- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Wednesday, it's the
- 0:159th of October and you have pressed play on a chapter a day.
- 0:21Bible reading. And that is what we do friends.
- 0:24We read a chapter of God's word every day so that your and my
- 0:29days can be punctuated and filled with the words of our God
- 0:33ringing in our ears and bouncing around our minds as we go about
- 0:37living our daily lives. And sometimes, you know, we
- 0:41might read through the Gospels. Oh, and it's all so obvious, and
- 0:45it's Jesus, and it's Him doing his thing.
- 0:48And other times we find ourselves where we are at the
- 0:50moment, reading through these stories from the Old Testament,
- 0:55reading about God's people as they returned to their homeland
- 0:59after time in exile in Ezra and Nehemiah.
- 1:02And these stories sometimes feel a little dry in comparison with
- 1:07the New Testament stories. But this is the backdrop, This
- 1:11is the heritage and the back story to which Jesus arrives
- 1:15from. And these are God's people
- 1:18setting up that very same city that Jesus, some 400 years
- 1:22later, is going to be walking through with these stories
- 1:26shaping his heart and his mind, as well as the people that he
- 1:31speaks with and deals with. So this really is US
- 1:35understanding the context in which Jesus comes and just
- 1:39radically blows up everything the way that they thought it was
- 1:43going to be and shows us a different way.
- 1:46So back in these days when you sinned and and turned your back
- 1:49on God, if you didn't do it so badly that God decided to punish
- 1:53you, you would come back to God with repentance and with
- 1:57sacrificial offerings and this would restore relationship.
- 2:01But we live in a new covenant, don't we, friends, where this
- 2:04great sacrifice has been offered in the form of Jesus for us.
- 2:09So let us read about this backdrop.
- 2:11Let us read the next chapter, in fact, the last chapter of Ezra
- 2:14before we continue in the story in the book of Nehemiah reading
- 2:18together today, Ezra chapter 10. While Ezra prayed and made this
- 2:33confession, weeping and lying face down on the ground in front
- 2:37of the temple of God, a very large crowd of people from
- 2:40Israel, men, women, and children, gathered and wept
- 2:45bitterly with him. Then Shecheniah son of Jehiel, a
- 2:49descendant of Elam, said to Ezra, We have been unfaithful to
- 2:54our God, for we have married these Pagan women of the land.
- 2:59But in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.
- 3:02Let us now make a covenant with our God to divorce our Pagan
- 3:06wives and to send them away with their children.
- 3:09We will follow the advice given by you and by the others who
- 3:12respect the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the
- 3:16law of God. Get up, for it is your duty to
- 3:19tell us how to proceed in setting things straight.
- 3:22We are behind you, so be strong and take action.
- 3:27So Ezra stood up and demanded that the leaders of the priests
- 3:31and the Levites and all the people of Israel swear that they
- 3:34would do as Shecheniah had said, and they all swore a solemn
- 3:39oath. Then Ezra left the front of the
- 3:42temple of God and went to the room of Jehovah Nun, son of
- 3:46Eliashib. He spent the night there without
- 3:49eating or drinking anything. He was still in mourning because
- 3:52of the unfaithfulness of the returned exiles.
- 3:56Then the proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem
- 4:00that all the Exiles should come to Jerusalem.
- 4:03Those who failed to come within three days would, if the leaders
- 4:07and elders so decided, forfeit all their property and be
- 4:11expelled from the assembly of the Exiles.
- 4:14Within three days all the people of Judah and Benjamin had
- 4:18gathered in Jerusalem. This took place on December
- 4:2119th, and all the people were sitting in the square before the
- 4:25temple of God. They were trembling, both
- 4:28because of the seriousness of the matter and because it was
- 4:31raining. Then Ezra, the priest stood and
- 4:35said to them, You have committed a terrible sin by marrying Pagan
- 4:40women. You have increased Israel's
- 4:43guilt. So now confess your sin to the
- 4:46Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do what he demands, Separate
- 4:51yourselves from the people of the land and from these Pagan
- 4:54women. Then the whole assembly raised
- 4:57their voice and answered, yes, you are right, we must do as you
- 5:02say. Then they added, this isn't
- 5:05something that can be done in a day or two, for many of us are
- 5:09involved in this extremely sinful affair.
- 5:12And this is the rainy season, so we cannot stay out here much
- 5:16longer. Let our leaders act on behalf of
- 5:19us all, Let everyone who has a Pagan wife come at a scheduled
- 5:23time, accompanied by the leaders and judges of his city, so that
- 5:27the fierce anger of our God concerning this affair may be
- 5:31turned away from us. Only Jonathan, son of Asahil,
- 5:35and Jazea, son of Tikvah, opposed this course of action
- 5:40and they were supported by Meshalom and Shabbati, the
- 5:43Levite. So this was the plan they
- 5:45followed. Ezra selected leaders to
- 5:48represent their families, designating each of the
- 5:51representatives by name. On December 29th, the leaders
- 5:55sat down to investigate the matter.
- 5:58By March 27th, the first day of the new year, they had finished
- 6:02dealing with all the men who had married Pagan wives.
- 6:06These are the priests who had married Pagan wives from the
- 6:10family of Jesua, son of Jehozadak and his brothers
- 6:14Marseilla, Eliezer, Jarab and get a liar.
- 6:19They vowed to divorce their wives and they each acknowledged
- 6:22their guilt by offering a ram as a guilt offering.

- 9:18men had a Pagan wife and some even had children by these
- 9:22wives. Our Lord, we may not have taken
- 9:34Pagan wives, but we have certainly moved away from You in
- 9:38the way that we have chosen to live.
- 9:41Thank You that even though we have done this, You continue to
- 9:46love us and forgive us. We turn back to You, Lord, and
- 9:52we will sin again today and we will turn back to You.
- 9:55And in many ways that we will sin, We won't even know that we
- 9:58are doing it, but we just thank You that You have given us the
- 10:03gift of Jesus. And that not just once, not just
- 10:07twice, not just three times every day, but in this ongoing
- 10:12way of sanctification, Jesus sacrifice continues again and
- 10:18again to be enough to render us pure and acceptable in your
- 10:24sight. O Father, thank you for giving
- 10:27us Jesus who makes all this possible.
- 10:31And that when you look at us, you see Jesus perfection, and
- 10:36you see us, your children, and you run to us, and you throw
- 10:41your arms around us like the father of the prodigal son.
- 10:45Here we are, your wayward children, and we love you and we
- 10:49are grateful for you. And we pray all of this in the
- 10:53sanctifying, saving name of Jesus.
- 10:56Amen.
