Gertrude Bell - Part 2: The adventure begins across the sea
As Gertrude Bell's ship glided over the smooth waters of the Mediterranean, anticipation surged within her. The vessel's wake left a thin white cut against the sea, warm heat wrapping around her like a second skin. The first sight of the eastern shore was intimate, a tumble of low buildings kissed by sand, and a breeze carrying perfumes and grit that would soon coat her mouth. Upon disembarking, she was met with a cacophony of sound: donkey bells, market cries, and the slow, irregular call of a port buzzing with life.
