Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / HALOS HIT WALL: Sunday's injury marred loss takes edge off solid homestand
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, Hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo territory.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I Mike D.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Giovanni, former La Times Baseball writer and host of the show,
- 0:16Speaker 1: joined by Mark Trumbo, my regular co host, the former
- 0:19Speaker 1: Angels slugger Well. A tough lost Sunday for the Halos
- 0:23Speaker 1: took the edge off what was a pretty good homestand
- 0:26Speaker 1: in which the Angels won two out of three from
- 0:28Speaker 1: both the Astros and Rays one day after an eight
- 0:32Speaker 1: nothing when that Joe Adell called the team's most complete
- 0:35Speaker 1: game of the season. The Angels and Rays were tied
- 0:38Speaker 1: three to three in the eighth on Sunday, they hand
- 0:41Speaker 1: the ball to Sam Bachman, which seemed like a wise move.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Bachman had not given up a run in thirteen innings
- 0:48Speaker 1: of twelve appearances since May tenth. The right hander gives
- 0:53Speaker 1: up five runs on four hits. The Angels lose eight
- 0:56Speaker 1: to three. There was a lead off walk with which
- 1:00Speaker 1: never seems good, a two run homer by a junior
- 1:03Speaker 1: Cameron Aro, Blasio's double, Faduccio RBI single, and a Mason
- 1:08Speaker 1: Junior two run homer.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Mark Man. What happened to Sam Bachman today?
- 1:15Speaker 3: Just wasn't his day.
- 1:16Speaker 4: I don't think there's anything to really look into beyond
- 1:19Speaker 4: having a dot of an outing. They seemed to be,
- 1:25Speaker 4: for whatever reason, an offense. Their offense really hadn't clicked
- 1:29Speaker 4: most of the series. When they got rallies going, at
- 1:33Speaker 4: times they grounded into a double play, were unable to
- 1:36Speaker 4: get the big hit when needed. I didn't really see
- 1:38Speaker 4: much of the small ball that they are known for either,
- 1:43Speaker 4: so up until that point their offense really hadn't been
- 1:46Speaker 4: very impressive. But unfortunately for Bachman, the mistakes he did
- 1:49Speaker 4: make were punished. Some of his off speed got hit
- 1:52Speaker 4: really hard and he kind of had to wear it.
- 1:55Speaker 4: They were thin on pitching with yesterday. Jose Soriano on
- 2:00Speaker 4: Saturday going five inning, seventy six pitches, coming out with
- 2:05Speaker 4: tightness in his leg I believe in an effort to
- 2:09Speaker 4: get away from that comebacker that ended up striking him
- 2:12Speaker 4: in the chest. So that made the bullpen work harder
- 2:16Speaker 4: on Saturday night, and then on Sunday, Grayson Rodriguez leaving
- 2:20Speaker 4: what was that in the second and.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Third inning looked really awkward on a change up to
- 2:26Speaker 1: Cedric Mullins hit him with a pitch to load the
- 2:29Speaker 1: bases with no outs, and he came out of the game.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Now was announced that during the game that it was
- 2:36Speaker 1: lower back nightness. Rodriguez said afterward that the injury is
- 2:40Speaker 1: quote not too concerning right now. I mean, obviously I'm
- 2:44Speaker 1: concerned because I came out of the game for it,
- 2:47Speaker 1: but it's just going to be something that we're going
- 2:49Speaker 1: to have to manage over the next couple of days
- 2:51Speaker 1: to be able to get back out there. Now, Mark,
- 2:55Speaker 1: considering Grayson's injury history with his arm, especially, is this
- 3:00Speaker 1: a little more concerning.
- 3:01Speaker 2: That maybe the Angels might be letting on.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Speculating, but a fair amount of concern that there might
- 3:10Speaker 4: be at least one start up and up in the air.
- 3:14Speaker 4: It could be as minor as he says, but anything
- 3:16Speaker 4: with the back, and I know from personal experience, things
- 3:20Speaker 4: can It's a tough one. How much discomfort he was
- 3:26Speaker 4: in I don't know, but he is a tough guy,
- 3:29Speaker 4: so I'm going to assume it was quite uncomfortable. I
- 3:31Speaker 4: think it was really worrisome watching that last pitch because
- 3:34Speaker 4: it was so offline. It really didn't look right at all,
- 3:37Speaker 4: And immediately I said it could be a lat thing,
- 3:39Speaker 4: could be who knows. The back wouldn't have been my
- 3:43Speaker 4: first or second guess, But I guess in the grand
- 3:49Speaker 4: scheme of things, it's not the elbow, it's not the shoulder.
- 3:51Speaker 4: So let's hope that probably a little spasm that they
- 3:56Speaker 4: can get under control pretty quickly and maybe not missus.
- 4:00Speaker 3: But if he does have to miss one, not the.
- 4:02Speaker 4: End of the world.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 1: When I saw the pitch, the pronation of the arm,
- 4:07Speaker 1: or the changeup, my first thought was what happened with
- 4:09Speaker 1: Jack Ahonowitz. He was throwing ninety eight ninety nine, felt
- 4:12Speaker 1: fine physically, the change up feels a little weird boom.
- 4:16Speaker 1: He's having Tommy John surgery, so that was my immediate concern.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean for a big guy like him,
- 4:22Speaker 1: lower back is never a good thing. The Angels already
- 4:27Speaker 1: are ready without you, say Kakuchi, Jack k is out now.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Tommy John. Sam Alde Gary did a pretty nice job
- 4:34Speaker 1: filling in on the rotation spot in his first start.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Who if there is a need for a fifth starter,
- 4:40Speaker 1: if Creation does have to do it, maybe a short
- 4:43Speaker 1: Eyele Snint who would join Urania, det merse In, Siano
- 4:49Speaker 1: and Alde Gary in rotation.
- 4:52Speaker 2: You think they'll have to go to the minor leagues
- 4:53Speaker 2: for that one.
- 4:56Speaker 3: As far as opposed to one of their went out
- 5:00Speaker 3: of the bolt.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess it'd be Mitch Ferris. Maybe you still
- 5:05Speaker 1: have the possibility.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Do think that, and I think he's doing quite well there,
- 5:13Speaker 4: so it's kind of like you know that, Well, it's
- 5:16Speaker 4: exactly like what we talked about with Red last year.
- 5:20Speaker 4: So Caiten Dana had to pour out in today for
- 5:22Speaker 4: Salt Lake and still gonna need to see more out
- 5:25Speaker 4: of him. One of our regular listeners was asking why
- 5:29Speaker 4: not Tyler Bremner, and I had a number of reasons why,
- 5:33Speaker 4: but he I think he gave up three runs today.
- 5:36Speaker 4: He's still on a very limited pitch count, very limited
- 5:39Speaker 4: so I've yet to see anything touching five six innings
- 5:42Speaker 4: of work, So that's a no. And Ryan Johnson, I
- 5:45Speaker 4: admittedly need to look a little bit closer. I don't
- 5:48Speaker 4: know double A. I believe and hopefully he's doing well
- 5:52Speaker 4: and he has major league experience, so we'll see what
- 5:55Speaker 4: they do.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Angels lost another player to injury during Sunday's game
- 6:00Speaker 1: when Wade Meckler crashed into the left center field wall
- 6:03Speaker 1: while pursuing Ben Williamson's fourth inning home run. Meckler took
- 6:08Speaker 1: his bat in the bottom of the fourth, but he
- 6:11Speaker 1: left in the top of the fifth, and he said
- 6:13Speaker 1: after the game that he came out as a concussion
- 6:16Speaker 1: percussion and that he's fine. So good news on that front.
- 6:21Speaker 1: But man Mark, that warning track didn't seem to give
- 6:24Speaker 1: mec a good a very good warning on that play.
- 6:27Speaker 2: You played left field.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And it's does that wall just sometimes come up a
- 6:32Speaker 1: little quicker than you expect when you're you got your
- 6:34Speaker 1: eye on the ball and you're in pursuit.
- 6:38Speaker 3: He's the guy that goes all out.
- 6:39Speaker 4: We saw it the first game, crashed into the lower
- 6:43Speaker 4: wall down the line making a nice play.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Today he's it's as if it's.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Not there almost, uh, which you love, you love to
- 6:52Speaker 4: see it until Yeah, So that that is appears to
- 6:58Speaker 4: be his brand of baseball. And obviously he got his
- 7:02Speaker 4: bell rung and they're going to have to go through
- 7:04Speaker 4: some of the protocols. Hopefully not that big a deal.
- 7:07Speaker 4: But those walls, I'll tell you that there's patting there,
- 7:10Speaker 4: but it doesn't do much.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Yeah, you will feel it.
- 7:14Speaker 1: They were saying on the broadcast, and I think this
- 7:16Speaker 1: is true going back a lot of years.
- 7:18Speaker 3: The wall does give.
- 7:19Speaker 2: In certain areas. But where there are the pillars.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Behind the wall and you know, the uprights to hold
- 7:25Speaker 1: the wall, it does not give it all.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And man, he hit them the wrong spot. Well.
- 7:29Speaker 1: On the plus side, Donovan Walton hit his first home
- 7:32Speaker 1: run as an Angel on Sunday. That was one of
- 7:35Speaker 1: two runs that Halos scored in the fifth game, fifth
- 7:38Speaker 1: inning to tie the game. He also went three for
- 7:40Speaker 1: four with two RBIs and Saturday Nights win. And he's
- 7:44Speaker 1: hitting up pretty tidy two ninety six with a seven
- 7:47Speaker 1: to fifty nine OPS in eighteen games. Now von Grissom
- 7:51Speaker 1: we here is about to start a rehab assignment. He's
- 7:53Speaker 1: on the il, but his Donovan Walton earned a spot here,
- 7:58Speaker 1: maybe not to stay, but certainly to.
- 8:02Speaker 2: To uh, you know, survive. Bon Grissom coming back.
- 8:08Speaker 4: It's a question for someone else in the words of
- 8:11Speaker 4: someone else, but I they have a lot of guys
- 8:15Speaker 4: that are contributing that. Arguably Nick Madrigal is contributing, was
- 8:20Speaker 4: a serious contributing. Trey Mancini is contributing, Yeah, and you're
- 8:24Speaker 4: gonna need to find a way to and Walton is
- 8:26Speaker 4: as well. A nice home run today. He's looked not
- 8:29Speaker 4: overmatched at all, he's put some nice at bats together.
- 8:32Speaker 4: His defense looks good. So if they're committed, now, what
- 8:35Speaker 4: are they going to do at third base? Is Guzman
- 8:38Speaker 4: going to get extended?
- 8:39Speaker 3: Look?
- 8:40Speaker 4: It appears so with with that are going to come
- 8:43Speaker 4: some some plays like the bunt that he picked up
- 8:46Speaker 4: that was about to roll foul, and there's going to
- 8:49Speaker 4: be some other ones. It's it's inevitable. He's a very
- 8:51Speaker 4: young kid. He's he's learning at the big league level.
- 8:55Speaker 4: He's definitely got a lot of bat speed though. The
- 8:58Speaker 4: tool the tools are there. It's just a matter of
- 9:00Speaker 4: putting it together and hopefully having you know, maybe a
- 9:04Speaker 4: guy like Peroza can really help him out. I don't
- 9:07Speaker 4: know if they have a bond, but I would assume
- 9:11Speaker 4: he'd be a good guy to lean on for any questions,
- 9:13Speaker 4: at least when it comes to defense.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought you had a couple of pretty good,
- 9:18Speaker 1: big clutch hits over the weekend. And he made a
- 9:21Speaker 1: really nice stop of a double play ball or to
- 9:24Speaker 1: start a double play on Sunday. The ball looked like
- 9:26Speaker 1: it took it was like one hundred miles an hour
- 9:28Speaker 1: plus off the bat, almost took a funny hop off
- 9:31Speaker 1: the end, but he stuck with it and started a
- 9:33Speaker 1: double play. We're going to take a quick break for
- 9:36Speaker 1: a word from our sponsors, and when we come back,
- 9:39Speaker 1: we're going to talk a little bit about this very
- 9:42Speaker 1: much more diverse Angel offense.
- 9:44Speaker 2: We'll be right back to Marklo Territory.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Crouch.
- 9:49Speaker 5: You know, I travel all the time and I'm always
- 9:51Speaker 5: looking for possible tickets to go see advanced concerts MLB games.
- 9:55Speaker 3: When I do, I always find seakeek.
- 9:57Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm not traveling so pretty much. I'm looking for
- 10:00Speaker 6: the games all in my area. I'm gonna look for
- 10:02Speaker 6: an Orioles game. I'm gonna look for the Phillies game,
- 10:05Speaker 6: the Mets game, the Yankees game. But you know what
- 10:08Speaker 6: else is coming up? The All Star Game. See Gek's
- 10:11Speaker 6: got me.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Hey, you're gonna need them tickets for the All Star Game.

- 10:49Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 10:51Speaker 1: Mike d. Giovanna will Mark God for weeks. We all
- 10:55Speaker 1: we talked, not all we talked about, but a lot
- 10:57Speaker 1: of what we talked about from the offensive side was
- 10:59Speaker 1: the three true outcomes, the home run, the strikeout, the walk.
- 11:04Speaker 1: The strikeouts continue for the most part, the walks.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Not so much.
- 11:10Speaker 1: But in twelve games in June, the Angels are batting
- 11:15Speaker 1: two sixty six with a seven forty oh ps. They've
- 11:19Speaker 1: scored sixty eight runs in those games, an average of
- 11:22Speaker 1: five point four a game, and they hit only nine
- 11:25Speaker 1: home runs in that span. They've been doing a much
- 11:28Speaker 1: better job of battling with two strikes, putting the ball
- 11:31Speaker 1: in play, putting together more rallies where they're combining some
- 11:35Speaker 1: walks some singles, putting pressure on the defense. Clutch hits.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Run isn't scoring position, not relying so much on the
- 11:42Speaker 1: home run, more on some timely hitting mark. You like
- 11:45Speaker 1: what you're seeing a little more out of this offense
- 11:47Speaker 1: right now?
- 11:50Speaker 3: How can you not?
- 11:51Speaker 2: Yea, how can you not?
- 11:52Speaker 4: I think that the fans, I assume are liking what
- 11:55Speaker 4: they're seeing. It's led to better results. There's one in
- 11:59Speaker 4: particular that doesn't seem to be buying in, but everyone
- 12:02Speaker 4: else seems to be doing their part and taking, you know,
- 12:07Speaker 4: going with the pitch. On the broadcast today, they said
- 12:09Speaker 4: that it's been a much more enjoyable product. The fans
- 12:13Speaker 4: are really enjoying it, which I don't know. The enthusiasm
- 12:17Speaker 4: was there in the beginning of the year as well,
- 12:20Speaker 4: watching and I'm not sure if what we were told
- 12:24Speaker 4: is true or it was hard to really make sense
- 12:28Speaker 4: of all of it because this is an entirely different
- 12:30Speaker 4: team than the one that broke camp, which was almost
- 12:35Speaker 4: entirely reliant on what you're talking about. I mean, was
- 12:39Speaker 4: sitting around waiting for a big home run? Was it
- 12:42Speaker 4: going to come? If they didn't hit a home run,
- 12:44Speaker 4: they didn't win a lot of games. And now you
- 12:46Speaker 4: have the ability to manufacture some runs. We're seeing some
- 12:49Speaker 4: sack bunts. It seems like a definite shift. We've covered
- 12:53Speaker 4: it a little bit before, but this is not the
- 12:55Speaker 4: same offense at all. Why and how don't have a
- 12:59Speaker 4: real answer other than you know, what we do know
- 13:02Speaker 4: is the player personnel has changed. It changed drastically, and
- 13:06Speaker 4: we have you know, we're looking at different guys that
- 13:08Speaker 4: do different things. Moncado, Solaire, et cetera.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Not not out.
- 13:13Speaker 4: There guys like Neckler and Walton and et cetera. We've
- 13:19Speaker 4: talked about a lot of these guys. They they may
- 13:21Speaker 4: not have as much power, but they're more competitive, especially
- 13:25Speaker 4: with two strikes.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Totally agree. I think it's a classic addition by some traction.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I think when Moncata got hurt, that was the first domino,
- 13:35Speaker 1: and then when Solaire went down. I mean, I did
- 13:39Speaker 1: think Moncatta did battle more in the box and then
- 13:44Speaker 1: maybe we give him credit for but I think his
- 13:46Speaker 1: overall play, his weak defense is lack of hustle just
- 13:49Speaker 1: kind of brought the team down. And then Solaire was
- 13:52Speaker 1: he's just he's most of his career he's been a
- 13:55Speaker 1: classic all or nothing guy and he just you know,
- 13:58Speaker 1: when he hit some you know, one hundred and twelve
- 14:01Speaker 1: off the bat. You know, four hundred and thirty feet
- 14:04Speaker 1: their majestic, but it's so rare when he gets a
- 14:06Speaker 1: hold of them. And yeah, I think the change of personnel,
- 14:09Speaker 1: the guys they've brought in, and you mentioned Jose Sirian,
- 14:12Speaker 1: I have to give him credit. I don't know this
- 14:14Speaker 1: guy very well.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I didn't. I knew he was.
- 14:17Speaker 1: A really good defensive player, but just having been around
- 14:20Speaker 1: to a couple of games this back past week, he's
- 14:23Speaker 1: a really fun loving guy in the clubhouse. He brings
- 14:26Speaker 1: an energy that maybe they lacked in the beginning of
- 14:30Speaker 1: the year. I think the battling in the in the
- 14:34Speaker 1: box of Madrigals, especially Meckler Walton has put together a
- 14:41Speaker 1: lot of good at bats, and you know, Parazza and
- 14:45Speaker 1: some of these guys have been doing all year. I've
- 14:47Speaker 1: seen Joe Adell go opposite field.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Now, I was.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Gonna say, Joe red hot getting over four hundred and
- 14:54Speaker 4: his last seven and drawing some interest as well.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we'll get to that in a little bit.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Uh and Mike Trout, you know they didn't win today.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I thought his double to right center I think was
- 15:07Speaker 1: the lead off the eighth man. That's the kind of
- 15:09Speaker 1: a bag.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Just did you just say that extra velocity?
- 15:14Speaker 2: I did not see it. What was it? It was?
- 15:18Speaker 3: He smoked it. He smoked it.
- 15:20Speaker 4: But the thing that continues to impress me about Mike,
- 15:23Speaker 4: I mean, he had some they were dinkers. He didn't
- 15:28Speaker 4: infield dribblers, but busted it down the line. And I
- 15:34Speaker 4: We're going to get to what I'm kind of alluding
- 15:37Speaker 4: to soon enough, But why why that's not done by
- 15:42Speaker 4: everyone or one in particular. Mike Trout can do it,
- 15:45Speaker 4: everyone can do it.
- 15:46Speaker 3: I agree.
- 15:47Speaker 1: We'll get to Mark's favorite shortstop in a little bit,
- 15:49Speaker 1: But first I did want to talk about Friday Night's game,
- 15:52Speaker 1: which was pretty crazy. As I said, they got a
- 15:54Speaker 1: really nice start from sam Ald Gary. He gave up
- 15:57Speaker 1: one earned run and three hits in five inning. Silseth
- 16:00Speaker 1: throws a scoreless six. Then Mitch Ferris enters the game
- 16:04Speaker 1: in the seventh, and he pitched the seventh, and he
- 16:07Speaker 1: pitched the eighth, and the ninth inning starts in Bachmann
- 16:11Speaker 1: and Zephyr John. I believe we're still in the bullpen
- 16:14Speaker 1: and out comes Mitch Ferris and he I think he
- 16:18Speaker 1: gave up a run. The Rays cut the deficit the
- 16:21Speaker 1: four to three, they finally go to Zephyr John, and
- 16:24Speaker 1: as it turns out, we find out after the game
- 16:26Speaker 1: that Sam bok Zuke wanted to give Sam Bachman one more.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Day arrests after the off day.
- 16:32Speaker 1: So Zephyr John loads the bases with a walk to
- 16:34Speaker 1: Cameron Aro strikeouts, strikes out Mullins for the team's first
- 16:39Speaker 1: save since May twenty third. I was done when Ferris
- 16:46Speaker 1: walked out for the ninth thing? What were you surprised
- 16:49Speaker 1: he stayed with Mitch as long as he did?
- 16:54Speaker 3: Honestly? Not really?
- 16:55Speaker 2: Oh really? Why is that?
- 16:58Speaker 4: I can't make any more sense the next guy out
- 17:00Speaker 4: of There's don't appear to be really any defined roles.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Who's closing Zephyr John? Maybe question Mark? I think that
- 17:13Speaker 4: right now it's you know, going extended Innians with Ferris,
- 17:19Speaker 4: with Suitter, with Natara. It seems like that's kind of
- 17:24Speaker 4: what the game plan actually is. Not to say it's
- 17:27Speaker 4: not working. It seems to actually be working. So if
- 17:31Speaker 4: you've got a guy that's doing well, logically you just
- 17:37Speaker 4: leave him in yeah, and leave him until he runs
- 17:39Speaker 4: out of gas. The downside is if a guy throws
- 17:43Speaker 4: three innings and accumulates forty something pitches fifty by who knows.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Hopefully it's lower than that, but they're going to need.
- 17:50Speaker 2: A rest and more than one day.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Your Pomerants and Kirby Yates are still on the older side,
- 17:58Speaker 4: so they're not going to be and unfortunately it looks
- 18:00Speaker 4: like Bachman they're kind of handling with kid gloves as well,
- 18:03Speaker 4: probably due to the injury history. So you got three
- 18:07Speaker 4: guys that you're going to really need to look after,
- 18:09Speaker 4: and they're not really They're in need of that rubber
- 18:12Speaker 4: arm side arm YadA YadA guy that can throw a ton,
- 18:16Speaker 4: and I don't really think they have one right now,
- 18:19Speaker 4: and long relief type, so we'll have to see what
- 18:23Speaker 4: they do. But there might be some instances where they
- 18:26Speaker 4: need to cover quite a few innings and only a
- 18:29Speaker 4: couple of arms to do it.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we I didn't want to let the show go
- 18:33Speaker 1: by without bringing up Sammy to Terra's funny. Mark mentioned
- 18:36Speaker 1: this guy in spring training as a guy to look
- 18:39Speaker 1: out for, and he's he's throwing four and two thirds
- 18:41Speaker 1: scoreless in his first couple of outings.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Mark impressed you so far.
- 18:47Speaker 4: I think he's impressed everyone. I think he looks like
- 18:51Speaker 4: a guy that is a nice piece. He fits the
- 18:56Speaker 4: role that you know Rock Burke traded away. Here's a
- 18:58Speaker 4: guy that actually is stuff. Looks really comparable to brock Works.
- 19:02Speaker 4: I mean, he's a hard thrown lefty capable of punching
- 19:04Speaker 4: headers out. He doesn't seem overwhelmed by the moment, and
- 19:09Speaker 4: really like what I see out of them.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I could take one more break for a word
- 19:13Speaker 1: from our sponsors, and when we come back, we're going
- 19:15Speaker 1: to talk about zach Netto and some interesting trade rumers
- 19:18Speaker 1: that are already beginning to pop up around baseball regarding Angels.
- 19:22Speaker 2: We'll be right back with more Halo Territory.

- 20:26Speaker 1: Hey, Welcome back to Hillo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 20:29Speaker 1: Mike dgi Ivanowell. Zach Netto, the mercurial shortstop, continues to
- 20:34Speaker 1: frustrate many with his uneven on field play. Netto made
- 20:39Speaker 1: his major league leading thirteenth era on a potential double
- 20:42Speaker 1: play grounder and struck out four times Friday night. But
- 20:46Speaker 1: it was his reaction to an eighth inning bloop single
- 20:50Speaker 1: that seemed to draw the ire of some Mark, what
- 20:53Speaker 1: did you see on that play?
- 20:57Speaker 4: It was a play that he really wasn't a great swing.
- 21:02Speaker 4: I think that's what he was reacting to. For the
- 21:04Speaker 4: most part, not much of an effort out of the box,
- 21:07Speaker 4: and he actually got a hit on it. He's been
- 21:09Speaker 4: very good or very lucky about salvaging something in these
- 21:15Speaker 4: games where the beginning really is. I get asked a
- 21:20Speaker 4: lot here elsewhere, you know, friends text, what's going on
- 21:25Speaker 4: with this guy?
- 21:26Speaker 3: What's the deal?
- 21:27Speaker 4: To be honest, I don't have a clue what the
- 21:29Speaker 4: deal is. The first pitch of the series Friday Night, McClanahan,
- 21:33Speaker 4: first pitch of the bottom of the first inning. So
- 21:35Speaker 4: it's not the first pitch of the game, but it
- 21:37Speaker 4: is the first pitch the Angels are going to see.
- 21:39Speaker 4: He hacks at a ball a foot and a half outside.
- 21:43Speaker 4: I mean, the box pretty much explains a lot of it. Yeah,
- 21:47Speaker 4: here it is at number one.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Where's that It's not that down the middle fastball that
- 21:52Speaker 1: zach Netto usually links to it.
- 21:55Speaker 4: No, I don't see any approach at all at the
- 21:57Speaker 4: plate right now, pure hacking, no fight with two strikes,
- 22:02Speaker 4: a lot of weird swings, corkscrew off balance, seems to
- 22:06Speaker 4: be entirely trying to do one thing and one thing
- 22:10Speaker 4: only it's the long ball. He's pimping balls that don't
- 22:14Speaker 4: go out of the ballpark. He's pimping balls that go
- 22:17Speaker 4: out by a mere foot, and the broadcasters are, you know, saying, hey,
- 22:21Speaker 4: he must have really known he got it. I don't
- 22:23Speaker 4: think that's the case at all. I think it just
- 22:25Speaker 4: was in case. In case it did go out, I'm
- 22:27Speaker 4: going to be up here looking cool. Yeah, it's like,
- 22:33Speaker 4: you know, the the demonstrative emotional stuff. It looks like
- 22:37Speaker 4: somebody stole his lunch money, really kind of pouting out there.
- 22:42Speaker 4: I haven't really had a big appetite to talk about
- 22:46Speaker 4: him as much. He's he's doing his own thing. We're
- 22:51Speaker 4: kind of, you know, this is this is the job.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Though we have to talk about it. He's not part
- 22:55Speaker 4: of the pack. We're going to say it's a pack mentality.
- 22:58Speaker 4: He's not part of the pack. He's doing his own thing.
- 23:00Speaker 4: He looks very frustrated. Was someone probably his defense is suffering.
- 23:05Speaker 4: He's gotten you know, he has stolen bases. Yes, he's
- 23:08Speaker 4: also gotten caught stealing quite a bit, so his base
- 23:11Speaker 4: running value is not as high as it probably could be.
- 23:15Speaker 4: The defensive errors there was a mental mistake that was
- 23:20Speaker 4: not counted as an error, and then he threw one
- 23:22Speaker 4: in the dirt. That man seeing he picked him up on,
- 23:24Speaker 4: but really the lack of hustle that I will not
- 23:28Speaker 4: I've called out multiple players already and he is not hustling.
- 23:32Speaker 4: And people wonder do managers, you know, is that still
- 23:35Speaker 4: a thing? Do they do it well last year or so?
- 23:37Speaker 2: No?
- 23:37Speaker 4: But here are some examples if you wonder who has
- 23:40Speaker 4: gotten bench Glabor Torres twenty twenty four, Aaron Boone lack
- 23:43Speaker 4: of hustle, Brian Snicker Bench, Marcelo Zuna and Ronald Acunyu Junior.
- 23:48Speaker 4: One was in twenty three, one was in twenty nineteen,
- 23:50Speaker 4: Alex Redue in twenty twenty three by Alex Cora, and
- 23:53Speaker 4: Luis Robert Jr. In twenty twenty three by Hero Brifall.
- 23:57Speaker 4: So yes, it still happens. I don't think it would
- 24:00Speaker 4: become extinct for no particular reason, but I think it
- 24:04Speaker 4: would be a good time for Kurt to say, or
- 24:07Speaker 4: at least I'm sure that they have had talks trying
- 24:09Speaker 4: to figure out what's going on with this guy, but
- 24:12Speaker 4: it's not really worked. And in my opinion, I don't
- 24:15Speaker 4: think hitting him lead off makes a lot of sense.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Are you seeing a leadoff hitter?
- 24:19Speaker 2: Not at all?
- 24:19Speaker 1: And I've mentioned this on the show before there has
- 24:23Speaker 1: to be a message sent, whether it's one on one
- 24:25Speaker 1: meeting verbally with Kurt the GM or whatever it is,
- 24:29Speaker 1: or a message has to be sent by Hey, we're
- 24:31Speaker 1: dropping you down to the seven hole in the order
- 24:33Speaker 1: or the seventh spot something like that, you know, maybe six,
- 24:37Speaker 1: maybe fifth. But I definitely would drop him out of
- 24:39Speaker 1: the order, mainly because I think you have some other
- 24:42Speaker 1: candidates right now who could lead off for this team
- 24:44Speaker 1: and can give you some pretty good options, Wade Meckler
- 24:47Speaker 1: being one. But yeah, it must be Zech had had
- 24:52Speaker 1: such a great year last year and he seemed to
- 24:54Speaker 1: be on such a trajectory to start him and I
- 24:57Speaker 1: don't know what's going on with him this year. It is,
- 25:00Speaker 1: you know, everything you just mentioned all true, and then
- 25:02Speaker 1: you watch him. I think it was the fifth ending
- 25:04Speaker 1: today he goes way over in the whole backhands a
- 25:07Speaker 1: grounder by Camon Arrow two on, he makes a perfect
- 25:11Speaker 1: one hop you know, throw to first get some So
- 25:14Speaker 1: the talent is not a question of talent, it's a
- 25:17Speaker 1: question of consistency of effort. And you've you've mentioned Mike
- 25:22Speaker 1: Trout how many times this guy is going to be
- 25:24Speaker 1: thirty five years old, he's won three MVPs. Granted he
- 25:27Speaker 1: hasn't won a playoff game. He's not he hasn't won
- 25:29Speaker 1: a World Series, but he's done everything individually in this
- 25:32Speaker 1: game you can accomplish. And he's still busting out a
- 25:35Speaker 1: box out of a box on a routine pop up
- 25:39Speaker 1: because you just never know. And I don't know why
- 25:41Speaker 1: Trout has not rubbed off on this kid more. You know,
- 25:44Speaker 1: Ron Washington seemed to get to him a bit last year.
- 25:49Speaker 1: For some reason, nothing's getting through this year. And I
- 25:52Speaker 1: don't know if it's because, you know, Kurt's the first
- 25:54Speaker 1: year manager, a former player who is not far removed
- 25:58Speaker 1: from his playing days at all. But yeah, someone needs
- 26:02Speaker 1: to come down on this.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Overall numbers are still respectable. The batting average is way
- 26:07Speaker 4: too low for a guy with his talent, but the
- 26:10Speaker 4: power numbers are there. The ops he drew all those
- 26:12Speaker 4: early walks, which has helped him in the on base
- 26:14Speaker 4: percentage regard. Recently he has not been getting on base
- 26:17Speaker 4: at a high clip. But it really, you know, it
- 26:20Speaker 4: takes these a couple series away from really looking the part.
- 26:25Speaker 4: The thirteen home runs look nice, He's driven in some runs,
- 26:28Speaker 4: He's got some stolen bases. Yeah, he's got caught stealing
- 26:31Speaker 4: the airs. You're not going to be able to erase those,
- 26:33Speaker 4: But you can't improve the fundamentals and start I think
- 26:38Speaker 4: it starts with the attitude. Need to see a consistent attitude.
- 26:42Speaker 4: That and I think Logan O Hoppy has talked about
- 26:45Speaker 4: his attitude and he's in a better place, seems to be,
- 26:48Speaker 4: you know, and the mental part is a big deal.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Now some guys, how do you improve the mental part?
- 26:53Speaker 4: You got to get more hits and that appears to
- 26:55Speaker 4: be what netto you know, he's I think he lacks
- 26:58Speaker 4: maturity and perspective. He still has an outstanding set of tools,
- 27:04Speaker 4: makes that play you're talking about and makes you know,
- 27:06Speaker 4: some other ones that are world class. But a lot
- 27:09Speaker 4: is left to be desired this season.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Yeah, Hey, we're going to close the show of the
- 27:13Speaker 1: trade roomer that popped up on Sunday courtesy of Bob Nightingale,
- 27:17Speaker 1: my old LA Times colleague, now with USA Today. The
- 27:21Speaker 1: Phillies are desperately looking to acquire an outfielder at the
- 27:25Speaker 1: trade deadline, with a Doulas Garcia expected to miss the
- 27:28Speaker 1: rest of the season with his torn lat and have
- 27:31Speaker 1: Angels right fielder Joe Adell and Cubs right fielder Saya
- 27:35Speaker 1: Suzuki on their radar.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Well.
- 27:38Speaker 1: First of all, kudos to the Phills for setting their
- 27:41Speaker 1: site pretty high.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I think this is the time of year to do it.
- 27:45Speaker 2: You know.
- 27:46Speaker 1: The Angels are twenty nine and forty three. They're still tied,
- 27:49Speaker 1: I believe, for the with Kansas City for the worst
- 27:51Speaker 1: record in the league, but they are only seven and
- 27:55Speaker 1: a half games out in the American League worst.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I think thee would be wise to listen to pretty
- 28:03Speaker 2: much on anything on all of their players right now.
- 28:05Speaker 1: We talked about that on a previous show, especially this
- 28:09Speaker 1: early before the trade deadline, where a team with an
- 28:13Speaker 1: obvious need that's an obvious contender like the Phillies might
- 28:17Speaker 1: be willing to overpay.
- 28:18Speaker 2: For a guy like Joe Adell. Uh, but I don't know.
- 28:21Speaker 1: What do you think, Mark, We're still not even a
- 28:24Speaker 1: month away from you know, serious trade rumors beginning. Uh,
- 28:29Speaker 1: what do you think when you saw this, this rumor?
- 28:31Speaker 1: And would you entertain a trade if it was.
- 28:36Speaker 3: A lot of things like that from Bob over the years?
- 28:40Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 28:41Speaker 3: Where where does Bob get those? I wonder if.
- 28:46Speaker 4: On another show, maybe we can get into the how
- 28:48Speaker 4: how the world works?
- 28:49Speaker 3: Oh what what?
- 28:52Speaker 4: I do think the Angels are playing a lot better
- 28:56Speaker 4: baseball this? Uh could Well, I'm not going to beat
- 29:01Speaker 4: a dead horse. But their direction is different, or their
- 29:05Speaker 4: game planning is different than other teams. Other teams that
- 29:08Speaker 4: have the worst record would look to probably move guysing
- 29:11Speaker 4: and they have moved guys. It's not as if they
- 29:13Speaker 4: haven't done that before. But it's hard because if they continue,
- 29:17Speaker 4: Let's say they have a good series against the Diamondbacks
- 29:20Speaker 4: and battle Sacramento. Let's say they win both of those series,
- 29:26Speaker 4: the momentum is only going in one direction. It could
- 29:28Speaker 4: be a reversal, of course, if there was a thought
- 29:31Speaker 4: to sell. But I do think that sometimes the early
- 29:34Speaker 4: bird gets the worm.
- 29:35Speaker 3: And if a.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Team Dave Dave Dombrosk, I mean, he'll pay, like that's
- 29:40Speaker 4: one thing he will do if he wants the player,
- 29:42Speaker 4: he's willing to give. You know, he understands you've got
- 29:44Speaker 4: to give something up. And I don't not too familiar
- 29:48Speaker 4: with the Philly system, but sure I could take a look,
- 29:51Speaker 4: pick a couple of guys, maybe three, say hey, we'll
- 29:53Speaker 4: take this, you know, top maybe a top ten prospect,
- 29:57Speaker 4: in their system or two would be great. Think major
- 30:00Speaker 4: league ready talented is exactly what you'd look for, but
- 30:03Speaker 4: who knows what a package might look like. And Joeydell's
- 30:06Speaker 4: hot right now you can't ignore that. Good time to
- 30:09Speaker 4: grab them? Yeah all right?
- 30:11Speaker 1: Hey, just a reminder, Halo Territory followersm fans, We have
