- 0:09Right, Good afternoon. Welcome, Nora Condon on a
- 0:14drizzle filled, awful, misty, cold, chilling day.
- 0:20But we welcome you to the Iowa Sports Radio Network wherever
- 0:23you're listening. That's what it's doing in
- 0:25downtown Des Moines. Anyways, we will talk some
- 0:28sports in the next couple of hours and glad you've chosen at
- 0:31least to spend some of that time here with Trent Condon and
- 0:34myself, Ken Miller on our program this morning.
- 0:37We will talk to our friend Matt Rudy.
- 0:38He is a Michigan State alum. He was in Madison Square Gardens
- 0:41last night watching Michigan State to do battle with Kentucky
- 0:46in a pretty good basketball game.
- 0:48Michigan, they looked really good.
- 0:50It was a fun night of sports last night that coming up in a
- 0:52moment. So we'll talk to Matt Rudy.
- 0:54We'll do basketball, we'll do football.
- 0:55Kind of put a cap on the on the golf season as he is our golf
- 0:58guy. He's covered PGA for decades.
- 1:03So he'll join us coming up here at about 12:25.
- 1:06Then Mitch Holt is the voice of the Chiefs.
- 1:08They've got a massive game at at home this weekend against the
- 1:11Colts, Colts and the Chiefs. Mitch Holt is joins us Papa
- 1:14John's Central Iowa sponsors that our number 2 David Kaplan
- 1:19will join us. Not sure if you'll join us right
- 1:21at the top of the second hour of the show.
- 1:24He's got an event. He's emceeing an event and
- 1:26hopefully it'll wrap up on time that he can give us the full,
- 1:29oh, 15 minutes or so than he normally does on Wednesday.
- 1:32Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors that show de Menaga back with
- 1:36the Cubs as he decided to stick around, obviously to a lot of
- 1:39bears conversation with Cappy that comes up to kick off our
- 1:43number 2 and then Matt Norlander from CBSSports.com.
- 1:47He covers college basketball, basketball.
- 1:48He, too was at the Garden last night.
- 1:51We'll talk to Norlander about college hoops, kind of get his
- 1:53take from a national perspective, what he's seen
- 1:56earlier. I love when we get these
- 1:57national guys, whether it be Norlander or Doster, some of the
- 2:01other guys that we rely on. Always good to go outside the
- 2:04state borders and see how they see things.
- 2:06But Madison Square Garden was fun last night watching that
- 2:09young Duke team take on Kansas. That was kind of a nail biter
- 2:13for a while. But the early game was good and
- 2:16good to talk to you. And how are you, Trent Condit?
- 2:18Doing well, finally. I saw it well in college
- 2:20basketball last night. We got both sides of that.
- 2:22Yeah, 5 and O night. Did you get that big?
- 2:24Oh yeah. Nice.
- 2:26What was the team? You lay in the lumber, I think.
- 2:29Well, we had. 5 1/2. We had the Skyhawks last night,
- 2:32the UT Martin as they got home against Florida State, getting
- 2:3520 1/2 in that one. But we got a long ways to dig
- 2:38out of the hole. We are still deep into the hole
- 2:40here, over there. It's a start.
- 2:41It's a start. Had Rhode Island, Michigan
- 2:44State, Duke and Iowa. Well, that was nip and tuck for
- 2:47a while. Pulled away how?
- 2:48Much did you watch? All of it.
- 2:50It really did good for you. I watched probably 18 minutes
- 2:53combined, maybe 12 in the first half, six in the second-half.
- 2:57There was it was a great night of sports.
- 2:58It really was. The games at at Madison Square
- 3:02Garden had my full attention. The College Football Playoff
- 3:05rankings. I was locked and loaded there.
- 3:07My jets were playing so I was dipping in and out of that.
- 3:09I never saw snap em action. I will rectify that tonight.
- 3:12Will you? Yes, because it's the final and
- 3:14there's good basketball being played at the United Center.
- 3:17And and before that, Arizona, UConn.
- 3:19When do they play at 6:00? I mean, that's a top five
- 3:21matchup. You're going to watch that
- 3:22garbage. Yeah.
- 3:23I have to. You're going to Arizona, UConn.
- 3:26No, I know I'll watch. I'll, I'll flip back and forth,
- 3:28but I got to watch from action, you know, I'm an action guy.
- 3:31And this is it. The curtain comes down.
- 3:33Thank God. Now, why does it bother you?
- 3:37I know it's not great football and there's nobody in the stands
- 3:40and the announcers you've never heard of.
- 3:42And if you get assigned a game in the a game in the Mac on a
- 3:46Tuesday or Wednesday are probably not long for ESPN.
- 3:49Maybe, you know, maybe whatever. But but nonetheless, yes.
- 3:53So, yeah, it's a great night at college hoops.
- 3:55Trent. It is with that game.
- 3:57And and then there's one that follows the Zags play tonight.
- 4:01Well, Illinois, they got a big one themselves.
- 4:04So Illinois tonight at the United Centre gets Alabama.
- 4:08That's FS1, correct? Yes, both the games are on FS1,
- 4:11so both the big games tonight will be on there.
- 4:14So good night at college basketball.
- 4:15That's where I will be. You can watch that awful
- 4:17football. I was, and I watched some awful
- 4:20basketball. Not to Iowa in particular,
- 4:22because you know what I noticed? And it's, I'm guessing
- 4:25obviously, that they've talked because Sturtz only played 33
- 4:28minutes. And I love the fact that
- 4:30Mccollum's doing this because, and this is no offense to the
- 4:33Valley, none whatsoever, it's a little more physical in the Big
- 4:3710. And Bennett Sturtz is going to
- 4:39be, obviously, I don't want to say that this team will go as
- 4:42far as Sturtz takes them, but he's obviously a pretty big part
- 4:45of it. And if you can save a little
- 4:46wear and tear on those tires, you know, leading into Big 10
- 4:50player throughout Big 10 play, maybe that'll help.
- 4:53I think that's the only way to see it without Bennett starts
- 4:55this team. Not very good, no.
- 4:57And he saw that during the stretch when he wasn't in there
- 4:59and it felt like but McCullum was gonna pull his hair out.
- 5:02But but he saw him. It just what a player he is
- 5:05True. He is amazing.
- 5:07Hmm and to have this level of player he is for?
- 5:10One year and that's that's the kicker.
- 5:12Yeah, I'm. Going to enjoy this.
- 5:13No I don't. I hasn't had a point guard like
- 5:15this in 30 years. No, it's been a long time and he
- 5:18is special, there's no doubt about that.
- 5:20The way he gets to the hoop, that little underhand dipsy dude
- 5:23that he's got in his bag and he sees the floor so well and God,
- 5:26he's fun to watch. But I'm anxious to, you know,
- 5:29see some a real opponent on the other side of the floor.
- 5:33So Hassan plays a little bit more.
- 5:35Now it's down 33 borders. I'm glad you brought that up, I
- 5:37meant. To work his way back into shape,
- 5:39it looks like. So what?
- 5:40What was was that? Itch.
- 5:41Yeah. I mean, you can look budgy.
- 5:44He looks out of shape and needs to work because he was hurt a
- 5:47lot during the summertime. So that's going to be a pink
- 5:50component. And we know how important
- 5:52conditioning is. You got to play defense and you
- 5:56got to be well conditioned and when you're working way back
- 5:58because we thought coming into the year, both him and Fool
- 6:00Garris were going to be starters.
- 6:01Fool Garris, a nice player. And Fool Garris is excellent and
- 6:04he's going to do a lot of nice things this year.
- 6:07When will that change? Will it change?
- 6:09Will. What we had in the minutes.
- 6:12Yeah, I mean minutes, starters, those kind of things for.
- 6:15Hostin. For both those guys, they're
- 6:17both coming off the bench. Two guys I think we had maybe in
- 6:20Penn that were going to be starters coming into the season.
- 6:23That obviously has not happened. Vulgaris played 16 minutes
- 6:27yesterday, Hostin played. He was single digits.
- 6:29I don't remember. No, he played 20.
- 6:30Did he play 20 minutes? Did he really?
- 6:32Yeah, OK. And vulgaris had 20 what?
- 6:37Low 20s. 26. 26 Yep, that's about right it.
- 6:43Doesn't matter if you get your name called right, but I think
- 6:46that's gonna happen. Yeah.
- 6:47Brendan Housen, he had opportunities go other places.
- 6:50Yeah. He didn't come here to come off
- 6:52the bench. No.
- 6:52You look for glares and I think they're going to get there early
- 6:56in the season. Go with the guys that you know,
- 6:58guys that you trust. And as you're building trust
- 7:00with both of those guys, I think eventually both of them will be
- 7:03starters for this team because. Koch's the only one that's
- 7:05playing right in the starting lineup that he that he didn't
- 7:07have. Last year, exactly.
- 7:09The lone holdover out of the scholarship guys from a year
- 7:11ago. But then you go, well, who goes
- 7:13to the bench? Probably Howard.
- 7:15Howard hasn't played. It's been OK.
- 7:17He's had flashes, but he's been OK.
- 7:20He would definitely be 1. And I like Banks coming off the
- 7:22bench. There's something about Tavion
- 7:24Banks and and having that kind of athlete guy that can get to
- 7:27the rim like him. Iowa hasn't had many guys like
- 7:29that. So that's probably the direction
- 7:31I would look is that Howard and Banks would be the guys then
- 7:34coming off the bench and then put full Garrison house and
- 7:36eventually into the starting lineup down the road.
- 7:39We'll get another tune up tomorrow night.
- 7:41Chicago State's even worse. Won a game.
- 7:43That Southeast Missouri State and then after that, then we'll
- 7:47know. We'll we'll get to know against
- 7:49Old Miss. It's a good Ole Miss team and a
- 7:51great coach. Chris Beard is.
- 7:52Yeah, there's a really good coach.
- 7:53For all his transgressions and questions and everything else
- 7:56that goes along with Chris Beard.
- 7:57Ole misses they're they're going to be willing to take some
- 8:00chances on their coaches aren't. They no doubt.
- 8:03The Lane Kiffin saga continues to March on.
- 8:06You know, somebody mentioned this when when it comes to the
- 8:09College Football Playoff rankings, in particular when it
- 8:11comes to Old Miss that what what do they do if Kiffin's not
- 8:14there? Because there's precedent set
- 8:17that they, you know, and I don't remember what school, but I've
- 8:21been Florida staying that lost that lost anyways, there's been
- 8:25there's been punishment or a team has been, you know, ranked
- 8:32lower because they it's not the quarterback they don't have it's
- 8:34their head coach. I don't know if that'll come
- 8:37into play like I where do you think he's going?
- 8:39Do you think if it's going anywhere or is this all a, you
- 8:43know, I'm just going to throw this out there and and make them
- 8:46come back and renegotiate? Do you think he stays or you
- 8:48think he goes to LSU? I think he's gone to LSU.
- 8:51I don't know if it's LSU or Florida, but I think he's gone.
- 8:53This has gone too long now for him to turn around and say no,
- 8:58no, just kidding. I'm going to come back here.
- 9:01It feels like he's out the door, but it's just a feeling.
- 9:05I mean, nothing that I've read or anything that makes sense
- 9:08definitively the reason behind it.
- 9:10Here's the thing, though, for Kiffin, all right, you got, you
- 9:13know, his dad's angle, being in Florida, in Tampa for so long,
- 9:16where he kind of became most renowned, though you see in lots
- 9:20of other places, too. I mean, Monty Kiffin was the
- 9:22name when you're talking defensive coordinators.
- 9:27There's no guarantee, though, that he's ever going to have an
- 9:29opportunity like this, that there's going to be a chance
- 9:34like this. Florida sired what some people
- 9:37thought, a couple of home run coaches and it hasn't happened,
- 9:39right? LSU Well, we just saw what
- 9:42happened with Brian Cale. There are no guarantees and now
- 9:45you're this close. Right in Oxford Ms. You're this
- 9:50close to not just a playoff, but a chance to make a run.
- 9:54This team could win a couple games.
- 9:55I. Think so.
- 9:56Right path. Something opens up, injuries
- 9:59happen, lots of things can go. And to turn it down for what?
- 10:05More money? A better chance is this a
- 10:08better? I don't know.
- 10:09I don't know either like you said.
- 10:11Florida said they've hired two home run hires, so they thought
- 10:15neither one of them worked out. Brian Kelly, that was a big
- 10:17splash getting in from Notre Dame that didn't work out.
- 10:21Obviously. We'll see.
- 10:22We'll see where it goes. Let's do the College Football
- 10:25Playoff ranking when you, I don't know if you watched it
- 10:27live when you saw it, what was your biggest take away?
- 10:34Biggest. Take away still is Miami.
- 10:37They're moving up. But that far behind Notre Dame?
- 10:41Too many schools in front of them.
- 10:43Probably. Because if you're going to jump
- 10:45them over Notre Dame, you have to move those other teams up in
- 10:48between them. Alabama, Are they going to lose
- 10:51to Auburn? Well.
- 10:53Don't think so. I don't think so.
- 10:54It's. Jordan hair, though weird things
- 10:56happen there. We've certainly seen that in
- 10:57the. Past.
- 10:57Absolutely. B Wire, Utah.
- 10:59Kick six rings a bell. One of those two probably going
- 11:03to fall out if they lose the Tech in the championship game.
- 11:06Now Utah might not get there and still be able to finish the year
- 11:08at 10:00 and 2:00. You know, This is why I wish
- 11:11that the Big 12 would have come up with somebody else to put on
- 11:13the committee because this reeks.
- 11:15It's Utah's AD, you know, just reeks where What's Oklahoma
- 11:18State's Ed doing? I know he's got a coaching hire.
- 11:21OK K State. I mean, find somebody else,
- 11:24right? I don't.
- 11:25I don't like the smell of that one.
- 11:28What is it about Notre Dame? That they like.
- 11:30What is it that you look at this team and say, yes, that's the
- 11:339th best team in the country? What can you point to besides
- 11:36losses? You can't.
- 11:39There isn't any. Well, yes you can.
- 11:41The helmets. That's it, That's it.
- 11:44It's the same thing with Alabama, who has lost to an
- 11:47awful Florida State team. You know, apparently that
- 11:50doesn't matter. Well, they are.
- 11:52They're off to, but where are they?
- 11:54Does the Sagarin matter to you at all because they're 31?
- 11:57OK. So they're better than you
- 11:59think. I mean, A5 and five was some bad
- 12:01line. They got some awful losses.
- 12:03They lost to. But they've also beaten four
- 12:05teams in the top 25, all right? And that's more than anybody.
- 12:09So wins more than Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon combined.
- 12:13So wins matter. I guess, I mean, I don't know,
- 12:16it depends what what team we're talking about.
- 12:19And and that's. The and that's been your
- 12:20argument forever. It drives me crazy.
- 12:22It absolutely drives me nuts, because losses don't matter for
- 12:25Alabama. Only wins matter.
- 12:27Losses, good losses matter for Notre Dame.
- 12:31If you go through and all these maturations of all this, I just
- 12:34want to know what are we doing? Give me some data points, give
- 12:38me some reality before the stupid show begins.
- 12:41Tell me what we're looking for. And then you can freak out even
- 12:44more and you can say, no, you got this wrong because it's all
- 12:48opinion. That's all this is opinion
- 12:50based, all right. And they can manipulate and they
- 12:53do, and they change on the fly. And one thing that mattered the
- 12:56week before doesn't matter one. Thing that mattered in his
- 12:59teleconference following the unveil yesterday, change by the
- 13:03time the teleconference ended yesterday, the way he answered,
- 13:06what was that one? I don't remember what it was,
- 13:08but I think was Nicole Auerbach asked a couple of questions.
- 13:12Are we getting to a point where they're starting to be,
- 13:15especially if we stay at 12, and I think that's more likely than
- 13:19not that we're starting to wonder, does the group of five
- 13:23really belong? They're going to be a three
- 13:25touch. They they have to though, you
- 13:27have to or you're going to run into legal issues.
- 13:31You have to have that slot available for them.
- 13:35This is the way that they were able to get through.
- 13:36Why? Don't they have their own
- 13:37tournament? Who wants to play in that?
- 13:40What are you going to get for that?
- 13:41What? Team well, I don't want to have
- 13:4212 but I mean if you if the money's right and the television
- 13:45is there and I got to think ESPN is is looking for 'cause I got
- 13:49million networks for crying out loud.
- 13:52Whoever represents the the group of five, they're going to play
- 13:56the five seed, which is right now Texas Tech.
- 13:58So they're going to be a three touchdown dog.
- 14:00Yeah, I get it. You know, upsets happen, but.
- 14:05I want access. I want access for the little
- 14:07guy. I don't have.
- 14:09Are you the majority? Probably not.
- 14:12People like brands. People like Alabama's and Notre
- 14:14Dame's of the world. They don't like Tulane and Boise
- 14:18State. James Madison, yeah.
- 14:19Yeah, there's still a path for Duke.
- 14:22I hope it happens. Is there really help me?
- 14:25So I went out for I took Jed out for his piss this morning.
- 14:28All right. And you and Bam are going crazy
- 14:30on my in our little texture. So what did I miss?
- 14:33He just. Well, he asked something about.
- 14:36Oh, well, he started and I love Bama.
- 14:38You know I love Bama. Yeah, but he started with did
- 14:41Alabama get screwed? Let's see where.
- 14:43Should Where did he want them to be?
- 14:44I had a Notre Dame. Let's see.
- 14:48Well, I want to see. Did Bama get screwed?
- 14:50That's exactly the terminology that he used.
- 14:52Seems like they're setting them up to have to win the SEC
- 14:54championship game. For what?
- 14:55No, no, they they don't. This is this is Bama.
- 14:58This is SEC fan Bama talking here.
- 15:01They're not screwed by any means.
- 15:04I told him if Mississippi State had this exact same resume,
- 15:07maybe 16th even. With four teams over pass with a
- 15:13win over Georgia, you really believe.
- 15:15Oh, there is not a doubt in my mind with two.
- 15:17Losses, yeah. But I think that the the four
- 15:20wins over top 25 teams, if it was just two wins, yeah, I could
- 15:25buy that. But they've got four wins,
- 15:27including as good a win as anybody's got right.
- 15:30I mean, and as bad as lost as anybody's has in the top.
- 15:32OK. But it was week 1 and I don't
- 15:34know if that matters in the Gen. Florida State.
- 15:36They wanna play the games. If if here's another example,
- 15:39we'll come up with excuses. Well, it was week one.
- 15:41OK then don't playoffs. So why should why should Texas
- 15:43play Ohio State week? No absolutely right, same thing
- 15:45because that's hurting them. That's probably keeping them out
- 15:47of the playoff at no doubt point light of Michigan playoff, which
- 15:50is why I hate this system because we should be getting
- 15:52these games and. We come up with the same crap as
- 15:54just a stacking order. Again, a number of losses.
- 15:57There's not any depth to thinking with these people.
- 16:00It's just stacking up. Well, they have two losses and
- 16:02right, they're going to go here. Look at your standings, three
- 16:05teams at the top, always 0 losses.
- 16:07Next up, your next four teams all with one loss.
- 16:10Then you get into the two team mix and then it's Oklahoma,
- 16:13Notre Dame, Alabama with two losses.
- 16:15It's back to the same group. Think that we have gone through
- 16:18a committee is supposed to solve this.
- 16:20That's why you have a committee. Just go back to the BCS, go back
- 16:23to the numbers. How does?
- 16:25Miami get in, obviously they're going to have to win, get to the
- 16:28ACC, right? I don't think so.
- 16:30You don't think that they would have?
- 16:31To. I don't think that's a
- 16:32necessity, no. How do they how do they leapfrog
- 16:34all those teams in front of them?
- 16:36Well, BYU, Utah, one of them's going to lose 1.
- 16:37Of them's going to lose, so there's.
- 16:39One, you need another upset. You need Oklahoma to lose.
- 16:41You need Alabama to lose. It's not a.
- 16:44Alabama has Auburn left, and then whoever the hell says they
- 16:47play Sanford, they normally play Sanford, yeah.
- 16:51The other component with this that drives me crazy is why they
- 16:56continue to put Miami in this bracket.
- 16:59Here's what the bracket would look like.
- 17:00No, it wouldn't. They're not the ACC champion and
- 17:04there's not a. This would be go back to last
- 17:06season, go back to last year in college basketball and remember
- 17:10came down to the wire for Iowa and Nebraska just to get into
- 17:13the Big 10 turn. And if you were putting together
- 17:17something for basketball, the team's not even going to
- 17:19qualify. And with it get it on.
- 17:21This would be like putting a mid major in there because they're
- 17:24the highest ranked mid major. They don't have a path to
- 17:26actually get in a large bid, but you're putting them in there
- 17:28week after week after week, even though they're not even going to
- 17:31qualify for the conference tournament.
- 17:32They're not going to make it. They're not going to make it
- 17:35unless carnage happens in the. So Miami right now is the
- 17:37highest ranked ACC team? So they put them in there, but
- 17:41they're not going to be the conference champion.
- 17:42It drives me absolutely Batty. So how do they play for their
- 17:47conference championship? How does Miami get to the
- 17:49conference championship? Can they?
- 17:50They can. All right, so right now, if you
- 17:53just calculate with the favorites over at our favorite
- 17:55site B ball.notnothing.net, Georgia Tech Virginia SMU
- 17:59finished seven and one. It'd be Virginia against Georgia
- 18:02Tech in the ACC Championship game.
- 18:05So we got to find some losses. For both Virginia and Georgia
- 18:08Tech. Well, let's just start here.
- 18:09Let's start with Georgia Tech, OK, because they played Georgia.
- 18:12That won't matter to get to the ACC.
- 18:14Let's say that Georgia Tech loses to PIT this week.
- 18:16All right, not. Crazy.
- 18:19That leaves Virginia and SMU, both 7 and one.
- 18:21Easy enough. They're both in, so we got to go
- 18:23a little bit further. Let's see something that's not
- 18:26crazy. Can Louisville beat SMU?
- 18:28Yes. Absolutely.
- 18:29All right, so we've only where's the game?
- 18:32I'm not sure, but so we just changed two things.
- 18:35Pit over Georgia Tech, Louisville over SMU this
- 18:39weekend. That leads to Virginia, the only
- 18:42seven in one team. Yeah, and they would play.
- 18:44And there is a five way tie at six and two involving SMU,
- 18:48Georgia Tech, Pitt, Miami and Duke.
- 18:50And Duke still alive. And the team that wins the
- 18:53tiebreaker is your Duke Blue Devils.
- 18:56So if Duke wins, beats Virginia. And they just played last week,
- 19:01last week last 'cause I took Duke and I got clobbered.
- 19:04That's it. That's all it takes.
- 19:06You take it one step further. And it's your favorite
- 19:08conference. I'm glad you have to pay
- 19:10attention to it. You take it one step further
- 19:12though, and Duke gets beat this week by UNC.
- 19:15Then Miami in this scenario finally would be a path.
- 19:20We're talking about 3 upsets that need to happen this week in
- 19:23order for that to happen. Well, talk to Matt Rudy on the
- 19:26other side. He's a Michigan State grad.
- 19:28He was in Madison Square Garden to watch that game last night.
- 19:30We'll do that, put a capper on the golf season with our buddy
- 19:33Matt. Rudy Macholtis is the voice of
- 19:35the Kansas City Chiefs. He'll join us at 12:45.
- 19:38Cappy from Chicago, And then I'm Matt Norlander from
- 19:41CBSSports.com, where he covers college basketball.
- 19:45Miller and Condon, it's a Wednesday.
- 19:47We're glad you're with us. We'll be right back on Des
- 19:49Moines Sports Station 106.3 KXO. I'm Marie Connon, welcome back.
- 20:01Coming up on 12:30 on a Wednesday.
- 20:04Mitch Holt is the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs still to come
- 20:06as this Michigan State's fights. What are the better fights?
- 20:09On is it you like? This.
- 20:10I like this one all right. I know our guest, Matt Rudy, who
- 20:14joins us for all of the majors, the Ryder Cup.
- 20:16He's our golf guys at Michigan State grad.
- 20:18As I mentioned, he was at Madison Square Garden last
- 20:20night, anxious to pick his brain on that.
- 20:22But we start with football. Good to talk to you, Matt.
- 20:25Rudy, I know that you don't want to.
- 20:28What started out so promising, right?
- 20:30I mean, there were three, you know, at one point and haven't
- 20:31won a game since. They've replaced their
- 20:33quarterback. Well, other than that, how was
- 20:37the play? What's gone wrong with this
- 20:38team? Matt, good to talk to you.
- 20:41You know, it's good to talk to you too.
- 20:43I think across the Big 10, when you see what Indiana is doing,
- 20:49that just pushes pressure out onto other coaches who have
- 20:54either it's a slower timeline to revitalize the team or or
- 20:58they're not doing as good a job at revitalizing A-Team.
- 21:01It just shows. I think the skill sets you need
- 21:04to be good at this to be to be a good coach now are different
- 21:08than the ones even five years ago.
- 21:10And I think you're seeing a lot of, you know, coaches like Nick
- 21:13Saban, for example, look at it and say, you know, I don't know
- 21:15that I like how this is going in terms of what I'm good at doing
- 21:19or what I like doing. And so we're seeing this shake
- 21:22out where coaches who can, you know, you can go recruit in the
- 21:26portal and you can, you can bring players in and you can
- 21:29build a cohesive unit quickly. That's just as big an advantage
- 21:33as tactical X's and O's and, you know, and, and recruiting 18
- 21:37year olds from high school. So I think it's, it gives a lot
- 21:40of hope, I think to any program that you don't have to, you
- 21:44know, it's not going to take you a decade to dig yourself out of
- 21:47a hole. So as bad as it is for Michigan
- 21:49State, I don't even know that the coach is fundamentally the
- 21:52issue. I think if you're going to spend
- 21:54some money and you have a good athletic director and you have a
- 21:56good plan, you could change things around by next year.
- 22:00So I mean, I think that that should give everybody hope.
- 22:02Whether you're an Iowa fan or Michigan State fan, doesn't
- 22:04matter. If you get those pieces in
- 22:06place, you could be good next year.
- 22:08In Child's looks so good against Iowa a year ago.
- 22:11Really. Did you saw him a season ago,
- 22:13very inconsistent, but thought maybe that'd be ironed out after
- 22:16a full season as the starter. Has not been the case.
- 22:18I know he's been banged up, he's got a foot injury he's dealing
- 22:20with right now, but is it just how bad the offensive line has
- 22:24been? I mean, is that the reason that
- 22:26Child certainly is not taking a step forward?
- 22:29Yeah, I think it's a it's the banged up offensive line.
- 22:32I think I think there's, and I'm not going to describe this just
- 22:37particularly to him, but I think players in general, you know,
- 22:41think back to when you were 20, for example, and when you hear
- 22:45some of the commentary, whether it's on campus or it's on social
- 22:47media, you know, these are these are players now who are being
- 22:50paid hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions of dollars.
- 22:54So they're getting the money and the attention and the pressure
- 22:58that comes with being paid millions of dollars in addition
- 23:01to the pressure that comes with being kind of the big man on
- 23:04campus. So I think that's a that's a
- 23:06piece and, and honestly, we've talked about this a lot when
- 23:09we've talked about golf through the years.
- 23:11I mean, there's players that can deal with that, you know, the
- 23:14dial getting turned up on pressure, you know, the
- 23:17attention that comes from those press conferences week in and
- 23:19week out on the PGA Tour or in any sport.
- 23:22Players deal with that differently.
- 23:24I think there's a physical component to it and talent and
- 23:26the skill to throw the ball and run and make choices and, you
- 23:29know, get it, get the ball or it needs to go.
- 23:32But then there's also the attention part of it.
- 23:34And when that changes and you're the all of a sudden you're the
- 23:36man. Some players don't deal with
- 23:38that as well as other players do.
- 23:42I want to go to last night you were at Madison Square Garden,
- 23:44you and your daughter for the Champions classic 4 blue bloods
- 23:47in the building Michigan State, Kentucky.
- 23:49Usually we see Izzos team peeking late in the year.
- 23:52They usually drop these games over the last over the last few
- 23:56years seeming early in the year when they you know, they play a
- 23:59a fellow blue blood. It doesn't go their way yet last
- 24:02night, I mean, they just pounded Kentucky, man, I can't tell you
- 24:06how impressed I was by watching your Spartans particularly.
- 24:10I mean, Kohler stood out. Fears was unbelievable, Kid off
- 24:14the bench, Tang was great, but Fears is the guy that really got
- 24:17my attention. Before we get into the game,
- 24:19just what's the atmosphere like for blue bloods in the Mecca of
- 24:23college hoops or of basketball, Madison Square Garden?
- 24:26What's it like to be in the building?
- 24:29Well, I mean it was a great atmosphere for us because we can
- 24:32stay played great and I've seen I think 5 Spartan games at the
- 24:35Garden ranging from this event to the Big 10 Championship.
- 24:39The first time I've seen him win.
- 24:40So that was pretty good. I like that.
- 24:43But I think what what what Izzo likes is when he has a team that
- 24:46he can yell at as as hard as he can and they don't and he
- 24:50doesn't lose them. You know that, You know, they
- 24:52respond to the tough coaching and they have a really good mix.
- 24:57They have good young players, they've got veterans and there's
- 25:00this great recruiting class that's coming in next year that
- 25:03I think gives a positive energy to the program in general.
- 25:07And and to your point, he's got he's got a point guard that
- 25:10really plays hard on both ends of the floor and and to have big
- 25:14players that can shoot, you know, Kohler as a is a good
- 25:16three-point shot And and and the Spartans have always been, you
- 25:20know, they've made their money, so to speak, on the glass.
- 25:23So, you know, they're a tough team to, to beat when they play
- 25:27that way and when they can make shots.
- 25:29The, the problem over the last couple of years is when the
- 25:31outside shooting, because when you didn't, when you can't do
- 25:33that, it just lets defenses do a lot of different things to make
- 25:36your life hard. So when, when they make those 3
- 25:39point shots like that, you know, they're a tough team to beat.
- 25:41And you know, Izzo, I think Izzo likes to lose some of those
- 25:44games around the season because it, it gives them a rally and
- 25:47cry and practice to say, you know, you guys aren't as good
- 25:49as, as you think you are and keeps them focused.
- 25:52So let's hope that that's not an issue this year.
- 25:55You know, Ford comes in from Sanford.
- 25:57I'm really intrigued with Cam Ward.
- 25:59Not that Cam Ward. This Cam Ward for Michigan
- 26:01State, he's a freshman. He looks like he's got a real
- 26:05chance at a lot of upside. No, he was a big kid from
- 26:07Maryland to get away from the Terps.
- 26:09They were offered a buttload of money to get him there.
- 26:11At Michigan State, where you're kind of looking down the line,
- 26:14is Cam Ward one of those guys, if they're going to take that
- 26:16next step and they're going to be, you know, playing in the
- 26:18Elite 8 play for a chance at a Final Four, is Ward going to be
- 26:21an important piece? Is he going to get the minutes
- 26:23necessary for that? Yeah, and I think when you hear
- 26:27Tom is a start talking about a player being, you know, having
- 26:30some of the same qualities as Draymond Green, that's one of
- 26:32the best compliments that a coach can give.
- 26:35And I think when he when he says something like that, I think
- 26:39what do you what he's combining is the it's the physical
- 26:42attributes with also the the competitiveness and the and the
- 26:45smarts that you need to play. I mean, I think Tom is those
- 26:49perfect player would be a player that maybe was a was AB plus
- 26:53athlete and that might be be generous when you're talking
- 26:55about Draymond Green, for example, but AB plus athlete,
- 26:58but an A+ thinker and competitor on the floor.
- 27:02And I think that's the early rap.
- 27:04You know, for Cam Ward is is that is that profile.
- 27:07And I think if you told time as he could have a team full of
- 27:09guys like that, that's his favorite kind of team to coach.
- 27:13And he's made a point of saying, you know, he likes to develop
- 27:16players, keep him in the program.
- 27:18He hasn't really leaned into the whole transfer portal saying,
- 27:21yeah, he's still recruiting at a high level.
- 27:24And you know, I take a particular kind of player to be
- 27:26willing to to take some abuse for a few years, so to speak.
- 27:30You know, Xavier Booker was a five star recruit and had all
- 27:33the skill in the world. And you just needed a place
- 27:36where the communication style was different.
- 27:38And, and I think when Nizzo can find those guys and you can, you
- 27:41can build that chemistry and have all these these players
- 27:44from the past come in every offseason and, and reinforce
- 27:48what the what the culture of the program is that that's really, I
- 27:51think that that's what makes him continue to love coaching and,
- 27:55and kind of go against the tide, like we were talking about in
- 27:58football. You know, there's some of these
- 28:00older coaches don't want to do this anymore because it's hard
- 28:03to maintain that. But the Spartans have been able
- 28:06to do that so far. And I think that's why when you
- 28:08when you see is though at 70 or 71 years old, still wanting to
- 28:12do it, because it's still fun for him to build that, you know,
- 28:15to build that connective tissue. Yeah, I don't think the the
- 28:18narrative that's out there that it's Purdue and it's Michigan
- 28:21and it's everybody else. What I saw last night certainly
- 28:23opened up by I so did car. My God, he can jump.
- 28:26He's unbelievable athleticism. All right.
- 28:29When you can, when you can get your, when you can get your head
- 28:32above the bat, above the rim, that's pretty good.
- 28:34That's getting up there. Was the story of the year in
- 28:37golf written the second week in April?
- 28:40I mean, was there anything that topped Rory's Masters in your
- 28:43mind this year, Matt? Well, I mean, I mean, I don't
- 28:48want to diminish within the career Grand Slam, but I think
- 28:51it was a big deal for Rory, you know, because he'd struggled so
- 28:55long to close that, close that door, you know, to achieve that.
- 29:00But, you know, I don't know that that ultimately to me resonated
- 29:05as much as seeing Gotti Scheffler win, you know, wider
- 29:09and a wider array of events and to keep doing what he's been
- 29:13doing over so many years. I mean, I think that was a big
- 29:16story. And I think seeing what the
- 29:18Europeans continue to do in the Ryder Cup, I don't know that
- 29:21that was a great, you know, it wasn't a great event from a
- 29:24story perspective. But to see how they're able to
- 29:27continue to put teams together no matter what seems to happen
- 29:30with live, none of that seems to matter to the cohesiveness of
- 29:33the European team. You know, again, I don't want to
- 29:36diminish what Rory did, but even he said himself that after he
- 29:40won that tournament, it kind of took his, took the wind out of
- 29:43his sails for the rest of the year.
- 29:45So I'm I'll, I guess I'll say there's a gold, silver and
- 29:48bronze. Those are the three stories and
- 29:51you can pick kind of what order you think they should be in.
- 29:54Matt, as you know, Tiger always at the forefront he was in, even
- 29:57as he doesn't play. You know what, it was
- 29:59interesting. I saw something that popped up
- 30:01on on an account I was looking at and he turns 50 next month.
- 30:06No, he doesn't. He's eligible for the Champions,
- 30:10which is just baffling to think about.
- 30:12But his return, I mean, is it the masters that's the
- 30:15targetator? Is even that unrealistic for
- 30:17Tiger? It's hard because I could tell
- 30:21you something. Then tomorrow you might announce
- 30:23that he had like a total knee replacement of them.
- 30:25Like he's the big, he's the big mystery surgery guy.
- 30:28So, you know, I think as always, the issue for him is when he
- 30:33goes through some of these surgeries, what do you have to
- 30:35do to get yourself to be back? Not just, you know, like they
- 30:38say you're in shape, but then there's football shape.
- 30:40I think there's in shape and then there's golf, golf shape,
- 30:43too. And I just don't know how much
- 30:46golf he can ever play now to get back into that, you know, to
- 30:51beat the players who are now in their physical prime to when you
- 30:55see what Scotty Scheffler does physically or what Rory McIlroy
- 30:58does physically, Tiger can't do those things anymore.
- 31:01And, you know, it's not, that's not to say that a place that he
- 31:04knows, like Augusta National, he can't conjure something up, but
- 31:09can he practice enough and play enough to be ready for that?
- 31:13the Champions Tour, you know, the PGA Tour Champions is
- 31:15actually a probably a perfect solution to that because you can
- 31:20ride if he wants to ride. The golf courses are shorter.
- 31:23You know, you don't, you don't have to have as much fastball as
- 31:25you used to have. And you know, the, I mean, I
- 31:29don't think he should make the mistake of thinking the level of
- 31:32competition might be easier because there's a lot of really
- 31:34good players and a lot of really fit players on that tour.
- 31:38So I think to see, you know, if the if the goal is to see Tiger
- 31:42and to see his name on leaderboards, you know, the
- 31:44senior U.S. Open, you know, something like
- 31:46that, that's a better, that's probably a better bet than
- 31:49something on the regular tour. Principal charity Class A couple
- 31:52of miles from where Trent and I are doing our show right now.
- 31:54That'd be a perfect spot for him to return in 2026.
- 31:58Hey brother, Thanks Matt Rudy for what you do for us.
- 32:00All golf season, all the majors, etcetera.
- 32:03I was grateful to pick your brain on and last night and of
- 32:06course, Sparty in Iowa coming up this week, Happy holidays,
- 32:09Thanksgiving, we won't talk to you until 26.
- 32:12Thank you, Matt Rudy for what you do for us.
- 32:14Really appreciate it. Anytime I love talking to you.
- 32:17Good stuff, buddy. Thank you, Matt Rudy.
- 32:18As we check in on golf, Michigan State basketball and football,
- 32:23Mitch Holtis is the voice of the Chiefs.
- 32:25He joins us next Miller in Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 32:28Network. Welcome back the Iowa Sports
- 32:34Radio Network with you until 2. David Kaplan kicks off our
- 32:38number 2. Matt and Orland are on college
- 32:41hoops as well. Transplays of the Day Circus
- 32:43sports sponsor those Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa
- 32:47sponsors our buddy Mitch Holtis, who joins us each and every
- 32:50Wednesday during the regular season, every day, Monday
- 32:54through Friday during August for the most, most part with the
- 32:57Chiefs training camp report, he is back.
- 32:59It's the Colts. It's the Chiefs this week and
- 33:02Mitch joins us. Mitch Tran, Ken, thanks for
- 33:03coming on. How are you, Mitch Holtis?
- 33:06Good, I hand you my sword, Ken. Yes, thank.
- 33:09You great job by your Bronco team.
- 33:12Good team game that we pretty much laid out last Wednesday.
- 33:16It followed right down the line and so plays made by the Broncos
- 33:21at the all throughout the game. The chiefs had a shot at six or
- 33:24seven critical points of that game and and the chiefs did not
- 33:28get it done. So now we're sitting at 5:00 and
- 33:305:00 and begin a series of seven one game season.
- 33:32Yeah, I agree with you. It's obviously not going to be
- 33:35easy. The Colts coming up this week.
- 33:37I want to ask your opinion on one.
- 33:38Bronco I think is really starting to is lights going on.
- 33:42That's Pat Bryant. The receiver from Illinois was
- 33:44their third round pick. I think he led the Broncos this
- 33:48past week in in receptions at memory serves as either him or
- 33:51Franklin. But Pat Bryant, I'm I'm guessing
- 33:54you didn't know much about him going into it.
- 33:56What did you think of him? Because I really think he's
- 33:58starting to to get a lot better and be a bigger factor in this
- 34:01offense. Well, and he fits the scheme
- 34:04very well. That's a good job by patent to
- 34:07to draft him to that scheme. And he's also a good compliment
- 34:12to Cortland Sutton or to Troy Franklin and, you know, big
- 34:16physical receiver, good tough hands.
- 34:19I just didn't remember him. Like he just didn't make this
- 34:21great impression on me at Illinois or come out of the
- 34:26draft like, hey, good guy, but you know he's going to be a
- 34:28really good receiver because sometimes it's the scheme that
- 34:32you go into, and I think he's perfect for that scheme.
- 34:35You look back at the game and we're in the football, OK?
- 34:39I heard Andy Reid and one of his press conferences earlier this
- 34:42week mentioned they had a whole lot of RP OS and the Broncos
- 34:45were giving more of the pass option out of those RP OS and
- 34:48that's why they went the direction that they did.
- 34:51Do you think that this run game, they'll get Pacheco back maybe
- 34:54as soon as this week that there is another level or is it just
- 34:58kind of is what it is right now? It's OK, but it's never going to
- 35:01be great this year. You know, it has to be better
- 35:04and I know it's a situational running Trent, two big plays in
- 35:09that game. The Chiefs have had nine
- 35:12opportunities in 10 games to have essentially the double dip.
- 35:16I got into this last week with you a little bit.
- 35:18I think it was my minute with Mitch thesis that you can see,
- 35:22you know, they're on Fox in Des Moines.
- 35:24But the point here is the Chiefs had a third down and one at the
- 35:29chance for a double dip to score at the end of the second and
- 35:32going at the beginning of the third that didn't make it.
- 35:35And then the third and two they get a stop.
- 35:38It's 1916 Chiefs and they have the ball in their hands at three
- 35:42O 4 to go and they can't convert. 1/3 down and one at
- 35:47their own 19. That's the stuff that's got to
- 35:50start happening. Especially the Colts are really
- 35:53good. They're way better than people
- 35:54think. But I would tell you more than
- 35:57anything else, it's situational running.
- 35:59That has to improve a great deal here because when they've had a
- 36:02chance to double dip and there are 4 losses, they have had no
- 36:06touchdowns, 1 field goal, 4/3 and outs, an interception.
- 36:11When they're 4 losses and they're five wins, they've had 7
- 36:13touchdowns. So that's what they have, you
- 36:16know, at the beginning end of the second start of the third.
- 36:19Your thoughts on the Colts overall, Obviously Jonathan
- 36:21Taylor having an all pro type of year.
- 36:24Daniel Jones is in the hunt for comeback player of the year.
- 36:27We know him that the rookie Tyler Warren looks as though
- 36:30they Colts got one there. Your thoughts on on this Colts
- 36:33team and what's the Chiefs will Chiefs will face this weekend?
- 36:37Pull out your Papa John's bingo card at the beginning of the
- 36:40season. See, if you had oh, the Colts
- 36:42will lead the NFL in total offense, yards per game and that
- 36:46Daniel Jones would be third in passing yardage 10 to 11 weeks
- 36:51into the season. Go ahead and mark your spot
- 36:53there if you've got it. Oh, you do go like you guys
- 36:56don't have it, nor do I. This Jonathan Taylor's
- 37:00brilliance overshadows other things on this team.
- 37:02And I'll throw in Michael Pittman junior, I'll throw in
- 37:06Alec Pierce. But honestly, Tyler Warren has
- 37:09been the difference maker on this team.
- 37:10The rookie tight end of Notre Dame who has the exact number of
- 37:13catches is Travis Kelce. So this Colts team is a honest
- 37:18to goodness AFC challenger. This isn't some feel good story
- 37:22where they're winning a bunch of close games and blocking field
- 37:25goals and punts to win. This is a legitimate offense and
- 37:29their defense is opportunistic and taking the ball away.
- 37:32The Colts are legitimate contender in the AFC.
- 37:36Travis Kelsey was something before he became Taylor Swift's
- 37:40boyfriend and now he's got the Chiefs record for career
- 37:42touchdowns. You know, he's gone to a
- 37:45different stratosphere, people that know him across all walks
- 37:48of life. But take us through, you know,
- 37:50this decade plus now of Travis Kelsey.
- 37:52And even at this point in advanced stage and tight ends
- 37:55that take up outing, he looked like he hit the fountain of you.
- 37:58Looks really good. Just an overview of Kelsey.
- 38:02Well, let's catch and touchdown to give the Chiefs the lead that
- 38:04I mentioned earlier and they got the ball and had a chance to
- 38:07wrap it up was a was a testimony to that.
- 38:12He's at 12 / 12,000 snaps. Here's what makes Travis Kelsey
- 38:16set apart from all others including Gronk.
- 38:20Even T Guns, who I love is the fact that he has been challenged
- 38:25with running all 7, every route on the route tree in this
- 38:29offense, he has to run every route on the route tree.
- 38:31He has to Wham block. He has to do everything,
- 38:35absolutely everything. A Dalton Kincaid will line up in
- 38:38the slot and do certain things. That's why Tyler Warren, Oregon,
- 38:43a Brock Bowers comes to mind. But even then, they're not asked
- 38:46to do the blocking in their schemes that Travis has been
- 38:50asked to do now for since 2014. He's incredible.
- 38:56And at 36 years old, when you look at the four top tight ends
- 38:59in the league, too, that I just mentioned, he's right there with
- 39:02those guys. But they're like 24, five years
- 39:04old. Kelsey's 36.
- 39:06He, he has no equal. I'll argue all that in the
- 39:08Supreme Court of Iowa about it. No, you won't.
- 39:11And I, I rooted for Shannon Sharpe and I thought he was
- 39:13terrific. But Kelsey's, Kelsey's on any
- 39:16single tight end list. And I'm with you and I'd stand
- 39:18right beside you, make those arguments and also.
- 39:20He has more receiving guards. You look at it playoff wise,
- 39:23I'll make this quick. He's he's only Jerry Rice has
- 39:26more playoff productivity than of any past catcher than Travis
- 39:29Kelly. It's wild.
- 39:30Let's talk Papa John's. Papa Dippa.
