Transcript
- 0:02Intro: No.
- 0:04Be afraid.
- 0:06Be very afraid.
- 0:15Ryan: And it's just, it's such a good hang and you're like expecting like, 'cause
- 0:20you don't know what these film series, especially if you're like watching it for
- 0:24the first time, you don't know how bad it's gonna go or how good it's gonna be.
- 0:27And so far with Phantasm, it just keeps getting better and better.
- 0:31And so far the third one is my favorite in the whole film series.
- 0:35Lord of the Dead.
- 0:37Kearns: The Lord of the J. Um, it's interesting to see what
- 0:41the nineties does, to Phantasm.
- 0:44Like, I mean, because nineties is the era of the action movie too, and this
- 0:48was definitely actiony for sure.
- 0:51Jon: I think this is the most actiony of them all.
- 0:55And then I think we're gonna get more sci-fi as we go on
- 0:59Kearns: Ooh, never gonna get a problem with that outta me.
- 1:03Ryan: I am confirming that the fourth one is the one I saw on sci-fi.
- 1:07'cause the third one, that was definitely not the one I saw on sci-fi either.
- 1:12So four times the charm guys.
- 1:14But um, know, being like a minute in, I'm gonna say this is, uh, let's
- 1:20just give a quick rundown 'cause we usually do the 20 minute in and
- 1:23Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:24Ryan: but.
- 1:25Um,
- 1:26Kearns: do the synopsis.
- 1:27Ryan: I was gonna say, it jumps right in from the second one.
- 1:30Um, Reggie gets pulled out of the hearse and everything goes haywire.
- 1:34Mike goes into a, a coma again, rejoined by a Michael Baldwin and
- 1:40Bill Thornberry, which was a fresh set of eyes to see, but they go on this.
- 1:45Another road trip basically to stop the tall man.
- 1:49tall man has Mike captured.
- 1:51Jody's the sphere, we'll get into.
- 1:53Reggie meets some
- 1:54Jon: My brothers this fear.
- 1:57Ryan: He's just, it was like a touch by the angel moment.
- 2:00I felt like when he appeared.
- 2:02I was just like, is he, is he on a, a quest right now?
- 2:05Yes.
- 2:05To stop the tall man.
- 2:07Kearns: It's like a lifetime movie.
- 2:08My brother's a sphere.
- 2:11I was wondering in this one, this one, do you get like the ambiguity
- 2:14of the tall man a little bit too?
- 2:15Like is he an alien?
- 2:16Is he a person?
- 2:17What is the tall man?
- 2:20Jon: Yeah.
- 2:21Kearns: I. They kind of, they kind of start into that a little bit.
- 2:25but no, this one felt a whole lot like watching USA up all night.
- 2:29Uh, if, if you guys are a little dated like we are and we're not that dated,
- 2:32we're in our mid thirties to fifties and, um, USA up all night was where
- 2:38they would show, not like skin Max level movies, but like campy boob films.
- 2:44This one was definitely boob.
- 2:47Jon: Yeah,
- 2:48Ryan: Yes, it
- 2:49Jon: definitely bullish.
- 2:51Kearns: They leaned heavily into Reggie's favorite two things, righty and lefty.
- 2:58Ryan: I, I mean, how long it's been since his family died?
- 3:02Since the second film.
- 3:03It's two, three years.
- 3:05Kearns: He immediately, immediately drowned his sorrows in trying to get
- 3:09laid in the, the, the hitchhiker.
- 3:12And then in the third movie, he did not, he did not slow down whatsoever.
- 3:18Jon: No.
- 3:19Ryan: He tries with the Looter Edna,
- 3:21Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 3:23Ryan: and then he goes for Rocky.
- 3:24And I mean, that's questionable because that, that dream sequence goes into
- 3:29reality and in the dream, was it real?
- 3:31Was it fake?
- 3:32I don't know.
- 3:33He rescues Mike in that scene.
- 3:35I mean,
- 3:36Jon: he also makes a little kid sleep outside in the car
- 3:39so he can try to get laid.
- 3:41I.
- 3:42Kearns: Huh.
- 3:45Jon: Tim, you're sleeping in the car tonight.
- 3:48Ryan: He agrees with it though.
- 3:49He's like, yeah, I got you Reggie.
- 3:51He's a good man.
- 3:53Jon: I mean, he sort of gets it with Reggie, like over rocky
- 3:57shoulder, like Yeah, yeah.
- 3:59You're, you're finding the car, right?
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:02He's sort of like the reluctant, I can't say no agreement.
- 4:07Ryan: And then he gets handcuffed to the bed at the end of it.
- 4:10Jon: All that, and he doesn't even get any.
- 4:13Ryan: Nope.
- 4:14He is the live action version of Leisure Suit.
- 4:17Larry, they should have made a leisure suit Larry Movie
- 4:20and made it Reggie Banister.
- 4:22It would've worked.
- 4:23that character, Tim, he's got some cool moments in the movie, especially
- 4:26when his introduction with the looters, like the hatchet scene when he throws
- 4:30the hatchet to Edna's head, um, rufuss with the Frisbee blade, and then poor
- 4:35Henry, he just gets shot in the head.
- 4:37It's like a lukewarm death for him.
- 4:39But that was pretty, the Frisbee blade was pretty cool for 94, like
- 4:44wouldn't expect something like that.
- 4:45I don't know.
- 4:47Jon: From that number one, Tim is just lethal.
- 4:50Kevin.
- 4:51We can agree on that, right?
- 4:53Ryan: Fair.
- 4:54Fair on.
- 4:54Jon: He's, it's just lethal home alone at that point, you're gonna say how,
- 5:00how unique a razor blade Frisbee is.
- 5:03Not the first time I've seen one.
- 5:06Kearns: What's the other place?
- 5:12Okay.
- 5:13Jon: Nineties, like tits and Guns movie, got a bunch of playmates and a bunch of
- 5:18like nudity and Frisbee with razor blades.
- 5:22Kearns: Yeah, I was gonna say, and the most important thing of all on a trip
- 5:26to Hawaii, they should do that for Frisbee golf and really up the game,
- 5:30you know, really, really make it fun.
- 5:35Jon: Every Frisbee should just have blades attached to it.
- 5:39Kearns: I'm trying to think of what movie's got us, like the spinning
- 5:42discs of death, but Phantasm, you have the orbs of death.
- 5:45The spheres of death.
- 5:47so them making a Frisbee with razor blades to to fight is kind of funny.
- 5:52Ryan: I wanna say the running man had like this, like a circular Frisbee
- 5:56possibly, or at least circular sauce that were just like floating in air.
- 6:00Um, I, I'm trying to remember if it was during the icing
- 6:03or during the laser scene.
- 6:05another great movie.
- 6:06Kearns: Another great movie.
- 6:07We need the Bachman books to produce, um, the Long Walk.
- 6:10Like now
- 6:11Jon: Yes,
- 6:12Ryan: yes,
- 6:13Kearns: for real.
- 6:14Jon: yes.
- 6:15Kearns: so we've got, we've got this one, um, that we get pulled
- 6:17right into the action from the back of the, the hearse yoked into the
- 6:22action again, as they would say.
- 6:24Um, then where's the, like the middle point of the journey
- 6:28bringing us with Mike and Reggie?
- 6:30Where are they headed?
- 6:31Ryan: I was gonna say real quick, you miss your quadruple shotgun in the beginning,
- 6:35Kern, he blows like four lurkers out on the ground and then he like does like
- 6:40a whole thing where he shoots it in the air and they just drop one by one.
- 6:44Each lurker is like boom, boom, boom.
- 6:47And then
- 6:48Kearns: Slamming into the ground.
- 6:49Ryan: it's like, it's
- 6:50Kearns: I didn't know we.
- 6:52Ryan: Oh no.
- 6:53I mean I remember that 'cause it was just like a funny scene plus it's like
- 6:57kinda sets like what the tone is and then I'll be honest, it's the only
- 7:02type of film where I enjoy the recap 'cause uh, Coscarelli does it so well.
- 7:07'cause sometimes you see like a recap in a movie with like old clips,
- 7:11like a puppet master or something.
- 7:12It's like, oh god.
- 7:13Okay.
- 7:14But it fits so well in the Fanm universe because of like.
- 7:18The distance of years between each film, it works and I do enjoy those recaps,
- 7:23to be honest, for once in a film.
- 7:25Kearns: they needed it.
- 7:26What was it?
- 7:26Nine years?
- 7:28Ryan: yeah,
- 7:29Kearns: 88 to 94.
- 7:32Six years.
- 7:33Ryan: six years.
- 7:33Six years, I.
- 7:34Kearns: Uh, it's not too long.
- 7:35That's not too long.
- 7:36Not like the first one was a big jump.
- 7:38from movie one to two rather.
- 7:40So yeah.
- 7:41What were the standouts for the, uh, nineties version compared to the seventies
- 7:44version and the eighties version?
- 7:46It's like once a decade you get a Phantasm.
- 7:48Jon: I, I like that he sort of upgrades the spheres with every movie.
- 7:54they become a little more complex now.
- 7:56They kind of have brains and they have the ability to like have a
- 8:01consciousness like my brother, the sphere, but really is in fear.
- 8:07Kearns: Gotcha.
- 8:08Jon: definitely like that touch.
- 8:10Ryan: It's like invasion of the body snatchers in a way.
- 8:13It's like harvesting the brains in the sphere.
- 8:15Like have like their own, I guess their own thought process
- 8:19because Jodi breaks through.
- 8:21So it kind of questions like, can the other spheres break through?
- 8:25Like do they have, like, they have to have a mind of their own,
- 8:28like how are they controlling it?
- 8:29And it kind of makes, you wanna see a fourth, the fourth one, and of
- 8:32course the fifth one, just to see if they'll answer that question.
- 8:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:40Well, there's another one for the decade of the nineties.
- 8:42This, I think that's the only double up, uh, decade.
- 8:45So Phantasm four takes place in light.
- 8:47I was came out in 98, maybe
- 8:50Ryan: Yep.
- 8:5098.
- 8:51Kearns: something,
- 8:52Ryan: It
- 8:53Kearns: and then 2016 we jump all the way to 2016 for Phantasm five.
- 9:02All.
- 9:03Ravager, it's all Coscarelli, right?
- 9:05There's no like rogue directors?
- 9:07No.
- 9:08Okay.
- 9:11Ryan: I was.
- 9:11Jon: A.
- 9:13Kearns: Oh, money grab.
- 9:20It's like when, uh, Abrams and Spielberg get together, you know,
- 9:23you know what's going on there.
- 9:24I.
- 9:25Jon: Thing we missed out with the fan is the JJ abrasion
- 9:32Kearns: Oh,
- 9:33Jon: he did the rema, his company did the rema.
- 9:38Kearns: his company did.
- 9:40Jon: It's a bad robot.
- 9:43Ryan: I thought it was Anchor Bay.
- 9:45I have an Anchor Bay Edition.
- 9:47Jon: Yeah.
- 9:47There is an anchor.
- 9:49There is an anchor bay one, but um, bad robot did the remaster.
- 9:54They came out around the time.
- 9:56Ryan: Oh, that's gotta
- 9:57Kearns: Okay.
- 9:57Ryan: that if that, that's with the painting on the cover
- 10:00are, it's like a painting on
- 10:01Jon: Yes.
- 10:01Ryan: was like painted on.
- 10:02Oh yeah.
- 10:03That was a nice, that was a nice cover.
- 10:05Just Angus Grimm right in your face like young Angus Grimm.
- 10:11Kearns: The sexy one,
- 10:12Ryan: Yeah,
- 10:15just,
- 10:15Kearns: I guess he has two other versions that could qualify.
- 10:18Ryan: just writing those liner notes in the background.
- 10:21I still can't believe that I was thinking about that.
- 10:23I was doing the short.
- 10:24I'm like, man, I've listened to some Beatles songs and I, all I can dig
- 10:28is the tall man, just like in the background holding a sphere or two.
- 10:32Kearns: So three, three in a lot of ways, um, it, it kind of leaves horror
- 10:37and moves towards action a little bit, but it has a similar, like on the
- 10:41Dusty Road vibe, they're continuing to travel through towns that have
- 10:45been destroyed by Angus Angus Scrim.
- 10:48what a name.
- 10:49Yeah.
- 10:49So they're, they're, they're aming their way through.
- 10:53Right.
- 10:53And then they're also finding other rageful people to
- 10:58kill the tall man with them.
- 11:00And that's Reggie's lust gets, you know, brought up there too.
- 11:04But, um, there's a little boy too, a murderous little boy.
- 11:09What's the deal with him?
- 11:17Jon: Really resourceful.
- 11:18And Reggie drag, he drags himself along with Reggie.
- 11:23Reggie keeps trying to pawn him off like he finds like an orphanage.
- 11:27And, uh, Tim, you're gonna stay here.
- 11:29That doesn't take, you know, he doesn't want him with him.
- 11:32Kearns: Well, that's because Reggie's, he's stag now.
- 11:35His family blew up now he's, he's living his best life out there.
- 11:38You know, single reg.
- 11:40Jon: No, Tim?
- 11:40No Mike, no.
- 11:41Nobody to get in the way of Reggie getting laid
- 11:44Kearns: Exactly.
- 11:46So, and then, uh, that's actually a funny little trope.
- 11:49The unwanted orphan.
- 11:53Ryan: He paid that woman like 200 bucks and like he still
- 11:57still got stuck with them.
- 11:59But Tim saves him.
- 12:01He saves him the revolver
- 12:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 12:04You knew he would, you knew he would.
- 12:07Ryan: But that leads to
- 12:08Kearns: Well.
- 12:09Ryan: first,
- 12:12oh God, even in that scene, he gets like handcuffed and like pushed around by, um,
- 12:18Tanisha and Rocky and it's like, he's like trying to warn him and they're just like,
- 12:23I don't know what you're talking about.
- 12:24Because their whole, again, the whole town's ravaged, so
- 12:27it's like everything's gone.
- 12:28It's deserted, there's scavengers.
- 12:31It's.
- 12:32Everyone's become a scavenger by that time.
- 12:34It's got, you know, I was thinking it's not like that.
- 12:36It's like that dark tower vibe, but it's also like a mad Max vibe as well.
- 12:40You know, you just mix missing Max Roth, steady.
- 12:43I.
- 12:43Jon: Yeah.
- 12:44The other thing, thing I'm starting to pick it get into there is where the matrix
- 12:49could have been influenced from this.
- 12:51Because when you start to get into that dream stuff, it's almost like it's, and
- 12:57it will really get into like of what's reality versus what's actually reality.
- 13:04You definitely like as it, you can sort of sense it's starting to come, but
- 13:08when you get especially to five, there's stuff that's like very matrix feeling.
- 13:14Kearns: I like that though because that's the idea of a Phantasm.
- 13:16It stays true to the, the whole plot, you know what I mean?
- 13:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:22Kearns: The whole beginning of the, the story that is, um, where you're
- 13:27not sure you're in a state of dementia.
- 13:31Ryan: And
- 13:31Kearns: Of Vibe.
- 13:32Ryan: they really play with that in this one 'cause it's like in and out through
- 13:36dreams throughout the entire time.
- 13:38Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 13:39Ryan: Or at least how he wrote it, because it's like one minute, it's like a
- 13:41dream sequence and we know it's a dream, you know, Jody's like, come on Reg.
- 13:47And he's trying to have sex with Rocky.
- 13:49He's like, come on, you gotta, you know, gotta leave me alone, Jody.
- 13:52And Jody's like, all right, you know, it's a dream.
- 13:55And he's like, we gotta save Mike.
- 13:58they find Mike strapped, uh, strapped in with the tall man
- 14:01and stuff, and they rescue him.
- 14:02And then they're back in the real world.
- 14:04So it's like what is real?
- 14:06What is fake?
- 14:07It is the fanm.
- 14:09You know, they are going into mania slowly but surely.
- 14:12Jon: Yeah, definitely.
- 14:12They, they definitely, start to lose track of where, what the actual reality is.
- 14:21Maybe my brother isn't really
- 14:23Ryan: He's a burnt out sphere.
- 14:28Jon: bad.
- 14:30Ryan: Oh.
- 14:30After like he's like all charred now, but he's still able to move like.
- 14:36We'll talk about like the goons and stuff later on, the looters and all
- 14:40that, but that scene where it gets rufuss, it's a pretty cool scene.
- 14:45the practical effects in in this film were pretty well, well done.
- 14:48I think it was like a $2 million budget in this one, 2,600,000.
- 14:53Kearns: 94.
- 14:54That's, that's pretty interesting.
- 14:56You know, to stretch 2 million in 94 is a hell of a lot different than an 88.
- 15:00Ryan: I, this has been on a rollercoaster ride of like budgets.
- 15:03It starts from 300,000, from Phantasm to 3 million to, I apologize.
- 15:09I'm gonna go back.
- 15:10It was 2,500,000 on the budget.
- 15:13And then by the fourth one, that's when it starts.
- 15:15I. Decreasing again, but we will see.
- 15:20Kearns: Uh, they, they produced the horror movie level stuff in the fourth one.
- 15:24Pretty sure.
- 15:25Jon: So what, what happens with the third is it almost gets canceled anyway.
- 15:30So the guy at Universal who was like gung ho about getting this made.
- 15:36Uh, Roger Blattner, who died in a plane crash before Phantasm three.
- 15:41I don't, I don't even think there was a script yet, but he had
- 15:44green lit. He was like, I'll go.
- 15:46So the guy who replaced him decided he was going to honor all the existing deals,
- 15:53but not to the level that the.
- 15:59Ryan: Okay.
- 16:00Jon: decide no theatrical run for Phantasm three.
- 16:03Coscarelli had put in his contract that if they decided there would
- 16:07be no theatrical run, it would get like two weeks trial in two cities.
- 16:12So it actually plays in Grand Rapids and Baton Rouge.
- 16:18Ryan: And it was the highest grossing right?
- 16:20Jon: Yeah, it did really well in those two cities, but that was it.
- 16:25And then doesn't get Blockbuster, so block it.
- 16:30Blockbuster didn't carry it initially.
- 16:33It's a direct, it got caught up in a feud between Universal
- 16:37McDonald's and Blockbuster.
- 16:42Yeah, I didn't EI ne I never knew this, but in that like 94, 95 was doing,
- 16:50a burger, get a VHS tape for five.
- 16:55Kearns: Oh my God, yes.
- 16:57Jon: So wasn't part of that, but like, you're gonna cut us out of this and
- 17:04sell movies for $5 at McDonald's.
- 17:07But they didn't quite have, have the nerve to say, that's it.
- 17:11We're not taking any universal movies.
- 17:13They just took the top tier ones and everything below.
- 17:17They were like, Nope, we're not gonna stock that.
- 17:19Kearns: Yeah.
- 17:20Jon: Phantasm three gets cut out of, out of Blockbuster as well.
- 17:24Interestingly, I got really curious about this and I wanted to, number
- 17:28one, I didn't believe that this was true because how did I miss this?
- 17:31Like I was, that was my prime McDonald's eating era and like the very
- 17:36beginning of my VHS collecting era.
- 17:38So how did I miss that?
- 17:41There's a copy of Field of Dreams with the golden arches on it.
- 17:47No way for five bucks.
- 17:50They're sticking to the original price too.
- 17:51It's honorable.
- 17:53Ryan: Two, five.
- 17:54Kearns: I don't know.
- 17:58We had, we carried this damn ninja Turtles cups from Mickey
- 18:01D's for like a billion years.
- 18:03I. Like a billion, um, and stuff like that.
- 18:07Those were, those were hot commodity items.
- 18:09All the, if you had a glass, glass for Mickey D's when that was going on.
- 18:14Ryan: The be in forever
- 18:16Kearns: Yep.
- 18:17Ryan: crystallized.
- 18:19Jon: In the seventies, they had ones with like their, the
- 18:22McDonald's characters on them,
- 18:24Ryan: that's
- 18:25Kearns: Oh, nice.
- 18:25Jon: allowed.
- 18:26We had all of them, but we were never allowed to because it turned
- 18:30out there was, it was like lead.
- 18:32Kearns: Oh my God, dude,
- 18:34Ryan: I
- 18:34Kearns: like asbestos,
- 18:37Ryan: I was waiting for you to say it's a collector's item.
- 18:39'cause that's like
- 18:40Kearns: it.
- 18:41Jon: it's probably worth a fortune, but No, no, we weren't
- 18:44allowed to because there in.
- 18:48Kearns: It would most certainly be worth the fortune 'cause they, uh, they likely
- 18:51destroyed many of them, and that means that there's not many in circulation.
- 18:56And then also you add the niche aspect of it poisoned kids.
- 19:00That's why your uncle Larry's always mad because he drank outta one
- 19:04of those every day for 17 years.
- 19:07Yeah.
- 19:07There you go.
- 19:09There you go.
- 19:10I think that's what lead did, right?
- 19:11Made everybody mad.
- 19:12And RFK told us they put fluoride in the water to calm everybody down.
- 19:20Oh, this is a Phantasm.
- 19:22We're living in a Phantasm.
- 19:27but that's amazing.
- 19:29That whole arc, McDonald's blockbuster arc is amazing and something I
- 19:33never, ever would've guessed.
- 19:36Um, did they ever start carrying it at Blockbuster?
- 19:39Jon: I think eventually, because I think I did at some point rent
- 19:42that from Blockbuster, but it
- 19:44Kearns: Okay.
- 19:45Jon: it was not a time that would've been meaningful for Coscarelli, the series,
- 19:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 19:52Jon: especially being direct to video.
- 19:54Ryan: I think it would've been a big seller at Blockbuster,
- 19:56especially at that time.
- 19:57'cause
- 19:58Jon: Absolutely.
- 20:00Ryan: horror film on Friday night and it's like, oh, this
- 20:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:03Ryan: Direct a video or
- 20:04Jon: Yeah.
- 20:04Ryan: Like brings more people to
- 20:06Jon: Yeah.
- 20:08Ryan: your
- 20:08Jon: And like,
- 20:09Ryan: or Sam Goody.
- 20:10Jon: yeah.
- 20:14Blockbuster put out a lot of the mom and pops, so you couldn't go up the street
- 20:19to one of those to get Phantasm three.
- 20:22You just, and you didn't have the Hollywood videos and the real challengers,
- 20:26at least in this area that time.
- 20:30So, you know, you get, you get a movie that can't get distribution.
- 20:33Kearns: I forgot about Hollywood video.
- 20:35How dare they?
- 20:37How dare they?
- 20:38That's not their lawn.
- 20:40Stay back.
- 20:41The little like dinky hole in the wall Video stores.
- 20:45Yeah, keep them around.
- 20:46There's always some guy there that you wanna run into.
- 20:48He knows like he knows things about things.
- 20:51Ryan: And then you had the, uh, bead at room in the back.
- 20:54Jon: Yeah,
- 20:55Ryan: there
- 20:56Jon: there.
- 20:56Ryan: not
- 20:57Kearns: Yeah.
- 20:57There's always a curtain or like an accordion door.
- 21:03Yep.
- 21:04That was one stop video.
- 21:06They had the saloon doors, right?
- 21:08Jon: Okay.
- 21:08The one in the Bazaar Mall had them too.
- 21:11Kearns: Oh, I didn't know that they had those in the Bizarre mall too.
- 21:15Jon: Yeah, man.
- 21:16Kearns: Kids are going to try on jeans and you're picking up smut right next door.
- 21:20Jon: they also had like I spit on your grave and a couple of other movies,
- 21:24like out with the regular stuff, but they had like cardboard over
- 21:28the covers and just like handwritten I spit on your grave on there.
- 21:32And that made me wanna see it way more.
- 21:35Kearns: Yeah, but that's part of it.
- 21:36Jon: You one, they made a taboo.
- 21:39They made it a taboo movie.
- 21:40And then it's like, now I have to see that.
- 21:43And then you watch it.
- 21:45That's disturbing.
- 21:46But you.
- 21:48Kearns: And we were of the era too, where there was nothing else to
- 21:51do, but to pursue the forbidden.
- 21:53Literally nothing else to do.
- 21:54I mean, the internet did come around a bit as I got, uh, into my later
- 21:58teens, but it was nothing that kept you out of trouble, tell you that much.
- 22:01Nobody was sitting on the couch scrolling through shit.
- 22:03You were out and about trying to get to the nudie section at one stop video.
- 22:07Jon: You, you couldn't scroll through shit on your, on the original internet anyway.
- 22:12It would like, like you'd look at smut and like, it would like load
- 22:16like a line at a time and, okay, it's a blonde, she has a forehead.
- 22:22Kearns: And a mustache.
- 22:23Jon: it would.
- 22:28Ryan: It'll stopped
- 22:29Jon: isn't.
- 22:31Ryan: loading.
- 22:33Kearns: I found more stuff like that rather than looking myself.
- 22:36I found more stuff like that when people's computers would break and
- 22:39they'd be like, Armenio needs help.
- 22:41His, his desktop isn't working properly.
- 22:43And I'd be like, it's a lot of zip drive disks you've got over there, Armenio.
- 22:47What are you saving on?
- 22:48Those?
- 22:49Like nothing.
- 22:50And then he would look and see exactly what he was up to for the
- 22:53last 300 hours, like Jesus Christ.
- 22:57I bet you there are archives, like people kick the bucket and people are
- 23:01just going through their stuff and finding like thousands of floppy a
- 23:06disks and stuff with random things.
- 23:09Jon: Yeah, no
- 23:11Kearns: Maybe not floppy, but definitely zip drives.
- 23:13Oh, I bet you there's some CDRs out there too, Ryan.
- 23:16Ryan: Oh God.
- 23:18Kearns: There's gonna be a lot of stuff on those CDRs.
- 23:22Ryan: There's a lot of
- 23:22Kearns: megabytes.
- 23:24Ryan: There's a lot of history to be wiped out.
- 23:27It's like cyberpunk, cyberpunk is coming alive in the real world.
- 23:32Just the whole idea of everyone gr getting, gaining information.
- 23:35I mean, we've been getting information or, uh, over the years, but it's like
- 23:39that whole technology vibe of like, it's just like one rush and it's all there.
- 23:44Kearns: Zuckerberg's trying to turn this into Ready Player One too.
- 23:47He wants like, the world sucks, but join the Metaverse.
- 23:50It'll be better, but it's not, it's not ready Player one yet.
- 23:54Ryan: we've seen The Matrix.
- 23:55It's.
- 23:57Jon: not.
- 23:59Kearns: Yeah, good point.
- 24:02Um, so segueing back to Fanta, there's not much to talk about.
- 24:07It's, it's very similar.
- 24:09I think John probably just churned up the best tidbit of trivia
- 24:13about any movie maybe on this one.
- 24:16But what else is there that makes this movie stand out?
- 24:19Any backstories, uh, things that happened on set or anything you guys are aware of?
- 24:23Ryan: it won a Fangoria Chainsaw award for its limited release, which is pretty cool.
- 24:27Kearns: That is cool.
- 24:28Jon: I mean, even, even in.
- 24:37Kearns: There was a lot of cocaine getting around at that time.
- 24:39He was probably, you know, he was busy.
- 24:42Jon: You know, they, there's talk about like the hearse stunt, you know, jumping
- 24:46to hearse and flipping it, but mostly
- 24:49Ryan: was cool.
- 24:49Jon: for the most part, that's like, yeah, like that's a great scene
- 24:53Kearns: That was their favorite thing to do in movies back then was that little
- 24:56explosion ramp that the car would drive up that would launch them to the side.
- 25:00It was in every movie from like 91 through.
- 25:05Ryan: The actress looked excited while they were heading for it.
- 25:07It was like they had enough time to move away.
- 25:10And the one character, was it Ru Rufuss, right?
- 25:12He's just like smiling, Ugh.
- 25:14But Edna, Edna takes a beating.
- 25:16She gets cracked in the face.
- 25:18She gets ran over, hatchet to the head, sphere through the head.
- 25:23She takes like the worst beating out of any character in this
- 25:27movie series I've seen so far.
- 25:29Jon: Yeah.
- 25:30Yeah.
- 25:31And Fanm three is also the one that sort of establishes a Fanm rule for
- 25:35me, and that's don't get attached.
- 25:38Ryan: Yeah.
- 25:40Jon: The only character or actor you can get attached to is
- 25:44Reggie because everybody else.
- 25:46Could die or just vanish from quad or just like never be back.
- 25:52I don't wanna spoil too much, but Rocky's not back for four.
- 25:56Kearns: Okay.
- 25:57Jon: back for five.
- 25:58She's
- 25:59Kearns: Okay.
- 25:59Jon: four.
- 26:01Kearns: Okay.
- 26:01Jon: like it's, you just can't get attached to anybody in this series
- 26:05who's not Reggie the Tallman.
- 26:10Ryan: so what about Mike?
- 26:14Jon: I mean you but I mean, yeah, because he's not really there in two,
- 26:20Ryan: he's
- 26:21Jon: it's the character, but it's not Mike.
- 26:23It, I mean, James LaRose did, did a fine, a fine job into, but he is not Mike
- 26:30Michael Baldwin, that's that character.
- 26:33Yeah.
- 26:34Kearns: Not Mike.
- 26:36It's not Mike, Mike.
- 26:37Ryan: Mike,
- 26:38Jon: That could have been a fun touch though.
- 26:39That could have been a fun touch though if, um, Coscarelli had sort
- 26:43of written that of the parts of two with Mike as like dream and like
- 26:50that wasn't really you, was it?
- 26:52And like just establish it that way bring Mike back the real.
- 26:58Ryan: That would've been cool.
- 27:00I do.
- 27:01I.
- 27:04I while the tall man's changing him as to one of his underlings by the end of it.
- 27:08That was, again, going back to the effects that was pretty cool as he's like peeling
- 27:12his face back and he's got like the sphere underneath him, like the practical effects
- 27:17in this, like the, the gore level on it.
- 27:19It's pretty, it's tasty to put it like that.
- 27:22Like it's got like, it, it flows nicely.
- 27:25Um, know, just to go back real quick, 'cause you're talking
- 27:28about like whole mic and all that.
- 27:30Um.
- 27:30And the tall man, but the spheres.
- 27:33The spheres get a lot of action in this film.
- 27:35I feel like more action than they have in the last two.
- 27:39Kearns: Practical effects, I think made it easier to have a lot of sphere time.
- 27:42Jon: Yeah, they got better at doing sphere things so they
- 27:45could put more sphere stuff in.
- 27:47Kearns: Plus it's a good time.
- 27:48Like it's a good way to pad the runtime a little bit too.
- 27:50Spheres zipping around.
- 27:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:52Kearns: mean, the spheres, like you, you were saying in the first
- 27:55Phantasm two episodes ago that they were throwing them like a baseball.
- 28:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:00Kearns: and then in the second one, they definitely didn't just do that.
- 28:03That, and then you can tell there's a big jump in Phantasm three
- 28:06when you're watching the spheres.
- 28:08It's not like the Alien Spaceships and Independence Day bad, but it's
- 28:12definitely nineties, like special effects.
- 28:14Jon: Yeah, there's a period in of time where the advances in special effects
- 28:19were tremendous, but if you look back and watch them, they're so bad.
- 28:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 28:25Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:26Jon: fires in particular
- 28:29Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 28:29Jon: aged particularly well from like mid to late nineties to like 2, 5, 6 range,
- 28:37Kearns: Except for Conair.
- 28:39Jon: except for.
- 28:40Kearns: an immaculate film.
- 28:41Yeah.
- 28:41I'm glad we all agree.
- 28:43Ryan: Yeah, I.
- 28:43Jon: is immaculate.
- 28:44It's the exception to everything.
- 28:46Kearns: But like, um, independence Day was a good example of
- 28:48just the spaceship CGI stuff.
- 28:50'cause you could see the greenness, it's really bizarre behind them.
- 28:54But the, like the city explosion scenes and stuff are models, so
- 28:57that's okay because you're actually like getting that, that old school
- 29:02Godzilla sort of experience.
- 29:04Um, but like the rock.
- 29:06And stuff.
- 29:07I a hundred percent understand what John's saying.
- 29:09Although it's also a fantastic film when the explosions are happening and stuff.
- 29:14Like take a look at the Rock again guys, and you'll see what John's talking about.
- 29:19Ryan: Equal to James Bond, do you mean?
- 29:22Kearns: Oh, that's another good one.
- 29:24Pierce Psin.
- 29:25James Bond movies also probably don't hold up very well.
- 29:28Ryan: No,
- 29:30Jon: You definitely
- 29:30Kearns: No,
- 29:30Jon: some of that.
- 29:33Kearns: yeah.
- 29:33Ryan: find for us, not for the later generation.
- 29:37Kearns: I'm sure, I'm sure that's gonna be a problem for Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
- 29:41Um, they just won't be able.
- 29:43I watched the Princess Bride with my kids and the Goonies.
- 29:46The Goonies was tough.
- 29:47They're young, so maybe if they were a little older, but they, their
- 29:50attention, their ability to watch like Cory Hamme try to stutter out a
- 29:54couple extra lines and stuff like that.
- 29:56And it's not quick, quick, quick, quick, quick.
- 29:59It's a different animal.
- 30:01Jon: Has all changed already.
- 30:04Kearns: Yep.
- 30:04Well, everything's fast.
- 30:05Gotta be fast.
- 30:06Jon: It's, but it's sort of like when we were that age too and a little older
- 30:10and you know, your parents would put a black and white movie on and be like,
- 30:15Kearns: Yeah, it took me a while.
- 30:17Ryan: Yep.
- 30:17Jon: why is there not color?
- 30:18They're like, what?
- 30:18What are we watching here?
- 30:19Why are they talking so much and why did nothing blow up?
- 30:23And.
- 30:23Kearns: Yeah, it, it definitely took me a while to get to like
- 30:27appreciating that sort of art.
- 30:29Um, I took that into account when I wrote the books.
- 30:31By the way, the Valor, Val Howa series books is incredibly fast paced because
- 30:36I figured people Would be tough to rope in and keep roped in, but readers
- 30:41are a different animal, so I think they're still able to hold their
- 30:44attention down on a decent read anyway.
- 30:47Ryan: We're in that middle.
- 30:48Um, I feel when it comes with film nowadays, 'cause you got a film like
- 30:53Satu that comes out this past December and it goes over two hours and watching
- 30:58it, you wouldn't imagine the current generation 'cause everything is fast
- 31:03paced to hold their attention, It held some of the attention, but I
- 31:08feel like it's the cinematography too.
- 31:10But
- 31:11Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:12Ryan: again, on that thin line of everything is either too
- 31:14fast or too long and it's like the, it's gotta find its niche.
- 31:20Like you go back to the eighties and most, I'd say just mostly the eighties.
- 31:24You had a good niche of a good time run of movies where it just hit the right
- 31:29spot where a good action film can be.
- 31:3285, 90 minutes.
- 31:33Same thing with horror.
- 31:35Hit all the spots and it'll work.
- 31:37And it's same thing for a drama.
- 31:39It could be two hours, over two hours.
- 31:41It doesn't need to be three hours and it'll hit the spot.
- 31:44But
- 31:45Kearns: of, by the way, um, it's already lost a few Oscars, but
- 31:49it's still in contention for cinematography and costume design.
- 31:54Ryan: I,
- 31:54Kearns: So I've been keeping an eye on it.
- 31:57Ryan: I'd go with that.
- 31:58I, I would go with them.
- 31:59Winning on that cinematography would be cool.
- 32:01Costume design, uh, just for the stash.
- 32:04Kearns: I'm still pissed about, um, leading actress de not
- 32:08being up for leading actress.
- 32:09There's only five people.
- 32:10It's a freaking sham, but yeah, actress in a leading role is definitely
- 32:14going to be either Carla Sophia Goone or Cynthia Vo and Wicked.
- 32:19It's Emelia Perez v. Wicked on that.
- 32:21I'll be shocked if anybody else wins it.
- 32:23But
- 32:25Ryan: Yeah, I was
- 32:26Kearns: you're rooting for to me more.
- 32:27Ryan: Yep.
- 32:28Kearns: I don't know if she's got a shot.
- 32:29The substance.
- 32:30She could, I mean, it's, to me she's due, like you said.
- 32:37Yeah, and it's a weak pool.
- 32:39You're right about that.
- 32:40This is a really weak year, so it's a good year for them to give her
- 32:43the nod just to give it to her.
- 32:45Ryan: Won't
- 32:45Jon: mean, I don't want to go too far.
- 32:47No, I don't wanna go too far from Fanm with this, but I mean, this is
- 32:51possibly the least interesting field of best picture nominees in a long time.
- 32:57Ryan: Yeah.
- 32:58Kearns: It, I tapped out.
- 32:59Um, it's streaming a, b, C on Hulu and I was trying to get it pulled up.
- 33:03And Hulu is, being in Hulu is one of the worst apps in the history of apps,
- 33:08so it's just being a pain in the butt.
- 33:10It won't let me log in.
- 33:11I have to go into here.
- 33:12I have to change my home location, whatever.
- 33:14I was like, oh, well, I don't actually care.
- 33:16I kind of wanted to see Conan say something funny here or there.
- 33:19I was like, I'll just catch the YouTube recap tomorrow, or something like that.
- 33:22This is gonna suck anyway.
- 33:24Ryan: People.
- 33:25People are talking about John Cena turning heel at elimination chamber more than what
- 33:29they're talking about the Oscars tonight.
- 33:30All right.
- 33:33Jon: I mean it's true.
- 33:35Well, but that, that's sort of the Oscars failing at this point anyway.
- 33:39They expanded the field of best picture nominees, what, five,
- 33:43six years ago, so they could try to include more blockbusters
- 33:47in it, and they still are like.
- 33:50Listen, some of these movies could be great.
- 33:53I've heard the brutalist is fantastic.
- 33:55It's three and a half hours, so I'll probably never see it and nobody else
- 33:59will either, largely for that reason, it's a three and a half hour movie.
- 34:03Kearns: Yeah, I think the last one of those I watched Marathon films
- 34:07was The Irishman, and it was worthy, but it was in my living room.
- 34:10I'm not gonna go to a theater and see a three and a half hour long movie.
- 34:13I hate people.
- 34:16I hear people breathe for three and a half hour.
- 34:19Jon: The, the same with conclave, like conclave I've heard is great.
- 34:23Uh, do I want to sit for however long that movie is and watch how they pick the pope?
- 34:29Probably
- 34:29Kearns: No.
- 34:30No.
- 34:30'cause we know it's the same way that everybody does everything anyway.
- 34:33Jon: okay
- 34:34Kearns: a freaking, it's a politically driven nightmare.
- 34:37Well, I don't want to get crazy into it.
- 34:38I'm gonna piss off the Christians.
- 34:40Ryan: I.
- 34:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:42Ryan: I thought they were using straws.
- 34:44Shortest straw.
- 34:45You win.
- 34:46Kearns: I am gonna be seeing a conclave soon anyway.
- 34:49But
- 34:50Jon: No.
- 34:51Kearns: Sorry, Papa.
- 34:52Jon: Too soon?
- 34:54Kearns: No.
- 34:54Is he dead yet?
- 34:56Jon: No.
- 34:56Kearns: Did he?
- 34:57Tim Curry.
- 34:57Okay.
- 34:58Ryan: No,
- 34:58Kearns: No, I don't think so either.
- 35:00Ryan: no.
- 35:00Kearns: How's, um, speaking of people in ailing health though, and all
- 35:03kidding aside, how is Reggie holding up?
- 35:05I know he entered hospice Home Hospice.
- 35:08Do we have any word.
- 35:09Jon: So Don Costelli posted this week that he had gone to visit
- 35:13him and he posted a picture.
- 35:15He looks okay, I guess he, I guess he was with it enough that they read a
- 35:20bunch of the letters together and think it was, he said it was a, you know,
- 35:24a good experience though, you know.
- 35:27Ryan: That's good though.
- 35:28Like a good experience is better than a bad experience,
- 35:31Kearns: That's sad.
- 35:32Happy I'm, I'm sad.
- 35:34Happy for, for that experience.
- 35:37That sucks, man.
- 35:38That sucks.
- 35:39The end of life stuff's brutal.
- 35:40Not you, Reggie.
- 35:42Do you think he's still like lusting in his home?
- 35:44Hospice do like the, the,
- 35:47Jon: Absolutely.
- 35:48Kearns: yeah.
- 35:48The CNA comes over and he's like, eh boy.
- 35:56He's, he's lived so long.
- 35:57He is become his own villain.
- 36:02Ryan: Lemme play you a limerick.
- 36:04Kearns: so what other fun loving stuff about Phantasm three do
- 36:07you guys have to throw out there before we get into your top fives?
- 36:10Ryan: 1996 La Timesed was on the top of a hundred.
- 36:14Sell, uh, highest selling direct to videos, which is pretty cool at that time.
- 36:18It, it's a high selling, uh, three.
- 36:21Cool.
- 36:21For any film,
- 36:22Kearns: Oh.
- 36:23Ryan: which is crazy because like Fanm, it's in that B-movie range,
- 36:28you know the first one like 1979, and then you get rental stores.
- 36:33It's hard to come up, buy it, come buy it.
- 36:35The second one gets a little more of a push.
- 36:37You can get access to it, so you get familiar with the story.
- 36:40And then the third one is just like grew in popularity.
- 36:44I mean, at the time, I mean, what, what have running
- 36:46against Leprechaun, stilt skin.
- 36:52Kearns: It's a different animal than those.
- 36:53Plus you're a peak tower, Sam Goody, um, your Borders bookstores are popping up.
- 36:59Like you, you can get your hands on these things, um, in
- 37:02a lot of different locations.
- 37:03So I could see that definitely boosting sales quite a bit.
- 37:07Jon: Affordable VHS has become affordable by this point.
- 37:11So
- 37:15until you couldn't own v Hs, unless you were extremely wealthy,
- 37:20they were hundred dollars tapes.
- 37:22Kearns: Yeah, I remember Jurassic Park was 50 bucks when it launched.
- 37:26Do you remember that?
- 37:27Yeah.
- 37:2750 bucks for a VHS of Jurassic Park.
- 37:30Ryan: I
- 37:31Kearns: I.
- 37:31Ryan: like the highest paying was like 20 bucks maybe.
- 37:35I mean,
- 37:35Kearns: Usually it was 1999.
- 37:37Yeah,
- 37:37Ryan: yeah, like Suncoast, like Titanic maybe was like 35 bucks.
- 37:41That was the most expensive tape I ever saw, but 50 bucks for Jurassic Park.
- 37:46That is crazy.
- 37:47Kearns: you're talking like day of launch too.
- 37:50It, uh, it was a, it was rough.
- 37:53I remember looking at it as a child, I was like, this is wrong.
- 37:57Ryan: Why can I see you in a sea of people fighting?
- 37:59Trying to grab the tape.
- 38:00It's mine
- 38:02Kearns: No, it did not go down that way.
- 38:04I want 50 bucks.
- 38:05That will never be mine.
- 38:06Jon: Nope.
- 38:07Kearns: Now it's in like a Walmart bargain bin
- 38:10Jon: Yeah,
- 38:10Kearns: 39 cents.
- 38:11Jon: so you go to like Blockbuster and you come home and you'd have
- 38:14the the two VCR set, so you could.
- 38:17Ryan: record.
- 38:18Jon: From one tape to the.
- 38:20Kearns: That brings back memories.
- 38:22Ryan: Oh God.
- 38:25Kearns: All right, so
- 38:27Ryan: I was just thinking about just.
- 38:30These kids will never know these kids these days of recording and trying to
- 38:35stop the recording during a commercial.
- 38:36So you can have like a perfect movie and then you miss
- 38:39Kearns: yeah,
- 38:40Ryan: because you had to like get snacks or something.
- 38:43You're like, shit, all right,
- 38:45Kearns: recording.
- 38:46Ryan: that scene.
- 38:53Nope.
- 38:55Jon: they won.
- 38:55Know any of that?
- 38:58Kearns: Track you
- 38:59Jon: Yeah.
- 39:00Kearns: on a.
- 39:02Jon: Sitting start the right, he wouldn't come on at the end
- 39:08and talk through the outro like.
- 39:11Kearns: Like, God damn it.
- 39:13Yep.
- 39:13I remember those days Well, but all right.
- 39:17Phantasm three, not the only nineties Phantasm, but the only nineties
- 39:20Phantasm we're talking about tonight.
- 39:21You bastards.
- 39:23So we're going to roll into top fives, I believe.
- 39:28Ryan: Yeah.
- 39:29And uh, you know, I feel like we were talking about pH three and I wanna
- 39:34go with three qls, the third move
- 39:36Kearns: Okay.
- 39:36Ryan: the third move in the third movie uh, certain franchises that I love.
- 39:42I highly recommend and.
- 39:45There's like a familiar one on there, but I think the first one's
- 39:48definitely gonna be one of those where you're gonna be shocked.
- 39:51And I'm gonna start it off with Puppet Master three, Revenge.
- 39:56Um, love that movie.
- 39:58It is,
- 39:59Jon: You love Puppet.
- 40:01Kearns: Yeah, he's a big fan of.
- 40:02Ryan: Master.
- 40:04since I was a kid, that movie like Chucky, I wasn't afraid
- 40:08of those little marina dolls.
- 40:10Screw that man.
- 40:11But I've gotta fond love.
- 40:13It's.
- 40:14continuity, it doesn't make sense because, uh, uh, the puppet master, he dies in
- 40:211939 and this film takes place in 1941.
- 40:25So there's continuity errors, but it introduces Leach woman as well as one
- 40:29of my favorite puppets, six shooter.
- 40:32the one with
- 40:33Kearns: I remember six.
- 40:34Ryan: the west he has the laugh.
- 40:36He looks like snidely whiplash.
- 40:37It's great.
- 40:38Um.
- 40:40I just love that film and it just, it sets off what in, I guess, a new time
- 40:45era, but that that whole era is all messed up and if, if we ever cover puppet
- 40:49master, that'll be definitely a discussion of how it goes all over the world.
- 40:54Kearns: How can we not, Ryan, how can we not when you love it so dearly?
- 41:02Probably we're gonna have to break them up.
- 41:05We'll have to do them like three per season.
- 41:11For real.
- 41:11Ryan: We need three in there.
- 41:13And puppet master versus demonic toys.
- 41:15Those are the biggest
- 41:16Kearns: yeah, that's a big one.
- 41:17That is a big one.
- 41:18But, um, all right.
- 41:20What's your fourth movie?
- 41:22Ryan: Fourth one hell raiser three hell on earth.
- 41:26Um, the Americanized hell raiser.
- 41:28Yeah, they, they Americanize it.
- 41:30There's a little connection to the second one because he's stuck
- 41:33in that stone, um, art craft.
- 41:36He's in the middle of the club.
- 41:38It, as it ends in the second one and transfers to the third one and
- 41:41all hell breaks loose, literally.
- 41:43But that's got some of my favorite eno bytes, especially the one
- 41:46with the, uh, the video recording.
- 41:49The guy who can shoot like the discs out of his mouth and
- 41:52the bartender who shoots fire.
- 41:54It's pretty cool stuff.
- 41:56And again, they made it more slasher, but what makes it fun.
- 42:00Uh, number two, or I'm sorry, number three.
- 42:03Uh, Friday 13th, part three.
- 42:06it's.
- 42:07I love part six, but part three, it just, you get the introduction
- 42:10of the mask, the cabin.
- 42:13Um, one of my favorite dead scenes is the one course 'cause it's in 3D.
- 42:18He shoots the arrow into the girl's eye, the spear gun.
- 42:22Um, just a fun movie and how it ends.
- 42:26It shows that he's indestructible and he's human.
- 42:30is when Jason was human, ladies and gentlemen.
- 42:32I'm just saying 'cause he was human part six.
- 42:36Uh, number
- 42:37Jon: Did you get,
- 42:39Ryan: Oh,
- 42:39Jon: don't wanna interrupt you, but did you get to see it?
- 42:43Ryan: No, I have not, I want to, it is on my like, bucket list.
- 42:49'cause I, I, it's 'cause it, they make it so much like with the broom
- 42:53coming in to like the camera and stuff.
- 42:56It's like, like I feel like with the older DVD.
- 42:59It's still implemented in like a 2D version, but that's definitely
- 43:04gotta be on the bucket list for that is on the bucket list.
- 43:07But imagine we can do a 3D movie, watch it.
- 43:11That'd be awesome.
- 43:13two.
- 43:13Halloween.
- 43:15Halloween, three season of the witch.
- 43:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 43:19Ryan: it's yeah, it's taken a long time for me to love it 'cause I love
- 43:23Kearns: Three more days to Halloween.
- 43:25Halloween.
- 43:25Halloween.
- 43:26Three more days to Halloween.
- 43:28Silver Shamrock.
- 43:30Yeah, I remember it well.
- 43:32I hated that movie as a kid.
- 43:34It was like such a lie to me.
- 43:35No, Michael Myers made me furious.
- 43:41I didn't see the advertisements.
- 43:42I was, I was, but a wheel lad.
- 43:45Halloween three was coming on.
- 43:46Oh boy.
- 43:49Ryan: Well, a MC would show Michael on the top of the steps, like
- 43:52in the movie, and they're like, get ready for Halloween three.
- 43:55You're like, oh, this is cool.
- 43:56And then it's just a
- 43:58Kearns: Yeah,
- 44:00Ryan: But
- 44:00Kearns: it's a.
- 44:02Ryan: yeah, as I say, you start loving as you get older.
- 44:04Tom Atkins from my bloody Valentine fame, um,
- 44:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:09Ryan: he's in it.
- 44:10It's, it's a good fill as it's, you gotta get used to it.
- 44:14I would say the whole fact that it's just a standalone.
- 44:17Not part
- 44:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:18Ryan: series I, it's a different vibe.
- 44:21And then, um,
- 44:22Kearns: You have to get used to the fact that it has nothing to do with
- 44:24the Halloween universe whatsoever.
- 44:27Ryan: no.
- 44:27Kearns: And they just, that's like, um, like Cloverfield esque.
- 44:30Like it, it's this Cloverfield lane.
- 44:33You bastards.
- 44:34We know what you're doing.
- 44:36Halloween three, we're gonna make a lot of money off of this movie that
- 44:39has nothing to do with Halloween.
- 44:42Ryan: What do you call it?
- 44:43It was, um, oh, who directed it?
- 44:45The guy who directed, uh, um, oh, child's
- 44:50Kearns: it John Carpenter?
- 44:51It wasn't John Carpenter, was it?
- 44:55I don't know.
- 44:56Who did a child's play?
- 44:57Let's see,
- 44:57Jon: Lee Wallace.
- 44:59Ryan: Yes,
- 44:59Kearns: we're gonna find out.
- 45:01Ryan: Tommy Lee Wallace, uh, directed it
- 45:03Kearns: Got it.
- 45:04Directed by Tom Holland.
- 45:06Jon: Oh, Tom
- 45:08Ryan: Holland.
- 45:08I'm sorry.
- 45:09Kearns: Tom Holland.
- 45:10Uh, did child play.
- 45:12The original 88.
- 45:13Ryan: did child play.
- 45:14Yeah.
- 45:15Let's say Tommy Lee Wallace did, uh, Halloween three and such
- 45:18a underrated horror director.
- 45:20Um, then to go to number one, it was produced and written by a
- 45:26legend and West Craven nightmare on Elm Street, three Dream Warriors.
- 45:30It's, it's my favorite.
- 45:33Third film.
- 45:34Um, just so many good lines.
- 45:37Uh, so many great deaths.
- 45:39That's the one where, you know, welcome to Primetime Bitch.
- 45:42He's got the kid with the Mario Knot and he's got him over and he cuts
- 45:46the wires and he falls to his death.
- 45:48Um, mean, it's fucked up, but he gets the girl high and he's like, that's a rush.
- 45:54The debts in there are just awesome and it's just, it's
- 45:57such a good nightmare film.
- 45:58And it goes full circle 'cause it was supposed to be the last one.
- 46:02At that time until he comes back.
- 46:05But there's so many good ones.
- 46:08But that's my type top five for the three qls honorary mention to Army of Darkness.
- 46:13I didn't make the list because I was kind of going with a different vibe
- 46:17on it, and I considered that more fantasy comedy than the horror and the
- 46:22second and first one, in my opinion.
- 46:25Yeah.
- 46:27Jon: Know, army of darkness doesn't
- 46:33Kearns: Yeah, it does.
- 46:35Ryan: yeah,
- 46:36Kearns: I agree.
- 46:37I agree with you because Evil Dead one and two are really kind of one movie.
- 46:41Um, I'll say it.
- 46:42Ryan: yeah.
- 46:48Kearns: Ah, update, Let's see.
- 46:52Um, Zoe Zel.
- 46:53Donna won for Best actress, by the way,
- 46:57Ryan: I am with
- 46:57Kearns: Amelia Perez.
- 46:59Um, production design was wicked and I knew it.
- 47:02I knew it.
- 47:03I knew it.
- 47:03And, um, costume design went to the substance.
- 47:07Ryan: You know what, I'm fine with that 'cause it's a film.
- 47:09Kearns: I mean, that's true.
- 47:10I guess that's true.
- 47:13Our flagship episodes, we still Nope, that's it.
- 47:17That's the only chances we had.
- 47:18Nevermind.
- 47:19There's no hope.
- 47:21Oh, no.
- 47:21Cinematography still.
- 47:22I'm sorry.
- 47:22Cinematography still out there.
- 47:25All right.
- 47:25Ryan: I wanna hear what you
- 47:26Kearns: Let's,
- 47:27Ryan: with this week.
- 47:29Kearns: yeah, John.
- 47:30Jon: I came up with five more badass kids in horror movies,
- 47:35Ryan: Okay.
- 47:36Fair.
- 47:37Jon: so my number five.
- 47:39It is probably the youngest movie I'll, I'll ever talk about on here.
- 47:44Monster Squad
- 47:46Kearns: Okay.
- 47:48Jon: 1987
- 47:49Kearns: Yeah, I love that movie.
- 47:51Jon: group of kids have to defend their hometown from an invasion
- 47:55of the classic universal monsters, and the wolf man has an arts.
- 48:00Ryan: Yes, he
- 48:01Kearns: He has nars.
- 48:02Ryan: Just kick
- 48:02Kearns: Yeah, that movie's.
- 48:03That movie's just a great movie.
- 48:07Jon: The perfect intro to horror.
- 48:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:10Jon: so my number four is a German movie called Cub.
- 48:15So Kid Sam heads out in the woods with fully expecting to find a monster, and
- 48:22Kearns: he,
- 48:23Jon: does he.
- 48:24Ryan: What's it, Alec Baldwin?
- 48:26Kearns: uh, actually, no.
- 48:27It was Billy Baldwin.
- 48:28Weird,
- 48:31Jon: Steven
- 48:31Kearns: weird coincidence.
- 48:36Jon: the Cubby Cub is a pretty messed up movie.
- 48:41It's pretty good, pretty good.
- 48:43Kearns: Nice.
- 48:44Jon: my number three, I'll go to West Craven.
- 48:46Also the people under the stairs.
- 48:49Kearns: Ah, that movie messed me up.
- 48:51Ryan: That's a
- 48:52Kearns: movie messed me up.
- 48:53I lived like in that house when I watched that movie, creaky Ass Stairs.
- 48:57Weird.
- 48:58Like there was very plausible.
- 48:59There were people living in my walls
- 49:01Jon: Yep.
- 49:01Kearns: in my mind.
- 49:02Yeah.
- 49:03Jon: yep.
- 49:03So
- 49:03Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:04Jon: into his family's landlord's house and uncovers their
- 49:09horrible secrets in the walls.
- 49:14My number two is probably the most hit or miss movie for people that I,
- 49:20I've probably recommended in years.
- 49:23It's about, it runs about 50 50, so my number two psycho goreman.
- 49:30Kearns: Psycho Gore, man.
- 49:31Jon: Yep.
- 49:33Kearns: Not Gore mom.
- 49:34Jon: nope.
- 49:35Gorman man.
- 49:36Ryan: I need to hear a synopsis for this.
- 49:38I'm, I'm intrigued
- 49:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:40Ryan: one.
- 49:42Jon: Siblings discover a gem that controls the archduke of nightmare,
- 49:46a violent intergalactic being.
- 49:49Kearns: Nice,
- 49:50Jon: of course, one, once you're a kid and you have control of
- 49:53something like that, you know it's doing what you want it to do.
- 49:56Kearns: sweet.
- 49:57Jon: And it seems like, so it goman who love it, like or can tolerate the.
- 50:08The young girl, people who don't like it find her to be super annoying.
- 50:13I think she's awesome.
- 50:14Like she's just such a
- 50:16Kearns: Okay,
- 50:17Jon: pain in the ass little kid.
- 50:19It's awesome.
- 50:21Kearns: cool.
- 50:23Jon: And my,
- 50:23Ryan: year,
- 50:24Kearns: Psycho Goreman.
- 50:25You don't even have to write it down.
- 50:27Ryan: No,
- 50:27Kearns: forget that one.
- 50:28Jon: and my number one maybe on our list.
- 50:34It's a French movie called Deadly Games.
- 50:37Kearns: Okay.
- 50:39Jon: Deadly Games is home alone meets diehard.
- 50:43Kearns: Yes.
- 50:45Ryan: It is a Christmas
- 50:46Jon: So, uh, a boy is, has to defend his home and his grandfather from
- 50:52a deranged former department store Santa seeking revenge for his firing.
- 50:57Kearns: It's, it's home alone.
- 50:59Meets Die hard, meets Bad Santa.
- 51:01Actually,
- 51:02Jon: that too.
- 51:02Yeah.
- 51:03Yeah.
- 51:05Kearns: let's go.
- 51:06Jon: and it predates
- 51:10Kearns: All
- 51:10Jon: bad Santa.
- 51:11It's 89.
- 51:12It
- 51:13Kearns: predate.
- 51:13Jon: Die hard, but not die hard.
- 51:15So die hard
- 51:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 51:17Jon: at the
- 51:17Kearns: Wait,
- 51:18Jon: just a, a die hard rip off for the kid.
- 51:21Ryan: That's
- 51:21Kearns: I know.
- 51:21I thought home alone.
- 51:22One was the nineties.
- 51:23Yeah, 1990 was home alone.
- 51:26Ryan: One year prior.
- 51:27Kearns: Diehard was 88.
- 51:28You are correct, sir. John mc Tiernan.
- 51:31All right.
- 51:32Well,
- 51:32Jon: a book
- 51:34Kearns: God, books are stupid.
- 51:38Ryan: don't say.
- 51:40Jon: one
- 51:40Kearns: I will never say that
- 51:41Jon: one other
- 51:42Kearns: real.
- 51:44Jon: the original John in a movie played by Frank Sinatra.
- 51:50Kearns: No way.
- 51:52Jon: He wasn't called.
- 51:53He wasn't John but it's the same character.
- 51:57Ryan: was called
- 51:57Kearns: That's pretty sweet.
- 52:00Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 52:01Kearns: Cool.
- 52:01All right, we'll have to watch that.
- 52:03Ryan: It's, it's
- 52:04Kearns: Then we can watch, um, east the Hawk one.
- 52:06There's another one where he plays some singing, some singing guy.
- 52:09It's a Bruce, a very little known Bruce Willis movie.
- 52:12Um, Hudson Hawk.
- 52:14Yeah, that's another one I really enjoy,
- 52:17Ryan: I got a
- 52:17Kearns: but I.
- 52:18Ryan: uh, real quick for viewers and you guys if you
- 52:20haven't seen it on Amazon Prime.
- 52:22Um, if you guys are fans of Alex Cross the show, Alex Cross on Amazon Prime.
- 52:28It's the first season.
- 52:29Got green lit for a second.
- 52:30It is excellent, um, especially if you love Kiss the Girls Long Game,
- 52:34the Spider, it's that same character.
- 52:37Um, just ignore the Tyler Perry version.
- 52:40Doesn't do it justice.
- 52:44Kearns: Okay.
- 52:46Ryan: Yes.
- 52:47A hundred
- 52:47Jon: Loveman.
- 52:50Ryan: No.
- 52:50No, but he does a,
- 52:53Kearns: all good.
- 52:53Ryan: job in the films for what we had at the time.
- 52:57I'd say,
- 52:58Jon: Yeah.
- 53:01Ryan: no, this, this guy is awesome.
- 53:03He kicks ass, out his
- 53:06Kearns: Cool man.
- 53:06Ryan: ass.
- 53:07Kearns: You snuck in a couple wrecks there at the end of the top five.
- 53:10Nicely done, sir. But um, all right guys, we're gonna wrap up tonight 'cause
- 53:14it's Sunday night where no one usually record on Sunday nights, and I'm a
- 53:17tired old man and I need to go to bed.
- 53:20For real.
- 53:21You can see us swallowing, yawns the whole episode.
- 53:23So can't hide behind the animation on this one, fellas.
- 53:28But all right, everybody.
- 53:29That was Phantasm three.
- 53:31Um, we're gonna tune in next week for Phantasm four
- 53:36Ryan: Oblivion.
- 53:38Kearns: Oblivion later.
- 53:41Ryan: See ya.
