Latest / Outspoken the Podcast / TMG: Dom Calarco's Viral First Birthday Speech
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to the Mums Group you actually want
- 0:05Speaker 1: to be a part of. I'm Sophie Torber and I'm
- 0:08Speaker 1: joined by my sisters and journalists Kate and Amy. Now
- 0:11Speaker 1: on today's show we're delving into the drama surrounding former
- 0:14Speaker 1: maths contestant.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Dom Calarco's daughter's first birthday.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Plus we'll be talking about Taye Lautner's viral comments about
- 0:21Speaker 1: pregnancy body image.
- 0:23Speaker 2: But first, we have to catch up. How's everyone's week been?
- 0:26Speaker 1: I actually feel like I'm on holidays at the moment
- 0:28Speaker 1: because my husband has just started a new job and
- 0:30Speaker 1: he used to work in events.
- 0:32Speaker 2: So he would work full time plus event hours.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And now he's working four days a week. The office
- 0:37Speaker 1: is closer. He's around so much more.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And it is just.
- 0:41Speaker 1: so nice, particularly because we're starting to get this nice
- 0:44Speaker 1: spring weather, you know, when your whole mood is just boosted.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Oh, you know, you guys always say I'm Mrs.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Negative, but I feel like as soon as the weather
- 0:51Speaker 1: switched over, I've been so happy about life. Like, I
- 0:54Speaker 1: think it also coincides with Luca being so much more
- 0:57Speaker 1: interactive now. Like, I feel like I'm hanging out with
- 0:59Speaker 1: my best friend every day and it's just so much fun.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Sophie's iron infusion also seems to have kicked in. You're
- 1:04Speaker 1: getting a bit more positive.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Like, have you noticed though? I feel like I've been
- 1:08Speaker 1: a lot nicer. Even my husband said yesterday, he's like, gee,
- 1:11Speaker 1: you're in a good mood. He's like, what's that about?
- 1:13Speaker 1: I said, oh, I can be a bitch if you
- 1:14Speaker 1: want me to. Yeah, you realize you're actually a nice person,
- 1:17Speaker 1: but you were just completely lacking any iron in your body.
- 1:20Speaker 1: No wonder. Well, I'm currently in the stage where my
- 1:23Speaker 1: son Harry has decided not to call my husband dad
- 1:27Speaker 1: or daddy anymore. He's now just calling him Dale, which
- 1:31Speaker 1: is rather hilarious when we have the baby monitor on
- 1:33Speaker 1: and in the morning he's like, Dale, Dale.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And I said, well, to Dale, he wants you, you
- 1:39Speaker 2: better go. He's been pretty clear about that. I love
- 1:42Speaker 2: hearing him say Dale.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And I think he's actually been egged on by my son, Jack,
- 1:46Speaker 1: because he's always like, Uncle Dale, Uncle Dale.
- 1:48Speaker 2: And I feel like Harry just copies everything Jack does
- 1:51Speaker 2: at the moment.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I thought Dale would be upset about it because previously
- 1:55Speaker 1: he's spoken about.
- 1:56Speaker 2: How much he loves hearing him say daddy.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But Dale, I feel like he's playing up on it now.
- 2:01Speaker 2: He's been encouraging him to say Dale.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And I'm like, Dale, it sounds like you're like my
- 2:06Speaker 1: second husband and you're not his father and we've had
- 2:09Speaker 1: to be like, oh, then this is Dale. See, I
- 2:12Speaker 1: actually think that he's saying it because you say Dale
- 2:15Speaker 1: all the time, Amy, because you'll always be on the
- 2:18Speaker 1: phone like, Dale did this or Dale said that or
- 2:21Speaker 1: when's Dale home? I saw a TikTok the other day
- 2:24Speaker 1: and it was a toddler who'd been calling their dad
- 2:26Speaker 1: babe because that's what the mum always refers to him as.
- 2:29Speaker 2: So it could be worse.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I actually saw that too and I've made such an
- 2:32Speaker 1: effort to make sure I call Reece dad in front
- 2:34Speaker 1: of Jack. I call Brandon Smeg so I'm going to
- 2:37Speaker 1: have to be really mindful of that because it's a
- 2:39Speaker 1: really weird nickname that is like.
- 2:41Speaker 2: A personal joke. What is it, a kettle or a toaster?
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, like I said it very innocently because we were laughing.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm watching a vlog and we were laughing about I
- 2:49Speaker 1: think it was one of Talia Skane's vlogs when she
- 2:51Speaker 1: was still with Mitch third and we were laughing about
- 2:53Speaker 1: all the smeg appliances so I don't know why I
- 2:56Speaker 1: called him smeg just as a joke and it stuck
- 2:58Speaker 1: but he's like do you realize it sounds like you're
- 3:00Speaker 1: calling me.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Smeg I don't want to get him that's so good
- 3:02Speaker 2: as a.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Girl I literally didn't even think of that as this
- 3:05Speaker 1: is a mum's group podcast I feel like let's not
- 3:07Speaker 1: even mention that word it's so repulsive I feel like
- 3:09Speaker 1: we're kind of going into the doting dads category because
- 3:12Speaker 1: when I sometimes tune into their podcast, I realize it
- 3:15Speaker 1: is not for.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Mums at all. Did you say Matty J was voted
- 3:18Speaker 2: father of the year?
- 3:19Speaker 1: I was like, well, I mean, this is no disrespect
- 3:21Speaker 1: to Matty J, but I think the reason why was
- 3:24Speaker 1: because he has a parenting podcast. I'm like, well, where's
- 3:26Speaker 1: our award for mothers of the year? How low is
- 3:29Speaker 1: the bar though for dads?
- 3:30Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 3:31Speaker 1: Like, oh, wow, this father has a parenting podcast. So
- 3:34Speaker 1: he deserves to be father of the year.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Did you have to nominate yourself though?
- 3:38Speaker 1: I mean, I think Matt's a really good dad. Like
- 3:40Speaker 1: from everything I've seen, he seems like a really lovely father.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I think he even joked about it. I saw some
- 3:46Speaker 1: TikTok of him on one of the morning shows. I
- 3:48Speaker 1: can understand why the charity would have selected him from
- 3:51Speaker 1: a PR perspective, because obviously it's a great way to
- 3:55Speaker 1: draw attention to the charity because I've seen him be
- 3:57Speaker 1: interviewed everywhere about this award on morning shows and in newspapers.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But it is an interesting choice considering when you look
- 4:05Speaker 1: at other fathers who have won these sorts of awards.
- 4:08Speaker 2: In the past.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm kind of confused what the selection criteria was
- 4:12Speaker 1: because there was a number of other awards. For example,
- 4:16Speaker 1: there was Community Father of the Year, which was won
- 4:18Speaker 1: by a man called Will Austin. And that was for
- 4:21Speaker 1: his amazing work helping Indigenous men combat mental health issues.
- 4:24Speaker 1: But when you read Matt's rundown, it only mentions the
- 4:28Speaker 1: fact that he's got three daughters and he was raised
- 4:29Speaker 1: by a single mum. And I'm like, Like that poor
- 4:32Speaker 1: man having to have three daughters in the house. I mean,
- 4:35Speaker 1: maybe our dad should have won Australian Father of the
- 4:37Speaker 1: Year for having triplet daughters. Look, the charity said it's
- 4:40Speaker 1: because he sparks important conversations about the roles fathers play
- 4:43Speaker 1: in their children's lives. Well, is this reminding me of
- 4:45Speaker 1: that rhetoric around whenever you think you're a bad mum,
- 4:48Speaker 1: just reframe it that you're an amazing dad?
- 4:50Speaker 2: I want to thank the woman.
- 4:53Speaker 3: That got up every single day, even when she was
- 4:56Speaker 3: exhausted and scared and overwhelmed. I know a lot of
- 4:58Speaker 3: mums understand that feeling.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Dom Calarco has gone viral after calling out her ex
- 5:03Speaker 1: for missing their daughter's first birthday. The former maths contestant
- 5:07Speaker 1: expressed her disappointment to her TikTok followers days out from
- 5:11Speaker 1: the important milestone.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Let's take a listen.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Father of my child decided to be a groomsman for
- 5:18Speaker 3: a friend rather than spend the day with his daughter
- 5:22Speaker 3: on her first birthday.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Now, it didn't take long for the video to completely
- 5:26Speaker 1: blow up. It hit over 1 million views thanks to
- 5:29Speaker 1: a debate in the comment section about co-parenting. Now, while
- 5:33Speaker 1: there was a small portion siding with Dom, the overwhelming
- 5:36Speaker 1: consensus was that Dom was in the wrong. Some labelled
- 5:40Speaker 1: her toxic and controlling, while others said her request was ridiculous.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm guessing that's why she ended up deleting the video. Now,
- 5:47Speaker 1: before we get into our own thoughts on Dom's comments,
- 5:50Speaker 1: I think in order to fairly discuss this story, we
- 5:52Speaker 1: need to get listeners up to speed with Dom's relationship
- 5:56Speaker 1: background as it provides further context. So Dom and her ex, Jared,
- 6:00Speaker 1: they were together for about a year before they split.
- 6:03Speaker 1: They actually broke up when Dom was just 10 weeks
- 6:06Speaker 1: pregnant with her daughter Dove.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I mean, how awful.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And at the time she told her followers that she
- 6:11Speaker 1: would be entering motherhood as a solo parent, but would
- 6:14Speaker 1: have Jared's support in a co-parenting capacity. Jared backed this
- 6:18Speaker 1: sentiment up saying that his daughter was his number one
- 6:20Speaker 1: priority and he was committed to co-parenting.
- 6:23Speaker 2: So it seemed like things are pretty cordial between the pair.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Jared was at the birth and he was also photographed
- 6:29Speaker 1: alongside Dom at Dove's baptism. That was all until Dom
- 6:33Speaker 1: recently hit out saying that she had effectively been solo
- 6:36Speaker 1: parenting from the beginning, despite technically having a co-parent. She
- 6:41Speaker 1: also spoke about navigating the newborn nights by herself with
- 6:44Speaker 1: no support. Then came this viral call out. A lot
- 6:47Speaker 1: of Dom's videos have been popping up in my For
- 6:50Speaker 1: You page because I obviously get a lot of mum
- 6:52Speaker 1: talk stuff. And I feel like there's been a lot
- 6:56Speaker 1: of tension between her and the ex before this video.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Like if you're an avid viewer of Dom.
- 7:02Speaker 1: you can kind of tell that it seems like she's
- 7:04Speaker 1: having to do a lot for her baby. Oh, well, understandably,
- 7:07Speaker 1: because she is looking after her daughter full time whilst
- 7:10Speaker 1: also trying to juggle her career as a content creator. Now,
- 7:15Speaker 1: what has added an extra layer to this story is
- 7:18Speaker 1: the fact that Jared was actually present on the morning
- 7:20Speaker 1: of his daughter's first birthday, as well as at her
- 7:23Speaker 1: birthday party the following day. Now, the reason that we
- 7:26Speaker 1: know this is because Dom vlogged both events for her
- 7:29Speaker 1: followers and And these videos were like red rags to
- 7:32Speaker 1: a bull. Immediately people hit out saying her expectations were ridiculous.
- 7:37Speaker 1: One person wrote, he was there in the morning, but
- 7:39Speaker 1: you expected him to spend the entire day with both
- 7:42Speaker 1: of you. Another said, you're not together. Sadly, the idea
- 7:45Speaker 1: of perfect co-parenting rarely works out. He did the right
- 7:49Speaker 1: thing by being there and then going to the wedding
- 7:51Speaker 1: of someone who was obviously also important to him. It's
- 7:54Speaker 1: interesting to reflect on what you would do if you
- 7:57Speaker 1: were in the same situation, because I think a bridesmaid
- 8:00Speaker 1: role at a wedding is very different to a groomsman
- 8:03Speaker 1: because if you're a bridesmaid, you have to be there
- 8:06Speaker 1: the whole day. Like you're in hair and makeup at
- 8:08Speaker 1: like 7am. So he legitimately could have spent the morning
- 8:11Speaker 1: with his daughter and probably early afternoon and then gone
- 8:14Speaker 1: to the wedding later on.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Do you know what pisses me off about this whole thing?
- 8:17Speaker 1: Like everyone's sitting here and being like, oh, he was
- 8:20Speaker 1: there in the morning and what do you expect? And
- 8:22Speaker 1: it's like, but it's always just assumed that as the
- 8:25Speaker 1: default parent, that Dom's going to be there for the
- 8:27Speaker 1: whole day. It's like, I'm sure that she planned the
- 8:30Speaker 1: whole birthday party. I mean, I think what she's more
- 8:33Speaker 1: mad about is not the day itself. It's what it
- 8:36Speaker 1: symbolizes because it sounds like Jared has been quite absent
- 8:40Speaker 1: for all of the difficult parts in the first year
- 8:42Speaker 1: of his daughter's life. As she touched on, she's been
- 8:44Speaker 1: there for all of the overnight feeds with no help.
- 8:47Speaker 1: She's been there, Ashim, for all of the teething, all
- 8:50Speaker 1: of the difficult things. And he couldn't even be there
- 8:54Speaker 1: for the full day of her birthday, which is one
- 8:56Speaker 1: of the highlights. Yeah, and I get on the outside,
- 8:59Speaker 1: it might seem like, oh, how terrible that you can't
- 9:01Speaker 1: even let this guy go to a wedding.
- 9:04Speaker 2: A wedding is obviously a very important event.
- 9:05Speaker 1: But it's like when you are the default parent, it's
- 9:08Speaker 1: like you have to ask all the time, can I
- 9:11Speaker 1: do this?
- 9:12Speaker 2: Can I do that? And it's like in this. Can
- 9:14Speaker 2: I have a shower? Yeah, can I have a shower?
- 9:15Speaker 2: And Dom has sacrificed everything. So much.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So I can see why she would be pissed off.
- 9:20Speaker 1: It's just another slap in the face that he can't
- 9:22Speaker 1: even clear his day to be there for his daughter's birthday. Yeah,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I get all of that, but publicly calling him out
- 9:27Speaker 1: on the internet, I don't think that was the right
- 9:29Speaker 1: thing to do. And also you've got to understand they're
- 9:32Speaker 1: not together anymore. So would you want to spend all
- 9:35Speaker 1: day and all night with your ex and their family?
- 9:38Speaker 1: But it's not about spending the whole day with your
- 9:40Speaker 1: ex and your family. It's about spending the whole day
- 9:42Speaker 1: with your daughter.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And maybe he could have taken her out and given
- 9:45Speaker 1: Dom a break, like taking her to his parents. I
- 9:47Speaker 1: want to know if he paid for half of the
- 9:49Speaker 1: birthday party as well, because it can get quite expensive.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Well, it looked like quite a party. It didn't look
- 9:53Speaker 2: like any expense was spared.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And it is such a huge moment, I think, for
- 9:57Speaker 1: the mum, the first birthday, because it's a real milestone.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Like you have survived the newborn trenches. Yeah, I think
- 10:05Speaker 1: a lot of mums can relate to that feeling of
- 10:06Speaker 1: desperately wanting some acknowledgement for the sacrifices that they've made
- 10:10Speaker 1: during particularly the first year of motherhood. I know firsthand
- 10:13Speaker 1: that one year milestone does funny things to people. We've
- 10:16Speaker 1: spoken about the pressure of Dad's having to deliver this
- 10:20Speaker 1: perfect first birthday speech at the party to thank mums adequately.
- 10:25Speaker 1: And after watching Dom's TikToks leading into her daughter's birthday,
- 10:28Speaker 1: it was very obvious she was desperate for that type
- 10:31Speaker 1: of acknowledgement. Also, you know, people are saying, oh, he
- 10:35Speaker 1: did rock up. Well, maybe he only rocked up after
- 10:37Speaker 1: she called his shit out online. And I feel like
- 10:40Speaker 1: her taking this issue to TikTok was almost.
- 10:43Speaker 2: A bit of a cry for help.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I understand from his side, though, he didn't have control
- 10:47Speaker 1: over the wedding date. I mean, these things are set
- 10:49Speaker 1: well in advance. And when you are obviously best friends
- 10:53Speaker 1: with the groom, it would be hard to say, I
- 10:56Speaker 1: can't attend. The thing is, I think a lot of
- 10:59Speaker 1: people assumed when she put that first video out that
- 11:01Speaker 1: he wasn't seeing his daughter at all, that he had
- 11:03Speaker 1: chosen the wedding over her. And I think the fact
- 11:06Speaker 1: that he actually was there the morning of the birthday
- 11:09Speaker 1: and They woke the daughter up together and, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 1: enjoyed cake together. He seemed to be there a quite
- 11:15Speaker 1: big chunk of the day and then was at the
- 11:16Speaker 1: birthday party. I think sometimes you've got to remember that
- 11:19Speaker 1: life happens as well. And if you have an important
- 11:22Speaker 1: event on and the baby's not going to remember if
- 11:25Speaker 1: you were actually there, you know, maybe we should cut
- 11:28Speaker 1: him a little.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Bit of slack.
- 11:29Speaker 1: It's funny, Kate, because you touched on before how momentous
- 11:32Speaker 1: the first birthday party speech is. And Dom's speech has
- 11:36Speaker 1: actually gone viral. At the time of recording, it's been
- 11:39Speaker 1: viewed 600,000 times. And the reason it went viral is
- 11:43Speaker 1: because it was basically a speech thanking herself. Now, this
- 11:47Speaker 1: was the speech that she clearly wanted her ex to
- 11:49Speaker 1: do about her.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Let's take a listen.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I want to thank the woman that got up every
- 11:54Speaker 3: single day, even when she was exhausted and scared and overwhelmed.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I know a lot of mums understand that feeling. I'm
- 12:00Speaker 3: proud of the mother that I've become and I'm allowed
- 12:02Speaker 3: to say that. I think we all need to say
- 12:04Speaker 3: it more. Being Dub's mum has taught me that I'm
- 12:07Speaker 3: stronger than I ever wanted to have to be, but
- 12:10Speaker 3: also softer than I knew I could ever be. This
- 12:13Speaker 3: year has shown me that motherhood isn't just made up
- 12:15Speaker 3: of the beautiful moments that we capture, and we capture
- 12:18Speaker 3: a lot, right? It's also in the exhaustion, the sacrifice
- 12:23Speaker 3: and the worry and the choice to keep showing up
- 12:26Speaker 3: with love every single day. Sometimes it's literally pure survival
- 12:31Speaker 3: and Dove has been the light that's guided me through.
- 12:34Speaker 3: You have been the greatest love of my life, Dove,
- 12:37Speaker 3: my biggest friend.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Everything I've done this year.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Has been with one goal, to give you a life
- 12:42Speaker 3: where you will always know how deeply you are loved.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Happy birthday, my baby girl.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Thank you for making me your mum.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Look, I don't know what's wrong with me, but just
- 12:54Speaker 1: hearing that, I felt really emotional and really proud of her.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Because I know some people will think, oh, that's egotistical
- 13:00Speaker 1: to stand up and, you know, blow your own trumpet
- 13:02Speaker 1: and say how great you've been. But someone needed to.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Her daughter is going to grow up to realize how
- 13:07Speaker 1: strong her mum is, particularly when she watches this speech back.
- 13:10Speaker 2: See, I thought the complete opposite. I actually cringed when
- 13:14Speaker 2: I watched it.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I was like, are you actually going to say anything
- 13:16Speaker 1: nice about your child?
- 13:17Speaker 2: It was just like very me, me, me. But Kate,
- 13:19Speaker 2: the first birthday is about the parents. Let's be real.
- 13:21Speaker 2: The first birthday is about the fact that you've survived.
- 13:23Speaker 2: And do you know what's.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Annoying is that traditionally when there are any big events,
- 13:27Speaker 1: like think about your wedding. Most of the time, the
- 13:30Speaker 1: bride doesn't say anything and the mother of the bride
- 13:33Speaker 1: doesn't say anything. And then at the birthday parties, the
- 13:35Speaker 1: mother rarely says anything. It's the husband that says something.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I actually like this. I wish I'd done a fucking
- 13:41Speaker 1: speech at Harry's first birthday and said how great I
- 13:44Speaker 1: was because You know.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Like it was, it's not like she's like, I'm fantastic.
- 13:48Speaker 1: She was actually going through the sacrifices she has made
- 13:51Speaker 1: and she's said, how important her daughter is to her.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know if it was something
- 13:56Speaker 2: to do with the delivery. It personally rubbed me up
- 13:59Speaker 2: the wrong way.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And I hate to say that because I do agree
- 14:02Speaker 1: that I think mums should give themselves a pat on
- 14:04Speaker 1: the back, but maybe it's just because it was so
- 14:07Speaker 1: unusual to hear and it's usually delivered by someone else.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Maybe because it was on TikTok, I reckon, because it
- 14:13Speaker 1: was posted to TikTok. Like if you were at that event,
- 14:15Speaker 1: you might've gone, oh my God, that's like go Dom.
- 14:18Speaker 1: But Kate, you're saying that she didn't say anything about
- 14:20Speaker 1: her daughter. She said that her daughter was the greatest
- 14:22Speaker 1: love of her life and that everything she has done
- 14:25Speaker 1: and sacrificed this year has been with the one goal
- 14:28Speaker 1: to give her daughter the life that she deserves and
- 14:30Speaker 1: to know that she's loved.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I think she actually said quite a lot about her
- 14:33Speaker 2: daughter in that speech. There was a lot of me, me, me.
- 14:36Speaker 2: That was my take on it.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And I don't know if maybe I was swayed by
- 14:39Speaker 1: the comments because I had a look at them, but
- 14:41Speaker 1: it just came across as me, me, me. I'm the
- 14:44Speaker 1: center of this day. Like the majority of comments were like,
- 14:47Speaker 1: are you serious? One person wrote, I've never heard anyone
- 14:50Speaker 1: make a speech thanking themselves for being a parent before.
- 14:52Speaker 1: That comment got 8,000 likes. Another said, is this Dove's
- 14:56Speaker 1: birthday or Dom's day? Now that comment got 3.6 thousand likes.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Dom actually replied saying both of our days. She's right.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And someone else said, my mom is like this. It's exhausting.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I don't talk to her anymore. I just think that
- 15:08Speaker 2: that's so harsh.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Clearly Dom has gone through a very difficult year and
- 15:12Speaker 1: this is her one opportunity to get up in front
- 15:14Speaker 1: of her friends and family who love her and to
- 15:17Speaker 1: say how proud she is of herself.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And maybe more mums need to actually do this because
- 15:23Speaker 1: mums notoriously put themselves last.
- 15:26Speaker 2: And here's an example of Dom going, do you know what?
- 15:28Speaker 1: I'm actually going to give myself the kudos for how
- 15:31Speaker 1: hard I've worked this year and everyone's like.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Oh, you're so fucking selfish.
- 15:34Speaker 1: But also maybe it was an opportunity for as a
- 15:37Speaker 1: bit of a call for help for more people to
- 15:39Speaker 1: get on board in her life and assist her. Well,
- 15:41Speaker 1: since getting all the negative feedback online, she was interviewed
- 15:44Speaker 1: about it and she said, them saying that I was
- 15:46Speaker 1: making it all about me, it's just like, excuse my language,
- 15:49Speaker 1: but fuck you. I'm going to pat myself on the
- 15:51Speaker 1: back because at the end of the day, no one
- 15:53Speaker 1: else was going to do that. Dove's dad wasn't going
- 15:55Speaker 1: to stand there and say, thanks to Dominica for 12
- 15:58Speaker 1: months of raising a beautiful child.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Just as I was reading that, I had the light
- 16:01Speaker 2: bulb moment.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I think it didn't sit well with me because it
- 16:04Speaker 1: seemed a bit passive aggressive as if it was aimed
- 16:06Speaker 1: at at her ex, it was like, well, this is
- 16:08Speaker 1: the things that you should be saying about me, but
- 16:10Speaker 1: I have to say them about myself. And off the
- 16:12Speaker 1: back of that other video, that makes me like it more.
- 16:15Speaker 1: It seems like the speech was a whole fuck you.
- 16:17Speaker 1: And to say, hey, you can stand here and listen
- 16:19Speaker 1: to everything that I've done and sacrificed over the past
- 16:21Speaker 1: 12 months. Well, so if you're going to like this
- 16:23Speaker 1: next update from Dom, considering you are team her, So
- 16:26Speaker 1: despite the internet siding with Jared, she threw further shade
- 16:31Speaker 1: at him by jumping on that Netflix doco trend. So
- 16:34Speaker 1: she put up a video with the caption, preparing for
- 16:36Speaker 1: my Netflix interview about going through a breakup, 10 weeks pregnant,
- 16:40Speaker 1: giving birth, weighing 46 kilos, baby daddy not buying flowers
- 16:43Speaker 1: after I gave birth, co-parenting, Taking up knitting to cure
- 16:47Speaker 1: my sadness.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Oh, again, iconic from her. I love that.
- 16:51Speaker 1: You can see that it was a real point of
- 16:53Speaker 1: contention for the last year because when Dom was vlogging
- 16:58Speaker 1: her daughter's birthday, she showed her mum and grandma rocking
- 17:01Speaker 1: up with a bunch of flowers for Dom and presenting
- 17:03Speaker 1: them to her. So clearly it meant a lot to her.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I feel like sending her a bunch of flowers myself.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I mean, sorry, your partner, even if it's your ex-partner,
- 17:11Speaker 1: has just given birth to your child and you can't
- 17:13Speaker 1: bring a bunch of flowers, like pop into the Woolies
- 17:15Speaker 1: if you must.
- 17:17Speaker 4: I'm kind of like on a mission to talk about
- 17:19Speaker 4: this more.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Tayne Lautner has opened up about her struggles with body
- 17:23Speaker 1: image and negative self-talk whilst pregnant. The mum-to-be who's expecting
- 17:27Speaker 1: her first child with husband Taylor Lautner told the Call
- 17:30Speaker 1: Her Daddy podcast that she's learning to be kinder to herself.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I don't think I'm ever going to get over the
- 17:35Speaker 1: fact that they're both called Taylor. Like I know we've
- 17:37Speaker 1: already discussed this on the podcast before, but what are
- 17:40Speaker 1: the odds of them calling the kid Taylor?
- 17:41Speaker 2: Well, they touched on that in this interview.
- 17:43Speaker 1: She said that if they don't call their baby Taylor,
- 17:46Speaker 1: everyone's going to be so disappointed. And she said, look,
- 17:49Speaker 1: it's actually on the, like, it's not off the table
- 17:52Speaker 1: that they could, but she was, I think she was bullshitting.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Like they're not going to call the baby. That is cruel.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:57Speaker 1: I really loved this interview with Tay because I felt
- 18:01Speaker 1: like so many women could relate to what she had
- 18:03Speaker 1: to say because she spoke a lot about what a
- 18:06Speaker 1: shock it was to actually become pregnant because she said
- 18:09Speaker 1: she'd seen such an unrealistic portrayal of it online and
- 18:13Speaker 1: that when she became pregnant, she was like, wait a sec,
- 18:15Speaker 1: I'm meant to be glowing, but I feel the worst
- 18:17Speaker 1: I ever have. Oh, I can relate to that. She
- 18:20Speaker 1: must have different algorithms because I feel like a lot
- 18:22Speaker 1: of people.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Actually do open up about that.
- 18:25Speaker 1: That was one of the things that made me so
- 18:27Speaker 1: fearful about becoming pregnant. I had seen so much HG
- 18:30Speaker 1: content that I was convinced that I was going to
- 18:32Speaker 1: have it myself. No, but everyone does talk about this
- 18:34Speaker 1: beautiful pregnancy glow that you get. And I suppose you
- 18:37Speaker 1: look more womanly. I feel like my skin broke out
- 18:40Speaker 1: from memory. I can't actually remember because I feel like
- 18:42Speaker 1: I've sort of blanked that whole experience out.
- 18:45Speaker 2: She spoke a lot as well about weight gain.
- 18:47Speaker 1: So she said that basically she has this phobia of
- 18:52Speaker 1: throwing up. So anytime she felt nauseous, she would eat.
- 18:55Speaker 1: So she gained a lot of weight early on in
- 18:58Speaker 1: her pregnancy. And she recounted this moment that she was
- 19:01Speaker 1: about to get in the shower and she saw herself
- 19:03Speaker 1: nude in the mirror and she just broke down in tears.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Let's have a listen to what she said.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Every time I was not just, I would eat. And
- 19:10Speaker 4: so I gained like 12 to 15 pounds in like
- 19:12Speaker 4: three weeks maybe. And so nothing fit so early on.
- 19:17Speaker 2: I mean, I cried.
- 19:17Speaker 4: I was like literally standing naked in front of the mirror.
- 19:20Speaker 4: I think I was like about to get in the
- 19:21Speaker 4: shower and Taylor was in the bathroom with me. And
- 19:24Speaker 4: I literally just like started crying. So you just don't
- 19:26Speaker 4: recognize yourself. I was talking about laying out at the lake.
- 19:30Speaker 4: I said something along the lines of like, I'm just
- 19:32Speaker 4: going to be a big pregnant lady laying out there.
- 19:33Speaker 4: And he goes, no, you're just a pregnant lady. And
- 19:36Speaker 4: I was like, Oh, that's really nice. I was like,
- 19:39Speaker 4: I need to talk to myself that way more. I
- 19:41Speaker 4: think that's honestly the biggest thing. And that's something I
- 19:43Speaker 4: keep trying to tell myself. And every time I don't,
- 19:45Speaker 4: I just like smack myself on the wrist. But when
- 19:47Speaker 4: I see other pregnant women, I've actually never thought. like
- 19:50Speaker 4: a pregnant woman was fat. I've never been like, look
- 19:52Speaker 4: at her arms, look at the cellulite. Like I've never
- 19:54Speaker 4: thought that. And that's all I see in myself. I'm
- 19:57Speaker 4: really trying to like rework the mindset.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I could not relate to this more.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I thought when I was pregnant that I was going
- 20:03Speaker 1: to be one of those people that wore like the
- 20:05Speaker 1: bodycon dresses. I was like, oh, finally I'd feel comfortable
- 20:08Speaker 1: in one of those figure hugging outfits. But I spent
- 20:10Speaker 1: most of my pregnancy in oversized jumpers and tracky pants.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I mean, it's kind of how I dress now anyway,
- 20:16Speaker 1: but I really didn't want to show my bump off
- 20:20Speaker 1: at all. And so for you were renowned for talking
- 20:22Speaker 1: about your B belly that apparently.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Wasn't the right shape.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Look, I mean, in saying that, I think, I don't
- 20:28Speaker 1: want to say I was lucky. But my son was
- 20:31Speaker 1: quite small, so I really didn't show until later in
- 20:35Speaker 1: my pregnancy. Whereas it was quite interesting because I think
- 20:38Speaker 1: for both of you, you showed a lot earlier than me.
- 20:40Speaker 1: And it was difficult for Amy and I because we
- 20:42Speaker 1: were only nine weeks apart. And for you, you probably
- 20:46Speaker 1: felt a bit funny that I wasn't really showing. And
- 20:48Speaker 1: I felt funny because I had that internal worry, like,
- 20:51Speaker 1: shouldn't I look bigger than this? Yeah, I remember feeling
- 20:53Speaker 1: really uncomfortable as well to be seen by Dale. I
- 20:56Speaker 1: was like, I just don't feel like myself.
- 20:59Speaker 2: You just don't feel attracted to you.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and Alex Cooper was talking about that, how she
- 21:02Speaker 1: was getting changed in her bedroom and her husband walked
- 21:05Speaker 1: in while she's pregnant.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And she was like, please leave the room, leave the room.
- 21:09Speaker 2: And he's like, Alex. I am your husband. I have
- 21:12Speaker 2: seen you. And she's like, I don't want you to
- 21:13Speaker 2: see me like this.
- 21:14Speaker 1: My gosh, my husband had the same conversation with me,
- 21:17Speaker 1: but there's something so vulnerable about it because you're not
- 21:19Speaker 1: even used to it. Like it doesn't even look like
- 21:20Speaker 1: your own body anymore. I felt really awkward in the
- 21:24Speaker 1: first stages of my pregnancy when I didn't really have
- 21:26Speaker 1: the bump, but I was really bloated. And you couldn't
- 21:29Speaker 1: obviously explain to anyone that it was because you were pregnant.
- 21:32Speaker 1: And when I was 10 weeks pregnant, we went on
- 21:34Speaker 1: our honeymoon to Port Douglas and you know, before when
- 21:37Speaker 1: I was planning my honeymoon, I was thinking, oh, I'm
- 21:39Speaker 1: going to get really fit and I'm going to wear
- 21:41Speaker 1: these bathers and blah, blah, blah. Anyway, I literally wore
- 21:44Speaker 1: a one piece the whole time because I just felt
- 21:46Speaker 1: so embarrassed of how bloated I looked. Well, it was
- 21:50Speaker 1: really interesting because Tay was saying that it took her
- 21:53Speaker 1: ages to actually verbalize how she was feeling because she
- 21:56Speaker 1: felt this immense pressure of not wanting to seem ungrateful
- 22:00Speaker 1: because obviously a lot of couples are have trouble conceiving.
- 22:04Speaker 1: And she thought if she went on her socials and
- 22:05Speaker 1: spoke about this, it would seem really ungrateful. And I've
- 22:08Speaker 1: heard other creators talking about this too, about, I don't
- 22:12Speaker 1: want to seem to be complaining, but then how can
- 22:15Speaker 1: I not open up about this when.
- 22:17Speaker 2: It's making me feel so terrible? I don't reckon this
- 22:19Speaker 2: was a thing for other generations.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I think this is a thing now where it's like,
- 22:22Speaker 1: you always have to be aware of the fact that
- 22:25Speaker 1: you're lucky and telling everyone that you're lucky. Even though
- 22:28Speaker 1: you're going through one of the most life-changing and difficult
- 22:31Speaker 1: experiences of your life, and it's obviously nice that people
- 22:34Speaker 1: are thinking of others and trying to have perspective, but
- 22:37Speaker 1: at the end of the day, you should be able
- 22:38Speaker 1: to sit in your feelings and feel them. Do you
- 22:40Speaker 1: think this feeling that a lot of us have when
- 22:42Speaker 1: we're pregnant has anything to do with the fact that
- 22:45Speaker 1: pregnancy is now kind of like the new fashion accessory?
- 22:48Speaker 2: Like so many influencers.
- 22:49Speaker 1: And celebrities show off their perfect bumps and they kind
- 22:53Speaker 1: of curate their whole wardrobe around them being pregnant. And
- 22:56Speaker 1: for a lot of us, that might not be something
- 22:59Speaker 1: we're comfortable doing, or we might may compare ourselves and
- 23:02Speaker 1: feel like, oh, well, my stomach doesn't look like that.
- 23:04Speaker 2: That's so true.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I saw this Instagram and it was basically listing off
- 23:10Speaker 1: all of Rachel Green from Friends' best looks while she
- 23:14Speaker 1: was pregnant and saying that she was ahead of her
- 23:16Speaker 1: time because she had her.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Bump out in the 90s or the early 2000s.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And someone in the comments pointed out, yeah, she looked
- 23:24Speaker 1: good because she wasn't actually pregnant and.
- 23:26Speaker 2: She had a prosthetic stomach on. It's a character. And
- 23:29Speaker 2: it's so true.
- 23:31Speaker 1: In order to be fashionable as a pregnant woman, you
- 23:33Speaker 1: literally have to apparently look like you're not pregnant with
- 23:36Speaker 1: the perfect little belly that pokes out of all of
- 23:38Speaker 1: your very curated outfits.
- 23:41Speaker 2: And also you have to be glowing.
- 23:42Speaker 1: That is something that we're told that when you're pregnant,
- 23:44Speaker 1: you're absolutely glowing and you're looking so happy.
- 23:46Speaker 2: But that's really not a reality for most people. I mean,
- 23:49Speaker 2: most of us are.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Having all of our vital minerals and everything sucked out
- 23:54Speaker 1: of us and given to the baby. And the thought
- 23:57Speaker 1: of it being a priority to curate some pregnancy wardrobe,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you know, when you're actually just trying to get through
- 24:03Speaker 1: the day is wild to me. Well, Alex Cooper was
- 24:06Speaker 1: also talking about how the minute you fall pregnant, it's
- 24:10Speaker 1: just all that consumes you.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And I remember feeling that too. Like it's, She said,
- 24:14Speaker 2: everything is in turmoil.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Like in your head, you're constantly thinking, oh my God,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I'm this many weeks pregnant. And then your body is changing.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And she said, it's the most indescribable thing. She was
- 24:25Speaker 1: talking about how she used to see pregnant women on
- 24:28Speaker 1: the street and think, oh, that's nice. And now she
- 24:31Speaker 1: sees them and she's like, I respect the hell out
- 24:33Speaker 1: of you and what your body is going through. Do
- 24:35Speaker 1: you know what's so funny though, is a switch from
- 24:38Speaker 1: being pregnant to not being pregnant? Because I think being
- 24:41Speaker 1: pregnant is the last time that you can be really
- 24:44Speaker 1: selfish and everything is about you. It's like, well, sorry,
- 24:46Speaker 1: I say that your first pregnancy. It's like, how are
- 24:49Speaker 1: you feeling?
- 24:51Speaker 2: We need to look after you. You need to sit down.
- 24:53Speaker 2: What are your pregnancy cravings?
- 24:54Speaker 1: And as soon as that baby's born, you instantly click
- 24:57Speaker 1: out of it and it's like, oh, my God, I
- 24:58Speaker 1: need to keep this child alive. And so I sort
- 25:00Speaker 1: of wish during my pregnancy that I focused more on
- 25:03Speaker 1: what was to come so I wasn't so shell-shocked. There's
- 25:06Speaker 1: also a bit of a relief when it's not about
- 25:08Speaker 1: you because– it is one of the only times in
- 25:11Speaker 1: your life where it seems like your body is absolutely
- 25:13Speaker 1: up for conversation. Like people, like random people in the
- 25:16Speaker 1: street will come up and comment on, you know, whether
- 25:19Speaker 1: you've got a big bump or a small bump or
- 25:22Speaker 1: what you look like if you look too pregnant or
- 25:25Speaker 1: not pregnant enough. Well, I think what rocks you more
- 25:27Speaker 1: though is your body image postpartum. I think that's even
- 25:31Speaker 1: more fucked because suddenly you don't have this bump and
- 25:35Speaker 1: it's like, hold on, you're supposed to look like you
- 25:37Speaker 1: were never, ever, ever pregnant at all straight away when
- 25:39Speaker 1: you've got no time to work on yourself.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Just back to this.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Interview with Tay, it was quite funny because she was
- 25:45Speaker 1: talking about how her pregnancy hormones had really ramped up
- 25:49Speaker 1: and she was detailing this argument that she had had
- 25:52Speaker 1: with her husband, Taylor, and I was like, right, I
- 25:54Speaker 1: am all ready to listen to this.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Like this is going to be super. Where's the popcorn? Yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 2: this is going to be super juicy.
- 26:00Speaker 1: But this is the big fight that she detailed.
- 26:03Speaker 4: We were leaving my OB's office and I hadn't had
- 26:05Speaker 4: enough food, I think was partially the problem.
- 26:08Speaker 2: And he's just like, so sweet.
- 26:10Speaker 4: He drops me off and I run in and like
- 26:12Speaker 4: grab the food. And then I run back out to
- 26:14Speaker 4: the car because it's a busy street.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Don't worry, everyone.
- 26:16Speaker 4: He would get, he would be getting the food if
- 26:19Speaker 4: it wasn't a busy street. So I run in and
- 26:21Speaker 4: grab it. And then I run back out and the
- 26:22Speaker 4: door is locked and he rolls the window down. And
- 26:24Speaker 4: I'm like standing there trying to open the door. And
- 26:26Speaker 4: he's like, you're going to need to grab utensils.
- 26:27Speaker 2: I was like, I did.
- 26:29Speaker 4: And I was like, we got in the car and
- 26:30Speaker 4: I was like, oh my gosh. And he was like,
- 26:33Speaker 4: for the rest of the ride i'm your chauffeur we're
- 26:34Speaker 4: not gonna talk in five minutes go by i was
- 26:36Speaker 4: like i'm sorry wait also i love that that's your
- 26:39Speaker 4: version of snapping at him i did no i like
- 26:43Speaker 4: i'm not i'm like so i'm the most you guys
- 26:46Speaker 4: taylor and i have never like been in an argue
- 26:47Speaker 4: like we don't like i'm just like let's just like
- 26:50Speaker 4: talk through things it takes.
- 26:51Speaker 2: A lot to piss me off you gave him the
- 26:52Speaker 2: demon eyes.
- 26:53Speaker 4: I know i did he in it like i think
- 26:55Speaker 4: like he was like i am your uber today he
- 26:57Speaker 4: made a shocked.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Face I mean, potentially this is a very watered-down version
- 27:01Speaker 1: of the incident that actually took place. I mean, was
- 27:04Speaker 1: it a bit like Steph Clare Smith's takeaway incident where
- 27:07Speaker 1: she threw tacos on the floor of their car? No,
- 27:09Speaker 1: this was honestly their fight. Like these two appear to
- 27:13Speaker 1: have this picture-perfect relationship. I loved when Alex was like, wait,
- 27:16Speaker 1: that was like the fight?
- 27:18Speaker 2: Like this is not a fight.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Is that because there's a bit of an imbalance in
- 27:21Speaker 1: power because, you know, he's this big– movie star and
- 27:25Speaker 1: she was a nurse before they met, wasn't she?
- 27:27Speaker 2: Like a normie.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:28Speaker 2: You think she's too scared to have an argument with him?
- 27:30Speaker 2: Surely that would play into your relationship. I mean, this fight.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Not when you're married.
- 27:34Speaker 1: But this fight of theirs, this was me being nice
- 27:38Speaker 1: on a day when I was pregnant.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Like me being like.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Look, wait for the postpartum rage to settle in and
- 27:44Speaker 1: I'm sure she will reflect and say, oh, that was
- 27:46Speaker 1: just some pleasantries that we exchanged. I just loved that
- 27:49Speaker 1: Taylor Lord was like on the car ride home. I'm
- 27:51Speaker 1: not going to speak to you until we get home
- 27:53Speaker 1: or something. It's like, oh, my God, she barely said
- 27:56Speaker 1: anything to you. Maybe it was the tone. Yeah, surely
- 27:58Speaker 1: there was some tone. You've got to remember this was
- 28:00Speaker 1: Tay retelling a story. I would have retold stories when
- 28:04Speaker 1: I was in the midst of my pregnancy rage that
- 28:06Speaker 1: probably weren't quite accurate as well. No.
- 28:09Speaker 2: No, we've all been there.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Well, I think that's all we've got time for today.
