• 0:50
Speaker 3: them here today. Hollis Lewis is on one mic and

• 0:55
  Speaker 4: Hello, It's today's.
• 0:58
Speaker 3: Kind of an interesting thing because it's gonna be the
• 1:00
Speaker 3: first time that we've actually put out a subject so
• 1:04
Speaker 3: that you could hear the conversation about it, and then
• 1:08
Speaker 3: we're gonna come in and then we're gonna actually discuss it.
• 1:10
Speaker 4: So for from get up.
• 1:13
Speaker 3: If you haven't heard this, it's a get up on Instagram, take.
• 1:19
Speaker 4: A listen, and then we'll be right back as soon
• 1:21
  Speaker 4: as you hear.
• 1:21
Speaker 5: It, there was no issue in Jordan was around, there
• 1:24
Speaker 5: was no issue in Kobe was around. There's no issue
• 1:27
Speaker 5: in Sydney Crosby is around, There's no issue in Wayne
• 1:29
Speaker 5: Gretzky was around. Because those are true leaders. They lead
• 1:32
Speaker 5: by example, Sidney Crosby, hockey Canada, those players, both Canada
• 1:37
Speaker 5: and US. It was the players that did that for
• 1:39
  Speaker 5: the Four Nations.
• 1:40
Speaker 4: That's not the league.
• 1:41
Speaker 5: The league set it up, but the players went out
• 1:43
Speaker 5: there and decided and said, you know what, boys, we're
• 1:46
  Speaker 5: all in.
• 1:47
Speaker 4: When is the NBA gonna do that?
• 1:49
Speaker 5: Because you know, I haven't sat down and watched the
• 1:51
Speaker 5: NBA consistently since Kobe. I love basketball, love the players.
• 1:56
  Speaker 5: I think Lebron's great, I think Katie's great. Steph Curry
• 1:58
Speaker 5: love watching them. But you gotta be on the court.
• 2:02
Speaker 5: You gotta be there, and when you're there, you gotta
• 2:04
Speaker 5: go all in. The fans got to feel that they're
• 2:06
Speaker 5: getting their money's worth, and right now, there's a big
• 2:09
Speaker 5: difference between what the NHL is doing with those.
• 2:11
Speaker 4: Events and what the NBA is doing.
• 2:13
Speaker 5: Four Nations works because the players are all in.
• 2:16
  Speaker 3: All right, okay, And that's a PK stubborn. He's a
• 2:20
Speaker 3: hockey former hockey player and he's an analyst now and
• 2:23
Speaker 3: he's commenting on the NBA versus the NHL All Star
• 2:27
Speaker 3: Game and just overall effort.
• 2:30
Speaker 4: And I have to admit I think he's right.
• 2:33
Speaker 3: And I think part of where basketball is going is
• 2:38
  Speaker 3: a dangerous place. I think it's a really really dangerous
• 2:41
Speaker 3: place because I think people because and maybe it's just
• 2:46
  Speaker 3: too many games.
• 2:47
Speaker 4: It could be very it, that could very always. I
• 2:50
Speaker 4: get it. I get it. We can't say that.
• 2:53
Speaker 3: I'm just saying maybe now these players are kind of
• 2:55
Speaker 3: feel like they don't want to play, they don't have
• 2:57
Speaker 3: the ability to play. Look, I mean when you see
• 3:00
Speaker 3: the Lebron sitting on the on the sideline, I mean,
• 3:04
  Speaker 3: raph that's hurt.
• 3:06
Speaker 4: I'm hurt every day.
• 3:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, he actually made a comment and again and it's
• 3:10
Speaker 3: like a big just failure to read the room. He
• 3:12
Speaker 3: had made a comment the other day and he's talking
• 3:15
Speaker 3: about like this is Lebron tweeting about like their back
• 3:18
Speaker 3: to back schedules. So they had like two like they
• 3:20
Speaker 3: had a back to back and then they had a
• 3:22
Speaker 3: day off and then another back to back around sort
• 3:24
Speaker 3: of the West Coast and It's just like bro Man.
• 3:27
Speaker 4: Read the room like nobody cares.
• 3:29
Speaker 3: You're getting paid millions, gazillions of dollars and you're complaining
• 3:32
Speaker 3: about having to play on back to back days.
• 3:35
Speaker 6: So I go ahead, no, no, no, you finished ahead no.
• 3:38
Speaker 3: And I was just saying, like, in addition to just
• 3:41
Speaker 3: PK's comments, just directly about the All Star Game, to me,
• 3:44
Speaker 3: the bigger, the bigger, he said the quiet part out
• 3:48
Speaker 3: loud where he took a direct shot.
• 3:50
  Speaker 4: Of Lebron James.
• 3:51
Speaker 3: I think so as a leader of the NBA and
• 3:54
Speaker 3: just the overall effort that people are following his effort.
• 3:58
Speaker 3: And hold your thought there just one second, because because again,
• 4:01
Speaker 3: now we're talking about someone who wants to be and
• 4:04
Speaker 3: a lot of people think is the goat.
• 4:07
Speaker 4: Now when you start talking about being the goat.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: And you are setting the example in the tone, the tone,
• 4:15
Speaker 3: Oh are you what.
• 4:17
Speaker 4: Is that tone that you're setting? Go ahead, Lisa, I
• 4:19
  Speaker 4: know you're.
• 4:20
Speaker 6: No, no, no, no. I was just gonna say so.
• 4:22
Speaker 7: So here's the other side of that.
• 4:23
Speaker 8: I understand what you're saying about reading the room, and
• 4:26
Speaker 8: and you know, there's a difference between being injured and actually,
• 4:29
Speaker 8: you know, being hurt that's two completely different things to
• 4:32
  Speaker 8: two different settings.
• 4:33
Speaker 7: But what would have happened.
• 4:35
Speaker 8: Let's say he would have played hurt what he told
• 4:39
Speaker 8: you know, the media, and he did get hurt, he
• 4:41
Speaker 8: did sustain an injury, and then he's out for the
• 4:45
Speaker 8: next few games that are pretty essential and then making
• 4:49
Speaker 8: a deep playoff run.
• 4:50
Speaker 7: So I can see.
• 4:52
Speaker 8: Where you might make a decision that if you're on
• 4:54
Speaker 8: borderline hurt that could possibly turn into an injury. Would
• 4:59
Speaker 8: you sit out a game that, I mean, if you're
• 5:01
  Speaker 8: a Lebron, I say yes.
• 5:03
Speaker 3: But I think the problem with that and I understand
• 5:05
Speaker 3: and that's actually exactly exactly, But the problem is he
• 5:09
Speaker 3: didn't tell the NBA. He didn't tell them that he
• 5:13
Speaker 3: wasn't playing, but just right before the game. And again,
• 5:16
Speaker 3: and to me, PK's comments weren't necessarily about the All
• 5:21
Speaker 3: Star Game. His comments were about this is Lebron's era,
• 5:26
Speaker 3: and this is a terrible era to watch basketball, and
• 5:29
Speaker 3: it starts with Lebron. So is this Lebron's fault as
• 5:33
Speaker 3: to what we're seeing? Because I think what we can
• 5:36
Speaker 3: say is that during this era, this is the era
• 5:39
Speaker 3: of power player empowerment, and this was ushered in by Lebron.
• 5:43
Speaker 3: But kind of the other side of that is that
• 5:46
Speaker 3: players ain't playing hard every game. You're not getting the
• 5:51
Speaker 3: night in, the night out games that just the regular
• 5:53
  Speaker 3: season games.
• 5:53
Speaker 4: They aren't really competitive. Some are just bad watches.
• 5:57
Speaker 3: Guys don't want to play back to back, low management,
• 6:00
Speaker 3: banana boat boy, banana boat boys.
• 6:04
Speaker 4: Just that whole vibe. It's just not competitive and it's
• 6:08
Speaker 4: not like fierce like it once was.
• 6:10
  Speaker 7: So it's a it's a culture is shit.
• 6:12
Speaker 3: It's a culture issue, and the culture starts with Lebron.
• 6:15
Speaker 3: According to Pika and and again, if you see that,
• 6:19
Speaker 3: let's say you're a college star, okay, and and and
• 6:22
Speaker 3: you're you're gonna end up in the NBA and you're
• 6:26
Speaker 3: gonna likely be a top pick. Who are you looking
• 6:31
Speaker 3: at and what's what what example is he showing? And
• 6:35
Speaker 3: again to his sitting out. If I read this right,
• 6:40
Speaker 3: they weren't aware of that until late and he's just
• 6:44
Speaker 3: a few hours, just.
• 6:45
Speaker 4: Hours before the game.
• 6:47
Speaker 3: Now, I can't say that I know the NBA structure
• 6:52
Speaker 3: of how injuries work and how you and who decides
• 6:56
Speaker 3: if you're playing or not. I know in the NFL
• 7:00
Speaker 3: you go to the trainer, if you don't go to
• 7:02
Speaker 3: the trainer and you're talking about your out but you
• 7:05
  Speaker 3: got issues.
• 7:06
Speaker 4: Yeah, this is an All Star game. It might work different.
• 7:08
Speaker 3: Ye, but I'm gonna say, yes it does. But before,
• 7:14
Speaker 3: if you know you're not gonna play, you're taking somebody's seat.
• 7:17
Speaker 4: That that part is true. So if I know I'm
• 7:20
  Speaker 4: not gonna play.
• 7:23
Speaker 3: At the time that I say I'm not gonna play,
• 7:25
Speaker 3: I'm gonna give someone else an opportunity. I'm in the
• 7:29
Speaker 3: Pro Bowl and I all of a sudden, I'm in Hawaii,
• 7:32
  Speaker 3: all expenses paid, and I'm I'm I walk I walk
• 7:35
Speaker 3: out with no gear on day of the game, and
• 7:40
Speaker 3: you say you're hurt, Say I'm hurt.
• 7:42
  Speaker 4: How's that?
• 7:43
Speaker 3: But see, to me, that's just not the issue. The
• 7:47
Speaker 3: issue is the culture that's being laid to me, regardless
• 7:50
Speaker 3: of whether he plays an All Star game, Like, who
• 7:52
  Speaker 3: really cares?
• 7:53
Speaker 4: Don't you know what I'm saying. I think people do.
• 7:55
Speaker 3: I think the people the people do care about some
• 7:58
Speaker 3: people do care about the All Star Game.
• 8:03
Speaker 4: The ones who watched, the ones who watched. But here's
• 8:06
  Speaker 4: my things.
• 8:07
Speaker 7: Paid for tickets to.
• 8:09
Speaker 4: Get absolutely absolutely and the reality of it.
• 8:15
Speaker 3: In my contract, I might have an incentive if I
• 8:18
Speaker 3: make the All Star Game, then I get extra number.
• 8:22
Speaker 3: And thatay, yes, absolutely, and I'm going to make the case.
• 8:28
  Speaker 3: And I can't prove this, but I know I can
• 8:30
Speaker 3: tell you and and and and both of you all
• 8:32
Speaker 3: kind of have a good understanding of a locker room
• 8:36
Speaker 3: dude lady. When there's that dude that's in the locker room,
• 8:42
Speaker 3: that's that lady that's in the locker room who thinks
• 8:44
Speaker 3: that they're better than you, and you can just feel it,
• 8:47
Speaker 3: but you kind of got an issue. I can I
• 8:49
Speaker 3: can remember when herschel Walker. I can remember when herschel
• 8:51
Speaker 3: Walker showed up in in the locker room.
• 8:56
  Speaker 9: Bright.
• 8:56
Speaker 3: We wasn't nobody. Everybody had a feeling about him. But
• 9:01
Speaker 3: regardless of how good that Lebron though, and I think
• 9:05
Speaker 3: when we tried no no Lebron, I think the problem
• 9:09
Speaker 3: is is that you don't feel that with Lebron. I
• 9:12
Speaker 3: think that from the conversations that other players had about
• 9:15
Speaker 3: Kobe and Mike, there was that mystique like when they
• 9:18
Speaker 3: walk in, I'm better than you and you're gonna have
• 9:21
Speaker 3: to catch up and you're gonna have to work harder
• 9:22
Speaker 3: to be just as good as me. If not better,
• 9:25
Speaker 3: and I think with Lebron you don't have that. Lebron
• 9:28
Speaker 3: is kind of one of the guys. As far as
• 9:31
Speaker 3: the culture of this current era of the NBA, it's
• 9:35
Speaker 3: like that. I mean you they had a conversation with
• 9:37
Speaker 3: like Anthony Edwards, who's a young gun out there place
• 9:40
Speaker 3: with Minnesota, like, and they was talking about who's the
• 9:42
Speaker 3: face of the league when Lebron goes, and he was like, well,
• 9:44
  Speaker 3: I don't want it.
• 9:45
Speaker 4: Why wouldn't you want it?
• 9:47
Speaker 3: Kobe was starved for when Mike was leaving, and we
• 9:50
Speaker 3: don't have that. So I think the problem is Lebron
• 9:53
Speaker 3: is one of the guys. He's too close to the ground,
• 9:56
  Speaker 3: He's he doesn't demand that.
• 9:58
Speaker 8: Or well, okay, I'm just gonna buck it up. I'm
• 10:02
Speaker 8: gonna go back to the whole premise of the video.
• 10:04
Speaker 8: First of all, there's an inherent problem between comparing hockey
• 10:08
Speaker 8: and basketball, folks. I just feel like that's comparing apples
• 10:11
Speaker 8: and oranges. The whole nature of hockey is physicality, it's
• 10:16
Speaker 8: you know, it's trash talk, it's all the things that
• 10:18
Speaker 8: the NBA has kind of weaned out of their game,
• 10:22
Speaker 8: and rightly so, I mean the NBA in the NFL,
• 10:24
Speaker 8: they they've kind of looked at their their their sports,
• 10:28
Speaker 8: their sports or perspective sports as a business, and so
• 10:32
Speaker 8: they've kind of toned down, you know, what they're allowing
• 10:36
Speaker 8: their players to do. Compared to hockey and hockey those
• 10:39
Speaker 8: players are probably of all the professional leagues, they're the
• 10:41
Speaker 8: least paid, correct, And so who knows what their contracts
• 10:46
Speaker 8: look like. Who knows, you know, it could be something
• 10:48
Speaker 8: that they aren't. If they don't play, they don't they
• 10:50
Speaker 8: don't get paid. Yeah, so who knows. I mean to me, though,
• 10:54
Speaker 8: the whole idea of comparing hockey and basketball in any
• 10:59
Speaker 8: way and are really it's kind of ludicrous.
• 11:01
  Speaker 4: But he's comparing effort. I don't think.
• 11:05
Speaker 3: I'm with you because he didn't say anything about money, anything.
• 11:08
  Speaker 7: Anything about money.
• 11:10
Speaker 8: But he did talk about Warriors and that you know,
• 11:12
Speaker 8: the hockey players go out there and they're always playing.
• 11:14
  Speaker 7: You know, it's it's a different game, it's a different.
• 11:16
Speaker 3: But I would I would argue that the NBA and
• 11:20
Speaker 3: the NFL eradicating those issues out of the league.
• 11:23
Speaker 4: It hurt the league. Did it hurt to watch it?
• 11:26
Speaker 3: Because the NFL is not the same to watch all
• 11:28
Speaker 3: those you know, the safety concerns as far as basketball, they've.
• 11:31
Speaker 4: Taken all the physicality out of it.
• 11:33
Speaker 3: And if we and if we box, if we box
• 11:36
Speaker 3: in let's just say the All Star Game and you
• 11:41
Speaker 3: there's no comparison. I mean, nobody particularly likes the NBA
• 11:46
Speaker 3: All Star Game because there because because there's nothing. So
• 11:52
  Speaker 3: I think what's happening is you you've got you've got
• 11:56
  Speaker 3: a guy who's a hockey guy who if they're playing
• 11:59
Speaker 3: the All Star Game.
• 12:00
Speaker 4: If they're playing the game, they're just saying, anytime they
• 12:02
  Speaker 4: hit the ice.
• 12:03
Speaker 3: What he's to me, what he's saying is anytime that
• 12:06
Speaker 3: we hit the ice, we hit it with with all
• 12:10
  Speaker 3: our heart.
• 12:12
Speaker 4: We're gonna give everything that we got to.
• 12:15
Speaker 8: That didn't they play other countries though in there like
• 12:18
  Speaker 8: almost a world.
• 12:19
Speaker 7: Yes, that's gonna take more heart.
• 12:21
Speaker 8: That's gonna put a whole different attitude on the way
• 12:24
Speaker 8: you play besides an intramural game.
• 12:26
Speaker 3: True, But but you go back to Kobe, you go
• 12:31
Speaker 3: back to Michael, and they were playing against you know,
• 12:35
Speaker 3: they weren't playing against another country.
• 12:36
Speaker 4: They were playing against guys that they were playing the league.
• 12:38
Speaker 4: And they going off and.
• 12:39
Speaker 3: Again were getting lost in the All Star Game. Forget
• 12:42
Speaker 3: the All Star Game. I'm saying about that got His
• 12:45
Speaker 3: comments were a direct shot and Lebron and the culture
• 12:48
  Speaker 3: of the NBA.
• 12:49
Speaker 4: This is what that's about. Okay.
• 12:51
Speaker 3: So okay, So tell me, tell me directly, are you
• 12:56
Speaker 3: do you buy that?
• 12:57
Speaker 4: I do buy it? Okay, if you look at the
• 12:59
Speaker 4: current like I said, if you look at this current era,
• 13:02
  Speaker 4: it's just not like I said, it's.
• 13:05
Speaker 3: Almost Yeah, the whole body playing, it's just not I
• 13:10
Speaker 3: won't say not competitive, but it's not fierce. It's too friendly,
• 13:15
Speaker 3: it's too homeboy, it's too like like I said, players,
• 13:19
Speaker 3: some players like Paul George are more concerned about their
• 13:24
Speaker 3: podcast than they are playing. We got a Joe LMB
• 13:28
Speaker 3: who's about to make fifty sixty million dollars a year
• 13:31
Speaker 3: and you're just not playing.
• 13:33
  Speaker 4: We got Yo.
• 13:34
Speaker 3: Yokic, not Yokis, but Luka Donna's who got traded in
• 13:40
Speaker 3: the prime of his career, and what they were able
• 13:43
Speaker 3: to say about him, whether it's true or not.
• 13:45
Speaker 4: Man, you don't take care of yourself, not in shape.
• 13:48
Speaker 3: How can you say that about a premier play That
• 13:50
Speaker 3: would never be the question about a premier player, And
• 13:55
  Speaker 3: decades ago, and.
• 13:56
Speaker 4: To your point, Okay, he seems okay now.
• 14:01
Speaker 3: But it's a LA's different. You can't hide in LA. Well,
• 14:04
Speaker 3: so so I'm just making the case. Okay, so now
• 14:08
Speaker 3: you move him, So now he's playing. So maybe this
• 14:09
  Speaker 3: issue was you.
• 14:11
Speaker 4: It could have been.
• 14:12
Speaker 3: But the fact of the matters, you traded any for
• 14:13
Speaker 3: nothing that I agree. So what I'm saying the overall
• 14:17
Speaker 3: culture is that everybody if that expendable based on your
• 14:21
Speaker 3: lack of grit. The problem is with the players and
• 14:25
Speaker 3: the problems with the culture of the.
• 14:27
Speaker 8: Players and the fans are buying into what Hollis is saying.
• 14:30
Speaker 8: Did you want some of the comments on this video,
• 14:33
Speaker 8: I mean some of the comments. I mean I always
• 14:34
Speaker 8: like to read the comments to see what people are,
• 14:36
Speaker 8: what their vibe is over the whole thing. And some
• 14:38
Speaker 8: of them were like, the NBA is the worst major sport.
• 14:41
Speaker 8: Their players don't care. Players love money, not the sport.
• 14:45
Speaker 8: It's one of the you know, talking and then also
• 14:47
Speaker 8: the interest in the hockey. I mean, people were like
• 14:50
Speaker 8: promoting it, like saying they've got a new fan in me,
• 14:53
Speaker 8: you know. But to me, I'm gonna throw this out there,
• 14:56
Speaker 8: Like I said, the NBA All Star game is more
• 14:58
Speaker 8: of an intramural game.
• 14:59
  Speaker 7: I mean, sorry, you're.
• 15:00
Speaker 8: Gonna get more fired up, especially and I'm gonna throw
• 15:03
Speaker 8: this out there. I'm not going to go there, but
• 15:04
Speaker 8: I am gonna kind of kind of, you know, kind
• 15:06
Speaker 8: of throw a little bit of indication there in our
• 15:09
Speaker 8: political comment right now. The USA playing Canada was a
• 15:13
Speaker 8: big deal. Okay, we know there's been.
• 15:15
Speaker 7: Things going on, and so.
• 15:17
Speaker 8: That that caused a little more interest in the hockey
• 15:20
Speaker 8: game than normal. And then once people watched it, they
• 15:24
Speaker 8: see the you know, then the physicality of it. Like
• 15:26
  Speaker 8: you said, you know, they're they're they're into it. They've
• 15:28
Speaker 8: got that warrior spirit and so you know, they may
• 15:33
Speaker 8: gain some more fans from this. But I think, like
• 15:35
Speaker 8: you said, Hollis and and and Carl NBA has some
• 15:38
Speaker 8: issues they they I think I've said this before, you
• 15:41
  Speaker 8: can't manufacture soul.
• 15:43
Speaker 7: They just go out there and they just a lot
• 15:46
Speaker 7: of times go through the motions. They're they're out there
• 15:48
Speaker 7: to collect a check.
• 15:48
Speaker 8: They don't they don't act like they care, you know,
• 15:51
Speaker 8: until the playoffs now that that's when they start to
• 15:53
Speaker 8: pick up their pace. But regular season, I think we've
• 15:56
Speaker 8: all said this before. I could care less if I
• 15:58
Speaker 8: watch a game. I mean, I may watch pieces here there,
• 16:00
Speaker 8: but I'm not gonna sit for a full four quarters
• 16:02
Speaker 8: because you know, it's just it's the same thing over and.
• 16:05
Speaker 6: Over, like you said.
• 16:06
Speaker 3: And the fact of the matter is is like again,
• 16:08
Speaker 3: because the heads of the NBA Adam Silver. What they
• 16:13
Speaker 3: try to do is they want to tinker it to death.
• 16:16
Speaker 3: You cannot, like you said, you cannot tinker effort. It
• 16:19
Speaker 3: doesn't matter what you do. If you're not gonna put
• 16:21
Speaker 3: out the effort, if you're not gonna go out there,
• 16:23
Speaker 3: if you're not gonna play hard, why should I care
• 16:27
Speaker 3: if the play is sloppy. It's it's like I said,
• 16:29
Speaker 3: it's not fun to watch. That's why again, I know
• 16:32
Speaker 3: the women game is still growing, but I think there's
• 16:35
Speaker 3: a greater appreciation for it because you have so much
• 16:39
Speaker 3: effort and so much dog out there. It's just funner
• 16:42
Speaker 3: to like watch energytically, if you come from watching basketball
• 16:45
Speaker 3: in a certain era.
• 16:48
Speaker 4: I'm one with you on that.
• 16:50
Speaker 3: And one of the things that I try to I
• 16:53
Speaker 3: try to if I'm gonna watch a basketball game, one
• 16:57
Speaker 3: of the things that I want to see I want
• 17:00
Speaker 3: to see the physicality. I want to see the effort
• 17:03
Speaker 3: because when you're when you're going all out, I mean,
• 17:08
Speaker 3: you know you're gonna take a charge, You're gonna push
• 17:10
Speaker 3: a guy. You know what I'm saying, because because it
• 17:12
Speaker 3: matters if you win, it matters, if you get that shot,
• 17:15
Speaker 3: it matters if you get that rebound. You know what
• 17:17
Speaker 3: I'm saying. And I don't and you and to your point, Hollis,
• 17:21
Speaker 3: you don't see that. And I think the visual piece
• 17:25
Speaker 3: of what what we see is is a turnoff altogether.
• 17:32
Speaker 3: And the problem is we can't. I don't know how
• 17:39
  Speaker 3: you fix it.
• 17:41
Speaker 4: I know how you fix it. Give me, please tell
• 17:45
Speaker 4: I don't think you fix it. Number one.
• 17:46
Speaker 3: I don't think you fix it like starting at the NBA.
• 17:50
Speaker 3: I think you you fix it starting at the youth level.
• 17:53
Speaker 3: I think that number one. In the NBA's goal to expand,
• 17:58
Speaker 3: to become a world game, it's become a worst game.
• 18:02
Speaker 4: We are not the euro League right right.
• 18:05
Speaker 3: You have to play American style basketball and that has
• 18:09
Speaker 3: to be promoted. So I think to your point, least
• 18:12
Speaker 3: some of those some of the contact and physicality has
• 18:15
Speaker 3: got to come back in the game. I think we
• 18:18
Speaker 3: have to play position basketball. And I think you have
• 18:21
Speaker 3: to teach the game far as just like what the
• 18:24
Speaker 3: NFL has done where they like tinker down and they
• 18:27
Speaker 3: have all the NFL initiative as far as youth sports
• 18:30
Speaker 3: coming all the way up. That's the same thing the
• 18:33
Speaker 3: NBA has to do, and they have to emphasize American
• 18:36
Speaker 3: style basketball and not what we're seeing now.
• 18:38
Speaker 4: All right, well, I sent another I sent another video.
• 18:44
Speaker 3: So to your point of where we need to fix it, yea,
• 18:48
Speaker 3: let's listen to this and see where we go.
• 18:51
Speaker 9: But if we were more honest with young people like
• 18:54
Speaker 9: this and told them the truth like that, we need
• 18:56
Speaker 9: to be in a lot better spot in society than
• 18:59
Speaker 9: we are right now, because all we tell young people
• 19:01
Speaker 9: now is it's okay, oh it got tough, it's okay
• 19:04
Speaker 9: to quit, or you're right, you're oppressed, like you're not
• 19:07
Speaker 9: having success and it's not your fault. If we just
• 19:10
Speaker 9: regardless of what you look like, where you're from, whatever,
• 19:13
Speaker 9: if we could have that type of mindset of life
• 19:16
Speaker 9: is hard. When life gets hard and life gets tough,
• 19:19
Speaker 9: that's when you find out how tough you are.
• 19:22
Speaker 6: And that's in reference to the Rick Patino halftime speech.
• 19:25
Speaker 8: Correct, yes, yes, they couldn't play that one would they
• 19:29
Speaker 8: would have to edit it so much.
• 19:31
Speaker 3: That I mean so to your point, and at the
• 19:36
Speaker 3: younger levels all the way, they don't get the example
• 19:42
Speaker 3: at the pro level. So what does college look like?
• 19:45
Speaker 3: You don't get the example at the college level. What's
• 19:47
Speaker 3: high school look like? Then what you bring in is
• 19:50
Speaker 3: you bring you level where a lot of parents think
• 19:54
Speaker 3: that their kid is is great, can't wait till he
• 19:56
Speaker 3: gets to high school or middle school, and then by
• 19:59
Speaker 3: the t time they get to high school, they might
• 20:01
Speaker 3: not even be playing, and or they don't know how
• 20:04
Speaker 3: to work. They don't there's so many kids, I think
• 20:07
Speaker 3: in our in the Canal Valley, I think that there
• 20:10
Speaker 3: are so many young kids who have has the foundation,
• 20:16
Speaker 3: has some roots of being able to.
• 20:18
Speaker 4: Be a really good player.
• 20:21
Speaker 3: But I think that they just don't know how to
• 20:23
Speaker 3: get there and they end up finding themselves mad at
• 20:29
Speaker 3: because the coach put them on the bench because they
• 20:31
  Speaker 3: didn't do this.
• 20:32
Speaker 4: You know, they're crying.
• 20:33
Speaker 3: You know you talk about the youth, I mean we
• 20:35
Speaker 3: got kids crying because they got mad because they missed
• 20:39
  Speaker 3: a shot.
• 20:40
Speaker 4: You know, we're losing game, ain't even over.
• 20:43
Speaker 3: I mean, just like all of that kind of stuff
• 20:46
Speaker 3: that can you imagine crying to your to a coach
• 20:51
Speaker 3: coming off. I think here's the issue, right when we
• 20:54
Speaker 3: talk about that, we don't have a coacher now where
• 20:57
Speaker 3: you take your kid to practice, drop them off, and
• 20:59
Speaker 3: then come back and get them when it's over. We're
• 21:02
Speaker 3: not allowing coaches just to coach, right. We are hovering, helicoptering,
• 21:08
Speaker 3: and we're not that coach just can't coach right because
• 21:12
Speaker 3: he has to coach kids, he has to kind of
• 21:15
Speaker 3: a low key coach to parents, he has to coach
• 21:17
Speaker 3: the crowd he had let coach him or her has
• 21:20
Speaker 3: to do too much, and they just can't coach, and
• 21:22
Speaker 3: they can't coach in a manner that's just going to
• 21:25
Speaker 3: be raw and honest and again raw, honest.
• 21:28
  Speaker 4: Again.
• 21:28
Speaker 3: We want to be uh, we want to be nice,
• 21:31
Speaker 3: but we want to be kind but not nice, right.
• 21:34
Speaker 3: We want to just be able to as a coach
• 21:36
Speaker 3: just express how it is and be able to teach
• 21:39
Speaker 3: you from there. But coaches can't do that anymore. And
• 21:42
Speaker 3: then then some of the coaches they haven't took the
• 21:45
Speaker 3: time to really learn their craft, right. So I think
• 21:49
Speaker 3: the problem is with the coaching and as a like
• 21:53
Speaker 3: a sort of an auxiliary problem is parents not allowing
• 21:56
Speaker 3: coaches just to coach, and nobody can take honor conversations anymore.
• 22:02
Speaker 3: Only only thing I'm gonna I'm gonna question that you
• 22:06
Speaker 3: said is you know, because I'm sure there's a coach
• 22:10
Speaker 3: that don't that can't coach or doesn't know how to coach,
• 22:13
Speaker 3: or don't know how to coach all the details of
• 22:15
Speaker 3: a position or period.
• 22:17
Speaker 4: Right, Okay, But I.
• 22:21
Speaker 3: Think, you know, I think everybody thinks that maybe because
• 22:26
  Speaker 3: I don't think it's always the coach. And I know
• 22:29
Speaker 3: I'm not saying that you said that, but I think
• 22:32
Speaker 3: if I tell you to do this and you got
• 22:36
Speaker 3: a problem with doing that, you ain't coachable anyway. That's
• 22:40
Speaker 3: not necessarily true. That's not necessarily true because what I'm
• 22:44
  Speaker 3: saying as a coach, there's a psychology element. That's what
• 22:46
Speaker 3: I'm saying you as a coach. That can't just be
• 22:49
Speaker 3: the solution. There's a psychology to coaching.
• 22:53
Speaker 4: So you you got a number one know the kids, Hey.
• 22:56
Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Let me ask you this,
• 22:58
Speaker 3: Let me ask you this. So in your position, whoever
• 23:04
Speaker 3: is above you and he says do this, you may
• 23:09
Speaker 3: have the ability to say, well, do you want me
• 23:11
Speaker 3: to do it this way, this way, this way, that way,
• 23:13
  Speaker 3: that way, whatever.
• 23:14
Speaker 4: But but but you're gonna do it.
• 23:16
Speaker 3: So but if you don't have no question about what
• 23:19
Speaker 3: he said, you're gonna likely do what do what they say? Yeah,
• 23:23
Speaker 3: but you can't compare yes, because you can't compare an
• 23:27
Speaker 3: adult to a child. A child don't have that level
• 23:30
Speaker 3: of understanding. So what I'm saying, and there you have.
• 23:32
Speaker 4: It when you grew up, when you came through football.
• 23:35
Speaker 3: No, I'm telling you why I had it, because there
• 23:37
Speaker 3: was consequences to it. That coach could, darn there whip
• 23:41
Speaker 3: me at VARs, being a like a in a small kid.
• 23:44
Speaker 3: It was the different consequences that you had to deal
• 23:47
Speaker 3: with that you don't have to deal with now because
• 23:49
Speaker 3: you know that coach he ain't gonna cush you, she
• 23:50
Speaker 3: or he can't really cuts you out.
• 23:52
  Speaker 4: They ain't.
• 23:52
Speaker 3: They definitely ain't putting their hands on you. So it's
• 23:54
Speaker 3: no consequences out. Well, that's what I'm saying.
• 23:57
Speaker 4: When that when your mom and dad dropped you off
• 23:59
Speaker 4: of that field or the base down on a basketball court,
• 24:01
Speaker 4: that was your de facto parent.
• 24:03
Speaker 3: Absolutely, you know what I'm saying, And a lot of
• 24:05
Speaker 3: those coaches were teachers, so not only did they have
• 24:08
Speaker 3: a knowledge base of whatever sport they were doing, they
• 24:11
Speaker 3: understood how to teach, like I gotta.
• 24:13
Speaker 4: Teach this one that way.
• 24:14
Speaker 3: I got to do it that way, and it's little
• 24:16
Speaker 3: things that I could do to get my point across
• 24:18
Speaker 3: to him, herd, or them. So I think again, just
• 24:21
Speaker 3: the culture of how they are able or what they're
• 24:24
Speaker 3: not really able to do as far as instruction wise,
• 24:27
Speaker 3: has changed, and it's the job has almost become impossible. Well,
• 24:30
Speaker 3: Rick Bettino, NBA NCAA Championship coach is coaching effort during
• 24:38
Speaker 3: the halftime of a game at a Division one basketball program.
• 24:43
Speaker 3: He's literally coaching effort. Yes, that should tell you everything
• 24:48
Speaker 3: you need to know right there.
• 24:51
Speaker 7: I'm gonna put this out there.
• 24:52
Speaker 8: I do agree with the fact that coaches need to
• 24:54
Speaker 8: be knowledgeable about the game. They need to understand how
• 24:58
Speaker 8: to coach the kids. I think the main thing that
• 25:01
Speaker 8: they need to make though, is a connection. If those
• 25:03
Speaker 8: kids don't feel like that coach has their best interests
• 25:06
Speaker 8: at heart and cares about them, it doesn't matter what
• 25:09
Speaker 8: the coach does. It doesn't matter what the coach teaches.
• 25:11
Speaker 8: They have to make that that that literal connection with
• 25:15
Speaker 8: the kid and the trust factor.
• 25:18
Speaker 3: But what does that connection look like though, Well, because
• 25:21
Speaker 3: the coach cussed me out, I guess that was a connection.
• 25:24
Speaker 4: I don't know, because what connection.
• 25:28
Speaker 8: Kids and teams are different, right, And in society today,
• 25:31
Speaker 8: I mean, sports is just a reflection of society. And
• 25:34
Speaker 8: so when you look at outside of the sports boundaries,
• 25:37
Speaker 8: that's society today. I mean, people don't take criticism. Well,
• 25:43
  Speaker 8: it's a it's a self I don't know.
• 25:45
Speaker 7: I don't want to say self.
• 25:46
Speaker 4: Absorbed, self loathing problems.
• 25:48
Speaker 7: Well, self loathing is a good way to put it.
• 25:50
Speaker 8: But I just feel like the coaches have to understand
• 25:55
Speaker 8: their players, and the players are all going to be
• 25:57
Speaker 8: different team to team, year to year.
• 25:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, So.
• 26:02
Speaker 3: I have the luxury of being able to have both
• 26:06
Speaker 3: of those types somewhat both of those types of coaches
• 26:10
Speaker 3: at Marshall and in Minnesota, I had Bob Prewit and
• 26:15
Speaker 3: Sonny Randall. Sonny Randall's gonna yell and cuss you all
• 26:20
Speaker 3: day long, grab your face mask, pull you to him
• 26:24
Speaker 3: and cuss you out, and you gonna take it, or
• 26:27
Speaker 3: you ain't gonna play all right, coach prewit is gonna
• 26:31
  Speaker 3: laugh and joke.
• 26:33
  Speaker 4: Now.
• 26:33
Speaker 3: He's gonna get you ready. He's got all the knowledge
• 26:35
Speaker 3: to get you ready. As we've all seen Bud Grant.
• 26:39
Speaker 3: He ain't talking to you. He ain't gonna like walk
• 26:41
Speaker 3: by and say, hey, Hollers, how you doing. You're doing
• 26:43
Speaker 3: all right, you know, but he ain't gonna give you
• 26:45
Speaker 3: none of that. He'll walk right by you fifty times
• 26:47
Speaker 3: in practice. Do something wrong. Now I go back over
• 26:53
Speaker 3: and I got Pete Carroll who's cracking jokes and and
• 26:56
Speaker 3: all of that kind of stuff. The issue you isn't
• 27:00
Speaker 3: really the coach. In my mind, I'm not thinking that
• 27:04
Speaker 3: it's the coach. It is you, as the athlete who
• 27:07
Speaker 3: have to adjust to what the system is. You're saying,
• 27:11
Speaker 3: Hollis is shaking his head. But here's here's the thing.
• 27:13
Speaker 3: But here's the thing. When you when you take when
• 27:15
Speaker 3: you take it, and you say, well, sports is a
• 27:18
Speaker 3: good example of work.
• 27:21
Speaker 4: You when you're told by your boss what to do.
• 27:25
Speaker 3: You may not like what you do, but you got
• 27:27
Speaker 3: to do it regardless of it, and when and where
• 27:31
Speaker 3: and how do we get that? Because what is what's
• 27:34
Speaker 3: supposed to be? What is supposed to what is sports?
• 27:36
Speaker 3: Because sports is not about winning championships. It's not about
• 27:39
Speaker 3: me in an all proach, not being about all states,
• 27:41
Speaker 3: it's not being it's not none of that. Okay, that's
• 27:44
Speaker 3: none of the lessons that you get. The question is
• 27:48
Speaker 3: whatever you get out of it has to be something
• 27:51
Speaker 3: that's gonna impact you going toward going forward in life.
• 27:56
Speaker 3: And to me, it is understanding of take making, harsh criticism,
• 28:02
Speaker 3: taking advice, getting in trouble, all those kind of.
• 28:06
Speaker 4: Things when you do wrong. When you you you can't
• 28:09
  Speaker 4: keep coming late.
• 28:10
Speaker 3: But the thing is you can't take your antadotical experience
• 28:14
Speaker 3: of how you were because it didn't matter who the
• 28:16
Speaker 3: coach was. When I said, but I gotta get you,
• 28:20
Speaker 3: I gotta get you, no, because it's not I'm not
• 28:22
Speaker 3: talking about me. I'm talking about the structure how it
• 28:25
Speaker 3: has to be. But I'm telling you I know I
• 28:27
Speaker 3: went through it. But what I'm saying, though, it's like
• 28:30
Speaker 3: it doesn't for you. It didn't matter who the coach
• 28:32
Speaker 3: was because you had something a goal locked in your
• 28:34
Speaker 3: head when you was a kid and nothing was going
• 28:37
Speaker 3: to stop you. So for any type of coaching, it
• 28:40
Speaker 3: didn't matter. It didn't matter if it was a smooth
• 28:43
Speaker 3: game or harsh. But I'm saying for the kid who's
• 28:46
Speaker 3: out there who's kind of just their plan, don't really
• 28:49
Speaker 3: have a goal what they want to do, you have
• 28:52
Speaker 3: to coach that that kid different and as a coach,
• 28:55
Speaker 3: you have to be allowed to coach. I need to
• 28:57
Speaker 3: cuss you out, I need to hug you, I need
• 28:59
Speaker 3: to do this. And I'm saying now, is that we
• 29:02
Speaker 3: because we came up in a different era where coaches
• 29:04
  Speaker 3: can do that.
• 29:05
Speaker 4: Coaches can't do that now.
• 29:06
Speaker 3: Coaches literally cannot coach the sport that they are an
• 29:11
Speaker 3: expert in quote unquote it is. It is clear why
• 29:13
Speaker 3: I was unsuccessful and why I got out of it
• 29:16
Speaker 3: because I'm coaching a team now, I can take you
• 29:21
Speaker 3: and sit you down and have a conversation. Right even
• 29:25
Speaker 3: when I was at State, I'm okay with sitting down
• 29:28
Speaker 3: and telling and explaining to you what you have, what
• 29:30
Speaker 3: you don't have, what you need to be doing to
• 29:32
Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff. But when it comes down
• 29:36
Speaker 3: to you doing something that that's out of why row
• 29:41
Speaker 3: I'm cussing you out.
• 29:42
  Speaker 4: I ain't.
• 29:43
  Speaker 3: I ain't gonna I'm not I'm not gonna you do
• 29:46
Speaker 3: something and it doesn't really matter what your goal is.
• 29:52
  Speaker 3: It's it's it's the life lessons that we're missing. See,
• 29:55
Speaker 3: it's unfair to say to me that it's because I
• 30:00
Speaker 3: had a goal to get somewhere, I had some coaching.
• 30:02
Speaker 4: No, it is not.
• 30:05
Speaker 3: I had coaches that I'll make the case that most
• 30:08
Speaker 3: people could not could not, could not. You can deal
• 30:11
Speaker 3: with them because you had a go set, so it
• 30:13
Speaker 3: didn't matter who was no front me.
• 30:14
Speaker 4: I went through them because I had a mom who
• 30:16
Speaker 4: gave me an example.
• 30:18
Speaker 3: I had a dad right who who coaches What happens
• 30:24
Speaker 3: when you That's what I'm saying as a coach. As
• 30:26
Speaker 3: a coach, I have to coach that player, and I
• 30:30
Speaker 3: can't just think about the team, or I can't think
• 30:32
Speaker 3: about just holistically. I mean, I have to think about
• 30:34
Speaker 3: that and obviously consider all that, but I still have
• 30:36
Speaker 3: to coach each individual player, and I have to coach
• 30:39
Speaker 3: that player a little differently one to one to get
• 30:43
Speaker 3: maybe the best. And not only do I have to
• 30:44
Speaker 3: coach them, but I have to figure like I said,
• 30:46
Speaker 3: it's a psychology to figure out how I can get
• 30:48
Speaker 3: the best out of these players.
• 30:51
Speaker 8: And I'll go a step Further, I think these coaches,
• 30:54
Speaker 8: the successful coaches at every level of any sport, have charisma,
• 30:58
Speaker 8: They have that intent.
• 31:00
  Speaker 4: That's a fair you know.
• 31:01
  Speaker 7: I mean, if there's just.
• 31:02
Speaker 8: Something about those people, those coaches that the players they're
• 31:05
Speaker 8: attracted to it it's it's a type of energy.
• 31:08
  Speaker 3: I think they're they're I think they're attracted to the
• 31:11
Speaker 3: actual wins and losses that that.
• 31:14
Speaker 4: Will put up even before they get there.
• 31:15
Speaker 3: But hold your hold your thought holiday, Let's take a

• 32:49
  Speaker 2: the conversation.
• 32:52
Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back after a break,
• 32:54
Speaker 3: and I had to Interruptlesea, Lisa jump back in and
• 32:59
Speaker 3: go for where you.
• 33:00
Speaker 6: Oh no, no, just what I said before it's in.
• 33:02
Speaker 8: You know, the these successful coaches at regardless of what
• 33:06
Speaker 8: level and what sport. They have an intangible and that
• 33:08
Speaker 8: is charisma. And I know you mentioned something about, you know,
• 33:11
Speaker 8: the wins and losses help, you know, make that charisma.
• 33:15
Speaker 8: I think it has to be there from the start.
• 33:17
Speaker 8: I think the wins and losses follow the charisma because
• 33:20
Speaker 8: they motivate those players. They find ways to get to
• 33:23
Speaker 8: those players to bring out their best regardless of where
• 33:26
  Speaker 8: they are.
• 33:27
  Speaker 7: Look at Rick.
• 33:27
Speaker 8: Patino what he's done at Saint John's this year. I
• 33:30
Speaker 8: mean that team is like twenty four and four. Yeah,
• 33:33
Speaker 8: and last year I don't even think they made the tournament.
• 33:34
Speaker 8: I mean they're expected to possibly win it. And that's
• 33:37
Speaker 8: where he's went everywhere he goes. So there's a perfect
• 33:40
Speaker 8: example of what I'm talking about. I feel like there's
• 33:42
Speaker 8: just some some people that are just they have naturally
• 33:46
Speaker 8: had that that spirit about them, that attraction that people
• 33:49
Speaker 8: respect and want to to do what they say.
• 33:52
Speaker 3: And to be a good coach, you have to win.
• 33:54
Speaker 3: Like I don't, I agree, you have to win. Agree
• 33:57
Speaker 3: you cannot. It's like giving the job. Example, you can't
• 34:00
Speaker 3: be you know, last place in whatever sales position and
• 34:03
Speaker 3: expect people to follow you.
• 34:05
Speaker 4: The coach. You have to win. That's part of the gear. Sure, right, and.
• 34:09
Speaker 3: I and by that, but at there are there are
• 34:14
Speaker 3: times when great coaches just don't have great players. And
• 34:21
Speaker 3: when that happens, When that happens, you know, the question becomes, well,
• 34:26
Speaker 3: now what you do? Now those coaches are even able
• 34:29
Speaker 3: to get people to come in, they can draft people
• 34:34
Speaker 3: that can play, they know what they need all of
• 34:37
Speaker 3: So to that great coach, he or she has the
• 34:40
Speaker 3: ability to to to rebuild right and get the best
• 34:45
Speaker 3: out of what they have. And because they could be
• 34:49
Speaker 3: five and five and maybe that's the best you got,
• 34:52
Speaker 3: I think that and maybe to maybe maybe to two
• 34:55
Speaker 3: and two and whatever, two and whatever, maybe it might
• 34:57
Speaker 3: be the best you got. So I think a great
• 34:59
Speaker 3: coach coaches are able to get the best, extract the
• 35:02
Speaker 3: best out of whatever they have.
• 35:03
Speaker 4: And I think and I think.
• 35:05
  Speaker 12: It's it's it's it's too easy to to point out
• 35:09
Speaker 12: the coach and assume that's the reason, you know, because
• 35:14
Speaker 12: a lot of times that's not the reason.
• 35:17
  Speaker 3: I would. I would just it's it's always the reason.
• 35:20
Speaker 3: The coaching is the reason. Now again I'm not saying
• 35:23
Speaker 3: there's this factors that don't affect that, Like I just said, parents,
• 35:26
Speaker 3: particularly a youth in high school sports, they have just
• 35:30
Speaker 3: killed it pretty much. But like I'm saying, as a coach,
• 35:33
Speaker 3: you have to coach through it and you got to
• 35:35
Speaker 3: figure out a way around it.
• 35:37
Speaker 4: But but but that's not blame, that's that's work.
• 35:40
Speaker 3: That's work they're putting. But at the end of the day,
• 35:44
Speaker 3: everybody can see it. Everybody can see what what the
• 35:47
Speaker 3: negativity is. They get it the coach. You're looking at
• 35:51
Speaker 3: a coach who's out there doing all he can do
• 35:55
Speaker 3: and you're not winning. You you you go by? Can
• 36:00
Speaker 3: you you look at you? Look at you look at
• 36:01
Speaker 3: South Charleston with with the wrestler. Okay, this just this
• 36:06
Speaker 3: past season. All the kids, all the best kids have
• 36:11
  Speaker 3: already left.
• 36:12
Speaker 4: All right, So all.
• 36:13
  Speaker 3: He's he's got young kids.
• 36:16
  Speaker 4: Okay, that's all he's got.
• 36:18
Speaker 3: Those young kids may not have ever really had a
• 36:21
Speaker 3: chance to be on the field. They may not be
• 36:24
Speaker 3: the best, but the best that he's got. So he
• 36:28
Speaker 3: has to put them on the field. And hope you
• 36:32
Speaker 3: can't put that on him. What you put that on
• 36:35
Speaker 3: is you put that on the political piece of this
• 36:39
Speaker 3: that allows kids to go wherever they want, parents who
• 36:42
Speaker 3: want to go where they want to go, they want
• 36:44
Speaker 3: to take their kids where they want to go.
• 36:45
Speaker 4: You got to convince them not to go.
• 36:47
Speaker 3: So you no, no, no, no, there ain't no convincing. It's
• 36:51
Speaker 3: on you. You're not you can you Okay, you can.
• 36:55
Speaker 3: You can say that and and and and they'll be
• 36:58
Speaker 3: and and I guarantee there's a whole host of people
• 37:01
  Speaker 3: buying into that.
• 37:02
Speaker 4: You know, I'm saying it's on you.
• 37:03
Speaker 3: I'm not saying again what I'm saying, I'm not saying
• 37:07
Speaker 3: it's a big part of this in which you cannot control.
• 37:10
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 37:11
Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, whatever the record is,
• 37:14
Speaker 3: whatever the I'm not challenging. What I'm saying is it's
• 37:17
Speaker 3: on him. I'm I'm not challenging that. I'm not challenging
• 37:20
Speaker 3: that coach is always going to take the blame. You
• 37:22
Speaker 3: gotta have the shoulders to take the blame. But that
• 37:25
Speaker 3: that does just make it the reality. I mean, I'm
• 37:27
Speaker 3: not I'm not necessarily my question agreeing with that. As
• 37:30
Speaker 3: I said, parents have made it very difficult for coach. Okay,
• 37:34
Speaker 3: and and if you're making it difficult for me, then
• 37:37
Speaker 3: then then I can make the case then at that
• 37:40
Speaker 3: point you're making my job harder.
• 37:44
Speaker 4: Yeah, but you. But that's that's the environment.
• 37:47
Speaker 3: That's the environment that we So it's just like you
• 37:49
Speaker 3: have to figure out a way to coach through.
• 37:50
  Speaker 4: I have listen, I have no and I have I
• 37:53
Speaker 4: have said this forever.
• 37:55
Speaker 3: I have no issue with my record at West Virginia
• 37:58
Speaker 3: State none. I have no issue with my record at
• 38:01
Speaker 3: West Virginia, I mean at South Trust and High School
• 38:04
  Speaker 3: at all.
• 38:05
  Speaker 4: None.
• 38:06
  Speaker 3: It don't it don't change who I am. It don't
• 38:08
Speaker 3: make me feel like, oh God, I'm so bad. No,
• 38:10
Speaker 3: we don't do any of that. But what I do
• 38:13
Speaker 3: know in both of those situations that there was work
• 38:19
  Speaker 3: that had.
• 38:19
Speaker 4: To be done, big work that had to be done big.
• 38:22
Speaker 3: At State, at Stayed, I was willing to do it, okay,
• 38:26
Speaker 3: and did it for a while. Okay, got the most
• 38:31
Speaker 3: out of what I think I had, And I think
• 38:35
Speaker 3: in my mind when I look at that, I don't
• 38:38
Speaker 3: judge that on the wins.
• 38:40
Speaker 4: I judge that on the men. Now high school whole
• 38:44
  Speaker 4: another story. Okay.
• 38:46
Speaker 3: In one season, what I realized was parents couldn't see,
• 38:51
Speaker 3: parents didn't want to see what the problem was. The
• 38:56
Speaker 3: people in the bleachers, you know, or or Facebook and
• 39:00
Speaker 3: all those kinds of places talking about you know, taking
• 39:03
  Speaker 3: my kid.
• 39:04
Speaker 4: Fine, now don't take your kid.
• 39:06
  Speaker 3: Let me go because I don't want this, I don't
• 39:10
Speaker 3: need this, and and and and and not because I
• 39:13
Speaker 3: don't care about the kids, because that's what I do
• 39:15
Speaker 3: every single day. The problem is is what you're what
• 39:20
  Speaker 3: you don't know? But you can't No, I can't. No,
• 39:24
Speaker 3: I know, I'm I'm not putting the blame on them.
• 39:26
Speaker 3: I'm saying sounds like no, no, no, no, I did not
• 39:29
Speaker 3: say did I say, did not say? I take the loss?
• 39:32
Speaker 3: I'm taking the loss.
• 39:34
Speaker 8: Yeah, this this issue, it's just got so many layers, really,
• 39:37
Speaker 8: and you could just keep digging and kept finding more.
• 39:40
Speaker 8: But but I really feel like what you're saying about
• 39:43
Speaker 8: the coach takes the blame.
• 39:44
Speaker 7: I understand that to a degree.
• 39:47
Speaker 8: At the other levels, the collegiate level, you know, beyond that,
• 39:50
Speaker 8: the professional level. I think at the high school level,
• 39:53
Speaker 8: that's only a piece of the pot because you've got
• 39:55
Speaker 8: to look at in our just take for example, West Virginia.
• 39:59
Speaker 8: When when a parent decides they want to take their
• 40:01
Speaker 8: their student athlete to a different facility, they're not just
• 40:04
Speaker 8: going to be looking at the coach. They're gonna be
• 40:06
Speaker 8: looking at the actual facility, what kind of academic programs
• 40:10
Speaker 8: are offered there, what kind of a socioeconomic you know,
• 40:15
Speaker 8: what kind of people are they going to be interacting with.
• 40:18
Speaker 8: All of those things play a factor as well in
• 40:20
Speaker 8: the portal. So at the high school level, so I
• 40:23
Speaker 8: feel like, once you you know, get it's really sticky,
• 40:27
Speaker 8: and it's really tricky at the high school level because
• 40:29
  Speaker 8: I really don't feel like it's just about coaching. I
• 40:31
Speaker 8: feel like there's so many other factors that play a part.
• 40:34
Speaker 8: When a parent switches their kids from one place to another,
• 40:37
Speaker 8: they may follow a coach, but more often than not,
• 40:40
Speaker 8: they're looking at the whole picture, the whole program, and
• 40:43
Speaker 8: what they're kids getting into, and.
• 40:46
Speaker 3: Let me, let me, let me say this, and neither
• 40:50
Speaker 3: one of you have to necessarily respond to this. But
• 40:56
Speaker 3: to your point, coach back at South Charleston High School, Okay,
• 41:02
Speaker 3: now his history says, I'm not I'm not going to
• 41:11
Speaker 3: recruit kids from other places. Okay, he's gonna have to
• 41:15
Speaker 3: do that at South Charleston. Okay, there's there's there's no
• 41:18
Speaker 3: option for him to win. There's no way he's winning
• 41:21
Speaker 3: with the with the group that's there. Now, they're just
• 41:24
Speaker 3: too young, got got thrown into the into the system
• 41:28
Speaker 3: because all the kids, all the older kids' best kids
• 41:32
Speaker 3: all left. Okay, So now the bad thing about that
• 41:38
Speaker 3: is he's going to bring some kids in. Some kids
• 41:41
Speaker 3: are gonna want to come and play for him. Now
• 41:45
Speaker 3: what happens is now the parent has to now look
• 41:49
Speaker 3: at well, is somebody going to come in and be
• 41:51
Speaker 3: the quarterback and my son's not gonna play. Is somebody
• 41:55
Speaker 3: gonna come in to be a running back and my
• 41:56
Speaker 3: kid's not gonna play. Somebody gonna be a linebacker and
• 41:59
Speaker 3: my kid's not gonna play. Now the question is my kid.
• 42:03
Speaker 4: Playing or winning? Are we gonna be? Okay?
• 42:08
Speaker 3: When he starts to bring in other kids to win,
• 42:10
Speaker 3: he's not gonna just he's not gonna feel this team
• 42:13
Speaker 3: that's at South Charleston right now.
• 42:15
  Speaker 4: He will not.
• 42:15
Speaker 3: Feel that team come August. With just those players, He's
• 42:22
Speaker 3: gonna be likely gonna bring some Hurricane kids with them,
• 42:26
Speaker 3: probably get some Capital kids to come because he's a
• 42:29
  Speaker 3: he's a coach that has has a has a record
• 42:32
Speaker 3: of getting to the playoffs. He wins, he wins, so
• 42:35
Speaker 3: he's going to be able to get kids to come
• 42:38
Speaker 3: his way. Now, my question is if you're a parent
• 42:42
Speaker 3: in your kids playing and all of a sudden he's
• 42:46
Speaker 3: not playing, how you feeling. That's the reality of it now.
• 42:50
Speaker 3: I think that's pure reality of Okay, that's the reality.
• 42:53
Speaker 3: That don't mean how you feel, no again, but that's
• 42:55
Speaker 3: the reality of it. I think you are at some
• 42:58
Speaker 3: point you're realizing that that's coming if in fact, there
• 43:01
Speaker 3: are other kids going to be coming in, And that's
• 43:03
Speaker 3: the reality of it.
• 43:04
  Speaker 4: Now.
• 43:05
Speaker 3: You have the option you can stay and fight and
• 43:08
Speaker 3: try to get back on the field, or you can
• 43:09
Speaker 3: go somewhere else where you think you can play. But
• 43:11
Speaker 3: that's the reality of what's going on with high school
• 43:14
Speaker 3: sports now. And I don't think anybody's under any disillusion
• 43:17
Speaker 3: that that's probably gonna be. That's potentially a scenario that
• 43:20
  Speaker 3: could happen. So it's I don't it's not it's not
• 43:25
Speaker 3: a problem per se. It is a situation that's going
• 43:27
Speaker 3: to happen. Yeah, I mean, it's gonna that's what I'm saying.
• 43:30
Speaker 8: And if if they want to build a culture of
• 43:32
Speaker 8: you know, the boosters want to win, probably the kids
• 43:35
Speaker 8: that they have, obviously are not the kids that they
• 43:38
Speaker 8: need to field on a team to.
• 43:40
Speaker 4: Be to make need additional development exactly one or the other,
• 43:44
  Speaker 4: so that.
• 43:45
Speaker 3: You might not I mean, maybe you don't play this year,
• 43:46
Speaker 3: maybe or you play sparently and you get on the
• 43:49
Speaker 3: field next two years or whatever. My issue is for
• 43:51
Speaker 3: the kid that's getting ready to it's going to be
• 43:53
Speaker 3: a senior this year, and I know, I get it.
• 43:58
Speaker 4: You gotta go in and you got to if.
• 44:00
Speaker 3: You, if you, if you're going to start work harder,
• 44:05
Speaker 3: and it might. And I just think, like that's the culture,
• 44:08
Speaker 3: that's the psychology that now coaches have to deal with
• 44:11
Speaker 3: and they have to deal with. Again, you have to
• 44:13
Speaker 3: deal with the kids that are coming in. You got
• 44:15
Speaker 3: to deal with the kids that were there, and you
• 44:17
Speaker 3: have to deal with both sets of parents. But you
• 44:19
Speaker 3: have to be prepared to deal with all that. And
• 44:20
Speaker 3: again I'm not saying it's fair that you do, but
• 44:24
Speaker 3: that's the reality of coaching now. So you're not just
• 44:26
Speaker 3: dealing with the players. You have to deal with parents
• 44:29
Speaker 3: on both sides of the arguments. You have to deal
• 44:31
Speaker 3: with administration, you have to deal with it all. Do
• 44:32
Speaker 3: you This is something I don't know. I honestly don't know.
• 44:36
Speaker 3: And and so I'm speculating or I'm asking more so asking,
• 44:41
Speaker 3: so what would make what would make a coach come
• 44:46
Speaker 3: to you and say, hey, look.
• 44:48
Speaker 4: Your son play quarterback.
• 44:51
Speaker 3: He's he's not what we're going to be able to
• 44:54
Speaker 3: need to do whatever whatever we think we're going to
• 44:57
Speaker 3: try to do this season. I'm going to bring a
• 44:59
Speaker 3: couple of back in from from different places. He's likely
• 45:03
Speaker 3: going to be you know, probably you know, third on
• 45:05
Speaker 3: the depth chart. And I just want you to know,
• 45:11
Speaker 3: and I'm just saying that's if if you had, if
• 45:13
Speaker 3: you were able to get that alert in advance, what
• 45:17
  Speaker 3: would you think?
• 45:18
Speaker 4: How would you feel?
• 45:19
Speaker 3: I mean, I thank you for your honesty. I mean
• 45:22
Speaker 3: I would appreciate it. But I'll again, I know coach
• 45:24
Speaker 3: talk and again that's not directly that amazed anybody, but
• 45:27
Speaker 3: coach talk says, yeah, he's gonna be able to compete,
• 45:30
Speaker 3: and we're not saying all the other stuff. Coach talk
• 45:33
Speaker 3: is going to say, hey, he's gonna be able to compete.
• 45:35
Speaker 3: We'll figure it out. Everybody's gonna compete. Yeah, that's what
• 45:38
Speaker 3: coach talks. Yes, and when when when it? Let me
• 45:41
Speaker 3: just give you a hint. If a coach tells you
• 45:44
Speaker 3: that we're gonna we're gonna go out there and we're
• 45:47
Speaker 3: gonna compete, and the best player is gonna play.
• 45:49
Speaker 4: Your son's got in this ship or your daughter's got it, believe.
• 45:52
Speaker 3: But I just think, like I said, I just think overall,
• 45:55
Speaker 3: when you talk about coaching in this time and area,
• 45:58
Speaker 3: coaching is very, very difficult. And if you're not willing to,
• 46:02
Speaker 3: like I said, if you're not willing to learn what's
• 46:05
Speaker 3: new far as you know, techniques and new office, new defense,
• 46:09
Speaker 3: if you're not willing to adjust to the new psychology
• 46:12
Speaker 3: that you have to have coaching, Like I said, parents,
• 46:16
Speaker 3: players and men, everybody, you just you can't. It's no
• 46:20
Speaker 3: way you can be successful in this era. And I
• 46:22
Speaker 3: think that's probably a reason. Even if you look like
• 46:24
Speaker 3: a Dion, he's been successful because he understands the psychology
• 46:27
Speaker 3: of kids. But he's but he can't cross the line
• 46:30
Speaker 3: to the NFL because he knows it's a different world.
• 46:33
  Speaker 4: It's a different world, and I wouldn't be able to
• 46:34
Speaker 4: do what I do here. Okay, go ahead, Lisa, Oh.
• 46:36
Speaker 8: No, I was just I was just gonna throw this
• 46:38
Speaker 8: out there for conversation. Do you think Hurricane was aware
• 46:41
Speaker 8: that this was a possibility. Do you think it was
• 46:43
Speaker 8: something that he just when he realized the other coach
• 46:46
Speaker 8: stepped down, was he unhappy there? I mean, there's just
• 46:49
Speaker 8: so many questions I have, Like he you know, he's
• 46:52
Speaker 8: going from a program that's pretty well established to a challenge.
• 46:56
Speaker 8: Really and I'm just wondering, you know, what kind of
• 47:00
Speaker 8: thoughts were going through his head when he decided to
• 47:03
  Speaker 8: make this move.
• 47:05
Speaker 3: The heart I think I think the the his objective is.
• 47:11
Speaker 4: To prove that he can do it.
• 47:15
Speaker 3: He can do it. I think that's yes. I think
• 47:18
Speaker 3: he feels like he can do he can do it.
• 47:20
Speaker 3: He thinks that he can turn that program around and
• 47:23
  Speaker 3: and again.
• 47:24
Speaker 6: And he does have deep roots there.
• 47:25
Speaker 7: He was there a lot.
• 47:27
Speaker 4: I think that's the part. I think his his roots
• 47:29
Speaker 4: are there. He loves it.
• 47:31
Speaker 3: And I think we've seen this with he called Coach Carpenter.
• 47:34
Speaker 3: We've seen with Coach Carpenter coming back to Capitol. We
• 47:36
Speaker 3: seen with the I think Walker he was at Concord,
• 47:40
Speaker 3: he went back to Martinsburg. So I think if you're
• 47:42
Speaker 3: part and gratiated into a community, you love that community,
• 47:45
  Speaker 3: you love.
• 47:46
  Speaker 4: The kids there.
• 47:47
Speaker 3: He thought maybe the grass is greener, but maybe he's not.
• 47:50
Speaker 3: You want to come back, So.
• 47:53
Speaker 7: Could be many things.
• 47:56
  Speaker 4: I just I'm just for me, I'm just I'm just
• 48:01
  Speaker 4: confused with it.
• 48:02
  Speaker 3: That's that, That's really I mean, I can't really go
• 48:06
Speaker 3: any further into it, but I'm just confused with it
• 48:09
Speaker 3: because to me, I think that there were there were
• 48:12
Speaker 3: people who were really bothered by you know, him leaving.
• 48:19
Speaker 3: And the question for me is are they happy when
• 48:22
Speaker 3: from coming back or some mad because you know.
• 48:27
Speaker 4: You've got, you know, all of a sudden, my kids again.
• 48:32
  Speaker 7: Any other move.
• 48:33
Speaker 4: But I think people want to win.
• 48:35
Speaker 3: You go on thirty, want to winter?
• 48:43
Speaker 4: How important would it be for your kid to play?
• 48:46
Speaker 4: Are you? Babe? So you want what you want to
• 48:49
Speaker 4: win and you want your kid to play.
• 48:52
Speaker 3: It depends on what I'm saying, and I hear you
• 48:54
Speaker 3: when you say that, but it depends on where my
• 48:57
Speaker 3: kid is. If my kid has no aspiration going to college,
• 49:01
Speaker 3: we didn't, we ain't going to We ain't thinking about that.
• 49:03
Speaker 3: He just playing high school football and then after that
• 49:05
Speaker 3: it's over. I want you to be on a playoff team.
• 49:08
Speaker 3: I want you to experience win. I want you to
• 49:10
Speaker 3: have fun. I want you to have those high school memories.
• 49:12
Speaker 3: So when y'all you get back with your boys. You
• 49:14
Speaker 3: can talk about the playoff games and y'all had this
• 49:16
Speaker 3: big win and da da da da dah. Now, again,
• 49:18
Speaker 3: if my kid is a is going to be a
• 49:21
Speaker 3: collegiate athlete, he's he's he's going in that direction, then
• 49:25
Speaker 3: there's a different thought process and conversation. Again, the wins
• 49:29
Speaker 3: don't necessarily mean that he's going to go further or
• 49:31
Speaker 3: anything like that. But are you going to put my
• 49:34
Speaker 3: kid in the position where you're going to play and
• 49:36
Speaker 3: get the best out of them so I can get
• 49:38
Speaker 3: recruits and get tapes and we can go to the
• 49:39
  Speaker 3: next level.
• 49:40
Speaker 4: So it depends on where your kids at. Well, okay,
• 49:45
Speaker 4: and it could be a.
• 49:46
Speaker 8: Good thing if your kids exposed to the challenges and
• 49:50
Speaker 8: having to compete for a position, because they're going to
• 49:53
Speaker 8: have to do it at the collegiate level anyway.
• 49:54
Speaker 3: If they have those yes, because a lot of NFL
• 49:58
Speaker 3: players they didn't. They didn't in high school. Now that's
• 50:00
Speaker 3: not everybody's story. But if you're just a regular dude, man,
• 50:04
Speaker 3: I want to win. If I'm just a regular dude
• 50:06
Speaker 3: and this ain't going no further, and okay, so I'm
• 50:10
Speaker 3: gonna as much as I criticize you on on on
• 50:15
Speaker 3: the on the realization of my goals. I'll give you this,
• 50:22
Speaker 3: I'm not willing. I'm not willing won I'm not willing
• 50:26
Speaker 3: to let anybody get my job.
• 50:27
Speaker 4: Like you know, my my coach, your recon.
• 50:35
Speaker 3: So so in my mind, I'm I'm not thinking you know,
• 50:39
Speaker 3: and and and my dad, my dad is not you know,
• 50:42
Speaker 3: if I'm not playing, my dad is saying it's me.
• 50:45
Speaker 3: He ain't saying it's the coach. He ain't talking about
• 50:48
Speaker 3: the coach. My dad is going to say, you.
• 50:50
  Speaker 4: Know, because.
• 50:54
Speaker 3: Different back when it was that, back when Daddy ball
• 50:58
Speaker 3: was at its best, there was a gentleman who was
• 51:01
Speaker 3: playing for me. Dad was a booster at the high school.
• 51:04
Speaker 3: He makes he makes varsity. I don't make varsity, right,
• 51:09
Speaker 3: So what Dad knew was in order to play, you
• 51:13
  Speaker 3: gotta make varsity.
• 51:14
Speaker 4: So you gotta make varsity.
• 51:16
Speaker 3: Then once you make varsity, you gotta get in the lineup,
• 51:18
Speaker 3: especially if you think I'm coming to a game, right.
• 51:22
Speaker 3: I tried to explain to him, like, you know, you know,
• 51:25
Speaker 3: we didn't have no term like Daddy brought back then.
• 51:27
Speaker 3: I'm like Dad, his dad is a booster. That's why
• 51:31
Speaker 3: he made the team, and Dad said, well, I can
• 51:33
Speaker 3: guarantee you this if you outplay him that much, I
• 51:37
Speaker 3: don't think the coach will care how much money he
• 51:39
  Speaker 3: gives him.
• 51:40
Speaker 4: He gonna keep you on the team instead of him.
• 51:43
Speaker 3: Fact And in my mind, in my mind, that's how
• 51:45
Speaker 3: I functioned the whole entire time, Like I just got
• 51:49
Speaker 3: to outplay, out work before I can outplay.
• 51:53
Speaker 4: I got out work you, and then I can outplay you,
• 51:56
Speaker 4: so now I can get in issue though is and and.
• 52:03
Speaker 3: Just to put a pin in that right quick, that
• 52:05
Speaker 3: conversation that you just had with yourself and your father
• 52:10
Speaker 3: is not happening exactly the level.
• 52:13
Speaker 4: No more people are not having that conversation.
• 52:16
Speaker 3: That's a totally different conversation than what even if elite
• 52:20
  Speaker 3: athletes are getting.
• 52:22
Speaker 4: So what I'm trying to say is that.
• 52:25
Speaker 3: A kid is just not coming to the field with
• 52:27
Speaker 3: that sort of mindset in that conversation from the top
• 52:30
Speaker 3: and the top is mom and Dad right, They're not
• 52:32
Speaker 3: coming with that because again, think about what you just said.
• 52:35
Speaker 3: Your dad ain't say our plane, your dad set out working.
• 52:38
Speaker 3: That's a foundational route matter that starts before you even
• 52:42
Speaker 3: strap up the chin, strapping the helmet and put going
• 52:44
Speaker 3: on the field. And a lot of kids, I would
• 52:47
Speaker 3: say most kids, at least, unless they have it in them,
• 52:51
Speaker 3: they're not getting that conversation. Bro, I'm I'm up and
• 52:56
Speaker 3: home before dad leaves to go to work, just so
• 53:00
Speaker 3: he knows I was out the rug.
• 53:01
  Speaker 4: That's what I'm say. That's the thing.
• 53:04
Speaker 8: And again, you had some natural, God given gifts, but
• 53:07
Speaker 8: then after that you had to you had to work
• 53:09
  Speaker 8: to develop that.
• 53:10
Speaker 3: Absolutely, you had somebody telling you that. Yes, you had
• 53:13
Speaker 3: somebody saying like, this is what you're doing. And it
• 53:16
Speaker 3: was an ex it was actually an expectation. He really
• 53:20
Speaker 3: say get up, Like he wasn't waking me up. He
• 53:23
Speaker 3: wasn't going to ask me. He wasn't going to ask
• 53:26
Speaker 3: me why you didn't run to day. He wasn't none
• 53:28
  Speaker 3: of that.
• 53:30
Speaker 4: But what we knew was where the gold was. And
• 53:33
  Speaker 4: that's what I'm saying.
• 53:33
Speaker 3: And when you look at particularly when you're talking about followers,
• 53:37
Speaker 3: when you look at Richard Williams, we look at LeVar
• 53:39
Speaker 3: Ball when it's just not a mystery why their kids
• 53:43
Speaker 3: are professional athletes and made it that far.
• 53:45
Speaker 4: It ain't no mystery.
• 53:47
Speaker 3: And what I'm just trying to say because they had
• 53:48
Speaker 3: an expectation and they had a look look at yourself
• 53:52
Speaker 3: first before you turn your eyes to anything else, and
• 53:55
Speaker 3: deal with you first, and didn't.
• 53:56
Speaker 4: Go out there right. And I'm just saying I was
• 53:59
Speaker 4: thinking of Tiger Yeah, Tiger Woods. So parents, a lot
• 54:02
Speaker 4: of parents just ain't doing that. They're looking at the coach.
• 54:05
Speaker 3: They're looking at the facility system, the offense, the defense,
• 54:08
Speaker 3: the coach. But so what I'm just saying is a
• 54:11
Speaker 3: coach now. And that's why I'm putting it on the
• 54:14
Speaker 3: coach man. You got it, man, It's it's just I
• 54:17
Speaker 3: don't see how anybody would coach now. It's just such
• 54:20
Speaker 3: a hard job and you gotta get ready for everything.
• 54:25
Speaker 3: You gotta be prepared for that. So you may have
• 54:27
Speaker 3: to be as a coach.
• 54:28
Speaker 4: I may have to give you the daddy's speech, and
• 54:32
Speaker 4: if you not prepared to do that as a coach,
• 54:34
  Speaker 4: you can't coach.
• 54:34
Speaker 8: In this comment, can you imagine like coaches from back
• 54:37
Speaker 8: in the day dealing with the transfer portal today, I
• 54:41
Speaker 8: mean some of those coaches would have they wouldn't have
• 54:43
Speaker 8: said a chance, Yeah, I mean it wouldn't have happened.
• 54:47
Speaker 8: It just its just and some of probably some of
• 54:50
Speaker 8: the greatest coaches of all time may not have been
• 54:53
  Speaker 8: in this atmosphere.
• 54:54
Speaker 7: You think about that, for thought, I.
• 55:01
Speaker 3: Could probably, I could probably take this another half hour easy,
• 55:06
Speaker 3: but we've got to go. So ladies and gentlemen, we
• 55:09
Speaker 3: appreciate you listening, and we will be back again next week.
