Chapter eight, The Queen's croquet ground. A large rose tree stood near the
• 0:06
entrance of the garden. The roses growing on it were white, but there
• 0:09
were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red. Alice thought this a
• 0:14
very curious thing, and she went nearer to watch them, And just as
• 0:18
she came up to them, she heard one of them say, look out,
• 0:20
now, Five, don't go splashing paint all over me like that.
• 0:24
I couldn't help it, said five, in a sulky tone. Seven jogged
• 0:28
my elbow, on which seven looked up and said, that's right. Five.
• 0:32
Always lay the blame on others. You'd better not talk, said five.
• 0:37
I heard the queen say only yesterday, you deserve to be beheaded?
• 0:42
What? Four said the one who had spoken first. That's none of your
• 0:47
business, too, said seven. Yes, it is his business, said
• 0:52
five, and I'll tell him it was for bringing the cook tulip brutes instead
• 0:56
of onions. Seven flung down his brush and had just begun well of all
• 1:02
the unjust things, when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice as she stood
• 1:07
watching them, and he checked himself. Suddenly the others looked round also,
• 1:11
and all of them bowed low, would you tell me, said Alice a
• 1:15
little timidly. Why are you painting those roses? Five? And seven said
• 1:21
nothing, but looked at two. Two began in a low voice. Why
• 1:26
the fact is, you see, miss, this here ought to have been
• 1:30
a red rose tree, and we put a white one in by mistake.
• 1:34
And if the Queen was to find out, we should all have our heads
• 1:37
cut off, you know. So you see, miss, we're doing our
• 1:40
best before she comes to. At this moment, five, who'd been anxiously
• 1:45
looking across the garden, called out the queen. The queen and the three
• 1:49
gardeners instantly threw themselves flat upon their faces. There was a sound of many
• 1:53
footsteps, and Alice looked round, eager to see the queen. First came
• 2:00
ten soldiers carrying clubs. They were all shaped like the three gardeners, oblong
• 2:05
and flat, with their hands and feet at the corners. Next the ten
• 2:08
courtiers. These were ornamented all over with diamonds and walked two and two as
• 2:13
the soldiers did. After these came the royal children. There were ten of
• 2:17
them, and the little deers came jumping merrily along hand in hand in couples.
• 2:22
They were all ornamented with hearts. Next came the guests, mostly kings
• 2:27
and queens, and among them Alice recognized the white rabbit. It was talking
• 2:30
in a hurried, nervous manner, smiling at everything that was said, and
• 2:35
went by without noticing her. Then followed the Knave of Hearts, carrying the
• 2:39
King's crown on a crimson velvet cushion. And last of all this grand procession
• 2:44
came the King and Queen of Hearts. Alice was rather doubtful whether she ought
• 2:49
not lie down on her face like the three gardeners, but she could not
• 2:52
remember ever having heard of such a rule of processions. And besides, what
• 2:55
would be the use of a procession, thought she if people all had to
• 3:00
lie down upon their faces so they couldn't see it. So she stood still
• 3:04
where she was and waited. When the procession came opposite to Alice, they
• 3:08
all stopped and looked at her, and the Queen said severely, who is
• 3:12
this? She said it to the Knave of Hearts, who only bowed and
• 3:15
smiled in reply. Idiot, said the Queen, tossing her head impatiently,
• 3:21
and turning to Alice, she went on, what's your name? Child?
• 3:24
My name is Alice, So please, your majesty, said Alice very politely,
• 3:29
but she added to herself, why they're only a pack of cards,
• 3:30
after all, I needn't be afraid of them. And who are these?
• 3:35
Said the queen, pointing to the three gardeners who were lying round the rose
• 3:38
tree. For you see, as they were all lying on their faces,
• 3:42
and the pattern on their backs was the same as the rest of the pack,
• 3:45
she could not tell whether they were her gardeners, or soldiers, or
• 3:47
courtiers, or three of her own children. How should I know, said
• 3:52
Alice, surprised at her own courage. It's no business of mine. The
• 3:57
Queen turned crimson with fury, and, after glaring at her for a moment
• 4:00
like a wild beast, screamed off with her head off. Nonsense, said
• 4:05
Alice, very loudly and decidedly, and the queen was silent. The King
• 4:10
laid his hand upon her arm and timidly said, consider, my dear,
• 4:15
she is only a child. The queen turned angrily away from him and said
• 4:18
to the knave, turn them over. The knave did so very carefully with
• 4:24
one foot. Get up, said the queen in a shrill, loud voice,
• 4:29
and the three gardeners instantly jumped up and began bowing to the King,
• 4:32
the Queen, the royal children and everybody else. Leave off that, screamed
• 4:36
the Queen. You make me giddy, and then turning to the rose tree,
• 4:41
she went on, what have you been doing here? May it please
• 4:45
your majesty? Said two in a very humble tone, going down on one
• 4:48
knee as he spoke. We were trying, I see, said the Queen,
• 4:53
who had meanwhile been examining the roses, off with their heads, and
• 4:58
the procession moved on. Three of the souls remaining behind to execute the unfortunate
• 5:01
gardeners who ran to Alice for protection. You shan't be beheaded, said Alice,
• 5:06
and she put them into a large flower pot that stood near the three
• 5:11
soldiers wandered about for a minute or two looking for them, and then quietly
• 5:14
marched off. After the others are their heads off, shouted the Queen.
• 5:19
Their heads are gone, If it please your majesty, The soldiers shouted in
• 5:23
reply. That's right, shouted the Queen. Can you play croquet? The
• 5:28
soldiers were silent and looked at Alice as the question was evidently meant for her.
• 5:32
Yes, shouted Alice, come on, then roared the queen, and
• 5:36
Alice joined the procession, wondering very much what would happen next. It's a
• 5:42
very fine day, said a timid voice at her side. She was walking
• 5:46
by the white rabbit, who was peeping anxiously into her face. Very said
• 5:50
Alice, where's the duchess? Sh sh said the rabbit in a low,
• 5:55
hurried tone. He looked anxiously over his shoulder as he spoke, and then
• 5:59
raised himself upon tiptoe, put his mouth close to her ear and whispered,
• 6:02
she's under sentence of execution. What for, said Alice? Did you say?
• 6:09
What a pity? The rabbit asked, No, I didn't, said
• 6:13
  Alice. I don't think it's at all a pity. I said, what
• 6:15
for? She boxed the Queen's ears. The rabbit began. Alice gave a
• 6:20
little scream of laughter. Oh hush, the rabbit whispered, in a frightened
• 6:25
tone. The queen will hear you. You see, she came rather late,
• 6:29
and the queen said, get to your places, shouted the queen in
• 6:32
a voice of thunder, and people began running about in all directions, tumbling
• 6:36
up against each other. However, they got settled down in a minute or
• 6:40
two and the game began. Alice thought she had never seen such a curious
• 6:45
croquet ground in her life. It was all bridges and furrows, The balls
• 6:48
were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, and the soldiers had to double
• 6:53
themselves up and to stand on their hands and feet to make the arches.
• 6:57
The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in manage her flamingo. She succeeded
• 7:00
in getting its body tucked away comfortably enough under her arm, with its legs
• 7:04
hanging down, but generally, just as she got its neck nicely straightened out
• 7:09
and was going to give the hedgehog a blow with its head, it would
• 7:12
twist itself round and look up in her face with such a puzzled expression that
• 7:15
she could not help bursting out laughing. And when she got its head down
• 7:19
and she was going to begin again, it was very provoking to find that
• 7:23
the hedgehog had unrolled itself and was in the act of crawling away. Besides
• 7:27
all this, there was generally a ridge or furrow in the way wherever she
• 7:30
wanted to send the hedgehog to, And as the doubled up soldiers were always
• 7:33
getting up and walking off to other parts of the ground. Alice soon came
• 7:36
to the conclusion that it was a very difficult game. Indeed, the players
• 7:42
all played at once without waiting for turns, quarreling all the while and fighting
• 7:46
for the hedgehogs. And in a very short time the Queen was in a
• 7:48
furious fashion and went stamping about and shouting off with his head off with her
• 7:54
head about once in a minute. Alice began to feel very uneasy. To
• 7:59
be sure, she had not as yet had any dispute with the queen,
• 8:01
but she knew that it might happen any minute, and then thought she what
• 8:05
would become of me? They're dreadfully fond of be heading people here. The
• 8:09
great wonder is that there's anyone left alive. She was looking about for some
• 8:13
way of escape and wondering whether she could get away without being seen, when
• 8:18
she noticed a curious appearance in the air. It puzzled her very much at
• 8:22
first, but after watching it a minute or two, she made it out
• 8:24
to be a grin, and she said to herself, it's the chesher cat.
• 8:28
Now I shall have somebody to talk to. How are you getting on?
• 8:31
Said the cat as soon as there was mouth enough for it to speak
• 8:35
with. Alice waited till the eyes appeared, and then nodded. It's no
• 8:39
use speaking to it, she thought, till its years have come, or
• 8:43
at least one of them. In another minute, the whole head appeared,
• 8:46
and then Alice put down her flamingo and began an account of the game,
• 8:50
feeling very glad she had someone to listen to her. The cat seemed to
• 8:54
think that there was enough of it now in sight, and no more of
• 8:56
it appeared. I don't think they play at all fair, Alice began,
• 9:01
in rather a complaining tone. And they all quarrel so dreadfully. One can't
• 9:05
hear one's self speak. And they don't seem to have any rules in particular,
• 9:09
at least if there are, nobody attends to them. And you've no
• 9:13
idea how confusing it is all the things being alive. For instance, there's
• 9:16
the arch I've got to go through next, walking about at the other end
• 9:20
of the ground, And I should have crockaded the queen's hedgehog just now,
• 9:22
only it ran away when it saw mine coming. How do you like the
• 9:26
queen, said the cat in a low voice. Not at all, said
• 9:31
Alice. She's so extremely just then she noticed that the Queen was close behind
• 9:37
her, listening, so she went on, likely to win, that it's
• 9:41
hardly worth while finishing the game. The queen smiled and passed on. Who
• 9:46
are you talking to? Said the king, going up to Alice and looking
• 9:50
at the cat's head with great curiosity. It's a friend of mine, a
• 9:54
cheshia cat, said Alice. Allow me to introduce it. I don't like
• 9:58
the look of it at all, said the king. However, it may
• 10:01
kiss my hand if it likes, and rather not. The cat remarked.
• 10:05
Don't be impertinent, said the king, and don't look at me like that.
• 10:09
He got behind Alice as he spoke. A cat may look at a
• 10:13
king, said Alice. I've read that in some book, but I don't
• 10:16
remember where. Well, it must be removed, said the king, very
• 10:20
decidedly, and he called the queen, who was passing at the moment,
• 10:24
my dear, I wish you would have this cat removed. The queen had
• 10:28
only one way of settling all difficulties, great or small. Off with his
• 10:31
head, she said, without even looking round. I'll fetch the executioner myself,
• 10:37
said the king eagerly, and he hurried off. Alice thought she might
• 10:41
as well go back and see how the game was going on, as she
• 10:45
heard the queen's voice in the distance, screaming with passion. She'd already heard
• 10:48
her sentence three of the players to be executed for having missed their turns,
• 10:52
and she did not like the look of things at all, as the game
• 10:54
was in such confusion that she never knew whether it was her turn or not,
• 10:58
so she went in search of her hedgehog. The hedgehog was engaged in
• 11:01
a fight with another hedgehog, which seemed to Alice an excellent opportunity for croqueting
• 11:05
one of them with the other. The only difficulty was that her flamingo was
• 11:09
gone across to the other side of the garden, where Alice could see it
• 11:11
trying in a helpless sort of way to fly up into a tree. By
• 11:16
the time she had caught the flamingo and brought it back, the fight was
• 11:18
over and both the hedgehogs were out of sight. But it doesn't matter much,
• 11:22
thought Alice, as all the arches are gone from this side of the
• 11:26
ground, so she tucked it away under her arm that it might not escape
• 11:28
again and went back for a little more conversation with her friend. When she
• 11:33
got back to the Cheshire Cat, she was surprised to find quite a large
• 11:35
crowd collected around it. There was a dispute going on between the executioner,
• 11:39
the King, and the Queen, who were all talking at once, while
• 11:43
all the rest were quite silent and looked very uncomfortable. The moment Alice appeared,
• 11:48
she was appealed to by all three to settle the question, and they
• 11:52
repeated their arguments to her, though as they all spoke at once, she
• 11:54
found it very hard indeed to make out exactly what they said. The executioner's
• 11:58
argument was you couldn't cut off a head unless there was a body to cut
• 12:03
it off from, that he had never had to do such a thing before,
• 12:05
and he wasn't going to begin at his time of life. The King's
• 12:09
argument was that anything that had a head could be beheaded, and that you
• 12:13
weren't to talk nonsense. The Queen's argument was that if something wasn't done about
• 12:18
it in less than no time, she'd had everybody executed all around. It
• 12:22
was this last remark that had made the whole party look so grave and anxious,
• 12:26
Alice could think of nothing else to say. But it belongs to the
• 12:31
duchess. You'd better ask her about it. She's in prison, the queen
• 12:33
said to the executioner, fetch her here, and the executioner went off like
• 12:39
an arrow. The cat's head began fading away the moment he was gone,
• 12:43
and by the time he had come back with the duchess, it had entirely
• 12:46
disappeared. So the King and the executioner ran wildly up and down looking for
• 12:50
it, while the rest of the party went back to the game. End
• 12:54
