- 0:00Spacex's Starship Flight 9 claims to solve the feed line
- 0:03resonance that doomed its predecessor, Starship Flight 8,
- 0:07and our reinforced methane ducts and updated TPS tiles enough to
- 0:12avert another metal shower inferno.
- 0:15Now, will these engineering upgrades finally achieve orbit,
- 0:19or will a Raptor reignition expose an even deeper design
- 0:22flaw of Starship? SpaceX has not announced a firm
- 0:26date for Starship's Flight 9, but indications point to a late
- 0:30April or early May 2025 target. And after the flight 8 test on
- 0:35March 6th, 2025 ended prematurely, Elon Musk called it
- 0:39a minor set back and stayed in. The next ship will be ready in
- 0:43four to six weeks. Now, this timeline would put
- 0:45Flight 9 no earlier than roughly April 20th through May 4th of
- 0:502025, assuming issues are resolved quickly.
- 0:54Now, the launch window in exact time remain to be determined,
- 0:58pending technical readiness and regulatory approval, of course.
- 1:02And as with previous Starship tests, the launch site will be
- 1:05Spacex's Star Base facility in Boca Chica, Texas, where the
- 1:09Starship Super Heavy stack is integrated on the orbital
- 1:13launchpad. Now, SpaceX will need a green
- 1:16light from the FAA before launch, and the FAA is requiring
- 1:19a mishap investigation into the Flight 8 failure.
- 1:22But it did allow Flight 8 to proceed even while the Flight 7
- 1:26investigation was still open. That's after reviewing Spacex's
- 1:30initial fixes and barring any regulatory hold UPS, SpaceX
- 1:34appears eager to attempt Flight 9 as soon as the vehicle and
- 1:39licenses are ready. Now we all again speculate about
- 1:43Elon Musk targeting 420 or 69AS launch dates, but officially the
- 1:49schedule will depend on when engineering and FAA constraints
- 1:53are resolved. The next test will use a new
- 1:56Starship prototype, Ship 35, paired with Booster 16.
- 2:00Now, both Ship 35 and B16 have already undergone cryogenic
- 2:04proof tests as Spacex's Massey test site in Texas, indicating
- 2:09they're being prepped for launch.
- 2:10Now Ship 35 is a Block 2 Starship, part of an upgraded
- 2:13series that debuted on Flight 7 and Block 2.
- 2:18Vehicles feature numerous structural, avionics and system
- 2:22improvements over earlier prototypes.
- 2:24For example, they're lighter and designed for higher performance
- 2:27and eventual reusability. SpaceX modified the methyl ox,
- 2:31the methane and oxygen feed system on Block 2 ships, routing
- 2:35methane to the Starships 3 Vacuum Raptors via 3 long,
- 2:39thinner feed lines instead of a single main feed.
- 2:43This change was intended to improve propellant flow, but it
- 2:46may have inadvertently introduced a new issue.
- 2:49Now both Block 2 ships flown so far, Ship 33 on Flight 7 and
- 2:54ship 34 on Flight 8, were lost during their upper stage burn.
- 2:59So SpaceX has been analyzing what went wrong.
- 3:02Flight 7th, back in January 16th of 2025 saw a leak or a harmonic
- 3:07resonance in the ship that caused engines to shut down,
- 3:11while Flight 8, which happened in March 6th of 20 in 25,
- 3:14suffered an apparent Raptor vacuum engine explosion that's
- 3:18about 8 minutes into flight, which took out all three of the
- 3:22ship's main engines and sent it into an uncontrollable tumble.
- 3:26Investigation suggests that the methane propellant feed lines
- 3:29might be vibrating at a damaging frequency as the fuel tank
- 3:34empties, leading to cracks or leaks that cause engine fires in
- 3:38flight 8 cameras captured a large methane leak and a fire in
- 3:43Ship 34's engine Bay moments before the vehicle was
- 3:46destroyed. And in short, the Block 2 design
- 3:49changes while boosting performance seem to have
- 3:52introduced a fuel plumbing issue that must be fixed to prevent
- 3:57another mid air failure. Hey real quick I want to make a

- 4:44SpaceX is implementing mitigations for this feed line
- 4:47vibration leak problem ahead of Flight 9 and Musk characterize.
- 4:51The issue is a minor one that can be solved relatively
- 4:54quickly, and engineers are likely exploring solutions such
- 4:58as strengthening or better supporting the methane downcomer
- 5:02tubes, any vibration dampers, or also adjusting engine start
- 5:06procedures. And how extensive the fix will
- 5:09be is still unknown. If it's a simple tweak, SpaceX
- 5:12can just retrofit Ship 35 and 36, which is almost nearly
- 5:17complete with the solution now. If a major redesign is required,
- 5:21however, those vehicles might even be bypassed or scrapped in
- 5:25favor of redesigned Ship 37, which would imply a longer
- 5:29delay. But as of now, Ship 35 is passed
- 5:333 cryo proof tests and returned to the production site for
- 5:36possible modifications. Now, teams worked on Ship 36's
- 5:40assembly immediately after Flight 8, indicating SpaceX is
- 5:44pressing forward on multiple fronts.
- 5:47Now, aside from the propellant feed fix, Flight 9 Starship will
- 5:52likely incorporate incremental improvements learned from prior
- 5:56flights, and for instance, Ship 35 is reported to have
- 5:59reinforced catch pins or attachment points on a
- 6:02structure. These are fixtures that would
- 6:05eventually allow a Starship to be caught by the launch tower's
- 6:09arms on descent, similar to how the Super Heavy boosters are
- 6:13caught, rather than just belly flopping into the ocean.
- 6:15SpaceX has already successfully caught multiple boosters with
- 6:19the Mecca Zilla Tower arms, most recently Booster 15 on Flight 8,
- 6:23and even adjusted the catch technique to handle kind of off
- 6:27center landings. And the tower arms and
- 6:30chopsticks were fine-tuned during Flight 8's booster catch,
- 6:33demonstrating they can move to recenter a slightly misaligned
- 6:37booster and dampen any post catch swaying.
- 6:41And while Starship catches are not expected on Flight 9, SpaceX
- 6:44will want at least one Starship to survive re entry intact
- 6:48before attempting to grab one out of the sky.
- 6:51The presence of catch hardware on Ship 35 shows SpaceX is
- 6:54looking ahead to future recovery attempts.
- 6:57Other minor changes being tested on recent ships include
- 7:00adjustments to the heat shield, such as using fewer tiles in
- 7:03certain areas, experimenting with actively cooled tiles, and
- 7:07trying an ablative coating in some spots.
- 7:11Now that's to improve durability and to reduce weight of the
- 7:13ship. And in some, Flight 9 vehicles
- 7:15should be the most advanced Starship configuration yet,
- 7:19incorporating fixes from the last two failures and geared
- 7:22toward achieving a fully successful mission.
- 7:25Flight 9's timing is directly tied to the resolution of the
- 7:28issues and the completion of the required safety reviews.
- 7:32And after Flight 8's anomaly, the FAA opened a new mishap
- 7:36investigation, which must be at least preliminary address before
- 7:40another launch. That's a normal step, though.
- 7:42The FAA had also kept the Flight 7 investigation open, but still
- 7:46granted an updated license for Flight 8 once SpaceX provided
- 7:50initial data in mitigation for Flight 9.
- 7:52SpaceX will similarly need to demonstrate that the causes of
- 7:56the previous failures are understood and corrected.
- 7:58The company's aggressive four to six week turn around goal
- 8:01suggests they believe only modest weeks are needed.
- 8:05But if the fix takes longer than expected, like a significant
- 8:08time, like a new redesign, Flight 9 could slip beyond May
- 8:122025. The gap between Flight 7 and
- 8:15Flight 8 was about 49 days. A similar or slightly longer
- 8:18interval after the March 6th flight puts a tentative launch
- 8:22in the late April to mid-May time frame.
- 8:24Internally though, SpaceX is continuing to prep hardware,
- 8:28testing ship 35B16, repairs, improvements to ground systems
- 8:33and etcetera. So they aren't idle while
- 8:36analysis is under way. They're still building that
- 8:38thing. It's worth noting that earlier
- 8:40targets have already been pushed.
- 8:42Prior to the recent failures, Elon had signalled a rapid
- 8:46flight cadence for Starship in 2025, aiming for possibility of
- 8:51launch every month or two. Kathy leaders from Starbase said
- 8:54in 2024, the company hoped to conduct 25 Starship launches in
- 8:582025. This is a huge goal that would
- 9:02require quick turnarounds for the team.
- 9:05Now, the dual failures of 33 and 34 ships have forced a bit more
- 9:09caution. Now they have to work on these
- 9:11things. Flight 8 was originally rumored
- 9:13to fly in February but end up launching in March after
- 9:16additional checks and a brief weather delay that with two
- 9:20back-to-back ship losses. SpaceX appears willing to take a
- 9:24few extra weeks if needed to implement the fixes.
- 9:27No official delay of Flight 9 has been announced since the
- 9:30exact date isn't known yet, but effectively the schedule has
- 9:34slid from the ultra optimistic scenario.
- 9:37Now, the expected rescheduling will become clearer once the FAA
- 9:40concurs that the new design or procedure is safe.
- 9:43If the fixes work and Flight 9 succeeds, SpaceX could quickly
- 9:47ramp up the pace afterwards, but until then the schedule remains
- 9:52no earlier than April of 2025 and also subject to change.
- 9:56Now the overall mission plan for Starship Flight 9 will be
- 9:59similar to Flight 7 and 8, aiming to test the full stacks
- 10:03performance and hopefully achieve the first mostly
- 10:06successful end to end flight of this Starship system.
- 10:09Super Heavy Booster. As before, the Super Heavy first
- 10:12stage booster 16 will ignite its 33 Raptors and propel the
- 10:16Starship to the edge of space in about 2 1/2 minutes.
- 10:19After liftoff, the stages will separate.
- 10:21The booster will then execute a flip maneuver and attempt to fly
- 10:25back to Starbase for recovery. SpaceX will again use the Mecca
- 10:29Zilla tower arms to catch the returning booster out of the
- 10:31air, as was done in flights 5-7 and eight.
- 10:36This become a routine objective for SpaceX.
- 10:39Flight 8's booster, for instance, had a picture perfect
- 10:42ascent, and it was successfully caught despite a couple of
- 10:45engine relay hiccups. But you'd expect Flight 9's
- 10:47booster to perform a similar boost back and landing profile,
- 10:51demonstrating any improvements in reliability and precision.
- 10:55And a successful booster catch on Flight 9 would mark the 4th
- 10:58consecutive recovered Super Heavy, firmly proving that
- 11:02aspect of the system. Meanwhile, Ship 35 will continue
- 11:06on an orbital velocity trajectory once separated.
- 11:09The exact flight profile is still being finalized and may
- 11:12depend on how confident SpaceX is after implementing all of
- 11:15these fixes, but the stated goal is to push the Starship further
- 11:19toward orbit and safely a temporary entry on flight 7 and
- 11:238. The plan was to follow a long
- 11:25ballistic arc nearly around the globe.
- 11:28After stage separation, the Starship would ignite its six
- 11:31engines, 3 sea Level, 3 vacuum to accelerate to near orbital
- 11:36speeds, then coast and eventually perform a controlled
- 11:39re entry and a splashdown. In both cases the target was a
- 11:43splashdown in the ocean. Roughly 1 hour after launch,
- 11:47Flight 7 targeted the Indian Ocean.
- 11:49Flight 9 will likely attempt a similar path, effectively an
- 11:52almost orbital test where the ship gains enough velocity to re
- 11:56enter around the other side of Earth but not to remain in
- 11:59orbit. If all systems are functioning
- 12:01perfectly, SpaceX might even try to achieve a minimal low Earth
- 12:05orbit on Flight 9, since Ship 35 is a full orbital capable
- 12:10vehicle. However, the safer plan is to
- 12:12retain a slight velocity shortfall so that the ship RE
- 12:16enters on its own pass, ensuring it comes down in a known remote
- 12:21area even if communications are lost.
- 12:23SpaceX has not confirmed the exact landing zone yet publicly.
- 12:27Previously, trajectories hinted at a RE entry near Hawaii or in
- 12:31the Indian Ocean, but it could be adjusted.
- 12:33The primary objective is to get the Starship stage through
- 12:36atmospheric RE entry intact, demonstrating that the vehicle
- 12:39can survive the fiery return from orbital speeds.
- 12:43Both recent flights failed before this phase, so simply
- 12:47having ship 35 still functional at re entry interface would be a
- 12:51major milestone. And in addition to the core
- 12:54flight goals, stage separation, engine restarts, thermal
- 12:58protection during re entry, Flight 9 is expected to carry
- 13:02and deploy some test payloads. Now, Like its predecessors, Ship
- 13:0635 will likely be loaded with a batch of Starling satellite
- 13:10simulators. They're mass dummies
- 13:11representing Starling version 2 minis mounted at a dispenser in
- 13:16its payload Bay. Flight 7 was set to carry 10
- 13:19dummy star lengths, about 20 tons total, and test the
- 13:23deployment mechanism in space. And Flight 8 carried four of
- 13:26these simulators, possibly to reduced weight during the
- 13:29troubleshooting phase. Flight 9 will probably include a
- 13:32deployment demo as well, and if the vehicle stays stable after
- 13:36main engine cut off, engineers would try ejecting the dummy
- 13:39satellites to validate the release system and observe how
- 13:43the Starship handles shifting its mass in microgravity.
- 13:46Any successful deployed test payload would simply fall into
- 13:49the ocean later as they're non functional.
- 13:52But proving out the deployment process is key for future
- 13:56missions where Starship will launch actual Starlink
- 13:59satellites or other cargo. And additionally, SpaceX will be
- 14:03gathering data on Starship's aerodynamics and heat shield
- 14:06performance. The profile is designed to
- 14:08stress the ship's flaps and thermal protection by coming in
- 14:11steeply, which helps evaluate the effect of tile loss or
- 14:15damage and any changes made to the heat shield design.
- 14:19And in Flight 8, for example, one of the forward flaps was
- 14:22found severely damaged. Post re entry for Flight 9,
- 14:25engineers will watch how Ship 35's revised heat shield layout
- 14:29holds up. The hope is to see the ship
- 14:32maintain control through re entry performance, landing flip
- 14:35maneuver and execute a final descent burn rather than coming
- 14:40back to land on the pad, which is too risky at this stage.
- 14:43The plan is to have the Starship in for a soft landing in water,
- 14:46essentially a controlled belly flop into the ocean.
- 14:49This was successfully done on flight 5 back in 2024, which is
- 14:54ship 30 which gently splashed down in the Indian Ocean after
- 14:59re entry. Ship 30 did not survive long
- 15:01after splashdown, it exploded a few seconds after hitting the
- 15:04water, but it proved the Starship could re enter and
- 15:07attempt the landing burn accurately and Flight 9 will try
- 15:10to repeat that feat with the more advanced ship 35.
- 15:14And a successful outcome would be defined as the boosters
- 15:19recovered, the Starship returns and it also reaches space and it
- 15:24returns to the atmosphere on target and as much data as
- 15:27possible as collected up to the moment of splashdown.
- 15:30Now, even if the Starship vehicle is not recovered intact,
- 15:34performing all these steps would be a huge step forward for
- 15:39SpaceX. Now looking further into the
- 15:41future, though, Spacex's end goal is to make Starship fully
- 15:45reusable, with both stages being caught by the ground towers.
- 15:49Flight 9 moves closer to that by hopefully validating the
- 15:52Starship's durability and controllability.
- 15:55If all goes well, Elon Musk has indicated SpaceX could attempt a
- 15:59Starship catch with a tower within a few months thereafter,
- 16:03possibly as soon as Flight 10 or 11.
- 16:06But for now, Flight 9's mission is a critical demonstration.
- 16:09It'll show whether the design tweaks have solved the issues
- 16:12that caused the last two failures, and the objectives are
- 16:15clear. Prove the fixes reach or almost
- 16:18reach orbit, deploy test payloads, and bring the ship
- 16:21back through reentry. Successfully achieving these
- 16:24will pave the way for future flights, higher payload
- 16:28missions, and eventually orbital refueling and moon landings as
- 16:32planned under NASA's Artemis program.
