Transcript
- 0:00Chapter 27 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:04This is an interesting one because there are things that
- 0:08we're going to have questions to and we're not going to know if
- 0:13we are on the right path. Well, it's going to make us
- 0:17question things that we think we know.
- 0:20So anyway, let's go to Second Timothy 316 to remind ourselves
- 0:26why we read Scripture. All Scripture is God breathes
- 0:30and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and
- 0:33training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be
- 0:37thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 0:41Another reason to read is according to Romans chapter 10,
- 0:47verse 17. Consequently, faith comes from
- 0:51hearing the message, and the message is heard through the
- 0:55word about Christ. In the Old Testament, we
- 0:59occasionally talk about Christ because there are prophecies
- 1:02about Christ, but not every single part of the Old Testament
- 1:06has information about Christ. However, let's get started on
- 1:12chapter 27. Early in the reign of Zedekiah,
- 1:18son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from
- 1:23the Lord. This is what the Lord said to
- 1:26me. Make a yoke out of straps and
- 1:29crossbars and put it on your neck.
- 1:32Then send a word to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and
- 1:41Sidon. Those are 5 kings that he's
- 1:47saying. This was interesting to me
- 1:49because he's not speaking to the kings the the people of Judah.
- 1:55He is telling Jeremiah to go to five different kings.
- 2:00And it's always interesting when there's like the five different
- 2:02kings because I think there were like 5 kings in the Philistines
- 2:07when they had the Ark of the Covenant and tumors.
- 2:11And there's all sorts of things like that.
- 2:13Like there's a pattern with God often and it's a subtle thing
- 2:17that comes up. And I think there may be, it's
- 2:21just something to watch. I don't really know what it is,
- 2:23but I think there may be something with these 5 S Edom,
- 2:28Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon. Now these were in the I always
- 2:33like to figure out like where are these today?
- 2:36Edom, Moab and Ammon are all like part of Jordan today.
- 2:41And then Tyre, Sidon is Lebanon area.
- 2:45So these are very interesting just to think, you know,
- 2:49they're, they're in Judah and he's telling them God is telling
- 2:53Jeremiah to go to these kings, send, send word, not go there,
- 2:58but send word to the kings of Edom, Moab, Amon, Tyre and Sidon
- 3:04through the envoys who have come to Jerusalem, to Zedekiah, king
- 3:09of Judah, give them a message for their masters.
- 3:14And this is another interesting concept that I've looked into
- 3:17recently as a result of being challenged about slavery in a
- 3:21Bible study. But it's very, it's an
- 3:24interesting study, which I haven't completed yet, but we,
- 3:27there's a lot of places in the Bible where God talks about
- 3:32slaves and servants are actually the same word in Hebrew, ebed,
- 3:37EBED. And then he talks about masters
- 3:41throughout the Bible. There's several references to
- 3:44masters. So I'm in the process of doing a
- 3:46separate study on that and it's opening my eyes to a lot of
- 3:49different things, but I'm kind of getting sidetracked here.
- 3:52So but it's I find it interesting now that give this
- 3:56message to for their masters and say this is what the Lord
- 4:00Almighty, the God of Israel says.
- 4:03Tell this to your masters. Now this is where God is just
- 4:08saying who he is and telling them, you need to know this.
- 4:15So here's God speaking with my great power and outstretched
- 4:19arm. I made the earth and its people
- 4:25and the animals that are on it, and I give it to anyone I
- 4:30please. This is the, you know, the only
- 4:33God can give it, because only God owns what's here.
- 4:38Everyone else has a temporary possession of something until
- 4:43God says no more. So here he continues.
- 4:47Now I will give all your countries into the hands of my
- 4:53servant. Isn't that interesting?
- 4:55He calls Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, his servant.
- 4:59There's a lot more about the king of Babylon in the book of
- 5:03Daniel and we will read about that, which is really
- 5:07interesting. I mean, it's that's a good
- 5:10portion of the book of Daniel and what has happened during
- 5:14that time. So it's very interesting because
- 5:16we know that Daniel was one of the Exiles that came out of
- 5:19Judah and went into Babylon. So you'll see how God works
- 5:24through all these things. It's neat to see how these books
- 5:26tie together. I will make him.
- 5:29I will make even the wild animals subject to him.
- 5:33Now, Nebuchadnezzar actually went through a change himself
- 5:38because he was a very boastful, prideful king and God humbled
- 5:44him. And he has a very interesting
- 5:47story. He did get humbled, but his son
- 5:50did not. And like I said, I'm not going
- 5:53to go into that because we'll cover it when we get to the book
- 5:55of Daniel, but it's a very interesting story.
- 5:57But God refers to him as his servant, Nebuchadnezzar, king of
- 6:02Babylon. And of course, Babylon didn't
- 6:06believe in the same God as the true God.
- 6:10But God can use, he can work with anyone and he is sovereign
- 6:15over all. Even if they're worshipping
- 6:17other gods, they're just mistaken.
- 6:19They are in error. And God is still sovereign over
- 6:24everything. And he can use people like
- 6:27Pharaoh he did and like this Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.
- 6:33There's a lot in the Bible about Babylon.
- 6:35And it's not a good thing. It's it's kind of like the enemy
- 6:38of God. There's like, it does the
- 6:40opposite of what God says. But here God is actually using
- 6:44that and he's turning people over.
- 6:46Can you imagine how hard it would be if you were in Israel
- 6:50and you were always succeeding under God?
- 6:54And then all of a sudden there's a prophet who somewhat, I guess
- 6:59to be true. I don't know at this point if
- 7:01Jeremiah proved himself yet, but he's basically saying to, I
- 7:07mean, right now we're talking about other countries, but he's
- 7:09also said to Judah that they're going to go into captivity.
- 7:14And, and there's more here because this is like, usually
- 7:18God is the one who's who conquers everything, but now God
- 7:22is giving a prophet the word to say, no, you're going to be
- 7:26subject to, you know, basically his, his enemy, but he's turning
- 7:32them over. That's what God does.
- 7:34And that's kind of a scary thing When we stay rebellious to God,
- 7:39there's a certain point where God may up to him, we don't know
- 7:43when or if, but he may turn us over to that.
- 7:49And that's a scary place to be because in, in all truth, it's
- 7:54not a good place for us. And but if we remain rebellious,
- 7:58he will give us what we choose. And and then we realize that
- 8:05that's not a good thing. So it's very important to be
- 8:10able to discern a word from God and a word from a false prophet.
- 8:17Their spiritual discernment is so important and to be able to
- 8:23communicate with God and to know when God answers a prayer,
- 8:28usually, you know, when it happens.
- 8:30I mean it's kind of like in hindsight, but just I think the
- 8:35closer we get to God the better we will be in discerning his,
- 8:41His voice, His thoughts, His direction, His guidance.
- 8:45So anyway, this what the scripture says is all nations
- 8:49will serve him and his son and his grandson.
- 8:53So there's like 3 generations of kings in power that gods is
- 8:58telling them that all nations are going to serve this guy
- 9:02until the time for his land comes.
- 9:05Then many nations and great kings will subjugate him.
- 9:11So in the future others will conquer him.
- 9:15But for the moment he is going to conquer all.
- 9:19That's very much like what will happen in our future.
- 9:23There is this, you know, lawless man who will come on board and
- 9:28people will think he's the Messiah and he will conquer for
- 9:32a period of time. And even God's elect Israel,
- 9:38those who proclaim the word of Jesus will be subject to him,
- 9:42will be hurt by him. Will.
- 9:44You know, it's basically it's almost a repetition of what is
- 9:47happening here. And then what happens is it's
- 9:51when Jesus returns. So there's again a repetition.
- 9:56This is almost like a foreshadowing of our someday
- 10:00future. Whether it's our generation or
- 10:03the next generation remains to be seen.
- 10:07But this is something in the future also.
- 10:11I mean, it's, it's, it's kind of like a foreshadowing of
- 10:14something in the future. So If however, any nation or
- 10:18Kingdom will not serve Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,
- 10:21or bow its neck under his yoke, I will punish that nation with
- 10:25the sword, famine and plague, declares the Lord until I
- 10:28destroy it by his hand. Now the the thing I guess I need
- 10:32to say about the future is God does not want us to follow the
- 10:39future lawless man. He, I mean, in fact it says
- 10:44basically if we take a mark that they're going to force and roll
- 10:47out that we will not be able to enter the Kingdom of God.
- 10:51Like we cannot get forgiveness for that.
- 10:54So there is a a great difference in what God says about the
- 10:58future is that we should not surrender to this future lawless
- 11:06one who is against God, who will have power for a certain period
- 11:11of time. So very much unlike this.
- 11:14So it's very different than this so but it's interesting here he
- 11:19says I will punish that nation with a sword, famine and plague.
- 11:23And those things are like the first 3 seals that are broken.
- 11:27So again there's similarities too, declares the Lord.
- 11:31Until I destroy it by his hand. Do not listen to your prophets,
- 11:37your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your medians, or your
- 11:41sorcerers who tell you you will not serve the king of Babylon.
- 11:46They prophecy lies to you that will only serve to remove you
- 11:51from your lands. I will banish you and you will
- 11:54perish. But if any nation will bow its
- 11:57neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serve him, I will
- 12:02let that nation remain in its own land to till it and to live
- 12:08there, declares the Lord. I gave the same message to
- 12:11Zedekiah, king of Judah. I said, Bow your neck under the
- 12:15yoke of the king of Babylon, serve him and his people, and
- 12:20you will live. Why will you and your people die
- 12:24by the sword, famine and plague with which the Lord has
- 12:30threatened? And any nation that will not
- 12:32serve the king of Babylon? Do not listen to the words of
- 12:36the prophets who say to you, You will not serve the king of
- 12:39Babylon, for they are prophesying lies to you.
- 12:43I have not sent them, declares the Lord.
- 12:46They are prophesying lies in my name.
- 12:50Therefore, I will banish you and you will perish, both you and
- 12:55the prophets who prophecy to you.
- 12:58So again, this really makes it important that we have a close
- 13:02relationship with God, because how do you know who to trust if
- 13:07you have two people that are, you know, apparently prophets
- 13:10that are telling you the opposite thing?
- 13:13How do you know the difference? Well, one thing is by spiritual
- 13:17discernment, and I always go back to Galatians chapter 5.
- 13:21What is the fruit of the Spirit that's influencing these people?
- 13:27And again, it also talks about in the next chapter, we'll talk
- 13:30about this too. It's about those who claim peace
- 13:33because Jesus said that there will not be peace until he
- 13:38returns, and there's going to be someone who claims to be him
- 13:42that returns first before he does.
- 13:45So that's a great deception as I understand it.
- 13:52So we're going back to the Scripture here.
- 13:55Then I said to the priest and all these people, this is what
- 13:58the Lord says. Do not listen to the prophets
- 14:00who say very soon the articles from the Lord's house will be
- 14:04brought back from Babylon. They are prophesying lies to
- 14:08you. Do not listen to them.
- 14:10Serve the king of Babylon and you will live.
- 14:12Why should the city become a ruin?
- 14:15If they are prophets and have the word of the Lord, let them
- 14:18plead with the Lord Almighty, that the articles remaining in
- 14:21the House of the Lord and in the palace of the king of Judah and
- 14:24in Jerusalem not be taken to Babylon.
- 14:28For this is what the Lord Almighty says about the pillars,
- 14:32the bronze sea, the movable stands, and the other articles
- 14:37that are left in this city, which Nebuchadnezzar, king of
- 14:41Babylon, did not take away when he carried Jehoah Chin, son of
- 14:46Jehoah Kim, king of Judah, into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon,
- 14:52along with all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem.
- 14:56Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel,
- 15:00says about the things that are left in the House of the Lord
- 15:04and in the palace of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem.
- 15:08Pay attention to this because this is something that I think
- 15:12might appear to us. They will be taken to Babylon,
- 15:17and there they will remain until the day I come for them,
- 15:24declares the Lord. Then I will bring them back and
- 15:28restore them to this place. This is interesting because I
- 15:34don't know if this is literal or if God uses someone to bring the
- 15:39articles back. I think somebody set, I mean,
- 15:44there is some discussion that about, well, discussion about
- 15:48the Ark of the Covenant being like hidden somewhere maybe by
- 15:52Jeremiah. You know, the Ark of the
- 15:55Covenant has been lost and has not returned.
- 15:59And recently I saw there it has, this is really weird too.
- 16:04There is a replica of the Ark of the Covenant that's kind of
- 16:08disappeared from sight recently. But I did see it on social media
- 16:12and it was kind of making the rounds very interesting.
- 16:16And it was an exact replica. Somebody had sponsored it.
- 16:21It was made of the gold. It was made exactly according to
- 16:25what the Bible says. And it it was kind of being, you
- 16:31know, showcased in the US and was apparently going to be
- 16:36heading over to Israel and was going to be potentially used in
- 16:43they were talking about, you know, using it like they used to
- 16:46use it where they carry it with them in war or something like
- 16:49that. Which again, it's so hard to
- 16:53know if things that you see online or even true or not,
- 16:56especially with the the quality of AI.
- 17:02But you know, there was a whole article that was written about
- 17:05it. And that doesn't mean it's true
- 17:06either, but it was, it was written about, you know, that
- 17:09this, you know, unnamed investor or donor, you know, paid for all
- 17:14of this and it was recreated. So again, is this part of the
- 17:20great deception? You know, will people say this
- 17:23is the real Ark of the Covenant and then it comes out someday,
- 17:27you know, cuz there's a lot of talk about the temple being
- 17:29rebuilt. I just think it's something we
- 17:31need to keep our eyes open about and we need to know that there
- 17:35is at least there was something circulated online that some fake
- 17:39arc, the Ark of the Covenant was replicated and it's not the real
- 17:44one, but you know, the real one. God's presence had departed from
- 17:49it. But in the past when God's
- 17:51presence was there, anyone who is not a Levite are not
- 17:56authorized by God to carry. If they touched the Ark of the
- 17:59Covenant, they would die. So it was, it had like these, it
- 18:05itself did not have any powers. It was the presence of God and
- 18:10God is holy. And that's why again, when God
- 18:13gave the 10 commandments to Moses on the mountain, there was
- 18:17a preparation that had to occur. And God kind of warned the
- 18:20people don't come near this mountain because it is holy and
- 18:24anything, anything that touches it would die because sin can't
- 18:28be in the presence of God. So the way I saw it, my
- 18:32understanding of it was that, you know, God's holiness, we
- 18:36can't be as a sinful person. We can't be in the presence of
- 18:40God. And that's another reason why we
- 18:42need Jesus, why we need the Holy Spirit, because Jesus made it
- 18:47possible by his death on the cross that we could be in the
- 18:50Kingdom of God. He was the one sacrifice that
- 18:53was needed, the pure sacrifice that was needed for all
- 18:57generations, past, present and future.
- 19:00And he died and was resurrected. And it was the power of the Holy
- 19:06Spirit that resurrected him. The same power of the Holy
- 19:10Spirit that resurrected Jesus is the same power of the Holy
- 19:14Spirit that will resurrect us and will change us.
- 19:19And it says in Scripture that we receive the Holy Spirit through
- 19:24Jesus. I think that's why Jesus said
- 19:27I'm the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the
- 19:29Father except through me. So when we believe and we
- 19:34confess our sins and we repent, that we mean it means we change
- 19:40our mind about living a sinful life and ask God to help us
- 19:45become holy like he is holy. The power of the Holy Spirit
- 19:49will come upon those people. It's promised through Jesus from
- 19:53the Father and and that's what Jesus said to his disciples.
- 19:58He said, you know, I will send the Advocate and he will be with
- 20:01you. So when we believe, truly
- 20:03believe, and truly want God to guide our lives, that is when we
- 20:10receive the Holy Spirit through Jesus.
- 20:13So anyway, it that's all important information, but this,
- 20:19this last sentence in chapter 27 about these articles being taken
- 20:25to Babylon and that he says that they will be taken to Babylon
- 20:33and there they will remain until the day I come for them,
- 20:36declares the Lord. Then I will bring them back and
- 20:40restore them to this place. So is that when Jesus returns
- 20:46that that happens? I don't know.
- 20:50And is there a great deception because of the Scripture that
- 20:53somebody, the false Jesus, the fake Jesus, the lawless 1 is
- 20:57going to say, look, I have the ark of the covenant.
- 21:00You know, I don't know that's that's could be how it plays out
- 21:03and I don't want to that's not biblical.
- 21:04It doesn't really say that. However, I, you know, I am
- 21:09curious about this statement, whether God uses somebody to get
- 21:14the articles or God himself. Jesus actually does this and
- 21:21brings it back. This is just a question and
- 21:24maybe as we read Scripture and find out what happens, maybe
- 21:27it'll make more sense. But for right now, this is a
- 21:34question in my mind. I have to look that up.
- 21:37So let's see how long we are on this podcast here because I
- 21:40might go into the next chapter. We're at 21 minutes.
- 21:43Maybe I'll just read the questions and answers for this
- 21:47chapter to make it not too long. So did Jeremiah know exactly
- 21:51when the prophesied events would happen?
- 21:53Jeremiah did not know the specific timing of the events,
- 21:56but he knew with God-given certainty that the political
- 22:00coalition of nations that were allied against Babylon was
- 22:04doomed and that Jerusalem would soon fall.
- 22:07The yoke on Jeremiah neck demonstrated the inevitability
- 22:12of God's judgment. Why call a Pagan king God's
- 22:16servant? Good question.
- 22:18The time had come to punish Judah and the surrounding
- 22:21nations for their wickedness. God chose Nebuchadnezzar and the
- 22:26Babylonians as His servants to execute this punishment.
- 22:31They were neither more righteous nor more deserving than other
- 22:36nations, but they were used by God to affect His purposes.
- 22:42God's choices may sometimes be surprising and perplexing, but
- 22:48we can be sure they are always right.
- 22:51Isn't that interesting? So that's just showing the
- 22:54sovereignty of God and God can do anything.
- 22:56It's just like the he is the the Potter and we are the clay.
- 23:02And he can use some for common purposes and some for special
- 23:06purposes. And even a Pagan king he can use
- 23:09for a special purpose that is according to His will.
- 23:13Just very interesting. So how did Nebuchadnezzar tame
- 23:17wild animals? This overstatement was intended
- 23:20to illustrate the absolute dominion Nebuchadnezzar would
- 23:23have over the nations. Why would God help
- 23:26Nebuchadnezzar with plagues and famine?
- 23:29This was Jeremiah's warning to the coalition of nations that
- 23:33planned to oppose Babylon. In reality, they were opposing
- 23:38God. As a result, could expect His
- 23:41wrath. Some had have observed that
- 23:45plagues and famine often accompany war and that rebellion
- 23:50often leads to disease and starvation.
- 23:53Others say famine and plague were God's added punishment
- 23:56against all those nations that resisted his judgement that came
- 24:01through Nebuchadnezzar. The issue was submission to
- 24:05God's will. The nations that chose to resist
- 24:10it had nothing but sorrow to look forward to.
- 24:15That's interesting too, because we should.
- 24:17We should always seek God's will and everything.
- 24:19We may want something different, but we really need to surrender
- 24:24it and let it go, and let God's will be known and God's will
- 24:30proceed because it will. And it's better for us to
- 24:34surrender to God's will than to force something we want.
- 24:39When we had Babylon, When had Babylon confiscated temple
- 24:44articles? Nebuchadnezzar had attacked
- 24:46Jerusalem in 597 BC, taking several articles from the Temple
- 24:52back to Babylon. A strange mix of theology and
- 24:56politics in the ancient Near East caused people to believe
- 25:00that a nation was defeated when its gods were defeated by
- 25:04looting the temple and taking away its furnishings.
- 25:07The Babylonians confirmed that their victory was complete.
- 25:13Why would God allow the temple to be robbed?
- 25:15Probably for the following reasons #1 Judah had abandoned
- 25:20God, so as punishment he determined to abandon them #2
- 25:25Some temple articles had been taken to Babylon earlier in six
- 25:29O 5 and 597 BC, but the few that remained at the temple allowed
- 25:34the people to carry their empty rituals with a false sense of
- 25:40security. Removing the remaining temple
- 25:43articles put an end to the people's superficial worship #3
- 25:49The false prophets had predicted that temple articles taken
- 25:54earlier would soon be returned. Got exposed the false prophets
- 25:59as frauds by saying that not only was the prediction false,
- 26:04but the few items that remained would also be taken.
- 26:08And this was fulfilled in 586 BC.
- 26:12So that concludes chapter 27. I hope you come back for chapter
- 26:1628 because there's more interesting information there.
