- 0:15sinicamzonecoverage.com on the Packers.
- 0:19I will talk to Dane Moussutani, writes for the Saint Paul
- 0:22Pioneer Press, covers the Vikings and then Stephen M
- 0:24Simple head to Lincoln at about 1:30 preview Michigan and the
- 0:30Huskers. That is a 2:30 Saturday kick.
- 0:34Hello, Dave Synekin, your #30 of Packer preview on Sunday
- 0:38morning. How are you today?
- 0:40Good, Ken. Good to talk to you guys as
- 0:42always. Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:43Get right back at you and fun to watch this team, especially what
- 0:47we're seeing a little bit of a mini buy after the Thursday game
- 0:50last week against Washington. Now they had two Cleveland,
- 0:54Dave. I've seen a lot of love for
- 0:56Cleveland, particularly their defense, and there's a lot of
- 0:59folks out there that think that this is a trickier spot than
- 1:03just showing up and going to three and O and moving on to
- 1:06take on the Cowboys next week. How do you feel about this game?
- 1:11A little bit, a little bit of that apprehension, I think only
- 1:14because if you look beyond the numbers, you see that this
- 1:17defense is really good against the run.
- 1:19Chase Brown and Derrick Henry have done nothing against the
- 1:22defense and they held Joe Burrow to 7 yards passing in the
- 1:26second-half of A1 possession game.
- 1:28I mean, they're pretty legit defensively and Green Bay is
- 1:31still not totally full on their offensive line.
- 1:34So I think Cleveland could wreak some havoc against the Green Day
- 1:38offense that's down a couple guys and make things kind of
- 1:41muddy and kind of low scoring. I don't know how Cleveland
- 1:44scores, but I do think points are going to be tricky and I am
- 1:47a little concerned about looking ahead to the prime time game
- 1:50against Dallas. I think they're coached well
- 1:53enough to not. You've got a major issue, but
- 1:55human nature says you're a big favorite.
- 1:57Against the winless team that's lost eight straight just
- 2:00starting a statue of quarterback, it all seems easy.
- 2:03I just hope they don't just buy into all that.
- 2:05Josh Jacobs suddenly shows up on the entry report with an ankle
- 2:08injury. He's been running hard behind
- 2:10that depleted offensive line. Well, take away on that and
- 2:14Jacob's certainly a guy like you'd rather have him maybe take
- 2:18a little bit of time off now and be ready for December of January
- 2:21as opposed to struggling through an injury.
- 2:22What can you tell us on that front?
- 2:25Yeah, he's been really healthy in his year plus with the
- 2:27Packers. He seems to play through with a
- 2:29lot of stuff. I don't think there's a real
- 2:31concern of him not playing. I do think you will see more of
- 2:34Chris Brooks, who served their de facto #2 since Marshawn Lloyd
- 2:39can't stay on the field and he gives them a little bit more do
- 2:43everything than Emanuel Wilson does, and Brooks is really good
- 2:46and pass protection. This feels like a day where if
- 2:49you have to rest Jacobs a little bit more, put Chris Brooks on
- 2:52the field to give those tackles some help on.
- 2:55I'm Miles Garrett and Isaiah McGuire, so I expect a fairly
- 3:00normal workload. Something to watch for sure.
- 3:02And the bye weeks coming up Week 5, and that's when teams start
- 3:05to be a little careful, knowing that some added rest might
- 3:08really help. But he's a warrior.
- 3:10I don't think that this is anything that's going to slow
- 3:12him down too much. So is Tucker Craft.
- 3:15Every time I watch him, I think he's getting better and better
- 3:17and better. What's his ceiling?
- 3:19Is there going to be a time here in the next couple of years that
- 3:23we're talking, you know, once Kelsey he's gone, etcetera and
- 3:26there's a change over, there's a new group of tight ends, maybe
- 3:29Kittles getting a little long in the tooth.
- 3:31Mike Tucker Crafts name be brought up very quickly.
- 3:34We're talking about some of the better tight ends of the game,
- 3:36and maybe he deserves to be right now.
- 3:39Yeah, I think he's already in that, you know, top five
- 3:41conversation, even though it, you know, he hasn't shown a
- 3:43whole lot, obviously beyond what happened Thursday night.
- 3:47I think he's that kind of a George Kittle arc.
- 3:49You know, he's trained a lot with George Kittle.
- 3:51He's pattered his game after Kittle.
- 3:53And what Craft does really well behind all the fantasy numbers
- 3:56is he's a great blocker, too. I mean, that's Kittle they
- 4:00drafted, right When they drafted Luke Musgrave in the second
- 4:03round and crafted the third. The narrative was, well,
- 4:05Musgraves, your downfield threat, he crashes your blocker
- 4:09and Craft has obviously shown he's much more than a blocker,
- 4:11but he's really good at that. And I think on Sunday he will do
- 4:14a lot of that too, helping out on that front 7, which is the
- 4:18strength of that unit. I can see a lot of those plays
- 4:20where he's blocking, blocking. Then he releases and and and
- 4:23Love finds him. But yeah, I think the Sky's the
- 4:25limit. He seems like he really gets it.
- 4:28He's just scratching the surface and I think a top three, top
- 4:31five tight end feels like his career arc if he could stay
- 4:34healthy. You know, I saw something or or
- 4:36heard something about the Packers.
- 4:38They don't have a traditional number one, but Kraft, maybe he
- 4:41can kind of turn into that de facto #1 if you will.
- 4:44They got a bunch of number twos and number threes.
- 4:46When you look through the course of the season, who are the wide
- 4:48receivers you think are going to end up having a big year knowing
- 4:51the injuries have already also to hit that room at this point?
- 4:54Yeah, it's wild because two of the top four guys are out now
- 4:57for at least a month. You know, Jaden reads out for
- 4:59longer. Christian Watson should be back
- 5:02week six, week 7, something like that.
- 5:04So, you know, if Watson comes back healthy, he's in the mix
- 5:07because of the combination of speed and everything he's done.
- 5:10He's a great blocker on the field, too.
- 5:12I mean, Matthew Golden, I think has the most upside.
- 5:15And I know it's been a slow start and we've seen a couple of
- 5:17just misses on long throws with Jordan Love.
- 5:20I think they're going to get him more of the mix in the slot now
- 5:22with Jaden Reed. God, I think Wix plays in the
- 5:25slot as well. I think over these next four or
- 5:27five weeks as they're undermanned a bit, you'll have a
- 5:30Dobbs week, a golden week, a craft week.
- 5:32I happen to think think this is the Ductavian Wicks week.
- 5:35I think he's going to step in and you know, they went to him
- 5:38early and some big third downs last week and he's showing he
- 5:41can catch the ball, which has been his problem.
- 5:43He's got everything else you want.
- 5:45So I don't know that by the end of the season you're going to
- 5:47say this guy is the absolute number one.
- 5:50But I think at any given week, Golden, Watson, Dobbs.
- 5:53Reed. Wicks Craft.
- 5:55I mean, they get the guys that can all step up, and I know
- 5:58that's not fun for guys that play fantasy, but it's also not
- 6:00fun for defenses looking to key in on anybody because you really
- 6:03can't. Are you enjoying this, Dave?
- 6:05I mean, you think back you, you watch Brett Favre, you watched
- 6:08Aaron Rodgers, you're now watching Jordan Love.
- 6:11It was you know, it was quarterback, quarterback,
- 6:13quarterback in the offense that goes along with it.
- 6:15This team is there. I think their identity is is
- 6:18that of a defensive football team right now.
- 6:20No disrespect to love and company, but watching Rashawn
- 6:23Geary we pay close attention to the Van Ness Devante Wyatt's
- 6:29caught my eye so far this year. And of course the 4th I'm about
- 6:32to say is Micah Parsons is not bad in his own right.
- 6:35Is is it's different as a Packer fan this year, is it not?
- 6:39Totally. I mean Edgar and Cooper Xavier.
- 6:41There you go. Yeah.
- 6:43They're they're they're on all three levels.
- 6:45I'll say this as a guy living in the Twin Cities, I've had to
- 6:48hear for the last 5-6 years from Viking fans.
- 6:51Just wait, just wait till Aaron Rodgers retires 30 years of, you
- 6:55know, drought in the desert for your team.
- 6:57It's all over. We're never going to hear from
- 6:59the Packers again. And, you know, here we are, as
- 7:02you know, some say the NFC favorite of already through two
- 7:06weeks. I'm not going to go that far.
- 7:07But they're in the conversation and it is.
- 7:09It is about the defense and Green Bay has been a Super Bowl
- 7:12contender in the last, you know, 25 years.
- 7:15It's the the far team was a great defense.
- 7:18The Rodgers 2010 team was a great defense and that's where
- 7:21it starts. And as a guy that grew up just
- 7:23as the Lombardi era was ending, I remember the defense is what
- 7:27that team was all about. I love having a team that is
- 7:30known for its defense and I just feel like this team is only
- 7:33going to get better. As you mentioned, all the young
- 7:35guys stepping up, Devante Wyatt in particular, Edgar and Cooper
- 7:39Quay Walker looks like a different guy.
- 7:42I just as a football fan, I like nothing more than throwing out a
- 7:46defense, and I think it slowed down anybody and going into a
- 7:49game this weekend thinking a shutout is not out of the
- 7:51question, firing turnovers. I don't know how Cleveland moves
- 7:55the ball 50 or 60 yards against this team.
- 7:57So you mentioned your locale up there in Minneapolis, JJ
- 8:02McCarthy struggling, then to the South, the Bears with their
- 8:06quarterback struggling. So as a Packer fan, I mean, what
- 8:10gives you a little bit better Schadenfreude, right?
- 8:12Is it the the Bears woes or the Vikings woes?
- 8:16Well, I'm a born and bred Milwaukee guy who was taught to
- 8:18hate the bears from the moment I can speak.
- 8:20So when the bears under, sorry Trent, when the bears
- 8:23underperform or are let down, nothing feels better for me in
- 8:27the entire world. Being up here doing a Packer
- 8:29show on the Viking station for 30 years, it's gotten a little
- 8:33closer for me because I hear from the worst of Vikings fans
- 8:36week in and week out. You know when they I've heard
- 8:38about JJ McCarthy ad nauseam for a year and a half about how he's
- 8:42the second coming. Just wait till Kevin O'Connell
- 8:44gets hands on him and maybe he will.
- 8:46He will do that, but he's nowhere close to that just yet,
- 8:49and they have to question how long it might take him to get
- 8:52there. I'm not surprised that you're
- 8:54going to see Illinois and Indiana.
- 8:56Normally it would have thought it would have been in January on
- 8:58a Saturday or something like that, but it's a, it's, it's
- 9:02dad's weekend on campus. You're going to be there for
- 9:05Illinois in Indiana 6 30 NBC has the I I can't wait for it.
- 9:10I really can't. It's appointment TV.
- 9:12But what are you expecting to see?
- 9:14You're an Indiana grad, you're going to be there for the game,
- 9:17etcetera. Fun times to be a Hoosier.
- 9:20What do you expect to see in that football game, Dave?
- 9:23Well, first of all, the last couple of dads weekends this
- 9:26weekend, I'd get to see Indiana play Akron and Charlotte.
- 9:29So I'm really excited that they've got not only a big 10
- 9:33game, but you know, a game featuring a top ten fighting a
- 9:36line. I team which I haven't watched
- 9:38yet this season. I I know that Beelam has really
- 9:40turned that program around and Indiana has had it all tested
- 9:44themselves through two weeks after beating up an Indiana
- 9:47State 73. Nothing.
- 9:49I'm excited to watch Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback from
- 9:51Cal, who I do believe is going to be an early draft pick if he
- 9:55stays healthy this year. He's got everything you want.
- 9:58And there's been a lot of receivers.
- 10:00Yeah, he's big. He's got a strong arm and he's
- 10:02got a lot of weapons he can throw to.
- 10:03So I'm, I'm anxious to watch him in person and see what he could
- 10:06do against a really good Big 10 competition.
- 10:09And I still think Indiana's a bit undervalued.
- 10:12People look at last year's kind of flukish schedule wasn't that
- 10:15hard. They've got Illinois, Iowa,
- 10:18Oregon the next three weeks. So we will know all about Kurt
- 10:21Stig Nettie's team this year. I, I'm cautiously optimistic
- 10:25that this place, Memorial Stadium, is going to be so
- 10:28different from I how I ever under the lights Saturday night.
- 10:32So I can't wait to be there. I I think Indiana has a chance
- 10:35to pull it out, but it's a really big test because I don't
- 10:38like the way they've prepared for a game like this with the
- 10:40competition they've played so. Far.
- 10:42Well, we'll double dip with you next week and not in addition to
- 10:44our Packers conversation in advance of the Dallas night
- 10:47game, we'll ask you about Indiana, Iowa as well.
- 10:50Dave, enjoy Parents weekend as you go back to your alma mater.
- 10:53You should see a good game. Appreciate the conversation as
- 10:57always, Dave. Thank you.
- 10:59My pleasure guys, talk to you next week.
- 11:00Good to talk to you, Dave. syndicatezonecoverage.com from
- 11:03the Packers, the Vikings, Dane Mazatani, we stay in the Twin
- 11:06Cities. twincities.com for you hockey fans will do a little
- 11:09wild. Capril Karil Capris off met the
- 11:12media for the first time since he said no no to his contract
- 11:16extension. But we first of all start with
- 11:18those Vikings in the news. Dane, as always, thank you first
- 11:21of all, for joining us. JJ McCarthy out.
- 11:24Let's start, I guess with him and potentially does this.
- 11:27We may may Vikings fans potentially not see McCarthy
- 11:31under center until after the bye week, after they get back from
- 11:34the double dip across the pond. Yeah, I think that's the
- 11:38operator. That's just some time kind of
- 11:40operating under right now. That timeline hasn't been given
- 11:44by Kevin O'Connell by the Vikings, but if you just zoom
- 11:48out and look at it from a bigger picture standpoint, Carson Wentz
- 11:52is going to play at this Sunday. Do you really want JJ McCarthy
- 11:55to return at any point on that international trip and
- 11:58especially with the BI kind of coming right after that?
- 12:02This ankle injury is as bad as it seems.
- 12:05It makes sense to kind of let that thing calm down.
- 12:09The question is if Carson Wentz goes 3 and O, what do you do
- 12:12coming out of that by against the Philadelphia Eagles?
- 12:15That that is a question I think the Vikings would be happy to
- 12:18answer because it would mean there's a tough decision because
- 12:22Carson Wentz has played well, which means their playoff hopes
- 12:25and positioning in the NFC North is still in good standing.
- 12:29But certainly a lot of questions coming up Sunday was not good
- 12:33for JJ McCarthy and got even worse when we found out the
- 12:36ankle and through popped up. Certainly want to get that
- 12:38running game going and we're behind the depleted offensive
- 12:41line. That's tough to do a couple of
- 12:43now with Aaron Jones's injury. Jordan Mason, though, a lot of
- 12:46people love to pop out of him. I know he was kind of one of
- 12:49those fantasy dark horse kind of guys coming into the season.
- 12:51A lot of people like, what do they have with Mason and with
- 12:54Jones at this point in his career?
- 12:56If Mason plays well, could he become RB-1 even when Jones is
- 12:59back healthy? Yeah, I think so.
- 13:02I think there is an argument to be made that he maybe should
- 13:06have been RB one right off the bat this season.
- 13:08I think no disrespect to Aaron Jones, but the way the Vikings
- 13:12have talked about running the ball seems to jive more with how
- 13:15Jordan Mason runs the ball then how Aaron Jones runs the ball at
- 13:18this point in his career. I do think when Aaron Jones is
- 13:21back, he will have a role. But I think if Jordan Mason can
- 13:24take the, you know, bull by the horns here, run with this
- 13:27opportunity, he could carve out a needs for himself where he's
- 13:32the guy getting a lion's share of the carries.
- 13:35And Aaron Jones is just affecting the offense in a more
- 13:37dynamic way and kind of on a spot by spot basis.
- 13:41But yeah, I think Jordan Mason should have been more involved
- 13:44in the offense in the first couple of weeks.
- 13:46And I think he'll be more heavily involved in the offense.
- 13:49Certainly now it's feeling doubt, but over the next few
- 13:52weeks? It's been alarming to watch the
- 13:55offensive line be as porous as they've been.
- 13:57Quite honestly, I thought that this was going to be a strength.
- 14:00They rebuilt it. Obviously, Darasaw hasn't been
- 14:02able to play so far this year. What's the likelihood he's able
- 14:07to answer the bell against Cincinnati this week?
- 14:09Dane. Yeah, hard to say because you
- 14:12can't really get a read on on where he's at and in the
- 14:14recovery process. He's questionable week 1.
- 14:17He's out Week 2. He logged a full practice
- 14:19yesterday. That's good.
- 14:21If he logs a full practice today, I would say the chances
- 14:26are getting more likely that he will make his debut on Sunday.
- 14:30However, if he if he's limited in participation like he's been
- 14:34at times over the last couple of weeks, why?
- 14:37I'm kind of working under the the idea or the thought that
- 14:41he's probably going to need to log full participation days both
- 14:45Wednesday, Thursday, Friday before the Vikings let him go.
- 14:48Doesn't make sense to limit him on the practice field and say,
- 14:52all right, Sunday, you're ready to go.
- 14:54So I think the next check mark, at least from my perspective,
- 14:58is, is he a full go today? If he is, then it will be is he
- 15:01a full go tomorrow? If he logs three straight full
- 15:04days, I would say there's a chance.
- 15:07If he's limited at any time before then, I would say we're
- 15:10probably waiting another week. What about Ryan Kelly, because
- 15:13this is concussion and something that he's struggled with in his
- 15:16career. Not a talent thing, but we're
- 15:18talking about a brain injury. I know we're better
- 15:20understanding of that, but you know, there's been just so many
- 15:23stories of it. What can you tell us the latest
- 15:25on that front? Yeah, he didn't practice
- 15:27yesterday and I would be absolutely stunned if he plays
- 15:30on Sunday. He's in the protocol right now.
- 15:33I don't know the intricacies of how they're working him through
- 15:37the protocol specifically because each case is on a case
- 15:40by case basis. However, 4th documented
- 15:44concussion if he plays on Sunday, if he's able to somehow
- 15:47clear the concussion protocol before then, I would probably
- 15:51take a sex an exception with that, just with the way kind of
- 15:55his career has gone at this point.
- 15:57I think we've learned so much about brain injuries.
- 16:00I out the floor to peace on the field on Sunday, which is
- 16:03obviously a huge loss for the Vikings.
- 16:05No doubt. What about the defense?
- 16:06Obviously Bernard Van Ginkkel. He's out.
- 16:09Harrison Smith is yet to play with an illness.
- 16:11It's just odd. What about those 3?
- 16:14Bernard Van Ginkkel and the Hitman.
- 16:17Yeah, Bernard, he suffered an oblique injury in the game.
- 16:21It looked way worse in real time.
- 16:24He popped back up. He actually ends up getting a
- 16:26sack in the game. He was limited yesterday in
- 16:29practice, but I think he'll be fine.
- 16:30There's no indication that that's going to be something
- 16:33that knocks him out this weekend.
- 16:35Andrew Van Ginkkel, he's working through the concussion protocol
- 16:38still. He was limited yesterday.
- 16:40I think he's trending in the right direction.
- 16:43But just looking at how Andrew Van Ginkkel situation was
- 16:45handled last week, I think you can get a good idea that Ryan
- 16:49Kelly will not play. Van Ginkkel was in the
- 16:51concussion protocol, missed the game.
- 16:53He is, I think graduated kind of into the next step of that.
- 16:57So I think there's a chance he's ready for Sunday.
- 17:00And for Harrison Smith, it's still something, it's a wait and
- 17:03see kind of thing. How much can he handle?
- 17:06He's getting close. I know that the details of of
- 17:09the personal health issue aren't aren't made public, but I think
- 17:12he's getting close. He was limited in practice
- 17:14yesterday. I think Harrison Smith is
- 17:17someone, though not necessarily in need of a of a full week of
- 17:22full participation. He's been around the block, he's
- 17:24done this. If he's ready to go and and
- 17:27deemed OK to go by Sunday, I think they'd just feel
- 17:31comfortable throwing him out on the field.
- 17:33So Carson Wentz with the start on Sunday, he will make history.
- 17:37He will be the first quarterback to make six starts for six
- 17:39different teams in six years. We've seen KOC do this before,
- 17:44right? Guys off the scrap, even get
- 17:46guys off the practice last year, Dobbs with a half week of
- 17:50practice and there he is. So the anticipation is, well,
- 17:53he'll be able to do it with anybody.
- 17:55Do you have that same confidence with Carson Wentz?
- 17:58I do because Carson Wentz has played 94 or made 94 starts in
- 18:03the NFL. You you don't have.
- 18:05There aren't simply a lot of backups out there with that
- 18:08level of experience under the under their belt.
- 18:13Carson Wentz is not the player he was when he was the number
- 18:15two overall pick out of NBSUI. Think that's obvious at this
- 18:19point. He's a decade into his career.
- 18:22He's going to back up over the last two stops of his career
- 18:25with the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 18:28But I do think experience matters here.
- 18:30And even though it's a crash course, he had been admitted to
- 18:33us yesterday. This is kind of unlike anything
- 18:35he's ever gone through. Arriving kind of so late in
- 18:38training camp, learning everything in, taking
- 18:41everything, thinking you're going to be the backup and then
- 18:43all of a sudden you're the starter.
- 18:45But I think you can really lean on that experience with Carson
- 18:48Wentz. Doesn't mean he's going to go
- 18:50light up the world and throw a 350 and four touchdowns, but I,
- 18:54I, I think the offense will function with him leading the
- 18:57charge. I think just simply because he's
- 18:59been there, he's done that 94 starts, like I said, that that
- 19:03that is experience that frankly, not a lot of players in his
- 19:06situation would have. So I think that bodes well, the
- 19:10Vikings, as they try to get him wrapped up and ready to go.
- 19:13Switching gears just a couple of minutes on on hockey, Karil
- 19:16Caprisaf had an opportunity to become the highest paid player
- 19:19in the history of the NHL. He turned that down for whatever
- 19:22reason with the salary cap looking like it's going to go up
- 19:24at one point, maybe he didn't want to leave money on the table
- 19:27or term. I know Bill Guerin, the GM, he
- 19:30met with the media today. Caprisaf met with the media
- 19:32today. He's not going to say anything.
- 19:34I wouldn't think his agent might have already also been there.
- 19:37I guess Jane just brought broadly what's, what's your take
- 19:40on this thing? Do Wild fans should they be
- 19:43concerned at this point that Capri Soft may not be a member
- 19:47of their the team that they root for?
- 19:48For you know, till his career comes to an end or certainly the
- 19:51foreseeable future? Yeah, I mean, I think it's
- 19:54probably fair to start worrying just because until he's under
- 19:58contract with the way things have kind of gotten out
- 20:02publicly, I think it it's certainly worth.
- 20:06You know, sounding at least a little bit of the alarms right
- 20:09now because there's just so much unknown still credit to Bill
- 20:14Garen. He said all the right things.
- 20:16He said, you know, obviously they want to sign girl Capri saw
- 20:20they've made that very clear to him and credit to Carell.
- 20:24I mean, he he kind of took it as a chance to say all the right
- 20:29things as well. He loves being here.
- 20:32He thinks they can win the Stanley Cup here.
- 20:34But all of those things that are being said publicly are just for
- 20:38appearances as far as I'm concerned.
- 20:41What what's going on right now behind the scenes is something
- 20:45that until this negotiation is ironed out, I would be a little
- 20:49bit concerned. I'm not saying he's going to get
- 20:51traded tomorrow, but I'm saying it's worth the level of concern
- 20:56until this thing is figured out. It's gotten to that point.
- 21:00So Bill Guerin says this won't be a distraction, that the team
- 21:04won't let it become a distraction.
- 21:05But the truth is, it's going to be a distraction until he puts
- 21:09pen to paper. Good stuff.
- 21:10Cincinnati on Sunday, Cincinnati, Minnesota course,
- 21:13you can hear the game right here.
- 21:14Paul Allen has the call of that one and company kick off, of
- 21:19course, at noon. Dane.
- 21:20Great stuff as always. Appreciate the conversation.
- 21:23twincities.com, Saint Paul, Pioneer Press, beat writer for
- 21:27the Vikings and obviously keeping an eye on the Wild and
- 21:30the Twins and everything else as well.
- 21:31Thank you, Dane, have a great week.
- 21:33Appreciate it. Anytime, guys.
- 21:35Thank you very much. Dane Moussutani St.
- 21:37Paul Pioneer Press. All right, good stuff out of
- 21:39Dane good stuff out of Dave Sinican going to be in
- 21:42Bloomington tomorrow. That's pretty cool.
- 21:43Or Saturday. Absolutely, absolutely good for
- 21:46him. All right, take your time out.
- 21:48We'll come back. We'll head W to Lincoln.
- 21:51Simple join us all Wolverines Huskers.
- 21:54That's conversation is next. Millerine Condon on the Iowa
- 21:57Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon.
- 21:59Welcome back just past 130 on a Thursday coming up at the top of
- 22:05the hour off the bench. Lucas and Sean take you until 5
- 22:09trends Plays of the day still to come as well.
- 22:11Obviously Thursday Night Football.
- 22:13Guessing that will be a part of his plays of the day.
- 22:16Well, 2:30 Saturday afternoon, it's Michigan on their way to
- 22:22take on the Huskers of Nebraska. 3 and O versus 2 and 1, Stephen
- 22:27M simple Husker illustrated. He joins us Sip.
- 22:30I can't wait for this football game.
- 22:32I'm guessing the fan base kind of feels the same way, right?
- 22:35It's been good to, you know, to see the the squad, whether it be
- 22:38Cincinnati over Arrowhead or the two last weeks.
- 22:42Not that deepest waters competition wise, but here we
- 22:45go. Here comes Michigan, here comes
- 22:47Big 10 play a lot of cache surrounding this game sip good
- 22:51to talk to you how are you and what's the.
- 22:53Buzz, oh, Buzz is significant. I've had a bunch of coffee
- 22:57that's part of it, but I can't literally wait for the game.
- 23:03I'm I'm we're the similar age and I still, I feel like a
- 23:10little kid on weeks like this. I can't wait till 2:30.
- 23:13I can't wait till that first series.
- 23:15You know that, you know, it's probably Bud Crawford going to
- 23:18lead him out of the tunnel, all of that.
- 23:21I mean, it's this is, oh, it's a big one here.
- 23:23We got a big one this week 1. Yeah, and you look through this
- 23:26is the time we've heard about Matt rule year #3 they took
- 23:29steps in year #2 last year and now it's kind of put up for shut
- 23:33up time. This is a Michigan team.
- 23:35We saw Underwood in the road environment.
- 23:36It wasn't certainly a lead against Oklahoma.
- 23:39We know this is going to be a charged up atmosphere as well
- 23:41for him in this one. It feels like SIP we've talked
- 23:45about for the last two decades. Excuses are over.
- 23:47Go out and win this football game.
- 23:49And that's what it feels to me. I think there are so many
- 23:51advantages, so many of those check marks in the Nebraska
- 23:54side. You can't afford to lose this
- 23:56when the time has to be now. Now, I appreciate the thought
- 24:05provoking manner in which you asked that question.
- 24:07I, I don't know that I'd say it, put up or shut up at this.
- 24:12Since we've been playing this game for 20 years.
- 24:13I mean, they got to do something, don't they?
- 24:17Well, I guess I mean, I don't I'll split hairs with you a
- 24:20little bit if you don't mind. I, I would say I need some
- 24:23evidence. I do that a lot around.
- 24:26I don't say if they if they lose this, I'm done with this.
- 24:30One. Well, yeah, that's fair.
- 24:32Yes, yeah. Shut down the program, it's
- 24:36over. Yeah, don't do that.
- 24:38Yeah, get. Rule out here.
- 24:39No, I I understand where you're coming from.
- 24:42I would just say I'd like some evidence now and I think it's OK
- 24:47to ask for evidence. It's tier 3 and you know,
- 24:52there's still Trent. Now it is this is a weird kind
- 24:55of a weird team at Nebraska because they have some veterans
- 24:58playing key roles, but it's a young team.
- 25:01So I mean, I'm with you in Michigan.
- 25:05Hey, that's the big thing to drive home is Michigan's not
- 25:09that's not this isn't hardball Michigan.
- 25:11It's really not. There's obviously there's good
- 25:15players over there and they're deep on the D line, but they're
- 25:18not really good up front on offense.
- 25:20They don't have I mean, Nebraska's think about this for
- 25:23a second. Nebraska's got better receivers
- 25:24than Michigan. I don't.
- 25:27That's the way the world's changed the last quarter
- 25:29century. But I, I, I, it's big and I want
- 25:35evidence. I do.
- 25:36But I wouldn't say it's a must win or put up or shut up or
- 25:39anything like that. Where where the angle of the
- 25:41game that I'm kind of focused in on SIP is the quarterbacks and,
- 25:44and how where they were ranked in their respective coming out
- 25:49years. I mean, Underwood, the number
- 25:50one quarterback. I think Rayola was the number
- 25:52one quarterback his year. Of course, Arch Manning's all on
- 25:55those lists as well. But these are two upper echelon
- 25:58quarterbacks coming out of high school and going into college.
- 26:01I think this might be match up that's going to have a lot of
- 26:04intrigue, yeah. Yeah, it is.
- 26:07I mean, I think if you just want to get to the essence of this
- 26:11game from I guess if you're looking at Nebraska's defense
- 26:15versus Michigan's offense, the essence is kind of football one
- 26:19O 1. It's you want to put some heavy
- 26:24pressure on that freshman quarterback in the den of
- 26:27Memorial Stadium. You know, you want it to, you
- 26:30want it to be, you want to get him a little rattle, but you
- 26:32know, you know, you can't do it if it's second four can't do it
- 26:36if it's third and one can't do it if you don't get the third
- 26:38down, right. So this is all about just the
- 26:41pain. You guys know who he is.
- 26:42He's #22 from this easily their best back.
- 26:46They don't really have their backups, not even close.
- 26:50So it's just the same. I think #22 is the key to this
- 26:53game. And if they, if you hear we
- 26:56watching it, you guys will be watching it.
- 26:57And you know what, you know what the deal will be.
- 27:00If it's they come out and they're Michigan moving the line
- 27:03of scrimmage and it's, it is it's second and four
- 27:06consistently or second five or second three, then what?
- 27:10There's really no pressure on this quarterback.
- 27:13And then the other layers of that conversation is if you can
- 27:16put pressure on him, then OK, he got pressure on him, but also
- 27:22he's throwing into your strength, which is the
- 27:24secondary. So that's that's a critical
- 27:27layer to this. Nebraska's got a real secondary.
- 27:30It's good. It kind of takes me back to the
- 27:32Fellini years there. That's a real good secondary.
- 27:36So make him, make him throw into that bat.
- 27:41But you know, Hank, Hank's getting 175 yards kind of a
- 27:45moot. Point, right?
- 27:46Yeah, he he was really good against Oklahoma.
- 27:48I don't know how many yards he rushed for, but I know he broke
- 27:50a hundo in that game. He was one of their better
- 27:53players. 60. Six.
- 27:55He got 100, he got 140. But 175?
- 27:59Changes the equation. Yeah, I'll say.
- 28:01Nebraska's giving up 66 yards per game through the air, which
- 28:05is ridiculous, and we go back to the Cincinnati game to look.
- 28:07I didn't watch a snap against Akron or Houston Baptist outside
- 28:11of the little 3 minute recap. That's all I saw in either of
- 28:14those games. 66 is ridiculous. I mean, that's Deacon Hill
- 28:17territory we're talking about there.
- 28:19But we just lost, oh, we lost Sep.
- 28:20He didn't like it. He doesn't want to talk about
- 28:22the past defense. No, he does.
- 28:24He's ringing back right now. We'll we'll get him back on.
- 28:27Yeah. We got some more thing mower
- 28:28ground to cover with sip trench plays of the day coming up in
- 28:30about 12 minutes. By the way, let's get him back
- 28:33on here. We lost you there momentarily,
- 28:35brother. OK, I got you.
- 28:38Please drop. So I was asking about that 66
- 28:40yards per game. I mean, that's not anything that
- 28:43you're going to be able to live on by any means.
- 28:45But you mentioned this is the strength of the team.
- 28:48Just how good is it though? I mean, are we talking about an
- 28:51elite level that they're going to be able to shut down
- 28:53everybody throughout the course of the year that good a pass
- 28:56defense? No, I mean, it's not listen, you
- 29:00know how Trent, you got you guys watch a lot of football.
- 29:02The conversations are more complicated.
- 29:05They're not Nebraska is not very good up front.
- 29:08So you know, I don't know. They can't just hold up against
- 29:12a team that has a lot of time to throw.
- 29:15Nobody, but nobody can. If if Nebraska were good up
- 29:19front, it would look like a Fellini defense.
- 29:22So if you remember the Fellini defenses that were really good,
- 29:24like, oh, nine, 2010, that area, this this is that type of
- 29:29secondary. But they don't have Sue, you
- 29:33know, they don't have Jared, Chris, they don't have those.
- 29:37So they don't even even approaching that.
- 29:40So it's a little different kind of conversation.
- 29:42But no, they're not they're not good enough to overcome
- 29:47anything. But they're it's a, you know,
- 29:49they're they're very good. It's like I said, the best I can
- 29:52say, Trent, if you think of those Bellini teams that were so
- 29:55good in the secondary, if they they would pretty well in that
- 29:59era. Since he was one of my favorite
- 30:02players when he was in college, how did they take me back to the
- 30:05Indomican Sioux? How did he get to Nebraska?
- 30:07Sip. What was the what clinched the
- 30:09deal for him to go to Lincoln NE?
- 30:12I mean, he was, you know, he's an Oregon kid.
- 30:16I don't hit me with a question I can't honestly answer.
- 30:21He wasn't. He was highly recruited, but
- 30:25not, not crazy, you know, it wasn't crazy.
- 30:27And he didn't really do much early in his career here.
- 30:31He didn't really materialize till the end of his sophomore
- 30:35year. But I don't, I don't, you know,
- 30:38so long ago. I don't remember what I'd have
- 30:41to. It'll probably hit me right when
- 30:43I hang up, but. I.
- 30:45You know how that goes. I mean.
- 30:49Well, one thing fairly obvious, because Nebraska was still going
- 30:54pretty good back then, you know, so they could, they were
- 30:57getting, hey, he was part of a run of guys, a run of classes
- 31:02that Nebraska was recruiting at a super high level.
- 31:06So you could sell that they were, I mean, they were like a
- 31:10top 10 recruiting machine for a while there.
- 31:13Then that tailed off to like everything else.
- 31:16I'm looking right now and it said a big reason for his
- 31:20commitment was his relationship with John Blake, who was at, of
- 31:23course, Mississippi State before that and came on.
- 31:26And that was one of the main reasons.
- 31:27That and the chance to play early.
- 31:29But I'm looking through some of the recruiting articles here.
- 31:32John Blake, how about that? Gave him a little something
- 31:34there with Sue. What a player.
- 31:36Yeah, the late John Blake and and the late John Blake was on
- 31:39that staff and he was a incredible recruiter.
- 31:42I mean, that was that John in the essence was that he was AD
- 31:48line coach, but a fabulous, fabulous recruiter.
- 31:52And Bill Callahan put guys like John Blake and Bill Bush.
- 31:58Those guys were amazing recruiters.
- 32:01So that's that's how it all went down.
- 32:03I want to ask you some about you said early in when we had you
- 32:07got you here, Sip Bud. Crawford's going to lead the
- 32:09team out. Just remarkable fight last
- 32:12weekend. What does he mean?
- 32:13He's an Omaha guy, but what what does he mean to the state of
- 32:17Nebraska? I mean, he's one of their own.
- 32:18He's a multi champion. It's boxing.
- 32:21It's not what what's was, but but he's still one of those
- 32:24names you recall in the, you know, the later stages of his
- 32:28career. What will that be like when he
- 32:30leads him out of the tunnel? Is he that revered?
- 32:33Yeah. Now hold on, not for sure that
- 32:35he leads the match, OK. We think he did against Colorado
- 32:39last year, remember, and we think it could be the case.
- 32:44I'd be kind of surprised if it's not, but I don't think they want
- 32:47to announce it or anything like that because, you know, that can
- 32:51be quite a scene when he just materialized.
- 32:54You know. What does he mean to Nebraska a
- 32:57lot? He is he's very true to Omaha
- 33:01means he's very he's a very low key champ.
- 33:06Like he's he's out and about. He's not he doesn't make himself
- 33:11a big deal. He's he's really a like his
- 33:15humility is striking to me for someone who's now you have to
- 33:19say that he's the best power profound fighter in the world.
- 33:24He lives in Omaha, NE. He's never lived anywhere else,
- 33:27probably never will. His mom still lives there.
- 33:31It's just that's that's he's Omaha and he hey, he loves the
- 33:35football program here. I mean, like it's it's a
- 33:38legitimate relationship, which is why I think you'll see him
- 33:43and it'll oh, hey, can he be there for that?
- 33:47The stadium, But it'll be crazy. It'd be nuts.
- 33:49It's going to be crazy. 2:30 Saturday afternoon.
- 33:52Sip. I am locked and loaded and Iowa
- 33:54plays on Friday night and the clones are off.
- 33:56The slate is empty for me on Saturday, pal.
- 33:59Other than your game, a Big 12 game early and a Big 10 game
- 34:02prime time Indiana Illinois sip bye week next week.
- 34:05But you're not off with Miller and Condon.
- 34:07We're going to track you down and and get the lay of the land.
- 34:10All right, buddy. Yeah.
- 34:12I look forward to hearing your guys's thoughts on this.
- 34:14I really. Do I don't I look?
- 34:16Forward to that. Put up or shut up, SIP.
- 34:18There you go. See you pal.
- 34:22See you buddy. Good to talk to you.
- 34:24Steven M Simple Husker, illustrated on three media.com,
- 34:28covered the Huskers for decades. Do you have that feeling,
- 34:30though? I think Nebraska's going to win
- 34:32this weekend, so maybe I don't. You don't.
- 34:34What about Michigan that says? I think they learned a lot
- 34:39against Oklahoma. That does help, absolutely,
- 34:41yeah. Because Underwood was not good
- 34:43in that football game. I just haven't been blown away
- 34:47by. I mean, the Cincinnati game, if
- 34:49it would have, should have, absolutely.
- 34:51I mean. Can make some play on the ball
- 34:52in the end zone or we're having a completely different
- 34:54conversation. And Can you imagine if they
- 34:57started O and one again? Yeah.
- 35:00I guess we've seen it before, so it's not that difficult to
- 35:02imagine. Not a real big leap to get
- 35:04there. That's funny.
- 35:05You're good today, good every day.
- 35:08Hayes is. He's a, he's a hell of a player.
- 35:10He's a hell of a player. 11. Yep.
- 35:12Oh, it's going to be fascinating.
- 35:13I can't wait. Miller and Condon, 145.
- 35:16Trent's plays the days on a He's on a roll, folks.
- 35:18He is on a heater right now. Let's even keep it going.
- 35:21Miller and Condon on Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O in
- 35:26the Iowa Sports Radio Network. All right, Miller and Condon
- 35:29welcome back final couple of minutes of our Thursday show
- 35:32tomorrow. Kay, Kurt Heinz Palm Bama.
- 35:38That's the line up of guests that will join Trent tonight to
- 35:40talk football. Pretty good 4 pack.
- 35:43Yeah, I'll say by the way, this is we got football before this.
- 35:46I don't want to look past this weekend 'cause it's gonna be
- 35:49bananas. It can't wait.
- 35:50Penn State. These are at Circa already
- 35:52released. Penn State will open as a
- 35:53three-point favorite over Oregon in the white out of Penn State,
- 35:57Georgia 3 1/2 over Alabama. Those are the 2 two of the
- 36:02bigger games that they posted the Lions for as of now.
- 36:06Kind of like the Ducks. I really like the Ducks.
- 36:09I can they win? Can they win the conference?
- 36:12Yeah, I think so. Can they win the national
- 36:14championship? Yeah.
- 36:15Good. Let's get your plays of the day.
- 36:18Another puff play. No, it's.
- 36:20Already been. It's already in My Portfolio,
- 36:22yeah. 3 plays for tonight and nothing in baseball.
- 36:26What I didn't do the card for all the day games going on not
- 36:30realizing and didn't cobble anything together.
- 36:33Nothing at night grabbed me. So we go here first to the West
- 36:37where the Indiana Fever go back on the road.
- 36:40It has not gone well against Atlanta this year outside of
- 36:42game two of the series. I think it comes crashing down.
- 36:45I'm going to lay the seven without.
- 36:46End it right? Yes, Game 3.
- 36:49This is the decider tonight to college football.
- 36:53Asked you about the Owls. It didn't do anything for you.
- 36:55It does for me. Give me rice.
- 36:56I'll lay the two as they go on the road to Charlotte and
- 36:59wrapping things up, there's a 12 1/2 in the market and I'm gonna
- 37:04grab it. Is there really I'm?
- 37:05Gonna grab it with the Dolphins. It's just divisional game.
- 37:09Short week, maybe? Hopefully.
- 37:13Oliver Milano both out for buff. Final just in 31 three Daniel's
- 37:18fired has to find his own way home back to Buffalo.
- 37:21But I'm, I'm gonna grab it. I just, I, I think it's.
- 37:24That's a ton of points. It's a ton of points for a
