- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. I hope that you're having a good
- 0:17day today. Today we are in Psalm 125, Psalm
- 0:22125, and we're making our way through Book 5 of Psalms.
- 0:27After this Psalm, we will have 20, five more.
- 0:31So that'll be 5 full weeks of Tabernacle talk and then we will
- 0:36be all done with book 5 of Psalms.
- 0:39It blows my mind that in five short weeks from the recording
- 0:46of this episode, we will have gone through all of Psalms
- 0:53together. I don't know if you guys have
- 0:56ever tried to read through like a book of the Bible in one
- 0:59sitting. I've done that with many of the
- 1:02shorter ones. I think of longer books.
- 1:05I have read through all at one time.
- 1:09Jeremiah, actually, at one point I had a long plane ride and I
- 1:15was going to be teaching a Sunday school lesson on it.
- 1:17And I was like, I don't, I don't really know a whole ton about
- 1:19Jeremiah. And so I read through all of it
- 1:22and it was honestly, it was great study, really glad that I
- 1:26did that all in one sitting. But to go through all 150 Psalms
- 1:31would take you a tremendously long time.
- 1:34And So what a joy to have walked through this with you and
- 1:39whether you are just now kind of tuning into Tabernacle Talk or
- 1:43whether you have been with me for the last almost two years
- 1:50now, beginning in 2024, I think I started book 1 of Psalms in
- 1:57March of 24, I think. And so it'll be about that time
- 2:02that we finish book 5. And then I'm not totally certain
- 2:08which book I'm going to do after we are completed with Psalms,
- 2:13but I am looking forward to whichever book it is.
- 2:16I might make my way back into the New Testament.
- 2:23If you have any thoughts, throw it in, drop a comment.
- 2:26If you have my number, shoot me a text.
- 2:30But or if you're on, you know, Facebook or Instagram or
- 2:33something, shoot AADM. And I would love to hear from
- 2:37you in particular, if there's some book of the Bible that you
- 2:41would like to learn more about or you'd like to study more, I
- 2:46would love to help in in whatever way that I can.
- 2:49You can also look at tbces.sex.com/bible.
- 2:54So that's my church's Tabernacle Baptist web address,
- 2:59tbces.sex.com/bible. And when you go there, you can
- 3:05look at resources from every single book of the Bible.
- 3:09So all of my Tabernacle talk episodes I have linked there.
- 3:14Within each of those, any sermons that I have preached,
- 3:18I've got sermons from Genesis, Third John, Daniel, the Gospel
- 3:25of John, Philippians, some in Romans, and then now a
- 3:30smattering of others in Colossians and in some other
- 3:34places. So I have all of those that are
- 3:36linked there. And so if that can be a help to
- 3:39you in any way, I would certainly love for you to
- 3:42utilize that resource. It is there for you.
- 3:46So all of that to say, we are in Psalm 125 and this is another
- 3:51one of the song of a sense. And this is the group of Psalms
- 3:59that the children of Israel would sing as they were making
- 4:02their annual pilgrimages to Jerusalem for one of the three
- 4:08feasts that the Jewish people celebrated together in
- 4:11remembering what God had done for them.
- 4:14And so that's what this Psalm, that's the occasion of this
- 4:18Psalm. So let's read through verses one
- 4:20through 5 together and we'll see what the Lord has for us today.
- 4:24Those who trust in Yahweh are like Mount Zion.
- 4:28It cannot be shaken, it remains forever.
- 4:31The mountains surround Jerusalem and Yahweh surrounds His people
- 4:36both now and forever. The scepter of the wicked will
- 4:39not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, so
- 4:43that the righteous will not apply their hands to injustice.
- 4:47Do what is good Yahweh to the good, to those whose hearts are
- 4:51upright. But As for those who turn aside
- 4:54to crooked ways, Yahweh will banish them with the evil doers.
- 4:58Peace be with Israel. All right, you might go.
- 5:03I don't really know what this has to do with me.
- 5:05Trust me, my friend, it's got a lot to do with you today.
- 5:08Let's like be first at verses one and two says those who trust
- 5:12in Yahweh are like Mount Zion. That's Jerusalem.
- 5:16He says it cannot be shaken. It remains forever.
- 5:20Now, what is meant by that? This is not saying there will
- 5:24never be any earthquake in Jerusalem.
- 5:27Here. It cannot be shaken.
- 5:29OK, If there's an earthquake in Jerusalem, God's word isn't
- 5:31true. Jerusalem really can be shaken.
- 5:34No, that's not the point. The point is the mountains are
- 5:37those things that they just stick around.
- 5:40You can't really do anything about that.
- 5:42I can look at, you know, Mount Everest or with the exception
- 5:48of, you know, a big volcanic, big volcanic mountain like, you
- 5:52know, Vesuvius or Saint Helens or, or one of those ones that
- 5:58explode and they're gone. A regular mountain.
- 6:01It's just, it's up there and you just kind of have to deal with
- 6:04it. It's not going anywhere.
- 6:06And it will far outlast your life.
- 6:09And here the psalmist says this is what those who trust in God
- 6:13are like, that there is an unshakeability, there is a
- 6:16permanence, there is an everlastingness to those who
- 6:20have anchored themselves to the eternal God that we don't have
- 6:25like a lasting impact or lasting trait on our own.
- 6:31It comes from the fact that when we are connected with God, we
- 6:35experience everything good from Him.
- 6:38We partake in, if you will, His life.
- 6:41Or, as we're told in the New Testament, when we see Him, we
- 6:46will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.
- 6:50Or as Paul tells us in Philippians 2, that we are made
- 6:53to become those that would shine out in the world.
- 6:58That we are being conformed more and more to the image of Christ,
- 7:02and especially on that day when either the Lord returns or calls
- 7:06us home, that we the the fancy theological term is theosis.
- 7:12That we are becoming like Jesus, not in that we're becoming many
- 7:17gods, but we partake more and more of his nature even as we
- 7:22hear in second Peter chapter one O what a joy that we can find
- 7:28security and and everlastingness, if I can phrase
- 7:33it that way, in the fact that because we trust in God, he is
- 7:38good to us. He gives us an unshakeability.
- 7:42What a joy to that, but I love him verse 2.
- 7:45He doesn't just say you have a permanence about your existence
- 7:51as you trust in God because you're one of his people.
- 7:54And he will never, he will never lose any of his people.
- 7:59And so that means that even death itself will not separate
- 8:03us from him. And he made us to be alive.
- 8:06And he will not be foiled in those plans.
- 8:09And so we will rise again even as Jesus rose again.
- 8:13So verse #2 then says the mountains surround Jerusalem and
- 8:17Yahweh surrounds his people both now and forever.
- 8:22And so here you can think of a mountain range that very seldom
- 8:26do. You just have one really tall
- 8:29mountain that's just chilling all there on its own.
- 8:31No, normally there's a range of larger and larger hills and then
- 8:37mountains. And here the picture that's
- 8:39given is just like a mountain is surrounded by other mountains
- 8:45within the range. Here God surrounds his people
- 8:50that he is right there by us. We are not on our own.
- 8:54We are not, if you will, in danger of being attacked by
- 9:01other people and having no ref, no refuge Here it is God is
- 9:07watching over me and just like think again.
- 9:10This is one of the song of a sense.
- 9:12So they are literally walking to Jerusalem and they are, you can
- 9:17picture here within the mountain ranges and they go, man,
- 9:22Jerusalem is just surrounded by all of this stuff here that I
- 9:26see. And so it is that God surrounds
- 9:30me that I can know even though I can't see it with my eyes, yet I
- 9:36can know that God is all around me.
- 9:39I'm thankful for the omnipresence of God.
- 9:42That is, God is everywhere that he desires to be.
- 9:45There is no portion of of earth or the skies or the land or the
- 9:50grave where God cannot go, where God cannot see me, and where God
- 9:57is. He is never helpless.
- 9:58There was always actions that He is taking to protect and to
- 10:03provide, to encourage, to comfort, to care for, to mold
- 10:08and shape me into the person that He wants me to be.
- 10:12And So what a joy that God surrounds us.
- 10:15And I love the picture when I think of being surrounded by one
- 10:19person. The mental picture I get is a
- 10:22big hug. Or I watched the Guardians of
- 10:26the Galaxy movie, The first one the other night with my wife.
- 10:29And you have grouped the big like tree thing and he protects
- 10:35all of his buddies by, you know, growing out branches and stuff.
- 10:38And so he's totally surrounding them and he's protecting them.
- 10:42And I think here with the Lord surrounding us, it it is that he
- 10:46is bigger than we are and so he can surround us.
- 10:50And here it doesn't just say the Lord surrounds me.
- 10:52He says the Lord surrounds his people.
- 10:55And I think of the old song. I don't know if I could classify
- 10:58it as a hymn necessarily, but it says my God is so big, so strong
- 11:03and so mighty. There's nothing my God cannot
- 11:06do. We serve a big God.
- 11:10And this God, if you will, I'm certain if you wanted to be, he
- 11:13could be literally, physically very big.
- 11:17But it's metaphorically that he is big, that he is big in his
- 11:22power, He's big in his wisdom, He's big in his abilities.
- 11:28He is the biggest being that there possibly ever could be.
- 11:33And that is the God who surrounds you and I.
- 11:36So let that bring comfort to our lives, that we are unshakable in
- 11:41Him, that our trust in Him is warranted, that He surrounds us.
- 11:47What a joy then. Verse #3 The scepter of the
- 11:50wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous,
- 11:54so that the righteous will not apply their hands to injustice.
- 11:58Hear this verse. It runs very contrary to,
- 12:03unfortunately, a line that you might hear from from people from
- 12:08time to time as it relates to governmental leaders, that
- 12:13sometimes you'll hear, yeah, that person, they've got a
- 12:16filthy mouth. They've made some underhanded
- 12:21business deals or they bribed someone or, you know, they had
- 12:27to go on trial for this bad thing that they did or that, or
- 12:32they bragged about their, you know, sexual immorality.
- 12:36They're bragging about their greed.
- 12:40They are, you know, wholeheartedly in favor of the
- 12:45the death of the unborn. And and so, but here's what you
- 12:51need to understand is that when you're voting for a politician,
- 12:54you're not voting for a pastor. And so it's fine if they are
- 12:59evil in the eyes of God. It's just they espouse some
- 13:05policies that I think will give me more money, My dear friends,
- 13:11absolutely not. And here's why.
- 13:15Verse #3 here says the scepter of the wicked will not remain
- 13:18over the land allotted to the righteous.
- 13:21What is the land allotted to the righteous?
- 13:23Well, we pray it in the Lord's Prayer.
- 13:25God, your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.
- 13:30God is certainly the ultimate righteous one.
- 13:32I'm not saying, but we need to make it so that we have just a
- 13:36Christian nation or just a Baptist nation and and that's
- 13:39the people that really deserve this land.
- 13:42No, no, no, God's the one that deserves every piece of land.
- 13:46And so there should be no scepters of wickedness over any
- 13:51portion of land. And here as the scepter of the
- 13:55wicked, what the psalmist here tells us is that the longer you
- 14:01have the wicked remaining in power, the end of verse three.
- 14:05Look at it. The righteous will apply their
- 14:08hands to injustice. So he says, God, I need you to
- 14:14remove evil doers from being in control so that people that want
- 14:20to follow you don't throw in the towel and just go, OK, I guess
- 14:24I'm going to start doing evil because that's what's required.
- 14:27And to be in this country or this day and age, may we be
- 14:32those that hold firmly to our convictions no matter what, and
- 14:37that we don't lend our support to the wicked actions of others.
- 14:45Now, we might say a person can certainly say I agree with this
- 14:51and this and this and this of a particular person.
- 14:54I strongly disagree with this and that person and I can vote.
- 14:57But I, I am not saying that the evil that they're doing is fine.
- 15:03I'm saying no, that's actually a problem.
- 15:05And when we vote for people, you should attempt as best as we
- 15:09have the ability to be able to do it, to say if I have the
- 15:13choice between two people, 1 is a legitimate Christian like 1 is
- 15:18a person that is trying to live their life for the Lord in
- 15:22faith. I'm going to choose to go with
- 15:25that person instead of a person who though he might be more
- 15:29politically savvy, though he might put more money in your
- 15:32pocket, is wicked and is defiant of God and rejoices in their
- 15:39sin. That if you have the option
- 15:41between the two, you go. No, I'm going to go with the
- 15:44righteous decision, not the, you know, most expedient position or
- 15:50the position that will give me the most money in my life.
- 15:54Instead, my friends, may we realize the most important thing
- 15:58in your life, in my life, in our nation is not material wealth
- 16:03and goods. The most important thing is our
- 16:06relationship with God. It is doing what is right and
- 16:10good. Now you might go, OK, well I
- 16:13don't really know that that fits the bill for any person that's
- 16:17in politics. Well, now you get why we need
- 16:20Jesus. It's why he is the King.
- 16:22And I am glad that there are people that run for public
- 16:25office that are genuine Christians.
- 16:28And I've met several over the years that have been legitimate
- 16:33in the way that they exercise their faith.
- 16:35Some of them, even as they have stood both for life and as they
- 16:40have stood for character, even within politics, they have
- 16:45suffered greatly for it. And I having seen their
- 16:49behavior, having seen the way that they laid down their lives
- 16:54so that they would do what is right in the eyes of God, I'm
- 16:59convinced that that is the best way to operate.
- 17:02And so I want to encourage you with the psalmist here, pray the
- 17:05word of God. God pray, I pray that the
- 17:07scepter of the wicked will not remain so that the righteous
- 17:11will not apply their hands to injustice.
- 17:13The old phrase monkey see, monkey do is very accurate.
- 17:17And what we see is what we begin doing.
- 17:20What we hear is what we begin saying.
- 17:22And so let us seek out rulers that are good, that follow King
- 17:28Jesus in the way that they speak and act and legislate.
- 17:33That is a good thing to do. Verse #4 do what is good, Yahweh
- 17:37to the good, to those whose hearts are upright.
- 17:41This is a prayer. We can even pray for ourselves
- 17:43to say, God, as I'm seeking you, as I want my heart to be
- 17:47upright, would you bless me? Would you allow me to be able to
- 17:51do more good that it wouldn't just be God as I am following
- 17:55you? Would you give me $1,000,000?
- 17:56No, it would be something more like God.
- 18:01Would you? I'm seeking to walk with you.
- 18:04Would you bless me so that I can be a blessing to my neighbor?
- 18:08Would you give me enough funds that I am able to help out the
- 18:12poor in a greater way? Would you help me so that I am
- 18:15able to be a blessing to my church?
- 18:18And as we seek the Lord's ways, we can expect here that God will
- 18:25bless who who bless in a myriad of ways.
- 18:27It might be financial, it might be relational.
- 18:30It might strictly be like spiritual within yourself that
- 18:33the Holy Spirit is bringing you joy and comfort and peace, or
- 18:37he's purging sins out of your life that you have been
- 18:40struggling with for a long time. But however God blesses you,
- 18:44know that when we obey, it will bring the blessing of God.
- 18:48It will bring God's goodness that he is bringing into our
- 18:51lives. But then the psalmist kind of
- 18:54ends this Psalm with the flip side.
- 18:56God do good to those who are following you, to those who are,
- 19:00whose hearts are upright, he says.
- 19:01But As for those who turn aside to crooked ways, Yahweh will
- 19:06banish them with the evildoers. Hear this word, banish them.
- 19:09It's like send them out that they're going to be LED away.
- 19:15So you can think of like the Babylonian exile that the
- 19:18children of Israel went through. And here there's this prayer,
- 19:23God, for those even within our country that do not do what is
- 19:29right. God, would you send them away
- 19:31that they would not be those that would be consistently
- 19:34polluting our land with evil. Now, here's the flip side that
- 19:40I've tried to mention often, especially as we're walking
- 19:42through Psalms, because this is prior to Christ's Advent.
- 19:46And so that shapes how we think about our world.
- 19:49Even those that are crooked and evil and wicked can be turned to
- 19:57Christ. How do I know that?
- 19:59Well, I'm one of those people. When I look at my life, I don't
- 20:02go, man, Brian's just so holy and so great and so good.
- 20:06I'm like, I am not doing well. Like I, I can't be who God wants
- 20:12me to be. I can't be perfect enough to.
- 20:17Make all of my like relationships in life great.
- 20:21Instead, I feel my God, I feel those that I love.
- 20:25And So what in the world am I to do?
- 20:27Am I to be one of those these that is banished?
- 20:30I'm thankful for Jesus because he rescues us and he turns those
- 20:35that were wicked and unjust and evil and crooked into those that
- 20:39are the good, the upright, the righteous, not as a result of my
- 20:44perfection, but as a result of the perfection of Jesus.
- 20:47And he's given me his Holy Spirit so that I can walk the
- 20:52right path, the path that God wants me to walk.
- 20:55And so even here, as we can pray for the spiritual health of our
- 21:00nation, let's also remember the goal is not OK Deport everyone
- 21:05that is, you know, evil in the eyes of God because then we'd
- 21:09all be gone and there would be no one left in the land.
- 21:12The goal is God. Yes, it is good for us if there
- 21:16are righteous people in our land.
- 21:18And God, would you help me to be a part of the solution through
- 21:23personally walking with you and then through sharing Jesus with
- 21:26others so that they too will walk with you.
- 21:29And our nation will become more righteous as a result.
- 21:34I love then how the Psalm ends. He says peace be with Israel.
- 21:37This is Shalom. It's that ultimate rest and
- 21:41peace and goodness. May that be with our nation as
- 21:47we pursue the righteousness of Christ, as we endorse and as we
- 21:52love and we lift up people that are truly wanting to walk with
- 21:58God and do his will. Not the will of a party, not the
- 22:02will of a politician, not the will of you know, special
- 22:05interest groups or something like that, but that just want to
- 22:08follow the Lord in the way that they do politics.
- 22:14There is peace that is there. There is a goodness I can think.
- 22:18Certainly America's history has been very flawed, very sin
- 22:21filled in 1000 different ways. But in the times where we have
- 22:26genuinely sought to follow and obey God and I say we when when
- 22:32specific politicians in positions of leadership when
- 22:38they have pursued God. It has gone well with the
- 22:41nation, as we hear from Solomon, when a nation, when the rulers
- 22:49of a nation are righteous, the righteous rejoice.
- 22:54But when the wicked are in charge, when the wicked rule,
- 22:58there is grief, their sorrow as a result of it.
- 23:02Can I encourage you? Are you the kind of Christian
- 23:05that you wish that your politicians were?
- 23:08If our politicians have the same walk with Jesus that you do,
- 23:13what state would our nation be in?
- 23:15If every person at your church was the kind of Christian that
- 23:21you are, how would your church look?
- 23:24Where'd your church survive? Would your church have anyone
- 23:29serving in it? I just want to encourage you
- 23:32with that thought. Be the change that you want to
- 23:35see. Be the change you want to see in
- 23:37our nation, and thanks be to Jesus who has given us his
- 23:42righteousness that we did not earn and could not deserve.
- 23:47But because of his goodness, we are forgiven and restored, and
- 23:51God's presence is with us. We can trust in Him.
- 23:53He surrounds us with his goodness.
- 23:55He indwells us by His Spirit. And what a worthy God that He
- 23:59is. Thanks for tuning in today, and
- 24:02we'll be in Psalm 126 next time.
