- 0:48SPEAKER_02: And just kind of getting to know what the event is, what it stands for this year's, you know, uh categories.

- 1:27SPEAKER_02: And so yeah, I just wanted to cover it and give you guys a sneak peek into you know what really goes into creating such a wonderful award ceremony and you know how much work goes into it.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I hope you enjoy it and leave some feedback.

- 2:03SPEAKER_02: And so far from what I'm seeing, um, our analytics, you guys are loving the show and I'm so happy to see that.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: But I would really, really appreciate it if you could take a second and just go and write that review for us.

- 2:16SPEAKER_02: And also, while I have you, have you tried Codex yet?
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: If not, you really have to try this brand, you guys.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Codex Beauty Labs, check them out.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: I actually did my first ever uh testimonial for a brand where I showed my own skin and its reaction after just five minutes of using their brand new line, which is called Shunt.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: So definitely check them out.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Um, it's a wonderful line, just very affordable, and it's really great for those of you who have rosacea or just skin that's more prone to inflammation.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: So yeah, check it out, but I'm gonna let you guys get to the show.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I'm so, so delighted to be hosting both of you.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: Hello, thanks for having us.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: It's my pleasure.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: Um, I would love to get started, um, you know, and just talk about, you know, maybe this is to you first, Andrea.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: I would love to talk about CEW, you know, um to start off.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: You know, I would love to know how many years CEW has been hosting the Beauty Creator Awards, um, you know, and you know, what has changed and how how has it grown since then?
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Well, first of all, I just want to maybe introduce CEW.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: And CEW is an international organization.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: We have about 10,000 trend setting members in the beauty industry.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: Um, they have diverse backgrounds.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: We have members who are from multinational brands, indie brands, retailers, fragrance houses, media outlets, and suppliers.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: And CEW, we like we believe in the power of what the beauty industry and its people do.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: So we have as one of our 10-pole events, uh, the CEW Creators Awards.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: And this is a key example of our commitment to really providing insider knowledge of the people behind the brand.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: So this is our 29th year of having the Beauty Creator Awards.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: And what they do is they recognize the best, most creative, and innovative products in Beauty and Beyond, as well as the people behind them.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: The executives who have created these products, they earn as much recognition as the products themselves.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: Wow, that's amazing.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: And I love that you guys are doing this.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: I know CEW is definitely, you know, for me, um, just being new to the beauty industry is definitely a hallmark, you know, in this landscape.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: And it's, you know, it's almost like the stamp of, you know, this is legitimate.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: So I'm very excited to be um to doing this segment.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: And I that that's wonderful.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Um, everything you shared with us.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Now, I wanted to know, uh, Andrea, how many categories are there this year for the awards?
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Are there any new categories?
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: All that yeah, um, well, you know, year over year, the beauty awards and the number of product entries that we have, they grow tremendously year over year.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: We receive more entries every year, as you can imagine.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: Beauty is saturated, there's lots of innovation, and everyone wants to be recognized for all of their hard work.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: Um, this year we have 33 categories, and we have two new categories.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: So the two new ones are sexual wellness and personal care.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Personal care was created because we were receiving so many products that just didn't fit into any of the existing categories.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: So we just had to create personal care.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: We, you know, we kind of struggled with this for a little while because we were like, are they really beauty products?
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: But they are, and they include dental hygiene and deuterines, razors, depillatory creams, hair removal creams, and shaving treatments.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: And then, like I mentioned, sexual wellness is also new.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: We really started to see movement in this category about five years ago.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Now it's substantial.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: Um, and we define these products as those that are used topically on intimate body areas, ingestible and supplements for sexual wellness, and obviously vibrators.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: I love that you guys added those categories.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Those are definitely emerging um brands.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: You know, it's like a it's a huge market nowadays that are it's coming out, you know, with in terms of women's wellness, especially after Roe v.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Wade and like, you know, just people are really kind of speaking up and they're standing up for it.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: So I I love that.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: I love that you guys have that as a category.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Now, um, what is the most popular category, if you don't mind me asking?
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: Well, this year the most popular category was hair care with more than 100 entries.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: And this included hair care treatments and styling products.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: So this doesn't even include shampoos, conditioners, or hair coloring products.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: So hair care was huge then.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: That's interesting.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's really for styling products.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: So um what I know that you know the Beauty Creator Awards has emba what you call ambassadors, right?
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: So what is the role of ambassadors and what exactly is the definition?
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: If you could walk us through that.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Well, um CEW, we spend many months identifying the top brand creators and experts in the beauty industry, like Nunzio, who we have here today.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: These experts, these ambassadors, they serve many purposes.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: First, we leverage their platforms to reach their communities to really spread the word about the beauty creators awards.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: They also provide content to CEW throughout throughout the year to help keep the event top of mind in the form of interviews on trends, product launches, and key consumer insights.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: But most importantly, the ambassadors they vote on all of the product entries.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: We receive more than 1,100 product entries, and so they help us identify the finalists.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: Um, these are the experts in the field, and that's what really sets apart CEW's awards program from others who are voted on by beauty experts and executives, the people who make products.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: Um, of course, we do have three people choice categories, which are voted on by consumers, and that is the launch of the year, influencer of the year, and retailer of the year.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's awesome.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: And you know, this is where I would love to get your feedback, Nunzio.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Um, we, as I mentioned to everyone listening before, we also have Nunzio Saviano here, who is the owner of Nunzio Saviano Salon.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: So um I would love for you to chime in, Nunzio, because I know that you are one of the ambassadors this year.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: And um, especially, you know, being an expert in the hair care area, uh, you know, how do you feel about everything?
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: You know, um, what are you seeing as the biggest trends in hair?
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: You know, uh if you could get us started in that area.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Um if you can repeat the question because we got cut up a little bit.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: It's come it the the reception is really bad for some reason.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: It comes in and out.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: So I missed the question.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Um the question was um, I was just wanted to ask you, you know, how what are you seeing as the biggest trends in hair right now?
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: And you know, how has that changed over the last two years?
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and just you know, in the time that you've been kind of watching the space.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: So uh the biggest trend that I see now with my clients and and in general with the consumers is how much they care for the health of the hair and most importantly, the scalp.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Um even before the pandemic, there was an awareness of the health of the scalp, which contributed to the health of the hair.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and there was this movement, and it was driven because a lot of women were experiencing hair loss more than ever before.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: So they um you know they really understood the the the importance of taking care of your scalp as much as taking care of your hair.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Um so I see the trend as as taking care of your scalp in relation to taking care of your hair, um, it's really as has um has gotten pretty um I say mainstream at this point, um which which before it was really like before trying to convince um the consumer how to either do a scalp scrub or scalp detoxation, um in in in addition to do like a deep conditioning treatment for the hair, that it was all new to them.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: They didn't really understand the concept, they didn't need to understand the need for it, and also the time, you know, it took time to do it.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Um but now I the trend is is really up there with um with everything else, with all the beauty uh uh arrangement that they that women do.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I actually have a follow-up question to that in terms of you know, um, is there I know you mentioned the scalp, but what about ingredients?
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: Are you noticing any specific ingredients coming in to the hair care category that you haven't seen before?
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Of course, because now you know, obviously we all know that um conditioners, shampoos, there is a percentage, high percentage of chemicals, right?
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Some are less, some are more, some are more important than others.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And so there's always been an awareness of that.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: But with something you're putting on your scalp, that it penetrates your scalp, that's a little different.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: So I see that a lot of the products are focusing on more of the natural products.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Um and I and I think the consumers see that, they see how it feels, they see the results.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and of course, nobody really wants to put anything on their scalp um that you know it's it's chemicals, you know.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: They they really want to go more for the for the natural versus natural ingredients versus not.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Um and that includes whether they're drops or uh scalp scrubs.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: So natural ingredients really make a difference.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Now what are um Nuzia, I want to ask you, what are you seeing as the biggest trends in hair, you know, and you know, in terms of like what are the what are the trends that are or in the products that are rising to the top?
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: You know, what what trends are really coming up, you know, to the very top in this category?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Well, as natural ingredients, I see a lot of the hyaluronic, um, which that was something that it it wasn't really uh used before in the hair.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: We obviously was used in the skin, so now it's widely used in the hair, and it's also an ingredient that can go on your scalp, and and um it's a natural ingredient, and so uh that's a very popular one, and it's uh it's actually uh one of the best ones, I think.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Um, and of course, we have you know a lot of the natural oils like argon oil, coconut oil, which have been around for a long time or for the hair, but now we're also seeing for for scalp treatments, also, because they're just naturally their moisturizing and the the benefits with all the vitamins and and minerals that they have.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: Um so it's it's really key important for the for the skin and the hair.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: Well, that makes sense, yeah, because the scalp is skin.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: So that makes a lot of sense, you know, to see the ingredients.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Correct, and it's more complicated than you know, we have a thousand of hair follicles, and so so in addition to taking care of your dermas, your skin, you also need to focus on the health of the follicles.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: So, in for instance, if you're uh if your scalp is you you you also have sebaceous glands on your scalp, and so if you're overproducing the oil, it's not healthy for for the hair.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: If it's underproducing the oil, it's not healthy for the hair.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: So you need ingredients that balance out the the sebaceous glands and how you know how they produce the over over or underproducing the oil, which that's a key one of the key important of healthy hair.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: So all these ingredients really are focused on not only for the health of the skin, but also for the health of your of your of your hair, which is the follicles.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Well, I like that.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: And I really like that we're shifting into that area, you know, especially with um, you know, me personally as a consumer, I can say that, you know, oily hair has been a problem for me, you know, for many, many years.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: And I think I've seen a lot of products lately, you know, that I've I've had brands on the podcast that, you know, they have uh now serums and different kinds of you know products that are geared towards balancing that oil production, balancing that sebum production.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: So I I love that um that's yeah, and I think I think it's so important, so important to treat the the the issue that you have, or try to to, you know, whether it's a standruff or you know, dry dry scalp or oily scalp.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Um it's it's important to treat the the cause, treat the issue than just taking care of, you know.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Of course, we can all use uh uh or you can all use shampoos every day, but that doesn't really take care of the problem.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, yeah, no, I I completely agree.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Now, Andrea, I was wondering if you have anything to add to that or you know if you've noticed the same um the same trends.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: I've noticed the same trends, and even to build on that, I don't know if you've ever used a scalp scrub, but yeah, it's really amazing.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: It's really lovely.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: Um, I think it's something that maybe two years ago I would have said, what do I need to waste my time using a scalp scrub for?
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: Um, I need to just wash my hair and just get on with it.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: But a scalp scrub is really lovely.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: Um, and to build on some of the ingredients, like uh Nunzio was saying, I think using like plant-based or plant cellulose-based exfoliating beads is like a is one of the natural ingredients that uh brands are turning to, um especially uh ingredients that are paraben-free, sulfate-free, dye free.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: Those are the things that consumers are gravitating towards.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: Um, and to also build on um trends that we're seeing outside of hair.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: Um, face sculpting tools are super big as self-care continues.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: They are super popular.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: We saw more than 20 skincare tools enter the beauty awards this year.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: Face sculptures and ice rollers, those were really big.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: Um, I would say makeup, uh, the trends are you just have to have some kind of skincare benefits, some kind of skincare elements, whether it's anti-aging ingredients, moisturizing ingredients, blurring technology, makeup needs to be more than just putting color on your face.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: Um, for me personally, I think what's most important in makeup and skincare right now is SPF.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: Um, we're seeing more and more of that.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: Um, as years go on, 2023, 2024, there's going to be a lot of introductions and a lot of innovation with SPF.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: And now I think brands like Supergoop and Ilya and Cosas, they are really doing a good job with that.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, that makes sense.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: And that's very interesting to see to hear about um the other, you know, the new kind of uh trends and upcoming uh things that are being reflected.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: So this this year in the beauty bazaar, all of these things you mentioned are the these are the newer trends, right?
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Yes, exactly.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: That's what everyone well every at the beauty bazaar, the beauty bazaar, which is happening on September 15th, um, that's an interactive showcase of 2022's most innovative and creative products.
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: They are the finalists that all of our beauty ambassadors voted on from our 1100 product entries.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay, that makes sense.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Now, what I mean, it's interesting to me because you know, this must be like a really hard way to like narrow down.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: So I think you're answering my questions very well.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: It's I know it's like a huge category.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Beauty has become such a large category, you know.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, definitely, definitely very difficult to conduct something like this.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: So, really hats off to your whole team, you know, for putting this together.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Um, I wanted to ask you though, Andrea, um, another question.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: So, what are some fun um activities that are happening tonight?
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: You know, um, if you could kind of dive into that.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, so this is the first time we're doing a beauty bazaar.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: It's our first time we're doing like a real in-person reveal of our finalists.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: So we're very excited about it.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: Um, the bazaar is taking place at the Chelsea Industrial, which is a raw studio space.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: So we had lots and lots of ideas and things to work with.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: Um, we'll be really featuring different kinds of activations and immersive experiences, including, uh, let's see, there's an express hairstyling station from Dyson, CVS's skincare center will be featuring the exclusive Skin Scope.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: There will be temporary tattoos from Inkbox, Body Art from Body Mark, um, Creators Corner.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Um, that is a company that produces high-quality ingredients in smaller quantities for makeup and personal care companies.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: Um, they will be there as well.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: Drunk Elephant, the fabulous skin and hair care brand.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: They'll be offering personalized skincare routines.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: We'll also have an interactive photo moment with JJ and Cheddar News.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: There will be an immersive AR experience with Snapchat.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: And then we have um makeup touch-ups and nail designs and shoulder massages from spot chicks on the go.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: Also, what is really important about the bazaar, not only for people to walk around and see all the finalists and learn about the finalists, but to also vote on the winners at the show.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: So the bazaar will be equipped with QR codes that will route attendees to product information that will help drive votes on site.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: That's wow, that's awesome.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: That's sense.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: That's really, really cool.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, how long does it really take you?
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: I just have a you know random question.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: How long does it really take to put together this award um ceremony every year, Andrea?
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: Like how long it's a year-long, it's a year-long um program.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: We start accepting um product entries at the beginning of the year, and then we have ambassadors, and then we are voting, we're collecting all of the product entries.
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: There's a certain time period where product entries are, and then that ends, and then the ambassadors they vote for the finalists, and then we reveal the finalists, and then there's I think a two or three-week period where people are voting, and then we are going to be announcing the winners in November.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: So, really, it starts in January and ends in November.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: We're having a luncheon on November, I want to say 11th at the Ziegfield Theater, and we'll be announcing all of our winners there.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: I love that, and that's very exciting.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: You know, I for all of the, you know, brand founders that might be tuning in, you know, I wish you all the best of luck.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: And this is so, so exciting.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: You know, CEW is such a hallmark, like I said, in this industry.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: And, you know, I would like to close off the episode by actually um getting some advice from both of you.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: You know, Nunzi, I'd love to start with you and I and ask.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: You, you know, any advice you have for any of the hair, um, you know, hair care uh entrepreneurs out there that are listening in for future years, you know, some things that they should be mindful of when they're crafting their brands and their products.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: If you could offer any uh words of wisdom.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: Um, my my biggest advice is stay as natural as you can.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: I know that products have to have a show life, I understand um you know, fully how important that is in an economical uh perspective, but also for the consumers, consumers are getting smarter and smarter, and consumers also want to go towards a a more of a natural product.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: So the more natural um the product is, uh it's more attractive to the consumer, and the happier the consumer is going to be.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: So that's my biggest advice.
