- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: I'm feeling like a regional champ, my man.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: How are you feeling today?
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: I'm also feeling like a regional champ.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: We are winners.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech Baseball does not disappoint.
- 1:02SPEAKER_05: So I think that means we need to bring something back, Steven.
- 1:06SPEAKER_05: How about you play the damn song?
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: We're playing the song.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:21SPEAKER_03: What a beautiful time.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: The Texas Tech Red Raiders riding again.
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech Baseball busted out those brooms, and we do what we do best.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: Make that three seasons in a row where we have swept the regional.
- 1:37SPEAKER_05: Tim Tadlock is a stone cold assassin.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Yes, and Kurt Wilson as well.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Kurt Wilson, the MVP of the Lubbock regional, was just insane.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, really, every this whole team was on point, this whole series.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Um, and and I think the most important thing that we saw in regards to this past regional was our bullpen and our pitching.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Came in came in through the clutch for every single game.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Our relievers were great, our starting pitchers were great.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: It was fantastic.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: It was it was something that gives us confidence moving forward.
- 2:11SPEAKER_05: That shows how good Tim Tadlock is at managing his players.
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: Doesn't matter how badly beat up we are.
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: Here we are, regional champs heading into the next phase.
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: Because the bullpen was a concern all season, yet you could not even tell when it mattered.
- 2:25SPEAKER_05: And that's just that's that's insane.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: And it and it's coming down to guys that are taking over.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, there hasn't really been an issue with our starting pitchers.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: You know, Monteverdi, Montgomery, Micah Dallas, Chase Hampton, those type of guys, it hasn't been an issue.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: It's the guys that come in and take over uh to end off the game.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: You know, Ryan Sublett was unbelievable in that North Carolina game.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: And having having that kind of performance where you have eight strikeouts there, you only play two pitchers in that entire game, it really helps the whole entire team moving forward.
- 2:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, people were thinking it was gonna be a liability, but it ended up being an asset.
- 3:00SPEAKER_05: Whenever you hold a team to do it that low of numbers and your batters are as good as ours, there's no question we're gonna get that dub.
- 3:06SPEAKER_05: And I definitely see that formula being repeated as we go forward.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: And we improved each game in terms of the score.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, we started off with Army, the troops.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: We always respect them, but we did God bless them.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: God bless them, but we defeated them, and that's good.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Uh six to three, we ended up beating Army, and then we go play North Carolina, beat them seven to two.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: We finish off with UCLA, finish them off eight to two.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: So we only got better as we kept going.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Uh it was a it was a great round, and these are good teams that we're playing.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: These aren't bad teams by any means.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: So for us to take care of business and win pretty handedly, especially against UCLA, and they were coming off a uh, you know, they were in their doubleheader of the day because they lost initially.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: But um, man, and UNC's a good team too.
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: So uh just just taking care of business on both sides of the ball, defense and offense came out and showed up, and you get it the scoreboard definitely reflects that.
- 4:00SPEAKER_05: And kind of cool that we got to play all three teams, you know, we got to see everybody.
- 4:04SPEAKER_05: So we were tested against three different kinds of teams, and we showed up and pounded through all of them and struggled the most against Army, and that was hardly even struggling, and that's marginal compared to the others.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: So, man, uh everything you could want to start off the postseason because that just gives us a lot of juice, a lot of confidence heading into this next one because we got the nerds from California coming up next.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: And it could be one of two nerds from California.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, we still don't know.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: The game is today.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: We are recording here on Monday.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: So by the time you're listening to this podcast, you will know who we play.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: It will be one of Stanford or UC Irvine uh playing.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: They're both of them coming to Lubbock, or one of them, the winner, is coming to Lubbock.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Uh because we hosted Super Regional because we were a top eight seed.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Uh, I guess we're going for UC Irvine because they were the lower seed.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, Stanford was the nine overall seed.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: We were the eight overall seed.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, hope hopefully UC Irvine maybe pulls it out.
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: Well, well, I mean, if you're if you're cheering for UC Irvine because they're the lower seed, I have a whole another reason.
- 5:07SPEAKER_05: I I'm cheering for them because they're mascot.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: They're the anteaters, bro.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: Obviously, I'm cheering for the ant eaters.
- 5:13SPEAKER_05: That's a dope mascot.
- 5:14SPEAKER_05: That's an awesome mascot.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: That's fantastic.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Get like switch it up a little bit, guys.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Like an eaters, that's great.
- 5:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's wonderful.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: That beats the heck out of Stanford Cardinal.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: All right, a color, come on, man.
- 5:28SPEAKER_05: And that's coming from a team that has color in the mascot, but at least it's something else.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: The bird would be cooler, and they still stuck with the color.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, not good.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Their mascot is a tree.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: They uh I think nothing makes sense.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Nothing makes sense at Stanford, and they're one of the smartest schools in the nation, but uh nothing makes sense in terms of sports for them.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: So um, I you know, we're we like tech baseball, we don't really reach outside of the Big 12 and Texas Tech when it comes to watching college baseball.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: So we're not we couldn't give you a fair uh breakdown of either of these teams.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: So we're going by seeing Stanford looks pretty good.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, they're always putting together a solid baseball team.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, UC Irvine, hopefully they win, I guess.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: You know, who knows?
- 6:16SPEAKER_05: But the those small California schools, though, they they put together some really solid uh baseball programs.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: They they always put plenty of teams into the postseason.
- 6:23SPEAKER_05: Some of them even make it really far.
- 6:24SPEAKER_05: So uh it's probably a tough test for the Cardinals.
- 6:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously it is since they have to play them on Monday.
- 6:29SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'll probably be peeping it.
- 6:30SPEAKER_05: You know, I definitely want to see what Texas Tech's in for.
- 6:33SPEAKER_05: Um, but obviously I have full confidence in the tadlock squad to take on whoever's next.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: But I mean, something interesting with that.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, Stanford was well on their way to sweep their regional as well.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: And then UC Irvine managed to force a game seven uh last night, actually, against Stanford.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: They were down, UC Irvine was down four to two, going in the bottom of the eighth, and then they rallied six straight runs to eventually win eight to four.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: So teams got some firepower, but you know, uh anything's good if they're playing extra games, you know, get them as tired and using as many arms as possible.
- 7:07SPEAKER_05: Which was really important whenever we uh in yesterday in Sunday's games, because I definitely didn't want to do double double header.
- 7:12SPEAKER_05: Obviously, you don't want to be an elimination game at all, but it's such a huge advantage to be able to come into the game fresh.
- 7:16SPEAKER_05: You know, it's the first game of the day rather than your second.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: So that's just really important.
- 7:20SPEAKER_05: And plus, obviously, you know, you want to play less games like you're saying.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: Well, you saw it with UCLA.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, they you could tell they were tired down the stretch there.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, they they just got off a game, had an hour maybe of rest uh after the a tough North Carolina game, which they won pretty handily, but still they went through a few pitchers and everything.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: Their guys just weren't hitting well.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: So uh we took full advantage.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: So good on us for doing that.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 7:44SPEAKER_05: The path to Omaha gets clear and clear by the day.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, obviously, nothing is given, but just knowing our track record and knowing that the confidence in this team, I feel pretty good about us making it to the center of the country.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Let's go to Omaha, Nebraska, baby.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: We should mention six Red Raiders make the Levock regional all-tournament team as expected.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: We won the whole thing.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: So uh all six of ours, Kurt Wilson, most outstanding player.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: He was fantastic.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, timely hits, great fielding, uh, just great overall job by him.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Braxton Fulford also made it, despite uh an iffy final game against UCLA.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, not making a lot of great throws down there at the catcher position, but um, you know, hopefully he gets it together and and you know stops making those errors uh because he's been solid all season, just kind of a kind of a weird game for him.
- 8:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 8:34SPEAKER_05: Maybe it should have been eight to one, but I mean, what are we gonna complain with a score with only allowing two runs?
- 8:38SPEAKER_05: We'll take that any game.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: So yeah, no doubt.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: Definitely well deserved through uh all those awards.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: So yeah, absolutely.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: So continuing on, of course, Chase Young making it on the uh all tournament team, Easton Morel, Cole Stilwell, and Ryan Sublett, who came in for that uh that half a game in the UNC, closed them off, eight strikeouts for that.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: He was fantastic.
- 9:02SPEAKER_05: That guy was throwing like major league numbers, that was insane, dude.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: If he's playing like that and then you open up with Monte Verdi, having that back to back is is insane.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: It's dangerous.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's dangerous.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: It makes us a really, really dangerous team.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: So uh we mentioned the pitchers, uh, Fulford, we mentioned all that.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: So uh, man, this is just a fun time of the year.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: This really is.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Uh it's it's a really underrated time.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, man.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, I was glued to my TV, and I I usually am around this time of year, but this weekend, Saturday, Sunday, we were chilling at the house, and and college baseball was on 90% of the day.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was it was just a good time.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: I've never watched more Texas Tech baseball in my life.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: Thank mostly thank you to uh ESPN plus Big 12 now, honestly.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: Like I've been able to just kick back on a Tuesday night and watch our Red Raiders after work workday.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: So it's it's been a really fun to keep up with them like this, and I'm really excited to see uh you know, basically the March Madness of baseball's here.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: And here we are in deeper in the round.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: So it's a really, really exciting time to be a Texas Tech fan.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: And speaking of that, because that's not a very popular opinion about your ESPN plus uh statement right there.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: So let's move on before we get to what we originally thought was going to be our second segment.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Let's just move on to football scheduling because we didn't talk about this in the previous few episodes after it came out.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: But tech got a pretty good run of their first three games in terms of scheduling.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, all games are going to be at 6 p.m.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: kickoff times.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: So night games for Houston, for Stephen F.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Austin, and for Florida International.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: So big time stuff for us.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: It makes it it's always better when your game is coming on at 6 p.m.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: rather than 11 a.m.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I I mean the thing here is first game against Houston, gonna be on flagship ESPN.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be a big time game, prime time, everything you'd want.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: No complaints about the Houston game.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: Some people were very upset when they found out that both the FIU and Stephen F.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Austin games were gonna be on ESPN Plus on Big 12 now.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, Tristan, you had something to say about ESPN Plus.
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I'm not trying to chill for ESPN here.
- 11:04SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm I'm not I'm not ESPN's biggest fan, but when it comes to like Texas Tech Sports, I've never been able to watch more tech sports ever.
- 11:11SPEAKER_05: The Big 12 now has been kind of awesome.
- 11:14SPEAKER_05: You know, I can watch all these more, you know, not big ticket item sports that isn't football, um, uh pretty easily.
- 11:21SPEAKER_05: You know, all I gotta do is just click on our game in the app, and boom, there it is.
- 11:25SPEAKER_05: For five bucks a month, I would I'd take that any day to be able to watch as much Texas Tech Sports as I want.
- 11:30SPEAKER_05: Um, I I don't really understand why you can't okay, all right.
- 11:35SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry, I'm gonna restart the sentence.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: You're gonna complain about all these 11 a.m.
- 11:41SPEAKER_05: kickoffs on these wacko channels like FS3 or like Southwest number two, blah blah blah, at bright and early in the dawn in the morning, and then we have the chance to play at 6 p.m.
- 11:55SPEAKER_05: for all three out of conference games, but you're mad because it's on a streaming service instead.
- 12:03SPEAKER_05: I don't understand the logic of being mad about that.
- 12:06SPEAKER_05: If I was if I if if this was me, you know, I obviously I wasn't happy about the 11 a.m.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: to begin with, but like if I had the chance to take 6 p.m.
- 12:14SPEAKER_05: but instead I had to pay five bucks anyway to to watch it, I would take that.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's five, it's five bucks for a month for all three of these games.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: So my whole thing is the people that have issues with this, and there's a lot of them, it's usually your Wi-Fi.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: It really is.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: That's usually what is what is wrong with it.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: It's not the app itself.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: My app has never given me very issues.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's buffered a couple times, as with every streaming service that is streaming a live event.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: It's gonna it's gonna buffer.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, I have pretty good Wi-Fi, so I'm happy with everything that ESPN Plus has brought to me.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Plus, like what you mentioned, they show everything.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: I've seen track and field events, I've seen golf events, I've seen women's basketball, softball, all sorts of stuff on the ESPN Plus app.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: And it's just been great, it's been good because I've never been able to watch these before because they're they weren't televised before this.
- 13:08SPEAKER_05: A lot of people were complaining that you they had to pay for another subscription service.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: Look, I get it, but out of all the subs subscription services, you're paying 50 bucks for a year.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: That's really not that bad.
- 13:18SPEAKER_05: I under I mean, I'm not saying I'm not I don't know your financial situation, but if you if you can't muster five bucks a month to watch all your tech sports, I'm sure you got, you know, maybe you know, there's there's a little more going on there.
- 13:32SPEAKER_05: But like like you're saying, you can watch so much tech things on this thing.
- 13:36SPEAKER_05: I don't have a huge issue with it.
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: And I don't think people realize how much the atmosphere suffers at games when it's at 11 a.m.
- 13:44SPEAKER_05: You know, I would much rather the Jones be rocking at 6 p.m., even if I have to stream it.
- 13:48SPEAKER_05: I want everyone there to have a great time.
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: I want to be able to kick back on a Saturday evening and watch it instead.
- 13:53SPEAKER_05: And another thing is every red raider can watch it, it doesn't have to be on a regional channel like it normally would be.
- 13:59SPEAKER_05: So a red raider in Maine or Oregon can turn it on on the app and watch the game at 6 p.m.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: So I I'm way I'm ecstatic about it.
- 14:09SPEAKER_05: I think it's awesome.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: But also, we should uh we should re we should re-go into we got uh the 6 p.m.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: kickoff primetime ESPN with Houston, our first game of the year.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: That's big time, man.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Like uh I I know Houston's a solid out of conference opponent, but first week of the season, there's gonna be some good games, and we got the 6 p.m.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: time slot on Saturday.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: I mean that's ESPN.
- 14:32SPEAKER_05: That's huge, dude.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: That's crazy, and uh so a lot of TVs will be tuned into Texas Tech versus Houston because everyone's gonna want as much college football as they can get, and that's a fun matchup.
- 14:42SPEAKER_05: You know, it's an in-state rivalry, and it's definitely one that we can lose.
- 14:46SPEAKER_05: So it's an intrigue, it's not your everyday big P Pie versus G Pie matchup.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: So I know we're gonna be there.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: So I'm glad it's at 6 p.m.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: But yeah, obviously, we're gonna be there.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Uh being in Houston, it's a good midway point for both you and me.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's it's just gonna be a big time game.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: NRG Stadium playing the Houston Cougars.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, I mean, it's gonna be a good time no matter what, man.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, it's it's it's an opportunity to put Texas Tech back on the map immediately, you know, be something to look at in the in the in the 2021 season.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: So, because I expect us to go three and oh, and that's a good place to start.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: And I'll be happy to do it on national TV.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's gonna be prime time.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but we we should say too, we went to the Baylor game this past year, and it was it's kind of fun to say that we went to a game during COVID uh when not a lot of people got to go to games and stuff like that.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: It was definitely weird and neery, and I didn't really enjoy it at you know as much as if it were a packed crowd.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: So getting back to a game, getting back to see Texas Tech football in person, live with a bunch of people, because by that time, you know, arenas are filling back up again.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: So uh it's gonna be really, really fun, and I can't wait to get my ticket.
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 15:52SPEAKER_05: I count on it, man.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: Um, and I uh if anyone's worried that we're gonna be like on ESPN Plus all year, don't be like Steve and I were talking about this earlier.
- 15:59SPEAKER_05: I can't see it being one or two more games after that.
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: You know, that they're gonna want to put big 12 games on regular TV.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they'll usually put one, I think, on ESPN Plus, and usually it's like the Kansas game or something where they know it's not gonna get a lot of views just because it's a lower tier opponent.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: So I, you know, I I understand the complaining, I get it, you know, somewhat, but a lot of the times it's not the app, it's your Wi-Fi.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: And I know that's a tough deal to a tough thing to swallow, but uh it just is.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: I I I like the Espn Plus app.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: And Texas Tech hasn't earned its place to be broadcasted on mainstream TV right now.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: It's yeah, we we would be on the bottom rung if it was on regular cable.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech football has a lot to prove, and this is the season to do it.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: And you know, as the team gets better, the ratings will get more primetime spots, we'll stop getting off ESPN Plus.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: It'll happen.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: So we gotta we gotta improve the program first.
- 16:57SPEAKER_05: So absolutely.
- 16:58SPEAKER_05: All right, that's enough boring TV schedule talk.
- 17:00SPEAKER_05: Let's let's move on.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: Enough of that.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: We're moving on to an article that you gave to me.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: You sent it to uh kind of our group today.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, it was interesting because it was national media, it was from the athletic, uh, written by uh David Ubin, I'm gonna say Ubin Ubin, I think it's Ubin.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: Um article written by him from The Athletic, basically saying Arkansas should go back to the Big 12.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: And this was really interesting because the Big 12 does not get a ton of national media love these days.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: But for basically somebody, uh a big time writer to go out and say an SEC team should move to the Big 12, that's that's crazy stuff, man.
- 17:45SPEAKER_05: Talk about a unicorn headline, man.
- 17:47SPEAKER_05: It's it's it's a bit of a castle in the sky scenario.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: Um, every appeal he was making it made sense, it was an emotional appeal to the fans because he he pretty much laid it out to where in a fan's position, Arkansas being the Big 12 is better in basically every single way.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: But the one thing that fans can't benefit from keeps it in the SEC, and that's the money.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, and uh it's not even that big of a money dis uh disparity.
- 18:15SPEAKER_05: You know, the SEC makes 45 and a half uh million per school and the Big 12 makes 37.7 per school.
- 18:21SPEAKER_05: So that's that's that's some that's fairly marginal.
- 18:23SPEAKER_05: I know we're talking about millions, but I mean that's not a huge gap.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: But obviously, that's still more money and in in this in college football today, that's all that matters.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: But man, when you're talking to every individual fan, this is the same discussion that a lot of people have.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: It comes up every offseason for sure.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: It's really rivalries and tradition versus money.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, how do you approach this?
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Is a team going to leave making eight to nine more million per year in this conference, but continue to lose versus having a bunch of a great atmosphere, a chance to actually compete.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: And and that's not really a knock on the Big 12.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: That's just a knock on the SEC having a team like Alabama in their conference.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, you know, we have Oklahoma, and Oklahoma's been a powerhouse, but it hasn't been what Alabama is, it hasn't been what Clemson is, you know, making national championships, that kind of stuff.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: It it gives them an opportunity and it gives them a cultural aspect that they don't necessarily have in the SEC versus the Big 12.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: Arkansas shares the same problem that a lot of teams that have been involved in recent alignment have.
- 19:34SPEAKER_05: They hate a team that's not in the conference the most.
- 19:38SPEAKER_05: They don't like Texas at all.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: Obviously, a lot of the young young bucks aren't really going to know about the UT Arkansas rivalry, but that was a big one.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: That was basically like almost like UT versus OU back in the Southwest.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: They were the two big dogs at the time.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: Um, and since Arkansas left, they completely lost that status as a Kingpin.
- 19:56SPEAKER_05: Um, they are actually bottom status in the SEC.
- 19:58SPEAKER_05: And I'm not not knocking on Arkansas, but they have a hard time competing in football in in the SEC, but they're competing in the SEC West.
- 20:06SPEAKER_05: That's a that is a dredge.
- 20:08SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, you have to you have to deal with Alabama, Auburn, LSU every year.
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: Um, so that it's a tough going.
- 20:17SPEAKER_05: And the biggest thing is from a fan experience, is that yeah, you're gonna be able to come into the Big 12 and have a more winnable looking schedule on your hands because you're not in the SEC West anymore.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: Um and you'll be able to drive to a whole lot of schools a lot closer, like our Oklahoma State's like three or four hours away.
- 20:37SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma's not that much further.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the Kansas schools which are three or four hours away as well, and there's a whole lot of alumni in the DFW area, and that's a big, big 12 town.
- 20:45SPEAKER_05: So I I totally get it.
- 20:47SPEAKER_05: It's not gonna happen because of money.
- 20:48SPEAKER_05: But you know, if I'm a fan of an Arkansas team, unless I'm just being an arrogant, being like, no, we deserve to be in the SEC just because we want that prestige, um, whatever.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: But it's just I totally get it.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: It's a fun article because it kind of Arkansas's a lot of Nebraska and Colorado and Missoula and AM, like all their tradition history is elsewhere, but all they wanted to do was chase that money.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and really you think about it, all the schools that left the Big 12, maybe minus AM, uh, have only gone downhill.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, AM's benefited from it in terms of recruiting and all that all that sort of stuff.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: But Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, all these teams are just kind of eh in their other conferences, and they don't have these traditions and these rivalries that they had for so many years with all these Big 12 schools, and that's kind of hurt from a fan's perspective.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, you can try to fool yourself all you want.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, we play Alabama every year, you know.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: I you also lose to Alabama every year.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: I, you know, I don't know, I don't know what you want.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Wouldn't you have more fun playing Texas, playing Texas Tech, playing your in state rivals, the people that you grew up with that go to other schools and all this kind of stuff?
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: It's just it it blows.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: My mind a little bit when you just kind of ride that whole oh SEC, you know, we're the we're the top dogs, and like, okay, but we really don't care because uh all all that matters is the university's making money.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: How's your fan experience?
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: You know, right?
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: Is it that much more fun, really?
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: Playing losing to Alabama every year versus playing a team that has been a rival since for a hundred years?
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Like, come on.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: Look, I'm not doubting that money is not important to the progression of an athletic department, but as a fan, you're not seeing a dime of it.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: And if the Big 12, if OU can go to the playoff every year, you know, on that Big 12 dime, what's what's or the Clemson on ACC's dime, which is even worse.
- 22:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like you can't just assume that you know, the more money just means you're gonna be better because that's not the case.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: Texas, it's awful Texas Tech team walked into pay of bill and beat you, led the whole time.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: Great memory.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: Great memory.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: But but it's just again, it comes back to like you said, it's just as a fan, what do you want?
- 23:00SPEAKER_05: You know, what would you rather?
- 23:01SPEAKER_05: Would you rather be with your history short drive away and have a more winnable schedule on your hands, or you just want that arrogant, you know, I s even if we were the worst ones every year, at least we're part of the best kind of thing.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: Well, they can always ride Alabama like they do, yeah.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: So I don't know.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: I don't know, especially.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, every Nebraska's terrible now.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they were living in they were great when they were in the Big 12, and then they go and leave, and it's just it's the same thing over and over again.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: I'm sure we'll talk about it more as the offseason goes, but that was kind of an interesting article.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Thought we'd bring it up, uh, because it's somebody leaving the SEC for the Big 12.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: It's kind of a different take from the national media.
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: It is, man.
- 23:43SPEAKER_05: And uh, I would be I would open arms to it.
- 23:45SPEAKER_05: I think it'd be really natural too.
- 23:47SPEAKER_05: So I it it'd be really cool if that if if something like that happened, but it's probably not gonna happen.
- 23:52SPEAKER_05: Um, just uh obviously quick alignment talk drink.
- 23:55SPEAKER_05: I think if the Big 12's expanding, it's going to the pack, but like I like like stealing from the pack, but do it.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: We won't get into that though, uh, because we've already started that and we will continue that in other episodes, but we have to move on to disappointing news.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Um Avery Benson uh committing to the University of Texas to the Longhorns.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Um, it's not surprising because he's followed Beard everywhere he's gone.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: Um it was more disappointing than anything, uh, just from a tech fan's perspective, because he's going to that that dude that left us uh to the school that we hate.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, it again, Avery Benson.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: We we we always stand up for the guy.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: He's a good dude.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: He represented tech well when he was here.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Um and and he's just to be honest, he's he's a bench guy.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: He's a guy, he's a culture guy.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: You uh you know, we when he was on our team, we say he's a culture guy.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: When he's on UT's team, we're gonna say he's a bench guy.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: He's not gonna play a lot.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: He's he's not he's just not with that, especially with that UT team with Texas Tech, he didn't play a lot.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: It's just and it it stinks that he's going to the dark side, really.
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I just wanted to ask you from a logical standpoint, like try to rationalize his decision.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: All right, so all right, pro one, he followed his coach to uh another school, but after that, please lay out why this was a good move for Avery Benson.
- 25:27SPEAKER_05: I can't like you can't that's what I mean.
- 25:30SPEAKER_05: That's exactly that's like what I'm asking.
- 25:32SPEAKER_05: Like, can you rationalize any other reason why he's there?
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: Well, I I you gotta think that maybe Beard has a coaching spot for him after he's done playing.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Um, him and he's he's fine, he was gonna go to Little Rock when Beard was still there and he decided to move on to Texas Tech.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Then he followed him to Texas Tech, and now he's following him to UT.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: He's obviously Beard's guy, he likes Coach Beard.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: I I imagine it's something that maybe he's kind of a wink wink kind of nudge nudge.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: You're gonna be maybe potentially on your path to be part of my staff in the future.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, whether it's a grad assistant, guys have to go through a lot of stuff before they can be on the actual staff itself.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: But I, you know, I a player, we've said this a few times, a player-coach relationship is unmatchable on a lot of things.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: No matter if we think Beard's a piece of shit or not, you know, he has a relationship with these guys, and you'll see it with even Terrence Shannon and guys that he just coached that still say good stuff about him.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna say good stuff about him because he's a trash individual, but for them to have a relationship with their coach, it you know, whatever, man.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: I but back to your point, it it doesn't in terms of playing, it doesn't help.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: He's not gonna play at UT, he wasn't gonna play a tech.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: It's just it's just a weird kind of move, and I think it's gotta it's gotta have something for maybe a coaching future, whatever.
- 26:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I asked because it's it seemed like it would make way more sense if you went to like a mid-major or a G5 school or a P5 that needs a a veteran guard.
- 27:07SPEAKER_05: I this one just didn't make any sense from a playing standpoint.
- 27:10SPEAKER_05: Um, but obviously, if you lay it out as a coaching thing, I mean that's that's that's something else, I guess.
- 27:15SPEAKER_05: If you want to look after your your career, but he I love the guy, we all love the guy.
- 27:20SPEAKER_05: He was like a Texas Tech mascot.
- 27:22SPEAKER_05: He just we thought he represented us phenomenally with in with all of his get up and everything.
- 27:26SPEAKER_05: The guy screamed West Texas with that 10-gallon hat and his his boot boots and jeans.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: That's shirt ain't Austin.
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: But man, I I this kind of tarnishes his legacy a bit, but I don't think it'll be a whole lot of hate.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: No, it and I'm not gonna like you know, if Avery Benson comes in, whatever, uh during the Texas Tech game, uh I would boo him because he's playing against my team and he plays for he's wearing the burn orange, but you know, it's it's not like it's not like Coach Beard.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: Like Coach Beard, it's a it's a hate.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Avery Benson, it's not a hate, it's just a disappointment, a little bit, you know.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: But also in terms of the team, in terms of what Texas Tech is losing with Avery Benson, it's not much.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: If anything, you're losing a little bit of culture and a little uh a great guy in the locker room to have, but it seems like this group is tight.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: It seems like Mark Adams has brought in a good staff, it seems like he's brought in the right guys to come in and compete and just be good to one another.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, losing a culture guy, not that big a deal.
- 28:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it kind of sings because it seemed like Avery Benson was in it, like he was there for tech to finish out his career and for him to like be committed and then pull out like he did.
- 28:34SPEAKER_05: Not very cool.
- 28:35SPEAKER_05: But so does this open up more opportunities for Texas Tech?
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Well, and I don't think Avery Benson was gonna get a scholarship at Texas Tech.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: I think that was really that might have been a decision of what it came down to.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: Texas might give him one because they had one left over.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, I I don't think he was in line, especially if we're gonna add a few more players, which it looks like we could.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: We're still looking at a few guys that are in the transfer portal right now.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: So um, and we have a lot of guards.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: We mentioned this last time, uh in the episode where we announced that he was gonna transfer.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: We have a lot of good guards on this team.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: He wasn't gonna get a lot of playing time, it just wasn't gonna happen, and it's really not gonna happen at UT either.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: I think it's I think it's more to get another guy that that's been in beard circle over there.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: Hey, it's sync set though.
- 29:23SPEAKER_05: I thought we were gonna go completely undefeated with none of the players going to UT.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but if anything, I'm of all the players that were transferring out.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: If Avery Benson's going to UT, I can live with that.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: I I wouldn't have lived with Mac or Kyler going to UT.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: No, I wouldn't have been okay with that.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Avery Benson, sure, whatever, man.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: Like, I yeah, I'm not gonna root for you at UT.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: You're a good you're a good dude.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: You represent him as well, but uh, you know, leaving for UT.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna, I'm gonna have ill will towards you.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: A little, just a little bit.
- 29:55SPEAKER_05: So Micah Peavy and Avery Benson were the only ones that are like, oh, you know, yeah, Micah Peavy too, going to TCU.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: I know his girlfriend's over there, so I think that had something to do with it.
- 30:07SPEAKER_05: Women are temporary, ball is forever, ball is forever.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: Ball is life, Micah.
- 30:12SPEAKER_05: Come on, gotta hope that's all hear that.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: They don't listen to this podcast anyway.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: What are you talking about?
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: All right, let's move on to the meat of this episode.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, we did the top five most hated sports figures in the city of Lubbock and at Texas Tech.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: So now we're gonna be more positive.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: We're gonna give you the top five most beloved Texas Tech sports personalities.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Obviously, everybody's gonna have a different list.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: We again we're gonna give a disclaimer.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: We're young.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: We are 24 and 25 years old right now.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: We're we have not been born and raised in Lubbock, Texas since the 70s.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry if we forget the older guys.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: We're sorry, but we are gonna do what we know and what we know best.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, Tristan, we have our top five most beloved sports figures.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: I give we're gonna have a ton of honorable mentions, by the way.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: We're gonna mention those after this.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: Number five, we're gonna go five to one.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what is your number five most beloved tech figure?
- 31:16SPEAKER_05: Man, trimming the fat on this was really tough.
- 31:20SPEAKER_05: Ordering this was really tough, but I think I'm I'm doing all right with my number five here.
- 31:25SPEAKER_05: Number five, I put the hall of fame woman's basketball coach in Marsha Sharp.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: The first woman to win a team national championship here at Texas Tech.
- 31:36SPEAKER_05: We even named a highway after her.
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: So she uh she is a celebrity, she represents Texas Tech with the utmost class, she's in the hall of fame.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, come on, and she did what was seemingly impossible at Texas Tech and just brought our Lady Raiders to victory that we hope to see under Miss Gurlich, who played for Miss Marsha Sharp.
- 31:56SPEAKER_05: So she's carrying on that legacy.
- 31:57SPEAKER_05: So number five for me, Marsha Sharp.
- 31:59SPEAKER_05: She just left her imprint on Lubbock.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Marsha Sharp is higher on my list.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: Ah, dude.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm going my number five.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: We'll we'll just go down like normal because we're probably gonna repeat here.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: But my number five is Spike Dykes.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Uh the Lubbock guy, the Texas Tech guy, won multiple conference championships for Texas Tech.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, he's beloved, man.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: The Dykes family is beloved.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Just everything about it, man.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: I I had to go a little old school to appease the masses here with my number five.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we were not there during the Spike Dykes era, but he is such an iconic coach for Texas Tech football and represented the university with the best, just the best.
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: He's he's awesome, man.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: Great pick because he's higher on my list.
- 32:45SPEAKER_05: So I'll have to wait to get my take there in a bit.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay, right on.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: So that's that's what I have to say.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: Spike Dykes, I had to put him in my top five.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: It would have felt criminal to keep him off.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: So, number four, Tristan.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: What is your number four?
- 33:00SPEAKER_05: Number four, I'm I might make people a little mad with how low he is on the list, but with such a controversial career at Texas Tech, he had to he couldn't be at the very top.
- 33:10SPEAKER_05: I'm going with the prairie pirate himself, Mike Leach.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: He just gave us such beloved memories here at Texas Tech.
- 33:17SPEAKER_05: He uh he really put Texas Tech football on the map in the Big 12 era, and he did some incredible things.
- 33:23SPEAKER_05: He won a Big 12 South Division, made some he probably has the most legendary game in history at Texas Tech under his belt, and just put together some of the greatest players, some of the greatest tandems, and really stuck it to the Aggies and the Baylor Bears and really punched the UT in the nose a few times too.
- 33:39SPEAKER_05: And he can't and the Sooners.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: So the guy left a legacy that was cut way too short.
- 33:44SPEAKER_05: So I had to put him on here.
- 33:46SPEAKER_05: Um, so I'm going with the Prairie Pirate, Mike Leach.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: This is like a weird alternate reality that I'm living in because you're you're not you're not a leech hater.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: You just put him on your top five of most beloved Texas tech lists, but you do want to emphasize multiple times that Mike Leach is no longer here.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: You don't believe in the curse of the pirate, uh, everything like that.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: Mike Leach is not in my top five.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Wow, Mike Leach is not in my top five.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: I thought about it hard, and it's tough again, it's tough leaving guys off of this list.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: Also, my number four may shock you.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Uh here we go, buzzfeed.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: My number four may shock you.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: My number four is Patrick Mahomes.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: What yes, are you kidding me?
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Number four?
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: Number four is Patrick Mahomes, and it hurt.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Wow, it hurt a lot.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: I based it basically just off of his Texas Tech career, uh, because he didn't win a lot, and that's not a fault of his.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: It's not at all, at all, but it tarnishes his legacy a little bit, and that's unfortunate.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: That's what happens when your team does not win.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: It happens in professional sports, it happens when judging any athlete that's playing at any level.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: If you don't win, you're not as thought of as highly.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: I love Patrick Mahomes.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: I love everything that this man has brought to the university, how he's represented it post-Texas Tech has been great.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: When he's been at Texas Tech, he didn't win.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: And that's why he's so low on my top five.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Um, I hope he build the statue of him one day.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: I really do.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: He's uh and I in terms of just him as a person, he's a fantastic dude.
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: He he represents himself in a great way.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: He gives to charity, he's always helping out the community.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: He's he's welcomed Kansas City as as his own, really.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Um, and he welcomed Lubbock, Texas as his own.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: And and all it still represents Texas Tech, still tweets about us when we're playing big games, and that's so huge coming from an NFL MVP and probably one of the most famous athletes in the world right now.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: So uh, but uh really the only reason he's so low is because of his his record at Texas Tech, and it's not great, and that's why I had to put a few guys higher.
- 35:54SPEAKER_05: That's fair.
- 35:54SPEAKER_05: That's that's that's a really fair take to say that we didn't capitalize on him, so you can't put him any higher.
- 36:00SPEAKER_05: So, but I don't think it was his fault at all that we uh dropped those games.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: So it was not if anybody, he's the leash to blame, but but he's higher on my list, so I'll I'll stop there.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: Okay, go ahead with your number three.
- 36:13SPEAKER_05: Number three.
- 36:15SPEAKER_05: I have a idea.
- 36:17SPEAKER_05: The old boy in the dugout.
- 36:21SPEAKER_05: You just I'm gonna I'm gonna put in Maka Dallas.
- 36:23SPEAKER_05: You he's just throwing the ball pretty good.
- 36:27SPEAKER_05: I'm going with Tim Tablock.
- 36:28SPEAKER_05: Um, what he's done at Texas Tech is truly incredible.
- 36:31SPEAKER_05: Like he's he's he's taken a a decent baseball program and turned it into a powerhouse in a blink of an eye.
- 36:38SPEAKER_05: We we we are expected in Omaha every single year, and it took less than 10 years for him to do that.
- 36:45SPEAKER_05: It's I don't think people appreciate what he's done enough, especially on the national level.
- 36:50SPEAKER_05: But the the guy, he's a red raider alum, you know, he had a great career as a player, and now he's back in his alma mater, and he's not turning his back on it.
- 36:58SPEAKER_05: And he just accepted a lifetime contract, as humble as ever, stays out of the spotlight, and just represents the university the best you could ever want.
- 37:06SPEAKER_05: And then he's an even better coach on top of it.
- 37:09SPEAKER_05: So it's gotta be Tim Tadlock.
- 37:11SPEAKER_05: He's gotta be in this list.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: My number three, it's also the guy in the dugout, you know, man of few words, not gonna say much, and I'm just glad that Jace is hitting the ball well.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: And, you know, we're just I I put out Chase Hampton because he's hitting the ball or he's throwing the ball well, you know.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: What more can he say about Tim Tadlock?
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: He's my number three as well.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, he really is.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: He's he's he's the guy that Chris Beard wishes he was, uh, because he he embraced the university and he's staying at the university because he knows how special this place is.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: And he's he's born and raised, he's a Texas Tech guy, he played here, you know.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: He really is everything that you want in a Texas Tech coach.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: And you could talk about that at any university that's not as it's it's not a blue blood, you know what I'm saying?
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: And these kind of things.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: So uh having a guy, West Texas guy, represent your baseball team and take them to the heights that they've never been before and competing for national championships every year.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, five straight years we're hosting a regional, three straight years we've swept the first regional.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's just insane what this guy has brought to the program.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: And he is, he's he's silent, he's a man of few words, but he is the best coach that we have currently.
- 38:32SPEAKER_05: He he's molding us into a powerhouse.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: By the end of his career, I have the full confidence in saying he's the greatest coach that Texas Tech has ever had in any sport.
- 38:40SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 38:43SPEAKER_05: And whenever he retires in 30, 40 years, it's we're gonna be just an ivory tower that's gonna have huge shoes to fill.
- 38:50SPEAKER_05: So God bless him.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: And I'm so glad we'll be able to watch his entire career at Texas Tech.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: There you have it.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: Number two, go ahead.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: Thanks, Skipper.
- 38:58SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 39:00SPEAKER_05: Number two, I'm following you up.
- 39:02SPEAKER_05: Um, this this is gonna eventually be Tim Tadlock's place, but it's right now it's Spike Dykes.
- 39:08SPEAKER_05: I'm putting Spike at number two because Spike really turned Texas Tech football into a name, into a household name.
- 39:17SPEAKER_05: I'm I know I know we're not blue blood, but he took Texas Tech and made it into a Southwest contender.
- 39:23SPEAKER_05: We won conference titles under him, and he's probably a huge reason why we're in the Big 12.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: Like, if had he not put strung together so many successful seasons at Texas Tech and not done what he did, brought in these great players under him as well.
- 39:38SPEAKER_05: Who knows what Texas Tech would be doing right now?
- 39:40SPEAKER_05: Would we be in the American?
- 39:42SPEAKER_05: I don't know, hopefully not.
- 39:43SPEAKER_05: But I'm so glad we had him when we did because I think he's a huge part of why we're in the power five picture.
- 39:49SPEAKER_05: And I'm very thankful for that.
- 39:52SPEAKER_05: And the guy's just left a lasting legacy, and I hope we can retain it one day, you know, grab it again, be that football program that deserves it again.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: That's absolutely what I think.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: And and I'm gonna compare this because I'm a Spurs fan.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna Spike Dykes is a lot like David Robinson, and uh, you know, when in terms of talking about your favorite Spurs players, Tim Duncan's number one.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: That's always every Spurs fan's number one is Tim Duncan, but David Robinson started that, and even you could go back even further.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: George Gervin started it, kept the team in San Antonio.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: Spike Dykes making Texas Tech a household name in a power conference.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: That's what he does.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: So that's a great pick.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know I had to include him in my top five, um, but I was not there for those years, so it was tough for me.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: It was tough for me to put him in number two, but I'm glad you did.
- 40:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, like I said, 10 tadlock, he's gonna be up there eventually, but uh I just had to give give props to the legacy of it because I really, really do think he's a huge part of what Texas Tech is today.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: I'm uh I'm surprised because uh and number two, my number two is Marsha Sharp.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: I had to include her.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: She is uh an un she has a highway named after her in Lubbock, Texas.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: She brought a national championship to the city of Lubbock and to Texas Tech.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, everything that you would want, everything you want from a coach.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: And uh she's number two because she has the legacy, she really does.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, no, uh, not a lot of other coaches can say they brought a national championship to Texas Tech.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: So uh she has to be that high on the list.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: She really does for me.
- 41:23SPEAKER_05: Only one other guy on the honorable mention can say that.
- 41:25SPEAKER_05: So yep, yep.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Only one other guy.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: I'm surprised because you you don't have my number one.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: My number one is not in your top five because I know who your number one is gonna be.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: What who the heck is your number one then?
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: Who is your number one?
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: You go.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Who's your number?
- 41:42SPEAKER_05: My number one is the future GOAT of the NFL.
- 41:45SPEAKER_05: And it's I'm insane recency bias.
- 41:48SPEAKER_05: For me, it's Patrick Mahomes because this is this is this was my reasoning behind it.
- 41:53SPEAKER_05: He's the one guy that literally every Texas Tech fan I think would put in their top five.
- 41:58SPEAKER_05: He is completely unoffensive to put on this list, and the guy is a superstar.
- 42:04SPEAKER_05: I don't think we've ever had an athlete that is the star power that he is.
- 42:08SPEAKER_05: This guy's the most popular player in the most popular league in America, and I think that says something.
- 42:14SPEAKER_05: The guy and the guy is a great dude on top of it and represents Texas Tech well and always gives shouts out back to his alma maters, always rooting for us, wants us, wants us to win every single week.
- 42:24SPEAKER_05: And I just gotta put our guy.
- 42:26SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm maybe because it's it was my college career that he was our quarterback, and that was always our quarterback, no matter how bad the team was.
- 42:32SPEAKER_05: It's like, well, at least we have Patrick Mahomes, so there's a chance.
- 42:35SPEAKER_05: That's how it always was every Saturday for us.
- 42:37SPEAKER_05: And that's just maybe that's an insanely biased pick, but the guy's I I think the guy's officially gonna be the greatest quarterback of all time, and he's a damn red raider.
- 42:47SPEAKER_05: So hell yeah, it's Patrick Mahomes.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Listen, it's not a bad pick.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: Screw you, Steven.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: It's not a bad pick.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, I have him in my top five.
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: He is my number four.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, we've already gone through it, it's because of his Texas Tech thing for me.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Um, my number one is Zach Smith.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: No, I'm just kidding.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: Love Zach Smith.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: Love Zach Smith, but he's not he's not on the list.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: My number one is Michael Crabtree.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: Michael Crabtree is is Texas Tech.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: It's what do people think when they think of Texas Tech football?
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: They think of the catch, they think of Michael Crabtree making the catch against number one Texas in what is if it's not your favorite, it's a top five all-time college football game.
- 43:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, it really and and he was the guy.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: He uh both of his seasons in Lubbock were unbelievably insane.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: Bolitnikov winner in two times, two times.
- 43:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, just uh the talent level that he brought to Texas Tech in his career at Texas Tech was unmatched.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: He's a ring of honor member, he is just everything that you want, everything that represents the university.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then he had a Solid pro career after that.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's not he hasn't been Patrick Mahomes in the pros, but he was better than Patrick Mahomes at his time at Texas Tech.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: And that's why I have to put him at my number one because that's who people think.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Obviously, people think of Patrick Mahomes, but when you talk about Texas Tech football, anybody over the age of probably 20 is gonna say Michael Crabtree.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: They know where they were when that game happened.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: And especially if you're a Texas Tech fan, you know he's in every local restaurant in Lubbock, Texas.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: Everybody's got a picture of Michael Crabtree making that catch.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: He's number one for me.
- 44:32SPEAKER_05: That you the way you laid that out, and just you just really sparked that conversation in my mind.
- 44:38SPEAKER_05: I think you might be right.
- 44:39SPEAKER_05: The guy is probably the single most famous entity to ever pass through Texas Tech Football.
- 44:45SPEAKER_05: The the catch, everyone knows the catch, and he's one of the greatest college football players of all time, easily.
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: So that's that's a great pick, man.
- 44:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, the guy was on a college football video game cover.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: Literally, you can't go wrong with any of our picks here.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: No, you can't everybody, everybody's gonna have a different list, everybody's gonna be upset at where can where people are ranked, you know.
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, I these are our personal lists, and you are free.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Tweet us, tweet at us, and tell us your personal list, you know, of of your favorite Texas Tech athletes, the most beloved from the university, from the community, from everybody.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, let's run through some honorable mentions because there's a ton of them.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: There are, man.
- 45:23SPEAKER_05: I'm sure we have a number of ones to mention too.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: So it very much hurt, especially for four people uh that I had to leave off this list.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: Um, uh the four people that I left off uh that that really were in contention for this top five.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: There's personal love that I have for a lot of people that I'm gonna mention later.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but uh these four specifically Jarek Culver, Cheryl Swoops, Graham Harrell, and Zach Thomas.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: Those four for me, I mean, it hurt.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: It really hurt me not to put them in the top five.
- 45:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you knocked on some of mine as well.
- 45:54SPEAKER_05: But I'm gonna throw out for career, like the Culver brothers in general, both of them.
- 45:58SPEAKER_05: Uh the young brothers, both of them.
- 46:01SPEAKER_05: Um, Wes Welker, one of the most legendary slot receivers in the NFL ever.
- 46:06SPEAKER_05: Um, Darwin Hamm, you know, Andre Emmett.
- 46:10SPEAKER_05: It's a great list here, and and Wes Kidley, you know.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: Dude, we could go down.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: I got I had Mike Leach, I had Mike Leach in my honorable mention.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: I had Jakeem Grant, Dakota Allen.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, we have to mention the other guys that are in the ring of honor, the old guys, Donnie Anderson, Dave Park, CJ Holem, uh, and Gabe Rivera.
- 46:28SPEAKER_02: In terms of basketball, literally every player on that 2019 team.
- 46:32SPEAKER_05: Every single one.
- 46:34SPEAKER_02: Minus Avery Benson now.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: Minus Avery.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: Why'd you do that to us?
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: Tariq Owens, Matt Mooney, Norrence Odiase, those type of guys.
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: I have to throw in Keenan Evans as well, Justin Gray, Toddra Gotcher, those guys that didn't quite make it to the top of the top, but still four-year guys that represented Texas Tech in the best way.
- 46:54SPEAKER_05: And let's put a cherry on top, Mark Adams.
- 46:57SPEAKER_02: I I wrote it down.
- 46:58SPEAKER_02: I wrote it down.
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: Mark Adams is there.
- 47:01SPEAKER_02: He's there, and he's gonna be possibly higher on this list by the end of his Texas Tech career.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: But he's another guy, he's like Tim Tadlock.
- 47:08SPEAKER_05: He stayed.
- 47:10SPEAKER_05: He's Texas Tech through and through.
- 47:12SPEAKER_05: And that's that's all we ask for in Lubbock, man.
- 47:14SPEAKER_05: And I like that.
- 47:14SPEAKER_05: That's and that's why we don't hate Cliff Kingsbury, you know.
- 47:17SPEAKER_02: No, like it's just I I yeah, I I didn't I didn't write down Cliff because of you know, it's just a Rocky situation.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, Cliff is awesome.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: He still is.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: We're we still root for him.
- 47:28SPEAKER_05: Fully, yeah.
- 47:28SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: I want Arizona to win every game.
- 47:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 47:31SPEAKER_02: Root for root for Arizona, man.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: Go go Cliff.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: Hope he does well.
- 47:35SPEAKER_02: Don't wish him any ill will.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, baseball, I mentioned a few.
- 47:38SPEAKER_02: Eric Gutierrez, Steven Smith, Hunter Hargrove, Tyler Neslone, Davis Martin, Caleb Killian, and then of course Josh Young, soon to be Jace Young.
- 47:48SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, we just love everybody that comes through Texas Tech.
- 47:52SPEAKER_02: It's tough to leave people off these lists.
- 47:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, we could we could mention everybody because we really do.
- 47:58SPEAKER_02: We embrace everybody.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, maybe minus a few football players that I will not mention.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, because this is this is positivity.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: This is a positivity podcast right here.
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: Well, dude, this episode has been so much fun.
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: I don't want it to end, but looks like we're here in the home stretch.
- 48:14SPEAKER_05: Y'all gotta let us know.
- 48:15SPEAKER_05: Like, please let us know what your top five are.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: Do we do okay?
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: Um, and just just let it, especially y'all older folks, you know.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we're we're coming from 25-year-old mindset here.
- 48:26SPEAKER_05: Um, so y'all, y'all definitely know a little deeper than we do, but obviously, recent C by has got a lot of us.
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: I love I love learning about Texas Tech history.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: I love learning about the guys that maybe we don't know much about, but represented the university, did those little things that you love to see.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: You know, like like 20 years from now, people are gonna be like, Who's Norren's Odiase?
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna be like, Norce was the best, man.
- 48:47SPEAKER_02: Norce did everything you wanted him to do.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: It's always say Matt Mooney.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like he only played a tech for one year.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it was the best year ever.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: Best year of my life.
- 48:58SPEAKER_02: Best year of my life.
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: Um, that kind of ties in.
- 49:01SPEAKER_02: That kind of ties in.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: I have one shout-out before we get to song of the week.
- 49:05SPEAKER_02: Shout out to the goat of Texas Tech, Bill Dean.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: Bill freaking Dean, and everybody that has either gone through the MCOM building or really Texas Tech in general, because he was the leader of the alumni uh association for a while.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, he's the goat, and he's retiring after 54 years with Texas Tech at the ripe age of 83.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: Um, Bill Dean's the best, man.
- 49:32SPEAKER_05: What a king.
- 49:33SPEAKER_05: What a king, man.
- 49:35SPEAKER_05: And he'll and he'll at the baseball games too.
- 49:37SPEAKER_05: Like the guy is still there, still cheering on his Red Raiders.
- 49:40SPEAKER_05: Just talk about service to his community, service to his his alma mater, service to the thing place he loves, and what a life Will lived, man.
- 49:47SPEAKER_05: And I'm glad he gets to live out his twilight days there in Lubbock and just take it easy as an old man now.
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: You know, he's earned it.
- 49:53SPEAKER_05: That's a long time to work.
- 49:55SPEAKER_02: He lived out all of his days in Lubbock.
- 49:57SPEAKER_02: This is this is a man who has never left.
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: He is he's the best.
- 50:02SPEAKER_02: I was I was reading the article that Texas Tech put out about Bill Dean, um, you know, for his retirement and everything.
- 50:08SPEAKER_02: When Bill Dean was born, 34th Street was the south city limit of Lubbock, Texas.
- 50:17SPEAKER_02: He also, personal connection, he taught my very first class at Texas Tech, MCOM 1100.
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: That was the very first class, 9 a.m., my freshman year, fall semester.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, he and and what a way to go in to the guy that's represented the university with the utmost class, uh, and and just been the best.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: He really has.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: He's he's he's the best person ever.
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: Um, and I do have a funny story about Bill Dean.
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: I think I took three classes that he that he taught uh throughout my college career.
- 50:46SPEAKER_02: One of these was like a journalism class, I think it was my junior year.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: And we've most of us have seen Bill Dean walk around.
- 50:53SPEAKER_02: He is he's old, he's slow, uh, he's brittle.
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: He's an old guy.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: And and we were in this uh tight room where it had a step, and we all saw it.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was like it was like slow motion.
- 51:08SPEAKER_02: He misstepped and fell off of this step.
- 51:12SPEAKER_02: That was a pretty, I mean, a pretty high step, pretty significant for a lot of old people.
- 51:15SPEAKER_02: It would have it would have really truly hurt him.
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: This dude gets up immediately.
- 51:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, 80 years old, eight or seventy, whatever he was at the time, he was either late 70s or 80s, got up immediately.
- 51:29SPEAKER_02: We're like, oh my god, do we need to call 911?
- 51:32SPEAKER_02: Like, this dude just fell from a pretty significant distance for being that old.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: And dude got right back up and kept teaching, kept going with the class, no nothing.
- 51:40SPEAKER_02: He didn't break anything, he didn't hurt anything.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: He's the best, dude.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: He's an Iron Man and he is Texas Tech's uh representative.
- 51:48SPEAKER_05: Man, that that is such a great story, dude.
- 51:50SPEAKER_05: The Bill Dean Sex Machine, man.
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: I loved how you embrace that.
- 51:56SPEAKER_05: That was he's just such a cool dude, a guy that just never lost touch with his students either.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: So that it takes a special kind of person to be able to do what he did.

- 52:45SPEAKER_05: They're a huge inspiration for this podcast, and they've been nothing but awesome, friendly dudes towards us this whole time.
- 52:51SPEAKER_05: I remember Jackson immediately hopped into my DM after like our first episode and told me it's great stuff.

- 53:47SPEAKER_05: So hey man, we're getting there.
- 53:49SPEAKER_02: We're getting there.
- 53:49SPEAKER_02: 44, I think.
- 53:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: All right, this is we'll do something big for 50.
- 53:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 53:54SPEAKER_02: We'll do something big, but that's coming up here in the next month and a half, whatever.
- 53:58SPEAKER_02: So we'll move on to our final segment, like we do every week.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: We give a song of the week.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: We're gonna do something a little different because we like to shake it up, we like to have fun with it.
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna do guilty pleasure songs.
- 54:10SPEAKER_02: So guilty pleasure can be taken in a in a few ways.
- 54:13SPEAKER_02: You know, is it something that maybe uh you're a little embarrassed to love?
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's something that you know your friends will give you crap for, maybe it's something that you just enjoy listening to from your childhood still, and it may not be the best of songs, but you just love it because it's got that nostalgia factor.
- 54:28SPEAKER_02: But Tristan, what is your guilty pleasure song of the week?
- 54:32SPEAKER_05: Bro, I'm gonna hit you with my preteen, early teen days before I was Mr.
- 54:37SPEAKER_05: Country Music.
- 54:38SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go with one that you're gonna give me crap for.
- 54:41SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go with Angels and Airwaves.
- 54:44SPEAKER_05: Oh man.
- 54:45SPEAKER_05: Everything's magic.
- 54:59SPEAKER_05: Still a bop, man.
- 55:01SPEAKER_05: I that is probably the most listened to song in my entire life to this day.
- 55:06SPEAKER_05: And every once in a while, I'll just be like, you know what?
- 55:08SPEAKER_05: I've drank a few beers, you know, I'm listening to all this country music.
- 55:11SPEAKER_05: Let's just throw a little mix up in there and just listen to some angels and airwaves.
- 55:16SPEAKER_05: And hot take, man.
- 55:17SPEAKER_05: Angel and air angels and airwaves is better than Blink 182.
- 55:20SPEAKER_05: There, I said it.
- 55:21SPEAKER_05: Wow, maybe it's just my youth, and Blink 80 Blink 182 was a little before us, but yeah.
- 55:27SPEAKER_05: I gotta say, I'd rather sit there and listen to Angels and Airwaves than uh Blink 182.
- 55:32SPEAKER_02: I think you're in the very minority there.
- 55:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because Blink Blink has some bops that we all remember.
- 55:38SPEAKER_02: You know, first date's a great one, and then yes, obviously, what's their most famous song?
- 55:42SPEAKER_02: I can't even remember right now.
- 55:43SPEAKER_02: Uh uh shit.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: All the small things, all the small things, yes.
- 55:47SPEAKER_02: All the small things, you know.
- 55:49SPEAKER_02: Blink's Blink's great.
- 55:51SPEAKER_02: I never grew up listening to Angels and Airwaves, and I know you and our old friend Josh listened to a lot of that.
- 55:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, the whole group that we grew up with, middle school, high school, all that kind of stuff.
- 56:01SPEAKER_02: But uh, I mean, that's great.
- 56:03SPEAKER_02: That's a great guilty pleasure song, something from your past that you just love when it comes on, man.
- 56:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 56:09SPEAKER_05: That it definitely does not reflect my music taste now, but I can't deny that 13-year-old me is pumped when I put it on.
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: I could have gone a few different ways with this.
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: Um, I could have gone something super embarrassing of a of a band that I truly dislike, but I like this one song.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm not gonna do that.
- 56:28SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go with um I'm gonna go with One Sweet Day by Boys to Men featuring Mariah Carey.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: Together, together.
- 56:53SPEAKER_02: I love this song, dude.
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: It's such a good song.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: It's like boys to men.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: I like boys to men.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: I like boys to men.
- 57:03SPEAKER_02: I know it's like uh 40-year-old woman's favorite band.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: But uh this one with the young Mariah Carey, man, it is such a bop.
- 57:12SPEAKER_02: Everybody sings so good in it.
- 57:14SPEAKER_02: It's just fun to sing, man.
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: I'm in my car, I'll be driving to Lovick, Texas for a Texas Tech football game.
- 57:19SPEAKER_02: And one sweet day comes on and I'm all in it, man.
- 57:22SPEAKER_02: I will sing that song all the way through, and there is no shame.
- 57:25SPEAKER_05: Old dads everywhere are pumping their fists right now for your pick.
- 57:29SPEAKER_05: I know my dad is.
- 57:31SPEAKER_05: Jeez.
- 57:33SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 57:34SPEAKER_05: Interesting pick, man.
- 57:35SPEAKER_05: A little RB mix in there for my like emo punk rock, sort of.
- 57:41SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 57:42SPEAKER_05: I hope we take you back.
- 57:44SPEAKER_02: No matter what age you are.
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: This is this is a podcast where we cater to all ages here.

- 57:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we have to we have to do a series.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: This one was good.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: This is this is a good one.
- 57:57SPEAKER_02: I I have I have so many songs that I could have put on this, but we will probably do it one of these days.

- 58:23SPEAKER_05: That was an AM move.
- 58:24SPEAKER_05: That was a big AM move.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: Big AM move.
- 58:28SPEAKER_05: That's like Ohio State trying to trademark the, like unironically.
- 58:33SPEAKER_05: They tried to do that.
- 58:35SPEAKER_02: Not not a good luck for me.
- 58:37SPEAKER_05: When the patent office was like, you can't trademark the it's the most common word in the English language.
- 58:48SPEAKER_02: You cannot trademark it.
