- 0:04You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:06Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:09On this podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:12to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:15what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:18This fall, we're living in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 0:21and John and learning how to live from our model, Jesus.
- 0:25This sermon is part of our series The Gospels.
- 0:28You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:30fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:39We are reading from the book of Matthew, and I will be reading
- 0:43from Matthew Chapter 9. We'll begin with verse 35 and
- 0:48then we'll continue into chapter 10 and we'll read through verse
- 0:5220. It's titled here, The Need for
- 0:55workers. Jesus traveled through all the
- 0:58towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and
- 1:01announcing the good news about the Kingdom, and he healed every
- 1:05kind of disease and illness. When he saw the crowds, he had
- 1:09compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like
- 1:14sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, the
- 1:17harvest is great, but the workers are few.
- 1:21So pray to the Lord who was in charge of the harvest.
- 1:24Ask him to send more workers and to his fields.
- 1:29In chapter 10, Jesus called his 12 disciples together and gave
- 1:32them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind
- 1:35of disease and illness. And here are the names of the 12
- 1:39apostles. First Simon, also called Peter.
- 1:43Then Andrew. Peter's brother James the son of
- 1:46Zebedee. John James's brother Philip.
- 1:50Bartholomew Thomas. Matthew the tax collector.
- 1:54James the son of Alpheus Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot, and
- 1:59Judas Iscariot who later betrayed him.
- 2:03Jesus sent out the 12 apostles with these instructions.
- 2:06Don't go to the Gentiles of the Samaritans, but only to the
- 2:10people of Israel. God's lost sheep going to
- 2:13announce to them that the Kingdom of heaven is near.
- 2:16Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy and cast
- 2:20out demons. Give as freely as you have
- 2:24received. Don't take any money in your
- 2:26money belts, no gold, silver or even copper coins.
- 2:30Don't carry your traveller's bag with a change of clothes and
- 2:34sandals or even a walking stick. Don't hesitate to accept
- 2:38hospitality because those who work deserve to be fed.
- 2:43Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy
- 2:46person and stay in his home until you leave town.
- 2:48And when you enter the home, give it your blessing.
- 2:52If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand.
- 2:56If it is not, take back the blessing.
- 2:59If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your
- 3:02message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.
- 3:07I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah
- 3:10will be better off than such a town on the Judgment Day.
- 3:15Look, I am sending you out a sheep among wolves, so be as
- 3:18shrewd as snakes and harmless as does.
- 3:23But beware, for you will be handed over to the courts and
- 3:26will be flogged with whips and the synagogue.
- 3:29You will stand trial before governors and kings because you
- 3:33are my followers, but this will be your opportunity to tell the
- 3:36rulers and other unbelievers about me.
- 3:39When you are arrested, don't worry about how to respond or
- 3:43what to say. God will give you the right
- 3:46words at the right time, for it is not you who will be speaking,
- 3:51it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you, the
- 3:56Word of God for the people of God this morning.
- 3:58Thanks be to God. Thanks.
- 4:04All right, kids, you are invited to head to children's church.
- 4:09Kids who are up to second grade and there All right, all right,
- 4:21our our favorite children's Bible, the one that we give to
- 4:28each family when they have a baby or a small child baptized
- 4:33is the Jesus Storybook Bible. And in that children's Bible,
- 4:39early in the gospel section, we're introduced to a group of
- 4:44people called the extra super holy people.
- 4:49The extra super holy people, or at least that's what they
- 4:52thought they were, right? This is how the author describes
- 4:56the Pharisees with all their self righteousness, the extra
- 5:01super holy people. And we're not talking about
- 5:05Pharisees today. But I, I think if I'm honest,
- 5:10that's kind of how I grew up thinking about the characters of
- 5:13Scripture, the characters in the stories in the Bible, right?
- 5:17They were the spiritual elites, right?
- 5:21The special forces of the Kingdom of God.
- 5:24They had something that most of us Christians just didn't have.
- 5:28They were the extra super holy people, which ended up meaning
- 5:34that that they made excellent illustrations.
- 5:37Their stories ended up being more like parables that Jesus
- 5:42taught from right. But they they weren't actually
- 5:45examples for us of how we can walk with God.
- 5:53But what if they were? What if that's what God intended
- 5:58them to be? Not exceptions, but examples.
- 6:03What if that's what God meant for us to learn from them when
- 6:07He inspired the writers of Scripture to record their
- 6:11stories? So I want to invite you this
- 6:14morning to hear today's sermon with that question in your mind.
- 6:21What if they were to help us locate where we are in Matthew's
- 6:29Gospel, since there's so much of what we're reading week by week
- 6:34in our reading plan that I can't preach on, right?
- 6:38That's been absolutely the hardest part of this sermon
- 6:43series that we're doing, deciding what not to preach,
- 6:48because there's no way I could hit it all, even though I might
- 6:51do my very best to try to get it all in.
- 6:54So I hope you're reading along through the Gospels with us so
- 6:57you're not missing the other pieces that come along the way.
- 7:02And so for each week, I've been asking Jesus, what do you want
- 7:06us to focus in on this week? Out of these whole seven
- 7:12chapters, where do you want us to focus?
- 7:15Last week's reading concluded with the Sermon on the Mount,
- 7:21the greatest sermon ever preached, which it's it's wild
- 7:26to me that somehow we're, we're doing a whole series on the
- 7:28Gospels and I'm not actually going to preach on the Sermon on
- 7:31the Mount, but that just means we've got another sermon series
- 7:34for another day, right? Anyway, so we we find ourselves
- 7:39coming out of the Sermon on the Mount.
- 7:40We find ourselves in a section of stories in Matthew chapters
- 7:448:00 and 9:00 where we see a series of demonstrations of the
- 7:48Kingdom of heaven. Jesus is showing his followers
- 7:53and and the crowds who are watching from a distance what it
- 7:57looks like when the Kingdom of God comes near.
- 8:03And here's just a little side note.
- 8:05If you if you've noticed, Matthew consistently refers to
- 8:10God's Kingdom as the Kingdom of heaven.
- 8:13Anyone notice that in our reading so far?
- 8:15You don't have to raise your hands.
- 8:17Don't tell me if you haven't, but but Matthew did that for a
- 8:20reason. He did that because the primary
- 8:23audience that he was writing for was people who were coming from
- 8:27a Jewish background. Jewish people didn't say the
- 8:32name of God aloud. They didn't speak it.
- 8:37And so out of a sensitivity to his audience and a a desire for
- 8:41them to hear the message of Jesus, Matthew used the Kingdom
- 8:45of heaven instead of the Kingdom of God.
- 8:49He wasn't compromising the Gospel, he was just translating
- 8:53it into a language that his audience could hear.
- 8:57It's an important principle for us as we seek to communicate the
- 9:01Gospel to the world around us today, because the words we use
- 9:06matter, but they don't matter if they can't even be heard.
- 9:12Anyway, back to Matthew 8:00 and 9:00.
- 9:14That was just my little side note, probably should have ended
- 9:17up on the podcast, but here we are back to Matthew 8:00 and
- 9:209:00. It's worth noting through those
- 9:22two chapters that the primary way we see the nearness of the
- 9:27Kingdom that Jesus was talking about is through healings.
- 9:33There are numerous healings are counted in these two chapters.
- 9:37You could read about a woman who is healed, and a child who was
- 9:41healed, and a servant and a leper and a blind man.
- 9:44All these things. But it's not just healings.
- 9:48Within those same 2 chapters, Jesus also calms a storm.
- 9:54He casts out demons. He even raises a young girl back
- 9:59to life. Jesus is showing us what it
- 10:04looks like when the rule and reign of God intersects with our
- 10:10broken world. What it looks like when the rule
- 10:17and reign of God intersects our broken world.
- 10:23The second-half of our readings this week in chapters 11 and 14
- 10:27that they feature a few miracles, but the focus here
- 10:30shifts to Jesus and his his definition of what the Kingdom
- 10:37of heaven is like, right? There's an emphasis on his
- 10:41teachings, particularly some parable stories that Jesus used
- 10:45to help people understand how the Kingdom of God operates is
- 10:51often held up in sharp contrast to the way the kingdoms of this
- 10:56world operate. And sandwiched between these
- 10:59two, the the healings and and miracles in chapters 8 and 9 and
- 11:04the teaching in Matthew 11 to 14, is our text for today,
- 11:10right? That Carrie read for us, which
- 11:13once again spans across a chapter division, which I think
- 11:17creates a divide in the story that Matthew never intended us
- 11:21to see. I see it just flowing together
- 11:25because at the end of Matthew Chapter 9, Jesus is moving
- 11:28throughout the towns of Galilee. He's teaching and he's preaching
- 11:32about the Kingdom. And Jesus continues to do these
- 11:36works of healing and these miracles and and at some point
- 11:41Jesus sees the crowds that are gathering around him, the crowds
- 11:46that are following him day after day.
- 11:48He sees all those who are sick and oppressed.
- 11:53And I think Jesus heart just filled with compassion.
- 11:57That's what Matthew tells us. His heart was filled with
- 12:00compassion by the state of the people.
- 12:03And so he shared these words with his apprentices.
- 12:08He said the harvest is great, but the workers are a few.
- 12:13So pray to the Lord who's in charge of the harvest.
- 12:17Ask him to send more workers into his field.
- 12:23As a great missionary passage, right often used mission
- 12:28emphasis. Weeks asked the Lord to send out
- 12:31more workers into his fields. But I think in that moment, as
- 12:42Jesus's heart was filled with compassion, seeing the crowds of
- 12:46people coming to him for healing and deliverance, I think Jesus
- 12:50was keenly aware of his human limitations.
- 12:57He felt the Press of the people longing for healing and freedom.
- 13:02He saw the great need that existed in every place that they
- 13:06travelled together. And he experienced the
- 13:09constraints of physical energy, even the the number of hours in
- 13:15a day. And I think Jesus realized in
- 13:20his humanity, in his human limitations, he could never do
- 13:25it all on his own. The constraints of time and
- 13:29space and humanity simply wouldn't allow it.
- 13:34So Jesus explains it to his students, right?
- 13:37There's there's this great harvest that's ready, but there
- 13:42aren't enough workers to bring the harvest into the barn.
- 13:47And so he tells them, pray, pray that the master of the harvest
- 13:52would send out more workers into his fields.
- 13:58I think sometimes we like to stop right there, right?
- 14:03We say, OK, I can, I can pray for that.
- 14:05I can pray that God would send out more workers into his field.
- 14:14Now, I don't know how much time passed between what Jesus said
- 14:19here at the end of Mark Chapter 9 or Matthew Chapter 9 and the
- 14:25beginning of chapter 10. I don't know if it was a few
- 14:27days, few weeks, maybe just a couple of hours.
- 14:33But in Matthew's narrative, no sooner did Jesus tell the
- 14:38disciples to pray for more workers, then he pulls the 12
- 14:43into a huddle around him. And he says, oh, by the way, you
- 14:47are those workers, right? Pray to the Lord to send out
- 14:52more workers. And it's you.
- 14:56You're the ones he's going to send out.
- 14:58And so he gives them authority, and he sends them out to do the
- 15:03very same work that he himself had been doing.
- 15:09As these 12 are sent out, Jesus gives them both authority and
- 15:14instructions. He tells them to proclaim to the
- 15:19people of Israel that the Kingdom of heaven, the Kingdom
- 15:22of God, that is right, It has come near to them, the Kingdom
- 15:27that they have been waiting for, which they associated with
- 15:31freedom from foreign oppression, the restoration of the nation of
- 15:35Israel, the blessing of God. The reign of God had come near
- 15:40to them, but as Jesus had been teaching, it was going to look
- 15:46different than they were expecting.
- 15:50He gives them those instructions, but He also gives
- 15:54them authority to show what it means when the Kingdom of God
- 16:00breaks in upon our world. And so he instructs them to heal
- 16:05the sick and raise the dead, to cleanse the lepers and cast out
- 16:11the demons. All the things that Jesus
- 16:14himself had been doing in the chapters leading up to this.
- 16:20This is why Jesus had called them to be his apprentices in
- 16:24the 1st place. Mark three.
- 16:28I know we're not into Mark yet, but Mark 3 tells us that when
- 16:32Jesus selected the 12 apostles, he did so for a purpose.
- 16:37He said then he appointed the 12 of them and called them his
- 16:40apostles. They were to accompany him, and
- 16:45he would send them out to preach, giving them authority to
- 16:49cast out demons. Jesus called them first and
- 16:55foremost to be with him, to be with him, to become like him,
- 17:06and then to do what he was doing.
- 17:10And both Matthew and Mark make it clear that the authority that
- 17:14they were given comes from Jesus, right?
- 17:18It's not an authority that existed within them themselves.
- 17:22It came from Jesus and it was imparted to them via the time
- 17:27they spent being with Jesus. They weren't to.
- 17:33They weren't just to follow Jesus and learn all about Him.
- 17:39Jesus was actually preparing them to be the very workers that
- 17:43God would send out into those harvest fields.
- 17:49Now, there were a whole lot of other instructions given.
- 17:51We only read about half of that chapter.
- 17:54It went on. But Jesus gave these
- 17:58instructions to the apostles. Which apostle just means the
- 18:02sent ones, right? These are the ones he's sending
- 18:05out. So he gives these instructions
- 18:07to to these apostles, instructions about how they were
- 18:10to enter into a town, what their ministry there was to look like.
- 18:15He said, don't take any money with you.
- 18:17Stay in people's homes if they'll receive you.
- 18:20How they were to respond when they were arrested.
- 18:24You know, everyday evangelism stuff, right?
- 18:31But at the core of all that Jesus was telling them was this
- 18:37command, this authority to proclaim the good news that the
- 18:45Kingdom of heaven had come to earth and to demonstrate what
- 18:50that meant for our broken world. Healing the sick, raising the
- 18:55dead, cleansing the lepers, and delivering those who were
- 19:00demonized. This was the call of Jesus's
- 19:04disciples, the very purpose for which he had called them to
- 19:08himself and was now sending them out.
- 19:15And I can hear some of your thoughts even now.
- 19:20Well, Pastor Scott, they those people, they were the 12
- 19:25apostles. They were the extra super holy
- 19:30people. We could never do those things.
- 19:35We could never operate with that kind of authority or Commission
- 19:40from Jesus. To which I would argue that it
- 19:43was not just the 12 apostles. Turn over to Luke chapter 10
- 19:50with me, if you would. If you have your Bibles out,
- 19:54it's going to be up on the screen anyway.
- 19:56But in Luke chapter 10. Luke is telling a similar story
- 20:02to the one that we read today from Matthew and and before you
- 20:07say, well this must just be a different version of the same
- 20:11event. If you turn back a page just to
- 20:14to Chapter 9, Luke also records the sending out of the 12.
- 20:20So this is different. This is a separate subsequent
- 20:23story that Luke is telling, and here's what he says in Luke
- 20:28chapter 10, beginning in verse one.
- 20:30The Lord now chose 72 other disciples and sent them ahead in
- 20:37pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit.
- 20:41These were his instructions to them.
- 20:44The harvest is great, but the workers are few.
- 20:48So pray to the Lord who's in charge of the harvest.
- 20:50Ask him to send more workers into his fields.
- 20:54Sound familiar? Now go remember that I'm sending
- 20:58you out as lambs among wolves. Don't take any money with you,
- 21:02nor a traveler's bag, nor an extra pair of sandals.
- 21:05And don't stop to greet anyone on the road.
- 21:07Whenever you enter someone's home, first say, May God's peace
- 21:11be on this house. If those who live there are
- 21:13peaceful, the blessing will stand.
- 21:14If they are not, the blessing will return to you.
- 21:18Don't move around from home to home.
- 21:20Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide.
- 21:22Don't hesitate to accept hospitality because those who
- 21:26deserve their pay. If you enter a town and it
- 21:29welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you heal the sick and
- 21:33tell them the Kingdom of God is near you now.
- 21:41Sounds familiar, right? There's there's a lot of
- 21:44similarity to what Matthew records, which maybe it's just
- 21:50that they got parts of the story in different places.
- 21:53Maybe. There's definitely a close
- 21:57connection between these two passages and the the part in
- 22:00Mark or Luke Chapter 9. But the thing that stands out to
- 22:05me in Luke's story is the way he says that Jesus sends out the 72
- 22:13other disciples, other disciples.
- 22:18These weren't the 12 apostles, but they were sent out in the
- 22:23same way. We aren't given the names of any
- 22:30of these 72 disciples that Jesus sent out, but they were sent out
- 22:35with the same authority to proclaim the Kingdom of God and
- 22:39to demonstrate it to the people. And that says to me that that
- 22:44this sending out with authority, it isn't just for the ones who
- 22:48we would consider the spiritual elites.
- 22:53It's for every Christian. It's not just for the apostles.
- 22:57It's also for the nameless, anonymous Christians whose names
- 23:00were never written down in the words that became scripture.
- 23:03The ones who were doing their best to follow Jesus, the
- 23:07Christians who were like, just like you and me.
- 23:15And I think today Jesus wants us to be with him too, so that he
- 23:23can send us out. Back in Matthew, Jesus told
- 23:29them, give as freely as you have received.
- 23:36And I wonder if the reason that it seems impossible for us to be
- 23:41used in these kinds of ways that we're reading about in the
- 23:44Gospels is simply because this isn't the gospel, the good news
- 23:52that we ourselves have received. You see, friends, I think too
- 23:58often we've settled for a lesser gospel.
- 24:03We've settled for a gospel that saves us from hell, but it's a
- 24:07gospel that leaves us stuck where we are.
- 24:11It's a gospel that doesn't require consecration or
- 24:14transformation or or the demonstration of the good news
- 24:17that the Kingdom of God has come near to us in the midst of our
- 24:21broken world. It's a gospel where we're saved,
- 24:26but we're doomed to struggle for the rest of our lives, doing our
- 24:30best, but with an implicit acknowledgement that God
- 24:35couldn't work through us the way he worked through those in
- 24:39Scripture. Now I don't know what this is
- 24:45supposed to look like, but I wonder what Jesus could do if we
- 24:54committed ourselves to being with him, learning who he is,
- 25:01what his Kingdom is like, getting to know his heart, and
- 25:10if through being with Him we became like Him.
- 25:14If we started living like he lived, developing an intimacy
- 25:19with God through the spiritual practices that have been handed
- 25:22down to us, Could we live like him, empowered by the Spirit to
- 25:28exercise the spiritual gifts that God has given to us?
- 25:34I wonder what Jesus could do if we'd if we would consecrate
- 25:40ourselves, setting ourselves apart as different from the
- 25:46world, and giving ourselves wholly to Jesus, allowing him to
- 25:52transform us so the Spirit could empower us to bring the Kingdom
- 25:57into our spheres of influence. I wonder what it would look like
- 26:05if we believed Jesus's words from John 20, 21 as the Father
- 26:12has sent me, so I am sending you or from Luke 10 verse 19 after
- 26:21the 72 had returned from their ministry and come back to Jesus
- 26:25and he said I've given you authority over all the power of
- 26:30the enemy. Would we experience what the 72
- 26:36described when they returned to Jesus?
- 26:39Luke says this is verse 17. He says when the 72 disciples
- 26:44returned, they joyfully reported to him.
- 26:46Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name when we do
- 26:52ministry as you've taught us to do the ministry.
- 26:57I don't know what it would look like today in Collingswood in
- 27:072025. I'd love to find out because I
- 27:14think Jesus still calls us to himself so he can make us like
- 27:19him, so he can send us out to bring his Kingdom, the rule and
- 27:24reign of God, into a world that is very evidently still quite
- 27:29broken. This morning you might be
- 27:33sitting there thinking, Scott, you're crazy.
- 27:36That's too much. It's too much.
- 27:40I get it. It's where I was for a long
- 27:44time. I thought those are nice stories
- 27:46to inspire us, but God doesn't work like that anymore.
- 27:54Somewhere along the way I realized, you know what God, God
- 27:59doesn't change. He's the same yesterday, today,
- 28:04and forever. So if if God's not working the
- 28:07same way today, maybe it's not God who changed.
- 28:15Maybe it's us. Maybe it's his church that's
- 28:20changed. So this morning, if Jesus is
- 28:29speaking to your heart, you don't have to know all the
- 28:34details of what it means for you.
- 28:37I'd imagine most of those 12 and 72, they didn't know what it was
- 28:43going to mean for them. But if you sense that he's
- 28:47calling you to himself in a deeper way than you've
- 28:53experienced, or he's asking for a deeper commitment from you,
- 28:58right? That's what we call
- 29:00consecration, a deeper commitment.
- 29:04Or, or maybe you sense that Jesus wants to send you out into
- 29:10the world, maybe to a certain person, to a group of people,
- 29:14that that God wants to give you authority and empower you to
- 29:19share the good news that you've received.
- 29:24Or maybe you just want to experience the fullness of the
- 29:27good news. But the Kingdom of God has come
- 29:30near to us. If Jesus is speaking to you this
- 29:38morning, don't miss it. I want to invite you to come
- 29:44forward as as as we close in prayer and we're going to sing a
- 29:49song called I speak Jesus. But I want to encourage you.
- 29:54You guys can come. I want to encourage you respond
- 30:00to His call and let Him take care of the rest.
- 30:07Take Him at His word because it's not about us making
- 30:13something happen. It's about giving ourselves to
- 30:16Jesus so He can transform us and He can send us out to carry His
- 30:22Kingdom into the world. Would you pray with me?
- 30:28And if Jesus is speaking to you, you come.
- 30:33God, we're so grateful for your word and for this collection of
- 30:40writings that was written over hundreds and hundreds of years.
- 30:46For the stories that are recounted within it of the ways
- 30:49you used men and women down through history.
- 30:56Be the very hands and feet of Jesus in the world.
- 31:03Stories of, of the way you've spoken to people that have led
- 31:07them to speak to the people or to act, to serve, to go.
- 31:13God, we thank you for the call that comes to us to be with you,
- 31:19to come close to you, to get to know you and your heart so that
- 31:23we can become like you and you can send us out to do the things
- 31:30you did. God, it seems like too much
- 31:36sometimes. It seems impossible when we
- 31:40think about ourselves, but that's only when we think about
- 31:44ourselves in our human strength, God, because with you nothing is
- 31:49impossible. So would you come and speak to
- 31:54our hearts this morning? Would you lay people and groups
- 32:03and and ministries on our hearts that you want us to move
- 32:07forward, move out into, for the sake of what you want to do to
- 32:11bring your Kingdom in the world today?
- 32:14We desperately need you Jesus, in these days.
- 32:21And if you would ever choose to move, to act through people like
- 32:26us, we want to be willing to say yes to whatever you would ask of
- 32:33us. So would you come and speak to
- 32:36us in this time? We pray it all in your name,
- 32:40Jesus, Amen.
