- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Thanks for joining me on another
- 0:05podcast episode. So grateful that y'all are here
- 0:09today. In the verses we're going to
- 0:12read through, we are going back to square run to the foundation
- 0:16of our faith because I think if a lot of us are honest, it can
- 0:21be easy to drift and not all at once, but slowly and subtly we
- 0:27can start focusing on how to live the Christian life so much,
- 0:32on what to do, what not to do, how to grow, that we can
- 0:37unintentionally move away from the very message that saved us.
- 0:43So we are going back to the beginning, back to the gospel.
- 0:47And I'm going to go ahead and dive right in, reading through
- 0:51first John chapter 2, verses 24 to 27.
- 0:58So you must be sure to keep the message burning in your hearts.
- 1:03That is the message of life you heard from the beginning.
- 1:07If you do, you will always be living in close fellowship with
- 1:12the Son and with the Father. And He himself has promised us
- 1:17the never ending life of the ages to come.
- 1:21I've written these things about those who are attempting to lead
- 1:24you astray, but the wonderful anointing you have received from
- 1:29God is so much greater than their deception, and it now
- 1:33lives in you. There is no need for anyone to
- 1:37keep teaching you. His anointing teaches you all
- 1:41that you need to know, for it will lead you into truth, not a
- 1:45counterfeit. So just as the anointing is
- 1:48taught, you remain in Him. OK, First off, John says keep
- 1:56the message burning in your hearts, not just to remember it,
- 2:03not revisit occasionally, keep it burning.
- 2:07So what is that message that he's talking about?
- 2:10The gospel, The gospel that Jesus is God's beloved Son,
- 2:17fully God, fully man, that he came and lived the life that we
- 2:22could not live here on this earth.
- 2:24He died the death that we deserved, took on the punishment
- 2:29and the penalty that we were meant to take on so that our
- 2:33sins could be completely, permanently erased.
- 2:37And that we are saved by grace, through faith, not by striving,
- 2:44not by effort or performance or getting everything right.
- 2:49So that is the message that we hear from the beginning.
- 2:54And John is saying, do not move on from it.
- 2:58He's saying this because we can. We can get so focused on
- 3:03growing, improving, becoming more disciplined that the gospel
- 3:09might become something we already know instead of
- 3:13something we're actively living in.
- 3:16But Paul said, I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the
- 3:21power of God. And he kept preaching it over
- 3:25and over again in all of his letters to all the different
- 3:29churches. He never outgrew the gospel, so
- 3:32neither should we. We must remind ourselves of it
- 3:36every single day because I believe if we don't, our hearts
- 3:42can slowly become calloused. We forget the weight of what
- 3:47we've truly been saved from, and with that, the wonder of what
- 3:52we've been saved into. And This is why we should not be
- 3:57ashamed to share it. We don't just have to have some
- 4:00polished version of our testimony, but we share what God
- 4:05has done and what He is still doing.
- 4:09Because as long as you're alive, your story is not finished.
- 4:14God is the author and He is still writing it, and there is
- 4:18so much power in sharing it as it's unfolding, even in the
- 4:22really hard things that you're learning, being vulnerable and
- 4:26open about, hey, this is a hard season that I'm walking through
- 4:31and this is what God is teaching me.
- 4:33But it's not the end. People don't need your
- 4:36perfection. They just need the truth.
- 4:39They need the gospel. Something that I've been
- 4:44personally reflecting on a lot in my prayer time is how easy it
- 4:48is to turn faith into striving, trying to grow more, to learn
- 4:54more, to do more. And yes, we are called to grow
- 4:59in knowledge and increase in wisdom.
- 5:02But if we're not careful, that can become a checklist.
- 5:08In that striving, we can actually drift from the
- 5:11relationship with God itself. And y'all, God did not create
- 5:17you just to check off spiritual tasks.
- 5:22He created you to be with Him, to enjoy Him in fellowship.
- 5:28And it's as you enjoy Him, as you remain in Christ, that you
- 5:33naturally begin to reflect Him because you get to know him
- 5:36better and you become more like him.
- 5:40So you don't have to force it and you don't have to
- 5:43overcomplicate the relationship. John says remain in him.
- 5:51In the word remain, it means to stay, to continue.
- 5:57As time passes by, as seasons of life change, you gain more
- 6:03knowledge, more experience, more encounters, or even learn more
- 6:08spiritual language. It can be easy that even without
- 6:12realizing it, the fire that once burned within you can start to
- 6:17dim and get softer. But we are not called to be
- 6:22lukewarm. We are called to keep it hot,
- 6:26boiling, blazing, to keep the message in our hearts burning.
- 6:33And how do we remain? Well, if we look back to John
- 6:37chapter 15, Jesus tells us abide in me.
- 6:43This communicates we are to stay connected, stay close, stay
- 6:48dependent on the Lord and we have been entrusted the Holy
- 6:52Spirit to help us do exactly that.
- 6:56Jesus says in John 14 verse 26 that the Holy Spirit teaches us
- 7:01and reminds us of everything that He has said in His ministry
- 7:05on earth. So when this passage says
- 7:10there's no need for anyone to keep teaching you, it's not
- 7:13saying that we don't need pastors or leaders or that we
- 7:17just stop learning. It's John warning US against
- 7:22false teachers and deception through that because the Spirit
- 7:27within you will always, always lead you into truth, not
- 7:34something fake. So yes, we do learn from Spirit
- 7:38filled teachers, but we also do not rely on people above the
- 7:43Spirit of God within us. We stay anchored in His word and
- 7:48we stay led by the Spirit. And I just want to think about
- 7:53this for a second. Jesus Christ, the same Christ,
- 7:58the Son of God, who was seated at the right hand with his
- 8:02Father. He is living and breathing up in
- 8:05heaven, and he's also living within you.
- 8:09If you're a believing Christian, this is personal.
- 8:14That means you can trust him. You can rely on him for
- 8:18direction, for strength and guidance, and for wisdom.
- 8:23It's not some distant belief system, it is a living and
- 8:29active relationship. So today I just want to
- 8:35encourage you guys, come back to the beginning.
- 8:39Keep that message burning in your hearts day-to-day.
- 8:44Do not let time, life, seasons, spiritual growth, or literally
- 8:50anything else in this life 'cause that fire to fade away.
- 8:55Stay childlike in your trust even as you increase in maturity
- 9:01and simply remain in Him. So here's a few reflection
- 9:06questions I'll give y'all before I move into prayer Number one.
- 9:12Have I allowed the gospel to become familiar instead of
- 9:16something that is actively burning in my heart #2 am I
- 9:21striving in my faith or am I truly abiding and enjoying
- 9:25relationship with God #3 what does it practically look like
- 9:32for me to remain in Jesus today? So with all that, let's close.
- 9:39Dear Father God, thank you for the gospel.
- 9:45Thank you that it is by grace through faith that we are saved,
- 9:51not our own effort and not anything that we could earn.
- 9:57Would you help us tend to this fire in our hearts to keep the
- 10:01message alive and burning? Would you protect us from
- 10:07drifting, from striving, and from ultimately losing sight of
- 10:13what matters most? Holy Spirit, I ask that you
- 10:19would lead us into the truth, guard us from deception, from
- 10:25false teaching, and would you teach us and remind us of who
- 10:29you are and what you have done. Jesus, show us how to remain,
- 10:36how to stay close, dependent, walking with you daily.
- 10:41I pray that you would keep our hearts tender and soft and that
- 10:46our love for you would be ever burning.
- 10:49We praise you. We submit this Friday to you,
- 10:54Lord, in Jesus name, Amen. OK y'all.
- 10:58Well, that's today's episode. I hope that it leaves y'all with
- 11:02some encouragement, some inspiration, and that the Lord
- 11:06would keep revealing things to you as you go about the rest of
- 11:09your day and as you move into the weekend.
- 11:12I'll see y'all in the next episode.
