- 0:04Speaker 1: Believe.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Okay, before that we played a seven nation army by
- 0:10Speaker 2: friend and because Stephen Ollie, as I say here this morning,
- 0:14Speaker 2: the under thirteen's rugby folks on rugby team. What about
- 0:19Speaker 2: that song? Then, Steve, what's it called again? A seven
- 0:24Speaker 2: nation army? What's that one all about?
- 0:26Speaker 1: The white stripes version. We just ten to tend to
- 0:29Speaker 1: plan the bus when we go up to festivals, Okay,
- 0:31Speaker 1: open to a few places like London, Welsh, London, Irish.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We're going up to Saracen's next year. So it's just
- 0:37Speaker 1: a bit of a team song that we tend to
- 0:39Speaker 1: plan on the bus as we're traveling.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Oh right, okay, so it's a bit of an anthem
- 0:44Speaker 2: for you, is it? It can be okay, As you know,
- 0:47Speaker 2: I'm not the greatest of rugby fans. Sorry, I'll reiterate
- 0:52Speaker 2: that I don't know a lot about rugby.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Run me through the basics, the basics. All you've got
- 0:59Speaker 1: to do is run forward and passed backwards. But it's
- 1:02Speaker 1: the it's the perfect sport from from our point of view,
- 1:05Speaker 1: because it's it's full of full of fast players that
- 1:08Speaker 1: are moving quick and there's also a place for the big,
- 1:11Speaker 1: strong kids as well, so it's a nice mix.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll not being too disrespectful the bigger children. They
- 1:18Speaker 2: can't play football so much as what other unless that's
- 1:23Speaker 2: center half or a center forward. Yeah, so I was
- 1:27Speaker 2: trying to really get around. But yeah, you know, they
- 1:29Speaker 2: found a sport. Only how did you get into rugby?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Some of my parents always like recommended it, and I
- 1:36Speaker 3: thought about it. Okay, Finally I thought, okay, I'll have
- 1:39Speaker 3: a go at Folkston and then really enjoyed it. So
- 1:42Speaker 3: I kept going.
- 1:43Speaker 4: And what position do you play on?
- 1:45Speaker 5: Number one? A loose head?
- 1:47Speaker 4: I have no idea what that means.
- 1:49Speaker 1: When they all get together in the middle of the
- 1:50Speaker 1: pitch to do a scrum, he's right in the front row.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Well, you're the one that's getting in the scrum and
- 1:57Speaker 2: trying to pull the trousers down in the opposition.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Is that the one?
- 2:00Speaker 1: We don't?
- 2:03Speaker 2: They learn that as they get older. Okay, and you
- 2:07Speaker 2: you really enjoy it, as I say, Yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 5: I love it. I think it's a perfect sport for myself.
- 2:12Speaker 4: And hell, have you been playing.
- 2:14Speaker 5: I've been playing for about three seasons.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Now, three seasons and you've got any trophies to show
- 2:19Speaker 2: for it?
- 2:21Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 2:21Speaker 3: I got one Coaches Player player season, like when I
- 2:26Speaker 3: first started after I broke my wrist, So I got
- 2:29Speaker 3: a reward for that for showing how well I do
- 2:32Speaker 3: for my team and not putting my body on the line.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Well that's what you have to do in team sports.
- 2:39Speaker 2: You have to put your body on the line. Don't
- 2:40Speaker 2: you break something? No, no, you don't want to do that.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And do you play rugby at school?
- 2:45Speaker 4: Still?
- 2:46Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 2:47Speaker 3: So at my school we do a rugby team usually yearly.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Do you have a school rugby team?
- 2:54Speaker 5: Not quite? My teacher hasn't started doing it.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yeah okay, I mean it was you said you off
- 3:00Speaker 2: earlier on when when I was at school we had
- 3:03Speaker 2: to either do rugby or cross country running up that
- 3:06Speaker 2: lovely sugar Oaf hill. Yeah, more or less once. But
- 3:11Speaker 2: for me, being about six stone went through. I think
- 3:14Speaker 2: cross country was the ultimate for me rather than the
- 3:18Speaker 2: get beat on by all the big kids trying to
- 3:21Speaker 2: play your rugby is an excuse to beat you up.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean do you follow rugby as well? Ollie?
- 3:29Speaker 4: You were?
- 3:30Speaker 2: You know, do you have a team that you were
- 3:32Speaker 2: you follow, like, you know, like a Liverpool or Man
- 3:35Speaker 2: United for football wise?
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm the Saracen supporter. So they're quite they're doing
- 3:40Speaker 3: quite well in the league. And I'm also in love
- 3:43Speaker 3: with England.
- 3:46Speaker 1: England.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I remember when when they won the World Cup. It
- 3:51Speaker 2: was fantastic because my ex mother in law was Australian
- 3:56Speaker 2: and we sat there and we will watch the final
- 3:58Speaker 2: together and I never forget she said to me, who's
- 4:00Speaker 2: that ugly looking bloke there? I said it was the
- 4:05Speaker 2: captain Mary Johnson. I said, here's the person that's going
- 4:08Speaker 2: about to go and lift that gold trophy up.
- 4:10Speaker 4: She didn't speak to me for three weeks. It was brilliant.
- 4:13Speaker 4: That's my best memory of rugby.
- 4:16Speaker 2: But no, I do like to watch England in the
- 4:18Speaker 2: Six Nations in the World Cup games when they play.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Obviously you were you you watch rugby all the time
- 4:27Speaker 2: and do you have any ambitions of becoming a professional player?
- 4:33Speaker 3: Later on, yeah, I think I'd love to play for
- 4:36Speaker 3: Saracens myself.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Later on, Sarah, where where's they play their home games?
- 4:40Speaker 1: Play up in Watford, North London.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Okay? Do they they use a football team stadium?
- 4:46Speaker 1: Well? Have they got their own the Aliens stadium? They've
- 4:49Speaker 1: got quite a bit, a big, decent stadium.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Because they're the I think they're the champions, are is
- 4:54Speaker 2: that correct?
- 4:55Speaker 1: I can't remember who won the league last year? Did
- 4:57Speaker 1: they win last year?
- 4:58Speaker 2: I'm I know there's Leicester Tigers, and I'm saying earlier
- 5:06Speaker 2: on I had a little bit stint of playing American football,
- 5:09Speaker 2: Martin Johnson actually coming against him in when he played
- 5:13Speaker 2: for the Leicester Huntsman. Yeah, that's a long, long, long
- 5:17Speaker 2: time ago. But yeah, you know, Yea lifted the World
- 5:21Speaker 2: Cup in the end, didn't he.
- 5:23Speaker 4: That's pretty right.
- 5:24Speaker 2: We're going to play one more song and then we're
- 5:26Speaker 2: going to come back and we're gonna get Steve's role
- 5:28Speaker 2: in what he does for the under thirteens and see
- 5:31Speaker 2: how he's going to go forward. This one is one
- 5:34Speaker 2: of my favorite bands. I saw her last year. I'd
- 5:38Speaker 2: be photo taken with him and I was absolutely in love.
- 5:42Speaker 2: This is Wendy James's Transition Van, but this is I
- 5:46Speaker 2: want your love anytime at all, Wedde. They got Transfigonal
- 6:13Speaker 2: Vamp from nineteen eighty eight.
- 6:16Speaker 4: God is it that?
- 6:17Speaker 1: I go?
- 6:18Speaker 2: Okay, Well, as I say, we got Ollie and Steve
- 6:19Speaker 2: in the studio. We're going to talk a little toit
- 6:21Speaker 2: bit now to Steve about I understand that you're doing
- 6:26Speaker 2: quite well in your league and you're you're I think
- 6:30Speaker 2: it all quote was, you're punching above your weight. Tell
- 6:32Speaker 2: us about your achievements.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So we started off by just challenging the kids a bit,
- 6:38Speaker 1: playing against bigger sides, taking them up to some of
- 6:40Speaker 1: the national or London based tournaments in London, Welsh, London, Irish,
- 6:44Speaker 1: going up to Saracens and just trying to push them
- 6:45Speaker 1: a little bit. And I've been really successful. They're beating
- 6:49Speaker 1: teams that a smaller CLUBI like folks and hasn't beaten
- 6:52Speaker 1: in a long time.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So we're showing the mic at the moment we think
- 6:57Speaker 2: one of the mics has gone down, but that yeah,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I mean for a focusing team that's really good doing
- 7:03Speaker 2: something really you know, punching above our weight, you know
- 7:08Speaker 2: under thirteens, I mean you're still kids and you the
- 7:12Speaker 2: progression there could be really good, and obviously you were.
- 7:16Speaker 2: How are you short of players or do you want
- 7:18Speaker 2: more players to come to the club and if they do,
- 7:22Speaker 2: how would they do that?
- 7:25Speaker 1: So as an age group, we're always looking to recruit,
- 7:28Speaker 1: We're always looking for new players. Season ago we had
- 7:31Speaker 1: enough people to start running two teams, so we run
- 7:34Speaker 1: a first team and a development team, but we always
- 7:37Speaker 1: welcome new players and it's the same through the other
- 7:39Speaker 1: age groups in the club that if someone's interested in
- 7:41Speaker 1: just want to try out rugby, just wants to come
- 7:43Speaker 1: along and give it a crack, just get on with
- 7:45Speaker 1: it and come down to us and we'll make them
- 7:47Speaker 1: feel welcome and we'll make sure they get involved. Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Sorry, sorry for a short delayed with a few technical
- 7:55Speaker 2: troubles with the microphone, but we're having to share at
- 7:57Speaker 2: the moment.
- 7:59Speaker 4: How would they actual we do that? Stupid?
- 8:00Speaker 2: You know, and is there any particular day that you
- 8:03Speaker 2: do your training or you know, how can they get
- 8:07Speaker 2: in contact with you?
- 8:09Speaker 1: So on our website we've got the contact details for
- 8:12Speaker 1: all the coaches of all the different age groups, so
- 8:14Speaker 1: you can just look on folks to Rugby Club's website,
- 8:18Speaker 1: just find the age group that you that you're looking for,
- 8:20Speaker 1: so under thirteen's is year eight as an example, and
- 8:24Speaker 1: then just get in touch with the club that way.
- 8:26Speaker 1: We train Tuesday nights and Thursday nights and we tend
- 8:29Speaker 1: to train or play our matches on Sundays between ten
- 8:31Speaker 1: and twelve so you're welcome just to come down to
- 8:34Speaker 1: the club, or you're welcome to get in touch with us,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and we'll make you feel welcome to come and try
- 8:37Speaker 1: it out.
- 8:39Speaker 4: So there you go.
- 8:40Speaker 2: If you've got a child that wants to get involved
- 8:45Speaker 2: in rugby, or even older people as well. And I
- 8:48Speaker 2: understand you've got ladies teams as well, and you know
- 8:51Speaker 2: they'll always be welcome as well. I try and sort
- 8:54Speaker 2: the microphone things out. We're playing another song and then
- 8:55Speaker 2: we could be back with Steve and Oli.
- 8:58Speaker 4: This one. Next one is I'm we got oh Banana Rama.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I love them. This is Nathan Jones.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Banana Rama Nathan Jones from again another one from nineteen
- 9:26Speaker 2: eighty eight. I understand that folksy rugby club. That's not
- 9:31Speaker 2: just you, obviously, there's quite a few people involved. Tell
- 9:34Speaker 2: us a little bit more about the people that are
- 9:37Speaker 2: involved with the club and you know, sponsorship and things
- 9:41Speaker 2: like that. Are you interested in trying to find sponsors
- 9:44Speaker 2: and you know things like us a little bit about that.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yeah, just in our team in general, there's a whole
- 9:51Speaker 1: host of us. I'm just one of about five or
- 9:53Speaker 1: six coaches that are regularly running sessions with the kids.
- 9:56Speaker 1: We've got someone dedicated to trying to find sponsorship. We've
- 9:59Speaker 1: got someone dedicated to making sure that we've all got
- 10:02Speaker 1: a good social life around the club. We've got a
- 10:05Speaker 1: team manager, we've got a parent rep. We've got a
- 10:07Speaker 1: whole bunch of people that just help the team function
- 10:09Speaker 1: on a on a weekly basis.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously you need all that. Yeah, it's not just
- 10:17Speaker 2: one person. I do understand that, you know, we've had
- 10:20Speaker 2: all the volunteers and that you you know, the club
- 10:23Speaker 2: just would you know, wouldn't run. We got in the
- 10:25Speaker 2: sponsorship in that, I mean, I know, Uh, I mean,
- 10:27Speaker 2: I'm quite heavily involved with folks in Victor. They've got
- 10:31Speaker 2: a fantastic sponsor and new chairman. Now, do you have
- 10:34Speaker 2: anybody big like that that backsh you or are you
- 10:38Speaker 2: looking for new sponsors or you know, tell us a
- 10:43Speaker 2: little bit about uh, you know, especially sponsorship was going
- 10:48Speaker 2: forward to how to make the club running a little
- 10:51Speaker 2: bit easier.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So just sort of talking in general about all of
- 10:56Speaker 1: the different teams that one of our one of our
- 10:57Speaker 1: jobs as coaches is that we need to go and
- 10:59Speaker 1: find sponsor a ship for things like our training kit,
- 11:02Speaker 1: et cetera. So our age groups are always looking for
- 11:05Speaker 1: particularly like local companies that would be willing to sponsor
- 11:08Speaker 1: a few hundred quid just to buy a bit of
- 11:10Speaker 1: kit for the kids, just to help us with out
- 11:12Speaker 1: with our running costs and to keep the teams going.
- 11:15Speaker 1: In return, we make sure that we advertise and we
- 11:18Speaker 1: make sure that the people are aware that they've they've
- 11:21Speaker 1: they're supporting us. They go on our website, we make
- 11:24Speaker 1: sure we put out social media posts about them, and
- 11:26Speaker 1: we wear their brand on our kit when we're training
- 11:30Speaker 1: or playing. We've been quite lucky this year with the
- 11:33Speaker 1: under thirteens that we've got three or four sponsors. We've
- 11:36Speaker 1: managed to raise about four grand in total. Our sponsorship
- 11:39Speaker 1: lead Nickers managed to do that, but I know in
- 11:42Speaker 1: the other age groups that they're still working on getting
- 11:44Speaker 1: a bit of money in for their kids. And it's
- 11:46Speaker 1: it's such a worse worthwhile thing to do for a
- 11:49Speaker 1: local business to support a local sports team. And the
- 11:52Speaker 1: level of rugby in the in the club is good
- 11:55Speaker 1: and I think it's it's quite good value for money,
- 11:58Speaker 1: to be honest, that wearing someone's on your shirt. The
- 12:00Speaker 1: kids like it and it's it's good for advertising locally.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Well, that's what you need, isn't it. You know, people
- 12:08Speaker 2: going going forward to the clubs don't run themselves today unless.
- 12:12Speaker 4: You've got a multi millions.
- 12:15Speaker 1: We've got some really good people running the club. We've
- 12:17Speaker 1: got an exec team that have been there a long
- 12:20Speaker 1: time that are well versed in what it takes to
- 12:22Speaker 1: run a rugby club. In terms of the minis and juniors.
- 12:25Speaker 1: A few years ago it was a it was a
- 12:27Speaker 1: little bit rocking, a little bit disjointed. But we've got
- 12:30Speaker 1: our minis chair Olie, and we've got our junior director
- 12:32Speaker 1: of Rugby League and over the last sort of three
- 12:35Speaker 1: or four years that the club has really improved and
- 12:38Speaker 1: really come forward in terms of the minis and juniors.
- 12:40Speaker 1: So they're doing a good job.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Well say that. That's exactly what you need, isn't it.
- 12:46Speaker 2: You need people like that going forward. Absolutely, Me being
- 12:50Speaker 2: you know, not the rouged person, I am going to
- 12:53Speaker 2: try and get over there, and especially on one Sunday
- 12:56Speaker 2: and I'm going to try and come over there. Hopefully
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah you won't I won't kick me out, and yeah
- 13:06Speaker 2: I won't be in a football kid, I'll probably I've
- 13:08Speaker 2: got I've got an England rugby shirt there you go
- 13:11Speaker 2: that I wear when we play England, especially when we
- 13:13Speaker 2: play Wales. I know that's that's the big one in
- 13:15Speaker 2: the one who played Wales, Danny Danny Cardiff. Uh, Ollie,
- 13:20Speaker 2: you've been a bit quiet there. We'll track you in here.
- 13:24Speaker 2: You need to go.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Around in the if you have to come around unfortunately,
- 13:28Speaker 4: because friends.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And that the one I love. Okay, we're back in
- 13:37Speaker 2: the studio with Ollie and Steve. Ollie, you'd like to
- 13:41Speaker 2: come around here. We've used this one. Sorry, we've done
- 13:44Speaker 2: a few little technical difficulties today, but nothing we can't
- 13:48Speaker 2: we can't handle it here. Okay then, Ollie, Yeah, explain
- 13:53Speaker 2: to me why you got into rugby rather than football.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I I think so I did start off playing football,
- 14:03Speaker 3: but I think for me there wasn't enough physicality, Like
- 14:07Speaker 3: if you tackled someone you would be penalized for it.
- 14:10Speaker 3: But in rugby you can like let it out so
- 14:14Speaker 3: and usually you're not penal lives. So that's one thing
- 14:17Speaker 3: that I enjoy about it.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Okay, So, yeah, you're a bit of a dirty player,
- 14:21Speaker 2: were you? We got We got your daddy in the
- 14:23Speaker 2: studio as well. Good morning to you, sir.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 14:26Speaker 2: And was you instrumental in rugby or are you a
- 14:31Speaker 2: football man as well or just strictly rugby.
- 14:35Speaker 6: No, definitely rugby. I think it's a great game for
- 14:38Speaker 6: the kids emotionally, mentally, physically, and I'm glad that Oli
- 14:43Speaker 6: likes it because it's very good to to support them
- 14:47Speaker 6: as well with their game rugby. For me, I can
- 14:52Speaker 6: see a lot of confidence and only growing up, and
- 14:54Speaker 6: I think it's a very good game for the children
- 14:57Speaker 6: for the confidence, physical well and mental well being as well.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally agree. I mean that, you know, obviously
- 15:05Speaker 2: everybody likes their individual sports. And do I hear a
- 15:08Speaker 2: bit of an accent there.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Yes, there is an accent. I'm originally from Egypt.
- 15:15Speaker 4: I do apologize. I thought it might be in South Africa, but.
- 15:21Speaker 2: No, I mean, obviously, you know your son's now involved
- 15:25Speaker 2: in rugby, and you obviously hope he does well, and
- 15:30Speaker 2: you can see him progressing, you know, as far as
- 15:34Speaker 2: it can. Steve you will be able to tell us
- 15:36Speaker 2: a bit more of that.
- 15:37Speaker 1: One of the things that we tell the kids, and
- 15:39Speaker 1: I tell my own son, is that if you're a
- 15:42Speaker 1: rugby player, you can be anywhere in the world. Anywhere
- 15:44Speaker 1: in the country and just walk into your local rugby
- 15:46Speaker 1: club and you've got a bunch of mates for life.
- 15:48Speaker 1: So that's why I think it's really important, why we
- 15:50Speaker 1: want as many kids involved as possible.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I understand. I mean, I know for a fact
- 15:55Speaker 2: that rugby is very, very sociable. And what is that
- 15:58Speaker 2: What goes on the field stays on the field, and
- 16:00Speaker 2: then you all have a drink afterwards and they good
- 16:02Speaker 2: sing song. I'm not saying the under thirteen should do that,
- 16:05Speaker 2: but you know, as they got old, I know it's
- 16:07Speaker 2: a very very big social thing, isn't it a rugby Yeah?
- 16:11Speaker 1: Absolutely, As you say, like you spend eighty minutes battering
- 16:15Speaker 1: each other and then you have a beer together in
- 16:16Speaker 1: the in the bar afterwards, and we try and teach
- 16:19Speaker 1: the same ethos to the kids. And as you say,
- 16:22Speaker 1: they're not drinking a beer in the bar, but we
- 16:23Speaker 1: are making sure that they sit down. The teams have
- 16:26Speaker 1: a meal together. So you sit down and have a
- 16:28Speaker 1: meal with your opposition after the game, and you just
- 16:30Speaker 1: respect the fact that you've all been spending eighty minutes
- 16:32Speaker 1: trying to batter each other.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Okay, put one more song and then we'll rounding up
- 16:38Speaker 2: with Steve and Ollie and then I'll have to give
- 16:41Speaker 2: you some all the local round up. But the next
- 16:43Speaker 2: one here now, this is in excess and this is mister.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Fie oh Wells missing.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Michael Hutchins there and in excess mister DeFi from nineteen
- 17:00Speaker 2: eighteen nine. God is it that long ago? I remember
- 17:03Speaker 2: seeing in excess at the Hemmasmithodian many many years ago. Okay,
- 17:07Speaker 2: we're going round up now with Steve and Ollie. We're
- 17:10Speaker 2: just talking while that record was on about the fixtures
- 17:13Speaker 2: they got coming up and how they are.
- 17:17Speaker 4: How you can it?
- 17:18Speaker 2: How can I say if you're a football person, like
- 17:21Speaker 2: I am, not massive rugby follow up, but I'm getting
- 17:23Speaker 2: to getting into it if you can say, like your
- 17:28Speaker 2: Arsenals and Newmania, nit is folks that are actually playing
