- 0:00Today on Ground Signal, Houthi drones hit Saudi
- 0:02oil facilities, 73 wounded, Aramco sites burning.
- 0:06Brent crude climbs toward $100. Iran threatens
- 0:09a new Gulf -restricted zone. Hormuz traffic is
- 0:12slowing again. Mistral AI closes a record €3
- 0:15billion raise. Europe's new border system is
- 0:18generating real queues. And in the Forward Signal,
- 0:21CPI Thursday, FOMC next week, and tomorrow's
- 0:24Apple event. Let's get into it. Three things
- 0:27changed since the last briefing. First, Yemen's
- 0:30Houthi forces launched a major strike on Saudi
- 0:32energy infrastructure overnight. Fires broke
- 0:35out at oil facilities in Jizan, Abha, and Najran.
- 0:38At least 73 people were wounded. Saudi officials
- 0:41described it as a dangerous escalation. According
- 0:46to Reuters, Aramco -linked sites were among the
- 0:48targets, and some operations were temporarily
- 0:50halted while damage is still being assessed.
- 0:53Second, Brent Crude is trading around $97 .34
- 0:57this morning, its highest level since July, as
- 1:01traders price in a higher probability of sustained
- 1:03supply disruption. Global equities are lower.
- 1:06The yen is surging. U .S. stock futures opened
- 1:10weaker. Third, Mistral AI, the Paris -based AI
- 1:15company, closed a €3 billion Series D led by
- 1:18Samsung. According to Reuters and confirmed by
- 1:21Mistral, this is the largest equity fundraising
- 1:23ever completed by a European technology company.
- 1:26The round values Mistral at more than 21 billion
- 1:29euros. The Saudi strike is the most consequential
- 1:33development of the past 24 hours, and it has
- 1:36a direct line to your wallet, your energy costs,
- 1:39and the broader risk picture across the Gulf.
- 1:42According to the Associated Press, Houthi forces,
- 1:44the Iran -backed armed group that controls much
- 1:47of northern Yemen, carried out coordinated drone
- 1:49and missile strikes on energy and utility infrastructure
- 1:51and utility infrastructure in Saudi Arabia's
- 1:55southern provinces. The AP confirmed at least
- 1:5873 people were wounded. Reuters reported that
- 2:01fires broke out across multiple Aramco -linked
- 2:03sites and that some production and processing
- 2:06operations were halted pending damage assessment.
- 2:08This is a meaningful escalation. The last major
- 2:12Houthi strike on Saudi infrastructure on anything
- 2:14close to this scale was the 2019 Abqaiq attack,
- 2:17which briefly took out nearly 5 % of global oil
- 2:20supply. This strike hit different sites and appears
- 2:23to be smaller in scale, but the damage is still
- 2:26being assessed. What's clear is the intent. To
- 2:29demonstrate reach into the heart of Saudi energy
- 2:31capacity, the timing matters. Iran has separately
- 2:34warned, according to Reuters, that it plans to
- 2:37announce a new restricted zone in the Gulf in
- 2:39the coming days, an expansion of pressure that
- 2:41layers directly on top of the Hormuz exclusion
- 2:43zone announced last week. The combination of
- 2:47Houthi strikes and Iranian signaling is raising
- 2:49the risk temperature across the entire Gulf region.
- 2:52Signal level for the Saudi strike, signal four.
- 2:55This is immediate tier. It may warrant near -term
- 2:58action if you're exposed to energy prices, travel
- 3:01through the Gulf. or hold positions in oil -sensitive
- 3:03assets. In a separate world signal development,
- 3:06Hungary expelled 10 Russian diplomats today,
- 3:09calling their activities unacceptable. The Hungarian
- 3:11government confirmed it does not consider this
- 3:13a break in diplomatic relations, but Russia said
- 3:16it would respond. According to The Guardian,
- 3:18the move adds another layer of tension to an
- 3:21already complicated European diplomatic map.
- 3:24Signal 1 for now, worth noting, not yet material.
- 3:27The infrastructure picture is inseparable from
- 3:30the world's signal today. Hormuz traffic has
- 3:32slowed again. According to Reuters, shipping
- 3:35through the Strait of Hormuz, the passage through
- 3:37which roughly a fifth of global oil supply moves,
- 3:39has declined since Iran threatened retaliation
- 3:42for recent U .S. military activities in the region.
- 3:45Traders are pricing in a higher risk of prolonged
- 3:48disruption. Iran has now signaled it will formally
- 3:51announce a new restricted zone in the Gulf within
- 3:54days. If that zone is published and enforced,
- 3:57it could materially compress the navigable corridor
- 3:59for tankers, extend transit times, raise insurance
- 4:02premiums, and, in a worse case, trigger temporary
- 4:06rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope. Brent
- 4:09was already elevated before today. It is now
- 4:11trading around $97, and some analysts are publicly
- 4:15pricing in a path toward $100. The September
- 4:187th settlement was $97 .31, according to Market
- 4:22Screener. For listeners with exposure here, this
- 4:26is still a risk elevation story, not yet a disruption
- 4:29-confirmed story. Saudi Aramco has not declared
- 4:31force majeure. Damage assessments are ongoing.
- 4:34But the signal level is 4, something to act on
- 4:37if you have exposure, not something to wait out
- 4:39passively. Markets opened Tuesday weaker across
- 4:42the board. The S &P 500 and Nasdaq closed yesterday
- 4:46at 7 ,718 and 26 ,507, respectively, both down
- 4:52on the session. U .S. futures slipped further
- 4:55this morning. Asian stocks wavered. The yen surged
- 4:58as investors moved towards safe haven assets.
- 5:01Oil is the dominant market story. Brent crude
- 5:04is near $97 .34 as of this morning's early trading,
- 5:08according to Market Screener. That is the highest
- 5:11since late July, driven entirely by the Saudi
- 5:13strike and Iran's Gulf threats. Bitcoin is at
- 5:17around $78 ,621, down about 1 % from the prior
- 5:21close, retreating from the $80 ,000 level it
- 5:24had been testing. Ethereum is around $2 ,483.
- 5:28Crypto is not leading today's risk -off move,
- 5:31but it's also not bucking it. The macro backdrop
- 5:34is what makes this moment particularly sharp.
- 5:37The Fed meets September 15th and 16th, one week
- 5:40from today. The current federal funds rate sits
- 5:43at 3 .5 % to 3 .75%, unchanged since the Fed's
- 5:48July meeting. Inflation remains elevated relative
- 5:51to the Fed's 2 % target. per the Fed's own statement
- 5:54from July 29th. CPI for August is due Thursday,
- 5:57September 11th at 8 .30 a .m. Eastern, confirmed
- 6:00by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That print
- 6:03will either tighten or loosen the FOMC's room
- 6:06to move next week. Oil at $97 complicates the
- 6:10Fed's calculus in a very specific way. If energy
- 6:14prices are pushing headline inflation higher,
- 6:16just as the Fed is deciding whether to hike,
- 6:19the policy path becomes harder to read. The market
- 6:22is watching Thursday's CPI with unusual attention
- 6:24this week. Signal level for money, signal 4,
- 6:27driven by the interplay of oil, FOMC timing,
- 6:30and CPI this week. Two tech developments worth
- 6:33flagging today. The bigger one by market size.
- 6:37Mistral A, I closed a 3 billion euro Series D
- 6:39on September 8th, led by Samsung. According to
- 6:43Reuters and Mistral's own announcement, this
- 6:45is the largest single equity fundraising ever
- 6:48completed by a European technology company. The
- 6:51round values the Paris -based AI Lab at more
- 6:53than 21 billion euros, making it Europe's second
- 6:56-highest -valued private tech group. Mistral's
- 6:59model strategy centers on open -weight models,
- 7:01models whose weights are publicly available,
- 7:03which positions it differently from open AI and
- 7:06Anthropic, who keep their frontier weights proprietary.
- 7:09The Samsung backing adds a hardware dimension.
- 7:11Samsung is the world's largest memory chip manufacturer,
- 7:14and its investment signals a bet that Mistral's
- 7:17open -weight approach could embed into enterprise
- 7:19and device -level deployments. The second story.
- 7:23OpenAI released GPT -6 Astra on September 3rd,
- 7:27and it is the first model the company has designated
- 7:30as reaching the critical level of cybersecurity
- 7:32risk under its internal preparedness framework.
- 7:35According to OpenAI's published safety overview,
- 7:38the launch includes real -time safety monitoring
- 7:40and a mechanism to pause or stop conversations
- 7:43if the system detects a potential instruction
- 7:46misinterpretation risk. Astra is live. But the
- 7:49designation marks the first time OpenAI has shipped
- 7:52a model it publicly classifies as presenting
- 7:54critical -level capability risk. Signal level
- 7:58for tech. Signal 2. If you're traveling to or
- 8:01through Europe, Your border experience changed
- 8:03two days ago, and the effects are showing up
- 8:06at airports now. The European Union's entry -slash
- 8:08-exit system, the EES, replaced the old passport
- 8:11stamp system with biometric registration for
- 8:14non -EU nationals. Flexible implementation measures
- 8:17that were allowing border officers to process
- 8:19travelers without fully running the new system
- 8:21expired on September 6th. According to The Guardian
- 8:24and Euronews, that flexibility is now gone. Major
- 8:27European hubs Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Brussels,
- 8:31Madrid, and Rome are all reporting longer queues
- 8:34as officers work through the new registration
- 8:36process for every non -EU traveler. Airlines
- 8:40and travel groups are publicly calling for the
- 8:42suspension mechanism to be extended through the
- 8:44winter travel season. That extension has not
- 8:46been confirmed. For now, the system is live and
- 8:49running in full. If you're flying into Europe
- 8:52this week or in the coming months, Build in extra
- 8:55time at passport control, especially at busy
- 8:58hubs. Travelers who have already been registered
- 9:00under EES move through faster on repeat entries.
- 9:03First -time registrations take longer. Signal
- 9:06level, signal two, upgrading your planning horizon
- 9:09from now through December. Three things Tenet
- 9:12is watching over the next 24 to 72 hours. Number
- 9:15one, the Apple event, tomorrow, September 9th.
- 9:19Apple has confirmed a special event at 10 a .m.
- 9:21Pacific time. Expected products include the iPhone
- 9:2418 Pro line and, according to credible industry
- 9:27sources cited by MacRumors, possibly Apple's
- 9:30first foldable iPhone. Also expected, Apple Watch
- 9:33Series 12 and Ultra 4. None of these are confirmed.
- 9:37Apple has not officially announced a product
- 9:39lineup. What we're watching, whether the foldable
- 9:42actually ships, and whether Apple makes any AI
- 9:46on -device announcements that would position
- 9:47it more directly against the capabilities Mistral
- 9:50and OpenAI are racing toward. An Apple AI pivot
- 9:54here would be a Signal 3 development. Number
- 9:56two, CPI, Thursday, September 11th. The Bureau
- 10:00of Labor Statistics releases August inflation
- 10:02data at 8 .30 a .m. Eastern. With Brent Crude
- 10:06approaching $97, energy's contribution to headline
- 10:09CPI is the key variable. A hot print gives the
- 10:13Fed more cover to hike next week. A soft print
- 10:15could restrain them even in an elevated oil environment.
- 10:18Either way, Thursday's number is the single most
- 10:21important data point before the FOMC decision
- 10:24on September 16th. Watch the headline number
- 10:26and the core, which strips out food and energy
- 10:29separately. Core tells you whether inflation
- 10:31is structural. Headline tells you what households
- 10:34are actually failing. Number three, the Iranian
- 10:38restricted zone announcement. Iran has said it
- 10:41will formally publish a new restricted zone in
- 10:43the Gulf in the coming days. If that zone is
- 10:46declared and overlaps with Hormuz shipping lanes,
- 10:48it immediately becomes a Signal 5 watch. We're
- 10:51at Signal 4 on Hormuz right now. The formal publication
- 10:54is the next threshold. If it comes, rerouting
- 10:58decisions, insurance triggers, and diplomatic
- 11:00responses from the U .S. and Gulf states would
- 11:02follow quickly. Tenet is watching this closely.
- 11:05That is Ground Signal for Tuesday, September
- 11:078, 2026. Tomorrow, Apple's stage. Thursday, the
- 11:12inflation number. Next week, the Fed. Stay sharp.
