- 0:00Speaker 1: Ah. When you hear smooth sects, there's only one name
- 0:03Speaker 1: you think of in this market when we're talking Broncos,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and that is Jeff Legwald. And he joins us as
- 0:08Speaker 1: he does every Friday here on Craikman and Lindahl. Our
- 0:11Speaker 1: guy Jeff driving around looking to get out of town.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I imagine pretty soon. Jeff, how are you?
- 0:15Speaker 2: First off, I'm great? Are you guys?
- 0:18Speaker 1: You know we're doing well? The other question I had
- 0:20Speaker 1: for you, So let's just start off with this, because
- 0:23Speaker 1: now you know what I want to get into your brand.
- 0:25Speaker 1: In Jones' story, Nate sentenced to us and it was
- 0:27Speaker 1: a great story today. And we just got done talking
- 0:29Speaker 1: about our man getting in that good swim time at
- 0:31Speaker 1: the rec center, which just has got to make you
- 0:32Speaker 1: love the guy even more. But before we cover your
- 0:35Speaker 1: work on ESPN for the big ESPN dot com today,
- 0:38Speaker 1: Lucas Kroll, were you surprised by this all of a sudden,
- 0:42Speaker 1: He's on the injury report, has a broken foot and
- 0:44Speaker 1: it looks like he's headed to short term I R.
- 0:45Speaker 1: What's the story with Lucas Kroll?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah? Man, that's uh, you knows. My understanding is it
- 0:54Speaker 2: was yesterday he reported the injury or the pain he
- 0:58Speaker 2: was feeling after playing this yesterday to the trainers and
- 1:02Speaker 2: they went and set him for an MRI and all
- 1:05Speaker 2: their estimate and he was mom. They didn't move him
- 1:09Speaker 2: to IR today at least according to the transaction report.
- 1:13Speaker 2: So I would guess in the next few days or so,
- 1:17Speaker 2: he moves to use to IR at least for at
- 1:21Speaker 2: least for the four week window, maybe a little more.
- 1:23Speaker 2: But he is not making the trip to Philly. And
- 1:29Speaker 2: then you know, the team's leaving from Philly to London,
- 1:31Speaker 2: so he is not making the trip. He'll be here,
- 1:35Speaker 2: you know, taking care of the injury. Jeff.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Let's ask another injury related question. And by the way,
- 1:41Speaker 3: thank you for being everybody's frontline worker and standing there
- 1:43Speaker 3: and asking Sean Payton injury related questions like about illnesses
- 1:47Speaker 3: and other things that maybe going down with Quinn minors.
- 1:53Speaker 3: And actually, if you have any extra information on the
- 1:55Speaker 3: Quinn miners illness, we would love that. But also, Malcolm Roach,
- 1:59Speaker 3: who is eligible to come off I are start practicing
- 2:02Speaker 3: this week. What do we know about his availability if any.
- 2:07Speaker 2: You know, I think I keep saying he's doing great,
- 2:10Speaker 2: he's doing great, and then you know, I have to
- 2:13Speaker 2: say I didn't see the transaction report yet today with
- 2:17Speaker 2: my own eyes, but he has not. Then you know
- 2:20Speaker 2: they have to list him as returning to practice at
- 2:25Speaker 2: some point or that you formally started the clock, and
- 2:28Speaker 2: and as of yesterday he had not. He had not
- 2:30Speaker 2: been listed in any passion. But I think they're I
- 2:33Speaker 2: think he's closing in. He's still working on the side field,
- 2:37Speaker 2: you know, while the team is practicing, so he is.
- 2:40Speaker 2: He's doing well enough to be at that stage. And
- 2:43Speaker 2: you know, that's kind of where you are before you
- 2:46Speaker 2: return to practice. You know, you're out there with the
- 2:48Speaker 2: trainer and you've made enough progress to be there. But
- 2:52Speaker 2: you know, they really miss on me. They're only real
- 2:56Speaker 2: true nose tackle and and I think sometimes as good
- 3:00Speaker 2: as they've played on defense, you can see his absence.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Jeff, We've been pondering for the last couple of days,
- 3:07Speaker 1: since Nate brought it up yesterday, what do the Broncos
- 3:10Speaker 1: do for coveraging sa crom b for Saquon Barkley when
- 3:13Speaker 1: he comes out of the backfield. You know, I feel
- 3:16Speaker 1: like the plan has been solid against the run for
- 3:18Speaker 1: most of the year, obviously, but the backs and the
- 3:20Speaker 1: tight end sometimes seem to bite this team, at least
- 3:23Speaker 1: the good ones. Who do you think it's the assignment
- 3:25Speaker 1: against Berkley?
- 3:28Speaker 2: I think ultimately, I don't know if we're to that
- 3:30Speaker 2: point yet, but I think that's uh, that's not John A.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Baron's menu at some point, you know, as the dime
- 3:37Speaker 2: linebacker already, and I think they envisioned that some possibilities
- 3:43Speaker 2: there at least, you know, and then when Greenma returns obviously,
- 3:46Speaker 2: but they're not to that point yet. Maybe close with Barren,
- 3:50Speaker 2: but they gotta figure something out because you know, he
- 3:53Speaker 2: had a big play last week. You know, he leaks
- 3:56Speaker 2: out of the backfield and and you know the poor
- 3:59Speaker 2: linebacker is trying to keep up and it becomes a
- 4:04Speaker 2: scramble play and Barkley does what a wide receiver does
- 4:08Speaker 2: on the play and goes deep on a scramble play.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So they got they got to be aware, and they
- 4:14Speaker 2: got to be aware late in the down because he's
- 4:17Speaker 2: that was a pretty heady play by our running back
- 4:20Speaker 2: in the past pattern to go full wide receiver scramble
- 4:24Speaker 2: drill mode with pretty seamlessly. So it's an issue and
- 4:30Speaker 2: people have gotten him on the wheel route this year already,
- 4:33Speaker 2: so uh right now, it's you know, it's it's done
- 4:38Speaker 2: Sterno or Singleton and and coordinators are looking to pin
- 4:42Speaker 2: those guys, and you know, I think ultimately, I think
- 4:46Speaker 2: Baron can be in that mix at some point.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Talking to our buddy Jeff Legwell, right now, Jeff Lagwell,
- 4:52Speaker 3: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 4:54Speaker 3: ibe W Local sixty eight. You start with the job,
- 4:57Speaker 3: you end with a career, Jeff, your old buddy, Vic
- 5:00Speaker 3: Fangio now goes up against Sean Payton's offense. Uh, this week,
- 5:06Speaker 3: what do we think Vic is gonna do this week?
- 5:09Speaker 3: How is he going to attack Denver? Because you know,
- 5:13Speaker 3: Vic Fangio is a zone guy to to his core,
- 5:18Speaker 3: But at the same time, this year, like Vic Fangio
- 5:21Speaker 3: has run more cover one than than he almost ever has,
- 5:25Speaker 3: and he's not been afraid the man guys up and
- 5:27Speaker 3: he's got Quinnon, Mitchell and Cooper de Gene out there,
- 5:29Speaker 3: and he's got the horses for it. And he's also
- 5:33Speaker 3: well aware like hey, Bo Nicks good against zone, not
- 5:36Speaker 3: so good against man. What do you think is going
- 5:39Speaker 3: to be the the play here for Vic Fangio going
- 5:42Speaker 3: up against Denver's offense.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Oh no, I thank you. Certainly, at some point, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 2: for a half a corner or a couple of possessions,
- 5:51Speaker 2: he will test Nick's patience. You know, the book on
- 5:56Speaker 2: the book on Nicks is eventually he's gonna want to
- 5:58Speaker 2: chuck it. You know that he won't wait it out,
- 6:02Speaker 2: so to speak. And I think that's why, you know,
- 6:06Speaker 2: Monday after the game, I think that's why Sean Payton
- 6:09Speaker 2: was so intent on saying, you know, Bo Nicks did
- 6:14Speaker 2: a really good job thrown underneath, and our work underneath
- 6:18Speaker 2: was important. I think that's the message he's trying to give.
- 6:22Speaker 2: So at this point, after all those misdeep balls in
- 6:25Speaker 2: week three, so I think they're trying to get them
- 6:28Speaker 2: to understand you've got to pull those safeties up and
- 6:32Speaker 2: then you can go after it, and you know them
- 6:35Speaker 2: running the ball better well will Certainly even Vic can't
- 6:40Speaker 2: hold both those safeties back if he can't defend the
- 6:43Speaker 2: run with seven in the box. So running the ball
- 6:46Speaker 2: is the best way to get Vic Vangil out of
- 6:49Speaker 2: testing your patience for an entire game, because he he
- 6:52Speaker 2: won't budge if he thinks he's got you in that regard.
- 6:56Speaker 2: The other thing that's rare for Vic this year is
- 7:00Speaker 2: rookies starting on defense, and that is not something he
- 7:04Speaker 2: likes to do too much. And you know, I've heard
- 7:07Speaker 2: him quote, you know, Hall of Famer Bud Brant that
- 7:11Speaker 2: for every rookie you have starting on defense is a
- 7:14Speaker 2: loss on your record. So you know that's not something
- 7:20Speaker 2: They've had to adjust some things because he does have
- 7:23Speaker 2: two rookies, and Tampa last week got both of the
- 7:28Speaker 2: rookies for touchdowns. So I think that's an area where
- 7:33Speaker 2: the Broncos, you know, can look a little bit and
- 7:36Speaker 2: maybe go after it.
- 7:37Speaker 1: All right, mister, my guy the balloon popper, Let's talk
- 7:42Speaker 1: about this Philly offensive, particularly the Philadelphia Eagles overall. Are
- 7:46Speaker 1: they playing well? They've won twenty out of twenty one games.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's darn impressive. But they came up with all the
- 7:52Speaker 1: numbers that suggest, you know, there's a lot of things
- 7:54Speaker 1: going their way. They are catching some breaks. So what
- 7:57Speaker 1: I mean there's Super Bowl champs, right, but the number
- 8:01Speaker 1: is the passing game. It all just seems a little off.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Would you say this team's playing well?
- 8:06Speaker 2: Well, I've told people Andy, and I'm you know, look,
- 8:09Speaker 2: I'm looking at a lot of games over the years.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I am not certain how they've done it, but all
- 8:16Speaker 2: they seem to be good at is scoring touchdowns. You know,
- 8:19Speaker 2: they don't they don't move the ball particularly well. They
- 8:23Speaker 2: don't run the ball well. They're one of the worst.
- 8:27Speaker 2: You know, by the metrics, they're one of the worst
- 8:29Speaker 2: passing teams in the NFL. Yet they're eighth and scoring,
- 8:33Speaker 2: and they're number one in the red zone, so you know, wow,
- 8:37Speaker 2: I don't know how you even do that. But all
- 8:41Speaker 2: they are good at is scoring touchdowns. Like you make
- 8:44Speaker 2: even the smallest field position error, they're up in your
- 8:50Speaker 2: face with it, and and I think that's the issue.
- 8:54Speaker 2: You have to play clean. It's not enough to hold them,
- 8:59Speaker 2: you know, for two point eight yards of carry or
- 9:02Speaker 2: that you know hurts throws for one eighty. That still
- 9:05Speaker 2: might not be enough to beat them if you gave
- 9:08Speaker 2: them too many short fields because they're gonna score touchdowns.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I think they're perfect inside the twenty this year. So,
- 9:17Speaker 2: like I say, they test your ability to close out
- 9:22Speaker 2: drives and to keep them in positions or they can't
- 9:26Speaker 2: hurt you.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Talking to Jeff Legwald here, Jeff Legwald, as always, is
- 9:30Speaker 3: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 9:33Speaker 3: ibe W Local sixty eight. You start with a job
- 9:36Speaker 3: and you end with a career, All right, Leggy bo
- 9:41Speaker 3: Nicks in this matchup going up against Vangio and company?
- 9:46Speaker 3: Is this the biggest measuring stick game that that bo
- 9:49Speaker 3: has played so far? Like, let's let's let's put a
- 9:51Speaker 3: little bit of expectation on this game. Is is this
- 9:56Speaker 3: the one that if bow Knicks goes on the road
- 9:59Speaker 3: and wins it, then then suddenly Sean Payton's summer bravado
- 10:05Speaker 3: starts to look justified.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, look, the Eagles are good. They're four
- 10:11Speaker 2: and out. They're not the Eagles of last season. But
- 10:13Speaker 2: this would be if you pay and you combine everything
- 10:18Speaker 2: the road, the environment on the road, and the team
- 10:22Speaker 2: they're playing, this would easily be I think Shawn's best
- 10:26Speaker 2: win if they pull it off, and that would make
- 10:28Speaker 2: it both best win. But they're both gonna need their
- 10:33Speaker 2: best day, and I think it would be a shame
- 10:37Speaker 2: if the Broncos discovered their ren game and stuck to
- 10:42Speaker 2: it only against maybe the worst defense they'll see all year.
- 10:46Speaker 2: You know, I'm it's not proof to me until they're
- 10:50Speaker 2: willing to do it in a game like this, you know,
- 10:53Speaker 2: are you willing to do it in this kind of atmosphere,
- 10:57Speaker 2: this kind of game, And but it is it would
- 11:01Speaker 2: be their best win, certainly, and that's saying something, and
- 11:07Speaker 2: it's something they need. If you're really going to be
- 11:10Speaker 2: serious about being there at the end, you know youve
- 11:13Speaker 2: got to get a couple of these during the regular season.
- 11:18Speaker 1: All right, Jeff, I love the question for Nate will
- 11:20Speaker 1: pose it to you, although I think you just tipped
- 11:22Speaker 1: your hand on the answer with that answer right there.
- 11:24Speaker 1: If we're talking about a Broncos win on Monday, what's
- 11:27Speaker 1: who's the player we're talking about offensively and defensively.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Well, no, defensively. I just think if if Benito can
- 11:35Speaker 2: harass hurts more than he's been harassed, he's he's really
- 11:40Speaker 2: good now and at this point in his career of
- 11:43Speaker 2: understanding the moment when he should leave the pocket, like
- 11:46Speaker 2: he doesn't leave too early like a lot of mobile
- 11:49Speaker 2: guys do. He leads at the right time, you know,
- 11:53Speaker 2: when when he's got to save the play. And if
- 11:56Speaker 2: you play a lot of man defense, which le Broncos do,
- 12:00Speaker 2: you know your back has turned and that that makes
- 12:02Speaker 2: it tough so I think Banino's got to get him
- 12:05Speaker 2: on the ground. He's one of the strongest quarterbacks in
- 12:07Speaker 2: the league and offensively. I personally think if if Dobbins
- 12:12Speaker 2: has a big day, they've won the game.
- 12:15Speaker 3: That's a good thing to have to say right there,
- 12:18Speaker 3: and let's hope that that's going to be the case. Jeff,
- 12:22Speaker 3: have you ever bumped into Brandon Jones at the rec
- 12:24Speaker 3: center swimming at five am? You're a swimmer, did you
- 12:27Speaker 3: did you head out there to actually cover one of
- 12:29Speaker 3: these sessions?
- 12:31Speaker 2: I can't tell you how much sometimes it's fun for
- 12:35Speaker 2: guys just to tell you something that's really a funny,
- 12:38Speaker 2: interesting life. I just I know a lot of people
- 12:41Speaker 2: who swim in the morning as part of their regiments,
- 12:44Speaker 2: you know. And the picture of him just being at
- 12:48Speaker 2: the rec center at five am before he did this
- 12:52Speaker 2: in training camp fellas you know, two of days and
- 12:56Speaker 2: all the rest of it in the hot sun. This
- 12:59Speaker 2: guy is over the swimming at the rec center because
- 13:02Speaker 2: they don't want him to run extra conditioning like he
- 13:05Speaker 2: used to. So I just think it's uh. He said
- 13:09Speaker 2: Miami when he was in Miami with the Dolphins that
- 13:13Speaker 2: they had a lap pool in the facility, so he
- 13:17Speaker 2: had he had to think of an alternative, So he
- 13:21Speaker 2: just got a rec pass like the rest of us.
- 13:24Speaker 2: And I just love that. I just think he's a
- 13:27Speaker 2: really thoughtful guy. I like talking to him. I'm never disappointed. Uh.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And he's a really good football player who doesn't tell
- 13:34Speaker 2: everybody he's a really good football player.
- 13:37Speaker 1: So you didn't go to the rec center to watch it,
- 13:39Speaker 1: because now you're wondering, like, what's the get up? Is
- 13:42Speaker 1: he speedo guys?
- 13:43Speaker 2: Either?
- 13:43Speaker 1: What'd you call those other shorts that they wore, the
- 13:45Speaker 1: speed shorts and the Olympics.
- 13:48Speaker 3: The longer one, Yeah, that's what the Olympic swimmers rock
- 13:51Speaker 3: rw Or does he do board shorts.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Like you know us? Nobody's doing board shorts swimming at
- 13:58Speaker 2: five am?
- 13:58Speaker 1: Dude, come on, I am I'm showing up.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be awesome, you rocking the board shorts
- 14:07Speaker 2: at the five am swim off.
- 14:09Speaker 1: You swim he swig by the edge. I'll do it
- 14:11Speaker 1: just one day for you, leggy. Hey, you know what,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I'll plug my nose while I swim one handed too.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I won't to put the plugs of the goggles in.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You gotta have the nose plugs no, not.
- 14:26Speaker 1: From the and clear that place out.
- 14:29Speaker 2: There's actually a few lacos that swim. I think it's
- 14:32Speaker 2: I think it's interesting that that you know, they're discovery
- 14:36Speaker 2: might be a good way to shave your knees a
- 14:38Speaker 2: little bit.
- 14:39Speaker 1: All right, who's the heaviest dude that swims? Do you know?
- 14:42Speaker 1: We have a d tackle swimming? We got an old
- 14:44Speaker 1: ligneman swimming. What do we got?
- 14:46Speaker 2: I've been told Josh Franklin Myers has been seen on
- 14:49Speaker 2: a lifetime fitness uh swimming.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Laughs, Baby, that's awesome. That's that's a that's a large man,
- 14:56Speaker 3: by the way, like you if you're in the same
- 14:58Speaker 3: lane as him, like if you're going the opposite or
- 15:00Speaker 3: you can't get by that dude, that's that is a
- 15:03Speaker 3: lane for one right there. JFM is in there.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Listen, man, that's a whole way you kidd me. That's
- 15:09Speaker 1: knocking some waves over the other couple of lanes.
- 15:11Speaker 3: That is a big, big dude. All right, Leggy, Uh,
- 15:15Speaker 3: this this game okay? What what is your sense of
- 15:19Speaker 3: how it goes? Like I know you said, if JK.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Dobbins gets going, the Broncos can come away with a victory.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Should should Broncos fans trust that Denver is going to
- 15:29Speaker 3: lean into their actual path to victory in this matchup.
- 15:35Speaker 2: You know, like I say, until I see it in
- 15:38Speaker 2: a game like this, I think it's a question, man.
- 15:42Speaker 2: But you know I and I'm intrigued to see if
- 15:46Speaker 2: he goes with the little tempo because Fangio ordinarily doesn't
- 15:51Speaker 2: like to sabaton. You know, he switches a lot of
- 15:54Speaker 2: things in coverage and pre snap and all that. But
- 15:59Speaker 2: you know, I think oh could work a little bit too,
- 16:03Speaker 2: and I would do what Tampa did, which was attack
- 16:06Speaker 2: those rookies and see if they're up to the town.
- 16:08Speaker 2: You got one at lambegine Hot Campbell is the rocky linebacker,
- 16:13Speaker 2: and they got a rookie safety. So you know, I
- 16:15Speaker 2: think those are those are things Tampa did with success.
- 16:19Speaker 2: But look what happened in Tampa block punt. They're leading
- 16:23Speaker 2: seven nothing and they haven't moved the ball at all
- 16:26Speaker 2: in offense, and you know, they make that sort of
- 16:30Speaker 2: momentum last the rest of the day because you know,
- 16:35Speaker 2: you guys know I say it, But teams that have
- 16:38Speaker 2: won don't have that question in the back of their
- 16:40Speaker 2: mind anymore. They know and that makes them really hard
- 16:44Speaker 2: to beat in close games.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I just love that vig Vangio quotes Bud Grant on
- 16:48Speaker 3: the regulars. Jeff Legwald, everybody, ESPN dot com get his
- 16:52Speaker 3: stuff right there. His latest piece on Brandon Jones is great,
- 16:57Speaker 3: an excellent insight and wonderful sport. It's writing by our
- 17:00Speaker 3: friend Jeff Langwald, who we will talk to on Monday
- 17:03Speaker 3: here on the Craigman and Lindahl Show. Le you travel safely,
- 17:06Speaker 3: thanks Pal.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Thanks Pal, that's time. I'll talk to you from London.
- 17:11Speaker 3: All right. Good stuff from Jeff Langward from Jelly Old
- 17:15Speaker 3: London
