- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It. All starts right now.
- 0:16Welcome back to the three O take presented by Sea Cake.
- 0:18This is episode 487. I'll be your host Kyle Korne.
- 0:21I'm here with my Co host Nate Reyes.
- 0:23Nate. Well, we did it.
- 0:28We we made it to the lull. It's like about a week.
- 0:34I was wondering how long it would take and.
- 0:38We're here. I mean, we get to talk Rokie
- 0:43Sasaki. I mean, that's, that's not AI
- 0:45mean that's, that's a little bit of a headliner.
- 0:47No, come on now. Hadn't heard of him since last
- 0:50week, so yeah. Well, that's a that's a you
- 0:53problem then, because he's, I mean, some folks, myself
- 0:59included, have have been a little more familiar.
- 1:01With him than just staying him. For a while he was in the World
- 1:04Baseball Classic, the very one that you and I were.
- 1:07I mean, not not location wise, but we attended the 2023 World
- 1:12Baseball Classic, which he wasn't.
- 1:15You remembered him. No, because we didn't go to
- 1:18watch him. I'm just letting you know he was
- 1:20there. He was on the team that won the
- 1:24whole thing. Name another guy.
- 1:28Shohei Otani. Nope, no Otani, no Yamamoto.
- 1:32Name another guy. Masataka, Yoshita.
- 1:35Another one I don't know. The entire like, that's 40 man
- 1:41roster for the Japan organization.
- 1:44Come on. Now, and it's not currently in
- 1:46the league, yeah. It was last year.
- 1:51First name by the way. Roki, I saw that.
- 1:58Thing, that thing above the O, yeah, I don't know.
- 2:04Let's get that line. What is that?
- 2:06Couldn't tell you, I barely know the English language.
- 2:08You expect me to know what these accents are?
- 2:11So like the Japanese version of a of a tilde?
- 2:16What? What would the effect be on the
- 2:17letter? What other possible
- 2:21pronunciations could we be talking here?
- 2:23What if it was? Rookie.
- 2:24What if it was a long O? That'd be cool.
- 2:29Rukie Sasaka. Sasaki, Rukie Sasaka.
- 2:33Not Sasaki. Not so confused with Roku TV.
- 2:41No, I think it's Rokie. I think we're in the clear
- 2:44there. You want to talk about them or
- 2:49you have anything you'd like to open up with?
- 2:53No, it's Taco night tonight, so that's good.
- 2:59Pretty full. That's that's a great opener.
- 3:02Let's talk. Let's talk Roki or, or Rookie,
- 3:06whatever your choice of pronunciation is.
- 3:10Well, that's a shame that you've you've only known about Roki for
- 3:14a week. Oh yeah.
- 3:16Because he's he's got some, he's got some excitement that he's
- 3:21bringing with him to Major League Baseball.
- 3:22He's only 23. You just want me to give you
- 3:25sort of the profile here? Hit me with it.
- 3:27All right, Roki Sasaki. It's going to take everything in
- 3:32me to stick with Sasaki and not Sasaka.
- 3:38Masataka Yoshida. There's a lot of A's.
- 3:42There is. Just have have a little bit of
- 3:45patience with me if I slip up and say.
- 3:47Like the first name, definitely like the first and last name.
- 3:51There's some, there's some synonyms there.
- 3:55There's some syllables that match.
- 3:59You sure you're not looking for vowels?
- 4:01Oh, you're. I see what you're saying.
- 4:03Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, between Joe say oh Tani,
- 4:08you Darvish doesn't, so that's nice you he makes it easy.
- 4:12You makes it very easy, but he's 23 years old routinely can can
- 4:20hang in in triple digits will be eligible to be acquired by all
- 4:2730 teams and it's likely to sign.
- 4:35Well, he's he's going to be required to sign a minor league
- 4:37deal, but his initial deal is going to be in the very low
- 4:44possible, most likely single digit millions here as opposed
- 4:49to if he would have waited until he's about 25, where he then
- 4:54could have been open up to a Yamamoto esque deal.
- 5:02He just wanted to get over here a lot sooner.
- 5:03He request he actually requested to be posted before last year,
- 5:09to which the team said Nope, we're we're good with you right
- 5:12here for at least another year. The Marines, yes.
- 5:16The I can never pronounce this team name.
- 5:23Let's try it out. The the lot, the Chiba Chiba
- 5:29lot, Chiba lotti, Chiba lotti. Chiba Latte.
- 5:35Chiba latte the chiba latte marines, the Chai latte Marines
- 5:40I'm. Going to go.
- 5:41There it is. That's it.
- 5:43That's the one they they posted them and well, no, I pumped the
- 5:50brakes. The posting has not been made
- 5:53official yet. They're either, they're either
- 5:55going to post in prior to the, I want to say December 15th window
- 6:00or after. And then that'll determine which
- 6:05which like international class will be a part of.
- 6:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's like every team has
- 6:11international like pool money that they can use for signing,
- 6:15correct. And if he goes before December
- 6:1815th, teams will have to use their 2024 pool.
- 6:24He signs after that. Technically they can, which most
- 6:26of it's a 2025 pool. Most of that has been used up by
- 6:29right across teams because. Which it'd be, it'd be smart if
- 6:33you waited. It'd be smart if you waited
- 6:34because I think it also goes from like instead of like 3 or 5
- 6:39million, it can bump up to like 7, seven and a half million,
- 6:43something like that. So he's able to get a little bit
- 6:46more money. I would say he probably has more
- 6:48teams that would be interested because you know, they haven't
- 6:52touched that budget of next year yet.
- 6:55I think it makes sense to wait, but I like it.
- 6:59This was similar to Shohei did did something similar too.
- 7:03He went to the What'd he go for? Like it?
- 7:05Was like 2 million. It was like 2.52 point 4 or
- 7:08something like that. Yeah, it was really cheap so.
- 7:12What a steal, I know. Yeah, similar path, like I said,
- 7:18contrary to what Yamamoto did, given that Yamamoto was already
- 7:22of age to to become eligible for a deal like that.
- 7:26But like you said, Otani came over in a similar fashion, came
- 7:30over before that that point and received a much, much lower
- 7:36contract as a result. But I don't think he's worried
- 7:39about that now. But you mentioned teams.
- 7:43I know it's still early. He hasn't even officially been
- 7:45posted at at at this moment in time.
- 7:49But that's what everybody's talking about right now.
- 7:51Team wise. Sounds like the Dodgers are a
- 7:56leader in the clubhouse. But then again, who aren't the
- 7:59Dodgers the leader in the clubhouse for at this point?
- 8:04It's unbelievable if they have you seen that, that those Tik
- 8:12Toks where it's got like Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad, he's
- 8:15like, he can't keep getting away with this.
- 8:18That's literally Dodgers. I I saw, I saw, I saw a comment
- 8:22today that said if, if the Dodgers get Sasaki and Soto,
- 8:28they said not watching baseball ever again.
- 8:30Yeah, I mean. And to be quite honest with you,
- 8:32if it gets to that point, I mean, if they get one or the
- 8:35other, that's got to be like the final straw or like the like the
- 8:40last point before you stop watching baseball.
- 8:42But if they get both, it's like, what?
- 8:44Why even? Why even turn the TV on?
- 8:46Why even why even watch the games at that point?
- 8:49Because it gets to a point where just because you have the best
- 8:52players, because you have the most money, doesn't necessarily
- 8:55mean you're always going to win. But that there has to be a line
- 8:57drawn where it's like, if you have the best players and the
- 9:01most money and then you go out and add two more of the best
- 9:05players, then it's like. After winning the World Series,
- 9:08right? What are we really doing here?
- 9:10Yeah, all. I don't know that would be
- 9:12Dodgers fans. I don't know though, I I'm not
- 9:15going to be so quick to to say that he's going to be a Dodger.
- 9:19I think that's the beauty of him coming over so early in, in his
- 9:24deal because normally like you were saying, it's it's either 25
- 9:28years old or six years, yeah, of service over there to where it
- 9:35changes things. So he's him coming out early, I
- 9:38think really like in an almost selfless way opens up a lot of
- 9:43doors for a lot of teams. And you could, I mean, you could
- 9:49throw a dart at the map and probably hit a few teams that
- 9:55weren't in the Yamamoto conversation, but potentially
- 10:00are in this in this conversation because of that budget is a
- 10:06little bigger than Yamamoto. I saw he's like 62190.
- 10:12Yeah. I mean he I don't remember
- 10:13Yamamoto size but I know he's not 62.
- 10:16Yeah, he's got a solid build and I was watching I was watching
- 10:19clips of his stuff and like the the life is there for sure.
- 10:27I mean the he was hitting he was hitting one O 2.
- 10:31I mean, I'm sure he's he's like I said, he he sits in triple
- 10:33digits when he wants to. You can dial it up certainly,
- 10:37but like he was hitting one O 2 in the world Baseball Classic,
- 10:40some of the the at bats against him that I was watching.
- 10:45So I mean, I don't know if if you were a Major League team, I
- 10:51don't know why you would have no reason not to be under this guy.
- 10:55Yeah. And it and it makes it makes a
- 10:58fun conversation for some of those teams that were maybe in
- 11:02the hunt that could have just used a little bit more in this
- 11:08post season. When you take out the
- 11:10powerhouses, you can look at like a Detroit Tigers, you know,
- 11:15you can look at the heck, even at Kansas City Royals.
- 11:20If I'm from Japan, I don't know if I'm going to want to go to
- 11:22Missouri, But you know, hey, they each is their own.
- 11:25But I think there's a lot of conversations that could open
- 11:31up. You know, when you look at like
- 11:33free agent lists, you see some teams that you know, like the
- 11:38Nationals are, are buyers in a lot of these predictions.
- 11:44You got to assume maybe the the Mets are in cover.
- 11:49You know, it's Yamamoto and Otani, maybe Sanga and Sasaki.
- 11:53Maybe that works a little bit. So there's some there's some
- 11:59teams out there that I as fun and as easy it is as it is, if
- 12:04you're Dodgers fans, just say like, you know, hey, come join
- 12:06the force. You know, there's, there's a lot
- 12:10of other opportunities out there and, and.
- 12:14Similar to the conversation we had surrounding Soto about
- 12:18wanting to be on a team where you can, you talked pretty
- 12:23heavily about it last episode, but wanting to be on a team
- 12:25where you can essentially call it your team, even if you're
- 12:28surrounded by other stars who are maybe a Tier 2 below you,
- 12:35without a doubt your team is that's going to be something
- 12:38that motivates Juan Soto in his, in his free agency.
- 12:43That same to me at least, and I think some other folks out there
- 12:48asking the same question is, is this going to be a a concern of,
- 12:52of his? Yeah.
- 12:54Like are you are you are are we just going to assume that he's
- 12:57going to end up in LA just because of the like the Otani
- 13:00Baz and and the potential to win year in and year out?
- 13:06Or are you going to want to go to maybe a place where it's
- 13:08like, I'm 23, yeah, I have pretty much my whole career
- 13:14ahead of me, Maybe I want to go elsewhere where that can be my
- 13:19team. I I just don't know what sort of
- 13:21impact that plays from the Japanese perspective.
- 13:24It's true, but I mean you you got to you got to assume the
- 13:27Mariners are in the conversation, right.
- 13:31If he grew up in Ichiro fan, which I'm sure majority of them
- 13:36have, you know, it's it's you have monumental, you know,
- 13:41figures that you got to grow up idolizing.
- 13:43And you know, you could look at the Yankees for a Matsui
- 13:47connection. Like there's some things that
- 13:50could come into the conversation a little bit where there's a
- 13:53balance of, you know, I I feel like he's I feel like that, you
- 13:57know, the Japanese players always pick a coast.
- 14:01Feels like it's always a coast. So actually you Darvish was a
- 14:09Ranger? Didn't he start out as a Ranger?
- 14:12Yeah. I mean, more times than not, I
- 14:14think it's a safe bet, yeah. Yeah, 'cause I.
- 14:16Think you're right. Like it, it may sound silly, but
- 14:19it's like if you, if you're coming out of Japan, I just, I,
- 14:23I just don't know if the barbecue in the Midwest is
- 14:26enough to lure you there, you know, like.
- 14:28Well, I mean, you got it. Yeah.
- 14:30When you look at some of those big cities, like they have, you
- 14:35know, more cultural footprints there, I guess you could say
- 14:41versus, you know, I keep, I keep falling back in Kansas City, but
- 14:47like taking some ricochets. But yeah, I just don't, I don't
- 14:50see it there. You know, I don't see him going
- 14:54down to Atlanta or Houston. Just doesn't.
- 15:00It doesn't ring the same way. Yeah, I'm having, I'm, I'm
- 15:07really having a hard time visualizing the Kirk Cousins in
- 15:11Atlanta effect on a guy like Rokie Sasaki.
- 15:14Kirk Cousins is an anomaly, that's for sure.
- 15:18I mean you that. Man's awesome.
- 15:20You, more so than me, are very aware of the Atlanta effect on
- 15:24Kirk Cousins. Like from the day he got there
- 15:27his his intro press conference to today.
- 15:31That's a changed man. Oh yeah, for sure.
- 15:34Invited to a lot of barbecues for sure.
- 15:36Do we see a guy like Rokie Sasaki swag surfing with
- 15:41multiple chains around his neck? I I don't know.
- 15:44I don't know. Hard to say, yeah.
- 15:47These are questions that have to be asked though as as every team
- 15:51is in in the mix here, but a name that well, I.
- 15:55Was going to say, if you're the Orioles, you got to, you got to
- 16:00do something. You know what I mean?
- 16:01Like I'd, I'd like for you to do something, think you need to do
- 16:04something. And that's a, that's an easy
- 16:08one. And it's low risk.
- 16:09The price is just, it's low risk.
- 16:12He's young. You can groom him a little bit.
- 16:15Anyway, you're up. If you're the Orioles, you like
- 16:19Corbin Burns, walk out the door and go get Roki.
- 16:23Not the same. No, but I'm saying if that's the
- 16:27direction they're head, I'm not, I'm not suggesting or
- 16:29recommending that they do that. But if you let it, I know, but
- 16:34I'm saying if you let him walk out the door, that's a very easy
- 16:38pivot and that's a move where you could, you could easily
- 16:44justify the the, the move or or the pivot, I should say, due to
- 16:48the financial yeah, savings there.
- 16:52Like if that's what you want to fall back on.
- 16:54Again, not recommending that does it?
- 16:56Cap out. Does it cap out at that number?
- 17:00Does it cap at like the 7 1/2 or whatever it is?
- 17:05Can they go above that? What's cool about international
- 17:08money is that it can be, it can be traded, it can be included in
- 17:11transactions. Yep.
- 17:13So, you know, if say, for example, you know, it never
- 17:19happened, but like maybe the Mariners trade Julio Rodriguez
- 17:22and instead of kicking in some of the money, you know, for the
- 17:27for the contract, maybe they asked for money.
- 17:29But you know, like they can get money back.
- 17:31You can get you can kind of build off of that a little bit.
- 17:34So it's fun. It's fun to play with and it
- 17:38makes the conversations a lot more open, I think, a lot more
- 17:42opportunities. No, but what I was what I was
- 17:46going to what I was saying earlier, a guy that comes to
- 17:50mind is you Darvish, because apparently you Darvish has has
- 17:52served as a mentor to to Rokie. And he, I believe I read that
- 17:58has the same agent and also read that he helped him develop his
- 18:05slider was I believe the pitch that that.
- 18:10Would work. It's a budgetary move.
- 18:12They don't have a ton of money to work with.
- 18:15So like, if you take what I was proposing earlier where it's
- 18:17like, OK, maybe he does want to go to a team where he can just
- 18:21be the guy and, and sort of break free of the, the Japanese
- 18:27connection. It seems like most of the guys
- 18:29seek that out. I would say they come over
- 18:32there, but maybe I, I don't know, maybe he's different.
- 18:34If he is, throw that out the window.
- 18:39I I don't know. I I can't blame him, you know
- 18:42what I mean? Like if I move to a different
- 18:44country in my 1 connection, you know what I mean?
- 18:47Like, sure, I'm in a brand new city.
- 18:49I don't know anybody. I don't speak the language, I
- 18:51don't know the culture. Yeah, I would want to know some.
- 18:55I would want to have a teammate that I could fall back on and
- 18:59help that transition period. So it's a no brainer.
- 19:04It just kind of stinks for some of those teams that are like,
- 19:06Dang, we don't have anybody. I've been looking around the
- 19:11league, some of the some of who we some of these names you've
- 19:16already mentioned. But I mean, you've got you've
- 19:18got Yoshida, you've got Zenga, you've got Saya Suzuki in
- 19:24Chicago, Shota Imanaga in Chicago, you say Kikuchi, who's
- 19:31a free agent and then obviously out in LA that situation, but
- 19:41you've got Japanese ties there. I don't like the way Boston
- 19:44treats Yoshida. Can I say that?
- 19:47Absolutely. Yeah.
- 19:48It's very. It's a very strange situation.
- 19:51Very odd. It's really good.
- 19:54It's like we do not want you to even think about dreaming about
- 20:00touching the outfield grass. Yeah.
- 20:03So we want you to hit, but we're going to.
- 20:07Give you the absolute shortest side of a platoon that's ever
- 20:11been handed out in Major League Baseball.
- 20:13Yeah, I don't like it. We only want you to hit when
- 20:17it's overcast over 75° on Tuesdays.
- 20:23That's basically, that's basically a situation they've
- 20:25put Yoshida in. So jokes aside, I I don't know
- 20:30how much of AA rousing. That's what I'm saying.
- 20:34Like how much is Yoshida being like, skip it, I'll meet you
- 20:38there, I'll meet you somewhere else.
- 20:40It'd be nice to have you here, but I I'm not going.
- 20:42Out of here soon. Yeah, I'm not.
- 20:43I'm not going to point you in that direction.
- 20:45So I. Don't think of like rumors about
- 20:47him at the trade deadline too. Yeah, I'm pretty sure they were
- 20:51looking to trade him. For a.
- 20:53Good amount of time. Chicago's cool Imaga Suzuki
- 20:58trying to build a little something.
- 21:00That's a budgetary move. You know, I mean, selfishly, I
- 21:04would love to see this. I mean, just young talented kid
- 21:07look at this and go. I don't I'll pass on the LA
- 21:12thing. It'd be great.
- 21:14It'd be I mean, it would just blow up headlines for sure.
- 21:18But like, I just hope there's this, there's there's like an
- 21:22element of competitiveness in him that that revolves around
- 21:27wanting to not be on a super team.
- 21:29Like, let me let me team up with like an Imanaga in Chicago.
- 21:35And like, let's sort of, I mean, they're not going to necessarily
- 21:38compete with LA just with that sole addition because they
- 21:42obviously need to make more moves to match A-Team like the
- 21:45Dodgers. But like, let me be part of that
- 21:48process. Let me be part of, let me be
- 21:52part of the growth of a of an organization that's in the in
- 21:56the works, in, in, in progress of building themselves up to a
- 22:04echelon of the Dodgers, maybe not to the level, but in, in
- 22:09that same atmosphere. Also, you're you're if you
- 22:11succeed there, you're beloved. Like it's, it's a great spot.
- 22:18Some would say it's it's a perfect spot when it comes to
- 22:21like not a ton of pressure. You know, you are the Mets, you
- 22:25are the Yankees, you are the Dodgers, you are the Padres.
- 22:28There's immediate pressure, there's immediate expectations.
- 22:32Chicago, we're just kind of happy.
- 22:36Go lucky. We'll take what they can get if
- 22:40you win, we're happy if you lose.
- 22:44We're still drinking beer. We're still, we're still fans,
- 22:47we're still loving Chicago. So it's a funny aspect to that.
- 22:56What's the deal though? What's the deal with like the
- 22:58the minor league situation? Like what if it's a minor league
- 23:05contract? Is that, is that what he's
- 23:07they're saying he can't? Be added to.
- 23:09The 40 man like what is the stipulation there?
- 23:13Hold on here, I've got that somewhere.
- 23:21Respect on the crew neck, by the way.
- 23:23Thank you. Thank you.
- 23:25Cream, cream, You know it. Crew neck.
- 23:29You know it. Is Meredith dressing you
- 23:32nowadays? I'm dressing myself, though,
- 23:39Sasaki, hold on. So this is, according to ESPN.
- 23:41The timing of Sasaki's posting, which is yet to be set, sources
- 23:44said, will determine whether he falls into the 2024-2025
- 23:48international class. Like we talked about, when a
- 23:51player's posted, he has 45 day window to sign with a Major
- 23:53League team. Though Sasaki would join an
- 23:55organization on a minor league deal, A-Team can add him to its
- 23:58Major League roster before the 2025 season.
- 24:02So it sounds like regardless the international class, he can be
- 24:05added before the season starts. To what?
- 24:09I just don't get why it has to be considered a minor league
- 24:11deal. Yeah, that was it.
- 24:13That was the element of it that I wasn't quite tracking with.
- 24:16But sure, there's some fine print that explains it.
- 24:19But yeah, did not come across, said fine print.
- 24:22All right, good deal, good deal. Whatever.
- 24:26How do you feel about the health issues?
- 24:28Because like, let's face it, it's not something that that
- 24:34this transition is is putting to bed.
- 24:39You know, like there's a long history of injuries with Otani
- 24:45Yamamoto is another example of it.
- 24:47This year, I didn't look up Imanaga's numbers.
- 24:50I think he stayed fairly healthy.
- 24:53But Imanaga pitches differently. You know what I mean?
- 24:55He's he's 9293. He's soft and and kind of works
- 25:00at the bottom of the zone. A lot of spin when we're talking
- 25:02high Velo, we're just we're used to seeing these injuries.
- 25:07And I get that it's low risk. I get that there's, you know,
- 25:10not a ton of money right now, you know, Sanga being in that
- 25:15list, different injury, I think not an arm injury, but you just
- 25:20you have to have that as a question mark.
- 25:23You have to have that. And it's hard to grab a guy like
- 25:28this at his age and say you're immediately stepping into the
- 25:32rotation. You're immediately, you know,
- 25:35pitching in for us when the truth is like, we don't know if
- 25:40we can rely on a fully healthy season right now.
- 25:45Career high in innings was 129 in the third two years ago, back
- 25:51in 2022. This year he made 18 starts
- 25:57following an oblique tear which caused him to miss about 1/4 of
- 26:05his starts. So yeah, I mean.
- 26:10And for those that aren't familiar, I mean, we've talked
- 26:13about it before, but like it's, it's obviously a slightly
- 26:16different ball. It's a six man rotation.
- 26:21So the schedule changes up a little bit.
- 26:24And let's face it, I mean, I no disrespect to Japanese baseball,
- 26:29but Japanese hitters are not Major League Baseball hitters.
- 26:33So not just those differences, but you're coming into a league
- 26:36that has much better hitters, much better competition, and
- 26:40maybe you're trying to touch that one O 2 more often here
- 26:44than you were back home. And all of those are factors.
- 26:47All of those come into play. And it it sucks.
- 26:52Like I I don't want to continue to see these injuries, but they
- 26:55do continue to happen. And the Yamamoto was not an
- 27:01exception this year. Now it's again washed away
- 27:05because of winning. It's washed away because of a a
- 27:08trophy. But if he does go to a Tigers or
- 27:12a Cubs or, you know, a Mets or a team that may fall short, are we
- 27:18going to have that conversation over and over and over?
- 27:22And Show has the Unicorn, right? Because he hits.
- 27:26And even through the injury, he still provides MVP caliber play.
- 27:30But like for a pitcher only it's part of the combo.
- 27:39I guess that's what's nice is if it's like, man, whatever it was
- 27:42$6 million we missed out on this year.
- 27:44You know, that's why I feel like any team that signs him, that
- 27:50can't be your sole starting pitching edition in this
- 27:54offseason. It can't be your.
- 27:55You know all chips in the middle of the table on this.
- 27:59I mean, you have to, you have to think, you have to wonder if
- 28:03Major League Baseball isn't already preparing itself to
- 28:07equip or adopt, I should say a, a six man rotation because.
- 28:14As well with. With the, the value, I mean, I,
- 28:17I know that they're, they're trying to incorporate or
- 28:21they're, they're talking about implementing regulations to for
- 28:25minimum innings and this and that.
- 28:27I understand that. But just on a perception level,
- 28:32the, the value of starting pitchers is just plummeting.
- 28:36And then with this influx of talent from from overseas as as
- 28:40we continue and we've been talking about this for years, as
- 28:44the, the, the question marks sort of diminish surrounding the
- 28:51capabilities and, and the ability to hang on behalf of
- 28:55these, these guys coming over from Japan.
- 28:57Like as we sort of put that to bed and we're like, OK, these
- 29:01guys are proving themselves more.
- 29:03So year after year after year there, you can only imagine that
- 29:07that the number of guys that comes over is only going to
- 29:10increase. So with that said, you have to
- 29:13wonder if every team ends up with one, maybe even two of
- 29:19these stars that are coming over from Japan.
- 29:22Like maybe they're looking around and and their front
- 29:24office going well, I mean, there's some other teams around
- 29:27the league that are or that have already shifted to the six man
- 29:31rotation. Why don't we?
- 29:32Yeah. I I think you have to be willing
- 29:36to, if you make that addition, you have to be willing to, it
- 29:41makes sense if, if you're going to especially, you know, for
- 29:45like someone getting the Yamamoto contract, that just
- 29:49feels like, yeah, we, you know, we're investing that kind of
- 29:52money. Let's make sure that we're it's
- 29:57like putting the, you know, the wrong gas in, in a premium, you
- 30:00know, like not putting premium gas in a luxury vehicle.
- 30:03You're putting in, you know, regular gas and it's like
- 30:06eventually you're going to run into some issues.
- 30:08Why don't we just adjust to the, you know, the vehicle and if a
- 30:12team can adjust to their signing, I like it.
- 30:18But baseball's always, you know, it's, it's just kind of feels
- 30:21this way league wide right now. Everybody's kind of going that
- 30:24direction. You're not getting a ton of
- 30:26length out of teams. By the way, I was scrolling
- 30:28through and I think I saw it was, I don't remember what year
- 30:32it was that Pedro got his first Cy Young.
- 30:35I think it was like 97, something like that.
- 30:40He was an Expo. Yeah, that sounds right.
- 30:43Sub 3 ERA over 300 punches, 13 complete games.
- 30:53You don't have. You don't.
- 30:54You just don't see that anymore. You just don't see that 97,
- 31:00Yeah. 97 Yeah, just wild. I missed those days.
- 31:04Had a. War of nine that year.
- 31:09But yeah, I, I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer.
- 31:12I don't mean to, you know, be negative about it.
- 31:16It's just, it's something to consider.
- 31:17I think it's a part of the equation now, as it as it always
- 31:21has been. It's just there's less risk
- 31:25involved because you're not, you know, sending 300 mil to this
- 31:27guy yet. Speaking of money, the Marlins
- 31:35are forking over some cash for a new manager have hired LA
- 31:41Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough.
- 31:44Nailed it there it. Is Clayton McCullough Is.
- 31:48That Irish I think it is. It can only go one of two ways.
- 31:55I thought initially maybe it was McAuliffe.
- 31:58Didn't feel right. Yeah, it didn't didn't hit
- 32:00right. Yeah, I think it's McCullough.
- 32:02I verified with with a few YouTube videos that I pulled up
- 32:06super quick. McCullough.
- 32:09Clayton McCullough is taking over for Skip Schumacher.
- 32:17This seems like such a Marlins move, you know?
- 32:22I mean, there's worse organizations to go pluck your
- 32:24next manager from, you know? I that's what I'm saying.
- 32:27That's exactly what I'm saying. It's like it's like, it just
- 32:32seems like APR move. You know what I mean?
- 32:37Bringing in the winning culture. What's his first name?
- 32:41Clayton Clayton Clayton McCullough.
- 32:45I based on the headline picture, he's the first base coach.
- 32:49Is that what that looked like? I saw like a home run
- 32:51celebration. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:55All right. I mentioned that.
- 32:57Oh, did you? I wasn't listening.
- 32:59No, I know. It's all right.
- 33:00I. Was just waiting for you to try
- 33:01and pronounce it. Good stuff, good stuff.
- 33:04Why? At least let's grab something
- 33:07positive out of this. They did it early enough in the
- 33:12offseason. Allow him to create whatever
- 33:16kind of culture he wants to create down there.
- 33:21Whatever. I'm fully out of the Marlins,
- 33:23dude. You tried.
- 33:25You really tried. You gave it your.
- 33:27You gave it your. Best ever there.
- 33:29Yeah, the old college try, but I'm just I'm all down there.
- 33:32He was, albeit in the minors, he was a career catcher, so there
- 33:40is that element to it. Always like that.
- 33:42You love your catchers. You love your catchers at the
- 33:44helm. Yeah, nothing against Clayton.
- 33:46It's it's just the Marlins are what's worse than a dumpster
- 33:51fire? The Marlins 50 feet of crap
- 34:04dumpster fire. The Miami is Marlins.
- 34:08Is Marlins, Rockies are in there somewhere?
- 34:11They're right. They're yeah, they're pretty
- 34:14stinky too. Yeah, I mean, heck of.
- 34:20A week, Yeah, we're going to have to start coming up with
- 34:26some stuff. No, no, I'm I'm that's a
- 34:28separate thing I'm saying from this item, though, Like I I'm
- 34:32trying to find a positive. Really the only thing that I can
- 34:35get from it to your point is like the whole winning culture
- 34:38thing, but it's like we sort of tried that with Don Mattingly.
- 34:43And I'm I'm not saying Clayton McCullough is Don Don Mattingly,
- 34:46but it's we we've seen this before.
- 34:48Skip Schumacher, obviously a great baseball mind we that we
- 34:51brought him in for what it's just it seems like another to
- 34:57your point, maybe it maybe APR move.
- 34:59It just seems like another stab at like, let's just bring in a
- 35:03guy that has a little bit of winning pedigree on his resume
- 35:08and just see what he can do with our rather disappointing roster.
- 35:16Roster, front office, farm, you name it.
- 35:25No, don't jump the gun. Do the the Marlins have a decent
- 35:28farm, don't they? I would guess they're out of the
- 35:34top 10. Out of the top ten, I'm seeing
- 35:43the last list. Somebody can correct me if I'm
- 35:46wrong. I just pulled the the 1st result
- 35:48here. I I'm seeing the Marlins listed
- 35:51at the in season 2024 rankings, which I'm sure they're coming
- 35:56out with the end of season It's. Always new rankings.
- 36:01Yeah, but the list I'm looking at has them 15th.
- 36:05Told you. Which is crazy because the the
- 36:08they started the they started the season this past year 20.
- 36:13Like the 2024 season, they started the preseason 29th.
- 36:16Yeah, it's good for what? What's the point?
- 36:22What's the point of having that farm?
- 36:24What are you going to do with it?
- 36:27They're going to succeed for a year, few years, and then you
- 36:30ship them out. What a train wreck, dude.
- 36:34Good luck, McCullough. Enjoy.
- 36:38Like good for you, you guys management experience, but.
- 36:41You could manage in a worse place.
- 36:43I'm not going to like. My, it, it does have like the
- 36:46aspect that it is Miami, you know, at least it's not.
- 36:51I don't like Tampa Bay. Oh, we didn't even talk about
- 36:54which I mean, we at this point we don't have to because it's
- 36:57outdated. But did we even talk about did
- 37:02we cover Will Venable? I feel like we did, didn't we?
- 37:07Did we not? That must have been, I don't
- 37:14remember when that happened, but must have been like at a weird
- 37:17time with our recording schedule.
- 37:18But yeah, I mean, that you look at that situation, it's like,
- 37:21well, at least this is not Chicago.
- 37:23At least it's not Will Venable falling into a similar situation
- 37:29with the roster construction but also has to deal with just
- 37:33garbage weather. What do you think is next for
- 37:35Grady Sizemore? What do you do next?
- 37:40I really thought maybe they just give him a shot, you know, I.
- 37:43Don't get it. I don't get what the what the
- 37:50Some people are just really tone deaf.
- 37:52Some organizations don't understand.
- 37:58A lot of these decisions seem just really simple.
- 38:00And I understand that these are like million, billion dollar
- 38:03businesses, franchises. I get it.
- 38:06But like, I don't know, maybe you have too many people in the
- 38:12room that think they're the smartest person in the room and
- 38:15they they out think themselves. Is that what the White Sox are
- 38:18doing? Is that what the Marlins are
- 38:20doing? I don't think they're out
- 38:21thinking anything. It's hard to say.
- 38:28Hard to say. You know who else is not
- 38:29thinking? Wander Franco, arrested today
- 38:33actually in the Dr. in what is being described as an harmed
- 38:41altercation. How does this?
- 38:44How does this happen? Is my.
- 38:46Question guy not in prison. That's what I'm saying I.
- 38:50Think roaming around. I'm tired of seeing the clips of
- 38:52you hitting BP, by the way, in Ray's gear.
- 38:56Take that off, stay away from kids and go fall off a Cliff
- 39:03somewhere. Police sources confirm that
- 39:08Franco and an unarmed an unnamed woman were being held for
- 39:12questioning following the incident.
- 39:15Do we know the age of the unnamed woman?
- 39:17This guy stinks. How is he roaming around?
- 39:26Sort of say one of the guns presumably belonged to Franco,
- 39:29who was allegedly fighting with the other man over the woman's
- 39:32attention. Come on, man, you got to.
- 39:35I mean, I understand you're probably you're seeing the
- 39:38writing on the wall, but like, give yourself even the slimmest
- 39:42chance to get out of this with some sliver of dignity.
- 39:50The reason you're in this predicament in the 1st place was
- 39:53over an underage woman and now you're getting an armed
- 39:57altercations over a woman. Guy sucks.
- 40:02This guy's got major just woman issues.
- 40:09There's no other way to put it. I I don't get it.
- 40:13This guy's fixated on trying to please the opposite sex.
- 40:17I don't get it. Put them in jail.
- 40:21What is the judicial system doing down there?
- 40:24What we got going on? I mean, can we start with a
- 40:27vasectomy first? Maybe a castration?
- 40:35Let's get rid of. This, I guess either or.
- 40:39I don't know. I don't know if that'll fix the
- 40:41problem, but it can't hurt, right?
- 40:43I don't, I don't know. This guy sucks if I'm the race.
- 40:49Also. Doing whatever I can to get that
- 40:52guy to stop wearing our logo. That's a good point.
- 40:58No, I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 41:00I've seen the same video. So I'm like this just feel this
- 41:02feels wrong. It feels like you're somehow
- 41:05holding out hope that you're coming back.
- 41:06You're not coming back. You're not, you're not coming
- 41:09back. No, but I, I made a mistake
- 41:13earlier. I said underage woman.
- 41:14This was very much an underage girl.
- 41:16Girl. Yes, it's just a girl.
- 41:18Without a doubt. So yeah, that's that's the
- 41:22latest on Wanda Franco. But other than that.
- 41:25That's the last time I want to hear about this guy.
- 41:29No more headlines. You did.
- 41:30You know it's a slow week and this idiot is cracking.
- 41:34Cracking headlines. Well, I mean, if it came out and
- 41:39was like Wanda Franco's unpaid leave has been extended another
- 41:46like whatever, that wasn't going to include that.
- 41:48But the fact that the fact that he was in an an armed
- 41:51altercation, I was like, OK, well, I feel like we at least
- 41:55got to didn't mention it. But yeah, I'm with you.
- 41:58I'm over. I'm over talking Wanda Franco.
- 42:01Yeah. But that's all I got.
- 42:05We need to, we need to inject some, some change UPS into our
- 42:09into our schedule. That really gets the some.
- 42:12Three O change. UPS people going.
- 42:14At least I hope it does. I'd like to think people would
- 42:18be honest with us if they. The people loved it.
- 42:20They've they've reached out to me and I'm not that I'm not
- 42:23blowing smoke. They've legitimately reached out
- 42:25to me. They love the they love the
- 42:27Costco episode we did. They loved the a lot of people
- 42:31related to the flying episode. We did a lot of people.
- 42:38Flying, yeah, we got to get some good ones in there.
- 42:44Where's? Pizza.
- 42:46Just talk pizza. We could yeah have have we not
- 42:49done a pizza 1 I. Don't think we've done pizza.
- 42:51One would. Be good we could we could talk
- 42:53pizza for. Because it all day.
- 42:56Hours, there's so much there, you wouldn't even be able to
- 42:59cover all the things that you'd want to.
- 43:00You'd need to talk about pizza and for if if you're a new
- 43:03listener, you'd have no idea what we're talking about in the
- 43:06offseason. Did we?
- 43:07Did we start it two offseasons ago?
- 43:12Maybe. I feel like we did two
- 43:14offseasons ago or maybe last offseason we started doing, we
- 43:18started introducing this segment in the offseason called Three O
- 43:21change UPS. Obviously you have the three O
- 43:22Take, which is the podcast, which by the way, thank you for
- 43:26listening, Thank you for watching.
- 43:28We love your sport, appreciate it.
- 43:30But the the three O change UPS was just a way for us to get
- 43:35into some topics that are not baseball related.
- 43:39So to where we sort of change things up and talk about non
- 43:43baseball things. We've talked about talked about
- 43:47fast food, we've talked about Costco, we've talked about
- 43:49flying. We've done Thanksgiving.
- 43:53We need we got to do Christmas this year.
- 43:55We got to get a. Christmas 1 Christmas one would
- 43:57would go hard and we you could talk hours on on all things
- 44:02Christmas. Yeah.
- 44:04Baseball movies, I think, right? Board.
- 44:06Well, now that's a baseball thing.
- 44:08Oh, this? Yeah, sure, sure.
- 44:10We've done board games. We there's some other things we
- 44:13can get in there. What is pizza?
- 44:15Yeah, I I say we make pizza. Candy.
- 44:18We did candy. Right.
- 44:19I think we did do candy, cereal. Did we do cereal?
- 44:22A lot of food stuff we like. We like, you know.
- 44:26Pizza, I say. Oh, we, I say pizza.
- 44:27Is a good one, huh? We go pizza, let's go pizza like
- 44:31that. And the beautiful thing, again,
- 44:32if you're a new listener and you're and you're sort of
- 44:34unfamiliar with this, the beautiful thing about it is like
- 44:36it's just so it's not, it's not tacked on to these episodes.
- 44:40It's just a bonus pod. Yeah, we don't.
- 44:42Like you don't listen you. Know bonus pods I should say
- 44:45that we just drop throughout the offseason and if you don't want
- 44:48to listen so be it you can stick with the baseball talk but it
- 44:52gives you a chance to to hear some some takes of hours on
- 44:55things non base prolated. So yeah, I said.
- 45:00What about the ocean That's. One of my worst fears, if not my
- 45:07worst fear. I think so.
- 45:08Too deep. Deep, dark water.
- 45:10Like we could really, we could really do that.
- 45:14We could. I like that.
- 45:17Treasure hunting, the Titanic. All things all things open.
- 45:22Sea pirates, Pirates. Tsunamis.
- 45:27We're watching. What are those typhoon things?
- 45:32Hurricanes, technically, What else you got?
- 45:35What? Are you watching?
- 45:35Speaking of pirates, you you guys watching the Outer Banks at
- 45:39all? No, I thought that was like a
- 45:41teenager show. Is that like a?
- 45:43They're like supposed to be high schoolers slash like of college.
- 45:47Age. There we go.
- 45:48I'm telling you, dude, it's a great show.
- 45:51It's a fantastic show, and I'm not going to spoil anything if
- 45:55we do have any Outer Banks fans here that maybe haven't gotten
- 45:58to the finale of Season 4. But when you get to it, feel
- 46:03free to hit me up in the messages and we can talk things
- 46:06through together because I'm tough, tough place.
- 46:12We're currently watching, it's called Physical 100.
- 46:16It's on Netflix and it's like a Korean like fitness show and
- 46:27it's sick. It's so sick.
- 46:30Physical 100. Physical One. 100 and you got to
- 46:33watch it in Korean makes it so much better.
- 46:36OK, sure. I'm serious watching like we're
- 46:40watching. We got the English subtitles
- 46:41going. It's sick.
- 46:43It's like they bring in 100 people that are like somewhere
- 46:46like bodybuilders, somewhere like CrossFit, somewhere like
- 46:51like gymnasts, somewhere like Olymp, like Olympians, like all
- 46:56kinds. And they just do like physical
- 46:58challenges and they slowly get eliminated to figure out like
