- 0:03If I could go back 15 years and hand myself a CHEAT SHEET for
- 0:06starting Parkinson's medication, wow, would I have saved me a lot
- 0:09of frustration and maybe a few awkward dinners.
- 0:13Well, today I'm sharing the five things that I wish I'd known
- 0:15before taking my first dose. The things that people only
- 0:18learn the hard way and stick around to the end for today's
- 0:21prices. Because it's one that I wish
- 0:23someone had told me the day that I first swallowed my first pill.

- 1:07We are changing the way that people think about Parkinson's
- 1:10and people live with Parkinson's.
- 1:12So today is a program that I'm passionate about. 5 things I
- 1:17wish that I'd known before I started taking my Parkinson's
- 1:20medication. So let's get right into it.
- 1:22Here is a number one number one thing that someone I wish I
- 1:27would have known was this. That timing is everything.
- 1:30When I first started, I thought just take it when you remember
- 1:33wrong. Parkinson's meds work best on a
- 1:35schedule, and protein can interfere with that absorption.
- 1:39OK, so as I say, always say this, meds on time every time.
- 1:45I know I preach it, but it's so important.
- 1:47It's so important. It's not just something you just
- 1:49fluff by and get by. If you take it and it's your, I
- 1:53take mine every three hours. So if it's every three hours, I
- 1:56try to hit it on the nose. I don't try to say I'll get it
- 1:59in a minute, I'll get it after this.
- 2:01Take your meds on time every time.
- 2:03And here's a specific tip that I wish I had ready and you can
- 2:07talk to your doctor about this. Take your meds 30 to 60 minutes
- 2:12before protein, or wait about two hours after eating it and
- 2:16then take them. See, I learned the hard way
- 2:20after eating a massive steak dinner and wondering why my meds
- 2:22seem to vanish. Spoiler alert, the protein was
- 2:26blocking them. So I want to be really clear
- 2:28about this. I'm not a doctor.
- 2:31I have some. I'm someone who's lived with
- 2:32Parkinson's for 15 years. So I always check with my doctor
- 2:36before I'd make a change or, or we talk about if I can or what I
- 2:40should do and what strategies are working and what things that
- 2:43we should implement. OK, but I don't plan my meals
- 2:48around my meds. I just don't.
- 2:51If I know I'm going to be eating a heavy protein meal, I take an
- 2:54extra pill my my last dose or half an hour or an hour after,
- 2:57whatever it might be. I work that with my doctor and
- 3:00we work that through. I think it's one of the most
- 3:03frustrating things to try to and frustrating hard and almost
- 3:06impossible depending on your schedule to work food around
- 3:10around your meds. It's much easier the other way
- 3:13around. Doctor, doctor, fix it, change
- 3:15it. I promise you it's life changer.
- 3:17It will change your life. It really will.
- 3:20All right, here is here's number 2.
- 3:25Side effects can be sneaky. I wish I would have told.
- 3:28I wish someone would have told me about these silly side
- 3:30effects that, that, that were so sneaky.
- 3:32You know, they don't always show up with the like a warning
- 3:35label, you know, says sometimes it's subtle, a shift in mood,
- 3:38changes in sleep or even behavior.
- 3:41Now, for me, it started with these weird vivid dreams and
- 3:45I'll admit, a little more impulse shopping than usual,
- 3:48right? But here's the bottom line.
- 3:51If something feels off, don't wait until your next
- 3:53appointment. Call your doctor and talk about
- 3:56it. You know, where I'm from in
- 3:58Canada, we see normally our neurologist or movement disorder
- 4:01specialist once every six months.
- 4:04I've heard in the, you know, in the inner circle and other
- 4:06places of summers every three months, some just nine months.
- 4:09It's whatever it might be that if something's going on with
- 4:13you, don't wait, you know, five months or six months, four
- 4:17months. You phone your doctor, may
- 4:19they'll see you, they'll make an appointment or send them an
- 4:22e-mail. However it might be.
- 4:24And if you're just getting diagnosed or if you're just
- 4:27seeing these doctors, make sure on your appointment, say in
- 4:30between appointments, if something's not right and
- 4:32something feels off, what is the best way to get in touch with
- 4:35you? Is it e-mail?
- 4:37Is it calling the office? Please let me know and confirm
- 4:40that with them, OK? And my is no.
- 4:43And and don't think you're you're gonna be a burden on your
- 4:46doctor, OK? You're not.
- 4:48As a matter of fact, my doctor, my movement sort of specialist.
- 4:52God bless him. He is always telling me why
- 4:55haven't I talked to you for six months?
- 4:56Like is everything? So I assume everything's OK.
- 4:59In other words, he's saying if something's not right, if
- 5:02something's not going away, to make sure they call.
- 5:04Be happy. Your own advocate.
- 5:05I'm telling you, you cannot sit back and wait with Parkinson's
- 5:08'cause you know what? Did anybody ever tell you it's a
- 5:11progressive disease, So sit back and wait.
- 5:13For what? For it to progress.
- 5:15Do it, fix it, change it now. OK.
- 5:19And if that's you and that's out there, you know, tell me in the
- 5:21comments have do you, do you talk to your doctor in between
- 5:24appointments? Do you phone him?
- 5:25What's how do you communicate with him?
- 5:27Or maybe you've never done it. Let me know in the let's start a
- 5:30conversation in the comments. I read and reply to every single
- 5:33one. So please let me know is this
- 5:35new or do you do this as well? OK, now here's the third thing.
- 5:40OK, the third thing is this, the doses change over time, right?
- 5:47When I first got diagnosed. Hey, let's start with this pill.
- 5:49Let's start with that pill. We know. 11 pill every four
- 5:52hours. Well, listen, your dose will
- 5:55change, and that's not failure. OK, Early on, I thought more
- 6:00pills meant I was losing ground, right?
- 6:03Oh, no, I can't take more. That means I'm falling, I'm
- 6:05slipping. It's going faster.
- 6:07The reality, your doctors fine tuning your treatment to keep
- 6:10you moving and feeling as good as possible.
- 6:12Remember that they're fine tuning it to make it you feel as
- 6:16good as possible, OK? It doesn't mean you're losing.
- 6:19Doesn't mean it's defeat. Oh, my God.
- 6:21I had to add another pill. I had to increase my dose.
- 6:24Oh, boy, I don't want to deal with that.
- 6:26Hell yeah, you do. It's better than deal with all
- 6:28these off times, right? So get in there and get going
- 6:30with that. Right.
- 6:32And here's the thing that you can remember.
- 6:34Parkinson's is progressive. That means your Med schedule.
- 6:38That means it's going to continually get, you know,
- 6:40worse, worse, worse, you know, and that means that as that
- 6:44progresses, your meds were going to progress as well.
- 6:47It's going to be a continual. Don't ever think it's a one stop
- 6:50stop shop for all your meds. All right, we're going to move
- 6:54on. Oh, before I move on to #4 don't
- 6:55forget about this pricism. Stay tuned.
- 6:58Do it because it's at the end here that you're really going to
- 7:00like it. I know you are.
- 7:01All right #4 communication is key.
- 7:05OK. I schedule a check in every
- 7:08three to six months, even if I feel steady.
- 7:12OK, it's not about senior doctor only when things are bad.
- 7:15It's about keeping them in the loop so they can just adjust
- 7:18before the problems start. Bring your notes, track your
- 7:20symptoms and speak up. Now, I know I kind of stepped on
- 7:24this one already. OK, I know I already stepped on
- 7:27it, but now what I'm going to tell you is I've got into a
- 7:29rhythm. So now I call my doctor every
- 7:32three months. So I six months, halfway in
- 7:34between, I just do a quick check in.
- 7:36Hey, here's where I'm at. Here's some things that are
- 7:37going on, some things I'm thinking about.
- 7:40Even if it's OK, even if things have been really well, I check
- 7:43in. Hey, doctor, you know, hey, doc,
- 7:44I don't want to say, but hey, doctor, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 7:47You know, hey, things are going really well with me.
- 7:49You know, here's what I've been thinking about.
- 7:51You know, if it's no big deal, I'll see you in a couple months.
- 7:53And if it is, you know, reach out to me.
- 7:56So that's an intentional check in.
- 7:59And I had to do that because I'm probably like you, I'm not the
- 8:03first one that's going to be trying to, you know, bug the
- 8:05doctor. But anyway, so that's for me to
- 8:08you, and it's a good one. So here is number 5.
- 8:13This is the fifth thing I wish someone would have told me
- 8:16before I started taking the medication.
- 8:20And that's this, that starting meds isn't just physical, it's
- 8:24also mental. You know, for me, accepting that
- 8:27I needed medication everyday felt like a defeat at first.
- 8:31Now I see it as a tool that gives me more control of my life
- 8:34and not less. You know, I wasn't, I, I barely
- 8:38took any medication before Parkinson's.
- 8:41So I'm not, I was not used to taking, I wasn't used to taking
- 8:45one pill a month, let alone, you know, 30-40 a day.
- 8:49OK, so that takes a mental toll, but accept it, right?
- 8:55Just accept that I need it. It's not defeat.
- 8:57It's just a tool to make my life better.
- 9:00OK. And in just a moment, I'll give
- 9:02you that Brycism that sums up everything that I've that I've
- 9:04learned about meds in one line. All right, so let's recap this
- 9:08quickly. 5 things #1 timing is everything.
- 9:11Number two, side effects could be sneaky #3 doses change, and
- 9:16that's OK. Four, communications key #5 the
- 9:20mental adjustment matters. All right, here's your Brycism
- 9:24for the day. With Parkinson's meds, you're
- 9:27not chasing perfection. You're chasing balance, and some
- 9:30days balance means accepting the wobble.
- 9:35There you go. Now it's your turn.
- 9:37What's one thing you wish you'd known before you started your
- 9:39Parkinson's medication? Drop in the comments.
