- 0:00Kyle, how important is it for NASCAR to have a superstar,
- 0:02somebody who transcends the sport, like Richard Petty or
- 0:05Dale Earnhardt or Jeff Gordon, and and do we have one now?
- 0:10And what would it take to get there if we don't?
- 0:12You're looking at him. No, I'm kidding.
- 0:16I think his name's Chase. He's he's the man.
- 0:20So ask him, but yeah, I mean we we don't have for whatever
- 0:26reason, I I'm not sure what it is but you have the diehard fans
- 0:29of NASCAR, of the Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace,
- 0:34Terry Labonte, Mark Martin, Harry Gant, you name it, guys
- 0:37from the 90s, mid 90s, late 90s, all of that and our world now
- 0:44today of the 2024 is a lot different fan base of following
- 0:49along. We, I don't feel like we were
- 0:50able to transition a lot of the fans that were fans of those
- 0:54drivers of the names that I just mentioned into a William Byron
- 0:57fan or into a Kyle fan or into whoever.
- 1:02You know they kind of probably went away and just stopped
- 1:06following as much Which is hard to say because honestly like
- 1:11when you look at NASCAR the fans love the drivers like the driver
- 1:15star power. That's what brings people to the
- 1:17racetrack is the drivers. When you look at the NFL for
- 1:20instance those players on that team change so often.
- 1:24You guys think my pit crew names changing every week is is a lot
- 1:29look at the roster changes of of NFL teams and what they do with
- 1:32it, what they go through with their 53 man roster.
- 1:34But fans are are fans of the teams.
- 1:37And a lot of times, you know, I'll throw a name, Jacksonville,
- 1:42for instance, the last few years, like they're coming back
- 1:44because of a Trevor Lawrence, right?
- 1:46They've got somebody back that has brought the team back into
- 1:49the forefront. But before that, their stadiums
- 1:51were empty, you know what I mean?
- 1:52So you can find the same struggles across different
- 1:56sports as what we see sometimes. Kelly Crandall racer.com Kyle, I
- 1:59just want to go back to what you were telling Matt.
- 2:01About how it's. Been here for.
- 2:02You in the. Next Gen. car.
- 2:03How much of that is? The.
- 2:05Feeling of the car being so different from what you were
- 2:07used to here and how much of it is rhythm when it?
- 2:09Comes to to this racetrack and just knowing how you what you
- 2:13want to feel and how you want to be able to run this racetrack.
- 2:16Well, Bristol is a lot of rhythm, but it takes a feel of
- 2:19what you're looking for here as well too.
- 2:21So this car just drives a lot different and the and it drives
- 2:25a lot different because of the limitations in which it's built.
- 2:29You know It just has a different way of of you needing to go
- 2:33about it. And I've learned some of that.
- 2:35But I'm I guess I'm not the best at figuring out how to be better
- 2:40than some of the other drivers or maybe their cars are better
- 2:43than my car. I don't know.
- 2:44It's not like we can swap seats. So you know I I'd always run
- 2:49this place more round. Like I'd always try to make it
- 2:52as much of a circle as I possibly could.
- 2:54And now you kind of run this place in a diamond.
- 2:57You go up to the wall, you try to come off the wall, you go up
- 3:00to the wall in the corner, you come off the wall, you go up to,
- 3:02you know what I mean? So it's, it's more diamond
- 3:04shaped. So it's definitely a different
- 3:06way of running it that seems to be a little bit more of the
- 3:08faster way this day and age. So it's a different technique to
- 3:11get used to. But that's not to say that I I
- 3:14can't do it. It's just a matter of sometimes
- 3:16you can't outrace your own equipment and you've got to go
- 3:20and get what you can get out of it, but nothing more.
- 3:23Jacob Zuman, Race Face Digital. Kyle, I know it's the first time
- 3:26we've been on the concrete here in the spring in a couple years.
- 3:28But with it being a concrete surface at Bristol, do you
- 3:32notice as much of A change compared to other tracks that we
- 3:35visit twice where you've got a daytime race versus the night
- 3:38race when we come back in September?
- 3:43Probably not as much here at Bristol as normal.
- 3:48So I would say that both races here tend to act very much more
- 3:55similar than other places we go to.
- 3:57It's like even Martinsville, the way the gaps are between the
- 4:01asphalt and the concrete, they change from spring to fall.
- 4:04But here, being all concrete and not much temperature variation
- 4:10in the concrete surface itself compared to asphalt, you don't
- 4:14notice as much we'll. Go next to Bob.
- 4:21Bob Parker's Fox Sports had a couple of the first.
- 4:23Have you seen where they've kind of repaved and patched at Coda,
- 4:27and if so, how will that impact the race?
- 4:30I don't think it's going to impact the race any I have seen,
- 4:32yeah, I think they got rid of a bump on the exit of one.
- 4:35I think they did a little bit into the back stretch straight
- 4:38away through is that 12 or 13 and then out of the carousel and
- 4:44into 19. So I don't foresee it changing a
- 4:49whole lot. Like you'll be lack of grip
- 4:50probably through the carousel and then you'll pick up grip on
- 4:53the exit and be able to go much faster through 19.
- 4:57But then out of 19 it's back to the old asphalt and turn 20 is
- 5:00very slow with old asphalt being as slick as it is.
- 5:02So I don't know that it really opens up any more opportunities
- 5:10of passing or anything like that, just smoother surface I'd
- 5:14imagine. And well, we're not expecting
- 5:18any change in horsepower, let's say if NASCAR would were to
- 5:21change the spacer and give you more horsepower, like what else
- 5:25would you need to know? Like would you need to check
- 5:28gearing? Check tires, check the transaxle
- 5:31Like from your kind of mechanical knowledge of the car,
- 5:33like what? What else would need to happen
- 5:36before you could actually go out on the track?
- 5:39I would say the only thing that would be a limiting factor might
- 5:42be the transaxle, but honestly I've never really looked inside
- 5:44one or seen the components of one to see how sturdy the gears
- 5:48are. That would about be the only
- 5:50thing in my book of just knowing whether or not it would
- 5:54withstand the horsepower gain. I would imagine that it would
- 5:57that it wouldn't be that big of a deal because I think extract
- 6:03builds transmissions and such for like off road racing and and
- 6:06things like that where they're over 1000 horsepower.
- 6:09So I'm sure they're used to or at least have experience in that
- 6:12realm of the higher horsepower brakes are fine, we don't blow
- 6:17the tires off enough. I think that's what we're all
- 6:19kind of talking about. We need these things to be
- 6:21faster, going into the corner, utilizing the brakes more,
- 6:24utilizing the tires more, having an opportunity to to OverDrive
- 6:27the cars more, to to burn the tires up and then see guys, you
- 6:32know struggle over a run. Let's go to Matt Weaver and then
- 6:38to Mark Garrow. Matt Weaver Sports not you've
- 6:41had various runs here over the years to where you've been
- 6:43really, really good and this place has changed a ton, whether
- 6:46it's been the the surface or the way the track was cut up on the
- 6:49top or whatever. What are the things that make
- 6:52you good at Bristol And it does. This car and this current
- 6:55version of the track and the resin, Does that give you
- 6:57confidence here given what you've had before?
- 6:59Is it just a completely different place?
- 7:01The car really changes a lot for it for me.
- 7:06You know we won here with this car on the dirt surface, but I
- 7:09would say that since we've been bringing the new next Gen. to
- 7:13the concrete surface, I have not found my way with it yet.
- 7:15You know, So had definitely had a a way with understanding this
- 7:19place and and having a a sense of setup and how to drive it and
- 7:22whatnot with the old stuff but not with the new stuff.
- 7:26So we'll see what what happens here this weekend with with our
- 7:29#8 fico Chevrolet. Looking forward to the truck
- 7:32race. It's been a long time since I've
- 7:34been in a truck here. I think the last time was 17
- 7:35when I won. So certainly be nice to to come
- 7:39out here and you know, go back to Victory Lane with one of
- 7:41those. And I know you have a lot of
- 7:43affinity and respect for Bubba Pollard and he's going to make
- 7:46his Xfinity debut here in a couple of weeks.
- 7:48What does that mean to NASCAR, the short track industry, To
- 7:52have him get a chance and tell his story to this crowd and
- 7:55audience? Yeah, no, I love it.
- 7:57I I, you know, a guy that works as hard as he does and and does
- 8:01as much on his own as he does. I mean he's he's a really smooth
- 8:05guy. I've raced against him a lot and
- 8:08we've had some really good battles.
- 8:09We've always been cordial with one another.
- 8:11I think the only time was one of the younger kids that was racing
- 8:15for me he punted him out of the way at I think it was Alabama
- 8:19one time at a race down there and he said, well that's what
- 8:22Kyle would do and I called him and I'm like bro, when have I
- 8:24ever done that to you? Like come on man.
- 8:26And so you know we we've always had a a good relationship.
- 8:29So I respect the hell out of him for what what he does and he's
- 8:32honestly one of the best, definitely one of the best from
- 8:35the South in the Super late model ranks.
- 8:38I've raced against a lot of greats, you know, out on the
- 8:40West Coast, up in the Northeast, Midwest.
- 8:43A lot of different names that that always come come to mind
- 8:46all. Right.
- 8:47We'll go to Mark Lee Spencer and then Dustin Long.
- 8:50Mark, Arrow, PRN, Kyle, good afternoon.
- 8:55Last year you seemed to get off to such a quick start.
- 8:57How would you categorize what's happened this year in the
- 9:01opening part of the year? Yeah, I would say, I mean the
- 9:04clash was great. We ran really well there.
- 9:06Daytona, we were fast. If I would have chose a
- 9:08different line on a restart, we probably would have had a a top
- 9:11four at Daytona for sure. Atlanta coming oh so close there
- 9:15with you know just need a couple inches to win that thing And
- 9:19then you know Vegas we're really fast.
- 9:23We're probably one of the only guys that could keep up with
- 9:24Kyle tiny Kyle and you know we had a a great shot there and
- 9:29then just you know pit Rd. was our demise and then last week
- 9:34obviously just not very good in general with the short track
- 9:37stuff still we've we've I I didn't we've tried everything so
- 9:41I don't even know where to go next with with what we do next
- 9:43but we'll see with some new ideas if anything works here at
- 9:47Bristol being as though it's it's a short track race but it's
- 9:51definitely still the different aero package but yeah I mean
- 9:55we've we've come to find what our strengths are and what our
- 9:58middle ground is and where our weaknesses are for sure.
- 10:00So we we keep trying to improve on all of them.
- 10:03Is the pit crew still an unsettled situation or do you
- 10:06think you've got the pieces now going to let them kind of work
- 10:09their way through it and smooth everything out?
- 10:12I would say it's still unsettled.
- 10:14Obviously. You know the the proof is in
- 10:16your results, right? You're only as good as your last
- 10:18race, as our US drivers tend to say.
- 10:21So you're only as good as your last stop I guess as a pit crew
- 10:23guy should say. But I know everybody at the shop
- 10:27and and all of our CR is working hard on trying to figure
- 10:29something out and and get through it with the resources
- 10:32that we have. And you know each week we'll
- 10:36we'll keep trying to fine tune the the personnel and and make
- 10:39the best that we can out of the situation.
- 10:40We got to have at least decent stops.
- 10:43You know, my thing is it's like they're either the defense or
- 10:45the special teams unit, whatever.
- 10:47However you want to look at that right when you come down Pit Rd.
- 10:49I've been saying it the last couple years since we've been
- 10:50racing this car. The easiest time to pass people
- 10:53is when they're sitting still. It's when they're in their pit
- 10:55box. And so we can't be the ones that
- 10:58were that are always getting past, you know, we need to hold
- 11:01our own. Right.
- 11:03We're going to try to get in four more questions for Kyle
- 11:05here. So we're going to go to Lee,
- 11:06we're going to go to Dustin, Chris and finish with Kelly.
- 11:11Lee Spencer SiriusXM NASCAR Radio and Catch fence.com Your
- 11:16teammate Austin Dillon was talking last week about making
- 11:20the tire tread or the, you know, the width of the tire smaller.
- 11:24He said it would make you guys feel like you have more speed
- 11:27with the new short track package.
- 11:29And I'm kind of curious whether or not you follow that
- 11:33philosophy and how do you think that that package will react at
- 11:38Richmond. Yeah, I mean I can see where
- 11:41he's coming from. I think we've all kind of said
- 11:43that when the tire got wider, we all knew it was going to produce
- 11:46more grip. We all expected it to be softer.
- 11:49So it would wear and it would wear out and then you would
- 11:52have, you know, less grip over the course of a run and have
- 11:55some fall off. But unfortunately we we haven't
- 11:58seen that. You know, we haven't seen that
- 11:59softer compound yet. We saw last year here at this
- 12:03race in particular where guys stayed out on 60-70 lap tires,
- 12:07went to the rest of the way on the first stage and and won the
- 12:10stage. You know, guys were finishing in
- 12:11the top ten by staying out. So you don't want to have tire
- 12:16blowouts. I I get that.
- 12:17I I understand Goodyear's sake on that on that part.
- 12:20But you know, I think when we have had softer tires in the
- 12:24past and we had had blowouts, that's because they were softer
- 12:28because they wore out because we punished them.
- 12:30You know, so like you're you're kind of to your own demise in a
- 12:35sense, but I guess tires not holding air probably don't sell
- 12:40well on Monday. So and how you think at having
- 12:44driven this package at Phoenix? Do you think that it'll help the
- 12:47racing at Richmond? No, no, no.
- 12:54The the problem starts at the front of the car.
- 12:57The the, the splitter and the way the air is and everything
- 12:59that we all do for for set up stuff to make these things rely
- 13:02on the air as much as they do. That's the problem.
- 13:05They they, I think they went about it.
- 13:08It's a funny way to say it backwards.
- 13:11There's another way of saying that I'll leave it for another
- 13:13day, but they start at the back of the car, That's not the
- 13:15problem. It's at the front of the car.
- 13:18So that's it. Thank.
- 13:21You, Dustin Long NBC Sports with with all the talk about this
- 13:26could be changed or this could be changed or this could be
- 13:27changed. I'm curious what are today's
- 13:30fans not able to see you do that you could have done with your
- 13:37with you what? How you could have displayed
- 13:38your talents 10 years ago and 15 years ago in the car.
- 13:42What? How?
- 13:43I mean, what is this Kyle Busch that that fans are seeing now
- 13:46and how much is this not the 100% Kyle Busch that that we
- 13:52could have seen 10 years ago? Is it that much difference or or
- 13:55no? No, I get what you're saying.
- 13:58I feel as though that when the teams were able to build the
- 14:01cars with the manufacturers and they were able to design them
- 14:04the way they wanted to design them, you had particular teams
- 14:06that would really focus on chassis build.
- 14:08They would work on their front clips, they'd work on their rear
- 14:10clips, they'd work on their bodies, they'd work on their
- 14:12engines. You had a lot more feasibility
- 14:15and where you wanted to dump your resources.
- 14:17Did you want super Speedway cars?
- 14:18Did you want intermediate cars? Did you want short track cars?
- 14:20Rd. course cars? You get it right.
- 14:23So now we all have the same Legos and it's just about how
- 14:26you assemble the Legos, which apparently we're not smart
- 14:29enough yet at the short track Legos to have that program
- 14:32science doubt. But you know, you you also, for
- 14:36me Anyways, I feel like the practice limitations that have
- 14:39been set forth, I don't have time to work through and dissect
- 14:44the car as much as I once did of being able to go through
- 14:47practices, look at the data, go through another practice, you
- 14:50know, go through qualifying, go through weeks of being able to
- 14:52do that to build on your program and to and to give that feedback
- 14:56to the team and the engineers and everybody back in the shop
- 14:59to make your stuff better. So I I would say that that's
- 15:02probably a a a big part of it. And forgive me, but I'll just
- 15:07talk about simulation and how far it's come and how you've
- 15:10seen it come through your years with what you talked about not
- 15:13being able to get that feel and in practice and so forth.
- 15:16Why can't that be done in simulation?
- 15:19Or where is simulation falls short that it prevents you from
- 15:22getting that or helping make you even better in a practice
- 15:25situation. I would say that there's there's
- 15:29nothing like the real thing. There's nothing like the Asphalt
- 15:33Dino, as my dad would always say, and going to the racetrack
- 15:36with your stuff and competing against the rest of the
- 15:38competitors to see where your shortcomings are.
- 15:40So, I mean, this is a dumb analogy, but the the smartest
- 15:45robot in the world will never be what a human is, You know what I
- 15:49mean? Like it takes a human to build
- 15:51that robot. So there's going to be way too
- 15:52many circumstances that would come about to make SIM life what
- 15:58real life is.
