- 0:07The Kansas City Royals faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for a Sunday afternoon game on July 24th, 1983.
- 0:14The Royals entered the game with a 500 record under manager Dick Hauser.
- 0:18The Yankees, managed by Billy Martin, were fighting it out in the AL East with a 52-40 record.
- 0:24This is the infamous pine tar game, named for the controversial ending that involved Billy Martin protesting the condition of George Brett's bat.
- 0:31The protest was later overturned, and we've included the audio from the continuation ending that occurred nearly three weeks later at the end of this broadcast.
- 0:39The recording is from the audio of the local sports channel in New York television broadcast, featuring announcers Frank Messer and Phil Rizzuto.
- 0:47Well, the ballgame just about ready to start. Quickly the lineup for visiting team, the Royals, Willie Wilson leading off, New Orleans, Washington batting second,
- 0:59George Brett third, Hal McCrae fourth, Amos Otis batting fifth, batting sixth, the first baseman John Waffin.
- 1:06Then we'll get Leon Robertson left, Frank White at second, Don Slott catching, and we already have shown you, but black, the left-handed pitcher for the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:16Willie, here are the Yankee lineup, Bert Campanier, Greg Nettles, Lou Pennella, Don Baylor, Dave Winfield playing center field batting fifth, Steve Kemp, Steve Balboni, Roy Smalley, Rick Cerrone, and Shane Raleigh's first pitch is a foul out of play by Wilson.
- 1:31Wilson batting a 280, a home run, 20 runs batted in.
- 1:35This is the final meeting this season between the Yankees and Kansas City, meeting number 12, the Yankees have won six and the Royals five.
- 1:46Shane Raleigh, Bobby Mercer has pitched well in his two starts against Kansas City in Kansas City. He beat them both times.
- 1:53He's won both games. He's 2-0 against Kansas City and seems to have them pretty well tamed. We'll see what happens today.
- 2:02He's done it mostly with fastball. Yeah, well, Shane, if he has any problems, I think it's more or less timing problems.
- 2:10He likes to pitch fast and he likes to get the ball and just turn around and throw it again.
- 2:16It's been very impressive this year, even though he has a 9-8 record.
- 2:20Count remains one ball and two strikes on Willie Wilson. It'll be Wilson, UL Washington, and George Brett against Shane Raleigh.
- 2:29You know what happens when John Amarante sings the national anthem. Yeah, we get 5 pounds worth.
- 2:37You got to work out another week. Well, Rizzuto always gets the cannolis and then he sort of distributes them up here to the rest of our people.
- 2:45Here's a breaking ball that Wilson fouls off his left foot, and that smarts a bit.
- 2:54Hey, Willie Wilson wearing New Balance shoes. You don't see too many of those baseball spikes.
- 3:01I didn't even know New Balance made baseball spikes. They make a good running shoe.
- 3:08That's a change up. Looks like there's room for Balboni and foul territory off first.
- 3:14Went away.
- 3:21Where New Balance tennis shoes once in a while. Pro players wear them all.
- 3:27A lot of shoes around today. A competition of area. UL Washington, the shortstop. He's batting 233 with two home runs and 25 runs batted in.
- 3:39Got some nice syrup today from the Don Chacon family. It's a coin from up in Burlington, Vermont. A lot of Yankee fans up there.
- 3:49Washington takes the strike.
- 4:01Lifetime Raleigh with five wins, two losses against the Royals. That'll be out of play. No chance. It'll make the, uh, predict two strikes on UL Washington as we look at Rick Serrone.
- 4:13By the way, Butch Weininger has a pool groin and he probably will not play unless there's an emergency this afternoon.
- 4:22I don't think that, excuse me, Bill, I don't think that Shane Raleigh had really reached his full potential as a pitcher.
- 4:28I think he's still learning and we take a look at Butch Weininger there who has that slightly poor groin.
- 4:35And he caught him looking. A good fastball. Evidently, Washington either looked for a breaking ball or the ball away and he got the ball on the inside corner.
- 4:45Take a look at it here. It was a fastball that started on the inside part of the plate and was stayed on the inside part. I think that missed.
- 4:52I think that missed. Well, when you got two strikes on you, you can't, uh, you got to become a defensive hitter up there. If anything close, you got to be hacking at it.
- 5:00I think he caught you out Washington off guard. He might have also got Tim McLeod the home plate umpire off guard.
- 5:05Whatever it is, it's a big strikeout. McLeod behind the plate, Drew Cobol at first, Joe Brakeman at second and Nick Bremigan umpiring at third base.
- 5:13And this is George Brett. He's hitting three fifty two nineteen home runs and sixty two runs batted in.
- 5:19George is having a big home run year this year. He's got nineteen home runs. We take a look at it on our screen.
- 5:26He usually hits about fifteen home runs and hits somewhere in the three eighty category as far as average is concerned.
- 5:31So he's having a big home run year this year. Yankees have pitched him away much of the series and he hasn't adjusted.
- 5:37He sort of reached for the ball away instead of charging out there and getting it.
- 5:43Just like that. Yeah. I'll tell you what. In Yankee Stadium, there's no other place to pitch George Brett than away and let him hit it out there towards that four thirty sign.
- 5:52We can see George. Well, he has good weight shift and he would even on that was a change up and I'll speed pitch.
- 5:58He would ride on it. One and two on Brett to watch nobody on just underway from the stadium.
- 6:06Shane Raleigh against the Bud Black and that's a base on that curve ball and Brett gets his base.
- 6:15He'll hold it first base. That's the game first hit. Well, that pitch there also was a change up.
- 6:24But our breaking pitch, excuse me, and it didn't break down and away from George Brett.
- 6:31It just kind of hung up out over the plate and George just lines it right into center field.
- 6:37Here's how McCray, the designated hitter, he's batting three twenty seven and that'll.
- 6:44In time, put out five three and the side is retired.
- 6:48No runs a base hit and one man left on base at the end of one half inning of play.
- 6:54The Royals nothing. The Yankees are coming up.
- 7:06Oh, back of the stadium, but Black will be pitching to the Yankees here in the bottom half of the first setting on the scoreboard.
- 7:15Nice league game. You the Montreal leading Houston to nothing early in the ballgame
- 7:20and the Giants leading Pittsburgh one to nothing in the fifth inning.
- 7:29Well, Billy Yankees have got Greg Meadows back in the lineup now, so we assume that his bruised shoulder is all right.
- 7:37Still have three people on the disabled list. Ken Griffey, Willie Randolph and Rudy May.
- 7:42I think they've all been working out and they all with possible exception.
- 7:47Rudy May might be ready to go, but their roster problems. Yeah, they got some more roster problems.
- 7:52Also, Andre Robertson has a slightly bruised right hand and Oscar Gamble has a slight growing pool, too.
- 8:01So that'll gamble off the bench.
- 8:06Oscar, get on me for that. Yeah, so what I needed. Oh, you're right.
- 8:09Whatever that updates all the injuries on the Yankees. Oscar certainly would like more playing time when he plays.
- 8:14He contributes. I don't blame him.
- 8:16Here's Bert Campanaro's leading off against.
- 8:19But Black, we're playing the first inning of a scoreless ballgame.
- 8:23Campanaro's batting three forty seven, no home runs and six runs batted in.
- 8:29Bert did a fine job last night of filling in a third base for Greg Meadows.
- 8:33Here's Oscar. He's always happy.
- 8:36Happier, though, when he's getting a chance to swing the bat.
- 8:40It's a ball and a strike on Campanaro's.
- 8:43You got to give Billy Martin a lot of credit for giving Bert Campanaro an opportunity to play baseball again.
- 8:49What an asset he has been to the Yankees. He's hitting three forty seven now.
- 8:53He's played like it. He's about twenty three years old.
- 8:57Says he loves the game. Figures he could play three or four more years.
- 9:01Well, I don't know ways playing right now. I wouldn't see why not.
- 9:04He's an old fashioned type player. He gives himself up. He doesn't play for Campanaro's.
- 9:08He plays for the team. He plays to the team and he plays to win.
- 9:16You know, Washington has good range and he throws out Campanaro's.
- 9:20That's a six to three put out for the first out.
- 9:25We'll take a look at it again, Bill. That's a fastball up and in on Campy.
- 9:29Kind of got in on him a little bit.
- 9:31But Black makes a big leap, but could not come up with it.
- 9:34Was not hit that hard, but you know, Washington right behind the second base bag goes ahead and makes an easy play of it.
- 9:40Well, there's one down. Here's Greg Nettles, Yankee captain and third baseman hitting two seventy one with twelve home runs and forty one runs batted in.
- 9:49At Montreal Houston game in the third inning, it's Montreal to Houston. Nothing.
- 9:55Ball one to Nettles. Nettles missed a couple of games with a sore shoulder as we look at the Yankee bench.
- 10:03Believe Martin to the forefront. Got a peek at his cap.
- 10:10Two balls, no strikes on Nettles.
- 10:15I see Robin Yout will be lost for several days to the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 10:19He has a lower back strain that will not help the Brewers.
- 10:23Brewers right now game behind the Yankees in the American League East.
- 10:30See if Brett has room in foul territory. Looks like he does.
- 10:34Right on the top step of the dugout for out number two.
- 10:38Nettles fouls out to Royal third baseman George Brett.
- 10:44Got under. Yeah, he got under and he was just a little bit behind it.
- 10:47And when you do that, you either hit a weak round ball towards the left side of the infield or you do what he did there.
- 10:54He pops the ball up.
- 10:56Here's Luke Pennella batting a 3 0 6 to home run 16 runs batted in a little went 2 for 3 last night and he scored the Yankees first run.
- 11:10Everybody singing Pennella's praises for the job he's doing with the Yankee hitters this year.
- 11:15They ought to because he's helped a lot of those guys out in the Yankee lineup as far as hitting is concerned.
- 11:23Lou doesn't mind talking hitting and he knows a lot about it.
- 11:26And Pennella takes a strike.
- 11:28You know, if you're a guy that's a good hitter and knows a lot about hitting, not a lot of times you can, you know, convey the words to another hitter that they'll understand.
- 11:38But Luke Pennella has that heart.
- 11:41It's a ball on the strike on Pennella.
- 11:43There's Yogi Berra, the Yankee first base coach and Hall of Famer over third base.
- 11:48Don Zimmer.
- 11:53You think Lou will ever manage?
- 11:55Lou said he doesn't want to hang around baseball when it's over.
- 11:58I don't believe him.
- 11:59But that's what he said.
- 12:01I don't believe him either.
- 12:02You think he'd be a good manager?
- 12:05Yeah, because I think he he's tough enough.
- 12:08He'll he's a yell at a screamer.
- 12:10And then for the most part, those guys seem to make better managers.
- 12:14They don't know if he's going to hit him with the batter or hit him with the fister.
- 12:19Two and two on Pennella.
- 12:21We've got some of our Maratis Penolis up here.
- 12:25Bobby Mercer.
- 12:26Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:28Those things away from me, please.
- 12:29Give Jimmy Hunter some.
- 12:32Three balls on the strike on Pennella.
- 12:37Do that.
- 12:38Nobody on no score in the bottom of the first.
- 12:42That'll be out of play.
- 12:46You know, even though the Yankees have a lot of injuries, Bill, and
- 12:51with the depth and the bench that they have, they could just keep putting guys in there and never hurt themselves.
- 12:56That's what they've done.
- 12:57That is a that's a good point for a strong ballclub because in order to play 162 games and
- 13:07win the championship, you've got to have a lot of bench strength.
- 13:10The Yankees do have that.
- 13:12Well, I feel that in September that should be a big plus.
- 13:15Oh, absolutely.
- 13:16And nobody should complain about being tired.
- 13:19Bread at third and Pirellas out and that'll retire the side.
- 13:24Three up, three down at the end of one.
- 13:26The Yankees nothing and Kansas City.
- 13:29Nothing.
- 13:33You know, Bill, eight of nine wins that Shane Raleigh has have been complete games.
- 13:42He's a strong he's a strong young gentleman and he seems like he can just throw all day long.
- 13:48He has a lot of pitches during a ballgame to live arm.
- 13:52Otis takes a strike.
- 13:53We're in the second inning, no score.
- 13:55It'll be Otis Wapen and Leon Roberts against Shane Raleigh.
- 14:02Did you get that can only down?
- 14:04Yeah.
- 14:07Otis batting 270 to home runs 24 runs batted in and a strike to Amazonas normally gets a good cut at left handers.
- 14:17Sometimes against right handers, he'll back off a little bit, but he likes left handers.
- 14:31Almost started that right hand up.
- 14:34Well, he went halfway.
- 14:37Yeah, I don't count.
- 14:38No McClellan almost started up.
- 14:40Now watch, watch that right shoulder.
- 14:44Watch that right shoulder.
- 14:47Yeah, he had it halfway and a bitch got on him a little bit over the Yankee bench.
- 14:54And good play by Balboni, Balboni with a good play of first.
- 15:03Glad to see Steve make that play.
- 15:05The other day, a guy hit a ball past Balboni that hurt the Yankees.
- 15:08Well, that's kind of such a bad hop.
- 15:09This was one of those do or die plays and it's just a one hop shot right to the left of Steve Balboni and he dives and makes an outstanding play.
- 15:18I think it didn't feel no matter what the situation is, it's got to always feel the ball is going to be hit to him.
- 15:24And I think sometimes if a right handed batters up a first baseman has a tendency to relax a little bit.
- 15:30You can't do that.
- 15:31What you're saying is that you've got to be ready at all times.
- 15:34Yes.
- 15:35John Waffin and he takes low ball one.
- 15:39Throw a little bit upset with that call. Well, you know, Balboni is a big guy, but he had good reaction on that play.
- 15:48Two balls, no strikes on Waffin. He's batting 272 with one home run and 24 runs batted in.
- 15:56The Yankees on a hot streak with eight of their last nine and they're eight and two on his home stand.
- 16:02Three balls, no strikes on Waffin.
- 16:11And it's three and one.
- 16:13You know, if Shane Riley has a problem, it could be that he goes inconsistent too many times and he just hadn't figured out a way yet that when he is inconsistent that he can work his way out of a jam that he gets himself in.
- 16:25And it'll happen normally one time a ballgame. You'll have one bad inning.
- 16:29Bad inning.
- 16:32That'll be out of place.
- 16:33Rone giving chase, but it's well back in the seats.
- 16:37Three and two on John Waffin.
- 16:39That's the reason I don't think that Shane Riley has reached his potential because as soon as you know he learns to work himself out of those jams when he becomes inconsistent.
- 16:47We'll take a look at Gaylord Perry.
- 16:50The guy that I call the old boy.
- 16:52That's why you're up here.
- 16:53Right. He almost drove me nuts.
- 16:56This guy.
- 16:59About three quarters away.
- 17:00Gone.
- 17:05This is with the slider and that's the first walk of the ballgame Waffin at first base.
- 17:11You got to really watch Wathen.
- 17:13He looks like he cannot run, but he's an excellent base runner and he's an excellent base dealer.
- 17:19They want to keep him. They want to make Wathen stop at first base because he takes like a running jump off of first base.
- 17:26Watching him start walking off there and.
- 17:30He's stolen 18 bases in 22 attempts this year.
- 17:33He's usually when he tries to steal he usually is in motion before the pitchers even throw the ball to the plate.
- 17:40This is Leon Roberts the left fielder who broke up Guidry's shutout bid last night with his third home run of the year.
- 17:46And he had an idea of buddy.
- 17:49But he got the bat back so it's a ball. What an Owen Roberts.
- 17:53Martin doesn't like that call.
- 17:55No I think Billy thought that he made an attempt to but we'll take a look at it here.
- 17:59And yeah he kept it down there a long time.
- 18:03That was one of those halfway deals again.
- 18:06So we'll give.
- 18:08We'll give the empire.
- 18:09How to play. Oh and two.
- 18:14Well I tell you if they only missed two all game they've done a good job. Yep.
- 18:19They have a lot of calls to make.
- 18:25Raleigh making sure Wathen stops at first base.
- 18:28You've got to stop him over there because if you don't he'll just keep walking off that bag and the next thing you know he's gone.
- 18:38And a base it up the middle as Wathen was on the move and he'll go on to third base.
- 18:45And the Royals on a Leon Roberts single have runners at first and third base with one away.
- 18:53Look like a hit run to me Bill we'll take a look at it.
- 18:55Wathen takes off on the pitch and the ball is out over the plate and Leon Roberts.
- 19:02I'm almost positive it was a hit run and they executed it well.
- 19:06And here's Frank White the second base.
- 19:08He's hitting 246 with six home runs and 46 runs batted in.
- 19:13We're in the second inning and the Royals are threatening and the change up the strike.
- 19:22No score in the game.
- 19:25Yankees would like to turn to here on Frank White.
- 19:30And that's out of play two strikes on White.
- 19:37Weather holding down the crowd somewhat.
- 19:41First two games drew in excess of forty thousand each.
- 19:44This game might be a little smaller the crowd.
- 19:50One ball and two strikes on White.
- 19:54Yankees and Kansas City have always had a pretty good rivalry.
- 19:58Many times they played championship games and the Yankees used to kind of dominate them in championship games until 1980.
- 20:06That could be two. There is one.
- 20:08Smalley better hurry did not make it a run score.
- 20:14Wathen scores and the Royals lead one to nothing on the four side at second base.
- 20:19Well Frank White has good speed and even though this ball was hit sharply to Burt Campaneras.
- 20:24He coming up with the ball and going to go ahead and make the first play to Roy Smalley at second.
- 20:30But with the speed of Frank White he beats out that play which allows a run to score and white to pick up a run batted in his forty seventh of the year and the Royals lead one to nothing.
- 20:43And that'll bring on Don Slott to catch a two thirty nine hitter and he takes the ball.
- 20:50I think a hitter knows that when he's in a double play situation with a guy at third base I think in the back of their mind they know if they hit the double play they don't get that RBI makes them hustle down that line a little more.
- 21:02The Yankees needed to there to get out of the ending without the run scoring and just missed it.
- 21:13The ball on the strike on Don Slott.
- 21:22Well the Royals come out early doing their type of game.
- 21:25That's how they play hitting and running and stealing bases and trying to force the opposing team to make mistakes.
- 21:37Well that play by Balboni at first base looms as large.
- 21:42They could have had a real big inning going up.
- 21:45Bones he had to make that outstanding play.
- 21:49That'll fall base it see if white will try to go to 30 will and but also will have to be under the cutoff man.
- 21:56So slot got jammed for a looping single right.
- 22:00White goes to third.
- 22:02Once again in the second inning the Royals that runners at first and third this time with two outs and Willie Wilson is the batter.
- 22:10Well Raleigh's made some pretty good pitches.
- 22:12He's just been a little unlucky.
- 22:13He when he had the double play situation he made a Frank White hit the ball on the ground but they could not go ahead and complete it.
- 22:20And he made a good pitch on slot there which he got jammed a little bit and just looped it out in the right field.
- 22:25Here's Wilson who followed the Balboni for the opening out of the ballgame.
- 22:32Strike one on Wilson.
- 22:56And Raleigh will take it himself as Balboni went away from the bag and that'll retire the side.
- 23:02The Royals pick up one run on two bases.
- 23:05They leave two men on base at the end of one and a half.
- 23:08The Royals lead the Yankees one to nothing.
- 23:22Don Baylor who Bobby Mercer has driven in the game winning run the last three Yankee wins.
- 23:28He'll lead off against Bud Black.
- 23:32Baylor is 10 for 16 in his last four games.
- 23:37So they're getting to hit that ball and hit it hard and get some good big key hits for the Yankees.
- 23:46Scott is batting average up to three oh one with eleven home runs and 44 runs batted in.
- 23:51And Baylor takes the strike.
- 24:03One and one game winning run batted in last night for Baylor was his fifth of the year.
- 24:08Dave Winfield leads with twelve game winning runs batted in.
- 24:21Leon Roberts pounding the glove and left one away.
- 24:25He just got under that ball Bill.
- 24:29That ball is right there. He just happened to get underneath it.
- 24:39Dave Winfield had a day off yesterday.
- 24:43He's back out today with his two fifty two batting average. It doesn't.
- 24:49Even though Dave has struggled a little bit lately the last two or three weeks he like you said he leads the American League in game winning RBI's with twelve.
- 24:58And he is also tied in triples with seven along with Larry Herndon and Alfredo Griffin.
- 25:06And he is sixth in the American League with sixty one runs batted in and he has 15 home runs.
- 25:14So when he does get a hit it's been productive.
- 25:17Two balls no strikes on Winfield Royals leading one to nothing.
- 25:21We're in the bottom of the second one out nobody on for the Yankees.
- 25:29But black who started the season at Omaha.
- 25:32He's won four lost three for the Royals since being called up.
- 25:38That's a drive that will not be caught.
- 25:41That is.
- 25:46Winfield anyone in the Yankee bullpen.
- 25:57Dave Winfield has just hit his 16th home run of the year and tied the ballgame up.
- 26:02And you know what happens every time a Yankee hits home run.
- 26:05Hey Dave Winfield this bud's for you.
- 26:10That ball might have gone into the enclosure that holds the monument and then we'll take a look out here reminds me of you when you hit from the left side.
- 26:17I mean he didn't know this ball and he didn't hit it any air he hit it right on the line.
- 26:22That ball goes all the way out in the left center and almost into the monuments.
- 26:27I think it did go into the monuments out there.
- 26:29I'd have to hit it twice to get it that far.
- 26:31That's about 450.
- 26:33So Winfield 16th home run.
- 26:35We've got a 1 1 tie here in the second inning and Steve Kemp takes the ball.
- 26:41I'm sorry I said that's the way you used to hit him from the left side.
- 26:46You looked at me like you wanted to hit me.
- 26:52And kept to a white at second bad hop but it's played and there to us.
- 26:59Oh he got all of that with and Dave is happy.
- 27:05Take a look at it here and see if we can see the ball went right in just dropped right in there where the monuments are.
- 27:14I mean he nailed that ball.
- 27:15Yes he did.
- 27:17Whoo.
- 27:18And this fella can hit that ball in there to Steve Balboa a two thirty one hitter with two home runs and eight runs batted in.
- 27:24He really hasn't gotten into a ball yet here at the stadium.
- 27:27I've seen him hit some long balls and especially in the spring training but I've never so far since he's been in the big leagues with the Yankees.
- 27:35I haven't really seen no one like you said that he's capable of Yankees one Royals one were in the bottom of the second and Balboni takes high.
- 27:49I think Balboni's pitch selection is becoming a little better.
- 27:53He's not swinging wildly.
- 27:55He's still swinging and missing but he's not swinging wildly anymore.
- 28:03That's a foul ball off third.
- 28:05Well I've said it a few times and probably quit talking about it but Steve Balboni his out pitch is the breaking ball and like I said a little surprised that Steve has not adjusted to it a little more as many of breaking ball pitches that he's seen.
- 28:23I think the key is not being able to play every day.
- 28:27He's for him to adjust to that.
- 28:30He's got to go out there day after day after day and see it in game situations.
- 28:34Well the only problem with that you might not be able to do that with the Yankees.
- 28:37No two balls and a strike on Balboni.
- 28:46You've got Mattingly at first base you've got smally at first base you've got Ken Griffey coming off the disabled is pretty soon.
- 28:52Who can also play first base.
- 28:55Popped up.
- 28:58Brett.
- 29:02That's in foul territory and it's out number three the Yankees pick up a run on a Dave Winfield home run his 16th of the year.
- 29:09At the end of two Yankees one and the Royals one.
- 29:20Third inning a 1 1 tie in the count on you all Washington is no balls on the strike.
- 29:23One away.
- 29:38You are Washington now 0 for 2 he has struck out and bounced out.
- 29:43It was a high pitch he was trying to get on top of it he just got on top of a little too much.
- 29:53And here's George bread who single up the middle in the first inning.
- 29:58That's hitter in baseball.
- 30:00George Brett.
- 30:01Yeah.
- 30:03How about.
- 30:05And I can't say it cruise the best hitter in baseball.
- 30:06About that first baseman with Boston.
- 30:08No.
- 30:08You can sting it.
- 30:09No.
- 30:09No.
- 30:12And Brett takes wide ball one.
- 30:13When you get a guy that can hit
- 30:16three fifty or close to four
- 30:17hundred and hit you twenty or
- 30:19twenty five home runs and drive
- 30:20you in ninety one hundred runs
- 30:21that's what I call the best
- 30:23hitter in baseball.
- 30:25And the left center and one
- 30:28field will let Kemp take charge
- 30:31and their two outs.
- 30:34Who's the best hitter you've
- 30:35ever seen.
- 30:36In baseball.
- 30:37Who is.
- 30:38You've ever seen overall
- 30:39throughout your career as a.
- 30:41Youngster maybe watching game.
- 30:42I have to say.
- 30:44George Brett.
- 30:45And before George Brett I'd
- 30:47have to say Tony Oliva.
- 30:49You see Ted Williams.
- 30:51There did.
- 30:51I know I didn't see Ted Williams.
- 30:53You see Hank Aaron.
- 30:55Yeah I saw Hank Aaron.
- 30:57You see Stan Musial.
- 30:59Didn't get to see Stan.
- 31:02Flat out hitting usual could hit.
- 31:03Just for flat out hitting.
- 31:05And.
- 31:07Here's how McCrae.
- 31:08He's been up once bounced to
- 31:10I'm just talking about present
- 31:12day players that you've seen and
- 31:14been associated with.
- 31:18Even though a guy hits for an
- 31:20average like Wade Boggs and Rod
- 31:22Carew they just don't they don't
- 31:23hit that many home runs and they
- 31:24don't drive that many runs in.
- 31:25They're just an average hitter.
- 31:26They don't have all the
- 31:27components that you need to be
- 31:29an outstanding.
- 31:30Or the best hitter in baseball.
- 31:31George Brett is.
- 31:32In the game.
- 31:35It's two balls no strikes on
- 31:37Macrae.
- 31:43When one McCrae trying to pull
- 31:45it doesn't often try to pull a
- 31:46ball normally hits a ball to a
- 31:47right center field.
- 31:49It's two and one.
- 31:54And that's high three balls and
- 31:56a strike.
- 31:57There's Macrae.
- 32:00Came from the Cincinnati Reds to
- 32:02the Kansas City Royals quite a
- 32:04few years ago and has really
- 32:05done well in the American League.
- 32:08Ball for McCrae walks.
- 32:10One thing when he was younger
- 32:11McCrae used to be a threat to
- 32:12steal but as he's gotten older he
- 32:15has stopped trying to steal
- 32:17Well he he's still got pretty
- 32:19good speed and he will steal a
- 32:21base here and there but like you
- 32:23said he does not try to steal as
- 32:25much now as he used to.
- 32:27There might be a reason for that
- 32:28to.
- 32:31The cows are my now won't him
- 32:32stealing too many bases to try
- 32:34to save himself.
- 32:35I don't know you never know.
- 32:37Amos Otis has been up once and
- 32:38Balboni made a fine play on his
- 32:40ground ball was in the second
- 32:42inning leading off strike one on
- 32:44Otis.
- 32:46Well the Reds lead the Mets
- 32:47three nothing that ball game just
- 32:49underway it's in the second
- 32:50inning.
- 32:51March off picked up another run
- 32:53they lead Houston three nothing
- 32:54in the fifth inning like two on
- 32:59Otis Raleigh just ran back and
- 33:02throwing fastballs were in the
- 33:05top of the third a 1 1 tie
- 33:07between the Yankees and the
- 33:08Kansas City Royals and time is
- 33:18called there he is again stepping
- 33:20He does that a lot.
- 33:23Does it too often if I were a
- 33:24pitcher.
- 33:30He don't like Jim music either.
- 33:32No.
- 33:33Otis.
- 33:34They're going to come inside but
- 33:36a bit low.
- 33:37One and two on Otis.
- 33:39Serone tried to steal the pitch
- 33:41and Raleigh shakes his head.
- 33:44Well this is one of those
- 33:45borderline pitches that just
- 33:46happened to be down just a hair
- 33:48below the knees.
- 33:56Minnesota is leading Cleveland
- 33:57six to two that ball game in the
- 33:59fifth inning as the American
- 34:01League score has not come up on
- 34:02the board.
- 34:04It's two and two on a Masotas
- 34:07ex Yankee coach Mike for always
- 34:09having who's the manager of the
- 34:10Cleveland and he's having some
- 34:11problems on there for his first
- 34:13rookie season as a manager.
- 34:15And Raleigh makes the catch out
- 34:18of retirement side.
- 34:20No runs no hits a walk and a man
- 34:22left on base.
- 34:24We're going to the bottom half
- 34:25the third inning.
- 34:26The Yankees one Kansas City one
- 34:31and Roy Smalley leads off against
- 34:33Bud Blacks Molly's batting 269
- 34:3510 home runs 31 runs batted in
- 34:40and the Yankees one.
- 34:41Good curve ball on the corner.
- 34:45It'll be small a Rick's own and
- 34:46Bert Campaneras Yankees one run
- 34:52on Dave Winfield's home run the
- 34:54Royals one run on three hits
- 34:58ball on the strike on Roy Smalley
- 35:02by the way this copyrighted
- 35:03telecast is presented by
- 35:04authority the New York Yankees
- 35:05and WPIX.

- 35:10private noncommercial use of our

- 35:18express written consent of the
- 35:19Yankees is prohibited.
- 35:22Two balls and a strike on Smalley
- 35:26and the center Wilson with a late
- 35:29jump but makes a catch.
- 35:30He's got to get it.
- 35:32He's got to get it.
- 35:33He's got to get it.
- 35:35He's got to get it.
- 35:36He's got to get it.
- 35:38With a late jump but makes a
- 35:40He's got great speed.
- 35:41Only Willie Wilson can make a
- 35:43play like that with the speed
- 35:45that he has because Roy did not
- 35:47it was one of those full swings
- 35:50and gets in on him a little bit
- 35:52Willie kind of took a step back
- 35:54but with his tremendous speed
- 35:55he's able to catch up with the
- 35:56ball and make a diving
- 35:59outstanding catcher.
- 36:00He's got to make a play that
- 36:02Otis has less ability than
- 36:04Wilson but Otis playing a deep
- 36:05center field would never have
- 36:06gotten to that ball.
- 36:07Now Otis does not have to say
- 36:09anything about his ability but
- 36:10he doesn't have the speed that
- 36:11Willie Wilson has.
- 36:13Here's Rick's own and that'll
- 36:16look foul into the seats down the
- 36:18The Royals have been trying for
- 36:19a couple of years to move Wilson
- 36:21from left field to center but
- 36:23when they first proposed that
- 36:25move by Amos Otis was upset by
- 36:27it and he didn't like it and
- 36:29he didn't want to be there.
- 36:31Well I don't know why he would
- 36:32be would be there that upset
- 36:34because Willie Wilson definitely
- 36:36can cover more ground than Amos
- 36:38Otis can but still when you move
- 36:40Amos Otis to right field he's
- 36:41got the better arm or the two.
- 36:44So right field would be more of
- 36:45a position for Amos Otis with
- 36:49the acquisition his arm out
- 36:52So straight away center and
- 36:55there are two outs two outs
- 36:58and the Yankees won and Kansas
- 37:00City won and we'll start all
- 37:01over again with Bert Campaneras.
- 37:03You know you talk about Willie
- 37:04Wilson playing center field in
- 37:05Kansas City the ball doesn't
- 37:07carry that well out there in
- 37:10Royal Stadium and with the speed
- 37:12that Willie Wilson has and those
- 37:14those balls that can hit be hit
- 37:16in the gap out there he can run
- 37:17right under and run them down
- 37:21Campaneras is all for one in the
- 37:23game bounce to short his first
- 37:25strike and he's going to come
- 37:28up batting 344 two balls no
- 37:38strikes on Campaneras Willie
- 37:40Wilson there he might have hurt
- 37:42his shoulder when he's making a
- 37:43diving catch out there trying to
- 37:45keep it loose.
- 37:46He's kind of hanging it down
- 37:47there like it's bothering him
- 37:49that's a strike laid on the
- 37:51outside corner two and one on
- 37:53Campaneras out of play upper deck
- 38:04right side to and to I am sure
- 38:07the the Yankee players have
- 38:11noticed Wilson shaking his arm
- 38:13out there and I'm pretty sure
- 38:14the Royals will take another
- 38:15look at it here as he makes that
- 38:17catch and goes right down on his
- 38:19elbow looks like he might have
- 38:20jammed his arm up against his
- 38:21shoulder his elbow.
- 38:23I think you try to use that arm
- 38:24to cushion his ball and that
- 38:26took the impact out of play
- 38:28Campaneras boiling an excellent
- 38:30pitch on the corner.
- 38:31But if you notice something like
- 38:32that and you are the Yankees and
- 38:34he stays in the ballgame and
- 38:35he's not that bad and you're a
- 38:38baserunner you can maybe take an
- 38:40extra base on because he won't
- 38:41be able to throw the ball that
- 38:42well you watch him see if he's
- 38:43going to throw between innings
- 38:44when he goes out next inning
- 38:48just the little things.
- 38:49Yeah he's still he acts like
- 38:54he's in pretty good pain out
- 38:55there.
- 38:56He might not continue this game
- 39:02there's Dick Houser.
- 39:04He don't seem to be too
- 39:05I'm sure he'll ask Billy Wilson
- 39:07when he comes in after the
- 39:08ending is over.
- 39:11They said let's see how Wilson
- 39:13gets a ball in here Bobby.
- 39:14He's sort of holding that.
- 39:17That hurts a little bit.
- 39:18Yeah it hurts him a little bit.
- 39:20I think Willie would probably I
- 39:23am surprised as much as Willie
- 39:25has done that that the trainer
- 39:26from the Royals has not gone out
- 39:28and talked to him.
- 39:29Maybe they don't feel he's
- 39:30hurting or can hurt.
- 39:34Well by watching his actions he
- 39:36looks like he's hurt pretty good.
- 39:42Well Campanera singles up the
- 39:43middle with two outs that'll
- 39:44bring on Greg Nettles who's been
- 39:46up once and fouled out scores
- 39:49tied 1 1 here in the third strike
- 39:51went on Nettles.
- 40:03You know Wilson's a former
- 40:04football player too and he he's
- 40:06got to really hurt to hurt
- 40:10him.
- 40:13Football players a lot more than
- 40:14baseball players are used to
- 40:16playing her.
- 40:17There's a trainer of the Royals
- 40:19I think he's on that top step
- 40:21waiting for Willie Wilson to
- 40:22come back in after the inning.
- 40:25You know Nettles started the
- 40:27season with a mustache he's
- 40:28since shaved it off.
- 40:30He went into kind of a slump
- 40:32about a month ago and he blamed
- 40:33it on a mustache.
- 40:34Well he decided to change a few
- 40:35things around maybe because of
- 40:39the mustache.
- 40:40No I don't think that was true.
- 40:42In fact that pit that pitch right
- 40:43there if he had the mustache he
- 40:45got shaven right there.
- 40:47One and two on Nettles with two
- 40:49outs that was going right for the
- 40:50mustache.
- 40:53Campanella is at first base a 1 1
- 40:55tie and black wants to keep
- 40:57camp in his close to first hit
- 41:01by camp in errors the Yankees
- 41:02second against the left hander
- 41:04the first one a big hit.
- 41:05Winfield 16th home run of the
- 41:07year tying the ballgame up in
- 41:08the second base.
- 41:13You might look for Campanella
- 41:14to take a chance and steal this
- 41:16base.
- 41:17Greg Nettles has got one ball
- 41:19and two strikes so he's in the
- 41:20hole against the pitcher but
- 41:21black.
- 41:22He might take a chance or camp
- 41:24he might take a chance to try
- 41:25to steal the base.
- 41:29Whoa.
- 41:30Two and two on Nettles.
- 41:32There's Zimmer Don Zimmer the
- 41:33third base coach who would give
- 41:37the stop sign to camp in errors.
- 41:39I understand some Yankees have
- 41:41the green light all the way.
- 41:42The only time that they cannot
- 41:43run is when Billy Martin puts up
- 41:45the red light.
- 41:46Otherwise they can run whenever
- 41:47they want.
- 41:52There's three things they'll
- 41:55they're either on their own
- 41:57either Billy gives them the sign
- 41:58to go on that particular pitch
- 42:00or like you said he puts up the
- 42:02stop sign doesn't want them going
- 42:04at all.
- 42:10He's going this time but is it
- 42:11right back to black and that'll
- 42:14retire the side.
- 42:15No runs a base hit the man left
- 42:17on base on the McDonald's
- 42:18scoreboard to score at the end of
- 42:19three.
- 42:20The Yankees won the Kansas City
- 42:21Royals one.
- 42:25Let's pause 10 seconds along the
- 42:27Yankee baseball network for
- 42:28station identification.
- 42:40I John Watson who walked and
- 42:42scored his first time up is the
- 42:43batter and swings and misses its
- 42:45strike two.
- 42:47Where's Bobby Mercer.
- 42:49Just want to show you this Bobby
- 42:51this little boy was named after
- 42:53you Bobby Ray Erda.
- 42:56Isn't that a cute picture.
- 42:58He's got a Yankee uniform on.
- 42:59He was born on June 22nd 1983
- 43:02seven pounds two ounces.
- 43:05Looks just like Bobby said.
- 43:08And his parents are great Yankee
- 43:10fans and wanted their first child
- 43:12if a boy named after their
- 43:13favorite player.
- 43:15They didn't know how to spell
- 43:16resuto so they said Bobby Ray
- 43:18Mercer foul back.
- 43:28It's two and two and you know
- 43:29where that's from the Bingham
- 43:30Ten area and we got met.
- 43:32We got such great Yankee fans up
- 43:34there.
- 43:35Oh you got to go up and see Matt
- 43:37Botnick and Scottie Gow and all
- 43:39the Yankee fans up there.
- 43:42I tell you they love you.
- 43:44They said rip the right center
- 43:46field by Wathen and Winfield
- 43:50ready to fire it in in a hurry.
- 43:54Wathen takes the little
- 43:57protector off fourth hit for the
- 44:01Royals and Leon Roberts the
- 44:04batter and a man just as big if
- 44:06not bigger than Leon Roberts is
- 44:08sitting next to me Frank message.
- 44:10Are you bigger than Leon Roberts.
- 44:12Well I have to look up Robert's
- 44:14size here scooter and tell you
- 44:16in just a moment.
- 44:17All right.
- 44:19A 1 1 ballgame on a tremendous
- 44:22home run by Dave Winfield wrote
- 44:28a first but he's back.
- 44:30I got Leon by about an inch.
- 44:32OK then I'm right for a change.
- 44:34All right.
- 44:35Robert who had a home run
- 44:37yesterday chewing on that
- 44:38tobacco foul in and out of the
- 44:41Yankee dugout and there goes
- 44:43Gamble wave in a towel.
- 44:45Oscar's got a groin ball he
- 44:47almost had a lump from the line
- 44:49drive.
- 44:50Let's see that's Milborne next
- 44:52to him.
- 44:53Yeah.
- 44:55A lot of little nagging injuries
- 44:57on the Yankee club scooter and
- 44:59wine to go with a groin ball.
- 45:01Oh there's Sammy Ellis the
- 45:02pitching coach going out.
- 45:03Hope that Raleigh didn't do
- 45:05anything.
- 45:07I hope not cause Robert split his
- 45:09bat went back for a new bat and
- 45:12maybe Sammy's telling them about
- 45:14Watson at first we remark what a
- 45:16great base theory is especially
- 45:17for a catcher and maybe he wants
- 45:20him to shorten that kick.
- 45:22OK.
- 45:23They got Jay Howler do it very
- 45:24well Frank.
- 45:25Yeah they really have a short
- 45:27net kick bring the pitch release
- 45:28perhaps just a little quicker.
- 45:30Yep.
- 45:31You know last time Watson was on
- 45:32scooter they had a hit and run
- 45:33He got such a great break had
- 45:34Roberts not swung at the pitch
- 45:36Watson would have stolen second
- 45:37without sliding you're right.
- 45:40One strike and they want to keep
- 45:44them close.
- 45:45But you watch the way Raleigh
- 45:47lifts that leg and if you time
- 45:48it just right get some jump.
- 45:51There he goes.
- 45:52Check swing foul.
- 45:54Yep.
- 45:55He double swung and he hit his
- 45:57back twice.
- 45:58Yes.
- 45:59Only counts as one strike though
- 46:00Yeah only counts as one strike
- 46:01and even though the ball wound
- 46:02up fair ground it was well and
- 46:06again Watson had that excellent
- 46:08He really did.
- 46:09He had a big lead.
- 46:10He would have had the base
- 46:11stolen again at Roberts not
- 46:12smart.
- 46:14Unbelievable for a catcher broke
- 46:16the record for a stolen bases
- 46:18for a catcher last year and he
- 46:20stole an 18 this year and 22
- 46:22drives slice foul.
- 46:28He quick pitched him a little
- 46:30bit that time but I hope it
- 46:32doesn't affect Raleigh's
- 46:33pitching a lot of times when you
- 46:35concentrate on getting rid of
- 46:36the ball quickly you don't have
- 46:38as much on it.
- 46:40Well you better have it on it
- 46:41with Roberts he's hit a home
- 46:42run in this area.
- 46:43He's strong.
- 46:46Bouncer in the hole by Campanaro
- 46:49and Watson's going to go to
- 46:51third and he's going to make it
- 46:53and a throw to second he's out
- 46:55at second base.
- 46:56All right.
- 46:57Great play by Greg Nettles.
- 47:00He knew he couldn't get the
- 47:01runner at third Frankie went out
- 47:03and got the ball and fired it
- 47:04to small you put the tag on him.
- 47:06Let's watch it again.
- 47:07This is a good play.
- 47:08The pitch is up.
- 47:09I don't know how Roberts beat
- 47:10that ball down on the ground.
- 47:12First of all Campanaro's cannot
- 47:14get it but now watch Pennella.
- 47:18He throws it all away on the
- 47:19fly which helps Nettles.
- 47:21Here's Watson coming into
- 47:22right right.
- 47:23He's in there.
- 47:24Nettles now moves out for the
- 47:25throw and rips it back to
- 47:27second base and there's the tag
- 47:30applied by Smalley as Roberts is
- 47:32out at second.
- 47:33It'll be a single and he is out
- 47:35nine five six five.
- 47:39Frank White and Yankees have the
- 47:41infield in a 1 1 ballgame.
- 47:44White bounce the second first
- 47:45time up.
- 47:46Oh he had a way off stride with
- 47:48that change.
- 47:49Strike one.
- 47:51That's one reason I think that
- 47:53Raleigh has been really more
- 47:54effective as a starting pitcher
- 47:56than he was as a reliever because
- 47:57he will throw that change as a
- 48:00starter when he came out of the
- 48:01bullpen he'd never use the
- 48:02change right.
- 48:05Oh he got him.
- 48:06Yes sir.
- 48:07He swung at that.
- 48:09It's 0 and 2.
- 48:10He tried to check it but
- 48:11couldn't do it.
- 48:16There it is pitchers almost in
- 48:17the dirt.
- 48:18He had a completely full some
- 48:20hitters get a little over
- 48:21anxious with runners on and the
- 48:22infield in just missed.
- 48:26Oh that was close.
- 48:27As the score 1 and 1 the Royals
- 48:30with five hits the Yankees with
- 48:32two and as Wathen at third we
- 48:39told you is an excellent base
- 48:40runner bounce and Nettles makes
- 48:45a great play but it'll be a base
- 48:47hit.
- 48:48He would not have been able to
- 48:49get Wathen at home it was right
- 48:50over the bag.
- 48:52It'll be a base hit and the
- 48:54Royals lead 2 to 1.
- 48:56Well that's white second RBI and
- 48:58Wathen second run scored here
- 48:59it is again.
- 49:02Hard shot right down the line
- 49:04that was knocks it down holds it
- 49:07to a single by knocking the ball
- 49:09down but the run will score and
- 49:11it's a basic.
- 49:13So the Royals take a 2 to 1 lead
- 49:15here in the top of the fourth one
- 49:17man out and they'll have to keep
- 49:20an eye on white here is Don
- 49:21Slott the catcher single right
- 49:23his first time up.
- 49:27Another base hit ripped to left
- 49:29field and that's the seventh
- 49:31base hit for the Royals and
- 49:34almost looks like a replay of
- 49:37Ray Fontana's game Frank when
- 49:39they started hitting the young
- 49:41left hander.
- 49:42Yep.
- 49:43And the bullpen will go to work.
- 49:44That is Dale Murray who will
- 49:45start drawing four hits here in
- 49:48the inning.
- 49:49The only man retired has been
- 49:50Robert's trying to stretch a
- 49:53well not trying to stretch a
- 49:54single into a double trying to
- 49:55advance from first base to
- 49:57second following his base hit on
- 49:58a throw to third and Dale Murray
- 50:00has done an excellent job
- 50:01Frank in his last two outings at
- 50:03least.
- 50:04Well they've changed his
- 50:05mechanics around he pitches
- 50:06completely off the stretch
- 50:08position although he winds up
- 50:09when he warms up in the bullpen
- 50:14Willie Wilson has popped the
- 50:17first and bounced back to the
- 50:20pitcher one out.
- 50:24It's like all the Royals like to
- 50:26leave two of their buttons open
- 50:29on their shirts.
- 50:32Wow.
- 50:33Got a little bit of sarong there.
- 50:36Yeah they do.
- 50:38Well the Yankee has been a
- 50:39Yankee tradition over the years
- 50:40to leave one one up and yeah
- 50:42like every one of them at those
- 50:44two buttons open Willie's a
- 50:48bubblegum sure and blower
- 50:53caponeras broke for the bag so
- 50:55Raleigh steps off the mound
- 50:57talking about Watham a moment
- 50:58Scooter he stole thirty six
- 50:59bases last year and broke Ray
- 51:01Shocks record for stolen bases
- 51:02by a catcher.
- 51:03Hmm.
- 51:04Shock stole 30 and had the
- 51:05record until last year a bunt
- 51:09bounced up and hit him.
- 51:10Sharon said it hit him in fair
- 51:12territory.
- 51:13The plane on fire says no and
- 51:15that is a very difficult play to
- 51:17call.
- 51:18Well the plane on fire doesn't
- 51:19call that place good or that's
- 51:20called by Joe Brakeman that
- 51:21second and Brakeman made the call
- 51:23right away.
- 51:24I don't believe he was out of
- 51:25the box Frank.
- 51:26He's fast but he's not that
- 51:27fast.
- 51:29You see that.
- 51:30Right there he's in the box.
- 51:31Now you see at the top of your
- 51:33screen second base on fire
- 51:34Brakeman waving a foul.
- 51:35It's Brakeman's call as the
- 51:37plate umpire is blocked out on
- 51:39it.
- 51:40Billy does.
- 51:41Well he he can argue but he does
- 51:43not have a valid point to argue
- 51:45there.
- 51:50It's a very deceiving play.
- 51:53Now if Wilson had been on home
- 51:55Blake he would have been out.
- 51:56He would have been out because
- 51:57home plate is in fair territory
- 51:59of course.
- 52:00But I believe he was still in
- 52:01the batter's box and I think the
- 52:02replay show I do too Frank.
- 52:04I had own two on Willie Wilson
- 52:07played on fire put two hands up
- 52:08in the air but he was saying I
- 52:09don't know.
- 52:10Right.
- 52:11So Rowan jumped up and Rick
- 52:13never knew where the ball went.
- 52:14He was looking up in the air
- 52:15down third outside and Serone
- 52:21bluffs a throw to first and
- 52:23diving back a slot.
- 52:42I had one ball two strikes one
- 52:44out.
- 52:45Royals leading two to one just
- 52:49outside two and two struck come
- 53:05out.
- 53:06Good pitch by Shane Raleigh
- 53:10who strikes out the tough Willie
- 53:15Wilson.
- 53:16It is again this pitch I believe
- 53:18will be out of the strike zone
- 53:19low.
- 53:20Yep.
- 53:21As Wilson tried to uppercut the
- 53:22ball Raleigh gets a big big
- 53:24strikeout there.
- 53:25That's his second of the ball
- 53:26game and here's the other man
- 53:28he struck out U.L. Washington
- 53:30was struck out and bounced his
- 53:31second.
- 53:32You know it surprises me scooter
- 53:33that Willie Wilson leads the
- 53:35Royals in strikeouts.
- 53:36No kidding.
- 53:37Yeah.
- 53:38We know he's swinging a lot
- 53:39of the ball.
- 53:40He's got a lot of power.
- 53:41He's got a lot of power.
- 53:42He's got a lot of power.
- 53:43He's got a lot of power.
- 53:44He's got a lot of power.
- 53:45Frank and he is pressed right
- 53:46one.
- 53:47I don't see why I don't either.
- 53:48He's not a home run hitter.
- 53:49His home runs will be inside the
- 53:50park.
- 53:51He'll lay out his home runs and
- 53:53he has struck out now 52 times
- 53:58U.L. Washington with the
- 54:01proverbial toothpick.
- 54:03I used to know guys Frank that
- 54:05had a gold toothpick.
- 54:08Don't ever mess around with a
- 54:09toothpick.
- 54:12He says whoever used a gold
- 54:14toothpick had wooden teeth.
- 54:15That was George Washington
- 54:18outside one on one.
- 54:23Toothpick Jones.
- 54:24Yeah.
- 54:26He go through a box of my ball.
- 54:27That's right.
- 54:28He used to pitch because you've
- 54:29got to bear down every time you
- 54:30throw your break one just about
- 54:32they say the mound would have a
- 54:33little pile of broken to the
- 54:34place after the game.
- 54:35I never saw him pitch though.
- 54:37He's got to be a good pitcher.
- 54:39And that should do it.
- 54:41And now it goes back back and
- 54:43falls down and holds on to the
- 54:45ball.
- 54:46Holy cow.
- 54:47Penelope saw Mumford do that
- 54:49yesterday.
- 54:50It looks so good on TV.
- 54:51Lose this side and watch this.
- 54:55Oh man.
- 54:57And the score now at the end of
- 54:59three and a half is the Royals
- 55:01two and the Yankees one.
- 55:03I don't know how he held out on
- 55:05it.
- 55:06He's got to be Penelope made
- 55:08that sensational falling catch
- 55:10all twinkle toes out there.
- 55:12Frank watch it.
- 55:13Here it is again.
- 55:15But I'll ask to dig back.
- 55:16He was playing the hitter very
- 55:17shallow and right there as he
- 55:20hits the warning track his foot
- 55:22slips but he makes the catch as
- 55:24he hits the deck rolls over
- 55:26hangs on Mumford.
- 55:28Same thing in last night's ball
- 55:30game.
- 55:30Yep.
- 55:31Exactly the same.
- 55:32And they both caught the ball
- 55:35and Penelope who bounced his
- 55:38third his first time up.
- 55:39Well lead it off Yankees trail
- 55:41to the one.
- 55:55Let's see what stance he uses
- 55:56this time.
- 55:57Scooter.
- 55:58All right.
- 55:59You had a number last time
- 56:00Frank.
- 56:00Well he started out with five
- 56:02forty one and changed it to
- 56:03seventy two.
- 56:05All right.
- 56:06Let's see.
- 56:07He doesn't like anyone
- 56:08comfortable.
- 56:10You're absolutely right.
- 56:11You know he's got to be exactly
- 56:13comfortable and in time his
- 56:16swing forward come up and takes
- 56:19it outside and high ball one.
- 56:21He just before the pitch came he
- 56:23moved the left foot just a
- 56:24little bit.
- 56:25Yep.
- 56:28Very few hitters can change
- 56:30stances as often as Penelope
- 56:32does.
- 56:33He's got to continue to hit
- 56:34well.
- 56:35But I think the important thing
- 56:36is to be comfortable at the
- 56:37plate.
- 56:42Bounces it foul nice play done
- 56:44Zimmer old shortstop.
- 56:47As ever a man of many
- 56:48positions.
- 56:49Yes.
- 56:50I shouldn't say he played a
- 56:51short second third even caught a
- 56:54little bit.
- 56:55Yep.
- 56:56He bounced that straight down
- 57:00the line.
- 57:02Black on the mound black is not
- 57:14a strikeout pitcher.
- 57:16Oh rip the left field but
- 57:17curving foul.
- 57:22Look at Lou.
- 57:25I said it.
- 57:26Lose says that's my best shot.
- 57:27Why does it have to be foul.
- 57:29I mean it's a good shot.
- 57:31You know getting back to Don
- 57:32Zimmer.
- 57:33You mentioned shortstop.
- 57:34He got third he played second
- 57:36he caught.
- 57:37He also played first.
- 57:38No kidding.
- 57:39He played left field right
- 57:40field center field and pitched.
- 57:42He played all position and he's
- 57:44coached and he's managed.
- 57:45Yep.
- 57:46Look at him.
- 57:47Don Zimmer and he loves to talk
- 57:49baseball.
- 57:50He'll chew your ear off.
- 57:51He'll talk day and night.
- 57:52Great story teller is Mr.
- 57:54Zimmer.
- 57:58He's got a good curve that
- 57:59Penelope golf and he is one of
- 58:01the best low ball hitters in
- 58:03baseball.
- 58:04Mr. Penelope.
- 58:05Yep.
- 58:06Another thought on Mr. Zimmer.
- 58:08He married his childhood
- 58:09sweetheart.
- 58:10Now we'll watch Penelope swing
- 58:12at this one that curve ball he
- 58:14ripped in Elmira New York at
- 58:17home plate home plate.
- 58:18They used to do that a lot in
- 58:19the minor leagues.
- 58:20It really helped because you
- 58:21never had any money playing in
- 58:22the minor leagues in those days
- 58:24and they'd outfitch anyway give
- 58:25you furniture.
- 58:27He's got a good curve.
- 58:28He's got a good curve.
- 58:29He's got a good curve.
- 58:30He's got a good curve.
- 58:31Bounces it over the pitchers
- 58:32head but you well Washington
- 58:34quick flip has got him one away.
- 58:37It's one of the few times you'll
- 58:39see Penelope reach for a low
- 58:40outside pitch and pull it.
- 58:43There it is again bouncing over
- 58:46black but Washington is a good
- 58:48shortstop.
- 58:50You say he may be a little bit
- 58:52underrated.
- 58:53And so yes as a fielder yes as a
- 58:55fielder.
- 58:56But he's not going to have to
- 58:57run away.
- 58:58He's hitting so low switch hitter
- 59:01he should be right up in the
- 59:02two seventies as fast as he can
- 59:04run down bail a flight the left
- 59:05first time up ball one.
- 59:09I got a card our organist is the
- 59:11young man from Philadelphia area
- 59:13filling in Freddie Leighton.
- 59:15What's his name Paul Richards
- 59:16Paul Richards fouled back and
- 59:19out of play he's played two
- 59:20Italian numbers for the last two
- 59:22hitters Penelope and Bela.
- 59:23I don't know whether he's
- 59:24confused or he thinks it's good
- 59:25to have a good pitch at the
- 59:26bottom of the fourth round.
- 59:27It's a good pitch for the
- 59:28Rondy one of them on the count
- 59:38and the Yankees trail by one
- 59:40here in the bottom of the fourth
- 59:50pretty good pitch that time by
- 59:51black right in on the hands one
- 59:53ball two strikes.
- 59:54He's got a good pitch open up
- 59:57was pitchers do make mistakes.
- 59:59They do.
- 1:00:00This kid has not walked anybody
- 1:00:04and we mentioned he is not the
- 1:00:05strikeout type a little low to
- 1:00:08and to get pitch a good game
- 1:00:11against the Yankees on Kansas
- 1:00:12City.
- 1:00:13He went nine innings gave up two
- 1:00:15runs six hits walk for and
- 1:00:17struck out two and the Royals
- 1:00:19won that game and extra innings
- 1:00:21he did not get the decision
- 1:00:22to go to the bottom of the fourth
- 1:00:23round.
- 1:00:24He's got a good pitch.
- 1:00:25Ball out of play in the upper
- 1:00:28deck.
- 1:00:31Johnny Mano gets 70 years old
- 1:00:33today.
- 1:00:34Happy birthday Johnny a bouncer
- 1:00:51and he's got a good pitch.
- 1:00:52He's got a good pitch.
- 1:00:53He's got a good pitch.
- 1:00:54He's got a good pitch.
- 1:00:55He's got a good pitch.
- 1:00:56He's got a good pitch.
- 1:00:57He's got a good pitch.
- 1:00:58So a Don turn around a look at
- 1:01:00what the umpire called him but
- 1:01:01he was out.
- 1:01:02That is again.
- 1:01:03White has to back up that ball
- 1:01:04was hit toward the middle and he
- 1:01:06doesn't get a whole lot on the
- 1:01:07throw but there is an up look
- 1:01:11like Wathen got stepped on
- 1:01:12almost very close.
- 1:01:16Well here he is.
- 1:01:18Dave Winfield gave him a day's
- 1:01:20rest of the day's rest of the
- 1:01:21day's rest of the day's rest of
- 1:01:23that game in the night's
- 1:01:24rest of the game.
- 1:01:26So a good ending order.
- 1:01:27All right.
- 1:01:29A little angry at not being in
- 1:01:30the number four spot.
- 1:01:32Hope he's still mad.
- 1:01:36One.
- 1:01:37Look at Dave.
- 1:01:38He thought that pitcher was
- 1:01:39going to be inside.
- 1:01:40You know it.
- 1:01:41He was.
- 1:01:42It was a little bit but not a
- 1:01:43knock down pitch.
- 1:01:44No.
- 1:01:45A purpose pitch as they call it
- 1:01:47that home run what do you say
- 1:01:49I've seen all year and one of
- 1:01:50the hardest I've ever seen.
- 1:01:51Yes because it was a line drive
- 1:01:53and for it to carry that far
- 1:01:56carry the fence and hit right
- 1:01:58back where the monuments are
- 1:02:00unbelievable poke right one to
- 1:02:11one two out nobody on bottom of
- 1:02:12the fourth Royals leading two to
- 1:02:14one right to the shortstop and
- 1:02:31Washington throws him out.
- 1:02:33So three ground outs that inning
- 1:02:35at the end of four it's the
- 1:02:37Royals two in the Yankees one well
- 1:02:47we move on to the fifth inning
- 1:02:48here at Yankee Stadium the
- 1:02:49Royals lead two to one and
- 1:02:50George Brett will be the lead
- 1:02:52off batter that Hal McCrae and
- 1:02:53Amos Otis against Shane Raleigh
- 1:02:55scooter.
- 1:02:56All right Frank and Brett is one
- 1:02:58for two is single center and
- 1:03:00flying to left Yankee pitching
- 1:03:03scooby Yankee pitching has done
- 1:03:04a pretty good job on Brett in
- 1:03:05this series.
- 1:03:06He's got a good shot.
- 1:03:07He's got a good shot.
- 1:03:09He sure have grounded his
- 1:03:10shorts Molly throws him out one
- 1:03:13away.
- 1:03:14Brett is now three for 16 in the
- 1:03:16series.
- 1:03:17That's unbelievable the way he
- 1:03:19swings that bad.
- 1:03:23Roy was touched up for seven
- 1:03:25hits for them last inning.
- 1:03:30A designated hitter but the
- 1:03:32Royals scored only one run his
- 1:03:34first pitch in the series.
- 1:03:44Full foul on a good change
- 1:03:45strike one.
- 1:03:47And how about that pitching job
- 1:03:48by Ron Guidry last night.
- 1:03:50I tell you Frank that's the
- 1:03:51Louisiana Lightning of 78.
- 1:03:53Wasn't it though.
- 1:03:54He came on so strong in those
- 1:03:56late innings.
- 1:03:57I won him on he struck out eight
- 1:04:03and one.
- 1:04:04Fly ball center field Winfield
- 1:04:06coming on makes the catch.
- 1:04:09I tell you it doesn't look like
- 1:04:11Winfield's moving but with those
- 1:04:12strides of his he eats up the
- 1:04:14ground.
- 1:04:17How about that divot that Willie
- 1:04:19Wilson dug up out there.
- 1:04:21Yeah.
- 1:04:21That great diving catch.
- 1:04:22Hmm.
- 1:04:23And Leon Roberts replaced it
- 1:04:24for.
- 1:04:25Oh that's very nice of him.
- 1:04:26Shook his hand and went over and
- 1:04:28replaced the divot.
- 1:04:28Yep.
- 1:04:29Must play a little golf.
- 1:04:31And he's got a great shot.
- 1:04:32Here's Amos Otis Otis robbed of
- 1:04:37a base hit twice once by Balboni
- 1:04:40on a great diving play and once
- 1:04:41on a liner back to Raleigh.
- 1:04:46All one.
- 1:04:48Now let's see if Otis pulls his
- 1:04:49trick here.
- 1:04:50He does it at least one time at
- 1:04:52every time at bat just as Raleigh
- 1:04:53is ready to pitch your last the
- 1:04:55time.
- 1:04:55And the umpires don't have to
- 1:04:56give him time if he calls it
- 1:04:58that late.
- 1:04:58I don't think they should allow
- 1:05:00him to do that.
- 1:05:01Yep.
- 1:05:02Now I don't know whether you
- 1:05:03don't play granted him time.
- 1:05:06He he just does that to
- 1:05:08aggravate the pitcher.
- 1:05:10And me.
- 1:05:11Well last time he did it Raleigh
- 1:05:12came inside down around his
- 1:05:13ankles and then he hit the line
- 1:05:15drive right back in Raleigh's
- 1:05:16glove.
- 1:05:17Ball two to nothing.
- 1:05:21Another footnote on Guidry last
- 1:05:23night's good with his eight
- 1:05:24strikeouts.
- 1:05:25He passed Bob Schalke and is in
- 1:05:28fifth place on the all time
- 1:05:29record.
- 1:05:30There's a strike.
- 1:05:34Guidry now has one thousand
- 1:05:35one hundred and sixty four
- 1:05:36strikeouts.
- 1:05:38It's two balls in a strike.
- 1:05:41Fly ball center field
- 1:05:42Winfield another good jump.
- 1:05:44Well you know he can't get it.
- 1:05:46That ball must have been a
- 1:05:47sinking line driver it tailed
- 1:05:49away.
- 1:05:49It looked like Dave thought he
- 1:05:50had it.
- 1:05:51He's talking to Penelope right
- 1:05:52now.
- 1:05:52I think the ball tailed away
- 1:05:53from him.
- 1:05:54Winfield may have misjudged that
- 1:05:55ball scooter.
- 1:05:56Uh huh.
- 1:05:57There you go.
- 1:05:57You see him on the run for it
- 1:05:58right there.
- 1:05:59He's trying to change his
- 1:06:00direction just a bit.
- 1:06:01Yeah he started sideways try to
- 1:06:03come in.
- 1:06:04It was too late.
- 1:06:04Yep.
- 1:06:07He may not have seen it right
- 1:06:08off the bat.
- 1:06:08We of course won't know until
- 1:06:10you ask Winfield after the ball
- 1:06:11game.
- 1:06:14All right.
- 1:06:14A two out single and his John
- 1:06:15Watson who has scored both of
- 1:06:17the royal runs a walk and a
- 1:06:19single takes the strike.
- 1:06:23Wearing the protective shin guard
- 1:06:26on the left leg.
- 1:06:27That's the leg he broke last
- 1:06:28time.
- 1:06:29He's got a lot of ball off of
- 1:06:30it.
- 1:06:30Wow.
- 1:06:31All out of play.
- 1:06:32Even more amazing to think that
- 1:06:34he set the all time stolen base
- 1:06:37record for a catcher.
- 1:06:39And in the meantime was out for
- 1:06:40a lot of the season with the
- 1:06:42broken ankle there from a
- 1:06:44fouling a ball down off his
- 1:06:45ankle.
- 1:06:48I think he stole the bases first
- 1:06:51game back from the broken ankle.
- 1:06:54Nobody figured he'd run those
- 1:06:56against the Yankees.
- 1:06:57He's got the ball and he's got
- 1:06:58it up and camping Harris back
- 1:07:02calling for it.
- 1:07:03Can't be makes the catch.
- 1:07:06No runs a hit nowhere as a man
- 1:07:08left at the end of four and a
- 1:07:10half the Royals two in the
- 1:07:11Yankees one.
- 1:07:17Well you heard that little
- 1:07:18chuckle at the end of that Toyota
- 1:07:20commercial that was a lot of fun
- 1:07:22for Bill White and me out here
- 1:07:25at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:07:25And that little fluff of bills
- 1:07:27that the producer liked it so
- 1:07:28much.
- 1:07:29He asked Bill if he could leave
- 1:07:30it in.
- 1:07:31Bill said of course and he
- 1:07:34could never count message.
- 1:07:35He used to miss the sign all the
- 1:07:37time.
- 1:07:37Why don't stick up for me.
- 1:07:40That's the commercial that I
- 1:07:41missed and I wanted to be in so
- 1:07:43badly.
- 1:07:48Quick word I was talking about
- 1:07:49getting a strikeout scooter
- 1:07:50before folks start asking why
- 1:07:51do you for it is the all time
- 1:07:52strikeout leader for Yankee
- 1:07:53pitchers with one thousand
- 1:07:55nine hundred and fifty six.
- 1:07:56Then Red Ruffing a thousand
- 1:07:58five hundred and twenty six.
- 1:07:59Lefty Gomez struck out a thousand
- 1:08:01four hundred and sixty eight
- 1:08:02Mel Stottlemeyer one thousand
- 1:08:04two hundred and fifty seven.
- 1:08:06And now Ron Guidry with one
- 1:08:07thousand one hundred and sixty
- 1:08:09four.
- 1:08:12Very impressive.
- 1:08:15There he is.
- 1:08:15Louisiana Lightning.
- 1:08:18Don't suppose he knew I was
- 1:08:20talking about him.
- 1:08:21No.
- 1:08:23Those pitchers really stick
- 1:08:24together on the bench.
- 1:08:27All right Steve Kemp.
- 1:08:28Good breaking pitch strike one.
- 1:08:32Steve bounced a second his first
- 1:08:34time up.
- 1:08:40Fly ball left field Roberts is
- 1:08:42right there.
- 1:08:44One hands it one man out.
- 1:08:47So Rosetta going back to your
- 1:08:48playing days how about a sky
- 1:08:50like this that buttermilk sky we
- 1:08:51refer to it is that tough to
- 1:08:53know.
- 1:08:53This is perfect.
- 1:08:54Oh yeah.
- 1:08:55Anytime the sun is hidden and
- 1:08:58it's overcast you can really
- 1:09:00pick up the ball.
- 1:09:01All right.
- 1:09:03Steve Balboni.
- 1:09:06Popped the third first time up.
- 1:09:07Oh.
- 1:09:09Good pitch there strike one.
- 1:09:14Yankees trailing two to one
- 1:09:15bottom of the fifth.
- 1:09:19Outside one on one.
- 1:09:22We need a run here and there's a
- 1:09:23little girl Kimberly Basshart up
- 1:09:27in kinder hook which is near
- 1:09:29Albany had a litter of rabbits
- 1:09:31name one after me call him the
- 1:09:33scooter.
- 1:09:34Rep foul almost got done Zimmer
- 1:09:38and he's got a Yankee cap on
- 1:09:41cute little rabbit.
- 1:09:46And I'm wondering if that's the
- 1:09:48same rabbit that's eating all my
- 1:09:50plants in the backyard outside
- 1:09:59to and to keep saying Balboni
- 1:10:08is overdue to show the Yankee
- 1:10:10fans just how far he can hit a
- 1:10:12ball.
- 1:10:14I'll get back to and to how
- 1:10:18Bonnie has just seemed to have
- 1:10:19trouble adjusting to the off
- 1:10:20speed pitch here in the major
- 1:10:22leagues.
- 1:10:23He's got a lot of curve balls
- 1:10:24and off speed pitches in the
- 1:10:25International League but he just
- 1:10:28can't seem to adjust to them
- 1:10:29here.
- 1:10:30I don't know what I can't figure
- 1:10:31it out but again he doesn't play
- 1:10:33day in and day out and play a
- 1:10:36couple of days and you sit on
- 1:10:37the bench a few days and Bud
- 1:10:41Black been in control of this
- 1:10:43ballgame.
- 1:10:46Look out how that missed him.
- 1:10:48I don't know if I was going to
- 1:10:49hit him on the elbow.
- 1:10:54Here it is again.
- 1:10:56That's bearing right on and he
- 1:10:57just did get the elbow out of the
- 1:10:58way.
- 1:10:59All right.
- 1:11:00Full count now on Balboni.
- 1:11:04I'd like to see him hit just
- 1:11:06one.
- 1:11:06That's all.
- 1:11:07Just one the way we saw him hit
- 1:11:10in the minor leagues.
- 1:11:14Got under it and it's out of
- 1:11:16play though Roy Smalley looking
- 1:11:20at it with Don Slott the
- 1:11:21catcher where they get the mud
- 1:11:23out of their spiked shoes with
- 1:11:25the shin guards that that's
- 1:11:27caked a little too hard.
- 1:11:33Well the threatening weather
- 1:11:33here today is good.
- 1:11:34They had the infield covered.
- 1:11:35Neither team took batting
- 1:11:36practice.
- 1:11:39Well I hope the weatherman's
- 1:11:40wrong although he said any time
- 1:11:42between noon and six o'clock we
- 1:11:44would have a thunderstorm but
- 1:11:47looks like it could miss us.
- 1:11:51Yankees will be flying out right
- 1:11:52after the ballgame heading for
- 1:11:53Arlington Texas to start an 11
- 1:11:56game 11 day road trip three
- 1:12:00different parts of the country
- 1:12:02southwest the Midwest and the
- 1:12:05northeast.
- 1:12:07That's right.
- 1:12:07Texas Chicago and Toronto.
- 1:12:09Oh he struck him out his first
- 1:12:11strike out of the ballgame ball
- 1:12:12was tailing away from Balboni
- 1:12:14and he tried to pull it.
- 1:12:17We have seen Steve Frank hit
- 1:12:19home runs to the opposite
- 1:12:20fields.
- 1:12:21Yes we have.
- 1:12:25Two out now Roy Smalley who was
- 1:12:27robbed of a base hit on that
- 1:12:28great play by Willie Wilson.
- 1:12:31That was the divot play.
- 1:12:32Yep.
- 1:12:35That was the divot play.
- 1:12:36Yep.
- 1:12:36Did he lay off.
- 1:12:38No he went around.
- 1:12:43Messes got those good eyes
- 1:12:44strike one.
- 1:12:46Didn't even have to appeal on
- 1:12:47that one.
- 1:12:51And loops went in his center.
- 1:12:53Wilson's not going to get that
- 1:12:54one.
- 1:12:55That's what you call a dying
- 1:12:56quail.
- 1:12:58Right off the end of the base
- 1:12:59hit.
- 1:13:00And he's got a good eye on the
- 1:13:02ball that's what you call a dying
- 1:13:06quail right off the end of the
- 1:13:08badgers went out and sat still
- 1:13:11out the center field.
- 1:13:13That's only the third hit for
- 1:13:14the Yankees or black.
- 1:13:19Rick's around.
- 1:13:21So wrong fly to center his first
- 1:13:23time up.
- 1:13:25Hey while Sarone steps in very
- 1:13:26interesting article in the New
- 1:13:28York Times today by Joe Durso
- 1:13:30and the Yankees are both leagues
- 1:13:32asking among other things for
- 1:13:34them to name their favorite
- 1:13:36ballparks to play in and outside
- 1:13:43ball one.
- 1:13:44Well Royal Stadium in Kansas
- 1:13:45City was voted the favorite in
- 1:13:47the American League with Yankee
- 1:13:51Stadium right up there in fourth
- 1:13:53place.
- 1:13:55All right.
- 1:13:56Municipal Stadium in Cleveland
- 1:13:57was voted the worst part to
- 1:14:00play in.
- 1:14:01I figured that even the Indian
- 1:14:03ballplayers moan about it and
- 1:14:05they play 81 games.
- 1:14:07Well they were overwhelming in
- 1:14:08their vote against their own
- 1:14:10stadium.
- 1:14:12No to nothing.
- 1:14:14They were also asked to name
- 1:14:15their ones they thought were the
- 1:14:17best umpires in both leagues and
- 1:14:20Steve Palermo was voted number
- 1:14:22one umpire in the American
- 1:14:23League.
- 1:14:24Yeah Steve besides being an
- 1:14:27umpire is one of the classiest
- 1:14:29dresses amongst the umpires
- 1:14:32outside three and nothing.
- 1:14:34Palermo has improved so much
- 1:14:36from his early days in umpire
- 1:14:38and he works hard.
- 1:14:39Oh he does.
- 1:14:40He works very very hard.
- 1:14:44All right.
- 1:14:44Three and Otis are on two out
- 1:14:46the Royals lead two to one
- 1:14:47bottom of the fifth right one
- 1:14:53three and one.
- 1:14:55I believe Dutch runner was
- 1:14:56the leading vote getter in the
- 1:14:58National League.
- 1:15:03I don't know those nationally
- 1:15:04umpires.
- 1:15:10That's that pitch tailing away
- 1:15:12from the right hand batter and
- 1:15:13when they try to pull it they
- 1:15:15either miss it or pop it up
- 1:15:17three and two small he will be
- 1:15:19released at first base and
- 1:15:21Wathen playing in back of them.
- 1:15:23That's a very important pitch
- 1:15:24for this young left handed
- 1:15:25guy.
- 1:15:27And a big pitch.
- 1:15:27Oh yeah.
- 1:15:28He's got a lot of outside a lot
- 1:15:31of ground balls.
- 1:15:35That goes small.
- 1:15:36Hard ground a lot of play by
- 1:15:38Brett.
- 1:15:39Holy county throws to run up
- 1:15:42great play by George Brett on a
- 1:15:44bullet hit by Sir own no runs
- 1:15:48ahead.
- 1:15:48Nowhere is a man left at the end
- 1:15:50of five on the cannon camera
- 1:15:52scoreboard.
- 1:15:53It's the Royals two and the
- 1:15:54Yankees one.
- 1:15:57You can always get Yankee
- 1:15:58tickets at all ticket drawn
- 1:15:59locations or by calling charge
- 1:16:01it as well as right here at the
- 1:16:03Yankee Stadium advanced ticket
- 1:16:04windows.
- 1:16:06Sixth inning coming up scooter
- 1:16:07and the Royals leading two to
- 1:16:08one and Leon Roberts two for two
- 1:16:10in the ballgame.
- 1:16:12All right.
- 1:16:12The big right hander facing
- 1:16:14Shane Raleigh and check swing
- 1:16:15bouncer.
- 1:16:16I have to hurry small a gets rid
- 1:16:19of it and gets him.
- 1:16:21That's a tough play for a guy as
- 1:16:23small as you Frank have to go
- 1:16:25down that low get the ball come
- 1:16:27up straight enough.
- 1:16:28That's right.
- 1:16:28And throw a little guy can get
- 1:16:31down and get it and throw from
- 1:16:32down there.
- 1:16:32But small he just can't do it.
- 1:16:34He's got to come up and take an
- 1:16:36extra step.
- 1:16:37Yep.
- 1:16:41One away is Frank White who is
- 1:16:42driven in both runs one on a
- 1:16:46ground out where the Yankees
- 1:16:47didn't turn to the double plan
- 1:16:49another on a spectacular save by
- 1:16:51Nettles which he got a base hit
- 1:16:53and a strike one a Frank White
- 1:16:58here's another guy I can't
- 1:16:59believe Frank is down at two
- 1:17:00forty seven.
- 1:17:01No I can't either rip to left
- 1:17:04field and going back camp and
- 1:17:07he's not going to get it.
- 1:17:08It's off the wall.
- 1:17:09You better hurry or whites going
- 1:17:11to have a triple he's going to
- 1:17:12make it.
- 1:17:13Camp had trouble picking up the
- 1:17:14ball the throw went over small
- 1:17:17he said but they still would not
- 1:17:18have gotten him a triple for
- 1:17:21the Yankees and he's going to
- 1:17:23have to get a triple.
- 1:17:24He's going to have to get a
- 1:17:24triple.
- 1:17:25He's going to have to get a
- 1:17:25triple.
- 1:17:26He's going to have to get a
- 1:17:27triple.
- 1:17:27Frank White Tony his third hit
- 1:17:30of the series in 16 at bat you
- 1:17:32see camp going but he'll not
- 1:17:34catch up with this one short
- 1:17:36hops off the wall and bounds
- 1:17:38away from him.
- 1:17:40Frank White with a play in front
- 1:17:42of him now camp will throw the
- 1:17:44ball over the head of small the
- 1:17:46cutoff man and Frank White
- 1:17:48coasts on into third base with a
- 1:17:50double and a triple.
- 1:17:51He's going to be hitting the
- 1:17:53infield in Don Slaughter who is
- 1:17:54two for two single right and
- 1:17:56single left will be the batter
- 1:18:01only one man out ball one and
- 1:18:16Seron bluffed a throw to third
- 1:18:18with nettles breaking over there
- 1:18:19and he's going to be the
- 1:18:20greatest combination I ever saw
- 1:18:22on that catcher at a third
- 1:18:24pickoff Thurman Munson and Greg
- 1:18:26Nilsen Greg Nittell Greg would
- 1:18:27give the sign and Munson would
- 1:18:28fire that ball down there and
- 1:18:30many many times they picked
- 1:18:31runners off.
- 1:18:32Oh Thurman had that quick
- 1:18:33release popped it up but it'll
- 1:18:37be out of play I believe
- 1:18:39Balboni will run out of room
- 1:18:42well back into the seats.
- 1:18:44Well the wind is blowing that
- 1:18:45way and it may be a true breeze
- 1:18:47this afternoon.
- 1:18:48The wind is blowing from left in
- 1:18:51toward the right field foul on
- 1:18:52a lot of us hitting us here in
- 1:18:54the booth I might add well
- 1:18:57there's a chill in the air here
- 1:18:59in New York certainly is just a
- 1:19:00raw damp day sort of a misty
- 1:19:03type day.
- 1:19:04But nonetheless a lot of great
- 1:19:07Yankee fans out here at Yankee
- 1:19:08Stadium.
- 1:19:09Oh yes.
- 1:19:10You know you say Misty and I
- 1:19:11right away I think of Johnny
- 1:19:12Mathis singing that song pitch
- 1:19:14out squeeze was not on two balls
- 1:19:17and he's got to take one slot
- 1:19:25has not laid down a sacrifice
- 1:19:27but this year they whistle them
- 1:19:29out of the batter's box and now
- 1:19:31this could either be something
- 1:19:33to confuse Billy Martin and the
- 1:19:35Yankees or maybe to squeeze his
- 1:19:37arm.
- 1:19:37We'll wait and see he's coming
- 1:19:41and a great job by slot as he
- 1:19:45almost dove to file that ball
- 1:19:47off and protect the runner.
- 1:19:49And that's what the Yankees
- 1:19:50going to have to do.
- 1:19:51Well one was caught napping.
- 1:19:52Right.
- 1:19:52Here it is again.
- 1:19:53You'll see him right there.
- 1:19:56That was not a pitch out but the
- 1:19:57pitch was well away from him.
- 1:19:58Now he's got to stay in the
- 1:19:59batter's box right.
- 1:20:00Not step on home plate or cross
- 1:20:02home plate.
- 1:20:03The best I've seen do that was
- 1:20:04Sir.
- 1:20:05Just recently and got an RBI
- 1:20:08RBI did not get a sacrifice
- 1:20:09because they made a play on the
- 1:20:11runner from first to second.
- 1:20:12But he got a run batted in and
- 1:20:15Sirone was almost perpendicular
- 1:20:17in the air when he laid the bat
- 1:20:18on it.
- 1:20:20Perpendicular perpendicular
- 1:20:24very good horizontal which was
- 1:20:25all right sideways.
- 1:20:30I like that slot just trying to
- 1:20:36slap that ball which is always a
- 1:20:37good idea with the infield in
- 1:20:39so I have to hit the ball hard.
- 1:20:41Sorry I use that word now I've
- 1:20:42got myself confused.
- 1:20:43I'm not sure if that's the right
- 1:20:45word for you.
- 1:20:45No no that's all right Frank.
- 1:20:47I can spell it but I don't know
- 1:20:49exactly what it means and he
- 1:20:56bounces one they got a letter
- 1:20:57roll and it goes foul.
- 1:20:59Now there's alert base running
- 1:21:01by Frank White.
- 1:21:02A lot of runners that third
- 1:21:04would kind of hesitate not know
- 1:21:05whether to go in or not.
- 1:21:06He broke immediately.
- 1:21:07They'd have never had a chance.
- 1:21:11Superstitious that you make sure
- 1:21:13you're not going to say I don't
- 1:21:17know who are the most
- 1:21:19superstitious people whether
- 1:21:21they be athletes or show people
- 1:21:23and that's true.
- 1:21:25That one line would show
- 1:21:27business people still gets me
- 1:21:29break a leg.
- 1:21:29Yeah sure.
- 1:21:31Means have a good night or
- 1:21:32something.
- 1:21:32Supposed to be bad luck to say
- 1:21:33good luck.
- 1:21:34Yeah.
- 1:21:37To and to the count one out and
- 1:21:41he filed it off.
- 1:21:42He's got a pretty good job up
- 1:21:43there protecting the plate.
- 1:21:45He's a tough man wants to strike
- 1:21:47out ratio Frank.
- 1:21:50He hasn't played really that
- 1:21:51much.
- 1:21:52He heard a lot this year he
- 1:21:52struck out only 14 times and a
- 1:21:55hundred and fifteen at bats.
- 1:21:58So one every 10 times.
- 1:22:01Yep.
- 1:22:09All right.
- 1:22:09Two balls two strikes just missed
- 1:22:15that inside corner.
- 1:22:16Boy he's looking for the ball
- 1:22:18away trying to slap it and
- 1:22:20Raleigh almost snuck it by him.
- 1:22:23Well he had a good idea there
- 1:22:24will watch that pitch again.
- 1:22:26He's slaught going into the
- 1:22:27pitch.
- 1:22:28But it was inside it's three and
- 1:22:30two.
- 1:22:30And that's a two.
- 1:22:39That'll get the run in and it's
- 1:22:42also over the head of
- 1:22:43Winfield.
- 1:22:44Holy cow.
- 1:22:46And slot's going to go for three
- 1:22:48and he's going to make it
- 1:22:51unbelievable back to back
- 1:22:53triples.
- 1:22:54And that's a two and a three
- 1:22:57and a four.
- 1:23:01Here comes Billy Martin.
- 1:23:06You know Phil was it.
- 1:23:08Bill the Royals have 10 hits in
- 1:23:10the ballgame and five of them
- 1:23:12are from their number eight and
- 1:23:13nine hitters.
- 1:23:14Frank White has two hits and two
- 1:23:16runs batted in slot has three
- 1:23:17hits and a run batted in.
- 1:23:19And then how about Roberts right
- 1:23:20above him.
- 1:23:21Roberts.
- 1:23:21That's right.
- 1:23:22He's got two more hits and set
- 1:23:24him up for the first to third.
- 1:23:26Well that's going to be all for
- 1:23:27Shane Raleigh Billy Martin asked
- 1:23:29for the baseball rally leaves.
- 1:23:33With the Royals out in front by
- 1:23:34a score of three to one.
- 1:23:37The Yankees will host the Detroit
- 1:23:39Tigers for a big three game
- 1:23:40weekend series August 5th through
- 1:23:42seventh highlighted by Skoll
- 1:23:44Bandit Yankee tote bag night and
- 1:23:46Bobby Mercer day here at Yankee
- 1:23:48Stadium.
- 1:23:49All fans attending the game on
- 1:23:51Saturday night August 6th will
- 1:23:53be honored with a tote bag
- 1:23:54compliments of Skoll Bandit and
- 1:23:57on Sunday afternoon August 7th
- 1:23:59one of the most beloved Yankees
- 1:24:00of all time Bobby Mercer will be
- 1:24:02honored here at Yankee Stadium
- 1:24:04when it'll be Bobby Mercer day.
- 1:24:06Don't miss these two special
- 1:24:08days.
- 1:24:11Billy Martin Yankee Captain
- 1:24:13Greg Nettles and catcher Rick
- 1:24:15Sirong await the arrival of Dale
- 1:24:18Raleigh the Royals are leading
- 1:24:24three to one and they have 10
- 1:24:25base hits already in the ball
- 1:24:27game.
- 1:24:28We're just in the top half of
- 1:24:29the sixth inning.
- 1:24:32Royals have left seven men on
- 1:24:34base.
- 1:24:35Raleigh.
- 1:24:36Pardon me.
- 1:24:37While going five and a third
- 1:24:38giving up 10 hits.
- 1:24:40I have him down for two walks
- 1:24:41and two strikeouts.
- 1:24:45And one of the two men he walked
- 1:24:47in the first half of the season
- 1:24:48and he's got a two score.
- 1:24:51Murray's record two and one
- 1:24:53run run average four point 69
- 1:24:56Murray had a really had a bad
- 1:24:57first half of the year.
- 1:24:59But I talked when we're on the
- 1:25:01last road trip scooter I talked
- 1:25:02to Jeff Talbot as we started the
- 1:25:06second half of the season I asked
- 1:25:07Jeff to sort of recap the first
- 1:25:08half and project his thoughts on
- 1:25:10the second half.
- 1:25:11And he said certainly the bullpen
- 1:25:13the middle relief pitching in
- 1:25:15the second half of the year
- 1:25:17right.
- 1:25:18But he said that this man Dale
- 1:25:20Murray had been working very
- 1:25:21very diligently in the bullpen
- 1:25:24trying to get his mechanics
- 1:25:26down.
- 1:25:27Jeff said it was a matter of
- 1:25:28mechanics.
- 1:25:29So what they had Raleigh do was
- 1:25:31work just off a stretch or what
- 1:25:33they had Murray do his work off
- 1:25:35just a stretch and set position.
- 1:25:37I talked to Dale Murray about
- 1:25:38it and he said yes he's fine.
- 1:25:40He found that he could not pitch
- 1:25:43in the bullpen and certainly he
- 1:25:45cannot wind up because he comes
- 1:25:47in with people on base right.
- 1:25:48So he has limited his deliveries
- 1:25:51off the stretch and set position
- 1:25:54even though we saw him wine go
- 1:25:55into a full motion when he
- 1:25:56warmed up there.
- 1:25:57It'll be interesting to see now
- 1:25:59if he sticks to that stretch and
- 1:26:00set with the runner at third and
- 1:26:02one out and we're going to have
- 1:26:05a pinch hitter Pat Sheridan for
- 1:26:08Willie Wilson.
- 1:26:09How do you like that.
- 1:26:10That's surprising.
- 1:26:11Very surprising.
- 1:26:12Although this young man has heard
- 1:26:14the Yankees in just about every
- 1:26:15game he's played either with the
- 1:26:17batter in the field or on the
- 1:26:18bases.
- 1:26:23He's batting 266 three home is
- 1:26:2515 RBI the Yankee infield still
- 1:26:27in with slaughtered third and
- 1:26:31just one man out in the royals
- 1:26:32leading three to one.
- 1:26:36Sheridan hurt the Yankees with
- 1:26:37his head out in Kansas City.
- 1:26:38Right.
- 1:26:41Strike one.
- 1:26:42When it was a pinch runner stole
- 1:26:44second and the throw to second
- 1:26:45base bounced off his head.
- 1:26:46He scrambled up and came on in
- 1:26:49to score the winning run in the
- 1:26:5012th inning slice foul back into
- 1:27:00the seats in the mezzanine.
- 1:27:01It's own to that sort of a
- 1:27:03modified version of the Joe
- 1:27:05Morgan arm flask.
- 1:27:07Elbow.
- 1:27:08I don't know whether he does it
- 1:27:08every time or not.
- 1:27:15I'm not right now.
- 1:27:16Wait a minute.
- 1:27:19Struck out on three pitches.
- 1:27:22Holy cow.
- 1:27:22What a job by Dale Murray right
- 1:27:25there.
- 1:27:26No better time for a strikeout
- 1:27:28Frank.
- 1:27:29Well that's very true.
- 1:27:29You can't take a chance on a
- 1:27:30ground ball or a fly ball.
- 1:27:31You can't take a chance on a
- 1:27:32ground ball or a fly ball.
- 1:27:34You can't take a chance on a
- 1:27:34ground ball or a fly ball.
- 1:27:35You can't take a chance on a
- 1:27:37ground ball or a fly ball.
- 1:27:38Fly ball is going to get the run
- 1:27:39in the ground ball would unless
- 1:27:40it was hit right at the one of
- 1:27:42the drawn in infielders.
- 1:27:43So Murray went for the strikeout
- 1:27:45and got it.
- 1:27:46All right.
- 1:27:47He's you well Washington who is
- 1:27:48struck out bounce to second and
- 1:27:50flying out to Pennella who made
- 1:27:52that circus catch off him
- 1:27:54falling down and holding on to
- 1:27:55the ball.
- 1:27:56And that's the end of the game.
- 1:28:07Ground ball right at Smalley and
- 1:28:09Murray does his job beautifully.
- 1:28:12Saves a big run.
- 1:28:14Royals pick up a run on two hits
- 1:28:16nowhere as a man left at the end
- 1:28:18of five and a half Royals three
- 1:28:20in the Yankees one.
- 1:28:24I never thought I'd see the day
- 1:28:26when he was out in center field
- 1:28:27right now.
- 1:28:29He could have hurt himself on
- 1:28:31that diving catch out the
- 1:28:32outfield but soon as we find out
- 1:28:34we'll let you know.
- 1:28:35Top of the Yankee order
- 1:28:36Campaneras Nettles and Pennella
- 1:28:38to face black.
- 1:28:45That's exactly what happened.
- 1:28:47Jimmy Hunter very alertly called
- 1:28:49that on that great diving catch
- 1:28:51by Willie Wilson his shoulders
- 1:28:53stiffened up.
- 1:28:53And that's the end of the game.
- 1:28:58Rip file again it almost got
- 1:29:00Zim.
- 1:29:01A shooting form today.
- 1:29:03Zimmer was hit hard.
- 1:29:06I think it was was about the
- 1:29:07camp in Kansas City or.
- 1:29:09Yeah.
- 1:29:14Winfield hit one that hit the
- 1:29:15umpire and then he hit one that
- 1:29:17got Zimmer.
- 1:29:20Outside a ball and two strikes
- 1:29:22on campy.
- 1:29:23And that's the end of the game
- 1:29:24for the Yankee.
- 1:29:25And the Yankees are in the
- 1:29:26field.
- 1:29:28Batting three fifty one.
- 1:29:30This is some comeback story on.
- 1:29:33Campanella.
- 1:29:35Bounces it in the hole.
- 1:29:36I mean Campanera that's a base
- 1:29:37hit.
- 1:29:38No chance for you.
- 1:29:39Well Washington did I say
- 1:29:41Campanella.
- 1:29:42I meant Campaneras.
- 1:29:43So campy starts things off in
- 1:29:45the bottom of the six with an
- 1:29:46infield hit Frank.
- 1:29:47And.
- 1:29:50U.L. Washington a lot of range.
- 1:29:52Will back end the ball but he
- 1:29:54knows he can't throw him out.
- 1:29:56Does.
- 1:29:57Holds on to it.
- 1:29:58All right.
- 1:29:58That's only the fourth hit for
- 1:29:59the Yankees but now.
- 1:30:01It brings up the potential
- 1:30:02tying run Greg Nettles.
- 1:30:04Who is popped a third and hit
- 1:30:06back to the box.
- 1:30:08It's always an encouraging side
- 1:30:10when your lead off hitter gets
- 1:30:11on base when you're behind in a
- 1:30:12ballgame.
- 1:30:13That's the first inning the
- 1:30:15Yankees have been able to do
- 1:30:16in the Yankees game.
- 1:30:19Oh he gave Nettles his pitch and
- 1:30:21Greg missed it.
- 1:30:22I slider.
- 1:30:27As Campanera said first Waffen
- 1:30:29holding him on.
- 1:30:39Foul in the upper deck on the
- 1:30:41third base side.
- 1:30:42And.
- 1:30:45Oh and two.
- 1:31:02Got him on another high slider
- 1:31:04and Nettles is struck out.
- 1:31:07It's only the second strikeout
- 1:31:08for black.
- 1:31:10Here's the pitch again.
- 1:31:12Like that'll swung right through
- 1:31:14it.
- 1:31:14Yeah.
- 1:31:15I looped Pennella will be the
- 1:31:17battle who twice has bounced out
- 1:31:18to third base.
- 1:31:20You know Scooter the Royals are
- 1:31:21in desperate need of pitching.
- 1:31:23I'm sure that Dick Hauser the
- 1:31:24Royals manager is happy with the
- 1:31:26job he's getting from this young
- 1:31:27man.
- 1:31:27But black this afternoon.
- 1:31:29I'm not sure that the two times
- 1:31:30the Yankees have seen him.
- 1:31:31He's been rough as you mentioned
- 1:31:32before.
- 1:31:34All right.
- 1:31:35Penelope now with Campanera said
- 1:31:36first and this is about the time
- 1:31:38Lou will shoot one between first
- 1:31:40and second.
- 1:31:42A big gap there with Wathen
- 1:31:44holding Campanera's on and white
- 1:31:46over near second.
- 1:31:53I outside ball one.
- 1:32:02I think in a situation like this
- 1:32:03but not until unless he gets two
- 1:32:05strikes on we'll just look for a
- 1:32:07pitch he can drive.
- 1:32:09He will.
- 1:32:12Happy narrows back.
- 1:32:15No time to get picked off in his
- 1:32:16spot.
- 1:32:21One ball no strikes on Penelope
- 1:32:24and no time for a ground ball
- 1:32:25either.
- 1:32:25No less it finds a hole.
- 1:32:31Black made Penelope wait now
- 1:32:32lose making black weight.
- 1:32:33He's got a little game of
- 1:32:36psychology right here.
- 1:32:46Back upstairs and out of play.
- 1:32:48One on one.
- 1:32:50But I was trying to go to right
- 1:32:51field with that.
- 1:32:51Yes he was.
- 1:32:54He'll do it at least till he has
- 1:32:55two strikes on him unless black
- 1:32:57comes way inside to him.
- 1:33:01Lose been losing his helmet
- 1:33:02swinging must have got a haircut
- 1:33:05now that a little loose.
- 1:33:19And again Lou pulled in Amos
- 1:33:21Otis right there.
- 1:33:22Just as black was ready to pitch
- 1:33:24Lou as the time.
- 1:33:25And he's got a little game.
- 1:33:34They say rip the center field.
- 1:33:37I'd said Penelope's got an idea
- 1:33:39every time he goes the bad.
- 1:33:42He really does.
- 1:33:44Happy narrows down a second base
- 1:33:45the Yankees have the tag runs on
- 1:33:47now and the guns are coming up
- 1:33:50Baylor and Winfield.
- 1:33:52Yogi Bearer have a little chat
- 1:33:53with Manila and they're going to
- 1:33:55be ready to pitch the win field
- 1:33:57the bullpen is going to get hot
- 1:33:58in a hurry.
- 1:33:59A black has not pitched a
- 1:34:00complete game this year.
- 1:34:01He had pitched only 72 innings
- 1:34:03at his first 11 starts which
- 1:34:07averages out to less than seven
- 1:34:11innings per ballgame.
- 1:34:13Let's pause 10 seconds along the
- 1:34:14Yankee baseball network for
- 1:34:15a quick look at the Yankees
- 1:34:32well you caught a quick look.
- 1:34:34Mike Armstrong right hander
- 1:34:36warming up in the Royal Bullpen
- 1:34:37he's a young man from this area
- 1:34:39from Andes New York which is on
- 1:34:41a long island and Boyers taking
- 1:34:44the lead well the Yankees will
- 1:34:47host that he tried Tigers for
- 1:34:48three games August 5th through
- 1:34:497th highlighted by Skoll Bandit
- 1:34:52Yankee tote bag night on
- 1:34:54Saturday night August 6th and
- 1:34:55Bobby Mercer day on Sunday
- 1:34:57afternoon August 7th.
- 1:34:59Keep those dates in mind.
- 1:35:02Poussin Barry is also going to
- 1:35:03get up in the Royal Bullpen.
- 1:35:04All right.
- 1:35:05Don Baylor is open to he's flying
- 1:35:07to left and bounce the second
- 1:35:10on Bobby Mercer day.
- 1:35:11Bobby sends him a gift of a
- 1:35:14solid could be gold plated
- 1:35:17spittoon for him to get rid of
- 1:35:20his skull.
- 1:35:23Drive that deep left field.
- 1:35:26Oh.
- 1:35:27Oh.
- 1:35:28I.
- 1:35:28Want to tie up the ballgame.
- 1:35:31Campanero.
- 1:35:31Sponsor.
- 1:35:32Panellist.
- 1:35:33Sponsor.
- 1:35:33And.
- 1:35:34Ball is in for the.
- 1:35:34Triple.
- 1:35:35We've got a tie ballgame.
- 1:35:36And.
- 1:35:38We've got a tie ballgame.
- 1:35:44I got to talk more about this
- 1:35:46spintone from person.
- 1:35:47Because he has been.
- 1:35:49We're going to look at it again
- 1:35:50first though.
- 1:35:51All right.
- 1:35:52That pitchers out over the
- 1:35:53plate.
- 1:35:53That's where they don't want to
- 1:35:54pitch Baylor.
- 1:35:55Let him open up and he can drive
- 1:35:57that ball.
- 1:35:58He drives this one four hundred
- 1:35:59and thirty feet off the wall.
- 1:36:03Right there.
- 1:36:04Short hopped off the wall.
- 1:36:05And.
- 1:36:07He's got a three to four.
- 1:36:11You are Washington plays the
- 1:36:12ball the third as Bonilla scores
- 1:36:14and Baylor has a triple two runs
- 1:36:16about it in.
- 1:36:17And it's a brand new ballgame.
- 1:36:19What Baylor's band has come
- 1:36:20alive of late.
- 1:36:21Good.
- 1:36:22Unbelievable.
- 1:36:23And Dave Winfield about it.
- 1:36:25But just the last thought on
- 1:36:26Bobby Mercer's spittoon because.
- 1:36:28He's been using cups that we
- 1:36:31drink coffee in.
- 1:36:32And I have nightmares thinking I
- 1:36:34don't know what to do.
- 1:36:38All right.
- 1:36:38The infields in this is dangerous
- 1:36:40with Winfield up.
- 1:36:42He takes a strike.
- 1:36:45I'm surprised they don't call
- 1:36:46time out.
- 1:36:48And go and check their insurance
- 1:36:50policy.
- 1:36:50Yeah.
- 1:36:51And also.
- 1:36:54Bring the right hander in a
- 1:36:55pitch to Winfield.
- 1:36:58Well Quisenberry is not throwing
- 1:37:00the ball.
- 1:37:05Oh go in the seats.
- 1:37:07Watson over but he's going to
- 1:37:08run out of room.
- 1:37:15Nothing in true on Dave
- 1:37:16Winfield.
- 1:37:19One man out and.
- 1:37:20That quickly we have a tie ball
- 1:37:22game.
- 1:37:25I get the feeling Bill that.
- 1:37:27Even though this young man
- 1:37:28pitched a.
- 1:37:28Strong nine innings against the
- 1:37:30Yankees.
- 1:37:30They.
- 1:37:31Have a pattern of running out of
- 1:37:33gas.
- 1:37:34All right.
- 1:37:35There's Bailor at third Zimmer
- 1:37:36telling him.
- 1:37:38Heads up don't be picked off.
- 1:37:48And Winfield's gone in a second
- 1:37:49he's out but they run scores on
- 1:37:51the base hit.
- 1:37:53And the Yankees take a four to
- 1:37:54three lead.
- 1:38:03It is again.
- 1:38:04Hard at ball Brett was handcuffed
- 1:38:06by it.
- 1:38:07And Leon Roberts as Baylor scores
- 1:38:09Roberts will make a strong throw
- 1:38:11in the second base.
- 1:38:14And even though Winfield goes
- 1:38:16head first.
- 1:38:18He is tagged out.
- 1:38:19By Frank White.
- 1:38:20And.
- 1:38:23Boy an exciting inning.
- 1:38:25Yankees lead it now four to
- 1:38:27three.
- 1:38:28And Steve kept the batter.
- 1:38:31Why did deep left center.
- 1:38:34Sheridan.
- 1:38:36A one hands it.
- 1:38:38Oh they did tattoo black that
- 1:38:39inning.
- 1:38:40Three big run.
- 1:38:43On four hits nobody left at the
- 1:38:46end of six as Frank Messer will
- 1:38:47carry you along.
- 1:38:48And.
- 1:38:50Four in the Royals three.
- 1:38:57We got to the seventh inning
- 1:38:58here at Yankee Stadium with the
- 1:39:00Yankees out in front for the
- 1:39:01first time in the ballgame four
- 1:39:02to three the Yankees four run
- 1:39:04seven hits the Royals three runs
- 1:39:0510 hits and it has been an
- 1:39:07errorless ballgame.
- 1:39:09My Yankee fans are really happy
- 1:39:10aren't they.
- 1:39:13Well Dale Murray has the lead
- 1:39:15now let's see if he can hold it
- 1:39:16off the set position and nips
- 1:39:18the outside corner on Brett.
- 1:39:20He did some job Frank when he
- 1:39:21came in Dale Murray did when he
- 1:39:23came in to replace Shane Raleigh
- 1:39:24back in the sixth inning.
- 1:39:27Boy did he struck out Sheridan
- 1:39:29on three pitches and got
- 1:39:30Washington on a ground ball off
- 1:39:31his glove.
- 1:39:32And that will be a base hit.
- 1:39:41That number 11 here it is again.
- 1:39:43Well Dale just did not react to
- 1:39:45it and off the tip end of his
- 1:39:47glove and bounces out the Roy
- 1:39:49Smalley a shortstop but no play
- 1:39:51in first base.
- 1:39:55Well just as I mentioned in the
- 1:39:56bottom half of the sixth if
- 1:39:58you're trailing in a ballgame
- 1:39:59it's always a good sign and that
- 1:40:00leadoff man gets on now the
- 1:40:01Royals have their leadoff man on
- 1:40:03and their guns are out McRae and
- 1:40:05Otis to follow.
- 1:40:09Well it could be a little
- 1:40:10different story both of those
- 1:40:11guys are right handed hitters
- 1:40:13and now we've got a right handed
- 1:40:15pitcher out there and Dale
- 1:40:16Murray.
- 1:40:18Inside Dale might have found
- 1:40:20out what his problem was
- 1:40:21pitching from the stretch.
- 1:40:23Well he told me Bobby that he
- 1:40:24found out he could not pitch
- 1:40:26both ways he could pitch winding
- 1:40:27up or he could pitch off the
- 1:40:28stretch but he couldn't pitch
- 1:40:29from both positions and they
- 1:40:31settled with his work in the
- 1:40:33bullpen with Jeff Torborg and
- 1:40:36Dobbs Gala.
- 1:40:37We got to give Scala some credit
- 1:40:38out there for going out and
- 1:40:40working with these pitchers.
- 1:40:42They found out that his
- 1:40:43mechanics came back to him just
- 1:40:45working off the set position.
- 1:40:49Well whatever it is let's hope
- 1:40:50he keeps it up.
- 1:40:51Well I'll tell you.
- 1:40:54Took him half a season to find
- 1:40:56out what it was but if he can
- 1:40:57pitch the second half of the
- 1:40:59year as we know he has pitched
- 1:41:00in the past going to be a big
- 1:41:03big plus there's the ground ball
- 1:41:06if they can help.
- 1:41:08Yeah they do get to.
- 1:41:09I don't know.
- 1:41:10McCrae didn't seem to get down
- 1:41:11the line too well.
- 1:41:12Small had trouble getting the
- 1:41:14ball out of his glove.
- 1:41:15He was not.
- 1:41:15McCrae was not running well at
- 1:41:17all.
- 1:41:17I don't know if he's got a bad
- 1:41:18leg or what.
- 1:41:19Small he kind of hesitates a
- 1:41:20little bit as he flips the ball
- 1:41:22on over to Campaneras at second
- 1:41:24base and he completes the double
- 1:41:27play easily and McCrae really
- 1:41:29wasn't running that well Frank.
- 1:41:31I when small I had trouble
- 1:41:32getting the ball out I had no
- 1:41:33idea that they would get the
- 1:41:34double play.
- 1:41:35I looked out and see McCrae is
- 1:41:36not anywhere near first base and
- 1:41:41Brad had made a big hard slide
- 1:41:43into second base too.
- 1:41:46So maybe the Cray does have a
- 1:41:49slightly pulled muscle or
- 1:41:50something.
- 1:41:52And now Otis fouls one away off
- 1:41:53the right side.
- 1:41:54Either that or he was mad for
- 1:41:56hitting the ball on the ground
- 1:41:58shortstop and only McCrae would
- 1:42:02know Otis is one for three in
- 1:42:10this game.
- 1:42:11Great play by Balboni retired
- 1:42:12him in the second the balls and
- 1:42:18two strikes Yankees are leading
- 1:42:19four to three Dale Murray is now
- 1:42:34the pitcher of record Murray
- 1:42:42will throw that good sinker
- 1:42:43you'll throw a fork ball that
- 1:42:45was a fork ball right there and
- 1:42:46it was an excellent fork ball
- 1:42:47it they broke about look like 10
- 1:42:51feet.
- 1:42:52I know that's exaggerating a
- 1:42:52little bit but that's the way it
- 1:42:53looked.
- 1:42:58I'll back.
- 1:43:01Forkball will come I guess at
- 1:43:03about the same speed each time
- 1:43:05on a Bobby or can he change
- 1:43:06speeds on it.
- 1:43:08I think Dale Murray throws his
- 1:43:09fork ball the same speed he he
- 1:43:12throws a harder fork ball than
- 1:43:15and normal guys a lot of guys
- 1:43:18don't throw it as hard as he
- 1:43:19does.
- 1:43:23And it's fouled away back over
- 1:43:24the dugout.
- 1:43:25That'll be well back in the
- 1:43:26seats.
- 1:43:27In fact it made the upper deck
- 1:43:31who was the first pitcher of
- 1:43:38note to have the fork ball.
- 1:43:40Delroy face throw a fork ball.
- 1:43:42Yes that's right.
- 1:43:43He may not have been the first
- 1:43:44one of note really but that's
- 1:43:45where I first started hearing
- 1:43:46about it when face compiled that
- 1:43:48great relief record.
- 1:43:53Chuck him out.
- 1:43:55So Murray does the job here in
- 1:43:57the seventh and in the middle of
- 1:43:59the seventh inning the score the
- 1:44:00Yankees for the Royals three.
- 1:44:12Well we'll have a new program
- 1:44:13for the Yankees.
- 1:44:14Well we'll have a new pitcher
- 1:44:15for the Kansas City Royals Mike
- 1:44:18Armstrong and while he warms up
- 1:44:19I'll have a chance to tell you
- 1:44:20the Yankees will host the Detroit
- 1:44:22Tigers for a three game weekend
- 1:44:24series August 5th through 7th
- 1:44:26highlighted by Skoll Bandit
- 1:44:27Yankee tote bag night and Bobby
- 1:44:29Mercer Day here at Yankee
- 1:44:30Stadium.
- 1:44:31All fans attending the game on
- 1:44:33Saturday night August 6th will
- 1:44:34receive a Yankee tote bag
- 1:44:36compliments of Skoll Bandit and
- 1:44:38on Sunday afternoon August 7th
- 1:44:39one of the most beloved Yankees
- 1:44:41of all time Bobby Mercer will be
- 1:44:43on the Yankee tote bag night.
- 1:44:44We'll have a look at the Yankee
- 1:44:46tote bag game on Bobby Mercer
- 1:44:47Day.
- 1:44:51Mike Armstrong.
- 1:44:54Right here in the greater New
- 1:44:56York area.
- 1:44:58And these New York with a record
- 1:45:00of four wins five losses and two
- 1:45:02saves making his 32nd relief
- 1:45:05appearance.
- 1:45:07That the eight any speech is
- 1:45:08allowed forty seven.
- 1:45:11One twenty five struck out twenty
- 1:45:13seven.
- 1:45:14No it is not Frank and.
- 1:45:18I'm not sure that Dick Houser
- 1:45:19might be just one or two batters
- 1:45:21short on Mike Armstrong.
- 1:45:24And a couple of right handed
- 1:45:25hitters in the last inning when
- 1:45:27the Yankees took the lead and
- 1:45:29they left they chose to leave
- 1:45:31but black out there the left
- 1:45:32handed pitcher to take care of
- 1:45:33those right handed hitters.
- 1:45:35And now Mike Armstrong comes in
- 1:45:40he'll be pitching to Don
- 1:45:41and he will pinch it for Steve
- 1:45:44Balboni.
- 1:45:45Not only has a nine game
- 1:45:47hitting streak batting two ninety
- 1:45:48three one home run eleven runs
- 1:45:50batted in.
- 1:46:00Ball one.
- 1:46:02You know you talk about Mattingly
- 1:46:03nine game hitting streak and the
- 1:46:04way he sprays the ball around
- 1:46:06he's a good hitter.
- 1:46:08Billy Martin is going to have
- 1:46:10to make some decisions to make
- 1:46:11when he gets Griffey and Randolph
- 1:46:12back off the disabled list.
- 1:46:14I'm glad I don't have to make
- 1:46:15those decisions.
- 1:46:18Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:46:20No speaking of Mattingly is
- 1:46:22hitting streak.
- 1:46:23He's a contact hitter he does
- 1:46:25not strike out much.
- 1:46:26He sprays the ball around and.
- 1:46:30Makes a lot of contact.
- 1:46:31That makes it two and one there
- 1:46:41are the figures on Mattingly
- 1:46:42very impressive.
- 1:46:47Big arms.
- 1:46:48And the left field ball three
- 1:47:03the figures on Mike Armstrong
- 1:47:14and the left field but right at
- 1:47:15the left fielder Leon Roberts
- 1:47:17who's a left fielder.
- 1:47:25Bryce Molly will turn around
- 1:47:27and become a left hand batter.
- 1:47:29He went one for two.
- 1:47:32Against Bud Black.
- 1:47:36Almost had two for two but
- 1:47:37Willie Wilson made a great catch
- 1:47:39on him and Wilson hurt his
- 1:47:40shoulder in making that diving
- 1:47:42catch and eventually had to leave
- 1:47:44the ballgame.
- 1:47:44And the ball out in a straight
- 1:47:45away center field center fielder
- 1:47:47Sheridan hardly has to move for
- 1:47:49it.
- 1:47:50And there are two out.
- 1:47:56But black went six innings gave
- 1:47:57up four runs all earned seven
- 1:48:00hits.
- 1:48:00He did not walk anybody and he
- 1:48:01struck out to.
- 1:48:07And Rick's own batting in the
- 1:48:08number nine spot he's flying to
- 1:48:10center.
- 1:48:11And robbed of a base hit on a
- 1:48:13play by George Brett at third.
- 1:48:22In the dirt.
- 1:48:29In addition to the three men the
- 1:48:30Yankees have on the disabled
- 1:48:32list they have other nagging
- 1:48:33injuries that have not disabled
- 1:48:34players.
- 1:48:36Whinegar and gamble both with
- 1:48:37groin injuries.
- 1:48:38And.
- 1:48:39The.
- 1:48:39Reds.
- 1:48:40Right.
- 1:48:44Andre Robertson with a.
- 1:48:46Bruised hand.
- 1:48:52Reds lead the Mets 4 to 2 in the
- 1:48:53eighth inning.
- 1:48:55There we see.
- 1:48:56Bob surely the left hander and
- 1:48:58Jay how the right hander warming
- 1:48:59up for the Yankees now.
- 1:49:03And Serone takes a low breaking
- 1:49:04ball two and one.
- 1:49:05The Yankees did well as a
- 1:49:09winner.
- 1:49:09The Yankees took a low breaking
- 1:49:10ball as defeated Houston 7 to
- 1:49:123.
- 1:49:14Pittsburgh beat the Giants 3 to
- 1:49:161 in the first game of a double
- 1:49:17header no report on the second
- 1:49:18game cardinals lead the Dodgers
- 1:49:20three nothing and they're on the
- 1:49:21eighth inning now.
- 1:49:24And it's the Cubs for the
- 1:49:26Padres 2 in the seventh.
- 1:49:293 and 1 on Serone.
- 1:49:30And kind of gloomy all day the
- 1:49:32trying to burn his way through
- 1:49:33your right bomb.
- 1:49:35So wrong draws a walk.
- 1:49:38Well the Yankees have a runner
- 1:49:40with two outs and that is the
- 1:49:41first one.
- 1:49:42Issued to a Yankee batter this
- 1:49:44afternoon.
- 1:49:57We're told that Yankee trainer
- 1:49:59Gene Monahan.
- 1:50:00Aided in the rehabilitation of
- 1:50:02Dale Murray.
- 1:50:03With a special diet Murray shed
- 1:50:05a few pounds six.
- 1:50:06I'm told to be exact.
- 1:50:09Which has.
- 1:50:11Possibly been a help.
- 1:50:13Campanaro sits a fly ball to
- 1:50:14right field and that should
- 1:50:16retire the side.
- 1:50:18Picked off by Otis.
- 1:50:19No runs no hits a walk a man
- 1:50:21left we completed seven with a
- 1:50:23score the Yankees four and the
- 1:50:24Royals three.
- 1:50:32We'll take a quick look at the
- 1:50:33Texas series for the Yankees the
- 1:50:35pitcher tomorrow night will be
- 1:50:36Dave Brigetti against Mike
- 1:50:38Smithson.
- 1:50:39Tuesday night Ray Fontana against
- 1:50:40Frank Tanana and Wednesday night
- 1:50:42three Matt Keough against Charlie
- 1:50:44Huff.
- 1:50:45We will televised the ballgame
- 1:50:46Tuesday night here on the Yankee
- 1:50:49television network Don Mattingly
- 1:50:50is in the ballgame at first base.
- 1:50:52I also see Willie Mays Aikens
- 1:50:54come out on the on deck circle
- 1:50:56for the Royals so we might have
- 1:50:58a pinch hitter.
- 1:50:59For Leon Roberts there is
- 1:51:01Willie Mays Aikens.
- 1:51:05And Wathen becomes a key man
- 1:51:07right here for the Royals.
- 1:51:08He takes a strike on the first
- 1:51:10pitch from Murray.
- 1:51:18Both times Wathen has been on
- 1:51:19base this afternoon he has
- 1:51:20scored he reached on a walk and
- 1:51:22then single and came into score
- 1:51:25runs number one and two driven
- 1:51:27in both times by Frank White to
- 1:51:32strikes on Wathen there was the
- 1:51:40forkball it looked like to me
- 1:51:43although I'm a lot of way away
- 1:51:44from it more like a fastball.
- 1:51:46One of those sinking fastballs
- 1:51:48that there's Jean Monahan who
- 1:51:51has put as you said Dale Murray
- 1:51:53on a special diet and if I keep
- 1:51:57ballooning up I'm gonna have to
- 1:51:58go down and have my hand put me
- 1:51:59on a diet.
- 1:52:00I should have gone to him but
- 1:52:0215 years ago let's see 15 years
- 1:52:11ago I guess Jean Monahan might
- 1:52:12have still been battling with
- 1:52:13the ball for the Fort Lauderdale
- 1:52:16ballclub.
- 1:52:19You'd have to go all the way
- 1:52:19down to Fort Lauderdale.
- 1:52:21Yeah.
- 1:52:24That's where he started and to
- 1:52:28start you on your program he
- 1:52:30might have had you run down to
- 1:52:31Fort Lauderdale.
- 1:52:32Fifteen years ago I could have
- 1:52:34got part of the way I could do
- 1:52:35it anymore.
- 1:52:36But.
- 1:52:36Oh and to count on John Watson
- 1:52:43I'll be back and stays alive
- 1:52:45all right with an upstairs
- 1:52:46fastball Bobby Mercer a big day
- 1:52:48coming up for you here at Yankee
- 1:52:49Stadium.
- 1:52:50You're looking forward to it on
- 1:52:51the 7th of August.
- 1:52:53I never thought that there would
- 1:52:56be a day for me here at Yankee
- 1:52:58Stadium and I can see that
- 1:53:01there's a lot of people out there
- 1:53:03who are going to be here.
- 1:53:03I've been here for a long time
- 1:53:06and I've been here at Yankee
- 1:53:07Stadium and I consider it the
- 1:53:10biggest honor that I've ever had
- 1:53:11in my life.
- 1:53:14Well I have to agree it's going
- 1:53:15to be a tremendous honor for you
- 1:53:17Bob and I'm just happy it's
- 1:53:20going to be coming up August 7
- 1:53:21Bobby Mercer day here at Yankee
- 1:53:23Stadium.
- 1:53:31I'll tell you I've seen your
- 1:53:33players for several years give
- 1:53:35you that standing ovation
- 1:53:37whether you got a hit or not.
- 1:53:38And I know they're all going to
- 1:53:39be out here on August 7th.
- 1:53:41I have a few Oklahoma news here
- 1:53:42too.
- 1:53:43All right.
- 1:53:44Oh no.
- 1:53:45Kevin Harris is right there.
- 1:53:48What.
- 1:53:51Would have Oklahoma and speak in
- 1:53:53Oklahoma.
- 1:53:53Right.
- 1:53:54Yeah.
- 1:53:57There's Willie Mays Aiken so
- 1:53:58he's going to come into the game
- 1:53:59and take the place of Leon
- 1:54:01Lowe not in the field but at the
- 1:54:07plate.
- 1:54:08Yep.
- 1:54:09Now he won't take his place on
- 1:54:11the outfield.
- 1:54:14Mr.
- 1:54:14Aikens is batting three twenty
- 1:54:16four nine home runs thirty three
- 1:54:17runs batted in.
- 1:54:24He is two for ten in the series
- 1:54:26and he's going to be the first
- 1:54:30to strike one.
- 1:54:35What a difference in Dale Murray
- 1:54:37over the early part of the
- 1:54:38season.
- 1:54:45A strike.
- 1:54:47It could have happened better
- 1:54:48for the Yankees the Yankees got
- 1:54:49three key guys hit the ball now
- 1:54:51when field Baylor and Kip and
- 1:54:53now it looks like they've got
- 1:54:54a stretch run that's got to be
- 1:54:57a big plus for the Yankees in
- 1:55:01the air the left field campus
- 1:55:03after it.
- 1:55:04Up his full body catches up to
- 1:55:06it.
- 1:55:07I don't know the camp lost that
- 1:55:08ball for just a second or not or
- 1:55:10whether he's just fooled by it
- 1:55:11but he put on that late burst of
- 1:55:13speed and caught up with it.
- 1:55:15Well I think he lost the ball in
- 1:55:17the sun the sun is trying to
- 1:55:18peek through the clouds now and
- 1:55:20left field is the sun field here
- 1:55:21at Yankee Stadium during the
- 1:55:22daytime.
- 1:55:23And he did lose it there for a
- 1:55:24minute but he recovered quickly
- 1:55:26and makes an easy play of it.
- 1:55:28He flipped those glasses down
- 1:55:29that's when I think he picked
- 1:55:30the ball up again after he flipped
- 1:55:32the glasses then when he started
- 1:55:33really digging hard for it.
- 1:55:35There are two outs and Frank
- 1:55:37White the batter he's driven in
- 1:55:38two runs with a single and a
- 1:55:39triple and a ground out.
- 1:55:41Kemp asked Dave Winfield I said
- 1:55:42what about where I play guys in
- 1:55:44left field.
- 1:55:45They says just look for my brown
- 1:55:47spot where I play.
- 1:55:49The big brown spot left field
- 1:55:51where Dave Winfield stands and
- 1:55:52most of the left fielder the
- 1:55:54bot picked up bare handed and he
- 1:55:56throws him out.
- 1:55:57Nice fielding play by Murray and
- 1:55:59that will retire the side in
- 1:56:01order.
- 1:56:02And in the middle of the eighth
- 1:56:04inning the score remains the
- 1:56:05Yankees four in the Royals three
- 1:56:14space.
- 1:56:15All right Frank we've got some
- 1:56:16changes Willie Mays Aikens who
- 1:56:18went into him for Leon Roberts
- 1:56:20goes into first base and just
- 1:56:21a little bit of a
- 1:56:26little bit of a space base and
- 1:56:27John Walton who was playing
- 1:56:28first base moves out the left
- 1:56:30field in place of Leon Roberts.
- 1:56:33All right Bobby and we'll go to
- 1:56:34the bottom half of the eighth
- 1:56:35inning with Nettles but now
- 1:56:36and Baylor is scheduled up
- 1:56:37against right hander Mike
- 1:56:39Armstrong.
- 1:56:40Greg is all for three popped up
- 1:56:43bounce to the pitcher and struck
- 1:56:44out.
- 1:56:49Did that was was Willie Mays
- 1:56:50Aikens strange thing about it.
- 1:56:56It's been noted that Willie
- 1:56:58Aikens does not like the name
- 1:57:00Willie Mays Aikens.
- 1:57:02I really don't know why and what
- 1:57:03does he like Willie Willie.
- 1:57:10Well if I can think of it I will
- 1:57:12call him Willie Mays Aikens
- 1:57:13anymore.
- 1:57:14I'll try to call him Willie.
- 1:57:15I'll try to call him Willie.
- 1:57:21Take a look at the pitcher.
- 1:57:23Armstrong.
- 1:57:29Ball and two strikes on Greg.
- 1:57:31A lot of pitchers like to move
- 1:57:32that ball around in their hand
- 1:57:33that they're trying to get that
- 1:57:36feel of the ball and they'll
- 1:57:38wiggle and move the ball around
- 1:57:39in their hands a lot just to
- 1:57:40get that feel of the ball that's
- 1:57:45doing to the way that Armstrong
- 1:57:52delivers a ball to the plate he
- 1:57:53could be pretty tough on
- 1:57:55right handers he's kind of a
- 1:57:56sidearm sling it.
- 1:57:58Hi pitcher.
- 1:58:02And he works the count fall.
- 1:58:05He throws both the break in
- 1:58:06pitch and his fastball from
- 1:58:08basically the same position
- 1:58:09that he's got on his sidearm.
- 1:58:13That means the left hand hitter
- 1:58:14would get a better look at it.
- 1:58:15Right.
- 1:58:19Walked in.
- 1:58:24Second walk given up by
- 1:58:25Armstrong and the Yankees have
- 1:58:26the lead off man on the Yankees
- 1:58:28are out in front of three and
- 1:58:31Lupin on will step in who made
- 1:58:37the sixth inning when Baylor hit
- 1:58:40that ball deep to left center
- 1:58:42and he'd already made up his
- 1:58:44mind that they were going to
- 1:58:45catch it.
- 1:58:45That's the reason he was able to
- 1:58:46score on that triple.
- 1:58:51Good judgment on the bases
- 1:58:56strike one he will run or the
- 1:58:58bump but I don't know if he was
- 1:58:59going to slap at it or but it
- 1:59:22he wants it and foul.
- 1:59:26What was that act but I'll put
- 1:59:27on down there.
- 1:59:28I don't know.
- 1:59:29That was a delayed bunt swing.
- 1:59:31We'll take a look at it here.
- 1:59:34He.
- 1:59:36He knew that he made a mistake
- 1:59:37so he decided to take it out of
- 1:59:39the dirt.
- 1:59:41That's a kind of a funny way to
- 1:59:42but I don't know the Lou Bunt's
- 1:59:44very much.
- 1:59:46Normally a guy will slide the
- 1:59:48top hand up towards the barrel
- 1:59:50of the bat to.
- 1:59:51Tempt the bump.
- 1:59:54Well he has not bonded this
- 1:59:55year.
- 1:59:56He's got a lot of balls.
- 1:59:58We know that.
- 2:00:01Those is bad at that one and
- 2:00:02files it back.
- 2:00:04Well we're getting everything
- 2:00:05from Lou Padilla today.
- 2:00:10That's what you call a
- 2:00:11protection swing.
- 2:00:18Might ask you which stance
- 2:00:19vanilla is using now Bobby what
- 2:00:21number stances.
- 2:00:22Let me just take one quick look
- 2:00:24at the
- 2:00:30looks like.
- 2:00:32Yep that's 3 14 3 4 3 14.
- 2:00:35OK.
- 2:00:40In the air the center field that
- 2:00:42will not advance the runner
- 2:00:44Nuttles does go back and tag
- 2:00:45he'll force a throw from the
- 2:00:46center fielder Sheridan.
- 2:00:48But the throw is true to second
- 2:00:50baseman Frank White and Nuttles
- 2:00:52will not advance the runner
- 2:00:54Nuttles will not advance the
- 2:00:56runner.
- 2:00:56He'll stand three four teams for
- 2:00:58a week or so.
- 2:01:02There's the there's our
- 2:01:04attendance this afternoon thirty
- 2:01:05three thousand nine hundred and
- 2:01:07forty four.
- 2:01:08So the three openings against
- 2:01:09Kansas City have drawn one
- 2:01:10hundred and fifteen thousand
- 2:01:12six hundred.
- 2:01:19Baylor pops it up on the right
- 2:01:21side of the field.
- 2:01:22Two down.
- 2:01:24I'm sure of the weather had not
- 2:01:25been threatening all morning and
- 2:01:27we had some heavy rain all
- 2:01:28around the area earlier today
- 2:01:30that this crowd would have been
- 2:01:32the third consecutive 40
- 2:01:34thousand plus crowd for the
- 2:01:35series.
- 2:01:40Here's Dave Winfield.
- 2:01:41Minnesota is now defeated.
- 2:01:47Who are they playing a change in
- 2:01:48the.
- 2:01:48I'm not sure.
- 2:01:50I'm not sure.
- 2:01:51I'm not sure.
- 2:01:51I'm not sure.
- 2:01:52Excuse me.
- 2:01:52Cleveland.
- 2:01:53Seven to five.
- 2:01:55I was looking up and I looked
- 2:01:56away and then James the board on
- 2:01:58me.
- 2:01:58And Cincinnati beat the Mets
- 2:02:00four to two.
- 2:02:01We told the earlier Montreal
- 2:02:03trip Houston up seven to three.
- 2:02:06Cardinals beat the Dodgers
- 2:02:07threes at Winfield up.
- 2:02:12Had an average attendance of
- 2:02:13thirty eight thousand five
- 2:02:14hundred and thirty three four
- 2:02:15game per game for this three
- 2:02:18game.
- 2:02:19That's a little too shabby.
- 2:02:20Now somebody tell me how far
- 2:02:22Winfield hit that home run into
- 2:02:23the monuments out there his
- 2:02:24first time up.
- 2:02:25Got to be 450 or 460.
- 2:02:27Yeah.
- 2:02:28At least.
- 2:02:29Scooter said he thought about
- 2:02:30470 to 75.
- 2:02:34Broke his bat.
- 2:02:34He's going to get a base hit.
- 2:02:37Splittered the bat and that
- 2:02:38also is going to go to third.
- 2:02:40When field goes halfway to
- 2:02:42second and retreats as the throw
- 2:02:43comes in.
- 2:02:44Winfield has his third hit of
- 2:02:45the game.
- 2:02:50Well we'll take a look at it.
- 2:02:51He was fooled a little bit.
- 2:02:52The pitch was way on the outside
- 2:02:54part of the plate.
- 2:02:54He just actually just threw his
- 2:02:55bat at it.
- 2:02:57And but he happened to get a
- 2:02:59good part of the ball and we see
- 2:03:00Greg Nettles going from first to
- 2:03:02third.
- 2:03:03The ball was not hit that hard
- 2:03:05out in the center field and it
- 2:03:06took the center fielder Sherrod
- 2:03:08in a long time to get to it.
- 2:03:11Well that's where Winfield's
- 2:03:12home run went Bobby.
- 2:03:15Well we've got it covered we
- 2:03:16saved 450 460 or 470.
- 2:03:18So take your pick.
- 2:03:21I just settled for a six dollar
- 2:03:22cab ride.
- 2:03:27Winfield may not have been too
- 2:03:28happy being dropped down to the
- 2:03:30number five spot on the
- 2:03:31batting order.
- 2:03:31Took it out on the baseball this
- 2:03:32afternoon and the Royals
- 2:03:33pitchers.
- 2:03:35Steve Campbell for three runners
- 2:03:37first and third two outs.
- 2:03:38Mr. Armstrong spins the ball
- 2:03:40around.
- 2:03:40Gets the right grip he wants.
- 2:03:44All one to camp.
- 2:03:54Camp went for four one game of
- 2:03:56the series.
- 2:03:57Don Hood is up for Kansas City.
- 2:03:59Don Hood is now up in the Kansas
- 2:04:01City Royal bullpen.
- 2:04:08Nice play by the Kansas City
- 2:04:10Royal bullpen.
- 2:04:10Nice play by the catcher slot.
- 2:04:13And the Yankees seem to have
- 2:04:15some action out in their bullpen
- 2:04:16it looked like George Frazier a
- 2:04:17right hander and Bob Shirley the
- 2:04:19left hander.
- 2:04:21We'll take a look at this.
- 2:04:23Pitch down in the dirt and a
- 2:04:25nice play by the catcher slot.
- 2:04:28There's Bob Shirley.
- 2:04:29Excuse me that's Jay Howell the
- 2:04:30right hander warming up.
- 2:04:36Two ball no strikeout on camp he
- 2:04:38has a great play by the Yankees
- 2:04:40on the right.
- 2:04:41Ball for four night for Steve.
- 2:04:45Hopped it up on the left side
- 2:04:47and third baseman Brett hardly
- 2:04:51had to take a step that will
- 2:04:53retire the side the Yankees get
- 2:04:55no runs have one hit they leave
- 2:04:56two on and at the end of eight
- 2:04:58it's the Yankees for the Royals
- 2:05:00three.
- 2:05:05All right Frank we've got some
- 2:05:06changes in the Yankee outfield
- 2:05:08and the Yankees are in the
- 2:05:09middle of the field.
- 2:05:11Jerry Muffrey now goes in to
- 2:05:12play centerfield for the Yankees
- 2:05:14and Dave Winfield moves from
- 2:05:17centerfield back in his old
- 2:05:19position left field.
- 2:05:21So he'll pick up the brown spot
- 2:05:22out there now.
- 2:05:23He knows exactly where it is and
- 2:05:25as I look at him he's playing
- 2:05:26right on it.
- 2:05:26Yes he is.
- 2:05:28Don slot leads up and evidently
- 2:05:32took the bat away no strike call
- 2:05:34and he's got a good shot I
- 2:05:39remember when Frank Howard played
- 2:05:40left field for the Washington
- 2:05:42Senators he would move back and
- 2:05:43forth and have a patch of grass
- 2:05:45just worn completely out.
- 2:05:46He never stood still a second
- 2:05:48the most nervous man I ever saw
- 2:05:50in the outfield two balls and no
- 2:05:53strikes.
- 2:05:54Well he was a big enough guy to
- 2:05:55wear a patch out or a big wear a
- 2:05:57hole in the one he comes spring
- 2:06:00training put weights on his
- 2:06:02back and forth with all spring
- 2:06:04training put about a three five
- 2:06:07pound weight on each who grounds
- 2:06:09it right at Smalley Roy waits on
- 2:06:11it knows he has plenty of time
- 2:06:13and throws him out one away the
- 2:06:17Yankees are leading by a score
- 2:06:18of four to three one away here
- 2:06:20in the top of the night unless
- 2:06:21the Frank Howard way 300 right
- 2:06:25around 300 I think she listened
- 2:06:27his plane weight somewhere
- 2:06:27around 270 280.
- 2:06:29Goodness he didn't need any leg
- 2:06:31training.
- 2:06:32He would do that to take off
- 2:06:34weight really in spring
- 2:06:35training as the story was
- 2:06:36circulated.
- 2:06:37Two guys seem to come off will
- 2:06:39have a good spring training
- 2:06:40with Frank Howard and Morgue
- 2:06:41Powell.
- 2:06:42Yeah.
- 2:06:42Paul come came in one year at
- 2:06:44300 pounds that sure it is the
- 2:06:51first man Murray faced when he
- 2:06:53relieved Shane Raleigh in the
- 2:06:54sixth inning and he struck
- 2:06:55out on three pitches ball and a
- 2:07:02strike.
- 2:07:03Del Murray's got good location
- 2:07:04on his ball.
- 2:07:05Now he threw him a good fork
- 2:07:06ball on the outside part of the
- 2:07:07plate and he tried to bust the
- 2:07:09fastball in on him.
- 2:07:12He looks comfortable on the
- 2:07:13mound that's in the upper deck
- 2:07:18out of play ball and two strikes
- 2:07:21I never did like to face Del
- 2:07:22Murray.
- 2:07:24I didn't like it.
- 2:07:25I didn't like that for ball and
- 2:07:26he had I didn't like that hard
- 2:07:28sinker that he threw.
- 2:07:29What was what pitch was it you
- 2:07:30hit for the home run that broke
- 2:07:31his consecutive fastball
- 2:07:32fastball.
- 2:07:33Yeah that evens account to and
- 2:07:40two three and two two hundred
- 2:07:57and forty seven and a third
- 2:07:58innings without allowing a home
- 2:08:00run until he threw a fastball
- 2:08:01game.
- 2:08:02That's a lot of innings pitched
- 2:08:11madly.
- 2:08:11How about that play.
- 2:08:15I never thought he'd get that
- 2:08:16one.
- 2:08:18Well look at the high fives on
- 2:08:19the stands over that one.
- 2:08:20Well this is a line drive right
- 2:08:22at Mattingly and he times this
- 2:08:24ball perfectly and makes a
- 2:08:27tremendous leap in the air and
- 2:08:30saves a double for the Yankees
- 2:08:34race play by Don Mattingly.
- 2:08:36He's a good defensive first
- 2:08:37baseman.
- 2:08:39He came to play it any.
- 2:08:42All right.
- 2:08:43There are two down.
- 2:08:45Oh what a play by Mattingly.
- 2:08:46I don't think Mattingly likes
- 2:08:48Columbus said well he probably
- 2:08:49likes the town but he knows that
- 2:08:51there's only one place to play
- 2:08:52and that's in the big leagues.
- 2:08:53That's right.
- 2:08:54Well he's got that 100 percent
- 2:08:56right.
- 2:08:56He's got that 100 percent right.
- 2:09:02You are Washington tries to
- 2:09:04put himself on and fouls it up.
- 2:09:07UL is 0 for 4 and 1 for 17 in
- 2:09:10the series.
- 2:09:14You know George Brett was 0 for
- 2:09:1610 before he got his single up
- 2:09:18back in the first inning.
- 2:09:18Yeah.
- 2:09:190 for 10 is like a major slump to
- 2:09:21a guy like George Brett.
- 2:09:22That's right.
- 2:09:23He's got that one count back a
- 2:09:24little bit in the right field.
- 2:09:27So it appeared.
- 2:09:28Kim took a couple of the thing
- 2:09:30you want to do here Frank is not
- 2:09:32let anybody was take a look at
- 2:09:33Billy Martin there and we don't
- 2:09:35want to give anybody an extra
- 2:09:36base hit if they can afford not
- 2:09:38to.
- 2:09:39So they'll try to play a little
- 2:09:41deeper now the outfielders were
- 2:09:42then they then they would early
- 2:09:44in the ballgame because they
- 2:09:45want to keep the ball in front
- 2:09:46of them.
- 2:09:48Now Billy wants to have to go
- 2:09:50more towards center and move to
- 2:09:51his right.
- 2:09:52He's not going to get a ball.
- 2:09:53Yep.
- 2:09:55Sightling to his right.
- 2:09:59No ball to strikeout on
- 2:10:00Washington.
- 2:10:01Two outs the Yankees lead for
- 2:10:03three.
- 2:10:05Listen to the fans in the
- 2:10:06background.
- 2:10:09And look at them.
- 2:10:10They want this strikeout Frank
- 2:10:11and I know Del Murray wants to
- 2:10:13do.
- 2:10:15Ground ball and Smalley cannot
- 2:10:17get a base hit for Washington.
- 2:10:18What a big base hit by U.L.
- 2:10:20Washington.
- 2:10:21The reason for that is is because
- 2:10:23it brings up George Brett.
- 2:10:30Billy Martin is on his way out
- 2:10:32to the mound.
- 2:10:38And we take a look at goose
- 2:10:39Gossett who is now up in the
- 2:10:41Yankee bullpen.
- 2:10:43Looks like Billy has signaled to
- 2:10:46the bullpen and I assume that it
- 2:10:50will be this guy.
- 2:10:51He will be coming in this
- 2:10:52ballgame.
- 2:10:54That's who he wants and it will
- 2:10:55be gossip.
- 2:10:56No Dale Murray will leave and
- 2:10:58Gossett will come in.
- 2:11:01Murray who relieved in the sixth
- 2:11:02inning has just given up only
- 2:11:04his second hit for that ball by
- 2:11:09Sheridan was hit hard.
- 2:11:10The one that magically made the
- 2:11:11great play out and Billy may feel
- 2:11:14that Murray has run out of gas
- 2:11:15here.
- 2:11:16I don't know.
- 2:11:17Anyway he wants Gossage to
- 2:11:18pitch to Brett with a tie run at
- 2:11:20first base and two outs.
- 2:11:22This is going to be a challenge
- 2:11:25Gossage and Brett.
- 2:11:26They've had it before.
- 2:11:27Yep.
- 2:11:28And Gossage has won some and
- 2:11:29Brett has won some.
- 2:11:30It's probably even up.
- 2:11:33Well while we wait for the goose
- 2:11:34to come in I'll remind you that
- 2:11:38the Yankees will host the
- 2:11:40Detroit Tigers for a big three
- 2:11:41game weekend series August 5th
- 2:11:43through 7 highlighted by Skoll
- 2:11:45Bandit Yankee tote bag night
- 2:11:47and Bobby Mercer day here at
- 2:11:49Yankee Stadium.
- 2:11:50All fans attending the game on
- 2:11:52Saturday night August 6 will
- 2:11:54receive a Yankee tote bag
- 2:11:56compliments of Skoll Bandit and
- 2:11:58on Sunday afternoon August 7th
- 2:12:00one of the most beloved Yankees
- 2:12:02of all time Bobby Mercer will be
- 2:12:04honored here at Yankee Stadium
- 2:12:06but it will be Bobby Mercer day
- 2:12:08so don't miss these two special
- 2:12:10days something that I'm glad to
- 2:12:13see Frank the fans gave Dale
- 2:12:16Murray a big hand here he's
- 2:12:20pitched well for the Yankees the
- 2:12:21last four or five outings that
- 2:12:22he's had and as everybody know
- 2:12:25that he struggled throughout the
- 2:12:27first part of the season and the
- 2:12:30fans coming to their feet let
- 2:12:32Dale Murray know that they
- 2:12:34appreciate the job that he's
- 2:12:36done.
- 2:12:37You know Bobby Mercer as a
- 2:12:38player you know it as a
- 2:12:39broadcaster I know it Yankee fans
- 2:12:42are the most knowledgeable in
- 2:12:43the world and true when when you
- 2:12:45don't perform well they will get
- 2:12:47down on you but they're not
- 2:12:50front runners when you perform
- 2:12:52well they're with you.
- 2:12:53I think they can they can
- 2:12:55appreciate they can appreciate
- 2:12:56an injury.
- 2:12:57They can appreciate a player
- 2:12:58going out there when he's hurt
- 2:13:00and giving every effort he has
- 2:13:01got any.
- 2:13:02And I think it's the fans here
- 2:13:05in New York City are just really
- 2:13:06great great fans.
- 2:13:08They're the greatest fans and
- 2:13:10they're the best fans in the
- 2:13:12world.
- 2:13:12They're the best fans in the
- 2:13:13world.
- 2:13:14They're the best fans in the
- 2:13:15baseball and all the sports
- 2:13:17probably like you said they're
- 2:13:21very knowledgeable and probably
- 2:13:23the most knowledgeable sports
- 2:13:24fans around anywhere in the
- 2:13:25country.
- 2:13:27When you do bad they let you
- 2:13:28know when you do good they
- 2:13:29certainly like you know too.
- 2:13:30That's right.
- 2:13:31They do.
- 2:13:33And for the most part they are
- 2:13:34very very fair.
- 2:13:36All right.
- 2:13:36Here's the challenge Brett with
- 2:13:38the bat and got hit with the
- 2:13:40bat.
- 2:13:41The tag run is at first base and
- 2:13:43two up.
- 2:13:46Deep left field but slicing
- 2:13:49foul.
- 2:13:54And both got to John I can give
- 2:13:57us I have relief.
- 2:14:05U.L. Washington back to first
- 2:14:07base.
- 2:14:07The Yankees with a one run lead
- 2:14:23and now the Royals have the one
- 2:14:25run lead George Brad has just
- 2:14:38home heard and Billy Martin and
- 2:14:40the Yankees want the bat.
- 2:14:42Look at Martin.
- 2:14:42Well what they're talking about
- 2:14:43Frank is that he's got too much
- 2:14:45pine tar and you've got to have
- 2:14:48a certain amount of distance
- 2:14:49from the trademark of the bat
- 2:14:51and the pine tar and that'll
- 2:14:53leave in the field as if the game
- 2:14:54is over.
- 2:14:55Now he's just coming in.
- 2:14:57I'm not sure.
- 2:14:58They might have a legitimate
- 2:15:00bribe and the umpires are going
- 2:15:03to get together.
- 2:15:04George Brett looking around and
- 2:15:05want to know what's going on and
- 2:15:06the umpires are going to get
- 2:15:07together and talk about this
- 2:15:08thing.
- 2:15:11Well Billy Martin bounce right
- 2:15:12out of the done I've seen a call
- 2:15:14before Frank.
- 2:15:16You are not allowed to have a
- 2:15:17substance of any of any kind
- 2:15:20above the trademark.
- 2:15:21And I can't tell from here
- 2:15:23because everybody's huddled
- 2:15:24around the bat.
- 2:15:26I cannot tell from here if it's
- 2:15:28up too far.
- 2:15:28And now they're both they're
- 2:15:29out there feeling it seems as
- 2:15:30if there's some sticky stuff
- 2:15:31around there.
- 2:15:33That's Nick Bremigan with the
- 2:15:34best is going to be an
- 2:15:35interesting call.
- 2:15:41Well Brett isn't sure whether he
- 2:15:42has a home run yet or not.
- 2:15:46Now the umpires are going to
- 2:15:47walk away and talk about this
- 2:15:49and go over the rules and
- 2:15:51examine the bat.
- 2:15:53See where the pine cars in the
- 2:15:54label the trademark is.
- 2:15:57See the brown substance there.
- 2:15:58It does look like it's a pine
- 2:16:00tar.
- 2:16:01It looks like it is.
- 2:16:03Now you are not allowed to have
- 2:16:05that pine tar up that far on the
- 2:16:07bat.
- 2:16:09Billy Martin walking around
- 2:16:11waiting for the which might be
- 2:16:14an important decision.
- 2:16:17First time in a long long time
- 2:16:18I've seen the umpires huddle
- 2:16:20this long and have a meeting
- 2:16:21over.
- 2:16:22Well they're going to see what's
- 2:16:23going to happen.
- 2:16:23They're going to.
- 2:16:28Now that is the plate umpire
- 2:16:30Tim McClellan with the bat in
- 2:16:31his hand.
- 2:16:37Now they're going to measure it
- 2:16:38across home plate.
- 2:16:40I've never I've never seen this.
- 2:16:42I never have either.
- 2:16:44I don't know what I don't know
- 2:16:45what they're measuring.
- 2:16:45Right away.
- 2:16:48They might be going to call
- 2:16:51look at this but is out and
- 2:16:54teammate man is out.
- 2:16:57And having to be.
- 2:16:59Forcibly.
- 2:16:59Restrained from hitting.
- 2:17:01Light on buyer Temma.
- 2:17:03wheels.
- 2:17:07Four to three that is called out
- 2:17:09for using the illegal bat.
- 2:17:12Redfield now batting.
- 2:17:13the illegal substance on the
- 2:17:15bat.
- 2:17:16Like I said I have seen this
- 2:17:18before Frank and Gaylord Perry
- 2:17:21just took the bat away from the
- 2:17:22whole point of our Jim McLaughlin
- 2:17:24he's going to take the bat
- 2:17:26they're going to take it so they
- 2:17:27cannot take it into the
- 2:17:28American League office or
- 2:17:31wherever they take it to big
- 2:17:32salmon.
- 2:17:34Well the Yankee security person
- 2:17:36and one of the umpires quickly
- 2:17:38are chasing whoever has the bat
- 2:17:41hostages.
- 2:17:42Who ever has the bat Jose
- 2:17:43Martinez is holding Brett Bobby
- 2:17:45I've never seen this in my life.
- 2:17:47Well I've seen players called
- 2:17:49out for using an illegal bat
- 2:17:52but never never saw an important
- 2:17:55hit by a home run and have been
- 2:17:57called out to put the Royals
- 2:17:58ahead.
- 2:18:05George Brett was fighting man
- 2:18:06and whether he has a cause to be
- 2:18:09mad or not I don't have any idea
- 2:18:12the umpires made a decision.
- 2:18:15Bobby let me say this to you the
- 2:18:17fact that they tried to take the
- 2:18:20bat away and secrete the bat
- 2:18:24lends credence to the umpires
- 2:18:26call in my estimation it could
- 2:18:28be because what will happen
- 2:18:29Frank is that the umpires will
- 2:18:31take that bat and examine it and
- 2:18:33we still see Dick Houser and
- 2:18:35George Brett they're still
- 2:18:39arguing the call now with Rocky
- 2:18:41Colivino has moved in there.
- 2:18:45If I have to feel the fact that
- 2:18:47they would not allow the bat to
- 2:18:49be played by the umpires would
- 2:18:52certainly lend credence to the
- 2:18:54decision to call Brett out.
- 2:18:56I would have to agree with you
- 2:18:57Frank because they took a long
- 2:18:59time to make this decision.
- 2:19:01They talked it over two or three
- 2:19:03times we take a look at home
- 2:19:05plate umpire Jim McLeod who made
- 2:19:08the call and he might be waiting
- 2:19:12there for that bat to be
- 2:19:13retrieved.
- 2:19:15I'm sure with a controversial
- 2:19:16call like this and they will try
- 2:19:18to take this bat and have the
- 2:19:20American League office or
- 2:19:22whoever might be concerned they
- 2:19:24probably want that bad exam.
- 2:19:30What a call.
- 2:19:31I like you said I have never
- 2:19:33seen a call made like that for
- 2:19:35for it to be such an important
- 2:19:37call and deciding a ballgame.
- 2:19:39I never have either.
- 2:19:40I have seen.
- 2:19:41Well I saw Greg Nuttles lose a
- 2:19:43base hit but his bat split and
- 2:19:45they discovered Cork in the bat.
- 2:19:47I broadcast that game.
- 2:19:49I think that is the only other
- 2:19:51time I have seen an illegal bat
- 2:19:54discovered during the course of
- 2:19:55the game.
- 2:19:56I've also seen bats that have
- 2:19:57nails that have been put in it to
- 2:19:59hold it.
- 2:19:59They can keep it from chipping
- 2:20:01but for a foreign substance to
- 2:20:03be on a bat which they concluded
- 2:20:05I guess that the pine tar was too
- 2:20:07far up on the bat and not allowed
- 2:20:09to be around and that close to
- 2:20:11the trademark.
- 2:20:12And the fact they laid the bat
- 2:20:13across on blade is just like
- 2:20:15using the yardstick or a tape
- 2:20:16measure.
- 2:20:17They know exactly how well I
- 2:20:18want what I think happened there
- 2:20:19was Frank is that they were trying
- 2:20:22to decide if the contact of the
- 2:20:24ball made any contact with the
- 2:20:26pine tar being that far up on the
- 2:20:27bat.
- 2:20:29In other words judging George's
- 2:20:30red stance to where he would have
- 2:20:32made contact with the ball.
- 2:20:34So I'll be darned I have never
- 2:20:36in my life seen anything like
- 2:20:38this.
- 2:20:39I've said it Bobby so many many
- 2:20:40times you never go to a ball
- 2:20:42game that you don't see something
- 2:20:44you've never seen before.
- 2:20:45Not as dramatic as this granted
- 2:20:47but I have never seen it before.
- 2:20:49We'll be back.
- 2:20:50But well we for the benefit of
- 2:20:53our network the final score the
- 2:20:55Yankees for the Royals three
- 2:20:56will be back.
- 2:21:09Well I'll say it again to Bobby
- 2:21:12Mercer I've never seen anything
- 2:21:13like this in my life.
- 2:21:14Let me make it very definite to
- 2:21:16all our viewers the Yankees have
- 2:21:18won the ballgame by a final
- 2:21:20score of four to three as George
- 2:21:24Brett hits what appeared to be
- 2:21:26a leading home run that would
- 2:21:29give the Royals a five to four
- 2:21:30lead.
- 2:21:31I've got it.
- 2:21:32I've got to feel Bobby that Rick
- 2:21:34Sarone may have been the first
- 2:21:36one to complain about the bat.
- 2:21:38Now you of course you won't do
- 2:21:39it until the man gets it.
- 2:21:40If Brett had made out they
- 2:21:41would have said anything.
- 2:21:42That's a very good point.
- 2:21:43And I know that during the days
- 2:21:45when I played that if we fought
- 2:21:47a guy who was using an illegal
- 2:21:49an illegal bat that if there was
- 2:21:51a base hit that's when they would
- 2:21:54have the umpire check it out if
- 2:21:55they didn't get a base that they
- 2:21:56wouldn't say anything about it.
- 2:21:58All right.
- 2:21:58Let's go back to the replay
- 2:21:59quickly.
- 2:22:00Don Carney is going to show it
- 2:22:02again.
- 2:22:02Here is Brett at the plate.
- 2:22:05Now there was no doubt that when
- 2:22:08George Brett hit that ball that
- 2:22:10it was going to be a home run.
- 2:22:13And I'm sure when the umpires
- 2:22:15measured the bat across the
- 2:22:17plate they were trying to
- 2:22:18determine whether the ball hit
- 2:22:20the part of the pine tar if the
- 2:22:22pine tar had any connection with
- 2:22:24the ball when it hit the bat
- 2:22:26because they were judging his
- 2:22:28stance the distance where he
- 2:22:29would be striding into the ball
- 2:22:30to make contact.
- 2:22:32Well there's Brett down the
- 2:22:33line steps on the plate and
- 2:22:35everybody thought by now.
- 2:22:36So Ron and Martin are out there
- 2:22:39now.
- 2:22:39So Ron is the one I'm sure of
- 2:22:40that alerted the umpire to the
- 2:22:43fact that he thought Brett was
- 2:22:44using an illegal bat.
- 2:22:46A lot of times.
- 2:22:47And we can see the umpire Jim
- 2:22:49McClellan the home plate umpire
- 2:22:51taking the bat out and now the
- 2:22:52umpires are going to go out and
- 2:22:54have their first meeting.
- 2:22:56And George Brett is looking on
- 2:23:00right now.
- 2:23:00Nobody knows what the decision
- 2:23:02is going to be.
- 2:23:02But I I can guarantee you there's
- 2:23:04probably from the Royals going
- 2:23:06to be protest upon protest about
- 2:23:08this play.
- 2:23:09Well I have one question.
- 2:23:11We do not know the answer to is
- 2:23:12whether or not the bat was
- 2:23:14reclaimed by the umpire.
- 2:23:16The last time I saw the bat it
- 2:23:17was in the hands of one of the
- 2:23:19Royals headed for we presume the
- 2:23:22clubhouse with a Yankee security
- 2:23:24person in hot pursuit along with
- 2:23:27an umpire.
- 2:23:27Well I'm not sure that it makes
- 2:23:29any difference because it's a
- 2:23:30it's a judgment call by the
- 2:23:32umpires and it's strict.
- 2:23:35The facts are that you cannot
- 2:23:37use an illegal bat and have
- 2:23:38forged substance on it which
- 2:23:40makes it an illegal bat.
- 2:23:41And they're determining trying
- 2:23:43to determine whether or not the
- 2:23:45umpire is going to be reclaimed
- 2:23:47by the Yankees.
- 2:23:48So they're meaning trying to
- 2:23:49determine now whether that
- 2:23:50foreign substance which I assume
- 2:23:53that is pine tar is up too far
- 2:23:56up on the bat towards the label.
- 2:23:59Meanwhile everybody relaxed on
- 2:24:01the Kansas City Royals bench but
- 2:24:03they won't be relaxed for long
- 2:24:05Billy.
- 2:24:05Now the umpires have told Martin
- 2:24:07and the Yankee players just to
- 2:24:08leave them alone and let them
- 2:24:09decide this themselves.
- 2:24:11And side of blue in the middle
- 2:24:14of the picture there with his
- 2:24:15arms folded now McClellan
- 2:24:19walking back toward home plate
- 2:24:21with bat in hand.
- 2:24:22Remington and Brinkman with him
- 2:24:25we can almost tell there by
- 2:24:26Billy Martin's reaction that
- 2:24:28there was going to be some kind
- 2:24:29of a call in favor of the
- 2:24:30Yankees.
- 2:24:33Now that's where they're
- 2:24:34measuring the bat Frank and
- 2:24:36trying to determine where George
- 2:24:39Brett stance is.
- 2:24:40They're trying to measure the
- 2:24:41bat.
- 2:24:41They're trying to measure the
- 2:24:42bat.
- 2:24:43They're trying to measure the
- 2:24:43bat though the opposite way
- 2:24:44Brett the left hand hitter I
- 2:24:46think they might have measured
- 2:24:46it.
- 2:24:47No they don't.
- 2:24:47They don't measure it from
- 2:24:48there to been too far out there
- 2:24:49trying to determine whether
- 2:24:50there is a call.
- 2:24:51That was the out call and here
- 2:24:52comes Brett.
- 2:24:54Now the only the only thing
- 2:24:56about it is and you know George
- 2:24:58is not too happy and I can see
- 2:25:00why he wouldn't be too happy as
- 2:25:01he's restrained by the other
- 2:25:02umpires that I don't know if he
- 2:25:06made contact with any of the
- 2:25:07other umpires there.
- 2:25:08So we'll have to wait and see
- 2:25:09what happens.
- 2:25:10We'll tell everybody and we'll
- 2:25:12be back with more on this ball
- 2:25:13game.
- 2:25:14The final score Yankees four
- 2:25:15and Royals three.
- 2:25:22Well Bobby Mercer my last words
- 2:25:24on that telecast of July 24th
- 2:25:26where the Yankees have won the
- 2:25:28ballgame four to three whether
- 2:25:29you agreed with me or not I
- 2:25:31don't really remember but as you
- 2:25:33know we sort of followed that
- 2:25:34one up ladies and gentlemen we
- 2:25:36kind of tried to straighten it
- 2:25:37out tonight.
- 2:25:37The Yankees did not win the
- 2:25:38game.
- 2:25:40They were in the lead.
- 2:25:41The lead president Lee McPhail
- 2:25:43ruled it was a legal home run
- 2:25:44by George Brett and that's why
- 2:25:46we're here at Yankee Stadium
- 2:25:47tonight to pick up this game in
- 2:25:48the top half of the ninth
- 2:25:49inning with two outs and the
- 2:25:53Royals now leading five to four
- 2:25:56you know it was early in the
- 2:25:57day we weren't going to play
- 2:25:58this ball game and then all of
- 2:25:59a sudden after another ruling
- 2:26:02by a higher judge I guess one
- 2:26:05of them by the American League
- 2:26:06and his say was the number one
- 2:26:09say so here we are today to
- 2:26:11finish this ballgame and we have
- 2:26:12a new theme song here at Yankee
- 2:26:14Stadium that he late and quickly
- 2:26:16learned how to play in the Blue
- 2:26:17Ridge Mountains of Virginia on
- 2:26:19the trail of the Lonesome Tide.
- 2:26:23Let's take a look at the Yankees
- 2:26:24defensive alignment right now
- 2:26:26which may furnish you a surprise
- 2:26:27or two.
- 2:26:28Ken Griffey is at first base.
- 2:26:31Don Mattingly is at second base.
- 2:26:34But Cabaneras was there Roy
- 2:26:35Griffey was at shortstop.
- 2:26:37He was there in the original
- 2:26:38game at a third base.
- 2:26:39Greg Nuttles Dave Winfield is in
- 2:26:42left field.
- 2:26:43Now watch this next shot.
- 2:26:44Ron Goodry is in center field.
- 2:26:47That's good replaying center and
- 2:26:50the right fielder is Steve Kemp.
- 2:26:54The catcher has to be but
- 2:26:56Schweinegger because Rick's
- 2:26:57around has an eye infection.
- 2:26:59So Ron was in the July 24th
- 2:27:01game but unable to play tonight
- 2:27:03and on the mound for the
- 2:27:04Yankees.
- 2:27:04The Yankees have a chance to
- 2:27:05play under George Frazier and
- 2:27:08he'll be pitching to Hal McCrae
- 2:27:11who was on deck when Brett gets
- 2:27:13the two run home.
- 2:27:15That's quite a lineup.
- 2:27:16Frank I guess for one out I who
- 2:27:21knows this might be something
- 2:27:22new.
- 2:27:23This might be the turnaround.
- 2:27:24This is the second dive in his
- 2:27:25career.
- 2:27:25Ron Goodry has played center
- 2:27:26field his career in the major
- 2:27:28league.
- 2:27:28You remember who he took out of
- 2:27:29center field and a field play
- 2:27:31the first base.
- 2:27:32Well we must tell this a lot.
- 2:27:34Here comes Martin.
- 2:27:35Well we must tell this to fans
- 2:27:37this that these are not the same
- 2:27:39up hiring crew that was here
- 2:27:41before.
- 2:27:42Tonight's umpiring crew is Dave
- 2:27:45Phillips George Maloney Rick
- 2:27:47Reid and Tim Wilkie who were the
- 2:27:49umpires of the last night's game
- 2:27:53and the series before they're
- 2:27:54going to build a second base
- 2:27:55down.
- 2:27:56Smally steps on second and again
- 2:27:58the guy that I got.
- 2:28:00I thought I could come out and
- 2:28:01say how do you know that Brett
- 2:28:05touch second base because you
- 2:28:06were not here.
- 2:28:07That's right.
- 2:28:07They cannot officially.
- 2:28:09I don't think they can officially
- 2:28:10give him a rolling because they
- 2:28:11were not here so they didn't see
- 2:28:12it.
- 2:28:14Now the last umpires that were
- 2:28:15here before this before the
- 2:28:17original game was Tim McClellan
- 2:28:19he was behind the plate who
- 2:28:20cobalt Nick Brimigan and Joe
- 2:28:22Brinkman and those four
- 2:28:24gentlemen are not here tonight.
- 2:28:25This is a new up hiring crew.
- 2:28:27So Billy Martin is out there I
- 2:28:29think is the only one who's
- 2:28:32making a protest saying look we
- 2:28:36say that Brett missed the basis.
- 2:28:38I have an idea that Dave
- 2:28:39Phillips right there Bobby may
- 2:28:41have a sworn affidavit from one
- 2:28:42of the umpires of the other
- 2:28:43crew.
- 2:28:44Of course the umpires and the
- 2:28:45league office if we knew this
- 2:28:47was going to happen I'm sure
- 2:28:48they knew it was going to
- 2:28:49happen.
- 2:28:50So we add just a little more
- 2:28:52drama to the infamous Pines are
- 2:28:55game.
- 2:28:56We might not be through yet.
- 2:28:57But we're going to be through
- 2:28:58this game.
- 2:29:01Well a handful of people here at
- 2:29:02Yankee Stadium of course the
- 2:29:03judge did not rule until about
- 2:29:05quarter of four this afternoon
- 2:29:07the final ruling that the game
- 2:29:09would be played.
- 2:29:09Well I would assume that's
- 2:29:11going to be played under protest
- 2:29:12and just got the sign there it
- 2:29:14is the P sign from the plate
- 2:29:16umpire in this case George
- 2:29:17Monali that Billy Martin has
- 2:29:19protested this ballgame on
- 2:29:22Valley that was not a sworn
- 2:29:23affidavit from one of the other
- 2:29:27umpires.
- 2:29:31Well I don't think any of us are
- 2:29:33surprised that Billy did that or
- 2:29:35the other guy that now he would
- 2:29:37have a right to do that because
- 2:29:40this is a different umpiring
- 2:29:41crew and there's the crowd here
- 2:29:44tonight all 34 of them and Billy
- 2:29:47Martin just returned back to the
- 2:29:49dugout after making that protest
- 2:29:51and we will get this first pitch
- 2:29:53underway.
- 2:29:55What do you guess we'll get this
- 2:29:55game finished.
- 2:29:57Finally out of the books.
- 2:30:00Tell everybody they had the
- 2:30:00tarp on right about 10 minutes
- 2:30:02before this game started there
- 2:30:03was a thunder shower in the
- 2:30:04area.
- 2:30:06And a strike is called on Hal
- 2:30:08McCrae as we do start playing
- 2:30:10the first pitch of this game was
- 2:30:11thrown at six minutes past two
- 2:30:13o'clock on Sunday July 24.
- 2:30:15And the game is called on the
- 2:30:17books.
- 2:30:23Go down in the books as long as
- 2:30:25game in history.
- 2:30:26No not really.
- 2:30:27There have been suspended games
- 2:30:28picked up after a greater length
- 2:30:30of time.
- 2:30:32I say I've never seen anything
- 2:30:34like it.
- 2:30:34I've been connected with
- 2:30:36baseball in some capacity for
- 2:30:38well let's see 30 years now and
- 2:30:40we're going to play a ball on a
- 2:30:46strike on the play McCrae in
- 2:30:47this game has gone over three
- 2:30:50rather the third walk fly the
- 2:30:51center and grab it into a double
- 2:30:53play this might be the shortest
- 2:30:56televised game that you've ever
- 2:30:57done though.
- 2:30:59I'll play.
- 2:31:02Now we got the first nine
- 2:31:04innings I mean in one particular
- 2:31:06day I'm not going to get
- 2:31:07technical please.
- 2:31:08I'm not going to get technical
- 2:31:09please.
- 2:31:10I'm not going to get technical
- 2:31:11please.
- 2:31:11I'm not going to get technical
- 2:31:12please.
- 2:31:13That might be the replacements
- 2:31:15for we might mention that George
- 2:31:17Brett and Rocky Colabino and
- 2:31:20Gaylord Perry are not here
- 2:31:21tonight.
- 2:31:22They were they were they were
- 2:31:24ejected from the ballgame and
- 2:31:26suspended from this game.
- 2:31:27So they are not here tonight.
- 2:31:28Dick Houser also is not in
- 2:31:30uniform.
- 2:31:30He was rejected to if McCrae
- 2:31:33gets a base hit he'll have a 15
- 2:31:34point lead for the book I'll
- 2:31:38tell you the one of the owners
- 2:31:41of the Kansas City Royals is
- 2:31:42here watching the ballgame.
- 2:31:45Averon Pogelman who bought 49
- 2:31:47percent of the stock from Ewing
- 2:31:50Kaufman earlier this year Billy
- 2:31:52Martin the Yankee skipper
- 2:31:56Colabino and Perry are on their
- 2:31:58way to Baltimore.
- 2:31:58The Yankees are back in the
- 2:32:04top half of the ninth inning the
- 2:32:06Royals scored two runs on two
- 2:32:08hits.
- 2:32:08There were no Yankees errors
- 2:32:10and nobody left on base in the
- 2:32:12middle of the night.
- 2:32:13Five Kansas City for the Yankees
- 2:32:17the announcement was made that
- 2:32:18the four umpires who were here
- 2:32:20for the original game McClellan
- 2:32:22Cobol Brinkman and Remagen did
- 2:32:24sign a notarized affidavit
- 2:32:26stating that George Brown touched
- 2:32:28every base on his home run.
- 2:32:36Well I guess we've covered all
- 2:32:37the legal ramifications of this
- 2:32:39ballgame.
- 2:32:39Well you reckon we have.
- 2:32:41I don't know if we don't.
- 2:32:43We'll find out later.
- 2:32:46Here's the catcher.
- 2:32:47He is Don Swat.
- 2:32:50And the pitcher is supposed to be
- 2:32:54Mike Armstrong but that is
- 2:32:55the reason Barry.
- 2:32:57They have announced that
- 2:32:58Armstrong would start by
- 2:33:00Quillen Barry is on the mound.
- 2:33:03There's a lot of drama around
- 2:33:05the first Yankee hitter Don
- 2:33:06Mattingly will lead off the
- 2:33:08bottom half of the ninth inning
- 2:33:09if Mattingly should get a base
- 2:33:11hit by the Mercer he would
- 2:33:13establish a new record for
- 2:33:15consecutive game winning streak
- 2:33:17for a rookie in the major league
- 2:33:20if he gets a base in here we are
- 2:33:22told it would count as a
- 2:33:24continuation of his hitting
- 2:33:25streak which would give him 25
- 2:33:27the streak now ended the previous
- 2:33:31record twenty three consecutive
- 2:33:33games by Mike Vail of the Mets
- 2:33:35in seventy five.
- 2:33:40Well it was straight in streak
- 2:33:41his last hitting streak about
- 2:33:42fifteen games right.
- 2:33:44And so this will be a
- 2:33:45continuation if he gets a hit
- 2:33:47now of another 10 games that
- 2:33:49lapsed in between that period of
- 2:33:50time right.
- 2:33:51This is the one game out of the
- 2:33:52twenty five he did not have a
- 2:33:54hit he's been to bat only once
- 2:33:56and it's a ball and a strike
- 2:33:58Mattingly lined out to lap after
- 2:34:01replacing Steve Balboni he came
- 2:34:04to bat in the seventh inning
- 2:34:20and I'm sure both teams feel
- 2:34:21like we're going to win this
- 2:34:22game.
- 2:34:23If we're going to be here we
- 2:34:24might as well go ahead and win
- 2:34:25it.
- 2:34:28That will end the streak
- 2:34:33Sheldon is there for the catch
- 2:34:35and Mattingly is hitting streak
- 2:34:36unless the Yankees tie it up and
- 2:34:38he should come to bat again his
- 2:34:40hitting streak has ended one out
- 2:34:41in the bottom half of the night
- 2:34:45and now Royce Molly Oscar
- 2:34:50will bat for good read small he
- 2:34:55has played the entire game we're
- 2:34:57dead on the 24th all the way at
- 2:34:59shortstop fly the center single
- 2:35:01the center and fly the center
- 2:35:02again I suppose you could have
- 2:35:12done one or two things at the
- 2:35:14first two guys got on you might
- 2:35:16have been let get me but the guys
- 2:35:17over put out prison barrier this
- 2:35:22one that is including the game
- 2:35:25since the night when he was
- 2:35:27night before last when he last
- 2:35:29pitch was in various one five
- 2:35:31lost one and saved thirty two
- 2:35:33games he this is his fifty first
- 2:35:37appearance hundred and six
- 2:35:40innings ninety eight hits ten
- 2:35:41walks thirty eight strikeouts
- 2:35:47two balls on a strike the count
- 2:35:49to Royce Molly we might mention
- 2:35:57that Willie Wilson was in and
- 2:35:58out of this game so was Leon
- 2:35:59Roberts so they're not eligible
- 2:36:04and they had a left field and
- 2:36:07they were on the right field and
- 2:36:11Simpson on the warning track to
- 2:36:15down two outs in the bottom half
- 2:36:26of the night the royals are
- 2:36:27leading by a score of five to
- 2:36:28three Oscar Gamble will pass for
- 2:36:37Rod Gimli I was sitting to eighty
- 2:36:40six well after all this time and
- 2:36:46after all the media attention
- 2:36:47and everything that's going on
- 2:36:49in the court it comes down to
- 2:36:52one man Oscar Gamble the Yankees
- 2:36:54all on all the drama was built
- 2:37:02up to this particular point
- 2:37:03right now.
- 2:37:04Well down to a gamble and
- 2:37:09Quillen Barry gamble has hit
- 2:37:11seven home runs this year.
- 2:37:13Twenty two are the eyes and that
- 2:37:22may do it right.
- 2:37:25Over to John Woffin and the
- 2:37:26fine.
- 2:37:29The Yankees are three up three
- 2:37:30down here in the bottom half of
- 2:37:31the ninth inning.
- 2:37:33The final score the Kansas City
- 2:37:35Royals five and the New York
- 2:37:36Yankees for I think.
