Latest / Guy Football Focus with Guy Haberman / Nick Bosa Injury Leaves Only One Clear Choice For 49ers
Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_03]: What's up guys, guys?
- 0:00[SPEAKER_03]: Guys, there's an insane question being asked right now, which is if Nick Bosa is going to miss extended time, do you still quote unquote go for it if you're the 49ers?
- 0:10[SPEAKER_03]: And the reason I think it's insane is for two reasons, number one, when your quarterback looks this good, you're always going for it.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_03]: So the way Brock pretty's playing,
- 0:21[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see, it's only been two games, but the way he looks, if you've got the type of quarterback that the quarterback looks like this, which is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, then you're never not going for it.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_03]: So that's number one, number two.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_03]: What, when Nick boasts the retires, you just never go in for it again?
- 0:38[SPEAKER_03]: What are the odds you're ever going to get?
- 0:40[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you have to be pretty bad most times to get a past pressure as good as Nick boasts or you've got to make a crazy trade, which is not as good to them before, or a big time signing, which is hard when it comes to edge rushers, because when do you let guys in their prime walk or when they're young walk, they leave when they're like 30?
- 0:59[SPEAKER_03]: but not their whole career drafted somewhere else and then end up on your team.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_03]: So it's really hard to be clear.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_03]: Losing Nick Bosa for any period of time is bad.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_03]: But there's not really an alternative in my mind to are you going forward to de-a-pack it in?
- 1:18[SPEAKER_03]: Bosa's hurt, how long?
- 1:19[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know, we'll find out, maybe.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_03]: Kyle will talk today.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_03]: Well, if it's gonna be a while, then just screw it, get ready for next season.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_03]: That's sorry, that's not how it works and it's definitely not how it works with this team and it's not how it works.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_03]: When your quarterback looks this good, I think they need a defensive line help.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, definitely need more defensive line help.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_03]: Now, it emphasizes how good Kyle's gonna have to be, how good Brock's gonna have to be.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_03]: Hopefully, other guys defensively blob all this stuff for him, but
- 1:52[SPEAKER_03]: You don't pack it.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_03]: Did anyone say that about the Rams this year?
- 1:54[SPEAKER_03]: Miles Garrick got hurt.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I don't know they got her in Donald, but he just, there's just not enough.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_03]: There's, there's not a decision to make.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_03]: That's the point I'm making.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_03]: There's not a decision to make.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_03]: There is only one way.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_03]: And it's, and now like last year was different because it piled up.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_03]: But.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_03]: There's no decision to make here, and hopefully Nick is back soon, sooner rather than later.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_03]: The last time he's played a full season, that was 2023.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_03]: So if you're only going to go for it, quote, unquote, years when both plays a whole year, well, then maybe you missed your moment.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_03]: Now, I mean, coincidentally, some of you are going to point out, they went to the Super Bowl in 2023, I know, I know.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_03]: but you just can't, you don't get the decision to make.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_03]: There's just only go for it.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_03]: Now if you're developing a young quarterback and like that's different, that's different.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_03]: And so I wanna talk about a guy that I've been asked a lot about, which is the Forrest Buckner, specifically the Forrest Buckner.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_03]: And there's other potential edge rushers out there.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_03]: You know, right now at this point you go like, who's not great, maybe Jackson Dark got hurt for the year,
- 3:09[SPEAKER_03]: I don't I don't I don't love it, but you know, at this point there might not be a lot to love I'm they'd love to have Max Crosby, but the writers are good right now and they wouldn't love to trade Max Crosby to the 49ers of all places I don't think Mark Davis would love that
- 3:26[SPEAKER_03]: So, DeForce Bruttener, it makes a lot of sense to ask about him because the culture kind of in the perfect so I'm right now, they're owing to Chris Ballard, the general managers on the last year of his contract.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_03]: So whatever happens in their future is going to be determined very soon their owner is wearing headphones and taking notes on the sidelines.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_03]: That is an indication that they may be in the market.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_03]: to start over.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_03]: That's crazy.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_03]: A situation to be in, and it's not usually the situation you're in when you're really competing for a championship.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_03]: So that's the situation they're in.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_03]: And this week they played the Texans and the Texans are desperate.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_03]: They're old and too.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_03]: Tennessee's old and too.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_03]: The AFC South has won win and it's the Jags at one in one.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_03]: So whoever loses this game, that division is not out of reach, especially if Jacksonville were to lose.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_03]: They play the Patriots this week.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_03]: but being all in three in your division I don't know what the percentage of playoff makes is or being all in three and you know falling to all in three with a loss in your division I don't know what the percentage is that you make the playoffs in that scenario but
- 4:38[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it would not be, it would not be good.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_03]: This would be the first divisional loss that just to clean that point up.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_03]: So what's the deal with the Forest Buckner?
- 4:45[SPEAKER_03]: Well, the still beloved in Indianapolis, digging around in India, we dug around in Buffalo the other day.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_03]: We're digging around in India today.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_03]: It would be a massive blow to the cults to lose him.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_03]: The numbers on that defense when he comes off the field.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_03]: when they rotate them off the field and he's on a lot, you know, he plays predominantly passing downs.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_03]: They don't have the interior to really fill his void.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_03]: I know if you go look at the PFF run grade for him.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_03]: It is a bismal.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of the worst in the league.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_03]: Mostly from week one.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_03]: But last year his run grade took a big hit too.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_03]: It feels a little early for me to be quoting run grades two weeks in PFF.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_03]: It's, you know, I think at this point it's probably
- 5:30[SPEAKER_03]: watch the tape, but you know, even if you go last year when he only played 10 games,
- 5:36[SPEAKER_03]: whatever you want to say about the grades like the grades are the grades year to year to year and his grade was significantly lower last year.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_03]: He's on the leadership council there.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_03]: They got four banners outside of Lucas oil stadium, players hanging on, you know, they got the banner, the big picture.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_03]: But he's one of them.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_03]: It's like all the stuff that the Niners miss about him are the reasons the cults would maybe be hesitant to trade him.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_03]: But I think in the reality of the now.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_03]: I think the culture would be crazy not to trade to force Buckner now.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_03]: We're not talking about the value yet like to me It's got could you get them for a fourth round pick that might sound crazy?
- 6:12[SPEAKER_03]: You but let's just talk this out for a second.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_03]: He's gonna be a free agent at the end of the year.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_03]: He's 32 years old and most significantly I don't I
- 6:22[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe you're going to recite him, but you don't know if you're the cults, if he's going to play next year.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_03]: The cults have given up over 1,000 yards in the first two weeks of the season, and there is risk in acquiring him, and this is why I think the cults, ultimately, if they continue to lose, should trade him and will trade him as much as they love him.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_03]: He missed the latter part of last season with the neck injury, and he admittedly contemplated
- 6:52[SPEAKER_03]: And that, to me, is the key if you're in detailapolis.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_03]: If you're thinking you may reset, it's hard to duplicate the leadership of the Forrest Buckner.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_03]: Like you don't want that guy in your locker room during a reset, especially he's not gonna be as expensive next year.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_03]: You could always bring him back, I guess, but you don't know if he's gonna play next year.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_03]: So a team taking him on is getting
- 7:16[SPEAKER_03]: You know, a three technique, as we say, in his 30s, coming off a major injury, that almost forced him out of the league already.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_03]: Now the counter would be
- 7:30[SPEAKER_03]: You had a better option.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_03]: If you're the 49ers, like you don't just, like, oh, we want the Forest Fuckner, but we also want K-VonTibodol, let's just say, or Doran Payne from the Washington Commanders, who we talked about the other day, it could be available and useful interior.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_03]: You know, the forest can move a little, the 90s, like that, and the 90s need.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_03]: probably at this point more than one guy.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_03]: Now they are going to get my Cow Williams back.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_03]: Hopefully that'll be a big story next week.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_03]: Is he practicing as he could to return after four weeks on IR?
- 7:59[SPEAKER_03]: You hope so.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_03]: But you know, I think I think it's worth addressing Deforespuckner.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_03]: up first and I think he makes sense and part of the reason is he's not the only move and I don't think it should be that expensive like I don't that's this is not a third round pick in my mind for DeForce Buckner given the scenario that that I just laid out and it may be that the cults are are very very willing participants.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_03]: I mean if they're all in three I think they should be before I get to the latest big comments about Brock Perti, I thank you to my sponsors.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_03]: If you are going back to Levi Stadium this weekend you got to go see
- 8:33[SPEAKER_03]: Westo, Mexicana, Moderna, section 1116.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_03]: That's where you can buy.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_03]: Westo, it is the best food you can eat in the stadium.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_03]: It is one of my favorite restaurants.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_03]: Period, the Adler Brothers, huge nother fans, and supporters of the show.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_03]: You can get tacos or not chose there or both.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_03]: And your option of meat.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_03]: either the Chicken Verde or the short rib barbecue, which is a Levi-Stayton exclusive and I think it's fantastic and thank you to Volvo Cars Marin, Matt Gordon and his team put me and my family in a great plug-in hybrid XC90, we are loving it, it's fantastic in every way.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_03]: If you are looking for a new or you used Volvo, go see the team at Volvo Cars Marin.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_03]: Now, go back to the original point on Brock, Perti, you're always going for it when you quarterback's good, and in this prime, right?
- 9:20[SPEAKER_03]: Like, that's part of the job now as you elevate your team.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_03]: You've got to score more points than you've got to score more points.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_03]: But Dale Jeremiah,
- 9:28[SPEAKER_03]: move the sticks and I think DJ texting with him Thursday.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_03]: We're targeting next week to have DJ back on the show.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_03]: He took his podcast to Omaha and Omaha the network, not the place, and he
- 9:46[SPEAKER_03]: is on YouTube now.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_03]: So go subscribe to his channel.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_03]: He talked about Brock Perti.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_03]: Here's what he and Dan Arlovsky had to say about Brock.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_02]: After watching Perti's tape, I said, people can debate, you know, how he ranks and how he stacks, but to me, through two weeks, no one gets from one to three as fast as Brock Perti.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_02]: His eyes are so fast right now, how fast he's seeing everything.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: He gets
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: and kind of so in control here.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: Quiet.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, quietly.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how we does that.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: I've been around some guys like that maybe, you know, Peyton was like that, but Peyton was also very like, little frenetic.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, and that's kind of how he just got through things where Brock will can just get through things.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost like this low physically.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: But happening so quickly.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next level is the throw that is being made to that second or third or fourth.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like these guys are just screaming while open.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, cows getting them open don't get me wrong.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: But he's thrown it over a linebacker.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there's a clip, second quarter, eight, twenty seven where he gets to like a third or fourth thing.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just the type of throw that is needed to go almost like in between and over.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't do it on air.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: And so yeah, it's a very impressive kind of way that he is just very cool right now with everything that he's going about.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_03]: All right, there's DJ and Orlovsky.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_03]: And again, go check out Daniel's channel on YouTube and subscribe to it.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_03]: I think a few things going on.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_03]: There's been a lot of this like wire people suddenly talking about Brock.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I haven't you guys noticed.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's already, look, I've said this for a while now.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_03]: It's just it's really hard to win like you can win little arguments, but when we're having big arguments like every like quarterback arguments everybody's and I'm quarterback arguments it is at the end of the day about how it looks like if we're going to talk about greatness and we're going to about oh he's going to third round pick or second round pick or I think he saw if we're going to talk about I think you're great or I think you're tier one or tier two I think you're will elite one of the best
- 11:58[SPEAKER_03]: It's not going to be about efficiency stats.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm okay with that, we got to see it, right?
- 12:04[SPEAKER_03]: No debate about my homes or Josh Allen or Burrow or Stafford.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_03]: Like, nobody, you don't talk about efficiency stats.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_03]: You go, you know, I watch some big games.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_03]: Dude, look pretty good.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_03]: You just, yeah, throw you mate.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_03]: Do you see that time you elevated this team?
- 12:18[SPEAKER_03]: Do you see that time me?
- 12:20[SPEAKER_03]: That's all, that's, and you know what?
- 12:22[SPEAKER_03]: When it comes to elite,
- 12:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's fine, it's good, it's usually right, you know?
- 12:30[SPEAKER_03]: And I think one thing, like if you're looking for like the Y is the Brock discussion.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_03]: Well, he played on a standalone, I think standalone, quote unquote, I guess all out of Felgen, international televised, well, they're not actually many of them original.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_03]: You play a nationally televised game.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_03]: stand alone, season opener, toe to toe with the Rams.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_03]: You against Stafford.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_03]: You on the same field of Stafford, you look as good as he is.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's how you jump start a conversation.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_03]: So I think that's that's one thing is he had this big game.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_03]: There are games that just stick and it takes time to get over him.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_03]: The Ravens game a few years ago, where he threw was a four-interceptions, five-interceptions against Mike McDonald's defense on Monday Night Football, Sunday Night and Monday Night, I think it was Monday Night.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_03]: That stuck, and then you got to work past it, and then the Seahawks game last year, it sticks right, national televised.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_03]: like it's not that complicated and you may hate it, you may like it's just why does people think that's from what?
- 13:32[SPEAKER_03]: Why do you think that's from what was good?
- 13:34[SPEAKER_03]: Cause you've watched that's from a home to like, oh my god, look at that guy.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_03]: Not because somebody made some argument to you with the stats, you don't need only even look at the stats.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_03]: Like, oh, I mean, maybe the stats like, oh 42 touchdowns, that's a lot.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_03]: So like, I think that's part of what's happening with Brock.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_03]: And then the other thing that's happening, and it was part of what these guys talked about in the second half of the clip like the way he looks, I do think and I've been saying this since training camp.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_03]: I think he is.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_03]: If I say, like, where's he taking a step?
- 14:02[SPEAKER_03]: I think all of his movement just looks so intentional.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_03]: He made a comment procted on Thursday and his meaty availability and Eric branch followed up on it.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_03]: Brock said something about making a violent throw.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_03]: He was talking about the throw.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_03]: We've all been talking about the throw to Mike Evans at the pile on the other day in front of the pile on the other day.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_03]: And Brock said I just need to make a violent throw and Eric branch.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_03]: asked him what do you mean by a violent throw even though you know what he means but it's like oh this is interesting let's hear him articulated and he talked about commitment right it's about a throw that I am fully committed to and I thought it was such a great description I think everything you see pretty doing right now
- 14:43[SPEAKER_03]: The way he moves, it's so tight.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_03]: When I say tight, I mean like the way your car feels when you've got a full take of gas and the tire pressure is just right and you just got the wheels aligned and you are just, you know, it just feels exactly, though it's doing exactly what you wanted to do.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_03]: It feels exactly right.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_03]: There's no wobble, there's no drift.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's weird how your car just feels more sturdy with a full tank of gas.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_03]: I guess there's a weight issue to it, but don't just feel better.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_03]: You got that.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_03]: You're like, I mean, now you don't feel better because it's just spent $90 to fill up your tank, maybe if you're lucky.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_03]: But if you're putting an 89, but like that's how party looks to me and he looked like that in training camp and it's translated the regular season.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_03]: I keep saying it.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't begrudge anybody who's like, oh, now, I think he looks better than I thought before I didn't look, but now I think he looks like, that's fine.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_03]: I think he looks better, he looks really good.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_03]: You know, so I just, I thought that was interesting from Daniel Jeremiah and Dan Orlovsky.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_03]: And I thought it was good, that, I thought was good analysis.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_03]: You know, they say he's playing, he looks like he's playing like one of the best, best quarterbacks in the league.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_03]: I said receivers because I was thinking about Jordan Walkins.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_03]: I think that Clay Kubi at the offensive court and had an interesting comment on Thursday.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_03]: He was asked, you know, Jordan Walkins opportunity.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_03]: And he said, it probably will get an opportunity this week.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_03]: Brandon cooks, you know, unlikely that he'll play in this game.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_03]: And he's got to make the most of his opportunity.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_03]: It's basically what he said.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_03]: He didn't say like, oh, Jordan has been killing it.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_03]: Unlucky for him that other guys have been in front of them.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_03]: No.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_03]: This kind of feels like a make it or break it week for Jordan Watkins, and he's still going to be in a tough spot because as I've told you this week, I think Brandon cooks it's coming.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_03]: I think Brandon cooks is on the way, it's a matter of time, and, um,
- 16:42[SPEAKER_03]: you know somebody else can get her I guess this week and then you have them both on the active roster but it's a big week for Jordan Watkins.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_03]: It's a it's a big week for Jordan Watkins.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_03]: Part of the reason Brock is playing so well of course is the offensive line has been great.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_03]: I talk to Dominic Pune as part of recording an interview
- 17:00[SPEAKER_03]: for the pre-game show, the radio pre-game show, and the 49ers radio network on Sunday, that full interview will air before kickoff in the pre-game show on Sunday.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_03]: I did wanna play one clip from Pune.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_03]: I asked him about Jake Brendel.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_03]: I said, what is it that Jake does, that it's hard for everybody to understand, things that a center does, and this is what Dominic Pune had to say.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: Super mental load for the center, they're the reason everybody's on the same page and the other reason the play runs in the first place You know we get to the line and he's got to make the right point every single play of every single game and you know We've talked about like other centers will mess up maybe 40 50 times in a season if you play like a thousand snaps Which is kind of a lot and Jake is he's really under 2015, which is
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: And this offense is not easy and a shan't hand offense.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I think the world of Jake, I think he's a hell of a player.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: And he's definitely the smartest person on the all-align.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I've loved playing next to him for three years now.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: And he's helped me a lot with my game, too.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_03]: probably worth a follow up on like what exactly a mistake is I don't think a mistake is just like a mistake and in the call it's probably you know any sort of negative decision whether it's blocking the wrong eye or making a mistake in protection because for the protection mistakes to a game.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_03]: in a season.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like a lot, but I just thought that was a very texting around, texting my buddy Jeff Schwartz, the offensive line guru, just a really smart NFL guy in general, just put on the show before.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_03]: He reiterated to me, he's been on the show and talked about it
- 18:43[SPEAKER_03]: is really important.
