0:00
[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, welcome back.
0:01
[SPEAKER_00]: This is Dave Hyde on the Nothing to Hyde podcast part of the out-to-pass shared network with Kim Bo Kamper here and I don't know Kim.
0:11
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to talk about the Dolphins game loose 15 to 10.
0:15
[SPEAKER_00]: in Minneapolis.
0:16
[SPEAKER_00]: You were at the game.
0:18
[SPEAKER_00]: To me, this was the first game I really felt disappointed in.
0:23
[SPEAKER_00]: Going to the fourth quarter, it's a 12 to 10 game entering the fourth.
0:27
[SPEAKER_00]: The Dolphins three plays, two yards, one minute of possession in the fourth quarter.
0:34
[SPEAKER_00]: The Vikings, and not a good offense, they ranked the worst offense in the league, and they had two series,
0:43
[SPEAKER_00]: uh... fifteen plays for sixty yards eight minutes and eleven plays for seventy four yards and uh... they ran out the clock at the dolphins one year and this if you're sitting on the on the day i think i just saw dj hawkins and catch another pass to walk you back on it
1:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Go down to the one yard, what's he going down to the one yard like score?
1:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
1:05
[SPEAKER_01]: He's not good enough to play the sport football.
1:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, God.
1:09
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that that was, uh, I don't know about you, but that that was a weird game.
1:14
[SPEAKER_01]: I knew going in, um, you know, it was, you could, you could, you could, you could, you could, you could read the game easily.
1:20
[SPEAKER_01]: They were the 31st or 32nd.
1:24
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, worst offense in the in the league, you know, wherever, whichever you're, where are you talking to?
1:29
[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's 31 or 32, which is nothing to argue about.
1:32
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no, there's no glory in being number 31 or 32.
1:36
[SPEAKER_01]: But, um, so, so you knew, you knew that the dolphins defense, that's just last week.
1:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I thought the dolphins defense woke up a little bit.
1:44
[SPEAKER_01]: and started to get a more aggressive and certainly they did in this game for sacks in the game.
1:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And so so so you kind of knew that going in, but then you knew when the flip side going coming on the other side, their defense was just it was just locked down, you know.
2:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and they're growing, they're throwing blitzes all over the place and doing this and that so you kind of knew you kind of knew it was going to be that game where it was going to be close, but um, it just, you know, from from the opening kick.
2:16
[SPEAKER_01]: To first of all, you go out there and you get um, three, three back to back to back special team blunders, where you let it, you let it, you know kick off return for 49 yards.
2:32
[SPEAKER_01]: But you get another return for a 38 or 40 whatever that is, you know, you're fumble the ball on the, you know, you're fumble the ball and you almost get it, you almost get it, you let the, let the Vikings jump on it and score touchdown.
2:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And so from then on, it just became, you know, offense, you know, trying to trudging through the mud to try to get something happened and all he kind of comes up big with the, uh, uh, with the hundred yards and the touchdown.
3:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but it just, it just was, it was, it was an odd odd odd odd game.
3:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And it just, you never, you never, you never felt like anything was going to really blow up in that game.
3:13
[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, it was like, you know, dying from a thousand paper cuts or whatever it is.
3:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean,
3:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about that special teams.
3:20
[SPEAKER_00]: I remember early in a season when a season with expectations that the Dolphins had a special team game like that and I said, are they going to let this keep going on after a few games and then it's been a few guys said that this is where a special team's coach gets fired.
3:42
[SPEAKER_01]: There are lines and where do you draw the line you're building a culture you're saying here's the standards and you keep coming out and special teams yeah as been a problem all season you know the first game special teams were So there's special teams have been an issue less less of an issue last week but then here they come back again and made up for it in the first first quarter of the game.
4:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, even day, I go back to, I go back to the, the, the, the preseason games and we're sitting there and going and like every, you know, everybody is, it's almost, it's almost like, you know, when, well, so I was coaching my daughter's a softball team was like the seven eight nine year old kids, right?
4:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, you know, and I'm new to the little league world, you know, at that point, other than my, other than my youth when I was there, but it was a youth or youth when I was there, one of them.
4:50
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they were going to play unless I coach, right?
4:52
[SPEAKER_01]: So I signed the coach.
4:53
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I picked, I picked all their friends, you know, friends and sisters and this and that, and we believe that haven't fun, but then I step into the first game, and there's this, this, this lady on the other side who's at the coach there, and she's like, she's like a bulldog.
5:09
[SPEAKER_01]: She wants to take every, everything, you know,
5:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And so this, this, this is why I'm liking it to, to the special teams coach says, you know, yeah, we've worked on this all the whole time, you know, you know, everyone knows what to do.
5:23
[SPEAKER_01]: You know how to run the bases and everything.
5:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And so the first girl gets up, she hits a ball out to right field and everybody on the field, including the catcher.
5:31
[SPEAKER_01]: ran out to to right field.
5:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And they got it and they had nowhere to throw the ball to.
5:37
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I like in what happened to us.
5:41
[SPEAKER_01]: That opening quarter where every goddamn thing you did on special teams blew up in your ass and you're just going, what the fuck is going on here?
5:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Now is that, is that, by the way, great use of profanity there, you know, I mean Paul Maurice Paul Maurice says, sometimes, you know, he's asked, well, is he on the bench?
6:03
[SPEAKER_00]: He'll say, sometimes I just felt the need that the team needed to hear some of our fans.
6:08
[SPEAKER_00]: And then he doesn't need some in it, because I mean, there has to be standards here.
6:14
[SPEAKER_00]: And we realize, look, they're picking up guys off the practice squad of other teams every week, right?
6:22
[SPEAKER_00]: third of the roster just like the top two thirds of the roster has issues.
6:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
6:28
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where the special teams comes.
6:30
[SPEAKER_00]: So are we excusing it or are we saying as I am there are stand you can allow this to happen.
6:38
[SPEAKER_01]: No, you can't, and at some point, you know, it's some point, it's, it's got to, you know, it's, it's, it's okay.
6:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, if you had one game like that opening game, yeah, well, another, but, but three in a row, and and probably not really good, and I guess a 49ers very much, they're either either.
6:56
[SPEAKER_01]: So, so they've been like the, they've been the flat tire that's on that, on that, on that fear for wheel, wheel car, right where it's just, it's just, it's just loping around and, you know, in constant problems for everybody else, but, but at some point, somebody's got to stand up and say, hey, this got to be better than this.
7:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm, you can't, can't go along, look, the, the, the one thing
7:23
[SPEAKER_01]: right everything we played so so that's a little that's a little solace there but well it can just city beat the raiders and two undefeated teams but your your point is they played pretty good teams yes yes you know the one thing I know about this team they didn't quit this team does not quit
7:44
[SPEAKER_01]: They fight till the end and they're still battling out and then you know when there's a clock right out.
7:51
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't like that.
7:52
[SPEAKER_00]: They're not good enough to quit, right?
7:53
[SPEAKER_00]: They're young.
7:54
[SPEAKER_00]: They're not.
7:55
[SPEAKER_00]: They're not.
7:56
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they should be fighting.
7:57
[SPEAKER_00]: They should be fighting.
7:58
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's nice.
8:01
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's a nice part of it.
8:03
[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
8:04
[SPEAKER_00]: But yesterday, let's let's let we beat up the special teams and my point is when are
8:13
[SPEAKER_01]: that you play a bad team and they beat you.
8:16
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the point I'm getting.
8:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I got it.
8:17
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
8:18
[SPEAKER_00]: So I man, bad teams are coming up.
8:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
8:20
[SPEAKER_00]: We're, we're, we're not, not next week.
8:22
[SPEAKER_00]: They play the bangles, but after that, the jets and we'll see down the line, the chargers.
8:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Woof.
8:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Chargers are going to be a little embarrassing now.
8:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Again now, you got two.
8:33
[SPEAKER_01]: You got, you got two of our, you, you got.
8:37
[SPEAKER_00]: You got two of our exes, we played an ex, we put the domes played an ex yesterday, Brian Flores, and you talk about how do exes go, how to be happy, you know, you, you, you just go on and live a good life, which Brian Flores, uh,
8:54
[SPEAKER_00]: He's got the defense right now, so you know from the beginning.
8:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he was a great coach for the dolphins I'm still upset that they would get us in because I I like I know he I know he's too hard on the team and this and that and whatnot But but he he's pro proving that he's a quality coach, right?
9:13
[SPEAKER_00]: The disappointing thing to me.
9:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm at the dolphins is
9:17
[SPEAKER_00]: his personal skills became larger than his coaching skills and for whatever reason and nobody help why why do you say that Dave why why why why do you want this good so because he wanted to this place seen
9:33
[SPEAKER_00]: and have his team, you know, well, we, we games and then, well, let's, let's start.
9:38
[SPEAKER_00]: He fired a coach for practices into an offensive, a veteran offensive line coach, because he wouldn't play Michael Deeter.
9:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the coach was right in retrospect.
9:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
9:47
[SPEAKER_00]: He fired a lot of support staff, which was unnecessary.
9:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
9:53
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what I mean, is interpersonal skills on how to be a head coach, but as a coach, as a one loss,
10:04
[SPEAKER_01]: So what is easy, is he supposed to be a camp counselor and, you know, in a pity pat with these kids or, or is he supposed to build a football team that wins football games?
10:13
[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's some middle ground that truly didn't fire a coach in a system coach for 30 years, 30 years, okay?
10:21
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a way to get another job.
10:24
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a way to be a head coach.
10:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, to be a boss.
10:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
10:29
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm with you, Brian Flores, I thought was a great coach, you know, exesos, getting the most out of limited rosters at times.
10:38
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you want to go off on to it at halftime, go for it.
10:42
[SPEAKER_00]: It'll be as true.
10:43
[SPEAKER_00]: It'll probably deserve it.
10:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
10:45
[SPEAKER_00]: But there are limits as I said on on just indiscriminately firing people because you can't.
10:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
10:53
[SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully that's something he's
10:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the dolphin offense, um, you can take this side.
11:02
[SPEAKER_00]: They ran the ball, but they didn't make plays 10 points.
11:05
[SPEAKER_00]: So now Aleph had four weeks 13 13, um, what to 10 to 10, uh, and I think that's right to 10 points.
11:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So let me ask this.
11:16
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm, I'm reading this.
11:18
[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm reading this, you would, you, you thought the dolphin didn't play very well at yesterday.
11:23
[SPEAKER_00]: I think if I'm setting the culture the standard of what I want that culture the fourth fourth quarter they got run over when the games on the line and their offense look I know There's limited playmakers okay and and Malik will it Malik will have showed on the one-place cram on out to Chris Bell for the touchdown.
11:44
[SPEAKER_00]: It's called back
11:46
[SPEAKER_00]: what he can do that few guys in the league can do and keeping that play a lot now.
11:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Can he see the field better at times.
11:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Can he make some plays in the pocket and but you have to grade it he has no he has limited throw it.
12:00
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know where to go.
12:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he'll think he's got all young receivers and and you know the the the hard thing for us right now.
12:07
[SPEAKER_01]: looking here, you know, we're not looking at the tapes today like they are probably right now.
12:13
[SPEAKER_01]: We're not looking at that and so what you see as you see one thing, maybe you see a replayer too and you make a judgment.
12:21
[SPEAKER_01]: But when you break down the films, it usually shows up a lot differently than people think.
12:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Not as bad as you, thought it was, not as good as you thought it was, you know,
12:33
[SPEAKER_01]: But I just, you know, I don't see, I just, I'm in Malik's, Malik's fine with me.
12:43
[SPEAKER_01]: I want thing I'd like to see out of him a little bit more is to stand tall and step into a throw and then throw it like because to sometimes he's like,
12:56
[SPEAKER_01]: get the ball up there and let it go and lean into it, you know what I mean?
13:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Seems like he's always like, and look, he's getting pressured all the time.
13:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so he's having to move back, he's having to work around the pocket.
13:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, we talked about Austin Jackson a couple of weeks ago, he could talk about it again in yesterday.
13:15
[SPEAKER_00]: He gave up two sacks.
13:16
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, and running the ball, why is the offensive line is physical and you could see they're open and holes and and all the Gordon was 100 yards of recipient, you know, good yard, good running by all the Gordon too, but pass pass, I mean Patrick Paul had three holding penalties in the first half, Jackson gave up two sex and and, um,
13:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
13:45
[SPEAKER_01]: So they're nine, nine, nine, nine penalties for 55 yards.
13:50
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not the 55 yards.
13:52
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the plays that you made that got called back, or you know, you, you, you, you, you, you get up his first in 10.
13:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Now I'll send someone jobs first in 15.
14:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever you make a place there's a plan and all comes.
14:04
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's all and it's look.
14:06
[SPEAKER_01]: It's happening every every every week.
14:08
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think I think they've been statistically with with the with penalties if my memory 8 8 or 7, the second one 8 again.
14:19
[SPEAKER_00]: And now you got 9 for 55 I need to put up that takes no talent wall again.
14:24
[SPEAKER_00]: That's damn you damn right.
14:25
[SPEAKER_00]: That's exactly right.
14:27
[SPEAKER_00]: This team could use that because.
14:30
[SPEAKER_00]: you know, let's get let's get a little discipline.
14:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
14:34
[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, you can go down the offensive stats 37 plays yesterday.
14:39
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
14:40
[SPEAKER_00]: So they had 67 the week before against Kansas City.
14:43
[SPEAKER_00]: That puts it into perspective.
14:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Can can they do anything on offense?
14:48
[SPEAKER_00]: What do you do on offense?
14:49
[SPEAKER_00]: You maybe get Caleb Douglas back.
14:52
[SPEAKER_00]: That would help.
14:52
[SPEAKER_00]: But
14:53
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, I mean, look, we didn't mention that the, you know, you lose your best best player in your football team, DeLan H and we didn't even talk about that with that and then with that a help there would have been the same thing, we can only, we can only guess about that.
15:07
[SPEAKER_01]: It would certainly hurt.
15:08
[SPEAKER_01]: It would help.
15:09
[SPEAKER_01]: It, yes.
15:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's good as all he was running the ball and his,
15:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Devon agents a weapon, where is he going to line up?
15:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Is he going to catch a pass?
15:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Is he going to run the ball inside outside speed?
15:23
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's a completely, he's a weapon.
15:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Where's Ali as a running back?
15:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I just think offensively, the receivers and will us need to get in sync.
15:36
[SPEAKER_01]: in a game-time situation, they're four games in now.
15:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And you really haven't had an exceeding opportunity where Willis wasn't having to move some time almost every, every, every pass play to stay healthy and then, and then one of the receivers do, you know, do they know,
15:55
[SPEAKER_01]: the blitz break off.
15:56
[SPEAKER_01]: So when they see you guys in trouble, you know, they know a place to go to where where your quarterback feels comfortable throwing the ball to.
16:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we're seeing that.
16:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And to me, even with with Devon out,
16:11
[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen all he, and I and Jalen Wright is going to, you know, when he gets a little healthier, he's going to get some playing.
16:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, you've got to bring in Malik Washington because really have no one else.
16:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they've got a couple running backs on the on the practice squad, and I don't think they're in any hurry to bring those guys up.
16:28
[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, with that offensive line, and you got to get more
16:33
[SPEAKER_01]: you've got to get more out of out of that, out of that whole offensive line and running game and just say to hell with it, we're just going to blow them, you know, just just, you know, we can't worry about the bond with the guys who's not there.
16:45
[SPEAKER_01]: We got to go out and find a way to win.
16:48
[SPEAKER_00]: This is what you signed up for this year, though, right?
16:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it is, it is.
16:52
[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm not upset because you know, I see I see rookies that are going to be
17:01
[SPEAKER_01]: becoming grown men in this league, you know, you, you came proctor, Jacob Rodriguez, Tafs out there making plays, you, your Chris bells out there making plays, you, you've got guys, we've got guys that are going to be good.
17:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but, but, but they're, but they're, you know, they're, they're, they're, their babes in the woods right now, you know, and so I don't know if they know that, that, that, that Malik moves this way,
17:26
[SPEAKER_01]: where do I go to get open to or do I just keep running my route I don't I don't know I'm not saying that because I don't sit in the and watch those medium rooms and and I don't get on like I don't spend all night and you know you know with a with a amount and do and you know a five pound thing of child chocolate ice cream trying to dice it I'm trying to dice it trying to dice it game play game tape you know for
17:55
[SPEAKER_00]: past kindergarten, and now he's going, oh, this guy's going to climb up the ladder and catch that baller, you know, or the two gap, or the, oh, they're a 13 person L. You're right in my territory now, because I, before the game, I were a pizza bowl, and I, and this, you know, I know we will do your food reviews and all that, but let's, let's get into my food review, because I go, I pick up a pizza before the game and bring it home.
18:21
[SPEAKER_00]: And you know I'm paying with credit card and they they flip that credit card marker to me and it's it's no tip 15 this I always stop at this 15% 20% 25% and I'm thinking wait I'm picking it up I'm driving in here picking it up.
18:40
[SPEAKER_00]: And you want and and I get tipshame.
18:43
[SPEAKER_00]: I get tipshame, I get tipshame.
18:45
[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to be cheap.
18:46
[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to be cheap.
18:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Stand up on a hot pizza of it all day.
18:49
[SPEAKER_01]: You keep skate.
18:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I give him 15%.
18:51
[SPEAKER_01]: You're sending a couple of dollars, man.
18:54
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, why should I have to do that?
18:56
[SPEAKER_00]: I give him 15%.
18:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I'm shamed.
19:00
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm tipshame.
19:02
[SPEAKER_00]: But do you what do you do, Bowdo you?
19:03
[SPEAKER_00]: You tip on what do you do?
19:05
[SPEAKER_01]: I do.
19:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I do.
19:07
[SPEAKER_01]: I do.
19:07
[SPEAKER_01]: You feel good about yourself afterwards.
19:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes I don't, sometimes I don't.
19:14
[SPEAKER_01]: But food service, you know, food service to me is a different thing.
19:18
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, we have our favorite pizza place.
19:20
[SPEAKER_01]: I call it, I go pick it up, I look at that thing and I'm going really, and I go, all right, I give you a 15% or whatever, and just be on my way and, you know, but so let me extract that a little bit.
19:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Let me give you this one, right?
19:37
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're in Napa for the game against the 49ers.
19:42
[SPEAKER_01]: We're there for seven days or whatever.
19:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And my wife comes out and stays with me.
19:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I do the work I have to do for the programs I do.
19:54
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we had a chance to just kind of go around and see Napa and go do dinners and stuff.
20:00
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm doing a lot of ubers, right?
20:02
