- 1:26Speaker 2: joining us on the Irish Theaters Podcast. Okay, so our
- 1:30Speaker 2: guest today on the Irish Theaters Podcast is none other
- 1:33Speaker 2: than the General Manager of the NFL UK and Ireland,
- 1:36Speaker 2: Henry Hodgson. Henry, a warm welcome to the podcast, Falsa,
- 1:39Speaker 2: as we say, you're very very welcome. How you do.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I am doing great, Thank you, It's great to be
- 1:43Speaker 3: with you. Big fan of the podcast. I'm but excited
- 1:47Speaker 3: to join you today as well.
- 1:49Speaker 2: It's funny, Henry. We set out now just around a
- 1:52Speaker 2: month or so when we find out the news of
- 1:54Speaker 2: the Steelers playing their first ever regular season home game
- 1:57Speaker 2: or designated game in Ireland and this year, it's an
- 2:01Speaker 2: exciting moment, not just for Steelers fans that are listening
- 2:03Speaker 2: to this podcast, but for the NFL across the island
- 2:06Speaker 2: of Ireland and in the UK as well.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Yeah, of course it is.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I mean, this is the culmination of work that's been
- 2:13Speaker 3: going on for the last few months, I suppose in
- 2:17Speaker 3: real haste, but I guess really since the day that
- 2:20Speaker 3: the Steelers launched the GMP.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Program in Ireland a.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Couple of years ago now, and I think we're all
- 2:27Speaker 3: incredibly excited about the prospect of bringing an NFL game
- 2:31Speaker 3: to Dublin, an NFL regular season game for the very
- 2:34Speaker 3: first time. And I know that the Steelers especially have
- 2:38Speaker 3: been excited about that really from the day that they
- 2:41Speaker 3: set foot at Croke Park in twenty nineteen or sorry,
- 2:45Speaker 3: twenty twenty one to announce the program.
- 2:49Speaker 2: How have you found the response just over the last
- 2:51Speaker 2: few weeks, because I think from me and for a
- 2:53Speaker 2: lot of people sort of around the game, it's definitely
- 2:56Speaker 2: reached a different level. But I thought the response has
- 2:58Speaker 2: been fantastic.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I think it's been fantastic, but I don't think it's
- 3:02Speaker 3: any it's been any more fantastic than I'd expected it
- 3:05Speaker 3: to be. Knowing the passion of the Irish fans and
- 3:08Speaker 3: the passion of Steelers fans. You know, I think everything
- 3:10Speaker 3: that we've seen sort of underscores the reason that we
- 3:13Speaker 3: wanted to come to Ireland in the first place to
- 3:16Speaker 3: play a regular season game. That we knew that there's
- 3:19Speaker 3: a big, passionate fan base. We knew that it'd be
- 3:21Speaker 3: very well received in Ireland and embraced, you know, across
- 3:24Speaker 3: Ireland by sports fans there, and we knew that there
- 3:27Speaker 3: be excitement I think, you know from the US as well,
- 3:30Speaker 3: from Steelers fans, Steelers Nation in America and across the
- 3:35Speaker 3: globe about the prospect of the Steelers playing in Dublin,
- 3:39Speaker 3: which is obviously in Ireland, which is the ancestral home.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Of the Rooneys.
- 3:43Speaker 3: So it all, it all makes so much sense that, yes,
- 3:46Speaker 3: that the reaction has been has been fantastic, but also
- 3:50Speaker 3: sort of somewhat expected.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You talk about that day in the Holgen, Sweeden core
- 3:55Speaker 2: Park when they announced the start of the GMPP program.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Impressed have you been with the efforts from from Nan tonight,
- 4:02Speaker 2: because it seems to have just taken the gear up
- 4:05Speaker 2: every just every few months as well, Henry, just with
- 4:07Speaker 2: different things going on.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I think you're right, and you know, honestly, we saw
- 4:11Speaker 3: it even before that day when when we first started
- 4:14Speaker 3: talking to the Steelers about the prospect of this happening
- 4:18Speaker 3: and of them being part of the Global Markets program.
- 4:22Speaker 3: You know, from from the very beginning, I think more
- 4:25Speaker 3: than probably any team that I've worked with in that program,
- 4:29Speaker 3: they had a very very clear vision for why Ireland
- 4:32Speaker 3: was important.
- 4:33Speaker 4: You know, I think it's obviously.
- 4:36Speaker 3: With some other clubs, you know, you look at the
- 4:39Speaker 3: sort of the why behind it, and it certainly doesn't
- 4:41Speaker 3: have the depth of the roots that that the Rooney
- 4:45Speaker 3: family and the Steelers have in the market. So I
- 4:49Speaker 3: think that that authenticity of what they're doing and why
- 4:53Speaker 3: they're doing and how they go about it has been
- 4:56Speaker 3: evident really from even before they were part of the program.
- 4:59Speaker 3: But you know, really from then onwards, I've been incredibly
- 5:01Speaker 3: impressed by how meticulous they've been about growing their audience
- 5:06Speaker 3: in Ireland. You know, the different sort of leavers they've
- 5:10Speaker 3: pulled to do that, whether it's you know, supporting sort
- 5:13Speaker 3: of some of the grassroots and flag football or football
- 5:16Speaker 3: development programs, whether it's the watch parties that they've delivered
- 5:20Speaker 3: in the market, whether it's you know, this kind of
- 5:22Speaker 3: thing that the podcast and the other content that they're
- 5:25Speaker 3: producing to engage fans locally, whether it's the player trips
- 5:29Speaker 3: that they bringing players into market, some of their commercial
- 5:32Speaker 3: efforts as well. I think everything has been sort of
- 5:35Speaker 3: you know, the stepping stones you would, I suppose, users
- 5:38Speaker 3: a blueprint for any team going into any market, but
- 5:41Speaker 3: all with that deep rooted you know family in Ireland
- 5:48Speaker 3: that kind of knitted all together.
- 5:51Speaker 2: While the Staters have always said from the start of
- 5:54Speaker 2: our process that there eventually aim is to hopefully play
- 5:57Speaker 2: a game on the island of Ireland, I think the
- 5:59Speaker 2: news team as a welcome surprise for so so many people.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Last month Henry talked to us about the process for
- 6:06Speaker 2: you guys and how that game was planned and confirmed.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Was it a long process or how did you find
- 6:11Speaker 2: it just down the stretch.
- 6:13Speaker 4: I think it was again a process that probably started with,
- 6:16Speaker 4: you know, the momentum began with the Steelers committing as
- 6:19Speaker 4: a global markets program team in Ireland.
- 6:23Speaker 3: I think it was probably a happy coincidence that at
- 6:26Speaker 3: the you know, probably I guess twelve eighteen months into
- 6:29Speaker 3: that time, from an NFL international standpoint, our strategy has
- 6:35Speaker 3: evolved to play more games internationally and so there was
- 6:38Speaker 3: a moment where we were going from a limited number
- 6:41Speaker 3: of game inventory to to significantly more. You know, that's
- 6:46Speaker 3: grown this year obviously to seven games plus plus the
- 6:50Speaker 3: Jags game, and you know the intent is to continue
- 6:52Speaker 3: growing that. So I think that was a good coincidence
- 6:56Speaker 3: that those things happen at the same time.
- 6:58Speaker 4: And then I think when we came and.
- 7:01Speaker 3: When I say we, I mean sort of our operational team,
- 7:03Speaker 3: when we came to Dublin and looked at the two
- 7:06Speaker 3: stadium options that we had, it was very clear that,
- 7:10Speaker 3: you know, unlike perhaps some other markets that we look at,
- 7:14Speaker 3: there were very very sort of turnkey solutions to playing
- 7:18Speaker 3: American football games in Dublin, in both Croak Park obviously,
- 7:22Speaker 3: which is that the venue we've landed on, but also
- 7:24Speaker 3: the Aviva, which was you know it has has hosted
- 7:26Speaker 3: college football games and is it a great facility itself.
- 7:29Speaker 3: So I think, you know, all of those things, plus
- 7:33Speaker 3: then once we had sort of identified that the support
- 7:37Speaker 3: that we began to receive from the Irish government, from
- 7:40Speaker 3: Dublin City Council, from lots of really important stakeholders that
- 7:44Speaker 3: would that would lead us to play a game there,
- 7:47Speaker 3: I think all of all of that momentum kind of
- 7:49Speaker 3: you know, became irresistible if you like, and so playing
- 7:53Speaker 3: actually kind of signing off on it and saying, yes,
- 7:56Speaker 3: we're going to go ahead and do this. Once we
- 7:58Speaker 3: had the stadium select, once we had the support of
- 8:02Speaker 3: those stakeholders I mentioned, and obviously with an incredibly strong
- 8:06Speaker 3: push from the Steelers who clearly wanted to do this,
- 8:10Speaker 3: it sort of it grew legs and a life of
- 8:14Speaker 3: its own, and obviously we were delighted to be able
- 8:17Speaker 3: to confirm it.
- 8:19Speaker 2: You mentioned there a little bit about Krook Park, and
- 8:20Speaker 2: for people listening to this podcast aren't aware, the me
- 8:23Speaker 2: and GA season ends at the end of July or
- 8:26Speaker 2: early August, depending on how it finishes up. So it's
- 8:29Speaker 2: an interesting situation, Henry, because you're looking at the stadium
- 8:31Speaker 2: there where the field is going to be in fantastic condition,
- 8:35Speaker 2: because there's going to be a bit of time for
- 8:36Speaker 2: it to really settle there as well. But you mentioned
- 8:39Speaker 2: a bit of a Krook Park. How impressed were you
- 8:42Speaker 2: when you first went in for the first time with
- 8:43Speaker 2: that meeting, because for a lot of people on the
- 8:46Speaker 2: Island of Ireland, it's like we call it the Mecca.
- 8:48Speaker 2: It's like the sporting capital of the whole thing for us,
- 8:51Speaker 2: you know.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it is.
- 8:53Speaker 3: I mean, look, I was I'm old enough to have
- 8:56Speaker 3: been around the NFL, albeit not in the role I
- 8:59Speaker 3: mean now in when when the Steelers played a preseason
- 9:03Speaker 3: game there, and I remember some of my colleagues coming
- 9:07Speaker 3: back from from being part of that event and talking
- 9:10Speaker 3: about what an incredible stadium it was. So for me
- 9:13Speaker 3: to go there the first time I did, which was
- 9:14Speaker 3: when the Steelers launched in the market, and finally see
- 9:17Speaker 3: this stadium that I had, the legendary stadium that i'd
- 9:20Speaker 3: heard about. It lived up to everything then and it
- 9:23Speaker 3: and it has done ever since as well. And I think,
- 9:26Speaker 3: you know, the that that I suppose, that feeling that
- 9:29Speaker 3: I had, I think was shared by, as I mentioned earlier,
- 9:32Speaker 3: the sort of operational team who went in there and
- 9:35Speaker 3: had a look at the stadium from a sort of
- 9:37Speaker 3: you know, field feasibility, locker room feasibility, but also just
- 9:40Speaker 3: so general kind of you know, is this the right
- 9:43Speaker 3: place for for an NFL game to come to? And
- 9:45Speaker 3: I think everybody left going wow, this is a fantastic venue,
- 9:50Speaker 3: a historic venue, and one that will be just you know,
- 9:54Speaker 3: a really great one for for an NFL game to
- 9:56Speaker 3: be played at. So, you know, I think there are
- 9:59Speaker 3: there are many converted fans of Croke Park within the NFL,
- 10:04Speaker 3: and I would expect that to only increase by eighty
- 10:08Speaker 3: thousand or so when we first play a game there
- 10:12Speaker 3: in a few months time.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Does it excite you that while it's in the UK
- 10:16Speaker 2: and Ireland scope, it's almost a new plan, different stadium
- 10:20Speaker 2: like And I have to ask this on behalf of
- 10:23Speaker 2: not just theaters fans, but NFL fans in Ireland listening
- 10:26Speaker 2: and just sort of your thoughts, your ideas in terms
- 10:29Speaker 2: of I know it's early, but Dublin itself is such
- 10:32Speaker 2: a central city, Henry the fact that you can walk
- 10:34Speaker 2: from Croke Park to the city center at fifteen minutes,
- 10:36Speaker 2: there must be so many opportunities for the Caelers, for
- 10:38Speaker 2: the league for fan engagement on this day when it
- 10:40Speaker 2: comes they're on in the air.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Yeah, there really are.
- 10:44Speaker 3: I mean I think we you know, I think it
- 10:45Speaker 3: starts probably from now, not just the day of the game,
- 10:51Speaker 3: not just the week of the game, but from from
- 10:53Speaker 3: this point onwards with opportunities for us to show up
- 10:57Speaker 3: in the market and that's not just Dublin, that's across
- 10:59Speaker 3: all of our island. I think we want it to
- 11:01Speaker 3: be seen to engage as much as we possibly can
- 11:05Speaker 3: do across Ireland as a whole. And I know that
- 11:08Speaker 3: that's an ambition of the Steelers too. But when it
- 11:12Speaker 3: comes to game week, I think we have a bit
- 11:13Speaker 3: of a playbook for you know, how you show.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Up in a city.
- 11:17Speaker 3: From my perspective, and maybe I'm being very selfish here,
- 11:21Speaker 3: but I think I can speak a little bit for
- 11:23Speaker 3: our sort of entire fan events team. That's that you know,
- 11:26Speaker 3: has delivered games in Germany and the UK, and you know,
- 11:29Speaker 3: in some cases.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Mexico and Brazil as well.
- 11:32Speaker 3: I think what I'm most excited about, quite honestly, is
- 11:35Speaker 3: is Dublin's ability to make, you know, for a for
- 11:40Speaker 3: a short period of time, make an event the hero
- 11:44Speaker 3: sort of thing that's happening in the city because of
- 11:47Speaker 3: the size of the city and and I suppose how
- 11:50Speaker 3: condensed its center is. I've been able to see that
- 11:53Speaker 3: a couple of times when I've come to the incredible
- 11:56Speaker 3: college football game there, and you know, I just I
- 12:00Speaker 3: can't couldn't get past the idea of of sort of
- 12:04Speaker 3: that the center of the city being taken over by
- 12:07Speaker 3: NFL fans, by Steelers fans. That gives me goosebumps even
- 12:12Speaker 3: now talking about it. You know what that's going to
- 12:15Speaker 3: be like when when we play that game this season. So,
- 12:19Speaker 3: you know, I think that that's that's really exciting, and
- 12:23Speaker 3: I have every I have every confidence that the event
- 12:27Speaker 3: will be an unforgettable one, not just game day, but
- 12:30Speaker 3: but sort of everything around it.
- 12:33Speaker 2: And for people listening NFL dot Com slash Dublin, I'm
- 12:35Speaker 2: not going to ask you that question, Henry, but for
- 12:37Speaker 2: people listening, obviously there's a lot of excitement you can imagine,
- 12:40Speaker 2: not just on podcasts, but people in the street, people
- 12:43Speaker 2: text and everyone's bossing. But this it's obviously a very
- 12:46Speaker 2: exciting year ahead. Is there a timeline or sort of
- 12:49Speaker 2: you know, when we should be able to hear some
- 12:51Speaker 2: more information or is it very much sort of a
- 12:53Speaker 2: wait and see.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I would certainly not very much wait and see. That
- 12:57Speaker 3: sounds like we're keeping secrets from you. We don't know
- 12:59Speaker 3: the answer to some of the questions that you all
- 13:02Speaker 3: would like answers to today as well. So I think that's,
- 13:05Speaker 3: you know, that's really what we need to get to
- 13:07Speaker 3: that point where we can have the answers, so that
- 13:09Speaker 3: we can give the answers. As you know, and I
- 13:13Speaker 3: think as hopefully as fans are sort of broadly aware,
- 13:16Speaker 3: Typically the NFL schedule is released after the draft. I
- 13:20Speaker 3: think last year it was kind of the second week
- 13:22Speaker 3: of May. I would expect the same thing to happen
- 13:26Speaker 3: this year. The International Games again have been announced as
- 13:29Speaker 3: part of that. Sometimes it's the day of, but obviously
- 13:32Speaker 3: at a more convenient time zone for international fans. I
- 13:36Speaker 3: think it's been as much as sort of four or
- 13:38Speaker 3: five days ahead of schedule release to kind of bread
- 13:41Speaker 3: crumb the way to the to the main schedule release.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I can't tell you what the plan is this year,
- 13:46Speaker 3: and you know in part that because the schedule is
- 13:48Speaker 3: a complicated beast that take us and come together. And
- 13:53Speaker 3: while you know, we know for a fact that there
- 13:56Speaker 3: will be a game in Dublin and it will include
- 13:59Speaker 3: the Steelers, and we know that the Steelers have a
- 14:02Speaker 3: nine teams on their schedule this year, and we know
- 14:05Speaker 3: that some of those teams are playing internationally already, so
- 14:07Speaker 3: they probably aren't going to be playing in Dublin. That's
- 14:10Speaker 3: really as sort of as far as the puzzle goes,
- 14:13Speaker 3: and I'm sure that you and lots of Steelers fans
- 14:15Speaker 3: and lots of NFL fans in general have put those
- 14:17Speaker 3: pieces together already, so we're all in the same place.
- 14:21Speaker 3: But you know we I'd expect that we'll be able
- 14:24Speaker 3: to make the announcement around a date and around an
- 14:26Speaker 3: opponent at around sort of the early to mid May time.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and look that that's awesome. I think for a
- 14:35Speaker 2: lot of people listening, it just means a lot. There's
- 14:37Speaker 2: that there's a game happening here. In the first list,
- 14:39Speaker 2: I think everyone's just delighted. To be honest with you,
- 14:41Speaker 2: just finally, Henry from yourself. You know, we've seen over
- 14:46Speaker 2: way past the last decade, but we've seen a real
- 14:48Speaker 2: legacy out of these London games, like a lot more
- 14:51Speaker 2: things taking place. The Ring of Honor took place last year. Look,
- 14:55Speaker 2: we're flowing a coin way down the path here, but
- 14:58Speaker 2: do you see the idea of this are stubblinging and
- 15:00Speaker 2: you just sort of add into the legacy of what
- 15:02Speaker 2: the NFL is doing and will hopefully continue to do
- 15:05Speaker 2: in the ukn ART and the long end of the future.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely, Look, I mean It's funny.
- 15:10Speaker 3: I just came off another call with someone else and
- 15:12Speaker 3: we were talking about exactly that. You know, we've we've
- 15:15Speaker 3: been playing games in London since two thousand and seven,
- 15:18Speaker 3: but I wouldn't say we're anywhere near where we want
- 15:21Speaker 3: to get to and where we expect that we can
- 15:24Speaker 3: get to in the UK with relation to those games.
- 15:28Speaker 3: We're at the start of a journey in Ireland in
- 15:31Speaker 3: terms of playing games, but I think also in terms
- 15:33Speaker 3: of sort of implementing some of the other programs that
- 15:35Speaker 3: we have done in the UK, whether it's flag football,
- 15:38Speaker 3: which is you know, incredibly important to us, I think
- 15:40Speaker 3: as a means of growing participation in the sport and
- 15:44Speaker 3: therefore fandom. In terms of you know, identifying a media
- 15:48Speaker 3: partner that can really get behind the sport and you know,
- 15:51Speaker 3: bring it to the masses through TV, which I think
- 15:55Speaker 3: is also something that we would love to be able
- 15:59Speaker 3: to do in ourland. Finding the right commercial partners that
- 16:02Speaker 3: we can grow with and alongside in the market is
- 16:05Speaker 3: really important. You know, there are a number of things
- 16:08Speaker 3: that you know, when you look at the blueprint of
- 16:10Speaker 3: how do you grow this and how do you make
- 16:12Speaker 3: sure that this isn't seen as a traveling circus, right,
- 16:14Speaker 3: We're not just putting up a tent and then coming back,
- 16:17Speaker 3: you know, at no point in the future. We want
- 16:19Speaker 3: this to be the start of that, the catalyst, the
- 16:22Speaker 3: springboard to to you know, real growth for the NFL
- 16:27Speaker 3: and the market, real growth for the Steelers brand in
- 16:29Speaker 3: the market, so that you know, for we're stronger after
- 16:33Speaker 3: this game and we can continue growing for years afterwards.
- 16:37Speaker 4: That's the plan. That's what we're trying to get done here.
- 16:40Speaker 3: But obviously in the meantime we're also very focused on
- 16:42Speaker 3: making sure that Game one and that this event is
- 16:44Speaker 3: as good as it possibly can be. We're trying to
- 16:46Speaker 3: deliver a mini super Bowl to Dublin. That's the plan,
- 16:50Speaker 3: and you know that's what we're we're looking to execute.
- 16:53Speaker 2: That is a signdbite for this podcast and the air
- 16:56Speaker 2: series podcast Henry a minie super Bowl. I love it
