- 0:12Welcome to Crusade With Me, the podcast that
- 0:15challenges the status quo and explores timeless
- 0:18truths through the lens of faith. I'm your host,
- 0:21Dave, and today we're diving deep into a single
- 0:23word, one that gets tossed around so often, but
- 0:27one that we rarely stop to truly understand.
- 0:31That word is good. Well, hello, my love. Good
- 0:46morning. Groundhog Day. Right? It's like deja
- 0:52vu. This is our second round of this episode
- 0:57since I'm firing the technical advisor for the
- 1:03podcast. Yes we are. He did not hit the record
- 1:09button and we did the entire episode to the air.
- 1:17So now we're gonna try to reenact it and do it
- 1:19again. act surprised and it was good it was very
- 1:23good you had to calm me down a couple times but
- 1:27uh and now he thinks we're gonna do it exactly
- 1:32you know it's all spontaneous it's not scripted
- 1:35i know and you're right you think we're gonna
- 1:37get that exactly the same then the spirit was
- 1:42leading at times yeah i don't know we'll see
- 1:45what the spirit does this time Oh, you know what
- 1:49the spirits gonna do this time what You know
- 1:57what if we're found if we're if we are firing
- 2:00the tech guy we got to fire the cleaning lady
- 2:03too cuz Well the other day you picked up you
- 2:09move the computer and I saw dust all underneath
- 2:12the laptop Mike Oh that cleaning lady Well, look,
- 2:19and I want to be real clear and real honest.
- 2:23So the last couple of, last episode we aired,
- 2:27I think it dropped last night, and this will
- 2:31drop this coming week. We tried to, this is the
- 2:36cadence. We tried, I'm... Not working generally
- 2:41on Saturdays. So Saturdays we try to get together
- 2:43and do two or three episodes And then I schedule
- 2:48them to drop because I'm kind of busy. I work
- 2:5250 to 60 hours a week and I travel right and
- 2:57so I'm not necessarily always around and so and
- 3:05We just explained we had kovat this last week
- 3:09and We're on the men's I went to work yesterday,
- 3:15Friday, and I'm feeling much better. So I'm still
- 3:20drinking copious amounts of coffee, but it is
- 3:22Saturday. So I have converted from the coffee
- 3:26made Italian sweet cream to my coffee today is
- 3:29now Buffalo Trace bourbon cream, which I much
- 3:34more prefer. And it's morning. We usually record
- 3:36in the evening. So the voice is a little bit
- 3:39stronger this morning than last night. We have
- 3:43a little bit more energy and maybe a little less
- 3:48than the one that didn't get recorded. An hour
- 3:50ago? Sorry. But it's okay. All right, let's jump
- 3:56into Mark 10 verse 18. My beloved, could you
- 4:01read that from your... Well, I was going to do
- 4:04a little backstory of why... uh how this came
- 4:09about because this morning I was doing my morning
- 4:11reading my lint reading which I think I've shared
- 4:15before I'm I'm in mark and of course you know
- 4:17this last week I'm behind because you know covid
- 4:21will do that to you rona my my my rona um so
- 4:28obviously the challenge you know that you've
- 4:31been challenging us all to do a deeper dive,
- 4:34which is basically just don't read it, dive into
- 4:37it. So, I was reading this morning, and this
- 4:42is just one scripture that I read, one verse
- 4:47that I read, which is, and Jesus said to him,
- 4:51why do you call me good? No one is good except
- 4:54God alone. And so, it hit me, what does good
- 4:59mean, realizing that the Bible has been translated
- 5:03from the Greek? And so I came and found you and
- 5:07I said, can you do a deeper dive for me as to,
- 5:12I'm not a very techy person. I know you say you're
- 5:15not either, but you're definitely way more than
- 5:17I am. You have the resources. I said, what does
- 5:21good mean? And of course, you just lit up because
- 5:24that's your geeky thing. And you said, that's
- 5:27a good one, that's a good one. I have never been
- 5:30called a geek and you called me a geek. Anyway,
- 5:35so I feel like I took your challenge, your crusade
- 5:42to do a deeper dive. And that's why we are where
- 5:46we are now. So yesterday we did a podcast and
- 5:52I dropped last night. And I would encourage episode
- 5:5632 on Spotify, YouTube, Amazon, Apple. We stayed
- 6:03with me, it was episode 32, and I don't even
- 6:06know what we called it. What did we call the
- 6:09episode last night? Something about, oh, you
- 6:13like to have those catchy tag lines. Oh, I do?
- 6:18Something about happiness and... Don't fall for
- 6:22it or something. Oh don't buy the BS. Don't buy
- 6:26the BS and I say that because I want I Recognize
- 6:35this and I am just putting this out there to
- 6:38people. I want everybody to recognize I'm I don't
- 6:41know what happened this week, but it's kind of
- 6:43hit me. I guess while I was between meetings
- 6:46and Laying around and I spent a lot of time on
- 6:49social media this week, which I don't normally
- 6:51do And because you know why I did that because
- 6:54there's absolutely nothing on television And
- 6:59just feeling kind of miserable suffering mm -hmm
- 7:04and I just kind of got pissed off angry Just
- 7:10for lack of a better term the world's going to
- 7:13hell out of handbasket seriously, the world is
- 7:17just jacked up and I'm about tired of it. I'm
- 7:21about tired of the BS. I'm a tired of I don't
- 7:30know how to describe it, but this relativism,
- 7:34things are at stake. My little sweet pea, while
- 7:42we were, she's got some, I don't want to say
- 7:46issues, she's 10. But she had an experience with
- 7:52my daughter, her mother. when she had COVID and
- 7:56she did not go to the doctor at all and she was
- 7:58bad and actually became unresponsive that Sweet
- 8:03Pea had to jump into action, God bless her, she
- 8:07did, and was able to reach out. And we live three
- 8:10hours away, so she was able to reach out to Jim
- 8:14the horse whisperer, as I call him. It's her
- 8:17horse trainer, right? Yes, who's very local to
- 8:20them. And Jim was able to come over and get Abby,
- 8:23my princess, to the hospital, taken care of.
- 8:28And so when Sweet Pea heard that we had COVID,
- 8:32she was mightily concerned. Right. And so she
- 8:38was texting Dave on one couch and me on the other
- 8:42couch, back and forth. And so she says to, I
- 8:46mean, she's like, you know, tick. I'm just worried.
- 8:49I don't want what happened to mom to happen to
- 8:52you and Papa and I said, oh, you know, we're
- 8:54we're okay Well, you know, we're taking we're
- 8:57old but we're taking care of each other and she
- 8:59her response to me was I get that Not Mimi you're
- 9:06not old I get that She's a doll she's a doll
- 9:14but you know, she's one of five We've got the
- 9:18Fab Five. And I think I was because she was texting
- 9:23and I was thinking about my grandkids, the Fab
- 9:27Five, and thinking about the world going to hell
- 9:34in a hand basket, for lack of a better term,
- 9:36and it kind of irks me and pisses me off. And
- 9:40I'm like, what can I do about that? And this
- 9:43podcast is what I can do about that. And I am
- 9:47sick and tired because what's at stake? is the
- 9:51Fab Five. And I'll be damned if I'm gonna let...
- 9:56I gotta fight for them. And cannot let this world
- 10:04take over their worlds, which it's viciously,
- 10:09aggressively trying to do with all the BS that's
- 10:14out there in the world today. And it's so absent.
- 10:20And that's what this episode today is about.
- 10:23I was so glad that you asked me to do this deeper
- 10:25dive into that scripture because I hadn't done
- 10:28it. I hadn't. So Jesus' words are simple here.
- 10:34I'm going to just tack off of that and then we'll
- 10:37move on. And I just want to add that any persecution
- 10:41that you face because of this podcast or I face
- 10:45because of this podcast, I don't care. I don't
- 10:53either, but I wanna put this to bed, this is
- 10:55the only thing I'm gonna say about this. I stand
- 11:00beside you and I will walk through fire for you,
- 11:05for this, for the Fab Five, for our kids, and
- 11:09for my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That is
- 11:12it. Stand behind me, Satan. I'm done. That's
- 11:16it. Crusade with me. With me. I love it. So that's
- 11:21the end of that, and I won't comment on it anymore.
- 11:24No, that's beautiful. But I'm so glad that you
- 11:28came to me with the scripture, because Jesus's
- 11:31words are simple here, right? It sounds very
- 11:34innocuous, but anytime Christ speaks, it's loaded
- 11:40with implications, and then we often overlook
- 11:44those. And I've overlooked that and this. And
- 11:48what does it really mean to be good? Who determines
- 11:53what is good? And let's be honest, why does our
- 11:59world seem so confused about what goodness even
- 12:04is? So into this episode, we're going to unpack
- 12:10the Greek word used for good and dive into how
- 12:14society defines goodness and explore the dangers
- 12:18of moral relativism. and take a hard look at
- 12:22how evil is being redefined as good in our world
- 12:26today. And if you're comfortable with the truth,
- 12:31this episode will challenge you to question everything
- 12:34you thought you knew about what it means to be
- 12:39good. So grab your Bible, maybe a notebook, and
- 12:46brace yourself, because we're about to get real.
- 13:03Okay, my love, I guess we're going to jump right
- 13:06in and get started with the Greek word at Mark
- 13:0810, 18. And Jesus says, no one is good except
- 13:13God alone. The Greek word Jesus is using here
- 13:16is agathos. This word is more than just nice
- 13:20or morally accepted. It carries with it a sense
- 13:24of absolute goodness, a quality that transcends
- 13:29mere human understanding or measurement. The
- 13:32agathos is a good that is perfect, holy, and
- 13:39without blemish. It's not the kind of goodness
- 13:45that can be found in a man -made set of rules
- 13:48or standards. It's the kind of goodness that
- 13:52originates from God alone. So Jesus is challenging
- 13:58this man who's calling him good. He's asking,
- 14:03Do you understand what that means? The only God
- 14:10is perfectly good. This isn't just a theological
- 14:13statement. It's a mirror held up to our own definition
- 14:16of goodness. It's saying, if you're going to
- 14:19call me good, then you need to understand that
- 14:21goodness is defined by God, not by your own.
- 14:27That's major. And we have obviously, by your
- 14:32definition of good there, The translation the
- 14:39has been diminished Absolutely, absolutely Yeah,
- 14:45good better great, right? Mm -hmm. Absolutely
- 14:49Almost like on a survey right when you know,
- 14:54so he's a Good There's there's there's excellent
- 14:58beyond there. Sure I got a five -star, you know,
- 15:04you've got terrible or right average poor poor
- 15:10thank you average good excellent right so well
- 15:16in the greek it's agathos yeah you've got excellent
- 15:22was one of those holy holy perfect perfect without
- 15:27blemish yes that's a that's a five star plus
- 15:30right right good is a four so the agathos that's
- 15:35an important starting point Not just about being
- 15:39morally or neutral or okay, and that's what you're
- 15:43saying. Yes It's about a standard of goodness
- 15:47that only God Can give before we get too far
- 15:52into the New Testament? Let's trace the concept
- 15:55of goodness back to where it all began and the
- 15:57first chapter of the Bible You see when God created
- 16:02the world. He didn't just call his work good
- 16:04as it was just fine You and the girls like using
- 16:08the word fine Don't you? It's fine. I'm fine.
- 16:11Everything is fine, fine. You got t -shirts to
- 16:14prove it. We have a lot of t -shirts. We know
- 16:19a guy. We know a guy. We know a gal. Actually,
- 16:22not a guy. I think she is actually the one. She
- 16:25makes them. I watched her. She does it. But he
- 16:30declared it perfect, harmonious, and holy. A
- 16:37word we don't talk about much in the 21st century.
- 16:41Holy. So let's go back to the beginning. In Genesis,
- 16:45when God created the world, there's a recurring
- 16:48phrase after each act of creation. God saw that
- 16:51it was good. We first encountered this in Genesis
- 16:551 -4 when God created lights and separated it
- 16:57from the darkness. God saw that the light was
- 17:00good. I wanna be clear, the word used in Hebrew
- 17:05here for good is tav. And it appears throughout
- 17:10the creation narrative that this is significant.
- 17:13Now the Hebrew word tav, doesn't just mean good
- 17:16in the sense of being morally right or virtuous,
- 17:18but also implies something that is complete,
- 17:24suitable, and fully functioning in its purpose.
- 17:31It's a word that denotes something that is aligned
- 17:34with God's perfect will, something that reflects
- 17:37His inherent goodness. So in the Hebrew mind,
- 17:42when something was tav, it wasn't just okay or
- 17:46fine. It was as it was intended, it was as it
- 17:51is intended to be. Everything God created was
- 17:57made in perfect harmony. Nothing was lacking,
- 18:02nothing was out of place. Boy, we really screw
- 18:07that up, don't we? Seriously, I mean. Let's look
- 18:13at how this plays out in Genesis 1 -10. After
- 18:15God gathered the waters together and allows the
- 18:17dry land to appear, He calls it good. God saw
- 18:20that it was good. The creation of land and seas,
- 18:24the plants, the trees, the stars, the animals.
- 18:28God's declaration over each is that it was tov,
- 18:33perfectly aligned with His will. When God created
- 18:40humanity in Genesis 1 -31, It's written, God
- 18:45saw that all He had made, and it was very good.
- 18:51The Hebrew here is still tav, but it's amplified
- 18:56by miad, meaning underscoring that the creation
- 18:59of mankind was the pinnacle of His work, and
- 19:05it was perfect, complete, and as intended. So
- 19:15this is critical. Before sin entered the world,
- 19:22Everything that God made was tov. It was complete
- 19:33and whole. Functioning in perfect alignment with
- 19:39God's will, the goodness of creation in Genesis
- 19:42is deeply tied to God's purpose for everything
- 19:48He made. That's just... We lose sight of this.
- 19:53In our 21st century society, we lose sight of
- 19:59the fact of how connected we are, not just connected
- 20:02as humanity, but connected to all that God has
- 20:06created. We are connected to the animals. We
- 20:09are connected to the plants. We are connected
- 20:13to the water. We are connected to the stars.
- 20:19It all works in unison and it's complete. Boy,
- 20:24we try to screw that up. And we try to separate
- 20:28and we try to silo and pigeonhole and separate
- 20:33and this group and that group and I'm this and
- 20:37I'm that and you were created perfect But we
- 20:44always want to play God and be God That's the
- 20:48problem with our society today in a nutshell
- 20:50We can talk about all this other, you know episode
- 20:54last night that dropped Don't buy the BS What
- 20:59is the BS? The BS is that I'm God. We're not
- 21:02God. We are created by God. We can do it better.
- 21:11We can do it better. You know what we're really
- 21:14good at? Messing things up. Screwing shit up.
- 21:17I'm just putting it out there, seriously. It
- 21:23just angers me. And people buy this. People believe
- 21:29it. It gets me going. I can see that. I gotta
- 21:39have a sip of my coffee. Okay. So am I hearing
- 21:41this correctly? So you're saying the word changes
- 21:45slightly pre -sin and post -sin in Genesis? Well,
- 21:51no, no, no. The word is the word. The word tov
- 21:54is... Just the completeness. Yes. Well, God declared
- 22:00this was before sin. Okay. Everything is complete
- 22:03and perfect. Oh, perfect. Everything changes
- 22:05after sin. Okay. When... Satan? He was actually
- 22:15given dominion over the world. Okay. I thought
- 22:18you were saying that, which I know there's several
- 22:22different definitions of tav, or the meaning,
- 22:29not definition of meaning. Yeah, the word is...
- 22:31I thought you were saying that the variation
- 22:33of it changed just a little bit post -sin. Yeah,
- 22:36no, no, no, no, no. No. So then let's zoom forward
- 22:41to our world today. That's kind of what we're
- 22:42talking about. The idea of what is good has become
- 22:47increasingly subjective. We no longer live in
- 22:52a world where good is synonymous with what is
- 22:54increasing or what is right or virtuous according
- 22:57to God's word. Instead, goodness is whatever
- 23:00aligns with current trends, societal expectations,
- 23:05or even personal desires. So who defines goodness
- 23:09in our society today? It scares the hell out
- 23:14of me. If you ask 100 people, you'll probably
- 23:17find 100 different answers. One person may define
- 23:20goodness as being kind to others. Another might
- 23:24equate goodness with environmentalism or social
- 23:27justice. But here's the problem. All of those
- 23:33definitions are human -centered, not God -centered.
- 23:38And this is what I was trying to say and what
- 23:39I was talking about. and a postmodern world goodness
- 23:43has been detached from any eternal absolute truth.
- 23:51I love that phrase. Absolute truth. I get so
- 23:58tired of hearing it. It frosts me, it burns my
- 24:02butt. You know what burns my butt besides the
- 24:05flame three feet high? My truth. What the hell
- 24:11does that even, my truth. It's somebody's excuse
- 24:15to explain their victimness. That's brilliant.
- 24:19You're right. That is brilliant. My truth. It's
- 24:26a reason to give somebody platform to explain
- 24:28why they're a victim. That's my definition. No,
- 24:31I think that's probably perfect. I think that's
- 24:34right on the money. Every once in a while there's
- 24:37a... There's a light bulb. You're more than just
- 24:40a pretty face, my love. You're more than just
- 24:42a pretty face. Thank you, I say that to you often.
- 24:44But one thing I always used to, I have several
- 24:47different quotes, whether our children remember
- 24:48or not, but you tried to teach our children,
- 24:51you know, don't be a victim, be victorious. Correct.
- 24:57Well, but there's power in victimhood. There
- 25:00is, and probably money too. You know, because
- 25:02you talk about what your influence, influencers,
- 25:07I think. They make a lot of money. And so they
- 25:11get out there and they talk about my truth, my
- 25:15story, that's my story. And then they're making
- 25:17money off of, half the time, I don't know what
- 25:20you even know what to believe anymore, what's
- 25:23real. Because people, if they profit off of something,
- 25:26they make up stories. Correct, correct, correct.
- 25:30No, and now, see you're... We're singing out
- 25:37of the same hymnal here, baby. That's good. I
- 25:40have my own hymnal, I don't know. We all have
- 25:43our own hymnal, because we're special. It's my
- 25:47hymnal, and my truth, and my... Sorry. Sorry.
- 25:55That's how screwed up we are. I mean, seriously.
- 26:00This is where the difference between agathos
- 26:02and tav on one hand, and goodness as we define
- 26:05it today, is most evident. Both in ancient Hebrew
- 26:09culture and the New Testament Greek, goodness
- 26:12was grounded in the unchanging character of God.
- 26:20It was about reflecting the Creator's perfection
- 26:23and holiness. But today, we often define good
- 26:32by convenience, or comfort, or what fits into
- 26:37our cultural narrative. Just everything's been
- 26:43hijacked. for lack of a better term. I just feel
- 26:45like everything's been hijacked. And I'll be
- 26:49damned if I'm going to sit on a sideline and
- 26:50let this crap continue and drag my Fab Five to
- 26:56hell in the process. That ain't happening. That
- 26:59ain't happening. I think that's why we got to
- 27:00claim it. We got to claim those we love. We have
- 27:03to claim people in the name of Jesus through
- 27:06prayer, through word, through whatever means
- 27:09necessary. We gotta claim people. And why? And
- 27:12it's because we're seeing a dramatic reversal
- 27:16of good and evil in our society. What was once
- 27:19evil is now called good and what was once considered
- 27:22virtuous is now deemed intolerant. And or, you've
- 27:26heard this, outdated. Right? Yes. We've talked
- 27:31about that on this podcast. I love her. I love
- 27:33you. We've entered a time where darkness is being
- 27:39called light and light is being called darkness.
- 27:43And this just isn't happening in a vacuum. It's
- 27:47happening in the very fabric of our culture.
- 27:49Things like abortion, redefining marriage, the
- 27:57celebration of moral perversion, and the normalization
- 28:02of violence are being painted as good and progressive.
- 28:08And I will pervert it too, because I'm gonna
- 28:10tell you what, I'm capable of holy violence.
- 28:16I'm capable. Mess with my Fab Five. Mess with
- 28:20my Fab Five. Messing with my family. And I have
- 28:26an arsenal. And I mean, I will bring violence.
- 28:32And I ain't take it anymore. Isaiah 5, 20. Said
- 28:47the best. Woe to those who call evil good and
- 28:54good evil. Who put darkness for light and light
- 28:59for darkness. Who put bitter for sweet and sweet
- 29:02for bitter. When the world celebrate what God
- 29:05condemns, it's time for the church, it's time
- 29:08for crusaders to step up and say, nope, this
- 29:13is not good. We're not merely nice people trying
- 29:18to get along. I'm done with that. We've tried
- 29:24that. It ain't working. We are the light of the
- 29:29world and it's our duty to stand firm on God's
- 29:35unchanging standard of goodness. So how do we
- 29:41fight against this? How do we combat the cultural
- 29:44trend of redefining good as evil? We've talked
- 29:49about it. You said you're doing it. Number one,
- 29:55first and foremost, we must grounded in Scripture.
- 30:02The Bible is the ultimate authority on what is
- 30:04good and what is evil. And if we want to know
- 30:08what is truly good, we must know God's Word.
- 30:12the top goodness of Genesis and the agathoth
- 30:16goodness of the New Testament aren't just for
- 30:19theological debate, they're for daily living.
- 30:25Secondly, we must live in obedience to God's
- 30:31standards. Goodness isn't just for about agreeing
- 30:36with God's word, it's about living it out. And
- 30:40I know you're gonna call me a hypocrite because
- 30:41I've just threatened people with violence. So
- 30:44be it, so be it. When we align our lives with
- 30:50God's standard for goodness, we reflect his light
- 30:53in a dark world. I purport to you that violence
- 30:58against evil is actually tov. It's God's design.
- 31:05Third, we must speak the truth in love. It's
- 31:08easy to get angry or self -righteous in today's
- 31:11world. I sometimes get excited. But we need to
- 31:16remember that we are called to be ambassadors
- 31:19of Christ, so we speak the truth. And that's
- 31:22what I'm trying to do today, here and now, speak
- 31:25the truth. Oh dear. We hit that time. Do you
- 31:37have any closing thoughts? I'm just going to
- 31:42say, I don't, first of all, let me, I don't know,
- 31:45you, nevermind, I'm not even going to touch up
- 31:47with a ten -foot pole. I'm going to say that
- 31:52I am not perfect and I know you're not perfect.
- 31:59I've never claimed to be. I know, I know, you've
- 32:01said that many times. but we are trying to be
- 32:05obedient to the Word of God. As best we can.
- 32:08As best we can. And we're just sharing our thoughts
- 32:12and that's just it. There are our thoughts and
- 32:14we're sharing the Word of God and what we're
- 32:18studying. And we're just doing the best we can.
- 32:24And I want to be clear. Thank you. That's awesome.
- 32:31Just because I have a podcast. I've said this
- 32:33how many times. I'm not claiming to be perfect.
- 32:36I'm not claiming to be holier than thou as I
- 32:40just finished my fourth lucky strike for the
- 32:42day and I'm sitting here drinking my coffee and
- 32:44bourbon cream, Buffalo Trace bourbon cream. I'm
- 32:50just me, I'm just an average guy. I work for
- 32:54a living, but I want people to crusade with me
- 32:59to fight the evil because there's a generation
- 33:03at stake. That's what I'm talking about. As we
- 33:24wrap up today's episode, remember this. Goodness
- 33:26is not what society says it is. True goodness
- 33:29comes from God alone. It is seen in the perfection
- 33:33of His creation, the holiness of His character,
- 33:35and the life of teaching of Jesus Christ. The
- 33:37world may call evil good and good evil, but we
- 33:39have a choice. We will align ourselves with a
- 33:41world ever shifting definition, or we'll stand
- 33:45firm with God. I challenge you to leave this
- 33:48episode crusade with me.
