Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So, as you know, it is an inauguration day and
- 0:03Speaker 1: about well, actually very shortly. I think Donald Trump will
- 0:06Speaker 1: take the oath of office and become the forty seventh
- 0:09Speaker 1: president of the United States. It's the first time since
- 0:13Speaker 1: eighteen ninety three year president has been sworn in for
- 0:15Speaker 1: a second non consecutive term, the last being Grover Cleveland.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Real Clear Political Politics senior election analyst Sean Trendy is
- 0:26Speaker 1: worth me now. Good morning, Sewan. Thank you so much
- 0:29Speaker 1: for being with.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Us, a thanks for having me.
- 0:32Speaker 1: How will President Trump's second term be different from his first?
- 0:36Speaker 2: I think the major difference is going to be that
- 0:38Speaker 2: this is not the ragtag band of people who didn't
- 0:41Speaker 2: expect to win in twenty sixteen. He has a much
- 0:45Speaker 2: more professionalized group behind him, and they expected to win,
- 0:51Speaker 2: so there's been planning. It's I think it's going to
- 0:53Speaker 2: be the same Trump, but we're going to see a
- 0:56Speaker 2: very different, more sophisticated administration.
- 1:01Speaker 1: How does knowing how Washington work change things.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Well, I think it's more of the same. When he
- 1:08Speaker 2: came into office, he didn't really know how to navigate
- 1:11Speaker 2: the very different the various different pitfalls that can befall
- 1:16Speaker 2: a new president. And he didn't really have anyone on
- 1:19Speaker 2: his team that knew much about that. That's different this time.
- 1:23Speaker 2: So again, I think a lot of his goals are
- 1:24Speaker 2: going to be the same. He's not going to be
- 1:28Speaker 2: someone that if he didn't like the first term, you're
- 1:31Speaker 2: going to like this time around. But I also think
- 1:34Speaker 2: it's going to be more a more effective administration the
- 1:37Speaker 2: term of achieving those goals.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And he's attempting to achieve quite a lot even on
- 1:42Speaker 1: his first day, isn't he.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, we've already received news that he's issuing an executive
- 1:49Speaker 2: order ending what we call birthrights citizenship that if you're
- 1:53Speaker 2: born in the United States, you know, even to people
- 1:57Speaker 2: in the country illegally considered a citizen. That's flying in
- 2:00Speaker 2: the face of one hundred and thirty years as Supreme
- 2:02Speaker 2: Court precedent. But he's definitely hitting the ground running this time.
- 2:08Speaker 1: We've seen a shift in Trump's close team. What do
- 2:11Speaker 1: they bring to this presidency?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Well, you know, I think I think we have, like
- 2:18Speaker 2: I said, a more serious and more experienced group of people.
- 2:24Speaker 2: You know, I think we were called back to twenty
- 2:26Speaker 2: sixteen where he needed a Secretary of State and he
- 2:30Speaker 2: for some reason put the president oil in that position,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and now you have Marco Rubio, who's a very different
- 2:37Speaker 2: member of that team. So I think, you know, it's
- 2:41Speaker 2: a different, different approach this.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Time around, and a bit of a different inauguration ceremony
- 2:47Speaker 1: taking place this morning as well.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's something that has some people kind of
- 2:53Speaker 2: scratching their heads a little bit. You know, it is
- 2:56Speaker 2: going to be cold, but it's not going to be
- 2:59Speaker 2: historically cold, but he's moved it inside. There's been some
- 3:03Speaker 2: speculation that some of this is due to security risks.
- 3:06Speaker 2: You know, he did have the two assassination attempts on him.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But yeah, it's going to be a more sedate inauguration
- 3:16Speaker 2: this time around. At least we won't be fighting about
- 3:19Speaker 2: crowd sizes this time.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Well, there wasn't. There was sort of a few comments
- 3:24Speaker 1: that maybe that's what he was concerned about as to
- 3:26Speaker 1: why he moved it inside. Is that fair?
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think that he was a little
- 3:33Speaker 2: bit concerned about the crowd sizes, that people wouldn't show
- 3:36Speaker 2: up if it was cold, that he would get negative
- 3:38Speaker 2: comparisons to Barack Obama, who you know, was really cold
- 3:42Speaker 2: when he has inaugurated and he filled them all. Look,
- 3:46Speaker 2: I prefer this to what we had in twenty sixteen,
- 3:48Speaker 2: when the first thing he did was send his press
- 3:50Speaker 2: secretary out to lie about the crowd sizes. You know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, as long as
- 3:56Speaker 2: his hands on the book and he recites the oath
- 3:59Speaker 2: of office, he is president.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Sean, are we seeing more celebration around this inaugurration? I
- 4:05Speaker 1: see that an idolor so ago, you know, who's who
- 4:08Speaker 1: of Silicon Valley was in Washington, DC celebrating at a party.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, there's been a little bit of a
- 4:16Speaker 2: vibe shift, as we say here in the states are
- 4:18Speaker 2: surrounding the Silicon Valley. They seem to have moved rightward
- 4:24Speaker 2: over the course of the past decade. I also think,
- 4:26Speaker 2: you know, he won the most votes this time around,
- 4:30Speaker 2: unlike twenty sixteen, and so I think there's just a
- 4:34Speaker 2: general sense of legitimacy about this presidency that there wasn't
- 4:40Speaker 2: in twenty sixteen and is showing up in who supports
- 4:42Speaker 2: it and how they support it.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Sean Trendy, thank you so much for your time this morning.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Appreciate it.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Thank you for more.
