good.
- 42:12Yeah, that's a big. Part that's that's a big thing,
- 42:14because this has the potential to be seriously boring.
- 42:18That's true, yeah. Yeah.
- 42:19It could be in the wrong hands for sure.
- 42:21All right, so what's the average?
- 42:228.75. 8.75 Great. All right.
- 42:26All right, let's. Do this.
- 42:28So we start off and we hear Alan talking and he's saying
- 42:32something about Puccini will be just right.
- 42:36And then we see him like his hands are in the air and it
- 42:39looks like he's trying to do dental work and he's talking to
- 42:42his imaginary patient. And he was like, let me tell you
- 42:47how I got here. It feels very, it's very 90s
- 42:49like. I'm sure you're wondering how I
- 42:51got here. It feels dream like to me
- 42:54because they, the way they shot it, they have like these dream
- 42:58like filters over it and it just, it's like, and let me tell
- 43:02you this story. Yeah.
- 43:04And we immediately have this moment where he's like, I had a
- 43:06beautiful wife and home and then it comes to him going.
- 43:12Yeah, yeah, it's funny. Yeah, and he is.
- 43:14He's talking about there's like the stench of decay underneath
- 43:17it all. He's getting a call from the IRS
- 43:20and he's like, no, my business manager messed up sending out my
- 43:22returns. You're going to need to speak to
- 43:24him. It's not me.
- 43:26And then he's mad about a stain on his shirt.
- 43:29It's a very like, not noticeable saying.
- 43:31I get being pissed that the cleaners missed it once you do
- 43:34see it because if you're paying for your service, it feels like
- 43:37that should not be there. But also, that's not Brooke's
- 43:40fault. And when she's like, well, I've
- 43:43been really busy with this charity, he goes, but now I need
- 43:46to wear this shirt. And this shirt I only wear with
- 43:48the diamond cufflinks. And I don't suppose you've
- 43:50picked those up from the Jewelers yet?
- 43:51And he's like a fucking asshole. And she's like, OK, well, here's
- 43:54an early anniversary gift. Not early as in a week early.
- 43:58Early as in I was going to give it to you tonight at our
- 44:01anniversary dinner. Platinum cufflinks.
- 44:05Yeah, and everything's cool after that.
- 44:07No, except he's like. But these cost a fortune.
- 44:10And she's like, could you not? See, that's one of those things
- 44:14I think could be real. Like it's almost like a
- 44:16compliment. Like I bet these costs a lot of
- 44:18money, you know what I mean? Like these would look really
- 44:20good. And then I could see how it
- 44:22could be perceived as like a thing about money being brought
- 44:24up instead. Cuz it's definitely implied
- 44:26she's like a housewife. Yeah.
- 44:30Especially like the whole line with like that.
- 44:31I've been really busy with the charity, you know, like.
- 44:34I thought maybe she was working at like, yeah, charity or like a
- 44:37nonprofit type thing. No, I think that's like how she
- 44:40like fills her time. OK, so yeah, he's really into
- 44:45it. And then she's like, all right,
- 44:48So what are we doing tonight? And he's like, well, I've got
- 44:51his dinner, dinner reservations at 7:00, so you need to wear
- 44:58your black dress. And then he goes to kiss her and
- 45:02finds out she's got nothing on under the robe.
- 45:04And he's like, you wear that in front of the pool, Pool man, he
- 45:07says. Pool man.
- 45:07He doesn't say pool boy well. He's a he's a man.
- 45:10I just, I think it's funny because it's the common term.
- 45:12So I appreciate that little touch characterization from him.
- 45:16She and she was like, I'm wearing a robe.
- 45:19She was out there flirting with him and he saw that before he
- 45:22called her in there. And yeah, it is kind of weird to
- 45:25be kind of naked out there. But he didn't know she didn't
- 45:28have anything on under the robe until he started pulling it off
- 45:31either. You know what I mean?
- 45:32It's not like it was like I'm definitely naked under here.
- 45:36I guess. Come on man, let's not be a
- 45:39naive about the. Situation here.
- 45:41I'm being naive about it. I'm just saying like, you know,
- 45:46he did not know she was naked until he was pulling her robe
- 45:48off. Yeah, OK.
- 45:50Yeah. Then he goes outside and he
- 45:52yells at the pool man, 'cause there's sledge all over the
- 45:53ground and he's like, well, you got a broken filter.
- 45:55He's like, well, you're gonna come fix it tomorrow then,
- 45:57right? He goes, it'll probably be next
- 45:58week. He goes, if you want a job, he's
- 46:01like, all right man. Like I said tomorrow.
- 46:04Yeah, so he drives off and then as he's driving, he notices that
- 46:08his hand is a little bit dirty too.
- 46:11And then he makes the connection that he didn't touch the pool
- 46:14guy, he touched his wife, who must have been touching the pool
- 46:19guy or the pool guy touching her.
- 46:21So he drives back to the house and goes back inside and sneaks
- 46:25and watches from inside and catches her cheating on him.
- 46:28Yep. And then he goes to his Home
- 46:31Office and grabs the gun from his drawer.
- 46:34And that's when he like, basically, he goes out there,
- 46:37holds her head down a little bit farther from where it was and is
- 46:44screaming at them. And he was telling her to bite
- 46:48and he's about to shoot. And then we see that this is all
- 46:51just a fantasy. Yeah, the way that that plays
- 46:54out, though, is so it's fun. Yeah.
- 46:57She has perfect teeth. I kind of wish we had gotten
- 47:00that. I know that would have been.
- 47:02That would have been a great way to do that, yeah.
- 47:05Meanwhile at his office, like appointments are running late
- 47:07and they're all desperately trying to get a hold of him.
- 47:09Which like, OK, I get it if you have your own practice, but
- 47:13wouldn't you have at least like one more actual full DDS?
- 47:17You know, like. Not the one that I work at all.
- 47:20Right? Work at that I go to.
- 47:21Really. Yeah.
- 47:22It's only one, just one guy. Yeah.
- 47:24And the other people there are the, I don't know the term for
- 47:27that dental hygienist. Yeah, that's all.
- 47:31But it's a family owned business.
- 47:33And I guess that that's what I mean, it's probably how most of
- 47:35them are. That's how this one comes across
- 47:38too. OK.
- 47:39Yeah, I guess I was confused by yours because there's two names
- 47:42in the name of the office. Yeah, it was his dad.
- 47:45He inherited it from him. But then they could just leave
- 47:49it at the one name. I think that there was a time
- 47:52where they worked together. You see my confusion though.
- 47:56Yeah, I get it. Yeah.
- 47:58OK, so Alan goes to Paula's house 'cause he's like following
- 48:03the pool man map and Paula sees him and he lies about trying to
- 48:09do a surprise party for Brooke and was like trying to get dates
- 48:12and availability and didn't want to make a call because he didn't
- 48:14want Brooke to get suspicious. And then he sees like Paula's
- 48:19teeth and thinks he sees Sledge in her mouth.
- 48:23Yeah, it looks, Yeah, You see a bunch of cavities back there.
- 48:26He's like, it's been a while since you've been.
- 48:28Stop by tomorrow. Yeah, he's like, I'll have
- 48:31somebody come make an appointment.
- 48:32I'll have somebody call, make an appointment for you.
- 48:35And. Then he goes around back and he
- 48:37sees Matt go inside the house with Paula and then he's chased
- 48:41and attacked by not a German Shepherd.
- 48:44Yep, a Rottweiler. Yep, and old dog, it breaks free
- 48:47from the gate and then ends up biting his arm and then in like
- 48:50a last sit shepherd, he ends up shooting the dog just yeah, it
- 48:55sucks. So go back to the dentist
- 48:59office. We I love this transition shot
- 49:02because it goes to you see heaven and like the dog went to
- 49:05heaven. Oh no, we're in the dentist
- 49:07office. Yeah, and Karen does go.
- 49:09Welcome to hell. Yeah, yeah, cuz he's got these.
- 49:13Themed rooms cuz he believes that going to the dentist should
- 49:16be a more relaxing experience for the patients and that there
- 49:19will be better outcomes, which is a really nice idea in theory.
- 49:22I don't necessarily love the execution of this, although I do
- 49:25love that all of the jackets and whatnot are themed to the room.
- 49:29I think it's awesome and the themed.
- 49:31Music and everything. Yeah, I think it's a great idea.
- 49:35So Alan arrives at the office, he sneaks in.
- 49:38He starts to have like, audio hallucinations of Brook telling
- 49:42him that he's boring and yeah, what?
- 49:46The way you said, Brook. Brook yeah.
- 49:49Brook yeah. So yeah, he's having like
- 49:51hallucinations and he's hearing the the pool guy and stuff like
- 49:54that. And then he puts on his jacket
- 49:57and he's ready to get to. It So he says that he's been
- 50:00there for two hours. He just had a migraine, so he's
- 50:02back in his office. So first patient of the day is,
- 50:06oh Jodie Sanders, a little kid having his very first dentist
- 50:09trip. Is it just me or does he seem a
- 50:11little bit old for this to be his first dentist trip?
- 50:14You don't know. Looks like 5:00-ish to me.
- 50:17I don't know how old you're supposed to be for your first
- 50:19dentist trip. I feel like it's younger than
- 50:20five. I'm not sure.
- 50:23I feel like it's before kindergarten.
- 50:26He's the first one he remem remembers since he's so young.
- 50:29She just says it's the first one every.
- 50:30Time. This kid, he's crying.
- 50:34Like, I don't know if he noticed that, but he's got tears in his
- 50:36eyes. They were playing the scenes
- 50:38back in the interviews that I was watching in there.
- 50:41And yeah, you can see a couple of tears in his eye.
- 50:43And like, the guy's like, oh, are you nervous?
- 50:45And he shakes his head. He's like, no, I'm not.
- 50:48Yeah. So he's like, OK, let's take him
- 50:49back to the room. So he takes him back to the
- 50:51rainforest room. Yeah.
- 50:53He's got him like the little jacket on and he's got the lay
- 50:57on him. And you know, it's a pretty
- 50:59chill environment. And as he's doing this in his
- 51:01head, he is thinking like, OK, well, obviously I'm going to
- 51:04kick Brooke out. And then the mom is holding
- 51:07Jodi's hand. And she's like, what a
- 51:10impressive practice you have here.
- 51:13Seems like it's pretty lucrative work these days.
- 51:15And he goes, well, I work hard, too hard to have it all just
- 51:20disappear. If I kick her out, she'll take
- 51:23half of everything. And he's like spiraling, some of
- 51:25it internal, some of it external.
- 51:28And he's getting very aggressive with Jody's teeth.
- 51:30And the shot of the teeth bothers me because they're like,
- 51:35you can see the looseness of the gums around it.
- 51:38Yeah, it's. Yeah.
- 51:40Icky and he pokes the gum and it just starts shooting out blood.
- 51:45It's a lot of blood. It's more than just like a
- 51:48little poke that happens and you just soap to get rid of it.
- 51:52This is like he is bleeding down the front of his mouth.
- 51:56Mom swoops him up and leaves. Candy tries to stop him.
- 52:03Yeah, and stop her and him. Everybody just chalks it up to
- 52:07the. Kid being.
- 52:08A little bit too afraid of the Dennis well.
- 52:10Here's The thing is that because he's so worked up, Alan, like he
- 52:15is complete 180 from how he was acting with Jody out in the
- 52:20waiting group, right? And he's like, he wasn't sitting
- 52:22still. He needs to learn how to sit
- 52:23still. Sir, he is 5.
- 52:26Yeah, you need to learn how to work with children, man.
- 52:29Yeah, there's a whole different. Like, if you can't accommodate
- 52:32children at your practice, just say so.
- 52:33There are different types like you can have like children
- 52:36dentists. I remember I that's what I had
- 52:38whenever I was growing up. And then eventually, like I
- 52:40remember going to my first adult dentist and that was a
- 52:43terrifying experience. My little sister used to get so
- 52:47worked up going to the dentist she would cry until she threw
- 52:50up. Gross.
- 52:51And then he had to go in there and get in that mouth.
- 52:54Like because my mom would schedule her appointments at the
- 52:56same obviously makes sense. So I would be done ages before
- 53:00her because she'd just be putting up such a fit.
- 53:03And they had like a little prize room where after you were done
- 53:06with your appointment, you could get like a little prize from one
- 53:09of the buckets. So I just, I took a lot of time
- 53:12because again, I'm a Trent and I have no chill.
- 53:14I took a lot of time picking out the perfect prize at the end
- 53:18because I had another fucking hour to go before my sister was
- 53:21ready to leave. Got a lot of time to bowl that
- 53:23one over, All right? So he calls his wife back in his
- 53:29office and he tells her that he loves her and she's kind of
- 53:33freaked out, kind of noticing that he's being weird.
- 53:36Ask him if he's taking any of his medication today.
- 53:39And he's like, I'm running late, so can you meet me at the office
- 53:44tonight? Yeah.
- 53:45Oh, and he smelled cigarettes on her before and she's like I.
- 53:50Smoking. She's fully smoking.
- 53:51She's smoking in the scene right here.
- 53:53Yeah, yeah. And then I like how like when
- 53:57she hangs up and she's like Dick and he's like bitch, yeah, yeah.
- 54:02They hate each other. Yeah, it's a terrible.
- 54:04Religion and honestly they hated each other before the shooting
- 54:06happened. Yeah, it was a terrible dynamic.
- 54:09Yeah, they don't need to be together at all.
- 54:11No, neither of them seems like the type to want to admit
- 54:15failure. Yeah, so.
- 54:21Which is in fact a stage name. Steve, her manager, had
- 54:24suggested April showers, but she said she prefers rain.
- 54:28Not like the weather, but like the Queen, which has worked
- 54:32because she is a local beauty queen.
- 54:35See, whenever I out of the rain, I was like, all right, rain it
- 54:39in, rain it in April. Too much.
- 54:43Yeah. She's got very much like a
- 54:44Marilyn Monroe kind of vibe going on.
- 54:46Yeah, they, I think that they put her in here because the
- 54:50writers were talking about how some people go to the dentist to
- 54:54become famous because they want to have good looking teeth and
- 54:57it's all part of the look that you're supposed to have as a
- 54:59star. Well, and she even says because
- 55:01Karen was just going to do the cleaning and let her.
- 55:03She was like, nothing looks major.
- 55:06Alan's running late. Like, we'll just clean you up
- 55:09and you can go. And she goes, oh, well, my
- 55:10manager Steve, wanted to talk to the dentist.
- 55:13My mouth is the only part that he hasn't fully made over.
- 55:15Yeah, so that's intense. And she's got beautiful
- 55:19chompers. Like she.
- 55:20What does she need made over? He's going to get veneers for
- 55:23her or something. Yeah, if that was even the thing
- 55:25back then. So he goes back there.
- 55:28She's like, all right, don't worry about it, you can go home.
- 55:30But in walks Allen, and he's like, all right, I'm here, I'm
- 55:34going to do it. Making Karen look like a fool.
- 55:36Yeah. And he's like, there's a shadow
- 55:39by the whatever fucking tooth, the XK 7420, that one.
- 55:44Yeah. And she's like, yeah, but it
- 55:47wasn't really indicative of anything.
- 55:48He's like, Nope. It's it's a cavity.
- 55:50We're just going to go ahead and fill it.
- 55:51And April is fully nervous at this point and she's like, I
- 55:55just can I nod. And he goes, well, it's your
- 55:56mouth, I suppose if you just want to lose your tooth, that's
- 55:59fine. And she's like.
- 56:02Yeah, it's all. Fucked up.
- 56:03I would not. This guy came in with some
- 56:05intense energy and I would not want to be a part of it.
- 56:07Meanwhile Steve is out in the waiting room.
- 56:10Sarah this like probably 17 year old or something.
- 56:13She is there to get her braces off.
- 56:15She is 2 hours early for her appointment but she's just so
- 56:19excited and Steve sees her, asks her to do a catwalk and gives
- 56:25her his card. Yeah, it's, it's kind of weird.
- 56:27I so I looked her up because I, I didn't know how old she was.
- 56:31Either I didn't know she was supposed to be a kid or she's
- 56:32supposed to be an adult. She references her mom coming to
- 56:35pick her up. But the actor is 20 here, so
- 56:38like, I don't know if she was supposed to be a kid or not
- 56:40still. And I don't know if I'm supposed
- 56:42to be creeped out by the way Mark Ruffalo's characters.
- 56:45Like, all right now, you could be a model.
- 56:47Good. Get up and do a little want to
- 56:49walk for me because if it's a kid then that's much more
- 56:52upsetting. No, I think the implication is
- 56:55definitely that she's going to be a kid.
- 56:56I know the actress may have been 20, but.
- 56:59She she looks really. Young references to her mom
- 57:03dropping her off and stuff like that, Yeah, I think that makes
- 57:05that and the fact that she not that adults don't have braces
- 57:09like it was. Just a more.
- 57:10Common thing. Yeah, I was in high school
- 57:13whenever I had my braces, so yeah.
- 57:15And it does come across creepy until he gives her an actual
- 57:18card and even and then he seems like he wouldn't be great to
- 57:21have as a manager. Yeah, I at first I thought that,
- 57:25I mean, just from all the dialogue from April beforehand,
- 57:28I thought that he was going to be a really creepy character,
- 57:31but he ends up being pretty like defensive of.
- 57:34Her. Yeah, a little bit.
- 57:35Yeah, so we got back into the dentist's office with Alan and
- 57:40April, and he's going to give her some of the laughing gas and
- 57:46knock her out. And he gets her all set up.
- 57:49And then he starts to have this vision of her grabbing his junk
- 57:55and. She's like, I won't hurt you if
- 57:56you don't hurt me. And then he's imagining Sledge
- 57:59on his crotch. And then he imagines that she is
- 58:03Brooke instead and starts kissing her and starts
- 58:06undressing her and then starts choking her.
- 58:09And this whole scene is incredibly fucking upsetting.
- 58:11I. Think the most upsetting part is
- 58:12like it cuts back there and then it's just him fingering her
- 58:15mouth. He's doing the same thing that
- 58:17he saw Matt doing to Brooke, which we didn't even talk about
- 58:20that, but his hands were fucking disgusting.
- 58:23Yeah, like pull Swatch. And she's like, give me some of
- 58:25that. Yeah, that that they were
- 58:29probably into some weird kingship so.
- 58:31They I can't. I can't.
- 58:33Yeah, yeah. This is a really.
- 58:35That is not a safe lubricant, no.
- 58:39So yeah, this is a really upsetting scene.
- 58:41He's like undressing her because he's envisioning it being Brooke
- 58:45and making out with her, but in reality he's just doing all this
- 58:48to April as she's knocked out. And then she comes to the
- 58:51nitrous is running out, and she's coughing.
- 58:54And he, like, very quickly is like, oh, you're having a bad
- 58:56reaction. And he's saying all this as he's
- 58:58redressing her, except he can't pull up her nylon.
- 59:01So he rips them the rest of the way off.
- 59:03And from April's perspective, this is the most terrifying
- 59:09fucking situation imaginable. Yeah, Can you imagine?
- 59:12You wake up and the person just had you fully undressed.
- 59:16It's it's awful. And shit, yeah, yeah, it's
- 59:19fucked up. So she's super dazed too, and
- 59:24she's screaming for Steve to come get her.
- 59:27So Steve goes back there and grabs her in.
- 59:30And Alan is very adamant that like, it was just a bad reaction
- 59:32to the night dress. Like her shoes are off 'cause
- 59:34we're trying to make her more comfortable.
- 59:36Yeah, and that all works for the moment.
- 59:38For a second. Yeah, so Steve's like, all
- 59:40right. He carries her eyes like, all
- 59:41right, we're going to get you taken care of.
- 59:42Don't worry about it. So Jessica, the other hygienist,
- 59:46goes in there to clean up the room, and she sees the nylons,
- 59:49and she shows Karen. And Karen, honestly, like, she
- 59:53tries to give him the benefit of the doubt.
- 59:54And she was like, maybe they fell out of her purse.
- 59:57You know, we don't know that they were hers.
- 59:58We don't know the entire situation.
- 1:00:00And Jessica's like, did you see that mess when she came out?
- 1:00:03Yeah, like when you see that right there, you like red flags
- 1:00:07all over the place. Yeah, and Karen's like, well, I
- 1:00:11can ask him about it, but I think Jessica's worried that
- 1:00:14it'll just end up making it more like her getting in trouble
- 1:00:16instead of anything actually being resolved.
- 1:00:18Yeah. So now we get Mr. IRS.
- 1:00:24Marvin Goldblum. Yeah, he arrives and he is.
- 1:00:28You've got some pretty significant tax problems.
- 1:00:32I have some pretty significant dental problems.
- 1:00:35Maybe a little gentle quid pro quo?
- 1:00:38Yeah, it was, 'cause he comes in there, he's like, oh man, don't
- 1:00:41fucking hassle me about this shit right now.
- 1:00:42And he's like, no, no, I got some dental work that he done.
- 1:00:45Yeah, and he's like, OK, fine, go to the backroom.
- 1:00:48And then Steve comes in and punches his lights out.
- 1:00:52Yeah, and he calls him a creepo. He never, he should have
- 1:00:55outright said what it was. Always says he's a fucking
- 1:00:57creep. We're suing.
- 1:00:59Yeah, and then he just leaves. Yeah.
- 1:01:03So this is when he's like, all right.
- 1:01:06He's like, well, first he has this miniature rant about like,
- 1:01:09nobody caring about the work they do.
- 1:01:11He's like, we uphold society and keep everybody's mouths together
- 1:01:16and nobody gives a shit. You guys can all leave.
- 1:01:21And then? And Sarah, like, is trying to
- 1:01:23stick around. She's like, maybe he can squeeze
- 1:01:26me in real quick. And candy, like, God, Jan Hoag
- 1:01:30is just like a plus here. She was like, I would love to
- 1:01:33have her as like, the receptionist greeting me and and
- 1:01:37like, yeah, she seems to genuinely care, yeah.
- 1:01:39Yeah, well, when he arrived, he was cuz she was going up.
- 1:01:43She's finally getting her braces off.
- 1:01:45She was going to have a party that night.
- 1:01:46Yeah. And then the IRS guy's like, I'm
- 1:01:48the next patient. And then Candy is like, I'm
- 1:01:53sorry, kids. Yeah, Candy's like I like Sarah
- 1:01:56as a person. I also like the ability to pay
- 1:01:59my bills. And if the IRS shuts us down, I
- 1:02:02can't do that. So yeah, Sarah's bummed.
- 1:02:07And then of course, you know Marvin doesn't get his teeth
- 1:02:11work done either. Yeah, and.
- 1:02:13Everybody's home, and it's not night time.
- 1:02:15So Brooke arrives at the dentist's office.
- 1:02:18Yeah, walking around the office looking for him.
- 1:02:20And then she hears some opera music down the hall, so she
- 1:02:23wanders into the room and it's the opera themed.
- 1:02:26Room. Yeah, La Scala themed after like
- 1:02:29a specific opera hall in Italy. Operatori #4 yeah, it's a very,
- 1:02:35it's a very well done one. He's like wearing a fucking tux
- 1:02:38and everything. He's in full cosplay for this.
- 1:02:41And then he says something that she reacts to perfectly.
- 1:02:44Like you said, all of the acting in this movie is a plus because
- 1:02:48he goes, I wanted this to be a surprise for our anniversary.
- 1:02:51And she's like, so our reservation.
- 1:02:55Yeah, we're going to be away, Yeah.
- 1:02:58And he's like, sit down, I want you to try it out.
- 1:03:00And she's like, seriously, did you did you take your pills?
- 1:03:03Did you take too many pills? And he's like, no, just sit.
- 1:03:07And as soon as she does, he ties her by the neck to the chair and
- 1:03:12gives her, in his words, just enough nitrous.
- 1:03:15Yeah, except he fucking, which turns the dial in that thing all
- 1:03:18the way up, just enough to not kill her.
- 1:03:21Yeah, but also, like, she's still very much alert.
- 1:03:25And he, he says he can see what they've all become.
- 1:03:31And then he starts pulling out her teeth.
- 1:03:33Yeah, he's like every time he's doing all of these things in
- 1:03:37people's mouths, he's just having these visions of their
- 1:03:40whole mouth being decayed. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:44Like you remember the guy who sold Andy's mom the first Good
- 1:03:50Guy doll? Yeah, very first Child's Play
- 1:03:52movie like that. Like his teeth.
- 1:03:54Yeah, but worse. Worse.
- 1:03:56Yeah, his. Teeth and Art the Clown's teeth.
- 1:03:59Had. Nasty decayed babies.
- 1:04:01Yep, that's exactly the baby, right?
- 1:04:03There. Yeah.
- 1:04:04So we have a voiceover at his house, and he's talking about
- 1:04:07how he never uses the pool, but he had it built because it was
- 1:04:10important to Brooke and she uses it all the time.
- 1:04:13And then we see her on the bed and she's got a terribly swollen
- 1:04:16face. Yeah, she's tied up, she's
- 1:04:18gagged, she can't talk. And it's, yeah, it's a fucking
- 1:04:24upsetting scene here. So it cuts to the next day.
- 1:04:28We see jars of what looks like maybe baby food on the counter
- 1:04:31and his empty pill bottles. Brooke is on is on a chair by
- 1:04:36the pool and she's tied up and there's like a sun hat covering
- 1:04:39her face. It looks like if you because
- 1:04:41it's like a clear tubing that he used to tie her up.
- 1:04:44So it's not immediately obvious that that's what's happening.
- 1:04:46So if you just got a glimpse of her, you just think she's like
- 1:04:48sleeping by the. Yeah, and Matt, the pool guy is
- 1:04:50back there doing his pool work and he's just, you know, taking
- 1:04:53glances he's over there at or he's not noticing anything yet.
- 1:04:56The police arrive, and they're asking if they know if he knows
- 1:04:59anything about the robberies in the neighborhood or about the
- 1:05:02shooting that happened next door the previous day.
- 1:05:04And he's like, no, no, don't know anything about it.
- 1:05:07And they're like, what about your wife?
- 1:05:08And he goes out. Well, she's still asleep.
- 1:05:10And like Ken Forres, like must be nice.
- 1:05:14So while all that's happening, the pool guy is out there
- 1:05:17cleaning the pool within that, and he ends up scooping out one
- 1:05:20of the tongues or one of the tongues Brooke's.
- 1:05:23Tongue, yeah. So he's like, what the fuck is
- 1:05:26this? So he goes over there to check
- 1:05:27on Brooke and he pulls the hat back and she's alive still and.
- 1:05:31She looks they did really great makeup work on her 'cause not
- 1:05:34only did they make her face really swollen, but they also
- 1:05:37like did a good job of like making her eyes look like really
- 1:05:39bruised and sunken in. Yeah, and the teeth and
- 1:05:42everything. Yeah teeth are all gone, but for
- 1:05:45the front ones it looks like they're shaved to points, which
- 1:05:47is what makes me think maybe she did have veneers in the front
- 1:05:50teeth cuz that's your teeth get shaved down from.
- 1:05:53Yeah, yeah, more crowns. That's what happens with crowns,
- 1:05:56too. And there's, like, stitches
- 1:05:59where her tongue had been cut. Yeah.
- 1:06:02And she's, like, trying to get Matt to look.
- 1:06:05Yeah. And she's trying to, like,
- 1:06:06gesture to Matt, like, look behind you.
- 1:06:08But he doesn't until it's too late.
- 1:06:10And Alan is stabbing him. And he goes, please, Mr.
- 1:06:13Feinstein. And he goes, It's Doctor
- 1:06:15Feinstein. And that's my wife.
- 1:06:18Yeah, I love that shot, the way that it's shot overhead of him,
- 1:06:22just like chasing down the pole, just slashing him and.
- 1:06:25I feel like honestly this feels like the most I've ever seen her
- 1:06:29face and I don't know if it's cuz of our DVD version if it's
- 1:06:32different in where we've watched it streaming before cuz I don't
- 1:06:35feel like I remember it being. Watched on blurry ones too.
- 1:06:39When we bought this, we did we. Watched the second one on
- 1:06:41Blu-ray. I thought we watched the first
- 1:06:42one. Too.
- 1:06:42No, we watched the second one. OK, yeah, I guess you're right.
- 1:06:46So. So it feels like there were more
- 1:06:48shots of that. It could be, yeah.
- 1:06:51Or like a like a prolonged shot, yeah.
- 1:06:54I don't know, it could be. Cuz I was like prepared to like
- 1:06:58try and take notes of it cuz I was like, this flash comes by
- 1:07:00really quick and we've seen this movie a few times.
- 1:07:02So yeah, I don't know if my brain just cut it short or if it
- 1:07:06like is shorter on streaming it. Had been a while since we
- 1:07:09watched it. We watched it when we first
- 1:07:10moved in here, which was three years from now.
- 1:07:12So I know it's the special effects guys were talking about
- 1:07:16how they did that shot of him when he's slashing him from the
- 1:07:19overhead shot and like the blood shooting out the way it is, it
- 1:07:23was cool. So they gave the guy a sponge
- 1:07:26and they doused it with fake blood.
- 1:07:28So he was holding it underneath his neck the entire time.
- 1:07:31And anytime he would do the splashing thing, he would
- 1:07:33squeeze in someone would just. Shoot out.
- 1:07:35Cool. Yeah, that's that's a cool way
- 1:07:37to do that. Honestly, hearing how that would
- 1:07:40have played it, like just hearing that would think that's
- 1:07:42not going to look good. But then as they're describing
- 1:07:45it and watching it play out, it was really like the blood
- 1:07:48splatters. Perfect.
- 1:07:49Some of the best practical effects are done when you're on
- 1:07:52a major budget and you have to film things a certain way and
- 1:07:55you have to come up with like, OK, we're going to hide this
- 1:07:58just the right way. You mean like a like a no
- 1:08:00budget? Yeah, OK.
- 1:08:01You said a major budget. Oh, minor, like a majorly short
- 1:08:06budget. OK, yeah, I know what I was
- 1:08:08trying to say in my head and I did not say that out loud
- 1:08:10correctly. I was going to say no, you're
- 1:08:11right. Major budgets do good special
- 1:08:14effects. But no, I think that's a very
- 1:08:16true thing too. Just like low budget but finding
- 1:08:19creative ways to get the outcome.
- 1:08:21Yeah, sometimes it's more realistic effects.
- 1:08:24Yeah, like it's necessity is the mother of invention.
- 1:08:27Exactly. Yeah.
- 1:08:29All right. So yeah, the pool guy is now
- 1:08:32officially dead, so he's back at the office.
- 1:08:35Paula is annoyed that Alan is late.
- 1:08:37She doesn't care about having the music.
- 1:08:39She's actually kind of fucking rude, Yeah.
- 1:08:42Like, I do not like Paula. I don't think she deserved to
- 1:08:45die, but I don't think I'd want to be around her.
- 1:08:47Yeah, she's not exactly nice. I mean, she didn't really ask
- 1:08:50for this appointment, but she could have refused.
- 1:08:53She's awesome. She's having a really bad day.
- 1:08:55She was like, I think Dennis shot the dog.
- 1:08:57He waited until I was attached to the thing.
- 1:09:00So everybody in this neighborhood just has terrible
- 1:09:02fucking marriage. Who the fuck is Dennis?
- 1:09:04I think her husband. We never even see him.
- 1:09:06I thought she was single. No, I was just going based off
- 1:09:09of context. OK, I maybe that, yeah, that
- 1:09:12would be fucking shitty. If if you're married to somebody
- 1:09:15that you suspect would have done something like that, get the
- 1:09:17fuck out of there. Yeah, it's a There's a lot of,
- 1:09:21like, social commentary underlying this that's kind of
- 1:09:24terrifying on its own. Yeah.
- 1:09:26But you know what else is terrifying?
- 1:09:28What? The way Alan just starts
- 1:09:30grinding at her tooth. Oh, yeah.
- 1:09:32And Jessica's like stop, stop, stop.
- 1:09:36OK, so like, yeah, he takes her back to the music room.
- 1:09:39Or is it jazz room? I don't know.
- 1:09:40But she hates the music. She's like cut that shit.
- 1:09:42Out. To be fair, if I was put in the
- 1:09:43jazz room, I'd like I would say, can you?
- 1:09:45Not really. Yeah, not jazz.
- 1:09:49No. As Angela says in the office,
- 1:09:52just play the right notes. Yeah, OK.
- 1:09:56But yeah, he's like, all right, we're gonna just fucking do some
- 1:09:59work here. And then he takes this giant
- 1:10:02drill. It's not a normal one.
- 1:10:05That's. My medicine alarm.
- 1:10:08Do we need to pause for you to do your medicine?
- 1:10:10OK, We'll be right back. OK.
- 1:10:14Yeah, so Jessica's like a let's not.
- 1:10:18Do this. It's like completely eviscerate
- 1:10:20this woman's tooth. Yeah, he's literally grinding it
- 1:10:24to dust. This is the most upsetting one
- 1:10:27to me because you see it's a big ass drill and it's just, it's
- 1:10:31straight up just pulverizing this tooth.
- 1:10:34Yeah, it just, and it's just meant to be a filling that needs
- 1:10:37to be redone. You can even see the silver from
- 1:10:40where it was before. It doesn't even really need to
- 1:10:42be done I don't think. It just needs to be cleaned
- 1:10:46maybe. Yeah, because I am destroying
- 1:10:48it. Yeah, and so Jessica, she does
- 1:10:51the right thing and she snaps him out of it, takes him out in
- 1:10:55the hall, and he's not OK with it.
- 1:10:58He's like, don't you ever do that again?
- 1:11:00Yeah, he's like, are you going to tell me how to run my
- 1:11:02business? And then he gets distracted by
- 1:11:05something else, so she runs in there.
- 1:11:09And she lets Paula leave. Yes, yeah.
- 1:11:11She's like, you need to run, you need to get out of here.
- 1:11:14So she does. And then he comes back.
- 1:11:16He's like, where'd Paula go? And she's like if she just
- 1:11:19decided she didn't want to and can.
- 1:11:21You imagine the state of her mouth that like, what would you
- 1:11:23do if you left the dentist's office with that jaggedy ass
- 1:11:26mess in the back of your mouth? Go to an emergency dentist.
- 1:11:31That's what you do. You gotta get that.
- 1:11:32Yeah, you can't that like there's definitely a raw nerd
- 1:11:36exposed there. Yeah, no, Yeah.
- 1:11:38He did give her the numbing stuff before.
- 1:11:41And even that he did that in a painful way, like he did it
- 1:11:44intentionally painful. Yeah.
- 1:11:46And so once that numbness is gone, you're just going to be in
- 1:11:50a world of hurt. Yeah.
- 1:11:51Yeah. But he's like, what happened to
- 1:11:54her? Why'd she go?
- 1:11:54And she's like, well, she just decided to go, and who can
- 1:11:57blame? Her.
- 1:11:58And he's like, and you let her. And she's like, yeah.
- 1:12:02And then he just scolds her. He's like, you've not been
- 1:12:05professional. I've not been too satisfied with
- 1:12:07your professionalism in this workplace.
- 1:12:10And you're also questioning me. Your job is to keep the person
- 1:12:14here. And then she's like, are you
- 1:12:15blaming me about this? He's like, not only am I blaming
- 1:12:19you, I'm firing you. And then she's like, all right,
- 1:12:21well, I know about the pantyhose.
- 1:12:25And then, yeah, she pulls them out.
- 1:12:27And then he has like, a little panic attack.
- 1:12:30He's like Jessica. It's nothing happened, I swear.
- 1:12:33And she's like, I'm reporting you.
- 1:12:36And then he's like, I don't think so.
- 1:12:39And he chokes her with her nylons.
- 1:12:41Yep. So he pulls her back in there,
- 1:12:43they have a good little struggle and she almost gets them.
- 1:12:45She takes the needle like the syringe with another thing of
- 1:12:49the numbing stuff, and just before she's about to stab him,
- 1:12:52he chokes her out. Yeah, and the unfortunate thing
- 1:12:55is that even cheap nylons are going to choke you out pretty
- 1:12:58efficiently. But you know, you know, Steve
- 1:13:01didn't get April Rain. No cheap nylons.
- 1:13:03No, not at all. He didn't get those legs inside
- 1:13:07the egg. 3 for a dollar. From Walmart.
- 1:13:09That didn't happen. That's not how Mark Ruffalo
- 1:13:12rolls. So we cut over to the cops.
- 1:13:17They find the bullets, the the shot that killed the dog and
- 1:13:23they do some forensics on it and they find out what type of gun
- 1:13:26that is and they do a scan of all of the people that would
- 1:13:30have had the gun in the area. And Alan is the only person
- 1:13:34around here that has that gun that matches.
- 1:13:37Pretty interesting. Back at the dentist's office,
- 1:13:40Sarah's about to go back for her appointment, finally
- 1:13:43rescheduled. And then Marv comes in and gets
- 1:13:45in front of her again, and Candy's like she's been looking
- 1:13:49forward to this for two years. And so I was like, hey, Monday.
- 1:13:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:13:55So yeah, he finally gets his own little room.
- 1:13:59He's he's in a rainforest. Yeah, so he's getting set up
- 1:14:03back there. And he's basically telling Alan
- 1:14:08that he is, in fact, blackmailing him.
- 1:14:09He's like, straight up, you are gonna owe a lot of money.
- 1:14:12You have been very fraudulent with your claims.
- 1:14:15You've spent a lot of money on your wife.
- 1:14:17I can see that. And then Alan's just kind of
- 1:14:21like he goes, listen, it'll be a lot cheaper to deal with me than
- 1:14:24my supervisor. See, here's the thing.
- 1:14:27He is in a good position to squeeze somebody like this, and
- 1:14:31I get it. He's got all the details.
- 1:14:33Yeah, so he's asking for a favor here.
- 1:14:35But as soon as Alan gets him in the chair there, that's his
- 1:14:39moment to be like, all right, you're going to fucking do that
- 1:14:42shit right, or I'm going to do this right now.
- 1:14:46And he might not keep his word, but at the same time you have
- 1:14:51the very real threat of having your mouth fucked up right there
- 1:14:54and. Because Marv is not smart about
- 1:14:55this because he's like basically getting the best work that he
- 1:14:58can. Because he's like, I'll laser
- 1:14:59bond these back. Like he's got some crowns that I
- 1:15:02guess fell out of Marvin's mouth.
- 1:15:04Yeah, yeah. And so once he gets him in
- 1:15:06there, he, he's just like, you're just, you're going to
- 1:15:10keep asking for things. You're never going to get
- 1:15:12better. And so he puts the little, he
- 1:15:16gives them the gas and cranks it up a little bit too much and
- 1:15:20then puts in the little jaw opener thing and does it until
- 1:15:23his jaw basically cracks open. Yeah, he like, Oh my God, he
- 1:15:27puts it in there and he's just wrenching it over and over again
- 1:15:30and it's just, oh, it's just getting so big and bloody and
- 1:15:33it's just so nasty. You know who would appreciate
- 1:15:35this guy's style? Rusty Nail.
- 1:15:38Oh yeah, he would. Yeah.
- 1:15:42He's like, I prefer to use my bare hands to RIP off jowls.
- 1:15:45Jowls. Yeah, so he ties him up and he's
- 1:15:51just like trying to stab at his teeth and he ends up like his
- 1:15:56tongue. Yeah, he's like drilling at his
- 1:15:57tongue. Which?
- 1:15:59Yeah, he is fucking him up and he's back there screaming.
- 1:16:02And while all this is happening, we got a dental salesman that
- 1:16:07has come into the phone office. He's.
- 1:16:09Fair to sell like supplies. And he's like, can I speak with
- 1:16:13Doctor Feinstein? And he's like, well, I actually
- 1:16:14deal with all the salesman. Yeah, she's the office manager.
- 1:16:17Yeah, she's office manager. And while that's happening, you
- 1:16:20can hear Goldblum back there screaming.
- 1:16:22But then the guy's like, there's always one screamer, you know
- 1:16:25what I mean? So like, you can explain it
- 1:16:26away, like, oh, people are just afraid of the dentists.
- 1:16:30So meanwhile at the house, the cops are back there.
- 1:16:33They find Matt's body out back and then as they go inside and
- 1:16:38look around and they find Brooke tied up.
- 1:16:40Still alive. Still alive, everything hasn't
- 1:16:46passed out from shock or anything.
- 1:16:48I feel bad for her. Yeah, I think she she may have
- 1:16:51gone through that process again and again.
- 1:16:53Already. But yeah, she's kind of in that
- 1:16:55luminal space of like, her body is adapting enough to try and
- 1:16:58survive, but not so much to like let her sleep through her pain
- 1:17:02or anything. Yeah, so back at the dentist's
- 1:17:05office, Karen is looking around and she finds Jessica's back
- 1:17:09still there because she asked She's what happened?
- 1:17:11Where is. Jessica and he's like, I fired
- 1:17:13her and she goes, we're already short staffed.
- 1:17:16Yeah. And she's like, don't we need to
- 1:17:17close down for the day? And then, you know, he has his
- 1:17:20own little power trip moment. He's like, this is my office.
- 1:17:22Yeah. Basically so she is immediately
- 1:17:26suspicious and when she goes into the rainforest room she
- 1:17:28finds Marv and she's like Oh no. And then Alan attacks her and
- 1:17:32because Karen was the one he liked more, he's like this will
- 1:17:37be nice and simple and he just shoots an air bubble.
- 1:17:40Yeah, like, he just, like, takes the needle and shoots it in her
- 1:17:43neck. And like, he's like, he
- 1:17:44explains. So calm.
- 1:17:46He's like, all right, so I'm just gonna do this, I'm gonna
- 1:17:47shoot this in your neck and it's gonna just send air bubbles up
- 1:17:50into your brain and you're gonna die.
- 1:17:52Yep. And then?
- 1:17:53He does that thing, except I always thought it was like the
- 1:17:55heart. I think it could be anywhere,
- 1:17:58yeah. Well, I thought it was like when
- 1:18:00the air hits the heart that it's the problem.
- 1:18:02I don't know. You know what I don't know?
- 1:18:07I only know this because it was a death method used in Oh Fuck I
- 1:18:14can't remember the writer's name.
- 1:18:15Not RL Stein but the other spooky teen writer back in the
- 1:18:20day. He had this book where basically
- 1:18:22this girl had to solve her own murder and she ends up saving
- 1:18:25like one of her friends or her brother or something by putting
- 1:18:29her spirit into the air bubble that gets injected in the vein
- 1:18:33and. It's it's a.
- 1:18:36Kind of a fever dream of a book. As peaceful as it sounds, it's
- 1:18:40actually a very violent death. Here too because.
- 1:18:42Karen just collapses on the ground and just, like, seizes.
- 1:18:45Yeah, basically. So in the front office, Candy is
- 1:18:48like, hey, we still have Sarah here.
- 1:18:52We still have Jessica and Karen back there.
- 1:18:53Can I just send her back there? And, you know, they'll get her
- 1:18:56prepped and everything. And then he's like, yeah, sure,
- 1:18:58go ahead and send her back. And The thing is, like, the
- 1:19:01whole time I'm feeling so bad for Sarah every time she's not
- 1:19:04getting her braces off. But then I have this competing
- 1:19:08sense of relief, Yeah, that she's not walking into this
- 1:19:11danger. It's all fine.
- 1:19:12So it's like back and forth. But we see her, and he's
- 1:19:15finishing up taking off her braces, and she's real happy.
- 1:19:19And she smiles at him, and we're like, OK, cool, maybe this is
- 1:19:22going to be nice. And then he goes.
- 1:19:23Your teeth are never gonna be as nice as they are now.
- 1:19:25It's all downhill from here. Just he he took the braces off
- 1:19:281st so she's having the happy. Moment.
- 1:19:30Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:19:32And then yeah, no, he's like, yeah, it's all downhill.
- 1:19:35You're not gonna take care of them.
- 1:19:36They're just gonna decay. And it's just all gonna turn to
- 1:19:38shoot like everything else. And he pulls out a gun and she's
- 1:19:42like. And so she runs and she runs
- 1:19:45out. Nobody's out there.
- 1:19:47Where the fuck did Candy go? Where did candy go?
- 1:19:50Cuz she's gonna pop back up here in a minute, but she's gone for
- 1:19:54all of this. Yeah, you're right.
- 1:19:55I didn't even think about. That Yeah.
- 1:19:57So it's basically this cat and mouse scene where Alan is trying
- 1:20:00to find her, and she is at one point hiding in a closet and she
- 1:20:04sees Jessica's body and she, you know, freaks out but manages to
- 1:20:09sneak out while Alan's looking elsewhere.
- 1:20:12And then she sneaks to a different room.
- 1:20:13Unfortunately, it's the rainforest room.
- 1:20:15So she finds Karen's body, and she finds Marv tied up.
- 1:20:19So she unties Marv. At that moment, Alan comes in,
- 1:20:23but Marv bodies Alan. Yeah, he's just straight up
- 1:20:27tackles and yeah, yeah, at least he's fighting, you know what I
- 1:20:31mean? He's helping her.
- 1:20:32Yeah, he's just like I should have let you go for skit.
- 1:20:37So he I guess off screen takes care of Marvin or Marv and then
- 1:20:42ends up with him getting Sarah in the opera room.
- 1:20:46Yeah, and she's like, please, I promise I will brush three times
- 1:20:49a day and no cane. He goes like to pinky square.
- 1:20:53Do you say pretty please or something?
- 1:20:55Like that he, he makes her, like, say it like five times.
- 1:20:57Yeah, I swear, three times a day, no candy.
- 1:21:00And then he's like, all right. All right.
- 1:21:02And cops come in, He has already left.
- 1:21:04Sarah is fully dramatized. And we see like that shot that
- 1:21:09you mentioned at the beginning where he's just driving along
- 1:21:12listening to his opera and there's a cop car right next to
- 1:21:14him, so. It's, I love that shot.
- 1:21:16It's so cool. Yeah, he's just driving.
- 1:21:18And then the cop car just like turns.
- 1:21:20Oh my God, it's so awesome. So Sarah's crying, and the cops
- 1:21:24are like, do you have any idea of where he's gone?
- 1:21:27And she was like, I have no idea.
- 1:21:28I have no idea. And Candy is like, completely
- 1:21:32bad because she was gone for all of this.
- 1:21:33She doesn't see what happens. So she's just like, it's such a
- 1:21:36shame. Beautiful marriage, a kind
- 1:21:40doctor, a wonderful teacher. And Sarah goes, well, you just
- 1:21:44shot. I almost.
- 1:21:48Died. Ken Forrey is like, wait a
- 1:21:50minute, teacher. And then they're like, OK, we
- 1:21:53think we might know where he's at now.
- 1:21:55So it cuts to him. He's giving instructions to one
- 1:21:59of his students and he's like, OK, He's like, I need you to do
- 1:22:02an extraction. Well, first he's like, go ahead
- 1:22:05and like drill or something and they're like, well, shouldn't we
- 1:22:07give the patient anesthesia? And he goes no.
- 1:22:09He is actually drilling this person.
- 1:22:11First he's drilling the fucking teeth and then like they're in
- 1:22:14pain. Yeah.
- 1:22:14And then, yeah, he's having that conversation with the students.
- 1:22:18He's like, actually, you know what?
- 1:22:19Like do an extraction. And then he turns around to all
- 1:22:22of the students. He's like everybody.
- 1:22:24Everybody start extracting. And at first a couple of people
- 1:22:28laughed, thinking it's a joke, and then he pulls out the gun
- 1:22:30and they're like. Yeah, he's like, I'm not fucking
- 1:22:33kidding. Get to extracting now.
- 1:22:35I wish we. Had seen like one student like
- 1:22:38be a little bit more eager than the rest.
- 1:22:39Yeah, you feel. Like all right.
- 1:22:41Could be Jack Nicholson. Except it's like actually Jack.
- 1:22:46Nicholson Yeah, no, yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:22:48He's like or like him today and he's like, hey, I finally made
- 1:22:51it to dental. School.
- 1:22:52Yeah, yeah. So he right before he actually
- 1:22:56makes him do that though, the cops bust in and they hold him
- 1:22:59at gunpoint, but he manages to take one of them hostage.
- 1:23:04Yeah, he takes one of them hostage.
- 1:23:05And then he starts seeing all of the students and patients as,
- 1:23:08like, his victims of his little spree.
- 1:23:11Yeah. And he shoots at one of them
- 1:23:13that he thinks it's Matt, but it's actually just a patient,
- 1:23:16and he gets shot in the leg. So at least he's not hurt.
- 1:23:18Yeah. And in the commotion, he manages
- 1:23:20to run off. And I guess the dental school is
- 1:23:23attached to the performing arts hall.
- 1:23:26It's. Like an auditorium there, which
- 1:23:28isn't too weird to think about if you're at a school.
- 1:23:32No, it's not weird that they have both, it's just weird that
- 1:23:35they would be next. To connected, Yeah, you're
- 1:23:37right, yeah. And there's like a student in
- 1:23:40there, an opera student who. Sing an opera to an empty
- 1:23:43auditorium. It's.
- 1:23:44Probably just the rehearsal space.
- 1:23:46Probably, but she's got the spotlight on her and everything.
- 1:23:49This is not weird at all to me. This, No, this makes sense,
- 1:23:51yeah. No, he's like mesmerized by the
- 1:23:54opera. Yeah, that's But then he starts
- 1:23:57seeing her as Brooke and he like, goes up and he like
- 1:24:01touches her and she like, startles and he drops the gun
- 1:24:05and drops to his knees and starts crying.
- 1:24:07And that's when the cops come in.
- 1:24:09And then he still sees the student as Brooke, except now
- 1:24:11Brooke's laughing because he got caught.
- 1:24:13Yeah, Yep. And it ends with him where we
- 1:24:17first saw him in like the White Room, but it's him being taken
- 1:24:20to like a psych ward. Yeah, well, it's time for his
- 1:24:24his appointment and he's saying no, no, no.
- 1:24:27And it's a dental visit, except the dental hygienist is a very
- 1:24:32gummy broke. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:36And I think that this is all on his head.
- 1:24:37Yeah, absolutely. Because we get the dentist too.
- 1:24:41Yeah. And he very much is a free man.
- 1:24:44So I don't remember how he gets out of that situation though.
- 1:24:47I wouldn't say Freeman, I'd say fugitive.
- 1:24:49He's a fugitive, yeah, but he's free.
- 1:24:51He's not locked up. Yeah or anything.
- 1:24:54So, yeah. But yeah, that's how it ends.
- 1:24:58So how do you feel after talking about it?
- 1:25:00I will bump it up to an 8.75 because this is a solid fucking
- 1:25:04movie. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:25:06I'm going to keep mine another nine because I still feel like
- 1:25:08that's right. But I love this movie.
- 1:25:10I think it's super solid. It's effective horror.
- 1:25:14And really, when you want horror, when you're watching
- 1:25:17horror, you want it to be something that makes you feel
- 1:25:20uncomfortable, that's effective and scary.
- 1:25:23And this is one that I think actually achieves while also
- 1:25:26having a good story. So our final average is 8.875.
- 1:25:32OK. So that's good, real good.
- 1:25:35I think one thing that I might change, we don't have to show
- 1:25:42the dog death. No, it's never necessary.
- 1:25:45It really all it did was give him a bullet to track him down,
- 1:25:50but you could have killed somebody with it.
- 1:25:53Yeah, you could have done it differently.
- 1:25:55Yeah, it didn't have to be a dog.
- 1:25:57Yeah, and we didn't have to see the dog's body go body.
- 1:26:00Yeah, also that. So yeah, you know, now I'm
- 1:26:05picturing like the beginning of Return of the Living Dead, like
- 1:26:08where they're like trying to go through.
- 1:26:09The cadavers. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:13OK, So what do we think Talia thought of this?
- 1:26:18I think Talia liked it. I think she was put off by the
- 1:26:21dog death though. She's always put off by the dog
- 1:26:24death. She is, she very much relates to
- 1:26:27the dental trauma with this because she had part of her jaw
- 1:26:31removed. So, you know, that's always a
- 1:26:34scary thing for her. But the people that she saw were
- 1:26:36super nice. Yeah, at one point she was like
- 1:26:38looking at us like guys and we're like, we know that they
- 1:26:41were much kinder to you at Med Vet.
- 1:26:42But that's why it's so scary, because, you know, it could have
- 1:26:45been this guy. But she was, the whole time, she
- 1:26:48was really playful. She was showing off her Tommy.
- 1:26:51She was she was feeling this. So I think Talia would give it
- 1:26:55and mine if it were not for the dog death. 88 Yeah, because of
- 1:26:59that automatic point deduction, Zoe's ultimate warrior.
- 1:27:08Let's see. Not Sarah cuz Sarah saved her
- 1:27:13life by agreeing to not eat a specific type of food.
- 1:27:17Yeah, you're right. You know what Ken 4A cause Ken
- 1:27:214A pulled that classic an old hand at this.
- 1:27:25I'm so unbothered by death that I'm eating at a crime scene.
- 1:27:28You're right, You know, I didn't even talk about it, but my
- 1:27:31favorite thing from him in this movie is like, all right, so go
- 1:27:35over there, interview the people, see what happened with
- 1:27:38the dog death, try and find the robber cop stuff.
- 1:27:42Yeah. It feels like that was like a
- 1:27:44note to improv the line. And yeah, just cop stuff.
- 1:27:47He's. Like read it out loud.
- 1:27:48Yeah, Cop. Stuff, but it worked like God
- 1:27:50damn it, Ken. Perfect.
- 1:27:54Yeah, it's like, you know what? Damn it, I'll accept.
- 1:27:58It better than we wrote. I loved it.
- 1:28:00It was so funny. So yeah, I agree with you.
- 1:28:03Yeah. Let's make it again.
- 1:28:05I like how we just are putting Ken for Ray instead of the
- 1:28:07character's name. We they never say Detective
- 1:28:10Gibbs in the movie that's. Just I think they probably did
- 1:28:12at some. Point maybe one time, I don't
- 1:28:14know. I just remember like detective.
- 1:28:17That's all I remember. OK, well, we know who Zoe's
- 1:28:20Ultimate Warrior was. Yeah, but who did you relate to?
- 1:28:23I see we didn't get anybody that's like actually like scared
- 1:28:28of the dentist but has like. April was, she was very nervous,
- 1:28:33so. No, my thing with the dentist
- 1:28:36was I had to have a lot of trips with the dentist because I had a
- 1:28:40very terrible mouth growing up. Just like it was all fucked up
- 1:28:44in all kinds of ways. I remember like the dentist
- 1:28:46actually looked at my mouth one time and said I've never seen
- 1:28:49this before. It's like it was bad.
- 1:28:54I think they even raided out of 10/1 time.
- 1:28:57It was an AI think. A scale of bad.
- 1:29:01Yeah, I wish you. Were the.
- 1:29:03Tongue. I had to have all kinds of like
- 1:29:05dental surgery. I had a tooth that grew under my
- 1:29:07tongue and it had to be surgically removed.
- 1:29:10What did I marry? Somebody with fucked up teeth,
- 1:29:14but they're in like a, I'm not going to say they're good, but
- 1:29:19they're in an OK space now. Like, you know, nice.
- 1:29:22Smile. Well, thank you.
- 1:29:23But there's some jank for sure. But there's nowhere near as much
- 1:29:27jank as there should be or would have been if I had never touched
- 1:29:32my teeth. As God intended.
- 1:29:34Seriously, Like I've got some old pictures of my fucked up
- 1:29:38teeth, like my old fucked up smile.
- 1:29:40And it was bad. So.
- 1:29:42Yeah. So I didn't get that person in
- 1:29:46this movie. You know, somebody that's like a
- 1:29:48repeat customer. Customer.
- 1:29:50Yeah. Like I think that that would
- 1:29:51have been kind of cool. Like somebody's like, all right,
- 1:29:53I know, you know. Yeah, my teeth are fucked up.
- 1:29:56I got another cavity. Actually, no, I'm gonna pick a
- 1:30:00relate one for you. OK.
- 1:30:03Because I've been reminding you and over and over and over again
- 1:30:06that you need to schedule your six month cleaning.
- 1:30:08So I think you're gonna be Paula.
- 1:30:10OK, sure. Yeah, I'll be Paula.
- 1:30:13I've had my teeth destroyed like that before too, man.
- 1:30:17I've had just about anything you can do, and they're done.
- 1:30:21Yep. So, all right.
- 1:30:22What about you? Who'd you relate to?
- 1:30:27We didn't have the person for you that came in there with like
- 1:30:30the impeccable teeth, you know what I mean?
- 1:30:33Actually, probably I would relate to April because there
- 1:30:36really wasn't much. I've got a little bit of a
- 1:30:38shadow but it was the same thing where like no I have a doctor
- 1:30:41not in active psychosis and he was like if you brush and floss
- 1:30:45it probably will be fine on its own.
- 1:30:47Oh dude, let me give you all some real Travis experience
- 1:30:50dental. And this is like, within the
- 1:30:52past, like, few years, my dentist sometimes would be like,
- 1:30:55that's a shallow cavity. Yeah.
- 1:30:58You want to do this without any numbing?
- 1:31:00I'm like, I'll fucking trust you, doc, you know?
- 1:31:02And then, like, I've had several teeth done without getting any
- 1:31:06numbing. They just drill my tooth without
- 1:31:08anything. Yeah.
- 1:31:10And if it's very surface level, it's not comfortable.
- 1:31:12But you know, the numbing sucks too.
- 1:31:14It doesn't help that you also have that ginger thing where you
- 1:31:17take more anaesthesia than like a normal person to get all the
- 1:31:21way numb. I guess, yeah, I might have
- 1:31:23that. You know, you've told me before
- 1:31:25that they've had to give you multiple shots and you can still
- 1:31:27feel it. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:30It's never really a comfortable experience for me.
- 1:31:32Like I've never truly feel 100% non.
- 1:31:35I didn't even think about that, but yeah.
- 1:31:37Yeah, yeah. No, cuz like the the shadow
- 1:31:41thing isn't really necessarily a cavity.
- 1:31:43It's just like, hey, you have the potential to get a cavity.
- 1:31:45Yeah. So the fact that he was gonna
- 1:31:46drill a hole into her mouth. The whole filling, yeah, it's
- 1:31:50very fucked up. OK, so those are their people
- 1:31:53then. OK, OK, so time for reviews.
- 1:31:58No. No tagline.
- 1:32:00Dream SQL. And Dream SQL, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:32:04OK, OK. Dream SQL.
- 1:32:05So they do kind of like give you room for this here cuz yeah
- 1:32:09you're right, We do have some unreliable narrator stuff.
- 1:32:14I think everything at the end happened except for him getting
- 1:32:17carried away and put into a pure white room with his wife.
- 1:32:20Yeah, I do want to have broken the sequel I.
- 1:32:26Want to? Get her revenge.
- 1:32:27I feel like she needs to, yeah, she needs to be back.
- 1:32:30And she's got, like, fake teeth now.
- 1:32:34Yeah. Or maybe she like embraces the
- 1:32:36gummed tooth look. No, I like to imagine that she
- 1:32:42again to reference old boy, one tooth for every year of my life,
- 1:32:45but it's one tooth for every tooth of my life.
- 1:32:48And she does that to him and. I think she gets him and gets
- 1:32:54her revenge. Yeah, she's going to get her
- 1:32:57revenge somehow, some way, but I think she's going to do more
- 1:33:02fucked up things too on top of it.
- 1:33:04See, I think a good thing and this kind of falls in line with
- 1:33:09how the actual sequel plays out. But like, and if this isn't
- 1:33:13exactly how the sequel goes, like just please, I'm not trying
- 1:33:16to steal it. This is just out of my head.
- 1:33:19But like he escapes and he's trying to build like a life away
- 1:33:24from all that be private. But when he's there, he she
- 1:33:30arrives and she's playing it cool too.
- 1:33:33And she like, she's trying to like put herself in his life to
- 1:33:40try and get close and get revenge.
- 1:33:42And he's having to try and balance his old life and his new
- 1:33:47life did not have other people realize that he's had this so.
- 1:33:50Almost like a spy versus spy situation.
- 1:33:52Kind of yeah. And you know, like in the off
- 1:33:55hours when people aren't noticing or even, you know,
- 1:33:58behind closes doors at the office and shit, like she'll be
- 1:34:01there. Like she applies for the job
- 1:34:02there and she becomes like a hygienist or something, you
- 1:34:06know? I mean like he can't call out
- 1:34:08that he knows her. And then she's not qualified.
- 1:34:10Yeah, she's like, well, if you do that, I'm going to blow the
- 1:34:13whistle on the entire thing here.
- 1:34:15So she is forced to be in the point.
- 1:34:16We're waiting to see what she's got planned for him, yeah.
- 1:34:19I like that, but she like, you know, at first she plays it off
- 1:34:22cool, you know, like, oh, don't worry, like, you know, if you
- 1:34:24play nice, I'll play nice, you know, and she like maybe tries
- 1:34:27to give some like, well, like, like romance manipulation here,
- 1:34:32like, you know, I still have feelings for you and stuff like
- 1:34:34that. And because she's back and he's
- 1:34:37getting paranoid, he's starting to spiral again.
- 1:34:39Yeah, the one thing I do want to definitely keep from the actual
- 1:34:42sequel is that one scene. You know which one I'm talking
- 1:34:46about. The real fucked up mouth
- 1:34:48torture. Yes, yes, absolutely.
- 1:34:50Yeah. I'm not spoiling anything
- 1:34:51because I know we'll talk about it eventually, and that is one
- 1:34:53of the gnarliest things I've ever seen in a horror movie.
- 1:34:57I think one other thing that I would like to keep from the
- 1:34:59sequel is Clint Howard. Fuck, I forgot he's in.
- 1:35:03It Yeah. So we got to have Clint Howard
- 1:35:05on board for this, too, Clint. Howard yeah, always.
- 1:35:08We'll find the boy for him to fit.
- 1:35:09He'll be there. Yeah.
- 1:35:11OK, cool. So that's a nice little way out
- 1:35:13for a sequel there. All right, All right, now
- 1:35:16tagline. Let's see if we can actually do
- 1:35:18something better this time. Do we want to bring Jack
- 1:35:23Nicholson into this? We can.
- 1:35:27You can't handle the tooth. Yes, you can't handle the tooth.
- 1:35:33I like it. I like it a lot.
- 1:35:35Full circle. How long have you been thinking
- 1:35:37of that since? We started.
- 1:35:38Did you OK? Good.
- 1:35:41I'm proud of you. That was good.
- 1:35:42Thank. You I'm glad I didn't like spoil
- 1:35:44it at. The beginning of.
- 1:35:45That so I feel like that's less fun.
- 1:35:48Perfect. All right, Well, I guess that
- 1:35:50means we're moving on to reviews now.
- 1:35:51Reviews OK, so I got us an IMDb review and I had to do some
- 1:35:58digging for like a good one because, you know, some of it
- 1:36:01was just not great. Here's the thing, I'm totally
- 1:36:03fine if people do or don't like a movie.
- 1:36:05I just want to know why? Yeah, I'm saying I wanted like a
- 1:36:08good thought out explanation. For it, that's kind of our whole
- 1:36:11thing here that we totally respect people's opinions for.
- 1:36:14Not like we joke around when we say a score is rude, but like,
- 1:36:18if you can explain why you feel that way, I can be like, yeah, I
- 1:36:22get it, this movie is not for you.
- 1:36:24Yeah, that's fine. All right, so this was rated 4
- 1:36:28out 10. It's titled a great
- 1:36:30disappointment. Boring.
- 1:36:32No. So they say.
- 1:36:35This film attracted my attention by being brought to us by the
- 1:36:38creators of Reanimator. Brian Yelson and Stuart Gordon
- 1:36:41are pretty are a pretty incredible team and I've
- 1:36:43thoroughly enjoyed their body of work.
- 1:36:45Sadly, I think this one falls short of their other projects
- 1:36:49aside from the girl who plays Sarah.
- 1:36:50The acting is cheesy and over the top, the film quality is
- 1:36:54poor and the general plot is just weak with some sort of
- 1:36:57opera tie in that doesn't really make sense.
- 1:37:00The real strength of the film is in the special effects and
- 1:37:02makeup, while some of the scenes aren't exactly realistic, such
- 1:37:06as the mower destruction scene. The FX crew went out of their
- 1:37:10way to be disgusting and gory, which is what makes this film
- 1:37:13memorable at all. Many people dislike tooth trauma
- 1:37:16in horror films, so this is going to leave them very feeling
- 1:37:19very uncomfortable. I don't like teeth being pulled
- 1:37:22or knocked out with hammers, but the way this film presented it,
- 1:37:25I found the gore more enjoyable enjoyable than disturbing.
- 1:37:29For the most part, The Dentist is a forgettable film and not
- 1:37:33something you need to see on your phone, see or own.
- 1:37:36I haven't seen The Dentist Too yet, but I suspect that one
- 1:37:39isn't much better. Perhaps you'd be better off with
- 1:37:41Doctor Giggles or Novocaine. OK, Doctor Giggles is a good
- 1:37:45movie too. Here's The thing is that when
- 1:37:50you think about the dentist, you don't think about necessarily
- 1:37:52the whole plot. You do just think of those
- 1:37:54moments in the chair. And then you're like, oh, well,
- 1:37:56the rest of the movie must just be a lot of, like, sludge.
- 1:37:59Yeah, But when you're actually watching it, there's not really
- 1:38:02dull moments on the screen. Everything is moving the story
- 1:38:05forward, which is what you want. Yeah, I I agree with you.
- 1:38:08I think like they keep it interesting and they keep a good
- 1:38:12pace with it. I can get how somebody would
- 1:38:15like upon reflection be like, I don't really remember much well.
- 1:38:19From this person's person. Oh, sorry, go ahead.
- 1:38:21Oh, I was going to say because the the effects are so gruesome,
- 1:38:25like they're, they're well done, but also they hit a thing that
- 1:38:29so many people are just very like evolutionarily we want to
- 1:38:34keep our teeth intact. Yeah.
- 1:38:36And everybody who's suffered any type of tooth pain, Yeah, like,
- 1:38:41it's so sensitive. Yeah.
- 1:38:43It hurts in a unique way that no other part of your body does.
- 1:38:47Yeah, yeah. So with this person, I can
- 1:38:50understand why they didn't like it, because they went in with
- 1:38:54the assumption of the filmography of these people.
- 1:38:57Yeah, which is very outlandish. Like society and Reanimator,
- 1:39:02they take a concept they just like make it as weird as they
- 1:39:06possibly can, as right here they did make the dentist weird.
- 1:39:10A lot of the reviews here were like people saying like I just
- 1:39:13caught this on TV and the only reason I kept watching it is
- 1:39:16because it was so weird. Like, oh, that's a Brian yes
- 1:39:19movie for you right there, but it's not like it doesn't go full
- 1:39:22yes, no, or that's stupid. Gordon.
- 1:39:24Yeah. And I will say, I do think that
- 1:39:26the second one is a little bit more actiony, like there's a
- 1:39:33little bit more going on. It feels more like a Yosno film
- 1:39:36than this one does. It was really interesting
- 1:39:38because like they they were talking in the interview with
- 1:39:44Corbin and he said the first one they they didn't they didn't
- 1:39:54like what he did with the script because he did it his way.
- 1:39:58He yasneted up. And they're like, OK, when they
- 1:40:02when the producers of the second one gave him the script, they
- 1:40:05wouldn't let him have it until the day before shooting so he
- 1:40:08couldn't fuck with it any. But instead they like would meet
- 1:40:13at night after shooting and then they would take the next day's
- 1:40:16scenes and rewrite them. So that's probably why we get
- 1:40:20some of the Azna stuff from the second one.
- 1:40:23OK, that amped up a little bit because they're writing it so
- 1:40:25last minute and maybe it's just like so chaotic and that.
- 1:40:29Yeah. Right there.
- 1:40:30But this one right here is like a little bit more methodical and
- 1:40:33they shot for a grounded experience.
- 1:40:34Yes, they were intending to be more grounded.
- 1:40:37Yeah, it was just grounded that he is.
- 1:40:38No way. Exactly.
- 1:40:39Yeah, that's grounded the best he can get.
- 1:40:41Yeah. All right.
- 1:40:42So listener. He's not exactly C level, if you
- 1:40:45know what I mean. And I think you do all right.
- 1:40:49Time for some listener reviews. So we got to today.
- 1:40:53OK, first one is from Cube Saves.
- 1:40:55OK, it says this movie always stuck with me.
- 1:40:58Teeth. Body horror is a good niche.
- 1:41:00Yeah. You know what it is, and I feel
- 1:41:03like it definitely stands out all on its own because holy
- 1:41:07shit, it's just so fucking upsetting.
- 1:41:09But I think when you think of a lot of movies that involve, I
- 1:41:14hate the term, but torture porn type stuff, you have a mix of
- 1:41:19things happening. It's not just one specific
- 1:41:21thing. So this all being focused on
- 1:41:23teeth is unique. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:41:26Yeah, You can have scenes of people getting their teeth
- 1:41:28pulled out and that's always upsetting, but this one focuses
- 1:41:32purely on it. Yeah, cuz like I can think of
- 1:41:34probably like 3 or 4 movies off the top of my head that have
- 1:41:38tooth trauma, but just as like one thing in a whole gory mess.
- 1:41:42Saw Three and Vile. Also, truth or dare, the sci-fi
- 1:41:47one. Oh, yeah.
- 1:41:48So there we go. We got three right off the bat
- 1:41:49right there. Yeah, they're all in a little
- 1:41:52torture. Yeah, sub genre right there.
- 1:41:55OK. And one more.
- 1:41:57We have Ward Zombie, who says? I think I have this on DVD, but
- 1:42:03from what I can remember, it was not good Zombies.
- 1:42:07It's OK, man. If you don't like it, Yeah, But
- 1:42:09maybe, like, give it another watch.
- 1:42:10Give it. Another shot.
- 1:42:11Listen, there have been so many movies over time that I've been
- 1:42:14like, I did not like that. And then I rewatch and I'm like,
- 1:42:16you know what, Actually I do? It happens all the time it.
- 1:42:18Happens. All the time.
- 1:42:20It's happened in the reverse, also to be.
- 1:42:22Fair. True.
- 1:42:22Yeah, I've got a movie I've walked down.
- 1:42:24I'm like, that's not as good as I remembered.
- 1:42:26Yeah, I remember famously as talking about Halloween
- 1:42:29resurrection, and I ended up being talked out of defending it
- 1:42:33as much as I was by the end. I remember we all liked it.
- 1:42:38We liked it, but I was really hardcore defending it until like
- 1:42:43halfway through and I was like, no, I'm talking myself out of
- 1:42:45this movie as we're going through it.
- 1:42:47Yeah, none. Yeah, but I get it, man.
- 1:42:51Maybe give it another shot. But if you don't like it, you
- 1:42:53don't like it, That's that's totally cool.
- 1:42:55But if you already have it on DVD anyway.
- 1:42:57Give it another shot, and it's also free if you don't have it
- 1:42:59on DVD. So yeah, that's also happened to
- 1:43:02me plenty of times. I think I have something on a
- 1:43:04DVDI do. Yeah, yeah, we do that quite a
- 1:43:07bit actually. OK, so that's it for this week's
- 1:43:10episode. Yep, again, this Sunday is going
- 1:43:13to be our TV or not to be episode.
- 1:43:15We'll of course share that we don't know what it is until we
- 1:43:18sit down to pick it out. It's a Jessie pick this month.
- 1:43:21Yeah. And then next week, guess what
- 1:43:24it is? It's my pic and I chose In a
- 1:43:28Violent nature. We're getting a new release up
- 1:43:31in this piece. Yeah, it's.
- 1:43:32Releasing tomorrow on Shutter. Yep, Friday the 13th on shutter,
- 1:43:37you can watch it. You've been able to watch it on
- 1:43:39rentals for a while now. So if you don't have shutter and
- 1:43:42you don't want to do that, you can do that also.
- 1:43:44It is. I feel it's worth the rental.
- 1:43:46This is another one that I've read has been kind of divisive
- 1:43:50for audiences. I've read that too, yeah.
- 1:43:54I know we've already kind of touched on that.
- 1:43:55We really enjoyed it, so I'm excited to revisit it.
- 1:43:59I am. I'm really excited for it.
- 1:44:01It's going to be an interesting one to cover on a podcast.
- 1:44:03I think it's it's a unique movie.
- 1:44:05It's a unique movie, but I think I think there's plenty that
- 1:44:08we'll be able to talk about. Yeah, it's definitely.
- 1:44:10If you don't know anything about it, just go into it.
- 1:44:12Blind. Go in blind.
- 1:44:14Absolutely. I recommend that for any movie,
- 1:44:16but especially this. But this one especially because
- 1:44:18Travis was like so hyped up for it and we watched like a teaser
- 1:44:21for it. Not a full trailer, just like a
- 1:44:23little teaser and. I watched the full trailer.
- 1:44:25But that's rare for you. Well, I remember somebody, I
- 1:44:31wasn't even on my radar, and somebody mentioned the premise
- 1:44:33and had the trailer attached. I was like, fuck it, let's see
- 1:44:36what it is. But the trailer doesn't give
- 1:44:38anything away. Yeah, and it gives you an idea
- 1:44:40of what the movie's gonna be like.
- 1:44:42And I was not sold by it when you showed it to me, but I was
- 1:44:47willing to go watch it with you. And I'm so glad I did because it
- 1:44:51wasn't what I expected it to be. And it's.
- 1:44:55Just watch it just like I just at least give it a shot.
- 1:44:59It might not be your thing and that's when I can absolutely
- 1:45:02understand not being somebody's thing.
- 1:45:03But yes, I highly recommend at least checking it out.
- 1:45:06Yes, at least give it a shot because you never know until you
- 1:45:09try. Yeah, and also because we're
- 1:45:11going to be talking about it and I don't want to spoil it for you
- 1:45:13unless you want it to be spoiled for you, then come on over.
- 1:45:16Yeah, we'll talk about it. So yeah, that's coming up.
- 1:45:20So in the meantime, we would like to thank our patrons.
- 1:45:24We have Joe. Freitatron.
- 1:45:27As is his name, Amber, Michael Ward, Zombie Tyler and Chad.

- 1:45:56on whatever platform, drop a little review, maybe we'll read
- 1:46:00that on the show if you do that and share episodes if yeah, you
- 1:46:05know, we released something that you liked or you think somebody
- 1:46:08might like. You know, we really appreciate
- 1:46:09it when you guys do that. You guys are awesome.
- 1:46:11Also, like, vote in our polls and have a fun debate with it
- 1:46:16because we started doing that with phenomena because we were
- 1:46:20just going back and forth, like would it be better to have a
- 1:46:22swarm of insects or a fun chimpanzee sidekick?
- 1:46:26And that became such a fun discussion with people.
- 1:46:29We like hearing people debate. Yeah, if you yeah, if you got
- 1:46:32thoughts on it, I love that too. Yeah, I guess some people that
- 1:46:36send them as private messages and I love that too.
- 1:46:38So I. Love it when people share why
- 1:46:40they're voting the way they are and they try and try and
- 1:46:42convince people to vote for their side.
- 1:46:44And also some people and do write insurance which I'll I'll
- 1:46:47always allow those two. Those are cool too.
- 1:46:48This is a democracy. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:46:51All right. So thank you, guys.
- 1:46:53We really appreciate you all being here.
- 1:46:55And you can find us on our social media.

- 1:47:07All right. So I think that's it for now.
- 1:47:10We will see you guys on your next dental cleaning, which is
- 1:47:15in a week, so I'm sorry so soon. We do weekend visits.
- 1:47:18Oh yeah, we're doing. Yeah, we got an emergency.
- 1:47:21Emergency. The emergency clinic is open
- 1:47:22people. Come on.
- 1:47:23Over talk on in all right see y'all Bye bye.
- 1:47:40Your brain is in a weird place right now because you just woke
- 1:47:42up from a nap. I haven't slept well for the
- 1:47:45past. Few years I can tell.
