- 0:23Speaker 1: the Friday night Mixed hockey league.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We've got some rugby and football news.
- 0:35Speaker 1: We've got a little report on the mount from ten
- 0:38Speaker 1: k We've got some news from them Folkston Ski Race Club.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And we've got a little extra item. I'm going to
- 0:51Speaker 1: chuck in about the Duke of Edinburgh Ward and we
- 0:58Speaker 1: welcome back Jody Jackman into the studio to tell us
- 1:01Speaker 1: how she copes on a mammoth one hundred mile North
- 1:04Speaker 1: downs Way, a trail run. So from nineteen ninety one,
- 1:10Speaker 1: let's get crack in and start the show with Irim
- 1:13Speaker 1: and losing my religion from nineteen ninety one, there were
- 1:43Speaker 1: losing my religion from Rim. Now we've got a little
- 1:49Speaker 1: extra item on the agenda today and it's about the
- 1:52Speaker 1: Duke of Edinburgh a warts. Now it's a sort of
- 1:56Speaker 1: little phrase that rolls off the tongue.
- 1:58Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:59Speaker 1: We know it's all been around for a very long time,
- 2:01Speaker 1: but do we know anything about it now?
- 2:04Speaker 2: I don't.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And there's a little story I'm going to tell you
- 2:08Speaker 1: later about how this came to my attention so very
- 2:11Speaker 1: quickly this morning I did a little bit of a
- 2:13Speaker 1: searching on the internet and basically it's for fourteen to
- 2:17Speaker 1: twenty four year olds and there's four sections to complete
- 2:21Speaker 1: at the Bronze and silver level and five at the
- 2:24Speaker 1: Gold level. Now these days, what it means is that
- 2:27Speaker 1: they involve helping the community, the environment, becoming fitter and healthier,
- 2:32Speaker 1: developing new skills, planning and training for an expedition, and
- 2:36Speaker 1: similar stuff like that. Now, isn't the competition about being first.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It's about setting personal challenges and pushing a personal boundaries. Now,
- 2:44Speaker 1: to be a be fair, I lifted that off the website.
- 2:48Speaker 1: But with the closing of the Sports Center, I'm sure
- 2:51Speaker 1: there's some parents that might think that they need to
- 2:54Speaker 1: something extra for their teenage son or daughter, the need
- 2:58Speaker 1: to channel their energy into some thing, something to get
- 3:01Speaker 1: involved with, and I thought that how do you go
- 3:05Speaker 1: about finding out about the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. So
- 3:08Speaker 1: we're going to be asking a few questions a little
- 3:10Speaker 1: bit later. Anyway, Now, this all came about my interest
- 3:15Speaker 1: thanks to my fourteen year old neighbor Eve and her dad, Joe. Now,
- 3:20Speaker 1: they asked me the other day, Well, it was quite
- 3:21Speaker 1: a few weeks ago. To be fair, if I would
- 3:23Speaker 1: mind if Evie cooked me five different dishes under the
- 3:27Speaker 1: guidance of her dad. So of course I jumped at
- 3:29Speaker 1: the chance of being waited on for five days now
- 3:34Speaker 1: because of the nature of the occupation. If you like
- 3:38Speaker 1: being in the kitchen, her daddad to keep an eye
- 3:40Speaker 1: on her a bit of health and safety, heavy dishes
- 3:44Speaker 1: and hot stuff and all the rest of it. But
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'll tell you what she did. She prepared five dishes,
- 3:48Speaker 1: and I'm going to tell you all about them. She
- 3:51Speaker 1: prepared a lovely, lovely shepherd's pie. It was red hot,
- 3:54Speaker 1: the dish was read. It's tasted so good, you know.
- 3:57Speaker 1: But the next one, to be fair, I did. I
- 4:00Speaker 1: did tell that Joe, I wasn't too sure about this one.
- 4:03Speaker 1: It was a miso terry archy glazed tofu and rice. Well,
- 4:07Speaker 1: I had to admit I didn't know what the hell
- 4:09Speaker 1: that was. So I tried a little bit of everything
- 4:12Speaker 1: that they served me. But I did say to them,
- 4:14Speaker 1: I'm sorry, that's not my cup of tea. But it
- 4:17Speaker 1: was so well presented and everything, and the next one
- 4:20Speaker 1: was a lovely piece of baked fish which was done
- 4:22Speaker 1: in foil, and that was probably the easiest one to do.
- 4:26Speaker 1: The following day I had a perfectly cooked chicken stir
- 4:29Speaker 1: fry and that was lovely, it really was. But last
- 4:32Speaker 1: night I had a good old fashioned toad in the owl,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and this one had proper sausages from the butchers, and
- 4:38Speaker 1: proper mashed potatoes and lovely, lovely juicy gravy, which I
- 4:43Speaker 1: think I like the most. I think I preferred that
- 4:45Speaker 1: one a good old fashioned English grub. Anyway, Eve did
- 4:49Speaker 1: all the research for the recipes. The chopping, the peeling,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and the slicing all done. It was all done prepared
- 4:55Speaker 1: in the oven and no microwaves involved. We had to
- 4:58Speaker 1: take some pictures of the dishes with the two of us,
- 5:01Speaker 1: obviously for her coursework or whatever it is they do.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And as I said, it was under the guidance of
- 5:06Speaker 1: her dad Joe, because we didn't want to chop in
- 5:10Speaker 1: any fingers off and ending up in my chicken stir
- 5:12Speaker 1: fry or anything like that. But she did a great
- 5:16Speaker 1: job out there, and I want to say well done
- 5:18Speaker 1: to you.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Ev.
- 5:20Speaker 1: It really was an excellent exercise and I'm glad I
- 5:23Speaker 1: was the guinea pig. So anybody out there has either
- 5:27Speaker 1: done the Duke of Edinburgh Awards or been through them,
- 5:30Speaker 1: or does anybody out there got any contact?
- 5:32Speaker 2: How do you get in touch?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Is there a local branch or what is it you
- 5:35Speaker 1: do to get involved to get started? And please please
- 5:39Speaker 1: get hold of me via my Facebook page Kevin Daily
- 5:42Speaker 1: and send me a little message.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And so there you go.
- 5:46Speaker 1: That's all about the Duke of Edinburgh and it was
- 5:47Speaker 1: a pleasant surprise to do that last minute. A bit
- 5:50Speaker 1: of research this morning. Now, I've been checking out our
- 5:53Speaker 1: playlist and I found this lovely, lovely song. I was
- 5:55Speaker 1: looking for songs with you know, stir Frye and I
- 5:58Speaker 1: couldn't find one. Tony Old couldn't find one, but I
- 6:02Speaker 1: found this one is by a group called Limy and
- 6:05Speaker 1: Family Cooking, so we would change that to Evi and
- 6:07Speaker 1: Family Cooking, and is called you can do Magic.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Folkston's radio station Radio Folkson.
- 6:26Speaker 4: You took the rain dressed field.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Where you go, That's what Evie did for the last
- 6:40Speaker 1: five days. She did magic and that was by Limmy
- 6:43Speaker 1: and Family Cooking. Okay, jump for a bit of a
- 6:46Speaker 1: cricket now, we start with Folkston folks in first eleven
- 6:50Speaker 1: were they batted first, making two hundred and sixty nine
- 6:54Speaker 1: for eight in their fifty overs. Chin May Suit are
- 6:57Speaker 1: making one hundred and twenty five, but they were playing
- 6:59Speaker 1: the scene od Quacko. We're going to that in a minute.
- 7:02Speaker 1: They bowled them out then for one hundred and seventy five,
- 7:05Speaker 1: winning the game by ninety four runs, putting them back
- 7:08Speaker 1: top of the table as Bromley Common, who are now
- 7:10Speaker 1: in second place, were beaten by kings Hill or our
- 7:13Speaker 1: third This week is an away trip to fourth place Gravesend.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So another test, tough test, and the mystery of what
- 7:20Speaker 1: od quaco stands for is an amalgamation of two cricket teams.
- 7:25Speaker 1: It was the Old Dunstonians and the Commercial Union they
- 7:28Speaker 1: joined together and so od Quacko stands for the Old
- 7:31Speaker 1: Dunstonians Commercial Union Assurance Company cricket team. So a big
- 7:36Speaker 1: thank you to everybody there at O d Quacko, because
- 7:39Speaker 1: I did get in touch with them and did ask
- 7:41Speaker 1: them and they got back to me on that one.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Moving on, Hawkins visited top of the table Sheppy last
- 7:47Speaker 1: week but found them on top of the table form
- 7:50Speaker 1: bat in first and making two hundred and fourteen. Hawkins
- 7:53Speaker 1: were then bowled out for eighty one, losing by one
- 7:55Speaker 1: hundred and thirty three runs. This Saturday is a home
- 7:59Speaker 1: game against Bapchi which means a trip to sitting Ball
- 8:02Speaker 1: Hawkings and our sixth and a Bapchild are tenth out
- 8:05Speaker 1: of ten teams. Hive Cricket Club were put into bat
- 8:09Speaker 1: by Nelson Cricket Club over there in Thanet and they
- 8:12Speaker 1: made one hundred and sixty eight for eight. I have
- 8:14Speaker 1: then easily made one hundred and sixty nine for two,
- 8:17Speaker 1: winning the game by eight wickets. On Saturday, They're welcome
- 8:21Speaker 1: Worth to the grove. Hive are currently top and Worth
- 8:24Speaker 1: our bottom. However, Worth may be bottom club but in
- 8:28Speaker 1: an exciting high scoring game last week against Hive Green,
- 8:32Speaker 1: Worth batted first, making two hundred and thirty for eight
- 8:35Speaker 1: in their forty overs. So I did Bukari, scoring one
- 8:38Speaker 1: hundred and one not out. The Green then, even with
- 8:42Speaker 1: the help of Emmanuel Burns one hundred and fourteen not out,
- 8:45Speaker 1: couldn't quite make it as they scored two hundred and
- 8:48Speaker 1: twenty eight in their forty overs. So that must have
- 8:51Speaker 1: been one last tense over that last over and so
- 8:55Speaker 1: Worth won the game by just about two runs. So
- 8:58Speaker 1: this week the Green are home to Folkeston third eleven.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Silward lost at home to Kennington by four wickets. This
- 9:07Speaker 1: week they're away to Edgerton. This is a bit of
- 9:10Speaker 1: a kind of a mid table clash really. Editon of
- 9:13Speaker 1: fifth and Saltwood r seventh Simpton Park had a fine
- 9:16Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty one sorry, a one hundred and
- 9:20Speaker 1: twenty run victory at home against Ashford Town. Next up
- 9:24Speaker 1: it's an away game against a Moat cricket club, which
- 9:27Speaker 1: means a trip to Maidstown Maidstone. Now Saturday looks bright
- 9:31Speaker 1: and breezy with no rainfall costs, so we should get
- 9:34Speaker 1: all our local games in without any interruption. Hopefully there'll
- 9:37Speaker 1: be a no rain stop play. Okay, time, little bit
- 9:40Speaker 1: of music and this one is Color Blast by Killer,
- 10:01Speaker 1: Color Blast and Killer. Right now, my special guest today
- 10:06Speaker 1: is a lady Runner who was in the studio just
- 10:09Speaker 1: two weeks ago, but so much has happened in that
- 10:11Speaker 1: short pace of time I just had to ask her back.
- 10:14Speaker 2: So welcome back, Jody Jackman. How are you, Jody?
- 10:16Speaker 5: Hi, Kevin, thank you very much for having me back.
- 10:18Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Yeah, right, and then we've got so much to talk
- 10:21Speaker 1: about this morning. Now, I think we've kind of got
- 10:24Speaker 1: over the fact, you know that we know that you
- 10:28Speaker 1: attempted to run one hundred miles last time you were in,
- 10:32Speaker 1: so so we just kind of turned the clock back now.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And first of all, we're just think about you've done
- 10:39Speaker 1: all the training, you've you know, you've done all the prep,
- 10:42Speaker 1: but now you've got to get up, get yourself up
- 10:44Speaker 1: there for race day. So I mean, what happened the
- 10:48Speaker 1: day before and just before the race? Did you go
- 10:50Speaker 1: up and stay up there?
- 10:51Speaker 5: I tend to travel the day before the race just
- 10:55Speaker 5: because I can't go and tear mytorways are going to
- 10:57Speaker 5: be clear enough. I think it took us coasted to
- 11:00Speaker 5: three hours to get up to Farnham. So yeah, so
- 11:04Speaker 5: I'm glad we went up the day before. I have
- 11:07Speaker 5: lists of what I need to take, so I have
- 11:10Speaker 5: all my mandatory kick list, A tick each item as
- 11:13Speaker 5: it goes in my bag, so I know that I've
- 11:15Speaker 5: definitely got it.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Is that is that actually checked on a judico or
- 11:19Speaker 1: is it just kind of down to you, you know,
- 11:20Speaker 1: like the phones and charges.
- 11:22Speaker 5: They do do random kit checks They don't necessarily check
- 11:26Speaker 5: every item on there, but they will check that you've
- 11:29Speaker 5: got at least a few of the items on there.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So okay, so you've got all your stuff to give up.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Now.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I saw a picture of you with a toaster under
- 11:38Speaker 2: your arm.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Is that right? Yes, that's a picture that was definitely
- 11:44Speaker 5: a toaster under my arm. I had to pre warn
- 11:46Speaker 5: my husband. I had contacted the hotel and the breakfast
- 11:51Speaker 5: wasn't available till half seven in the morning. Okay, yeah,
- 11:54Speaker 5: one in a toasted bagel with peanut butter and banana,
- 11:58Speaker 5: because that's what I've been using for fuel in There
- 12:01Speaker 5: was no guarantee I could have access to a toaster,
- 12:03Speaker 5: so I took my own into hotel whe.
- 12:07Speaker 2: And they didn't mind the end.
- 12:08Speaker 5: They didn't see it going. We put a socko for
- 12:11Speaker 5: the smoke alarm in case in case I burnt anything.
- 12:14Speaker 5: I won't everyone up at five am?
- 12:17Speaker 1: Right, that's good, good chat. Well we blank that bit
- 12:20Speaker 1: out when the podcast comes out. Okay, so you managed
- 12:25Speaker 1: to get your breakfast all right? And then how far
- 12:26Speaker 1: were you from the start?
- 12:28Speaker 5: It was probably about ten minute drive from the start.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It's nice in place right now. How many approximately how
- 12:35Speaker 2: many turned.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Up to do this? Mad I think they said there
- 12:39Speaker 5: was two hundred and six starters, and now I think
- 12:42Speaker 5: it was between a thirty five forty percent drop out
- 12:45Speaker 5: right on the day.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Oh, I see, thirty five never made it on the day.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Yeah, those figures are probably about right because ever since COVID,
- 12:53Speaker 1: you know, I've done a lot of races, and I
- 12:55Speaker 1: get all the race numbers.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And the people that turn up and the people that enter.
- 13:00Speaker 2: You're right, it's probably about I think it.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Was two hundred and fifty entered, two hundred and sixty
- 13:05Speaker 5: two hundred and six made the start line, and then
- 13:08Speaker 5: over that course not everyone got to one hundred one
- 13:12Speaker 5: hundred and four miles.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Okay, we come to that shortly. So right, you've got
- 13:17Speaker 1: two hundred people on the start line, and do they
- 13:19Speaker 1: go off in waves? But at a time it was
- 13:21Speaker 1: a mass start.
- 13:22Speaker 5: I think post COVID it used to be in waves,
- 13:26Speaker 5: but we seem to have gone back to doing a.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Mass star now, which is nice. I wonder with an
- 13:30Speaker 1: event like that they might you might do waves, but no, no,
- 13:34Speaker 1: that's fine. So really you've got to be careful where
- 13:37Speaker 1: you're getting that wave, don't you, Because you don't want
- 13:38Speaker 1: to be to even those a long distance.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Was it a narrow path to start? It was?
- 13:44Speaker 5: It was quite congested, I would say for about the
- 13:46Speaker 5: first three or four miles. It seemed to be quite
- 13:48Speaker 5: bunched up. Yeah, but it was good because it does
- 13:51Speaker 5: stop you going out too fast and really helps raining
- 13:55Speaker 5: you in a little bit.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that's those first few miles I'm sure are most important.
- 14:00Speaker 1: So how far did you go before you got, if
- 14:03Speaker 1: you like, a proper stop.
- 14:07Speaker 5: I would say fifty miles. It was my first significantly Yeah,
- 14:11Speaker 5: first significant stop. And most of the time I've got
- 14:14Speaker 5: sandwich bags in my race. First I will go into
- 14:17Speaker 5: an aid station chucks and food and get my water
- 14:20Speaker 5: bottles topped up and go straight away.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I see.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So these aide stations weren't place to sit down and
- 14:27Speaker 1: put you, you know, have a little rest. But I
- 14:31Speaker 1: was choosing not too Yeah, yeah, okay, So I started
- 14:35Speaker 1: at seven and fifty miles.
- 14:39Speaker 2: What time?
- 14:39Speaker 5: What sort of time did you get to I think
- 14:41Speaker 5: that was about half seven in the evening, half seven
- 14:46Speaker 5: eight o'clockis.
- 14:46Speaker 2: In the evening.
- 14:47Speaker 5: It about twelve and a half hours I think when
- 14:50Speaker 5: I went through the fifty mile mark.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and with the organizers. I mean it's such a
- 14:56Speaker 1: massive logistical event. But these people, we will tell you
- 15:00Speaker 1: our Centurion Running seems to have a great pedigree, a
- 15:03Speaker 1: great background for organizing these mass events. It was there
- 15:07Speaker 1: was there a cutoff time for any certain distances.
- 15:10Speaker 5: And there was cut off times at each different checkpoint.
- 15:13Speaker 5: I had a little print out that I'd laminated, kept
- 15:16Speaker 5: it in my short pocket so I could just keep
- 15:19Speaker 5: an eye on where I was, making sure I was
- 15:21Speaker 5: still well ahead of the checkpoints. I think I went
- 15:24Speaker 5: through halfway and I was still two hours ahead of
- 15:27Speaker 5: the cutoff.
- 15:27Speaker 1: So that was that was reassuring, right, Well, I mean
- 15:31Speaker 1: it must be a bit worrying if you're getting close
- 15:33Speaker 1: to it. I don't know how strict they are, but
- 15:34Speaker 1: if you're getting close to the halfway point and you just.
- 15:37Speaker 5: They are very strict. Yeah, if you miss it, you're
- 15:40Speaker 5: not arolloud to continue there.
- 15:42Speaker 2: So heart breaking after all that training, but there you go.
- 15:44Speaker 1: It's put there for your own health and safety years
- 15:46Speaker 1: and yeah, okay, so after fifty miles, if you like,
- 15:52Speaker 1: the hard work beginns, doesn't it.
- 15:54Speaker 2: And what was that first fifty miles terrain like.
- 15:59Speaker 5: It was, Oh quite care. I'm just trying to think that.
- 16:02Speaker 5: I think my brain has actually blocked a lot of
- 16:04Speaker 5: the course out South Downs Way, I seem to remember
- 16:08Speaker 5: much more. All I know of this course. It was
- 16:11Speaker 5: very gnarly, lots of rocks, lots of tree roots, lots
- 16:14Speaker 5: of steps going both up and down, so it's really
- 16:18Speaker 5: really tough.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 5: A lot of people who complete South Downs one hundred,
- 16:24Speaker 5: they don't then go on to finish North Doowns one hundred,
- 16:27Speaker 5: so it is significantly tough for us.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Of course, right, Yeah, I suppose it's a little feather
- 16:33Speaker 1: in your cap for you because you've done the both
- 16:35Speaker 1: of them. Yeah, yeah, excellent, And did you have any
- 16:40Speaker 1: mishaps on the course?
- 16:41Speaker 5: So anytime I fell over twice within about five minutes,
- 16:46Speaker 5: I think I was about twenty twenty two miles in
- 16:50Speaker 5: and I did hit the ground significantly. I've still got
- 16:53Speaker 5: a lump on one elbow, bruising to my stomach. At
- 16:56Speaker 5: one point I ended up with gritting my teeth, so
- 16:58Speaker 5: I'm quite fortunate you've got Yeah, I'm still fortunate to
- 17:02Speaker 5: have a full set of teeth.
- 17:04Speaker 1: That's true grit. Okay, So we get past the fifty
- 17:08Speaker 1: and what time would that be? Seven to seven? So
- 17:11Speaker 1: probably getting dark at about eight or nine o'clock.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I think it was about half eight nine issues getting dark.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But the sun did come up. The weather was quite pleasant.
- 17:21Speaker 5: It wasn't I don't call it being really bright direct sunlight.
- 17:25Speaker 5: It was very very humid, but we had a little
- 17:28Speaker 5: cloud cover which was actually quite pleasant to run him.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Yeah, So that that dark period, when I say dark
- 17:37Speaker 1: at nighttime, is that a bit worrying for you? Was
- 17:40Speaker 1: you running with anybody had a pace?
- 17:41Speaker 5: My friend John had come up from Hayward's Teeth. He
- 17:45Speaker 5: met mer Oxford, which is fifty four and a half miles,
- 17:48Speaker 5: and he run through the finish with me.
- 17:50Speaker 2: That's very real assuring for you, wasn't it.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 17:53Speaker 2: So what was his name?
- 17:54Speaker 5: John?
- 17:55Speaker 2: John?
- 17:55Speaker 1: Okay, thank you very much John for looking after Jody. Right,
- 17:59Speaker 1: so the sun's comeing up. Does it give you a
- 18:01Speaker 1: little boost to think I've either got through the night
- 18:03Speaker 1: or do you think, oh my, we'd still got going.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 18:07Speaker 5: You remember my brain was all over the place. It
- 18:11Speaker 5: was a bit like good, it's daylight. We're in We're
- 18:13Speaker 5: into the final bit. Obviously, we crossed Jade's Bridge, at
- 18:17Speaker 5: debt Ling and someone had said it early on, if
- 18:20Speaker 5: you've made Jade's Bridge, you will finish it, right, So
- 18:24Speaker 5: but it's eighty two miles and still knowing you've got
- 18:26Speaker 5: another twenty two yeah miles to go.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it did all your all your sort of battery
- 18:33Speaker 1: operated phones and GPS and that, and did they all
- 18:36Speaker 1: work all right?
- 18:37Speaker 2: Yeah, even over that long period.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 5: I did take a power bank with me. I picked
- 18:42Speaker 5: that up when I picked my pacer up, just in
- 18:44Speaker 5: case I needed a charge at any point. I gave
- 18:47Speaker 5: my watch a little bit of a charge I think
- 18:49Speaker 5: at Ranscomb, which was about seventy six seventy miles.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Right, Okay, so we're heading downhill. Now, what was the
- 19:00Speaker 2: second half of the course, Like, can you remember.
- 19:02Speaker 5: Rocks three routes? Yeah, it was just so tough underfoot.
- 19:09Speaker 5: I know when i'd rerecord the last half there was
- 19:11Speaker 5: me trotting along going, oh, these are some nice runnaball
- 19:13Speaker 5: sections and true to what we said on the training runs, Yeah,
- 19:18Speaker 5: my legs weren't feeling running at that point.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Right, So let's move right on then to the sort
- 19:24Speaker 1: of last It must be so disheartening when your GPS
- 19:30Speaker 1: comes around and you've done one hundred miles, You've done
- 19:32Speaker 1: the North Down's one hundred miles, but you still got
- 19:34Speaker 1: was three miles ago, was it?
- 19:36Speaker 5: It was closer to one hundred and four, was Yeah,
- 19:38Speaker 5: by the time I got back. Yeah, I was aware
- 19:41Speaker 5: of that before I started, so I knew. Don't look
- 19:45Speaker 5: at it and think, oh, it's one hundred miles and
- 19:48Speaker 5: then get disheartened. You just got to keep going.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Yeah, right now, I purposely went outside the stadium and
- 19:56Speaker 1: I was watching some runners coming in, and actually I
- 19:59Speaker 1: had to end up com marshal because the entrance to
- 20:02Speaker 1: the stadium was actually past the main the main gate,
- 20:05Speaker 1: wasn't it. Yeah, So I helped a few, So no,
- 20:07Speaker 1: you've got to go around there. But I saw you
- 20:09Speaker 1: and you gave me a lovely hug, and it was
- 20:13Speaker 1: so emotional we both nearly ended up with tears. So
- 20:18Speaker 1: then you had their last little bit. You met your
- 20:20Speaker 1: family on the corner. Just tell us what it was
- 20:23Speaker 1: like to come in. I know the stadium was quiet,
- 20:25Speaker 1: and but you know, we've both run into sort of
- 20:30Speaker 1: stadium to Julie rosebyfore now.
- 20:31Speaker 2: But that must have been one special man, and it's.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Just brilliant knowing you've got this one little lap and
- 20:37Speaker 5: that's it. It's done. You've got your buckle. Knowing your
- 20:40Speaker 5: family and friends they're obviously seeing out seeing you outside
- 20:44Speaker 5: the stadium. Took a while for me to recognize who
- 20:46Speaker 5: you were and think you lose that way you ent me.
- 20:49Speaker 5: I think I was just tired and confused by that point.
- 20:54Speaker 1: It's easy than when people see me get tired and
- 20:56Speaker 1: confused anyway, So by this time I was by the
- 21:00Speaker 1: finish line, and all of a sudden you gained a
- 21:03Speaker 1: whole new family. Then you're not new family, but all
- 21:05Speaker 1: you gained your family as they all did one last little.
- 21:08Speaker 5: That with Yeah, my kids run with me, and my
- 21:11Speaker 5: cousin and her kids came up as well, so I
- 21:14Speaker 5: had her liplands running around the track with me as well,
- 21:17Speaker 5: which is lovely.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Well, there was a nice little gesture at the end
- 21:21Speaker 1: because a very special lady was waiting for you to finish.
- 21:24Speaker 1: All the family kind of disappeared, So tell us what
- 21:26Speaker 1: I am.
- 21:26Speaker 5: Then my land whose eighty eight was stood on the
- 21:29Speaker 5: finish line. She's never seen me do one of my
- 21:32Speaker 5: big races before because I'm generally away from home because
- 21:36Speaker 5: of the time of day was she was up awake
- 21:38Speaker 5: and out of bed, so my mum had brought her
- 21:40Speaker 5: to Ashford. Say my land managed to finish and cross
- 21:43Speaker 5: the line with me.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, no, We've got some great pictures of that
- 21:47Speaker 1: magic moment. And now you refer to your buckle. But
- 21:51Speaker 1: it's kind of a memento medal, isn't it. But it's
- 21:53Speaker 1: a little bit different. Tell us what it looks like.
- 21:56Speaker 1: We will get a picture of it and put it
- 21:57Speaker 1: on my Facebook page.
- 21:58Speaker 5: It is a buckle that you can actually attached to
- 22:01Speaker 5: a belt, so it's sort of more an oval shape.
- 22:04Speaker 5: It has got a centurion engraved on it.
- 22:07Speaker 2: It's got the race and are you going to put
- 22:10Speaker 2: it on a special bill or are you going to I'm.
- 22:12Speaker 5: Probably going to frame it in a box frame. I've
- 22:14Speaker 5: kept my race number as well, put up in a
- 22:17Speaker 5: nice frame.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Right, excellent. I mean it's been a great journey, Joe.
- 22:22Speaker 2: It's not over yet.
- 22:23Speaker 1: But now we were chatting afterwards and I did a
- 22:29Speaker 1: little interview which is on my podcast if you want
- 22:32Speaker 1: to track that down. And everything was fine. I went home,
- 22:37Speaker 1: your family started drifting off, your husband had to go
- 22:39Speaker 1: to work.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Tell us what happened?
- 22:41Speaker 5: Next I decided to go for a shower. I had
- 22:45Speaker 5: a nice little natter with some of the ladies down
- 22:47Speaker 5: in the shower room, sort of started getting myself ready
- 22:51Speaker 5: to go in the shower, put my towel around me,
- 22:53Speaker 5: and then I wasn't very well at all and felt
- 22:57Speaker 5: very very very sick, very dizzy. I ended up laying
- 23:00Speaker 5: I put myself down on the floor so I didn't
- 23:03Speaker 5: fall down on the floor. Yeah, and I ended up
- 23:06Speaker 5: having to have the event medics come in and see me.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Oh dear, so do you remember anything after that? What happened? Then?
- 23:16Speaker 5: It was a little bit of a blur. They took
- 23:18Speaker 5: my blood pressure, remember that, being very very low. I
- 23:21Speaker 5: think it was about eighty five over fifty one, which
- 23:24Speaker 5: was a concern. I had an ECG DNE. There was
- 23:28Speaker 5: something not right there. Yeah. I was really quite poorly
- 23:32Speaker 5: at that stage.
- 23:33Speaker 2: And where did you end up? Then?
- 23:34Speaker 5: They ended up having to cut me off to the
- 23:36Speaker 5: William Harvey Hospital. Yeah, yeah, yeah, So what was the diagnosis?
- 23:41Speaker 5: Something called rabdomielosis. It's basically skeletal muscles broken down. It
- 23:47Speaker 5: releases proteins into your blood and your kidneys can't process it.
- 23:52Speaker 5: So I mean the staff at the William Harvey. I
- 23:55Speaker 5: know some of our hospitals get flack, but they were
- 23:58Speaker 5: absolutely outstanding. Cannot praise them enough for my care.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Right, And is this just through to I mean, what's
- 24:07Speaker 1: the cause? Obviously you'd run one hundred miles, but is
- 24:10Speaker 1: it something in your body breaks down?
- 24:12Speaker 5: I don't think I'll ever really know the cause. It
- 24:15Speaker 5: could have been the heat and the humidity, it could
- 24:17Speaker 5: have been the distance. The week before obviously I had
- 24:20Speaker 5: a bit of a shock on my job news, so
- 24:23Speaker 5: it could have been stressed related to that. We don't
- 24:27Speaker 5: honestly know, right, So how long was you in William Harvey.
- 24:33Speaker 5: I went in Sunday afternoon and I finally got let
- 24:37Speaker 5: out on Tuesday evening, probably.
- 24:39Speaker 1: About six in the evening. We were watching you for
- 24:41Speaker 1: like two nights then, yes, yeah, And how do you
- 24:45Speaker 1: feel now?
- 24:45Speaker 2: Then?
- 24:47Speaker 5: I'm definitely on the ND. I've been doing quite a
- 24:49Speaker 5: bit of walking. I'm still very tired, but it is
- 24:53Speaker 5: what only ten days or so out of the race.
- 24:56Speaker 5: It's not even two weeks, so it's to be expected.
- 24:59Speaker 5: So I've just got to be very careful. Rest lots
- 25:03Speaker 5: carry on with hydrating, and it's good.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Food and we were talking off.
- 25:08Speaker 1: You've got a message to pass on to other runners
- 25:11Speaker 1: that don't feel well.
- 25:12Speaker 5: Perhaps, yes, if you have done any kind of particularly
- 25:16Speaker 5: long distance event, this rab demilosis can be characterized with
- 25:21Speaker 5: dark color during I did not have that. I hydrated well,
- 25:25Speaker 5: everything seemed okay. It was just the being sick and
- 25:32Speaker 5: the feeling very faint. If you feel that, please go
- 25:35Speaker 5: and get blood pressure checks. Maybe just ask for a
- 25:39Speaker 5: quick blood test, get checked over. Please don't become a casualty.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Right excellent, Well, Jody, it's been keep saying, it's been
- 25:47Speaker 1: a wonderful journey. It's even longer journey for you.
- 25:49Speaker 2: But thank you. You're very brave to come back in today.
- 25:53Speaker 1: We did ask you, you know, sort very carefully if
- 25:55Speaker 1: you did mine speaking about the hospitalization, and it's good
- 26:00Speaker 1: for you to share it. And it's also good for
- 26:02Speaker 1: people to think out there that well, people might think
- 26:06Speaker 1: you're like superhuman. We're all pretty human after all that, Jody,
- 26:12Speaker 1: until the next one, keep you quiet, get plenty of rests,
- 26:15Speaker 1: and I'm sure when you start feeling better and more
- 26:17Speaker 1: active and you have something else up.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Your sleep, definitely, thank you. Kevin.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Okay, thanks Holds, you're on there are you ready for love? Okay?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Now we've still got loads to get through, and to
- 26:46Speaker 1: be honest, I don't know if I'm going to do
- 26:48Speaker 1: it this week. It's been so interesting up to now. Anyway,
- 26:51Speaker 1: we're going to talk about the Folks and Ski Race
- 26:54Speaker 1: Club right now. One club that said he lost the
- 26:57Speaker 1: use of their facilities due to the sports center closing
- 27:00Speaker 1: is the Folkston Ski Race Club, who used a dry
- 27:03Speaker 1: ski slope. However, the club is itself is still very
- 27:06Speaker 1: much alive and traveled to Chatham a couple of weeks
- 27:09Speaker 1: ago to compete in the Snow Sports South races and
- 27:13Speaker 1: came home with several notable performances. There was podium finishes
- 27:17Speaker 1: for Jane, she was first a master's female, Richard third
- 27:22Speaker 1: master's third master's male, Selena was second under twenty one female,
- 27:28Speaker 1: and congratulations go to Archie for winning all his head
- 27:31Speaker 1: to head races and Alicia, who missed out on a
- 27:34Speaker 1: podium finish but was fifth female and mini overall. Now,
- 27:39Speaker 1: these excellent results have come after a miserable time lately,
- 27:42Speaker 1: but proved that the Folks and Ski Race Club can
- 27:45Speaker 1: still compete and win things. Unfortunately, they if they want
- 27:48Speaker 1: to train regularly they will now have to travel to
- 27:51Speaker 1: Chatham and they are one of the many victims of
- 27:55Speaker 1: the closure of the sports center. So it's been a
- 27:58Speaker 1: little bit quiet in the newslate. But let's just hope
- 28:00Speaker 1: the administrators are working behind the scenes and come up
- 28:04Speaker 1: with a positive result. Okay, a bit of mixed league
- 28:08Speaker 1: hockey news now. Last Friday evening saw the final group
- 28:11Speaker 1: games completed. In Group one, Maystone Iguana Dons beat Cliftonville
- 28:15Speaker 1: four to three and in Group two ash For Tigers
- 28:18Speaker 1: beat South Saxon's four to one. So next Friday we
- 28:21Speaker 1: go into two weeks of playoffs before the finals night
- 28:24Speaker 1: on the thirtieth of August. So if six teams in
- 28:26Speaker 1: each group, I will read out the tables starting with
- 28:29Speaker 1: the bottom clubs. In Group one sixth place where Ashford Sharks.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Fifth was the Ops Blue Team, Fourth were Keen Police,
- 28:36Speaker 1: third with Canterbury Green Team second with Cliftonville and top
- 28:40Speaker 1: of the table were Maystone Iguana Dons. In Group two
- 28:44Speaker 1: we have a sixth place was Ops White team. In
- 28:48Speaker 1: fifth was the Ashford Tigers, in fourth was the Mainstone Lions,
- 28:52Speaker 1: Third was the Saxons South Saxon Sorry seconds was the
- 28:56Speaker 1: Ops Under twenty one team and top of the table
- 28:58Speaker 1: in Group two was Canterbury, a red team. Now the
- 29:02Speaker 1: playoff system goes like this, it's fifth versus sixth across
- 29:06Speaker 1: the two groups this Friday, then the week after is
- 29:09Speaker 1: first versus fourth and second versus third across the groups.
- 29:14Speaker 1: So it means that this Friday the Ops Blue team.
- 29:16Speaker 1: This is a a bit spooky. This's how this draws
- 29:18Speaker 1: worked out. The Folks on Optimist Blue team will play
- 29:22Speaker 1: the Folks and Optimist White team and the other playoff
- 29:25Speaker 1: game is between the Ashford Sharks and they will be
- 29:28Speaker 1: playing the Ashford Tigers. So I just want to say
- 29:32Speaker 1: a big thank you once again to Amy, our Folks
- 29:35Speaker 1: and Optimist media guru. Okay, time for a bit of music.
- 29:39Speaker 1: There we will squeeze in a song if we can.
- 29:41Speaker 1: And this is an O two and O two feeling
- 29:44Speaker 1: and sown.
- 29:48Speaker 5: GI Mi the song and I'll sing it. Luck Am,
- 29:54Speaker 5: give me the words and I'll say them like am.
- 30:05Speaker 2: There you go? That was the feeling.
- 30:06Speaker 1: It's funny it says two feelings sown and I should
- 30:10Speaker 1: know I did actually see the feeling at the two
- 30:14Speaker 1: A great evening that was as well. They were frontlining
- 30:19Speaker 1: for Jeff Lynn and the Elo as well, and they
- 30:22Speaker 1: were brilliant. Right, Okay, enough talking more sport. Rugby News
- 30:27Speaker 1: focused on Rugby Club play their first preseason friendly on
- 30:30Speaker 1: Saturday when they take a team to Dartford Valley Rugby
- 30:33Speaker 1: Club for a twelve thirty kickoff. Last season, after a
- 30:36Speaker 1: good first half of the season, they fell away a bit,
- 30:38Speaker 1: losing important games, but still finished fourth. This time around,
- 30:42Speaker 1: I think they'd be They're going to tighten up and
- 30:44Speaker 1: be a bit more consistent now. Their opponents on Saturday,
- 30:47Speaker 1: Dartford Valley played in the same league and finished tenth
- 30:50Speaker 1: out of twelve teams. But the first run out of
- 30:52Speaker 1: the preseason means that getting fit and trying new things
- 30:55Speaker 1: and personnel on the pitch. Quick bit of football news
- 30:59Speaker 1: now focusing started the season in front of eight hundred
- 31:01Speaker 1: and fifty five fans with a one all draw against
- 31:05Speaker 1: carl Shulton Athletic. Tuesday evening, they visited the Crabble to
- 31:08Speaker 1: play Dover Athletic, final score being a three too thrilling
- 31:12Speaker 1: victory for Invictor and the next game is away at
- 31:16Speaker 1: Wingate and Finchley. But don't forget to tune in on
- 31:20Speaker 1: Saturday between ten and eleven. Adidwks who's doing his sports
- 31:25Speaker 1: show now on Saturday, went to both of these games
- 31:27Speaker 1: and he would give you a full report on both
- 31:29Speaker 1: of them. Hid Tawn won their first league game of
- 31:32Speaker 1: the season, beat in Phoenix Sports two to one. They
- 31:36Speaker 1: now don't have a game until the twenty fourth. But
- 31:38Speaker 1: the big shot news was the resignation of Sammy Moore
- 31:41Speaker 1: who was the manager, and that took immediate effect. No
- 31:45Speaker 1: explanation was given, but the club did move in very
- 31:48Speaker 1: quickly and signed up Nick Davis who's got a lot
- 31:51Speaker 1: of managerial skill at that level. And so good luck
- 31:54Speaker 1: to Nick and all the people down there at the
- 31:56Speaker 1: reach Fields. And finally Hawkinstown lost their first game of
- 32:00Speaker 1: the season three two home to a Metro Gas. This
- 32:03Speaker 1: Saturday they're at home again, this time to Sporting Club
- 32:06Speaker 1: Thamesmead reserves right bit of music again.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Let's listen to Blue Cantrail and Breathe.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Really Big.

- 32:50Speaker 1: fifteen seconds ahead of second A runner James Pottle, but
- 32:54Speaker 1: James was being chased by Elliot King, who was just
- 32:57Speaker 1: another four seconds behind. Two others took part. John Clayson

- 33:29Speaker 1: runner Mark Schleuhman, who won the Male Vet seventy award
- 33:33Speaker 1: in a time of fifty two minutes, seventeen seconds, and
- 33:36Speaker 1: he was a bit of a family affair from the
- 33:38Speaker 1: Deal tri Club with Sally and Andy Russell crossing the
- 33:42Speaker 1: line together, as.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Did Louise and Paulie Ludwig.
- 33:46Speaker 1: First runner home for than road runners was Oliver Reagan
- 33:49Speaker 1: in sixth place, but he also won the junior male category,
- 33:54Speaker 1: coming in in thirty nine minutes thirty three seconds. And
- 33:57Speaker 1: it does look a bit of a prospect for the future.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Only a young lads, So we're down to you Oliver

- 34:13Speaker 1: and I heard somebody say called that last bit that
- 34:15Speaker 1: run for home was really tough, and it reminded me
- 34:18Speaker 1: of this song from Linda's Farn.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Love Travel.
- 34:24Speaker 5: With the guitar and behind and the night.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Rob for some.
