• 0:00
Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 70 for Friday, September 4th, 2015.
• 0:06
[gentle music] Yes, tonight, all night, yeah, it's the Weekly Dose of Fat radio hour with the Right Reverend Sven Hammer and Uncle Gomez.
• 0:28
Aloha, amigos. Welcome, brethren. That dulcet-toned voice introducing the show and joining us all night was none other than Mr. JK Livin. Welcome, good sir. Testify, my brothers.
• 0:42
[laughs] Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by Surly and the Corporation for Fat Bike Broadcasting.
• 0:50
Did you know that three out of four dentists recommend Surly bikes to their patients that ride bikes? Good dental hygiene starts and ends with fun, freedom, and the buttery smooth ride of a quality steel bicycle.
• 1:04
Learn more about bikes and modern dentistry at surlybikes.com. All right, all right, all right. So JK, what's happening on the show this week?
• 1:14
We'll be taking call-in guests all show long to ask the question, do you ride with music? If so, earbuds, Bluetooth gizmo? And we'll probably ask you what your favorite ride song is.
• 1:26
This week's special guest is Andy Skoglund from Surly, who reveal next week's call-in question. We'll talk fat bike and plus bike news in the Fatty Farm Field Report.
• 1:37
And as always, we got fat and plus size news from the internet. Plus size. Hey. Hey. That brings us to the top of the hill boys. Top of the hill. Cheers, Harry. [can opening] Eco Fina Botella.
• 1:54
[laughs] You tested out the new ATM bag. It can hold five beers in a, in a blazing 90-degree late summer day. Yeah. Kept them ice cold for an hour. Pretty good hour, yeah. Way to go, Andy. Yeah.
• 2:11
Way to build in that, uh- Six would have fit- Yeah... but you, you sometimes have to- So it-... have a travel one... does it have a, does it have an insulating layer? It seems like it does. Cool.
• 2:19
I mean, the outside definitely has that kinda cooler- Yeah, yeah... uh, rip- Cordura style... Cord- yeah, rip stop somethin', somethin'. Yeah. There's all type of high-tech fabrics. Yeah, yeah.
• 2:32
But you just keep it all closed up. Like they use in, uh, you know, the wolf cameras- Keep it all cold... and, uh- They just keep it all cold together [laughs]... finsulate.
• 2:40
So, uh, while we're waiting for our special guest this week, Mr. Andy Skoglund, why don't we take a quick break? I, I need a break. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
• 2:57
[crowd cheering] Hey, welcome back to [laughs] the show. Uh, while we're waiting for Andy to call, maybe we could just, uh, answer the question of the week ourselves. Oh, good idea.
• 3:08
Like, uh, do you ride with music, and if so, do you ride with earbuds or some Bluetooth gizmo? Do you want me to go first? And more importantly, what's your favorite ride song? [laughs] I got this all figured out.
• 3:20
I just got a new, I had a Boombotix and it just died. The switch broke, so I bought a Boombotix Mini, and that's what I use. And, uh, I'm gonna go with a Daft Punk song from last summer.
• 3:33
I forget the name, but y'all know it. It's, like, a big, big alt hit. Because, uh, when that song comes on, I dance on the pedals. [laughs] Just like, who dances? Phil Liggett. Phil Liggett. Phil Liggett dancing.
• 3:49
He's dancing. He's dancing on the pedals. All right. JK, you gotta, gotta chime in on the, with earbuds, with Bluetooth. No, not at all? Oh, it's Bluetooth. I,
• 4:02
I pretty much always have something playing, and it's, and I- I've noticed. I ride with you often enough to notice that [laughs]...
• 4:06
I go with a lot of, like, [laughs] almost disposable Bluetooths at times, but right now I'm- Dime store speakers. Yeah, pretty much. [laughs] It's like, "Hey, I'm at Walmart," and they go, "Give me that."
• 4:17
You know, it's got a shelf life of a couple months, and well, you- Of rocking good tunes... whatever. Yeah. So right now it's a Boombot Rex. Which, uh, they last- It works really well... they go for a while. Yeah. Yeah.
• 4:28
That's, that's the one that I... That lasted two and a half years probably for me. Mine lasted until I lost it, and then I found it, and now you got it [laughs] Yeah. Nice. Um- And the ride song? Yeah.
• 4:40
Uh, Sleep Stope Smoker. Yeah. Good one. 'Cause it's an hour and three minutes- Yeah... total drone. Yeah. It- It's a good one. It, it, it, it definitely keeps your attention for an hour. Yeah, yeah.
• 4:51
I, yeah, I've done a couple rides where that's, like, been the only thing on the whole beach ride. Yeah. Just [laughs] it's really awesome. [laughs] It's like this whole thing- Nice... is fueled by this song.
• 5:00
[laughs] Nice. Yeah. That's fun. Yeah. Well, I, I'm a, i- if I'm listening to music, which I don't always, uh, I use a, like a Boombotix. I have a Pro now that seems pretty good. And the one- Boombotix Pro, man...
• 5:13
the thing I started using it for even more than listening to music is actually answering the phone. Yeah. And people are like, "Nah, I can't tell you're riding your bike." You know?
• 5:21
It's like, okay, well except for the [panting] [laughs] Other than that, no, there's no, like, wind noise coming through it or anything, or not n- discernible. Wow. So yeah, I use the Boombotix if I'm...
• 5:33
And usually I use that around town. Uh, out on the trails I don't listen to music very much. Really? I like the solitary silence. I like to, I like to have music on almost all the time. All right.
• 5:44
And I'm gonna, I'm gonna beg out of the song. I have a bunch of playlists, but, uh, I think we'll [laughs] take a call real quick. Welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line?
• 6:00
It's the Phantom Menace. Oh, there we go. Hey, Dave, what's up [laughs] Now Mark, what's up with you? Just trying to bring you into the show by turning the little knobby dealy up- [laughs]... so that we could hear you.
• 6:11
Dave loves. I'll, I'll, I'll- Just fiddling with knobs right over here [laughs]... fiddling with knobs right now. Uh, what's happening? Oh, I, oh, I called at the right time, I guess.
• 6:20
[laughs] Well, we're waiting for a call from Andy. He's gonna call in from, uh, Surly here at some point, so we'll take his call when he sh- comes around, but what do you got? Hey- Oh, okay...
• 6:31
the question of the week, Dave... yeah, I was instructed to call in by Mr. Gomez, so just following orders. Yeah.
• 6:37
[laughs] The, the question of the week is, do you ride with music, and if so, do you use earbuds or do you use a Bluetooth speaker? And if, uh, if so, what's your favorite radio...
• 6:46
no, what's your favorite song to ride to? Color My World by the Chicago- Um, I don't ride with music. Um, there's enough shit going on in my head when I ride, I don't need any other distractions. [laughs] All right.
• 6:58
I can attest to that. Um- [laughs] But I do remember, uh, one year during Rootless 24 singing Breadfan by Metallica multiple times over and over in my head for the course of 24 hours. Well, very good.
• 7:12
Um, other than that, whatever, you know, pops into my head, and then whatever I have to beat it out with, with said heavy metal songs, you know, shit like that, you know. Right on. Well, uh- Yeah...
• 7:22
Dave, Andy's- I would like to thank you for-... giving us a shout here. Can you wanna hang out? Okay. Um, we got Andy calling in, so we're gonna get him going here. Do you wanna hang out or give us a shout back?
• 7:32
Oh, I'll call you back in a little bit. Right on. Bye Dave. Bye Dave. Bye. Please welcome to the radio program Surly product enginerd, Congressman Andrew Skoglund. All right. All right. [laughs] Later, fella.
• 7:46
Hey, a lot of people don't know this, but Andy is also a Sith Lord of the dark side of the force. How you doing, Andy? I'm good. I'm good. You guys aren't supposed to give that away, but I'm great. Glad to be here.
• 8:00
It's hard to say Sith Lord. Sith [laughs] Sith Lord. Part of the training. Yeah. [laughs] We've invited Andy to come on the radio program to answer all of your questions about the new Wednesday from Surly.
• 8:16
Yeah, Andy used his dark side's incredible power to design the Wednesday for Surly. What was going through your mind? Andy, tell us how voodoo and the dark side influenced the design of the new Wednesday.
• 8:29
Uh, the dark side, you know, I didn't really have to use too much of it for it. Um- Just a pinch... we [laughs] not yet, anyways.
• 8:39
Um, we, at Surly, we wanted a bike that, um, we could have a little bit cheaper MSRP, that people could buy into a little bit cheaper, and we wanted a bike that was a little bit between some of the bikes that we made.
• 8:51
Uh, we both, and everyone loves the Ice Cream Truck here. Everybody loves Pugsley, but they do very different things, and they're both very feature rich.
• 9:00
Um, we were thinking maybe with everything that we'd learned over the years, we could apply all those little nuggets in our pockets to the frame design and, uh, wrap it up into a 1,500 r-
• 9:11
um, bike, and that's what we did. Right on. Cool. So you wanna share some of those feature nuggets with our listeners?
• 9:19
So, uh, it starts with, um, we wanted to do, uh, you know, we break it up into threshold four and five-inch bikes, but basically, it's, uh, spacing and BB shell width.
• 9:32
So we wanted to see how big of a bike, how big of a tire we could get with 100 mil BB shell threaded- Mm-hmm... and with a 177, uh, centered rear end.
• 9:41
Um, those hubs are way more available now than they were when the Pug was designed. Oh, yeah. Um, yeah. And, you know, mounting racks and doing all those things, and they look a little bit different than an offset bike.
• 9:53
Some people like an offset, some people don't.
• 9:55
So, um, we had the ICT, we had the Pug, and I was like, "Man, I really like a more mountain bike handling fat bike that isn't 132 press fit and 197 space," 'cause it's a big, heavy, really stiff bike. Mm-hmm.
• 10:09
Um- [laughs]... so we looked into it, and so that's what we're looking at, is we're looking at back to 100 mil BB shell threaded. Um, we got a 4.6 or so tire clearance,
• 10:21
and depending on the rim and tire, I mean, that's, it's such a gray subjective realm of what tire fits and what doesn't fit. Oh, yeah, for sure. You know, most things labeled 4.6 are gonna fit.
• 10:30
Um, some bigger stuff might fit, but it's gonna be tight, and we'll, we'll just say 4.6. Um, the design- What's it coming with for, uh, what's it coming with for rim width stock? 80 mil. 80.
• 10:41
[laughs] So it comes with our 80 mil, uh, my other brother Darryl tubeless compatible rim, which we are gonna come out with a pin version for OEM, which is what the Wednesday comes with, and then which is centered only lacing.
• 10:56
Actually, that's centered or offset- Right... lacing. Sorry. Um, and then we're gonna have a welded aftermarket version that's gonna be either centered or offset.
• 11:05
Um, so they have a little bit different cutout patterns, too, depending on where the, the spoke nipple holes are, too. So that's the rim that's coming out, and that's a big deal, too.
• 11:14
Um, we'll probably get into that a little bit, but that tubeless rim takes a bunch of weight off the wheels. Even with the tubes in, they're, they're about 200 grams lighter than a Darryl. They're- Nice. Awesome. Cool...
• 11:25
uh, awesome. Really stiff, really strong, too. Um- So-... so then-... this, this bike can, can run just about any drivetrain as well.
• 11:33
Now with the 170 roll off, it can run a interlink geared, and it actually has, uh, all the cable hangers for that, as well as regular de-regu- derailleur systems, or the track dropouts allow you to single speed this.
• 11:50
So it's super versatile. That's right. Yep.
• 11:53
Yeah, so we, you know, we have MDS chips on, on some other bikes, and we try to see if we could get as much of that into a cast dropout, which is gonna reduce the price of the bike by quite a bit, and the complexity and- Make it a little bit more reliable.
• 12:07
Uh, uh, so we really looked into it, and we got a dropout that did everything, uh, for a thru-axle or a QR, and basically went with thru-axle because more and more people are running them.
• 12:18
Um, they're stronger, they're stiffer, and the new cast one-piece dropout has a front axle dump because once you pull your thru-axle out, you can just dump it out the front instead of out the back, and we're all familiar with how annoying that could be in the winter, middle of the winter.
• 12:32
  Yeah.
• 12:32
Um, and so we were almost there, and then we came up with a really good little washer adapter design that actually lets you run a 170QR wheel on this dropout too, for this bike, and so circle was complete at that point.
• 12:47
You know, like we... You can run whatever the hell you can find, which is important to us. That's very- Yeah... uh, very much like the bike I ride right now, [laughs] just like sounds perfect. Yeah, it, it, it- Yeah...
• 13:00
that whole part of it is so true to what I, what I think the core of Surly's goodness is, is that whole you can build this bike from the stuff that is in your garage and at swap meets, and it can be a great entry level bike.
• 13:20
So we have some questions. And that's important to us.
• 13:22
You know, like we want, we want them to be, um, they look good on the sales floor, but also, you know, when you're three years in and the bike's kind of rusty and dirty, but you see it in the back of a truck at a swap meet, and you're like, "Man, I know I can build that thing up with something sweet, and I know it's good," and that's important.
• 13:39
And we want the things to sell good now and hold their value, you know, down the road because they're awesome, you know, so. Well, cool.
• 13:46
So we actually have, we had the, we put the word out that we're gonna be talking to you, and we had, uh, some questions come in from our listeners.
• 13:55
So we have a, a, uh, guy, Phil Tomlinson, he wrote us, and he asked if the new Wednesday can fit a 29 plus wheel set. Uh, absolutely. Yes, it can. No problem. Uh, 29 by 3 is,
• 14:09
you know, it's like Tic Tac to a whale, you know? Uh- [laughs]... the dropout, [laughs] it's, it could've been a lot worse than that. Uh- [laughs]...
• 14:18
the dropout is 20 mils of fore/aft adjustment in it, and so the, the diameter of a 29, 3 tire, um, will hit the seat tube full forward, but at 10 mils back or so, at 445 chainstay length, you're golden.
• 14:30
At that point you could probably run a 29 by who knows what's gonna come out in a couple years, you know? Sure. So it is- It's always changing... uh, w- at full forward, what's the chainstay length? It's 435- Right on...
• 14:43
which is five mils shorter than any, any bike like this that I could find, so. Yeah. I'll remember that. Awesome. [laughs] Works, works good. One of our test pilots, Olav Stendland,
• 14:55
over there in Sweden, he had a couple of questions. One is mostly about the tire width, which you kind of already, already covered, but he also asked what does a frame weigh, just the frame? Oh, the frame.
• 15:09
The frame weighs... I think, before I say anything, let me make sure this is right. I have a number in my head, and I'll get right there. Can we guess at the number, and then you can tell us if we're right or wrong?
• 15:23
Yeah. I'm, I'm guessing, I'm guessing- So- So we're going, let's go for- Give me the closest right... like a med- The weight is right... like a medium sized or a large. What do you want, medium or large?
• 15:30
I'm gonna go large. Okay. Let's do medium. Let's do medium. Oh, medium? All right. Medium s- No, 'cause you guys, you guys have a large, so you could avoid that. Yeah. Yeah, we'll do a medium.
• 15:38
Well, no, no, no, I'm, I'm go- I'm going by th- I'm using my idiot savant balance here. Yeah, medium sized, no fork, just the frame. Right. See, okay, okay, this is, this could be really interesting.
• 15:48
I'll give you a Pug weight or an Ice Cream Truck weight in the same size, and then you can have a little bit- I, I don't need a hint, dude. See, I- Yeah, I, I got a number in my head...
• 15:56
I have a number in my head, and I'm telling you, like- You guys are teasing me. I said that. [laughs] Okay. All right, all right, all right. Got it. Let's hear them, both of you two. Go, guys. All right, I'll go first.
• 16:04
I'm gonna go with four, four pounds, 4.99 pounds. I was gonna say 4.9 too, but I'm just gonna go like 5.1, just to be higher than you. Oh. Oh, man. So I can be more than you. Oh. Okay, you get it both wrong.
• 16:20
He wins, doesn't he? Uh- Really? [laughs] The Wednesday frame weight at a medium is 5.8 pounds. Right on. Oh, so, so- Both very good... Sven won. But both very wrong. He was closer. Yeah, yeah.
• 16:33
No, I, I mean, just- He goes to the bonus round... you know, I think you can tell a lot about how a bike is built by what it weighs, you know? I mean- Yeah. [laughs]... it, it's a good thing.
• 16:42
I, I've, I've ridden some pretty light steel frames, and they don't last very long. [laughs] Yeah, heavy's reliable, you know? Um- Yep...
• 16:49
that's about, that's about a third of a pound more than a Pug frame, and about a pound less than an Ice Cream Truck frame, so. And you've been- Right there... you know, that's, that's all been on your blog.
• 16:59
You, you actually, you put the weights up there today? Oh, yeah. That's what I was looking at. Thanks, Gomez. I was cheating. No, that's all right. [laughs] That's all right. I was cheating too. Yeah.
• 17:06
I was going by my memory. I just remembered it was five pounds, not 5.8- Right... so that's why I went 4.99. And then Sven snaked me and went- Yeah... right above me instead of below me. Yep. Damn it. So I wanna... Yeah.
• 17:19
Anyway. All right, I got sniped. [laughs] And, uh, we actually have one more question, and this is, this is a fairly interesting question because when this was all explained to me up at, uh, in, in Arden,
• 17:34
I did not know that all of your other frames have a, a great deal of, uh, what's it called when the tubing is thinned out? Butted. Butting, it's called. Butted.
• 17:45
You, you have custom butted tubes on, on many other of your, other of your bikes, and- Uh-huh... so tell us about the tube set. The, the question is- Tubing...
• 17:53
what are the frame tube set differences between the Wednesday, the Pug, and the Ice Cream Truck? Oh, you've got another question. Ah, that's a great question. Um, yes, all, all of our frames are custom butted steel.
• 18:07
We're not very good at talking about it, but, uh, they're all there. Um, so- I know, that's what, I was surprised to hear that. I was like, "What, what?" Okay Yeah It says it on the sticker So much better. Um [laughs]
• 18:17
You... [laughs] I can't read. Um, so the Ice Cream Truck has a very advanced tube set.
• 18:26
It's actually tapered externally and internally, so it's actually triple butted, and the outside of the tube grows from the diameter of the seat tube all the way up to the diameter of the head tube. Hmm.
• 18:36
And there's different tube, tubes for each size. It's insane. Um, they're really, really strong. They're designed to work without a gusset if you don't need one. Mm-hmm.
• 18:46
Um, w- they're pretty amazing, but they are very expensive to make, and then even more expensive to miter, and then m- even more expensive to fixture when welding because th- they don't have a constant OD.
• 18:57
And so as stiff and awesome looking and strong as they make a frame, um, they're really expensive. [laughs] Um, the Pug has an older tube set that's still double butted, um, with gussets on it.
• 19:09
Um, it's, it's a smaller tube set from when, uh, engineering stand- or compliance test- testing standards were a little bit different. Uh, that's been stepped up in the past few years.
• 19:20
So this tube set is still round OD, uh, double butted all around, um, but a little bit bigger than the Pug, and hence this frame is a little bit heavier, quite a bit stronger than a Pug, um, in terms of that.
• 19:35
So the fork length on it's a little bit longer than a Pug, but shorter than an Ice Cream Truck, so, uh, still all custom and different, different buttings- Is, is it, uh-...
• 19:44
uh, lengths for the sizes and different tubes all over, so Is it set up as Bluto compatible, for the, uh- It is... the fork length?
• 19:52
So one of the most complicated things [laughs] that I have been trying to explain is, um, the fact that it, it ships with a Force 68 millimeter rigid fork, which is close to the sag, sag, riding sag length of a Bluto 80 millimeter fork.
• 20:06
And so there was, uh, a lot of people assumed it was designed around an 80 millimeter suspension fork, would make sense, but it was actually designed, uh, with 100 millimeter suspension fork in mind.
• 20:16
And the hard thing to talk about is why that rigid fork isn't the same length as a 100 mil suspension fork- Right... that it's designed to ride around, and that, that could be a, a huge, uh, vortex we could spin into.
• 20:30
But basically- Yes... a rigid bike, w- we like to keep it snappy and short. That's how most people like to ride, and they like their BBs a little bit lower.
• 20:37
Um, most people that like a sus fork like their BBs a little bit higher because it comes down as you use- Right... the suspension. Right.
• 20:42
They like their head tube a little bit slacker, and so there's a, there's an opportunity there to, to have the frame build into two bikes that most, that both camps really like.
• 20:51
And we, we worked on, and 468 just ended up to work out really good for that.
• 20:55
If you compare the numbers between an Ice Cream Truck with 100 millimeter Bluto on it, which that was designed for, and a Wednesday with 100 mill- millimeter Bluto on it, they're, like, a half a degree different, and the BBs are almost in the same spot.
• 21:08
If, if the Wednesday had that length fork on it rigid, I feel like we'd miss an opportunity to kinda reach a group that doesn't care about Bluto and just wants a really good handling rigid bike.
• 21:19
And so with the rigid fork on it, it pulls itself away from the Ice Cream Truck a little bit, allows it to have a lighter frame, uh, better looking fork, lighter fork, lighter frame. Cool. So that's why we did that.
• 21:31
You guys overthink this stuff it sounds like. [laughs] Andy maybe should- We do, yeah, we do that with everything. [laughs] Andy might actually be too smart to be on our show.
• 21:39
Yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm like the rocket scientist like- No, that's not true. [laughs] I had to have someone dial this number for me, Gomez. There, I can't do it.
• 21:47
[laughs] And then, uh, we have one, uh, like, smart-ass question. Uh, John May from the Space Book, he, he asks, "Can we call it a Steel Bear Grease?" What the fuck does that mean? [laughs] Bear Grease?
• 22:04
That's different. [laughs] Uh, he can call it whatever he wants, you know? Good answer, Andy. I think that's cool. As long as he buys one. [laughs] Yeah. Oh, yeah. You gotta buy one, and then- Buy one-...
• 22:16
you can name it whatever the hell you want... you can name it whatever the hell you want. Otherwise, you gotta call it Wednesday. [laughs] Yeah. Well, thanks for coming on the show and straightening us out, Andy. Yeah.
• 22:26
Yeah. Is that all the questions you guys got? I was, uh, I kinda prepared myself for anything. Maybe, maybe you have something you'd like to ask us. [laughs] I do, but I think we might not do it on air. All right. Okay.
• 22:37
Are you- Yeah... gonna be out at, uh, Interbike? No, I'm sticking around. You get to stay home. Oh, boy. Sounds like fun. Yeah, uh-huh. We're gonna have to go take care- So I'm gonna stick around and pull that info...
• 22:46
of Mr. Sav for you then. We're gonna, uh, do our radio show live from the El Rancho Pool in Boulder City- Oh, boy... Nevada next week. Uh, two weeks from- Okay... two weeks from now. No, no, we're, we're close, right?
• 23:00
So I'll just say, keep your equipment away from that pool. [laughs] Like, whatever you don't want to get wet, just don't bring it to the pool. Oh, yeah, that's something to actually think about, isn't it? All right.
• 23:08
All right, yeah, we gotta keep the equipment out of the pool, that's for sure. I gotta keep my equipment somewhere [laughs] for sure. [laughs] Hey, thanks for the tip, Andy. Lord Skoglund- Yeah...
• 23:19
from the planet- You're welcome... Surly, ladies and gentlemen. Yeah, thank- Any time... thanks a lot, Andy. Hope to talk to you again. Yeah, yeah. All right, bye guys. See ya. Hey, guess what? It's union break again?
• 23:34
[laughs] Well, uh, we've, we've got a caller on the line. Oh, no way. Yeah, way. Cool. Let's do it. Who we talking to? Sup? Hey, guys. Travis up in Alaska, man. How you doing? Travis.

So the movie, the movie Breaking Away won, uh, won a Golden Globe in 1980 and a, uh, a, he, it won the Golden Globe for Best Motion, Motion Picture, so it was like Best Picture award. Yeah, it was- I did-...
• 47:04
yeah, it was nominated up for a bunch of Oscars... so I, I don't know what, I don't know what it was up against. I mean, I've seen Breaking Away a bunch of times. Uh- It, it won an Oscar for Best Writing in a Screenplay.
• 47:13
Wasn't, wasn't Star Wars out in 1980? [laughs] What are you trying to say, the Golden Globes- Well, I just-... had their head up their ass? [laughs] I mean, I've, I've probably seen that movie at least- Yeah... 20 times.
• 47:26
Uh-huh. Of hardship. I've seen it all the way through probably twice, but- Uh-huh... and I ca- whenever I catch a spot, it's like, "Oh, there it is," and I watch whatever part's on 'cause it's a great movie.
• 47:35
"Moira, move, papa." [laughs] Ciao, bella. Goddammit, I want french fries. [laughs] All these -ini foods. Yeah. Penne. That's a classic. So but, but the joke of the, I mean, the, uh, is it the joke?
• 47:48
Is it the punchline to this whole thing is- They want 100 clams to reserve a spot at the gala awards, and they want [laughs] 125 at the door if you don't pre- pre-register.
• 47:59
I'm just, if, if it's for, like, trail advocacy or something, I could see throwing some money down maybe, but- Utters fund. Cutters. [laughs] Cutters. [laughs] So you probably won't see Sven, Gomez, or Dirty.
• 48:13
Well- Maybe Dirty, though, with his legit- And if we, if, if we do show up-... little dirty on top, you know... they'll probably push us away and say, "You cannot come in here." [laughs] "You are not allowed."
• 48:21
[laughs] You guys were mean on the podcast. So anyway. But still, you gotta admit. Uh, it's funny. There's another thing going down up north. [laughs] It's like, yeah, we, yeah, it, we, it's pure comedy.
• 48:38
It's like JK being the last, [laughs] last living member of The Archies. [laughs] It's a joke, man. [laughs] That's the joke. [laughs] That's a joke, son. Yeah.
• 48:50
Well, we got- Well, you know, we got, we got punchlines, we got jokes, we got parables perhaps, and fat bike links. We do. I was searching and searching for Eurobike stuff about fat bikes.
• 49:02
There just didn't seem to be a whole lot. I've been begging Cannondale, my contacts at Cannondale [laughs] to talk to me about this fat CAD. Hopefully they'll be at Interbike and we can, we can surround them. Yeah.
• 49:13
You, me, Dirty, all of us will- And [techno music] [laughs] Maybe with techno music and, and stuff. Yeah, we should, we should bring- 'Cause they're very European...
• 49:20
we should have that Cannondale version just on, like, a [techno music] You know what they ought to make is, like, a little one-play flash drive or something that every time you push the button it plays the same thing, then you can record it yourself.
• 49:31
Dang. And it would be like, [techno music] JM. Yeah. So, uh, but they did show their new fat bike at Eurobike, and they admitted that they were a little, a little late to the game- Mm-hmm...
• 49:43
but they felt that it made them pick the right thing right away. Mm-hmm. Well- I don't know. We'll see... they, well, exactly. Didn't, didn't our girl, uh, uh, Katie have something to do with the graphics on that one?
• 49:55
Yeah, she, she showed me graphics a long time ago. Yeah, she's the graphical, graphical genius on the- But she plays it very cool.
• 50:02
You know, the, th- these employees have to be, you know, they have to be very, very tight-lipped, and they really can't, you know- It's-... they can't say things... it's so un-fat bike to do that. I don't know.
• 50:14
I don't know. Whatever. I like to do whatever I do and everybody else can just, [laughs] uh, do what they do. Suck it. Do what they do. [laughs] Suck it. Wow. Well said, Travis. Suck it. Suck it.
• 50:27
Uh, the guys out there at, uh, at Bruce's place in East Lothian in Scotland.
• 50:33
Yeah, our, our man Jeff Price went riding with, with Bruce, and there'll, you'll see a video of that coming up here on the, uh, www.fat-bike.com. Rawr. Meanwhile, you can get a teaser over there at the Coast Kids site.
• 50:48
Bruce, we have to, we have to hang with that dude. We have to just sit in a mossy, rocky alcove and drink peaty scotch. Peaty. And, uh, I don't know. I only have one scotch story so fa- so far. I need more.
• 51:05
[laughs] More scotch stories, please. More scotch stories, please. [laughs] Hey, you know what else, uh, is cool? Plus bike links. [laughs] Hey- Um, uh-... tell me more. Tell me more... hey, I'll be Mr. Segue this show.
• 51:20
You're- Jetty, Jetty Segue. [laughs] We're playing fast and loose. Asian Bob- Uh, you'd think after show number 70 he'd know how to do it. [laughs] Dude- Wee... that was freaking smooth as butter. Butter. Mm-hmm.
• 51:36
So- Do, do tell... we got Asian Bob here on an MG Cycles, that's a B+ bike, met, uh, Dirty on his journey across the southern part, the northern part of the southern part of our great country. Great country.
• 51:53
He was saying something about hippies down south, but, uh, I think he made... Did he make it to his final destination, though? He s- he said he could not call in tonight 'cause he has 70 miles left- Right...
• 52:02
and he's gonna ride all night. And we were doing this via text, so I just said, "You tried meth, didn't you?" [laughs] Hey, that's what they got down there. He's like, "No, I can just, I can
• 52:13
see a cold beer and a naked woman," he said. Huh. Hmm. Hmm. 70 miles. 70 miles and- He's got a vision. [laughs] Not a sister, I assume. I hope not. [laughs] Well,
• 52:29
we had Andy Skoglund from Surly on the show. Yeah. Let's give them another shout-out, and thanks Surly for sponsoring the radio portion of today's broadcast. Yeah, Surly's cool and stuff. But you know what's even cooler?
• 52:45
[laughs] Then, then, then- That was an extended one. [laughs] What could be cooler? Um- What could be cooler? Oh. We have a new gift shop on the old base place. I like to call it space place.com.
• 53:00
Did you see how I got the little- Space place.com... the little thing that says shop- You got to move over... right in the place where you- See- Yes... right in the middle. Yeah. Well played.
• 53:09
That, that's Sven, ladies and gentlemen. A little golf- Well, give a little-... golf clap for, for Sven. [laughs] [clapping] Thank you. He got the whole thing. He's doing the whole... He is our shopkeeper.
• 53:17
When you order something- Well-... Sven is gonna see it- [laughs] For this, for- Where there's one, one thing, and then- And then who knows? And then, yeah, whatever. Maybe, maybe we'll, maybe we're, we're hiring.
• 53:28
Yeah, maybe. [laughs] So yeah, we're, we're starting to get a couple things on there. We've got buttons on there right now, two different sizes. We got patches that'll be on there really soon.
• 53:38
And we're doing the Yeti Van Evil T-shirt- Yeah... which is kind of the coup de grâce of these next six weeks. 'Cause basically the idea is we're gonna do this for six weeks.
• 53:47
And I already got a really kick-ass idea for a design for a n- for a new shirt. Yeah, we're gonna do... So we're, what we're gonna do is we're gonna take pre-orders, because we're just gonna print as many as people want.
• 53:58
We're not gonna get stuck with inventory on these things. Right. Uh, you know, we're not made out of money over here. Right. So, uh, what we're gonna do is we're gonna have two print dates.
• 54:08
They'll be clearly labeled in the, in the, uh, the description. You pay for it. If you get in before the first one, we do it on the first run. Second one, second run. After that's over, though, it's over.
• 54:20
We're not doing any more of that shirt. But we're gonna bring another one online. Right. I have groovy ideas- Yeah... for new designs.
• 54:28
And we have a lot of really cool archive designs that- You're gonna wanna look at Right, and, you know, thank Uncle Gomez 'cause he does search out the artists and the, the, the people, the skilled folk, the ones with the, the knowledge and the talent to, uh, actually help us with some of these crazy ideas.
• 54:46
Yeah, it's, uh... [clapping] All right. Oh, golf clap. You get the golf clap. Oh, very good. Very, very good. You get a golf clap. And JK Living, everybody, thank you for coming here [laughing] every single week.
• 54:56
I get, I get a golf clap. [laughs] Whether, whether we invite you or not, you show up. [laughs] And, uh, and thanks again. Press, with my nose, press the [laughs] cancel window.
• 55:06
[laughs] This is, this is just choking me up now. This is like, this is like, uh, I don't know, bye bye birdie here. So that's the shop thing- Something like that... pretty much. Or t- Just check it out.
• 55:13
There's a little, uh, there's a little link right along the, underneath our m- banner picture or whatever that says Shop. Right. Click on that and, uh- If it doesn't work, don't blame me.
• 55:23
[laughs] Oh yeah, wait, do blame me. Hey, well, yeah. Let me know. [laughs] I don't know about that. It'll work. It's fat- It's a hint... fat-bike.com. That's, that's where it lives. If you expect an answer,
• 55:35
good luck with that. [laughs] Customer service, ladies and gentlemen. All right. Well, Travis, I, I guess we're gonna, we're gonna pass out, I mean, step out of here pretty quick.
• 55:45
Yeah, I think we're done except for next week's question. You have that right on the tip of your, uh- Mm-hmm... Manchu there. Yep. Join us next week where the question of the week,
• 55:54
what is your fat bike dream destination? Call 818-918-2453 anytime day or night and leave Sven and Gomez a message.
• 56:04
Yeah, I think that's important to, uh, just keep hammering away at, is you guys can call and leave us a message. We'll include it in the show.
• 56:10
So if you can't make it at the generous one-hour window that we give you [laughs] from 8:00 to 9:00 Central Time every week- And you can just call and say-...
• 56:18
uh, you have the other 257 hours or however many hours [laughs] during the week to, to leave us a message... "Yo, my name is Dex, and my dream fat bike destination is the planet Love Tron. Get real, brat." Go Dex.
• 56:31
That is, that's, you know, n- that would make it on our radio program if that's what you're into. Yeah. [laughs] We have some other ideas for him too down the road. [laughs] All right, Travis.
• 56:41
Don't, don't have anybody call- Thanks for hanging out, man... and leave that message though. Hey, it was great talking with you guys. And real quick, I did, I did talk to Kathy Merchen a couple weeks ago. Oh, yeah?
• 56:50
She, she did call me in regarding, uh, volunteering for the, uh, expo and the Big Fat Ride. Nice. And, uh, told her, "Yeah, wherever you see my skill set most needed, happy to do it."
• 57:02
And, uh, so she's putting a couple committees together, one for the ride, one for the expo. Mm-hmm.
• 57:07
And I think what she's got going is really cool, you know, having, uh, everybody do the Big Fat Ride and have everything dump back at the convention center.
• 57:16
And, uh, she did say she's got, like, 250 pizzas lined up and a couple of kegs donated already. Okay. All right. That'll cover me and Gomez. Our, uh, our friend, uh- [laughs]...
• 57:28
Kevin Breitenbach is going to lead a ride, I understand, if I can believe- Awesome... what I read on the interwebs. Very cool. He, he's, uh, he's up in Fairbanks, right? Right. Right, right. One of the nicest guys. Cool.
• 57:42
Oh, yeah. Where they, where they've already received snow this year. Yeah, they already got their first snow up in Fairbanks. Oh, yeah. It was 28 degrees at my house this morning in Anchorage. Uh, when I- Oh...
• 57:52
got back from my Oregon trip, there was termination dust, a little dust in the snow on the hillside. Leaves are starting to turn, and, uh, I am so ready for a wintertime night ride. The moose are- Right on...
• 58:04
the moose are starting to get randy. So I, I think m- we should have- Oh, man. I got- I got a contest. We should have a contest. I got charged by a moose last night. Wow. Really? What kind of cards do they take?
• 58:14
[laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Do they take Diner's Club? Ah, da, da, bum. No, only American Express, man. Oh, [laughs] okay.
• 58:25
[laughs] I was up playing ball with my dog in the field, man, and this cow charged me with two calves. Oh. And I'd seen her earlier, and she takes off in the woods.
• 58:33
Next thing I know, man, she pops out of the woods and is just in a dead straight run coming straight at me. So I dock off into the woods with my dog, and I'm hiding in some alders.
• 58:44
And I see her go by, and I see the two calves go by, and I'm like, "Something has to be pushing these." I, I mean, a cow moose just doesn't charge from that far away.
• 58:53
She was, like, 100 yards when she started running at me, and I saw her. It was really weird. So I hung out in the woods some more, and sure enough, man, the randy bull, uh, comes walking on by.
• 59:03
Uh, yeah, she was, she had a suitor looking to, uh- With, with two kids from-... looking to man up here... two different, two different male moose from two different years [laughs] Yeah And now she's getting a third.
• 59:16
That's a big animal. Oh, yeah. And they all know kung fu. Man, those big guys, man. They, like, they, like, goose step, and they, like, kick you in the face and then trifle you. Oh, yeah. Yeah, big...
• 59:27
Definitely a major concern. [laughs] You don't wanna get the cow. It was 1,000 pounds of meat, man. Step back from the moose, please. All right, Travis. Well, we're gonna wrap this thing up.
• 59:37
Thanks for calling in and hanging out. You're, uh, you're an awesome ambassador, fat ambassador. Yeah, I think that you're the ambassador of the month for August. Congratulations. That should entitle- Awesome...
• 59:47
that should probably entitle you to something. Golf clap. [clapping] [laughs] I wouldn't count on it, but you never know. [laughs] We gotta send him a patch or- Hey, stop laughing. It's all right, man... something.
• 59:56
My pleasure and honor. All right, man. All right. See you next week or whenever. All right. You guys have a good week, man. Okay, bye. All right, boys and girls. [laughs] That's all for the show. Bye bye. Bye.
