- 0:00SPEAKER_00: She said a bunch of things, but the one that really stuck with me was, I just don't think you're worth a six-figure salary.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: And when she said that, I was like, sacral activated.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: We can no longer stay here.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Two days later, I like went into the office.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: I dropped off my laptop.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I dropped, dropped off a resignation letter on our desk that was just like effective immediately.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I don't work here anymore.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And that was the day I became an entrepreneur.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the favorite self podcast.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: I like to think of it not as your future self or your best self, but your favorite self.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: My favorite self that just makes me feel the truest version of me.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: What lights your favorite self on fire?
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I'm Carly Otaway, founder, author, storyteller, and a woman who learned that building a successful life means nothing if it doesn't feel like yours.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: This podcast is for women who are building businesses, raising families, leading movements, and asking themselves, is this it or is there more available to me?
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: This is your invitation to come back to yourself.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Let's dig in.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Today's conversation is a full circle one because we're talking about visibility, personal branding, PR, and what happens when you decide to stop waiting for permission to be seen.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Katrina Owens is a personal branding and PR expert who helps founders and leaders turn their personal brands into revenue generating assets.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: After leaving a decade-long corporate marketing and PR career, she started her own personal brand with zero online presence and a lot of resistance to showing up.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Three years later, she's built a six-figure personal brand through speaking, brand partnerships, sold-out events, and the kind of visibility that creates real opportunity.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: In this episode, we're talking about what it actually means to build big brand energy, why visibility is a strategy and a self-belief practice, and how women can use their personal brands to move towards their biggest dreams.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: I can't wait for you to hear it.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Hello and welcome back to the Favorite Self Podcast.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: We have another super special episode for you today.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: I am so excited to be joined here with my like long-lost soulmate.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: We'll get into that.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Trina Owens.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for being here.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, thank you for having me, Carly.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I have been looking forward to this like for weeks, pretty much since like you invited me on.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: So I know we're gonna have like the best conversation ever.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: So people should buckle up.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: I feel the exact same.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Like I was so excited seeing into my calendar, and today is the day.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: And I have to start just by sharing our hilarious story because we just recently, I call it reunited, but I mean we met for the first time in real life in March of this year at the High Vibe Women event and found out because you're based in Vancouver currently.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: I'm north of Toronto, and we went to the same high school.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and the smallest high school ever, by the way.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Like in the middle of the cow field.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Like literally nobody would know about it.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, that's how you know we were meant to like be in each other's lives.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: The universe has like been trying to make us cross paths since we were youth.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Oh my God.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: It was the coolest realization because when you're a small town girl like we are, and you just meet someone that knows where your town that you grew up in, that is a big deal.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Let alone when you realize, what we went to the same high school, not at exactly the same time.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: I'm a little bit older.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: We don't need to, we don't need to talk about that.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: I was like, I'm like, wow, I don't think that we were at the school at the at the same time.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: But I went, I'm thinking I'm a year older than your brother.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Yes, and he remembers your name.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So yeah, wild.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Wild.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: But other than that, can you just start for people who are meeting you for the first time and share a little bit about who you are and what you do and just the work that you're so lit up with right now?
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Well, you know what, Carly?
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm gonna try a new intro today.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So I'm Katrina.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I'm a personal branding and public relations consultant by trade.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: But my favorite self is Katrina Owens, the media personality, the event host, the podcast host, the soon-to-be, should we say, best-selling author.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I really help business owners, not just business owners, but women, anyone who's looking to really believe that the possibilities are endless for themselves.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And when I mean like endless, like you can be whatever you want when you grow up.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Um, that's that's what I help facilitate through my speaking, my my content online, my podcasts, my events, all of that.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So that was probably the most ineloquent uh introduction ever, but I'm in transition right now.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: So we're just experimenting.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: It was perfect.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: It was perfect.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: And we are all for the real raw candid intros around here.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: And I know you're going to be and already are such an expander for so many with this, especially through this conversation.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: But first, I have to talk about speaking of the small town piece, you know, something you and I can both relate on.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Shout out to Plotsville and New Dundee.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: And if you know where those towns are, then you immediately are VIP in our lives.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Tell me about because this is something you and I can relate on.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And anyone growing who grew up in a small town, especially before the age of social media, which maybe you were a little different.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: When I was in high school, basically.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, yes.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: I'm really aging myself here.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: But tell me about how, you know, growing up in a small town and just like what beliefs you had and how did that maybe like did you feel that you were playing small?
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: We we talked a little bit about how you had a big belief shift.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: And I'd love to dive right into that and how like your upbringing being from a small town, you know, how how you navigated that.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's funny because it's one of those things that people talk about all the time.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: It's like when you grow up in a small town, like you are impacted by those small town limiting beliefs.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And for a long time, I actually didn't think that was necessarily true about myself.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Like I went to university in in Hamilton.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: I went to McMaster, and from there I graduated and got a job in the sports industry and in golf.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: So moved to Vancouver when I was very, very young.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: And at that point, I was still like young and excited.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: And like I really thought I was gonna be a sports broadcaster and I had all of these big dreams.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And so, interestingly enough, like I had enough self-belief that when I was young, I didn't let the small town vibes really like eat away at me.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: But once I moved to Vancouver and I worked in the sports industry for a couple of years, and then I eventually transitioned into a more corporate role, that was when I really started to feel like the walls kind of close in on me a little bit.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and so unintentionally, but I I left the sports industry because I was like, I need to get a real job, I need to get something that pays more, that um, you know, doesn't that feels easier to kind of work your way up the ladder, like all of the things that I think my parents wanted for me.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Um, we love them, but like, you know, they they were really set on like you go to school, you get a good job, and then that's you do that job until you retire.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And during my corporate career was when I started to feel like the possibilities were not endless.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Like I really started to feel like, is this it?
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Like this it, we get this job, and we just kind of like go about our day doing this job, feeling like I'm really meh.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Because that was really how I felt about my life.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Like I just kind of felt like, okay, it's fine, but it's certainly nothing that um, you know, I would have aspired to have when I was young and imaginative and and all of those things.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: So it was when I became an entrepreneur that I finally started to realize that we can be whatever we want when we grow up, but I had to go through the the opposite first.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: And I do look back and think lots of that was informed by like the small town, the small town upbringing.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: But so much of that too, I think was from like the corporate conditioning, too, of like, you know, like this is the best that it can get, which is a terrible place to to be in your career.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: But that's what I believed for a long time.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and also how that's what they want you to think, you know, and that really the setting is created in that way.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: I think so many people are gonna be able to relate to that.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: And I I totally understand what you mean about the small town because I feel like I from a young age always had this inner knowing that I was like made for more or I was called for more, but I just didn't understand or see to like to believe what was possible.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: I relate that to that too, because like I grew up and I was a dancer, like I was in competitive dance, like I loved the spotlight.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: I oh, here's a niche reference for you.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: I was ambassador of the fall fair one year.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: No, you were not.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Of course you were.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Um so like I did all of those like really fun, like expansive things when I was young.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: And then I don't really even know like when the shift happened.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: I just remember like eventually, probably 10 years later, like mid-20s, being in my corporate career and being like, this kind of sucks, but like I was just raised, oh, this is like, you know, my parents will never listen to this, God forbid.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: But my dad was just kind of like, a job is a job.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: So like you aren't, you don't have to love it, but if it pays you well and it treats you well, like be grateful for that job.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: So that was really what I was instilled with for a very long time.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: And um, yeah, then I was not grateful for my job eventually because it was not a great place to work um mental health-wise.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it's just it really like life.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: I think as children, we are so uh I think some of us are so lucky to be raised in a world where like, yes, you can be anything that you want, and you can go do this, and we'll put you in dance and you can perform, but then you like become an adult, and then it's like, and now reality.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And I think that was it for me.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, now it's time to be an adult and like be realistic.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Yes, and it catch a mindset piece, which we're gonna dive into, but I love that your first taste of theme was the fall fair, of course.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, that makes total sense.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, totally.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: So I I have to know a little bit then.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Do you think that when you were in your corporate career, did you believe that this version of yourself, of being a business owner, business leader, and this part like this evolution of your own personal brand existed?
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: No.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: Was there any vision?
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: No.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: So you know what's crazy?
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: I was, I think I talk about this in a podcast episode of mine that just came out today, where I, this was about two years before I left my corporate career.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: And so the the audience should know that I like did not dream of being an entrepreneur or a business owner.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Like that felt so out of my realm of possibility.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: But I had gone out for dinner with a friend who had recently moved to Vancouver, and she was someone who had everything that I had ever wanted in my career.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: So she had a very prominent job in the sports industry, very glamorous.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: She had brand deals, she had a following on Instagram, she had all of the things.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: And I remember sitting with her at dinner saying, Yeah, like a previous version of me wanted all of that stuff.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: But like I actually just decided that like it's not really for me.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not really interested in that, in that kind of like visibility and that kind of like online presence.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm just not interested in any of that.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And I said that to her at that dinner, and I believed it, but I actually think it was a version of myself that was trying to really protect all of the feelings that I had shoved way, way, way, way down.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Um, because I look back on that conversation, and it was about two years after that, not even maybe a little bit less than two years, that I left and and started a business and really decided I wanted to like have a personal brand.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: And so I actually think I was lying to myself for a long time.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: I think I felt like all of the things I wanted just were not in my realm of possibility.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: So I told myself I was okay with that, which is crazy work.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:09unknown: Yeah.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: So fascinating.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And that you were exactly like convincing yourself of that to maybe make your reality feel better and feel more aligned.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: I have to know do you what do you know your sun, moon, and rising sunrology?
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Libra sun, Gemini moon, Libra rising.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, cool.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: And I need to like, I'm sure there's Leo in your chart somewhere as well that I'm like, so I'm like, okay, what's your north note?
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: What's your I we gotta get?
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: I'll send it to you after.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll get it, we'll get offline.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Um, and what's your human design?
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: I'm a generator.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: So sacral generator.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: So like everything going like full intuition, which is so me, but it wasn't for a very, very long time.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I don't feel like the corporate world is wanting you to tap into your intuition and trust your gut.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: That's not how you're conditioned in that space.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: So can you talk a little bit about like making that leap from corporate and what did that look like for you?
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: What were some fears that were holding you back?
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: And what really gave you the courage to just go for it?
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I I took the leap really, really abruptly.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: So essentially I was working at a job that I had only been in for about 10 months because the job I had been at before that for almost four years, um, it changed owners.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: So there was all this transition.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: The new ownership at this previous job was going to uh kind of decrease my job title, take away some vacation time, all of this stuff because they were like a very big corporate entity.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, you know what?
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: There's probably a better option out there for me.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: So I transitioned into like an entirely different company as that, as that business changed hands.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: And so I was in this new role for about 10 months and they promised me the world.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: They were like, you will have, we're building a new office building.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: You're gonna have this gorgeous office with all these windows.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: You are going to be the marketing and sales director.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: You can make like your learning or your earning potential is unlimited.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: They told me all of those things.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And at the same time, I was like constantly like witnessing these like red flags.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: So, like certain things that were like said about me or like different ways that my like direct superior would be like trying to like micromanage or like control me.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: And eventually I got to a point where I was doing like three different jobs at this company because it was small, like kind of startup vibes.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Okay, well, you know what?
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: It's about time I asked for a raise.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Like I'm coming up on a year here, so I I think I'm worthy of a job title increase and a salary increase and all of the things.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: And so I'd asked for it.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: And the president of the company was like, Okay, well, you know what?
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: I I totally hear you on this.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: I I definitely think you're doing a great job.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Go back and run all of the numbers in your department to see what we can afford to like pay you on an increased salary.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: And then, like, obviously, you need to hire some support.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: So map it all out.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: So I'd never done that before, but I like mapped out all the financials from the marketing department that I was running.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: And I figured out how much they could pay me while still hiring someone and all of the things.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: So I like I yeah, I look back at myself and I'm like, okay, she had the she had the financial capabilities to map out, map out the department.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: And so I brought it back to my boss and he was like, probably shocked that I figured this out.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Okay, uh leave this with me.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Like, we'll come back to it in like a couple weeks.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Like, let me just like, you know, have a meeting or whatever, like take it away.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: So a couple weeks go by and all of a sudden I get this like a random meeting invitation in my calendar, and it's just like my my direct boss's name, so not the president, but the vice president and me.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: And it's like connect.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: And so I'm not thinking it's like anything out of the ordinary, I just think it's like a a regular meeting.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: And I go in, and this woman tears me to shreds.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: She was talking about how she felt like she was managing a manager, which I think is hilarious because I'm like, well, you are the VP of a company, so you are a manager of managers, by the way.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Um, and she said a bunch of things, but the one that really stuck with me was, I just don't think you're worth a six-figure salary.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: And when she said that, I was like, sacral activated.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: We can no longer stay here.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: And I actually got up and I was like, you know what?
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: You have said a lot today.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: I have to take some time to think about it.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna go home.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: And I went home.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: And as soon as I was in the car, I was like calling all of these different people in my network, like previous bosses, previous contacts.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, listen, I'm leaving my job.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: What do you have for me?
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Like in the meantime.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: And essentially to basically like wrap up the story, is two days later, I like went into the office, I dropped off my laptop, I dropped, dropped off a resignation letter on our desk that was just like effective immediately.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: I don't work here anymore.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: And that was the day I became an entrepreneur.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: No.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: And so where did I get the courage?
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Well, my partner is an entrepreneur.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: He owns a landscaping company that has done so, so well.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: And I've been alongside him as he's built that up.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: And in the months leading up to this like big moment, there were like salary negotiations and red flags and all of these things where he kept saying, like, I think you could just like do your own thing.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Like he had planted the seed.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: And so if he hadn't, I don't think I ever would have like taken the leap.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I do think that was the first time I like really listened to my gut and I was like, oh, we can never come back to this office.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Oh my God.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: I feel like I didn't know that about your story.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: And I can totally relate because I had a situation where I had a similar kind of toxic boss that gave me an ultimatum.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, I read your book.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: So and then same, like my husband, or it wasn't my husband at the time.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: I he was my believer and had to like really he was my mirror reflecting that belief in me before I had it for myself.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: And you know, thank goodness we have those people in our lives.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: And oh my God.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I love that.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: So do you tell me a little bit about the the identity shift then that you navigated from corporate daddy to entrepreneur?
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: And also I want to talk about how you went from, you know, the agency work to where you are now in personal branding.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So you know what's so interesting.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: I like look back on like after I left and like I wish I was more connected to like that version of me because it's hard for me to actually like remember how I felt in that period of time.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: So for context for the for the audience, so I left my that corporate job and like just started picking up clients.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: One of the clients I picked up was like a part-time marketing director position.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: So I basically negotiated with an with an agency and was like, they really wanted to hire me.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, okay, you can hire me, but I'm only gonna work part-time.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: And I was working for them and I was picking up my own clients.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: So I was still not fully like committed to the entrepreneur like concept yet.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Like I really didn't believe that I could fully do it.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: So I worked there for about six or seven months, and I actually even signed a full-time contract with them because they gave me an ultimatum because they were like, Well, like we really want you to be like our marketing director, like fully in.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Like, we don't love that you're like also picking up clients.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: And I think you, I feel like in your book, I read something that there was something that you can relate to on that piece.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Cause I was reading and I'm like, oh, that was kind of like my situation.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: And so I got to a point where I was like, okay, I have to decide.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: And I was so miserable going into that office every single day.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: It was all men, and it was very quiet, and I can be a little bit loud and excited.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: And there was one morning when I went in and I was talking to one of the other like managers and we're laughing about something, and one of the partners in that company, I could feel him like glaring at me for like being too loud at like 9 a.m.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: in this office.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I can't keep coming in here.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Like I'm being stifled at this point.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: And I think, you know, if my intuition was screaming at me when I when I left my like.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Corporate job where I was not worth the six-figure salary.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Like now it was turned on.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: And so I'm like, okay, the intuition is now knowing and I'm getting more comfortable listening to it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And so I started to realize, like, okay, you're so miserable going into this agency office every single day.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Like, this is not for you anymore.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: And it's okay to change your mind.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: So I basically said to them, like, you know what?
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: I am having some like mental health challenges.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: So I'm just gonna leave.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: I couldn't even tell them that I wanted to leave because I wanted to focus on my business.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm like, it's easier if I just say I'm struggling, like, which I was not a lie, because I really was.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: But at the core, I knew the reason why I was struggling was because I was so out of alignment in what I was doing.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: So when I finally decided to leave, it it, and I think like this is a great way to be as an entrepreneur, honestly, because I'm always like, let's not destabilize anything.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: So I um basically picked up a client that was gonna guarantee me like$2,000 a month in revenue.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, okay, this is like enough that I can pay my mortgage, pay some bills, and like get out of here.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: So as soon as the contract on that client was signed, I just felt like I could kind of like leave that like part-time, almost full-time role and like really focus on the business.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: But I think sometimes we feel like we have to be one way or the other or choose X or Y.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: But our journey is not black and white.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: And I think for me, I live I continue to live in the gray area.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: And I think that's actually what makes it easier to like learn about ourselves and trust ourselves.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: So that, so there the identity shift for me actually was very slow at that time.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Cause I still didn't see myself as an entrepreneur.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: And it took a while to like really like get comfortable with it.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it's a journey, honestly.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: I love that though, because to me, as soon as you mentioned that um director role that it was part-time at the time, like that was a great bridge for you to, you know, have a have that a little bit of that security blanket.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: And then again, when you knew you had replaced that with this client, because there is something about building your business in a state of, you know, not not necessarily feeling abundance, I guess, but but you're definitely not in scarcity, right?
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: And I think it's so like there's I also believe in like being scrappy at the beginning and you do what it takes.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: And, you know, when you are in that position where you have to do it to pay the bills, like sometimes that's when you get most creative and you, you know, make the make maybe the riskiest decisions, but the necessary ones.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: So there's an element of that.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: But when you have a little bit more of that safety nest or security blanket, then you can make decisions from that place and it gives you a a chance to invest in yourself in a different way.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: So I think that's really important.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: And I think, like, I don't know, there's so much chatter on the internet about like being all in.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: And I do think at some point you do need to be all in.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: Probably not at the very beginning, though.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, yeah.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Like you can take your time to decide if something's for you or not.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, even when I started to kind of transition out of um like that agency role, and then I was working just like as a consultant, I'd have lots of companies like want to just hire me full time.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: And a lot of them I had one client who was like, What's the number?
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Like, we'll pay you whatever you want.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh God, do I believe at this point that I can just make more than whatever number I'm gonna give him?
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: I did because I said no, but that was the first time anyone had ever even like suggested that to me.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: What a massive test in your belief in yourself.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Literally.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, I can't wait to read your book, Katrina.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Um, I love this.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: And then and then you went on to build your PR agency, right?
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Tell us a little bit about that.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: And then again, made a big leap letting go of that.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, it's crazy.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: So I started, so I didn't like go out with the intentions of like building an agency, but I was like, okay, I'm a consultant, and then I needed to, I grew really fast.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Like the rhetoric online is always like build, like, grow to six figures, have your like six figure.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: And I did that like accidentally because I was not in the online space, like leading up to this.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: So I didn't even know about the world of like internet coaching.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: I didn't know about marketing funnels.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Like I was a true like marketing corporate gal.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: So none of that was like something I had ever been exposed to.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And so I'm building this agency and it's doing really well.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Um, and we're taking on clients, we're working with amazing clients.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: I'm building a small team and inside I'm dying because once again, I hate this shit.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: I'm like, why?
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Like I've started this business, but every day I like dread going to my computer.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: I dread opening my email.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Like, what?
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: And I realized it was because I didn't want to be an agency owner.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: I wanted to be famous.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: Like I wanted me, like I wanted to be the one that was like landing the press placements, going on podcasts, speaking on stages.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Like I was doing this for other people because I was so good at it.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: And it's what I had been doing in my corporate career for so long.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: But the highlight of my week when I would like work on my agency, I'd be working on all my clients.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: And then I'd carve out a little bit of time to work on my own marketing, like for my own business.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: And that was like the highlight.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I don't give a shit about doing everybody else's marketing.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: I just want to market myself.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: And so in that journey, I like built up this agency and then I started doing like coaching programs just off the side of my desk.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, it was a little extra revenue because people would have inevitably come to me and there are small business owners who couldn't necessarily afford like a big agency retainer.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: But I remember my very first PR coaching client, she actually gave me the idea because she was like, Listen, I can't afford an agency, but I think if you tell me what to do, I think I can go out there and like pitch myself.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: She had already like landed a feature in like the Globe and Mail at one point.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: And so she was like, I know that I just need a strategy and like some tools and and some information.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: And so she was the very first person that like came to me and planted that seed.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: And then that was when I was like, oh, that's my joy, like sharing this information and my experience with everybody else.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: So I went through a period of time where I was doing both, the agency and the coaching.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: And then I just got so burnt out and I was not doing anything well.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: I wasn't showing up on social media, and my revenue was like petering out.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Like, talk about the universe giving you signs.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: I'd wake up every single week for like a whole month, and I'd have a different client saying that they're like taking their PR in their marketing in-house, or uh they don't have the budget anymore.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: And so I started to run the numbers.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: This was like September 2024.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: And I was like, by January, I'm gonna have zero recurring revenue.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: So, like, what the actual F.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: And that's when I was like, okay, well, time to get scrappy.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Like you said, like at some point we've got to like take a bigger risk or like start, like, you know, find a different way to grow our business or or bring an income.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: So that's what I did.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, you know what?
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Forget trying to take on more agency clients.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Let's do another launch of my group program.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Let's like start showing up online, like as me, the PR coach, like forget about the agency.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: And in doing all of that, I also took out a business loan, um, which is not something that I ever thought I would do, but I needed cash because I was like, if I'm gonna grow a personal brand, I'm gonna need to travel, invest in content, maintain a team.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: And my recurring agency revenue was so low that I needed something.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: And I took a business loan to be able to fund that leap.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: And that was basically end of 2024 leading into 2025.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: And now we're here.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: And it all worked, but it was like the most that was my most tense time as an entrepreneur is like making that switch because at that point it wasn't even about leaving a job, it was about a business that was no longer working.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: And so I actually felt like I had failed.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: And then I was like, okay, but like clearly I'm not good at this.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: If like all of a sudden I went from like these high revenue months doing it and then it all falling apart.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Like that was the hardest part for me because I didn't know that that was an option.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: I didn't know the roller coaster of business, where like sometimes it's like a great month, sometimes it's not.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: I just assumed I was on like an upward trajectory, never coming down.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: So much here to get into.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: And I I love how you share that so honestly too, because I think it's so important.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: And so many people can relate to attaching like their value and worthiness to this corporate job or this business that they've built that they think has to be this way.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: And then when it shifts, and I have a lot of friends too that like are in a spot where, you know, I have one friend that went back to corporate after having an agency and had to go through that identity shift.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: And but like for you, knowing your design is a generator and just seeing the patterns of how you continued to follow what lit you up and know, like, okay, this one little bit of my week that I was focusing on building content for myself was when I was most really my favorite self.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: How can I how can I bring in more of that and step into more of that?
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: And then, yes, like listening to your intuition and also the universe sending you signs of, you know, letting some of the agency work dry up a little bit to force you to nudge you, like, okay, it's time.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: I couldn't believe it.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: Like every I actually write about this in my book where it was literally groundhog day.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Like, I could not believe the clients were just like falling off.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: Like, and that's hard on someone's confidence because you're like, am I doing something wrong?
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: But then there was a very tiny part of me that was also like really relieved.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: I was like, I don't really want to do your work anyways.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: So, like, this is probably great, but like, yeah, this is a tough one.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: And that's that, you know, shift of like, okay, actually, how can this be happening for me?
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: And what is this leading to in this next evolution?
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: So cool.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: So, okay, so we have to talk about what you're doing right now and how you are helping women build what you call these famous feeling personal brands, which I love.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Tell me a little bit more about what this means to you and just where this, where this like passion and fire came from.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's funny.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: The very first time I started using the word famous in my marketing was back when I still had my agency.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: And I had a coach like say to me, like, oh, you help people feel famous.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, no, no, no, like that is such a big thing to promise.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: But I did like the sounds of it.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: So I just started integrating it into my marketing.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: And at my core, like it was what I had always wanted for myself.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: So I I started like using it as a way to like entice other people to use PR in their business.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: So, you know, like, okay, if you want to feel famous for your work or famous for your business, use public relations.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: And a girlfriend and I were actually laughing about this because a year ago we were at a mastermind together in New York City, and I was still kind of talking about the like famous for your work, famous for your business kind of rhetoric.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: And in the last 12 months, that has also shifted because I'm like, oh no, like I don't want business owner fame.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: Like, I want like a real red carpet fame.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: And actually, I believe that most people building personal brands also want that too.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Because I honestly think if we want to be seen, heard, recognized, there is an element of us that wants that to be on a big stage, on a big platform, in front of a lot of people, even if like the top layer of us isn't ready to like fully admit that yet.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: And they say this being the person who, however many years ago now, five or six years ago, sat in front of someone and said, You have everything I want, but I actually don't want that.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: I've decided it's not for me.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: When I when I had that dinner with that woman who worked in the exact job that I wanted in the sports industry.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: So I now know that if I feel this way, so many other women feel this way.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: And it continues to come up with all of my clients where, you know, they come to me because they maybe are intrigued by the word fame, but they'll say, like, but like I don't want like that kind of fame.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: Like, I just want people to like know me in my industry, or like I just want to be able to increase my prices and feel like an authority.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: But lo and behold, each and every client of mine, up in like the six-month mark, is typically when they actually come back and say, you know what, Katrina, I actually want to be like full flat out famous.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Like, and I'm like, welcome.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: I knew that.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: You just had to admit it to yourself.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: So that really is what I do now.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: And I think, you know, I I run my coaching programs, but I also have events and podcasts and all of the things because I was someone who didn't believe I could ever have a business of scale.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: Like I had no social media presence when I left my uh corporate career.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: And I was really shy about showing up on social media when I started my business.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: So it's been a really interesting journey to go from that to now like really showing up and just actually talking about fame from a very vulnerable place.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: Um, because, you know, I'm a pretty conscious person.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: So I hold two things at once.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: I hold on to this idea that, like, yeah, most people really want to feel famous on some level, but be also still coming from a place of, ooh, this is a scary thing for me to say out loud and for me to want out loud.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: But I know that the more that I do that, the more it allows other people to admit that out loud too.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's so much I want to dig into here because I think there's something so big about that identity shift when you're actually like calling out the word famous, because obviously that's that is going to bring up a lot of shadow for people and a lot of the insecurities around what their definition of that word is.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: And I to me, I see it as more that identity shift as stepping into it versus like fame in the traditional sense.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: And I I think it's rooted in this core desire that so many of us have ultimately to feel seen, to feel understood, to feel worthy.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: And it's it's, you know, bringing that feeling like on a stage in this space.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: So how do you how do you describe that identity shift and like how do you work with your clients to work through that?
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: Cause I think you I'm I'm assuming, and you tell me, like you'll get a mix of the clients.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: You've got the clients that like are like, yeah, I want, I want to be the famous brand.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: And then you get the clients that are like, no, I don't actually want that.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: I just want this.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: And they're not, like you said, they don't have that full kind of layer to step into that next shift.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: So how do you help them navigate that?
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know what?
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: I have one client that comes to mind, which is like because she's on this journey right now.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: And when she came to me, she was already doing incredible things in her business.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: And she was, she knew that she needed a bigger platform to be able to like reach a larger audience, to have the authority, to have the credibility.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: And she came to me and was like, you know what, I want to do a TEDx talk and I want to do, you know, some of these like business owner type things.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, perfect, let's start there.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: And I I think because I've been on my own journey with this, where like I am not, I was never the person who just like flipped a switch and was like, one day I was this way and now I'm this way.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: I am very good at recognizing that most people also aren't like that.
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: So I don't expect any person to come to me.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: Most of my clients actually don't come to me straight out the gate, being like, I want to be famous.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: They come to me and they're like, I do need a push or I do need some expansion.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: And that's just where we start.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: And it's typically through securing those like kind of first few opportunities that really crack something open in you.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: I actually have um one of my clients today, just before this podcast recording, she just spoke at an event in Mexico.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: And the company that she was speaking for paid for all of her expenses.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: And she just sent me like a voice note this morning and was like, this was the best thing ever.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: This was exactly what I want to be doing.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: And the song Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys was like playing in the background.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: And she was like, This is so cheesy right now.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: But like, I feel like I am the girl on fire.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: Like, you are, you are, and it's through like identity shifts happen through action also.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: So through the action of her actually doing this speaking engagement, speaking on a stage in Mexico, having her flights, her hotels, everything paid for, that shifts something inside of you to show you that you can now go do the next big thing and that you do really want it.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: And so that's the beautiful part of public relations.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: And I think my background in PR is what makes my work so tangible because it's not just like go out there and embody fame.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: It's like, no, go out there and secure the opportunities that are actually going to make you feel famous and start there.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: And that's how you actually begin to see yourself differently and move differently because you've secured the opportunity that gives that to you.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: You don't just suddenly have the muscles.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: You need to go to the gym and build the muscles.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, totally.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: And and really understanding like what does that famous feeling mean to you and to the individual, and just like having your travel paid for and having, you know, that revenue, that speaking revenue, and like that green room kind of feeling of uh Luca was actually just joking about that and like painting my picture of what my my speaker green room would be, and it made me realize how well he knows me when he's picking out every little thing that they would need to have set up in my hotel room, you know.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: And I think there is something so powerful about that exercise to really tap into that identity.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: And I love that you went on that experience yourself first.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: I think that's so important.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: And I think ultimately that's when we know we're in our purpose because we're teaching and guiding and leading what we most needed on our own path.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: So to me, that's like, of course, and that's the alignment energy.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: I'd love to hear a little bit about how you yourself, like, was there a time when you felt like you were hiding and you were playing small and really not stepping into that famous feeling personal brand?
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I think the last couple months, no one would know this from the outside world.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: And I think that's when it becomes the most sneaky.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Um, because in the last couple of months, I have been sitting with this feeling of okay, I worked so hard to grow coaching programs, to be a coach.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: And then like I got to a place where I'm like, I don't enjoy, like I love the work and the programs, my work attracts people naturally.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: But what I don't love about the online coaching space is the need to do these like low-ticket offers, master classes, all these like things that I actually don't have capacity for.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: And I also don't love the like, and like I love money.
- 42:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's just put that out there.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: I love money.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: And like I think everybody should have it.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: I think if you want it, you got to go out there and get it.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: But what I don't love is building brands around money.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: And I started to feel really weird in the coaching space where like I'm like, okay, yes, there is, and in my work, I talk about building a six-figure personal brand and you know, fame and fortune.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: Like those are things that I'll share and I'll talk about, but I don't like how the online space talks about it.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: It makes it feel like I have to talk about it in a way that's not authentic to me.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: And then I got to a place where I'm like, okay, but maybe I'm failing as a coach because I'm not doing all of the like funnel things or the things that the masterminds will tell you to do.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: And then I was like, okay, it's because I'm building something different.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: It's because what I actually want is not to go be another one of these like top industry online coaches.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: Like, I want something entirely different.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: I want to eventually like host on TV.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: I want to eventually um be on like a reality TV show.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Like I want things that I know aren't in the realm of possibility for other people.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: And I'm just willing to like now claim that out loud.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: But it took me months to like feel comfortable saying it because then I got to a point where I'm like, well, if people think that I want something different, like maybe I'll never pick up another client again.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: And then where does my revenue?
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Come from.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: And that's the spiral I started to go go in.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: So yeah, my biggest like playing spa moment has been over the last couple months.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: And I think on the outside, no one ever would have guessed that.
- 44:14SPEAKER_00: But inside, I was like, I'm still defaulting to like, where's my next client coming from?
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: When the question I really should have been asking was, where's my next like$25,000 speaking gig coming from?
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: Or where's my next brand partnership coming from?
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: But because I got to a place where I'm like, oh, but like the coaching is the thing that got me to where I was.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: I was staying in that arena when I was supposed to be in a different arena entirely.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: So it sneaks up on you the more you grow, I think.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but then I can look at the muscle that you continue to build to know that what got you here isn't what's gonna get you there.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 44:57SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: And also just the reminder that, you know, the strategy, and I'm coming from a marketing background too, where I and someone who like was so strategic in the early years of how I scaled my business, but it really is like 5%.
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: And I'm not saying that it's not important and there's not a place for it.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: I absolutely like it, there is a necessity there, but really like the 95% is around the energetics of it, the identity of it, the like mindset work of it.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: And I know there's a lot of controversy between these two worlds online, but I think it you and I can both speak to probably leaning so heavily into the strategy, the masculine, or are feeling pulled into that world and feeling like in the shoulds, which I think comes natural in the marketing space that you get pulled into that.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: And it can kind of really pull you away from the alignment of where you're supposed to be, and just really knowing that like you can create money in so many different ways.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: And we're not all made to create it the same way.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: No, and that you know what's funny?
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: This morning I woke up and I was like doing a little meditation, and then I was like, I'm going to write down all the things that I like want right now.
- 46:15SPEAKER_00: And they were like, like, if someone else was to see that list, they would be like like jaw on the floor.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: But to me, it felt entirely like in my reality.
- 46:27SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, well, if that's what you really want right now, Katrina, how do you have to act today to like bring those things to fruition?
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: And it's not sitting at the computer trying to create another like sales page or like any of that.
- 46:44SPEAKER_00: It's just going about my day, like being excited about this list I just created and like really being in my joy around that.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: But I think that almost seems too easy.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what trips people up because it's like, well, how could it, how could it be that easy?
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: How could you just like exist and be happy and be excited and dream big and then get paid for that?
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: But anytime I've like welcomed in an amazing brand partnership or large sum of money, it has happened easily.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: Like it has been the the easiest thing I've ever received.
- 47:25SPEAKER_00: And it's remembering that.
- 47:27SPEAKER_00: But until you can like experience that, it's a hard thing to get on board with.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: To build the proof.
- 47:34SPEAKER_01: But there's a huge layer of it of doing it before you have the proof, which I want to talk to you about too.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: Though everyone, please, if you have one takeaway from this episode, go and create your list of your deepest, biggest desires.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: I I did that actually recently as well.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: I think it was aligned with like the last new moon or something.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: There was a big energy there.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: And I really, I mean, I could get really woo on this.
- 47:59SPEAKER_01: I won't get too deep into it, but I really believe we're also shifting into a whole new paradigm in terms of how we approach work.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: And we're burning down this old paradigm that around like it having to be this very specific structure and like this whole, you know, the security of the job that you have to hold on to, this old way of doing things and shifting to this really abundant, wealthy energy of stepping into what lights you up and being you at your most authentic favorite essence.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: That's who you are most magnetic.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: And that is exactly when you attract these incredible opportunities.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: And we're just on the tip of the iceberg and we're gonna continue to see the proof.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: But the people who are gonna lead this are gonna be the ones willing to go first without seeing the proof.
- 48:52SPEAKER_00: Literally.
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: It's funny that we're having, I think I've like processed so much during this recording because I've had a week where like I have made like some substantial financial investments like back into my business.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, this feels stretchy.
- 49:13SPEAKER_00: This feels like, oh God, like, you know, I I'm still for the for the audience to to just take this in.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: I'm still paying down my business loan.
- 49:23SPEAKER_00: It's not like, you know, I manifested that shit away.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: Like I make payments to it every single week.
- 49:28SPEAKER_00: Um, and I'm pretty much reinvest everything that I earn back into my business right now.
- 49:34SPEAKER_00: But um the investments get bigger and bigger, like the more that you like want to like grow and and evolve.
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: And so I was like, okay, like a year ago I couldn't fathom investing this much back into the business.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: Now it's like stretchy and like gives me a little bit of like a feeling, but I'm like, no, this is what I need to do to grow.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: And I think there's not always gonna be proof.
- 50:01SPEAKER_00: And I think there's always like, you know, when it comes to like the next level, the proof of the next level is never going to exist before you like take any sort of action step.
- 50:13SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's really like a specific story.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: I would I know you have many around what changed when you decided to invest in your visibility before that outcome was guaranteed.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: Ooh, okay.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: Here's a good one.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: So last year, um, there's like this online magazine that like does these like magazine features and they put you on a billboard in Times Square and like you get to go to an event and all of that.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: I think they're still doing them, but at the time it was like kind of a brand new thing.
- 50:48SPEAKER_00: And the investment at the time was like$3,500 USD.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: So like$5,000 Canadian.
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: And that was last summer, so 2025.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: And at that point in my business, so I'd I've been like six months into growing my coaching programs with the help of this business loan.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: The business loan is big, and I had already invested so much money into traveling to different events every single month, speaking at different events, like the credit card was being swiped constantly.
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: And then this investment came across my desk.
- 51:23SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I have to do it.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: Like there wasn't uh, there was no like saying no as an option.
- 51:33SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay,$3,500 USD, that's a tough pill to swallow, but I I could see, and this is where strategy is the 5%, based on everything I had in the calendar, kind of leading up to when this billboard and all these things would go live.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: I'm like, that's like a PR campaign.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: And when we think about celebrities or anyone that's ever done like a book launch, a movie premiere, anything, there is a launch campaign that includes billboards, uh, magazines, all that's that is PR.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: And I was like, this is gonna be like my own PR campaign.
- 52:11SPEAKER_00: But like, holy shit, I am gonna have to invest another, like and not a small amount, anything under a thousand dollars that at that point I could stomach, but I'm like$3,500 USD.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: But I knew that I couldn't say no.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: I knew that if I said no, I would be like showing and telling myself and the universe that I don't think that something like that is for me.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: And I knew it was for me.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: And so there's no like really glamorous story here.
- 52:38SPEAKER_00: I put that thing on a credit card and like paid it off honestly, a couple months ago, because I was just like, let's put like$500 towards this every every month, and I paid it off.
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: But me being on that billboard and like standing in Times Square, seeing myself on it, it felt really normal.
- 52:58SPEAKER_00: Like it didn't feel like holy shit, I'm on a billboard.
- 53:01SPEAKER_00: I'm like, yeah, obviously I'm on a billboard in Times Square because look at everything that I've done.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: Look at all the risks that I took, look at what I'm willing to, you know, show up for in my business.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: At that point, I was like just about to host like my biggest event at the time, which was like 60 people.
- 53:19SPEAKER_00: Um like I was doing all of the things.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: And I expected to have this different reaction to like seeing myself, and I didn't.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: I was just like, there she is.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: Of course she is.
- 53:32SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: That raised the baseline of everything that I can expect from myself, but also invest in myself from that point forward.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: And like, you know, it was interesting because I was thinking about this story last night as I swiped my credit card on a very uh big purchase.
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: And I was like, well, you know what?
- 53:51SPEAKER_00: I paid back the last thing.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, was a fraction of this new thing.
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: But at that point, like money is just money.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I showed myself I could make a big investment into something that I knew would raise my baseline and I paid it back.
- 54:03SPEAKER_00: And so here we go again.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: And this is not financial advice, but this is how I have built trust with myself to do the thing.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: Cause I'm like, I know I will pay my, I will pay it back.
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: I know I will, but I had to take the action to do it because if I didn't, and this is the this is what I hold in in in every single decision I make.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: I'm like, if I say no to this, I'm telling myself that I don't think I can make it work and that it will not work for me.
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: And I never ever want to put that thought inside my head.
- 54:35SPEAKER_00: So we swipe a credit card.
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: So powerful.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: I love that contrast between who that like then encouraged you to step into it.
- 54:45SPEAKER_01: Was that version of yourself who actually felt that of course moment where it didn't feel like, oh my God, you know, who am I to be on this billboard?
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: It was like, this is normal, this is the new normal, this is the new baseline, versus being aware of what how actually would have been detrimental to you and your brand and your growth to play small in that moment and say no to yourself.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: I think we we don't think a lot about the cost of saying no along with the cost of saying yes, right?
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: Like there's the cost of the investment of saying yes, the$3,000, but what's the cost of saying no to this opportunity that you feel is so right?
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: Literally not set you back.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: And I just try to keep that top of mind.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: You know, I say this having another like big invoice to pay in my inbox right now.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: So we're like speaking to the version of myself that's like, we gotta go pay that after this.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: Cause it's like, yeah, every time we say no, when it our intuition is like, no, you need to do this, then we're literally closing a door when like paying that invoice, making that investment and trusting that it's the right move is actually gonna open up so much more.
- 56:03SPEAKER_00: But we have to move, we have to take the action.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: And it, and it, and like your story shows, it's not going from making the$3,000 investment when you're just starting out.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: You know, it's building the safety, building the security, build raising your baseline, you know, stretching your capacity and your identity to get to that point.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: And it's one step at a time.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: And we're not talking about going zero to a hundred here, you know, we're we're talking about pacing yourself.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: I I'd love to, you know, before we wrap up, talk about the difference between, I think there's a lot of misconception around personal brand.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: And a lot of people think it's more this like aesthetic kind of this look of what your personal brand is online, but they don't understand the opportunity side of it.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: So can you speak to really what separates a personal brand that just looks good versus one that's actually creating opportunities?
- 56:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:59SPEAKER_00: So this is, and I think the personal brand word gets convoluted because we've come from this like age of influencers where it was an aesthetic, a perfectly curated home, like all of those things.
- 57:12SPEAKER_00: Whereas now, personal brand really has nothing to do with how something looks.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: It's what is the story, the golden thread, the point of view that's woven between everything that you do.
- 57:25SPEAKER_00: And people sometimes get a little bit sticky around this because they're like, but what if I don't want to talk about that thing in six months?
- 57:32SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Well, you're a human, so your personal brand will evolve.
- 57:36SPEAKER_00: But the way that you build audience cohesion and engagement around that is by taking people on that journey with you.
- 57:42SPEAKER_00: So this is something that I'm really cautious of doing right now in my own brand because I am making this transition to, okay, like I don't want people to see me as a coach.
- 57:51SPEAKER_00: I want to be this like media personality.
- 57:53SPEAKER_00: I want to be seen a little bit differently.
- 57:56SPEAKER_00: Like I like I'm going through it.
- 57:58SPEAKER_00: So I'm taking people on that journey of like, this is my transition.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: This is what I used to believe.
- 58:05SPEAKER_00: This is what I believe now.
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: This is, you know, what old Katrina did to get here.
- 58:11SPEAKER_00: And this is what new Katrina wants to focus on.
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: So your personal brand is really like your story.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: And it's how you convey that to your audience for them to understand like what the importance of the work that you do is, um, depending on what you sell, whether it's a service-based business or product-based business, doesn't really matter.
- 58:30SPEAKER_00: Your story is what's going to have people invested in that and like paying attention.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: And so to me, especially now because like AI is so popular, it's hard to actually like even decipher like what's AI content versus what's real.
- 58:45SPEAKER_00: Like the personal brand is going to be the most important asset any founder can have because AI doesn't have a story.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: AI didn't have all of the like emotional, traumatic, life-changing experiences that us as humans have.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: So that becomes the biggest differentiator.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: And I think if we like people think that personal brand, especially in a business owner sense, is just like, well, this is my perspective on my industry.
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: But I actually don't even believe that that's enough anymore.
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: I think it's got to be so much more.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: You've got to be willing to like really put it all out there.
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: And that's what's going to build trust with people and engagement and all of those things.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: But vulnerability on the internet is like the way sum it up.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: And people either like crumble under that or like thrive.
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I think that's that's where it's going.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: I'm I wholeheartedly agree.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: And really, that's why, you know, it starts with the story, and it's so important to get the clarity in your around your story and have the belief around your story and knowing your story can evolve too.
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: And like, but what is that transformation arc that you're taking them through?
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: How does that then tie into your business?
- 59:58SPEAKER_01: There's the strategy part.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: And just how do you continue to show up in that way and truly embody that and then therefore become this magnet for these opportunities?
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: And then what is that next step?
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: Like, can you speak to what that looks like in terms of converting that into this revenue-driving personal brand that, you know, what what are the opportunities that you have achieved?
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: You've shared for a little bit yourself, but for your clients, what can that look like for people?
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: So my expertise is really in what I like to call building a six-figure personal brand.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_00: So, you know, once someone has like an established business, established service offering, like you know, you can get clients.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: The next thing isn't like doing more, it's monetizing what you already have.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: So most business owners eventually get a Substack or get a podcast or write a book or want to speak, and all of those things are able to be monetized.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: So it's just a matter of like looking at the other things that you're producing as a founder and now getting strategic about how can I bring like a revenue-driving component into this.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_00: So here's a really great example.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: Because in the fall, I'm gonna go on like a book tour for my for the launch of my book.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_00: And I am right now working with my team on like, I want a title sponsor, not just for the event, but for the tour.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: Because this is work I'm already doing.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_00: There will be content of me like sharing about the tour, how I prepare for it, you know, all the different stops and touch points and all of that.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: And like, there is a very seamless way to integrate a brand into this that feels good for a brand, where they're now like getting this very like authentic integration into someone else's story.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_00: But then it's good for me too, because the tour is something I'm gonna do regardless.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_00: So now adding on a brand partner just allows me to increase the revenue generating capabilities of this project I'm already doing.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: And so that is what people kind of like misread about a person brand.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_00: They think it's like something like now you have an entire separate project, but you really don't.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_00: It's like you have you take the elements you already have and like really now look for the opportunities to integrate brand partners or speaking or ticket sales or whatever it is into what you're already doing to drive more revenue.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: So yeah, yeah, I love that.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: It's really being able to see the opportunities that are already there and such a good reminder that it's not about taking on more and doing more.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: I I needed this advice myself this past week.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: I was like still thinking of the next thing and like I'm in that phase too, where like I'm I'm you know, investing in building out the personal brand.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_01: And we have to pull ourselves back, especially as a manny gen from like the shiny carrot of the next thing and look at okay, but actually let's pull back to the foundation.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: You know, what can we monetize now?
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: Where are the where's the opportunity with what we've already created?
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: And if you're having trouble to see that for yourself, that's your opportunity to work with someone who can help and you know, see those blind spots and recognize those and pull those from you.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: And then think of what you're saving by investing in that support versus trying a million things that don't actually need your time and energy right now and aren't the best way to be investing.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, literally.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_00: And I think like we feel like we need to figure it all out on our own.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_00: And I think when it's our personal brand specifically, we think it's inherent.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: So, like you should just know what the next step is.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: Or a lot of the time the misconception is like, well, I shouldn't need to like invest in a business that like just relies on me.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_00: But a lot of the time, like that's when I feel like the investment is the most important because we downplay like how big of a business we can actually build off of our personal brand.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_00: Like our personal brand is just as legitimate of a business as anything else that we create.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_00: Like, look at all, look at like the Kim Kardashians of the world.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_00: She got to where she was because of love it or hate it, her personal brand.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_00: So that's the most important thing to remember.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_00: It's just like any other business venture.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, before we wrap, I just have to ask a little bit more of a touchy-feely question.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, we talked about vulnerability and the vulnerability that comes with visibility, but I really believe like there's such an underlying layer here that's so healing in that journey.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: And so I would just love for from your perception, if you could share or from your experience, like what has visibility healed in you or your vulnerability and and really putting yourself out there in your personal brand?
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_00: That is a touchy heely question.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_00: I will I'm always like, am I gonna cry when I say this?
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: I think for me, it is the realization that like it is so okay to want what you want.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_00: Like if you want to be famous, that is 120% okay.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_00: If you want to make a lot of money, also 120% okay.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_00: Like whatever it is deep inside of you that you really, really want, if you can find the courage and like make the act of bravery to tell people and to share it out loud, that is going to literally change everything for you.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_00: Like the most amazing things have happened as I've just gotten a little bit more unhinged and open in how I talk about my own desires.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_00: Like, that's when you really open up the floodgates.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_00: And we, I think we get scared of like people like judging us or like thinking that's stupid or that's lame.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_00: And I will be honest, I the the negative feedback that has come back to me in my three years of like really doing this out loud.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_00: Like, I one time I got a troll on my like Instagram reel.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: Like, that's it.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: And that's not to say that.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: aren't people who i'm 100% certain talk about me behind my back but i actually don't care about those people um because that's a low vibe energy that i just don't get on board with but people very very rarely almost never say to my face like that's stupid for wanting that or like you shouldn't want that and i think that was my biggest fear what will people say well they haven't said anything the people will say oh my god thank you for sharing this i feel activated or i feel i feel triggered to like go take action and so by saying the thing that like you like maybe feel shame around or feel like you want to keep closed off that's probably the thing that's gonna unlock like everything you want and it's not gonna be like the reception and people's reaction is not gonna be what you think it is it's gonna be better oh my god yes what a perfect way to end and just the reminder too that no one who's ahead of you in to living the life and business that you want is going to judge you for wanting your desires out loud and calling them in so okay you you touched on this a little bit at the beginning but just to wrap things up tell us who is your favorite self in this season what does she feel like for you oh my gosh no this one's I'm like okay we kind of we're gonna get through this entire episode with no tears.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_00: My favorite self is Katrina who both really believes that the possibilities are endless.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_00: Carly I'm gonna cry um and like that's not an easy believing that the possibilities are endless is not something I fully embody all the time.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_00: Like I want everybody to understand that because that would be a crazy thing for me to come up on here and say like I just wake up every day and think that it's all happening.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_00: Like I don't I wish I could be like that level of um delusional but I'm not I am pretty grounded in reality most of the time but my favorite self is the person who despite all of that still moves like the possibilities are endless anyways and she wrote the list of all of the things that she really really wants this morning and she believes that each and every one of those things is going to come true because if you want it and if you take action towards it, that's when it all happens.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_01: So yeah so good so beautiful and it starts with this best selling book tell us where and when we can get our hands on it.
