- 0:24Speaker 2: Return to Glory podcast. Hunter Zarbnicki, Austin Rose. It's Monday morning.
- 0:28Speaker 2: We're live on YouTube. The replay can be found on YouTube,
- 0:32Speaker 2: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, anywhere you get your podcasts. Austin and
- 0:36Speaker 2: I here this morning recapping the North Dakota win 34-7.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Huskers have moved to 3-0 in non-conference play as we
- 0:49Speaker 2: head into Michigan State week here. And before we get
- 0:52Speaker 2: to any Michigan State talk, we've got to be feeling
- 0:56Speaker 2: pretty confident, right, after three games?
- 1:02Speaker 4: I feel like the way we should ask that question,
- 1:04Speaker 4: I don't know how you feel about that.
- 1:07Speaker 5: I don't know. I feel okay.
- 1:09Speaker 4: I don't know if I'd say I feel any more
- 1:11Speaker 4: confident or less confident than the other year. I can't
- 1:16Speaker 4: say the level of competition has made me expect a
- 1:24Speaker 4: different result to the Big Ten this year.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I got to remember our non-conference schedule was voted
- 1:31Speaker 2: or ranked as the easiest non-conference schedule in the country.
- 1:37Speaker 4: And we are 3-0. So that's good. You know, it
- 1:43Speaker 4: could be worse. We could have lost to one of
- 1:45Speaker 4: these teams.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Well, and I guess speaking of non-conference schedule, I don't
- 1:49Speaker 2: think we've mentioned yet the addition of North Dakota, or
- 1:54Speaker 2: North Dakota, the other ND, Notre Dame. to our schedule
- 1:58Speaker 2: here in 2023 or 2033 and 2034. Maybe it was
- 2:04Speaker 2: 32 and 33.
- 2:04Speaker 5: I think it's 32 and 33.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Uh, so yeah, we, we add an opponent here to
- 2:10Speaker 2: our non-conference schedule and I, I jokingly have been saying
- 2:16Speaker 2: it'll probably be a, they'll probably be in our conference
- 2:18Speaker 2: by that point and it'll be a non-conference game in
- 2:21Speaker 2: our conference. Uh, I mean, I think with the non-conference,
- 2:27Speaker 2: what you got to remember, especially in today's format of
- 2:31Speaker 2: the 12 team, but as the playoff probably will expand
- 2:34Speaker 2: here very shortly, we're at a point where wins on
- 2:42Speaker 2: the end card, I think, matter. And going 3-0, no
- 2:48Speaker 2: matter who you play, it's going to help. And I
- 2:53Speaker 2: guess our non-conference or our conference schedule is going to
- 2:55Speaker 2: balance our non-conference schedule. I think out a little bit
- 2:58Speaker 2: this year. And so like I, the Tennessee game was
- 3:03Speaker 2: supposed to happen this year. It didn't. And I'm completely
- 3:06Speaker 2: okay with that. Almost think of these games. They're not,
- 3:10Speaker 2: obviously not preseason games, but or exhibition games, but they are, they're, they're,
- 3:14Speaker 2: they're gear up games. They're games to hope to provide
- 3:17Speaker 2: some confidence to you and your team. Um, and learn
- 3:21Speaker 2: from the things that maybe didn't go exactly as you
- 3:24Speaker 2: were wanting them to, and then get you ready for
- 3:28Speaker 2: conference play here next week.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Yeah, the wins do matter, especially at this point of
- 3:37Speaker 4: our program. At some point, you know, you obviously want
- 3:40Speaker 4: to turn the corner and schedule some serious games.
- 3:44Speaker 5: But, you know, if your team's like, you know, Oregon,
- 3:46Speaker 5: who got– dropped from.
- 3:49Speaker 4: The one number one all the way down to I
- 3:52Speaker 4: don't remember what they're ranked this week 23 after losing
- 3:55Speaker 4: to Oklahoma State and I mean not really Oklahoma State
- 4:00Speaker 4: isn't you know Texas but Ohio State even they were
- 4:04Speaker 4: number one lost to Texas and dropped down wasn't seven
- 4:08Speaker 4: spots six spots to the number four team so I
- 4:11Speaker 4: mean and then Yeah, like you're saying, it's a 12-team format.
- 4:17Speaker 4: You just don't want to get caught having to claw back.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You want to be able to bump up and not
- 4:23Speaker 4: have to fight back from a bad loss. So I
- 4:27Speaker 4: agree with what you're saying to an extent, but then
- 4:28Speaker 4: there's also that part of me that's like, well, you
- 4:31Speaker 4: kind of want to.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Kind of like this year. It's like, I don't know.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Are we good? Are we going to have an okay year?
- 4:39Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 4:39Speaker 4: We've got three wins against three teams that were supposed to...
- 4:42Speaker 4: The spreads were all 24 points. maybe 23-point-plus spreads.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard to know. It is. It's hard to know,
- 4:53Speaker 2: and we're going to see here. I think what you
- 4:56Speaker 2: want to see is progress and improvement. You know, clean football,
- 5:00Speaker 2: we've talked about that a lot because it's something that
- 5:03Speaker 2: you can control here. It feels like that piece was good,
- 5:09Speaker 2: but again, as far as leveling talent goes– against our
- 5:14Speaker 2: next few opponents. It is. It's just hard to tell.
- 5:17Speaker 2: You can look at other teams' games against their first
- 5:21Speaker 2: three games and make some judgment assumptions. You can do
- 5:25Speaker 2: all that. It's just hard to tell.
- 5:28Speaker 4: As a fan, would you rather have three guaranteed wins
- 5:33Speaker 4: or three guaranteed wins?
- 5:36Speaker 5: You would. I don't know. I think I'd rather, I
- 5:40Speaker 5: don't know.
- 5:41Speaker 4: I would like to see us play a team that's like, Oh,
- 5:43Speaker 4: I'm actually excited about this game.
- 5:45Speaker 5: I can't say this weekend.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I was super excited about North Dakota for the, for
- 5:48Speaker 2: the outcome of the season as a fan.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:50Speaker 2: A hundred percent. Don't, don't schedule anybody. I mean, if
- 5:54Speaker 2: you're talking about an individual game and like in, in
- 5:57Speaker 2: isolation of the entire program and season, well, yeah, I'd
- 6:01Speaker 2: rather play someone fun to watch, but like, no, for the,
- 6:05Speaker 2: for the season outlook outlook, absolutely not. I, The Notre
- 6:09Speaker 2: Dame stuff, I'm not super thrilled with. Like, although it
- 6:11Speaker 2: will be fun for the season, I just, I don't
- 6:14Speaker 2: think that's a smart, I don't think it's a smart move.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And in today's current environment, now things could change in
- 6:21Speaker 2: five or six years, but. Right.
- 6:23Speaker 4: If it drops to, if it changes to 16 teams,
- 6:27Speaker 4: it's like, well, you can, one loss is expected.
- 6:31Speaker 2: One loss or maybe that one win is what, if you.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Win it, maybe that's the one that. You can be, 9-3,
- 6:38Speaker 5: but you... Yeah, you'd be 9-3, but you beat Notre
- 6:40Speaker 5: Dame in the non-con. You know, it's like, okay.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah. So it could be the reason you're out, because
- 6:48Speaker 2: you're 8-4 instead of 9-3.
- 6:49Speaker 1: No.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm torn. It's just that part of me, it's like,
- 6:55Speaker 4: I don't know. Would I have rather played at Colorado?
- 6:58Speaker 5: Probably. It's like, you know, looking back, if we had
- 7:02Speaker 5: lost to Colorado close, I don't know.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Well, I don't know that Colorado is much better.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Than No, North Dakota.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Many of these teams that we've played, Northwestern took it
- 7:14Speaker 2: to them this week. Real quick, to get us into
- 7:17Speaker 2: North Dakota here and the game itself, I haven't listened
- 7:22Speaker 2: to any recap podcasts or talk shows yet. I guess
- 7:25Speaker 2: on the way home, everybody's kind of just like, well,
- 7:29Speaker 2: what do we talk about?
- 7:29Speaker 5: I don't know. We look good against the teams that
- 7:35Speaker 5: we're supposed to beat.
- 7:36Speaker 2: It's like, let's move on. But what I did Friday,
- 7:39Speaker 2: if you listened, I did like a little three on
- 7:41Speaker 2: three or three by three bingo card and assigned points
- 7:44Speaker 2: to little things. And then based on how many points hit,
- 7:50Speaker 2: it's supposed to kind of tell you where you feel
- 7:51Speaker 2: and how you feel about the game going forward. There
- 7:54Speaker 2: were 20 total points on the board. We hit 13,
- 7:57Speaker 2: which meant the good controlled performance, right? It meant that like,
- 8:05Speaker 2: and I think that's very accurate. 20 out of 20
- 8:07Speaker 2: was like jumping on here and going nuts and going
- 8:11Speaker 2: crazy that we're winning the national title. And then right
- 8:14Speaker 2: below that was like a really dominant, confident, ready for
- 8:19Speaker 2: conference position, you know, saying we're here, we're, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 2: bring it on. And I, I, like you said, I just,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I don't know where things are at the things that hit.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I mean, and they weren't the, the bingo card was
- 8:31Speaker 2: not crazy stuff. It was stuff that you probably should do. Um,
- 8:36Speaker 2: one was Calandria having three plus total touchdowns. He had
- 8:39Speaker 2: two that technically didn't hit. Um, and then winning the
- 8:44Speaker 2: turnover margin. We didn't lose turnover margin. There just wasn't
- 8:47Speaker 2: the turnover again by either team, which kind of has
- 8:49Speaker 2: been weird. Like I feel like that's kind of how
- 8:52Speaker 2: the season's gone so far, but yeah, it didn't hit that.
- 8:55Speaker 2: And then the other one we didn't hit was, um,
- 8:57Speaker 2: a backup QB lead, the touchdown drive. Both of them
- 9:01Speaker 2: had a chance. They either had a touchdown with Lateef
- 9:03Speaker 2: and Kalen. But we got to that point. Like, it
- 9:06Speaker 2: wasn't like they didn't play. And then everything else hit. So, like,
- 9:12Speaker 2: we had five sacks, which was three-plus sacks was one
- 9:15Speaker 2: of the goals there. You know, not allowing a kickoff
- 9:18Speaker 2: return to the 35-yard line. That didn't even get close.
- 9:23Speaker 5: We did have one kicked off out of bounds.
- 9:25Speaker 2: We did have one out of bounds. That kind of,
- 9:26Speaker 2: I guess, is the 35-yard line.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Right, yeah.
- 9:31Speaker 2: North Dakota held them under five yards of play. They
- 9:34Speaker 2: were at 3.7 yards of play. We had over 200
- 9:36Speaker 2: rushing yards. So, again, things had happened, and it led
- 9:40Speaker 2: to saying it was a good, controlled performance and confident
- 9:46Speaker 2: performance against a team like North Dakota. So, big picture,
- 9:53Speaker 2: I mean, like we said, the game went really well.
- 9:57Speaker 2: We're 3-0. We outgained them 4-93. 493-205. Ran for almost
- 10:03Speaker 2: 300 yards in a game that I think there's people,
- 10:09Speaker 2: and I mean myself included, thinking, you know, North Dakota
- 10:12Speaker 2: probably the best team maybe that we've played so far
- 10:16Speaker 2: and had some, like, talented players or better players. Like,
- 10:21Speaker 2: I think you could kind of see and maybe that
- 10:25Speaker 2: if they played Ohio, I don't know. I think it
- 10:27Speaker 2: would be a good game, in my opinion. Like, I
- 10:29Speaker 2: think it would be a very close game. Ohio, I think,
- 10:33Speaker 2: probably would still win, but, like, they had some pieces,
- 10:39Speaker 2: but it was pretty clear that we were definitely the
- 10:42Speaker 2: better team at about every position.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And.
- 10:48Speaker 2: we were controlled it from start to finish.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:52Speaker 4: You know, while I was watching the game, yeah, I'm
- 10:57Speaker 4: just trying to think back to like the moments when
- 10:59Speaker 4: I was excited.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I agree.
- 11:02Speaker 4: We definitely, we, I honestly thought North Dakota didn't even
- 11:05Speaker 4: look like the best team that we played, even though
- 11:07Speaker 4: the score would reflect that.
- 11:08Speaker 5: It just kind of felt like there were times where.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I mean, you're saying Ohio, I assume.
- 11:18Speaker 4: No. You said you thought North Dakota was going to
- 11:22Speaker 4: be the best team that we played, right?
- 11:24Speaker 5: Is that what you just said?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Yeah, are you saying Ohio's better than them?
- 11:27Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 4: But, I don't know, I thought that there were times
- 11:34Speaker 4: during this game that it felt more pre-season-y than the
- 11:37Speaker 4: other two. Like, it felt like, it's like, okay, we're,
- 11:41Speaker 4: I guess, our foot was not on the pedal, it
- 11:45Speaker 4: felt like, as much as the last two games. Even
- 11:46Speaker 4: though our defense definitely was Definitely better. You know, we saw,
- 11:50Speaker 4: because you and I both talked about, and I'm sure
- 11:53Speaker 4: Dak did too, tailgate pod about wanting to see just
- 11:58Speaker 4: more pressure and getting in the backfield with our D-line.
- 12:03Speaker 5: And we did.
- 12:03Speaker 4: It definitely felt like we drew up more blitzes, which
- 12:07Speaker 4: is something I don't really feel like I saw that
- 12:09Speaker 4: much in the first two games. And we got pressure
- 12:11Speaker 4: without blitzes. But, you know, starting the fourth quarter, was
- 12:18Speaker 4: when TJ Lateef went in. I think it was like
- 12:20Speaker 4: the 13-minute work in the fourth quarter, which he didn't
- 12:23Speaker 4: go in in the first two games until, I don't know,
- 12:27Speaker 4: five minutes left in the game. You know, Danny Kalen
- 12:30Speaker 4: got playing time. We were super conservative in the fourth.
- 12:36Speaker 4: I don't know. It felt like the coaching staff had
- 12:40Speaker 4: mostly seen what they wanted to see in the first
- 12:43Speaker 4: two games. This game, they were like, let's just go
- 12:46Speaker 4: into next week healthy. We're not going to push it.
- 12:53Speaker 4: We're going to.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Give it a bunch of welcome kids snaps. I've heard
- 12:57Speaker 2: a lot of people say, man, yeah, we kept it
- 12:59Speaker 2: pretty basic, didn't we? We didn't show a whole lot.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I mean, I agree. We did. It's nice to be
- 13:08Speaker 2: able to do that again and feel that way. And
- 13:14Speaker 2: watching that game, I mean, from the way it started, right,
- 13:17Speaker 2: our first two drives, it was 14-0, just like that.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And you just felt, okay, like any maybe slight concern
- 13:26Speaker 2: that you thought North Dakota was going to come in
- 13:28Speaker 2: and do something with it, you're like, okay, nope, nope,
- 13:32Speaker 2: like we're okay. And that's just not from a fan standpoint.
- 13:36Speaker 2: That's probably from the players and coaches too, right? You're prepping,
- 13:39Speaker 2: you go, okay, like, now we, now we kind of
- 13:44Speaker 2: know that we have, we can, we can turn it
- 13:47Speaker 2: on when, when we need to. And, um, we were
- 13:51Speaker 2: able to do that. So like the two drives, like
- 13:53Speaker 2: I said, it was, it right away was, and they were,
- 13:58Speaker 2: they were 10 and 11 play drives. It wasn't like
- 14:00Speaker 2: it was an explosive play beating some guy one-on-one. It
- 14:04Speaker 2: was just, Nope. Like we're just going to dominate you.
- 14:07Speaker 2: We're going to run it right at you. And, and
- 14:09Speaker 2: we continue to do that all game long. Our, our,
- 14:13Speaker 2: second quarter drive, you know, did the same thing, but
- 14:15Speaker 2: then ended in a field goal. You know, we missed
- 14:18Speaker 2: the long, was it a 54 yard or something like that?
- 14:23Speaker 5: I think it was 55 yard. Something like that.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I just, I think that, that, that to me was
- 14:30Speaker 2: very encouraging again. And as much as you can get
- 14:34Speaker 2: gain confidence from these games, it should say, okay, like, yep.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Check that box.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean, Nothing.
- 14:46Speaker 4: The things I was thinking about in this game that
- 14:48Speaker 4: I was like, okay, if I were to nitpick this game,
- 14:51Speaker 4: where am I upset? And, you know, it was probably
- 14:56Speaker 4: mostly special teams. I thought, I don't know, I don't
- 14:59Speaker 4: think our punting, I don't think we've had a really
- 15:02Speaker 4: good punt yet this year.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Part of that's because we're scoring so much.
- 15:08Speaker 4: We've had a couple of decent returns called back on
- 15:11Speaker 4: penalties on punts. That's something that's kind of, I think
- 15:16Speaker 4: I've seen a couple times this year. And then outside
- 15:21Speaker 4: of that, I just, the only other time where I
- 15:23Speaker 4: was like, what are we doing was there was an
- 15:25Speaker 4: offensive possession where we had three plays. I think it
- 15:29Speaker 4: was in the third quarter. But we had three plays
- 15:32Speaker 4: where all of them were basically behind the line of scrimmage.
- 15:35Speaker 4: And it was like third and nine, and we threw
- 15:40Speaker 4: a screen pass, you know, another touchdown.
- 15:42Speaker 5: It was like basically three screen passes.
- 15:44Speaker 2: In a row.
- 15:45Speaker 5: And all of them, we ended up having to punt.
- 15:47Speaker 5: But I just remember being like, okay, I didn't love
- 15:49Speaker 5: that possession.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember exactly which one you're talking about.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Yeah, because it just felt weird. I was like, why
- 15:57Speaker 5: are we doing this? All of our starters are still on.
- 15:59Speaker 5: We should be able to move the ball at least forward.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Other than that, you know, like I said, takeaways... Yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 5: it was a blast. Jamal Rule.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Still looked killer, but outside of that, Landry looked fine.
- 16:19Speaker 4: He looked okay. None of the receivers... I have found
- 16:25Speaker 4: initially that this year, I feel like they're really trying
- 16:27Speaker 4: to spread the ball around.
- 16:29Speaker 5: They're not.
- 16:31Speaker 4: By the end of last year, I felt like Nysiah
- 16:32Speaker 4: Hunter was kind of the guy. It's like, oh, the
- 16:34Speaker 4: ball's going to Nysiah. And then maybe Dainty on the
- 16:38Speaker 4: fourth down this year. The first of the first three games,
- 16:41Speaker 4: I have no idea where the ball's going. I felt
- 16:43Speaker 4: like they were forcing the Isaiah Hunter issue this week. Like, Hey,
- 16:46Speaker 4: we haven't gotten the ball last two weeks. We're going
- 16:48Speaker 4: to get on the ball this week.
- 16:50Speaker 2: I I'm always very fascinated too, by that. Like even
- 16:55Speaker 2: NFL games to the, the spread the ball around and,
- 16:57Speaker 2: and like as a quarterback and an offensive coordinator, there
- 17:01Speaker 2: are a thousand percent, certain ways of designing plays and
- 17:06Speaker 2: schemes to like, get balls into certain guys' hands. There's
- 17:12Speaker 2: also a matter of like using guys as decoys and
- 17:15Speaker 2: disguises if you have other guys too. Then there's also
- 17:19Speaker 2: the component of quarterbacks having just guys they feel comfortable
- 17:23Speaker 2: throwing to and guys they like throwing to. So that's
- 17:25Speaker 2: their first or second or third read within a combo.
- 17:30Speaker 2: So like, yeah, it's interesting to see who gets targeted
- 17:36Speaker 2: a lot more than others. Like I said, like we said, though,
- 17:42Speaker 2: it's hard to even know if that's what we're going
- 17:45Speaker 2: to see moving forward or if that's just what we're
- 17:47Speaker 2: given here on our games in these first three games
- 17:50Speaker 2: and we're going to go with that. Like, it will be.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It'll be interesting moving forward. And we got a touchdown
- 17:57Speaker 2: also by all the tall, skinny dude.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Quinn Clark.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Quinn Clark. You know, he caught one here this game
- 18:06Speaker 2: as well. So, like, that was a good sign from
- 18:10Speaker 2: a depth perspective at receiver. It is. It's interesting to see.
- 18:14Speaker 2: You mentioned, like, these are some of my takeaways, like,
- 18:17Speaker 2: from the game. None of it's going to be too surprising.
- 18:22Speaker 2: You mentioned about Jamal Rule, like, I'm going to go
- 18:25Speaker 2: deeper in this tomorrow. But, like, he had another damn
- 18:28Speaker 2: good game as a freshman.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:31Speaker 2: He came out in the second half, obviously, with the
- 18:33Speaker 2: first carry of the second half and took it to
- 18:34Speaker 2: the house. So, you know, he's proving that he's a
- 18:39Speaker 2: very good back and ready for Big Ten play. And
- 18:43Speaker 2: my biggest thing, and North Dakota said it too, and
- 18:47Speaker 2: this isn't new, we have committed strongly to the run
- 18:53Speaker 2: game here.
- 18:53Speaker 5: That's right.
- 18:55Speaker 2: This year. Again, following last year's team, last year definitely
- 18:59Speaker 2: was a big shift in focus to making that part
- 19:02Speaker 2: of our identity that we have to be able to
- 19:05Speaker 2: run the ball well. No matter who we're playing, what
- 19:10Speaker 2: the time and situation is, we have to be able
- 19:13Speaker 2: to do that. And we did that again from the get-go.
- 19:17Speaker 2: We're not trying to come out and be cute. Besides,
- 19:20Speaker 2: you said that one drive, which I remember that drive.
- 19:22Speaker 2: It was a swing that was weird. But we have
- 19:27Speaker 2: showed that that is where we want to establish ourselves,
- 19:31Speaker 2: which is, to me, very encouraging.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 4: It is encouraging. Now it gets three opponents that we
- 19:40Speaker 4: can run the ball on easily. We'll see how it
- 19:42Speaker 4: works out. Cause I said, we've run the ball really well.
- 19:45Speaker 4: It's last three guys.
- 19:46Speaker 5: Who knows?
- 19:47Speaker 4: We come big 10. Half it's Gerald knows that Nebraska
- 19:51Speaker 4: wants to run the ball. It's, you know, three times
- 19:55Speaker 4: they have bodies that can actually stop the run. And
- 19:57Speaker 4: then we'll see what happens. You know, like we didn't
- 19:59Speaker 4: see Calandria around at this, which again, like I understand
- 20:02Speaker 4: why it's like, Oh, like, you know, we don't want
- 20:05Speaker 4: to get hurt.
- 20:05Speaker 5: I don't want to show too much.
- 20:08Speaker 2: And it's one of those things that, what do you
- 20:09Speaker 2: want to show?
- 20:10Speaker 5: Right?
- 20:10Speaker 2: Like it, I think I talked about this before the
- 20:15Speaker 2: bowling green game. Are we good enough to like have
- 20:19Speaker 2: those thoughts as a coaching staff and players of, Hey,
- 20:21Speaker 2: let's keep it basic. And, or do we need to
- 20:25Speaker 2: go out and try to win the game? Well, I
- 20:27Speaker 2: think when you show what you did in the first
- 20:28Speaker 2: two drives, yeah. Like the Calandria run game, if that's
- 20:32Speaker 2: something that you're planning on doing, which I sure as
- 20:37Speaker 2: hell hope it is like, make teams keep thinking about
- 20:42Speaker 2: it or maybe not thinking about it and overlooking it
- 20:45Speaker 2: to where on Saturday against Michigan state, you could, you
- 20:50Speaker 2: can scheme something up that we really haven't shown yet.
- 20:52Speaker 2: And there to go there, there's a, there's a 30
- 20:54Speaker 2: yard run by Calandria. Like we haven't seen that. Is
- 20:58Speaker 2: it coming? I, like I said, I hope so. We
- 21:00Speaker 2: don't know though, cause we haven't shown it, which is
- 21:01Speaker 2: maybe part of the plan. I don't know.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I think, well, I think, you know, They showed
- 21:08Speaker 4: what they wanted to show in Bowling Green. So they're like,
- 21:10Speaker 4: I feel like they're making them watch. You have to
- 21:12Speaker 4: watch all three games to kind of get an idea
- 21:14Speaker 4: of some of the things that we might do, which
- 21:17Speaker 4: is smart. But for the most part, I don't think
- 21:20Speaker 4: they're doing it. We're doing anything that we're not fine
- 21:24Speaker 4: putting on tape. Like the heavy package where we bring
- 21:28Speaker 4: in William and. Oh, is it Anthony Jones? I don't
- 21:35Speaker 4: remember who the other defensive guys that we bring in
- 21:37Speaker 4: for the power run, short yardage. I think they're fine
- 21:41Speaker 4: showing that as many times as they want to because
- 21:42Speaker 4: the purpose of that is you're not going to be
- 21:45Speaker 4: able to stop it because we're just going to body you. But, yeah,
- 21:55Speaker 4: it was fine. We look okay. I am excited for
- 21:59Speaker 4: Big Ten play. I could say that. Halfway through this game,
- 22:04Speaker 4: I was like, I want us to play a team
- 22:05Speaker 4: where I'm actually like, oh.
- 22:08Speaker 5: I don't want us to lose, and I.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Don't want us to be challenged, but I want to
- 22:10Speaker 4: feel better about the win than what I have basically
- 22:13Speaker 4: the last two weeks.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I felt like the college football schedule, like I enjoy
- 22:19Speaker 2: kind of how the seat, like everybody else has kind
- 22:21Speaker 2: of gotten some tests, and you get some conference games
- 22:24Speaker 2: sprinkled in here or there. And we've been a part
- 22:27Speaker 2: of those in the past. And I mean, even last
- 22:30Speaker 2: year play Cincinnati first game, bigger game. It'd be kind
- 22:33Speaker 2: of fun to like sit back and not be super
- 22:37Speaker 2: stressed or like overly thoughtful about a game and especially
- 22:42Speaker 2: an outcome and just kind of watch, see how things
- 22:45Speaker 2: are going in, in, in the rest of the country
- 22:47Speaker 2: and where things are at. And then now kind of,
- 22:50Speaker 2: you're right now, now it's not ready. Let's, let's turn
- 22:54Speaker 2: it on. Like it, it's right. It, I don't want
- 22:56Speaker 2: to compare it to NFL preseason, but I feel like
- 22:58Speaker 2: we just played a three-game preseason schedule, and now it's
- 23:02Speaker 2: like week one. And the three-game preseason schedule matters from like,
- 23:06Speaker 2: I want to see what we got, I want to
- 23:07Speaker 2: see what we're kind of doing, I want to see personnel.
- 23:10Speaker 2: And then week one, boom, the record starts. And here
- 23:14Speaker 2: we are with that. And yes, we should never take
- 23:17Speaker 2: wins for granted, but 3-0 was.
- 23:22Speaker 5: Almost a guarantee.
- 23:24Speaker 2: If you would ask any Husker fan, that was happening
- 23:28Speaker 2: in their brain.
- 23:28Speaker 5: If we lost any of these games, Matt Rule's seat
- 23:32Speaker 5: is hot, hot, hot.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Right. Now we get a seat. Now we start it.
- 23:41Speaker 2: The other thought I had with watching some games this week,
- 23:45Speaker 2: and NFL games too, Rule mentioned, I think it was Rule,
- 23:49Speaker 2: maybe it was somebody else on the radio I was
- 23:50Speaker 2: listening to, They talked about how football is different. Actually, yeah,
- 23:57Speaker 2: this was Tommy Armstrong talked about it on the recap.
- 24:00Speaker 2: These games are great, right? You get to see and
- 24:04Speaker 2: when will we actually know and tell progress. It's that
- 24:10Speaker 2: late October, early November stretch when it's different. It's cold.
- 24:15Speaker 2: There's injuries. People are banged up. You're in the meat
- 24:19Speaker 2: of Big Ten play. You're playing– opponents, tough opponents. And
- 24:23Speaker 2: I think that stretch for us is that Washington-Illinois record
- 24:27Speaker 2: stretch there. I think people kind of are not accepting
- 24:32Speaker 2: a loss that some of these other games, because they're
- 24:34Speaker 2: definitely winnable, but those are the games that are going
- 24:39Speaker 2: to define this season, this schedule, and no one's going
- 24:42Speaker 2: to look back and remember, oh man, we won these
- 24:44Speaker 2: first three games 34-7, and 56 to set like people
- 24:50Speaker 2: aren't going to really remember that they're going to remember
- 24:52Speaker 2: what we do in late october early november and football
- 24:55Speaker 2: is just different than it's it's like watching the nfl
- 24:58Speaker 2: these games and i'm like man remember these playoff games
- 25:02Speaker 2: that are freezing cold like we're so far from that
- 25:04Speaker 2: in the weather calendar in the schedule but we'll get
- 25:07Speaker 2: there right now people are playing in really pretty good
- 25:12Speaker 2: conditions well outside of the the games that were rainy
- 25:15Speaker 2: all day but it's just different football when it gets
- 25:18Speaker 2: to that point. And so like, I think that's a
- 25:20Speaker 2: very good thought and thing to remember. And I guess
- 25:24Speaker 2: it starts here, Michigan state. It looks like the weather
- 25:26Speaker 2: is going to be about perfect out, out in East Lansing.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I guess as a kind of shift has the
- 25:36Speaker 5: rest of the season from the other team's perspective, changed
- 25:40Speaker 5: your outlook on our team.
- 25:42Speaker 4: I know, you know, you look at the teams that
- 25:44Speaker 4: we were supposed to play and, Indiana got off to
- 25:48Speaker 4: a slow start down and taking care of business, but, um,
- 25:52Speaker 4: you know, Illinois, they've lost one. Oregon's lost one. Obviously
- 25:56Speaker 4: they killed Portland state last week.
- 26:00Speaker 5: As expected, as expected.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Dylan or 11 for 11, three tutties or whatever it.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Was negative seven rushing yards.
- 26:08Speaker 5: So that's true. You're right. Um, Yeah, I don't know.
- 26:16Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 26:17Speaker 4: It's been interesting. I think I feel better about this season,
- 26:22Speaker 4: but Iowa has looked.
- 26:24Speaker 5: I.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Mean, I thought they were going to be a playoff team,
- 26:27Speaker 4: so I guess they've looked about what I thought they'd
- 26:29Speaker 4: look like, but they've looked decent.
- 26:32Speaker 2: And yeah, I guess circling all the way back to
- 26:34Speaker 2: the top, that's where the word confidence comes into me.
- 26:38Speaker 2: You kind of get the schedule, you look at the
- 26:39Speaker 2: rest of the year. You shouldn't feel... head over heels
- 26:44Speaker 2: for this team by any means. I don't think anybody should,
- 26:46Speaker 2: but you got, you got to feel pretty good about
- 26:49Speaker 2: where things have sat through three games that just take
- 26:52Speaker 2: away what you want from it, given who it was and, and,
- 26:56Speaker 2: and let's see, let's see where things are at here
- 26:59Speaker 2: this week. I did book some last minute tickets yesterday and,
- 27:03Speaker 2: and we're heading, we're heading to East Lansing.
- 27:07Speaker 5: So what was your other road game going to be
- 27:11Speaker 5: this year?
- 27:12Speaker 2: Rutgers? I was going to go Oregon.
- 27:15Speaker 5: Oh, that's right.
- 27:18Speaker 2: But this one, a little more affordable. I, I did
- 27:23Speaker 2: say I will go to every road game until we lose.
- 27:26Speaker 2: So like if we're six and oh, if we beat
- 27:29Speaker 2: Indiana at home.
- 27:32Speaker 4: There you go. Like the ambition. Uh, uh, I don't
- 27:41Speaker 4: think you're going to go to every road game. I'm
- 27:43Speaker 4: just going to put it that way.
- 27:47Speaker 2: All the way up until we're 17-0 and playing in
- 27:49Speaker 2: the national championship. Or 16-0. Whatever that record is.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Out of the years to try to go to every
- 27:58Speaker 4: road game, you know, outside of Oregon, it's been rough.
- 28:02Speaker 2: It's not a matter of going to every road game
- 28:04Speaker 2: this year. It's a matter of winning a lot of games.
- 28:09Speaker 2: That's what it is.
- 28:11Speaker 5: If we beat number five, Indiana, I don't play before
- 28:14Speaker 5: I go to Oregon. Oh yeah.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Here's our schedule this week. We'll I'll be back tomorrow
- 28:21Speaker 2: doing a little solo script dive. And then Dak Wednesday,
- 28:24Speaker 2: as usual, Austin and Dak will do the, I'll be
- 28:27Speaker 2: traveling Thursday. So they will have their, the Thursday preview.
- 28:32Speaker 2: And then I'll do my preview on Friday with hopefully
- 28:35Speaker 2: a couple of special guests that I'm traveling with.
- 28:38Speaker 5: So, I haven't even looked. What's our opening line for
- 28:43Speaker 5: Michigan State?
- 28:44Speaker 2: I believe we're at like 4.5 is what I saw yesterday.
- 28:49Speaker 4: ESPN has us at 5.5.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Money's coming in on the Oscars already.
- 28:55Speaker 5: Over or under 52.5.
- 28:56Speaker 4: I don't even know. I haven't looked at Michigan State
- 29:05Speaker 4: yet this year. I know they lost last week.
- 29:11Speaker 2: All right. Well, Big Ten play is here.
- 29:16Speaker 5: It's finally happening. GVR.
- 29:22Speaker 1: The headlines change, but the mission stays. From Memorial Stadium
- 29:26Speaker 1: to PBA days.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Football Saturdays, basketball nights.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Every story chasing red and white.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Recruiting buzz, big time commits. Camp battles, coaching hits.
