- 0:00Hey everybody, welcome back to Unlocking the Paradigm portal.
- 0:03My name is Sarah. I need to tell you something
- 0:06before I get into today's episode.
- 0:09So this week's Monday and Wednesday episodes, I made them,
- 0:12I showed up, but I'm going to be really honest with you about
- 0:15where I actually was while I was making them.
- 0:18I didn't know it was Wednesday until 5:00 AM Wednesday morning
- 0:21when my alarm went off and I freaked out because I had
- 0:24nothing planned. So I threw together an episode
- 0:27about circling back to your emotional meter when you've lost
- 0:29sight of it. And I recorded it, and I
- 0:32uploaded it. And then I went right back to
- 0:34what I'd been doing for days. And today I almost forgot that
- 0:39today existed entirely. I'm recording this right now in
- 0:44my pyjamas, on my couch, under a blanket.
- 0:46Because about an hour ago, I remember that tomorrow is a
- 0:50podcast day. It's about 9:00 on Thursday
- 0:53evening. And this is a podcast about
- 0:56emotional honesty made by someone who has been so
- 0:59completely somewhere else this week that the days stopped
- 1:01registering. And I want to talk about where
- 1:04I've been because I think it's the most important thing I've
- 1:06said in this series yet. I have been deep, and I mean
- 1:10completely, totally, joyfully lost in building a world.
- 1:14It's a fictional world. There's characters, storylines,
- 1:16emotional architecture. It's the kind of building I
- 1:19haven't done in more years than I can count.
- 1:22And when I'm in it, the entire external world ceases to exist.
- 1:28I mean, literally, I notice nothing and I feel alive in a
- 1:32way that's really hard to describe to someone who hasn't
- 1:34experienced it. Because it's not about
- 1:37productivity or accomplishment. It's about passion and drive and
- 1:42creativity. And here's why this matters.
- 1:45I was five years old the first time that I felt that.
- 1:47And I spent every bit of my free time developing characters and
- 1:52storylines. And I filled pages and pages of
- 1:54wide ruled notebook paper with stories and character
- 1:58descriptions. And I would bind those pages
- 2:00with little pieces of, I had a specific preference for this,
- 2:04like maroon colored yarn that I would tie little knots in so
- 2:08that I made my own books. And then I went to college and I
- 2:11got a degree in creative writing, which was super fun to
- 2:14get. And weirdly enough, I loved my
- 2:16class in Middle English. It really had no purpose, but I
- 2:20loved it. And that whole degree was great
- 2:23to get, but useless unless you're going to be a professor,
- 2:25which I was going to do, and then I didn't.
- 2:28So The thing is, I was doing that and I was living it.
- 2:33And then it went quiet and life happened, and other things felt
- 2:37much more urgent and more practical and more like what I
- 2:40was supposed to be doing because I was a goddamn adult.
- 2:44And slowly, without me ever deciding to stop, the writing
- 2:47did. And for years I told myself that
- 2:50my creativity was just gone, and that I'd had it once and somehow
- 2:54used it up like it was a finite resource.
- 2:57Or that it had kind of bounced off the back of my trucker out
- 3:00of my car along the way. And that maybe I wasn't really a
- 3:04creative person anymore. Or that I've been faking it all
- 3:07along. Or that if I tried, not only
- 3:10would it not be good enough, it would full on suck.
- 3:13And that spark felt dim. And I was genuinely afraid that
- 3:18if I tried to light it and nothing happened, I'd have to
- 3:21admit that it was really gone. So I didn't even try.
- 3:24And then one day, my mystical, magical Unicorn of a daughter,
- 3:28Quinn, who was about 5 years old at the time, asked me to tell
- 3:31her a story and I couldn't. It was shocking.
- 3:35I was literally stunned. I sat there and I had nothing.
- 3:39And I told her the truth. I said I think my creativity
- 3:42disappeared and I don't know where it went.
- 3:45And she looked at me and said, would you like help finding it?
- 3:50She was a child and she didn't go looking for it in my mind.
- 3:53She didn't ask me to analyze it or explain it or figure out what
- 3:56went wrong. She just opened a door and
- 3:59something small and warm came through it.
- 4:02And that was the beginning. But I still found other things
- 4:05that felt like higher priorities.
- 4:07I still told myself the spark was dim and that I might not be
- 4:11able to do it the way that I used to.
- 4:13The door was open, but I wasn't walking through it until this
- 4:16week. So this week, after months of
- 4:20deep internal work, mapping patterns, following threads,
- 4:23connecting dots across my entire life, something ignited.
- 4:26And I don't mean it flickered. It full on ignited into a
- 4:29bonfire and I realized something.
- 4:33The spark was never gone. I just wasn't looking in the
- 4:36right place. I was searching my mind and it
- 4:39was living in my body. So I want to speak to someone
- 4:43right now. And this is where this whole
- 4:45episode's going to change up, so stay with me.
- 4:48And that someone is a little girl sitting at an old
- 4:51typewriter. That's what I switched to after
- 4:54the paper and I had a story. That little girl had a story
- 4:58that she couldn't get out fast enough.
- 5:01So I'm going to talk to her. I wrote her a little letter.
- 5:05And if you have a version of that child inside of you, I'm
- 5:09going to talk to yours too. So let this sink in, OK?
- 5:15I'm just going to start, and I might cry a little bit, so just
- 5:18go with it. Hey, I see you and I know you've
- 5:23been waiting. Not impatiently.
- 5:25You're not angry, you're just there the way you've always been
- 5:29there, curled up somewhere quiet inside, keeping the stories
- 5:32warm, waiting for someone to come looking.
- 5:36And I know that I looked in all the wrong places for a long
- 5:39time. I looked in my head and logic
- 5:42and analysis and the question of whether I was still good enough
- 5:46to do what you always did so naturally.
- 5:50And I kept trying to think my way back to you, but you were
- 5:54never in my thoughts. You were always in my hands when
- 5:57they moved across a keyboard in my chest.
- 6:00When a character said exactly the right thing.
- 6:03In that really gentle kind of silence where the external world
- 6:08goes quiet because something more real is happening inside.
- 6:12I didn't lose you. I stopped feeling for you.
- 6:15And when I stopped feeling for you, you did what any living
- 6:20thing does when it's ignored long enough.
- 6:22You got quiet and you waited in the shadows, and you've been
- 6:27waiting this whole time. My daughter asked me if she
- 6:31could help me find you. A child knew to look somewhere
- 6:35I'd forgotten to look. She didn't try to explain you or
- 6:39rebuild you from the outside in. She just made space, and you
- 6:44moved toward her light. And I'm sorry it took me so long
- 6:49to come back, but I'm here now, under a blanket on the couch, in
- 6:53my pyjamas, snuggled up with Quinn's stuffed pink elephant
- 6:58named Pinky, completely alive, and the entire external world is
- 7:04gone. That's you.
- 7:06That's what you feel like I'd forgotten, but now I remember.
- 7:12Don't go quiet again, ever again.
- 7:14I'm listening now. So if that resonated for you at
- 7:20all, then roll with that. What it does your inner child
- 7:26need right now? Where is that spark that you've
- 7:29been searching for in your mind and not in your body?
- 7:32Because that kid is in there for you too.
- 7:35Whatever version of them exists inside of you, The one who used
- 7:40to paint or sing or build things or move their body like it was
- 7:43made for joy or love without protecting themselves first.
- 7:48They didn't disappear. You stop feeling for them.
- 7:52There's a difference, and it's a very important one.
- 7:56Gone means it's over. Unfelt means you've been
- 7:59searching in the wrong place. And most of us look for the
- 8:03things that we've lost in our minds.
- 8:06We try to think our way back to passion, to creativity, to that
- 8:09feeling of being alive, and we analyze what went wrong.
- 8:14We make plans to do better, and we try to logic ourselves into
- 8:18feeling something we used to feel naturally, without even a
- 8:22thought. But the things we've lost, the
- 8:25real things, those alive things, they don't live in thought.
- 8:29They live in sensation, in the body, in the thing that happens
- 8:33in your chest when you're doing exactly what you're meant to be
- 8:36doing, and the whole world falls away.
- 8:41So I want to ask you something, and I want you to actually stop
- 8:45and feel for the answer, not think for it.
- 8:48What is the last thing that had you so completely that you
- 8:52forgot what day it was? Not the last thing you
- 8:56accomplished, Not the last thing you checked off a list.
- 9:00The last thing that made the external world go quiet because
- 9:04something more real was happening inside.
- 9:08If something came to mind, good. That's the thread.
- 9:11Follow it. And if nothing came, that's
- 9:14information too. It's not a verdict, it's
- 9:17information. And it might mean that child has
- 9:20been quiet for a long time, and it might mean you've been
- 9:24looking in your mind instead of your body.
- 9:27And it might mean the door is just waiting for someone to open
- 9:30it. Maybe you need to ask someone to
- 9:33help you find it again, like I did.
- 9:36And maybe, just maybe, that someone is closer than you
- 9:39think. Maybe it's a child, Maybe it's a
- 9:42friend, the part of yourself that still remembers.
- 9:48So I'm going back to the book as soon as I'm done with this.
- 9:52And I'm not going to apologize for that.
- 9:54I'm not going to call it indulgent or irresponsible or a
- 9:56distraction from real life. It is my real life.
- 10:00The five year old who was sitting with her notebook paper
- 10:03and eventually a typewriter is my real life.
- 10:07But before I go, I'm going to do the thing I asked you to do on
- 10:10Monday. I'm going to put a hand on my
- 10:12chest and breathe into it and connect back to my emotional
- 10:16meter right now. So do it with me, OK?
- 10:24What's here? It feels warm, it feels full.
- 10:32It feels like expansive, like wings expanding out.
- 10:38Feels a little bit tearful, honestly.
- 10:40And underneath all of that is this feeling of coming home.
- 10:44That's what my inner child feels like.
- 10:47That's what yours will feel like when you find them and you'll
- 10:50know. So if this found someone who
- 10:53needed it, fantastic. And if you know someone who
- 10:57needs it, send it to them. It's not to fix anything.
- 11:01It's just so you and they know that child is not gone.
- 11:05They're just waiting to be felt for.
- 11:08So tap into your emotional meter this week and see what you find
- 11:13and share it with me in the comments.
- 11:16All right, I will be back Sunday for a deep dive.
- 11:19Have a wonderful day.
