Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Team New Zealand have done it again, winning the thirty
- 0:02Speaker 1: seventh America's Cup in Barcelona. It was a history making
- 0:06Speaker 1: win for the Kiwis. They are the first team to
- 0:08Speaker 1: win the trophy for the third time in a row.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Peter Montgomery is sailing commentator, the voice of Yachting. He's
- 0:14Speaker 1: with us this morning, Peter. Good morning to you. Cure
- 0:20Speaker 1: to Peter, can you hear us a second? But we
- 0:23Speaker 1: do now have I believe Peter Montgomery with us to
- 0:26Speaker 1: talk America's Cup.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Good morning, good morning.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Thank you for being with me. Really appreciate it. First
- 0:32Speaker 1: of all, what's your reaction? How are you feeling about this?
- 0:36Speaker 3: Well? I think given how complex these boats are to
- 0:39Speaker 3: design and bill, this has been a remarkable of achievement
- 0:43Speaker 3: by Team New Zealand and are gaining tim elands.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Team New Zealand.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Showed what a superior all round package they had from
- 0:51Speaker 4: the speed and performance of the boat. And more notably,
- 0:54Speaker 4: the way the savers were talking is when the commentators
- 0:57Speaker 4: stopped talking over audio, we could hear how combined and
- 1:02Speaker 4: how good the tenz And package was in contrast to
- 1:06Speaker 4: any of us. It's just seemed only the two helms
- 1:08Speaker 4: when we're talking, and so I was very impressed what
- 1:13Speaker 4: TVZ and were able to pull off.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Peter, do you think it will come the America's Cup
- 1:18Speaker 1: will come back here?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Well, who knows a lot of other factors, But when
- 1:23Speaker 2: there's people like you negative against it and a whole
- 1:26Speaker 2: bunch of others, then the end result is that, well
- 1:31Speaker 2: one of the things that the America's Cup will have
- 1:35Speaker 2: an impact on the New Zealand like no other sporting event.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Are you aware of Southern Spas and Red Wire? I
- 1:44Speaker 2: mean Southern Spas are a huge mass manufacturing operation and
- 1:48Speaker 2: composites and now they've got major contracts with an organization
- 1:54Speaker 2: involved in space exploration because of their brilliant and composites.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I mean there's a sie bar to things. Apart from
- 2:01Speaker 2: all the souper yachts coming to New Zealand where they've
- 2:06Speaker 2: all got to be, a lot of work has done
- 2:09Speaker 2: and there are other things that bring to New Zealand.
- 2:13Speaker 2: So there's a lot of other factors rather than just
- 2:18Speaker 2: a sporting World Championship where people come in and bring supporters.
- 2:23Speaker 2: There are a lot of sidebar effects from the America's
- 2:27Speaker 2: Cup that people are not considering.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Good point, good point is a whole industry you could
- 2:32Speaker 1: say that that's behind it and thrives, particularly in Auckland,
- 2:35Speaker 1: off the back of it.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Peter, we have more than the whole industry, more than
- 2:39Speaker 2: just a tourism industry and fans coming to fill hotel
- 2:43Speaker 2: rooms or whatever, and more than.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Sale makers and spa makers. There's been a byproduct that's
- 2:51Speaker 4: come out of it that no other sport brings. And
- 2:55Speaker 4: I think that that there's an important factor. I mean here,
- 3:00Speaker 4: Team years well Enios had Mercedi's Formula one, Alinghi had
- 3:06Speaker 4: Red Bull Formula one, Lula Rossa had Ferrari Formal one,
- 3:11Speaker 4: and Team New Zealand didn't have any of that. And
- 3:14Speaker 4: yet they had blokes with the brains and wit to
- 3:18Speaker 4: be able to do that, particularly with their foils, but
- 3:21Speaker 4: no one's giving them any credit for that. It's more well,
- 3:25Speaker 4: I don't want the America's Cup to come to New
- 3:28Speaker 4: Zealand because it's cost you know, rich white, wealthy people
- 3:32Speaker 4: they can pay their own way, when in fact it's
- 3:34Speaker 4: creating a whole bunch of jobs and income in an
- 3:39Speaker 4: area that people are not aware of.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah, Peter, thank you very much for your analysis this morning.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Really appreciate having you on the program. Peter Montgomery Sailing
