Latest / Sidekick's What Just Shipped / HubSpot Customer Agent Segments: one agent, different answers per audience | Shipped Jun 2026
Transcript
- Rob (AI host): A German shopper, an enterprise subscriber, and a business buyer all open the same chat. Rob (AI host): Should they get the same answer? Dana (AI host): With Customer Agent Segments, they don't have to. Dana (AI host): HubSpot says you can configure up to twenty five segments per agent. Rob (AI host): This is Sidekick's What Just Shipped. Let's go. Narrator (AI voice): This is Sidekick's What Just Shipped, presented by Sidekick Strategies. Narrator (AI voice): Your hosts, Rob and Dana, are AI. Narrator (AI voice): The voices are synthetic, the research is real, and humans check every claim before it reaches you. Dana (AI host): Hey, welcome in! I'm Dana. Dana (AI host): Rob and I are AI hosts, so an episode about an AI agent changing its answers by audience? Dana (AI host): We relate. Rob (AI host): We contain multitudes. Okay, what is this? Dana (AI host): HubSpot says audience segments let you tailor the customer agent's responses for different groups of visitors. Dana (AI host): Each segment gets its own knowledge sources, guidelines, and human handoff process. Rob (AI host): And before this? Dana (AI host): Our June research says every visitor got the same agent with the same knowledge base. Rob (AI host): Why does that hurt? Dana (AI host): Our research gave a simple example. Dana (AI host): If you run free and paid tiers, you don't want free users seeing enterprise pricing. Dana (AI host): And a visitor in Stockholm shouldn't get English only documentation. Rob (AI host): Yeah. The agent wasn't wrong, it just couldn't tell people apart. Rob (AI host): So how did it roll out? Dana (AI host): Three steps. June 2026, our research covered a private beta focused on knowledge. Dana (AI host): Up to twenty five segments, with segment knowledge stacking on top of the default knowledge. Rob (AI host): Then August? Dana (AI host): Our research says it moved to public beta on August 6, 2026, adding segment specific follow up actions and a new Segment Details page. Rob (AI host): And October? Dana (AI host): Our October research described it as live for Professional and Enterprise, with segments shaping knowledge, actions, communication guidelines, and human handoff. Dana (AI host): Plus a setup wizard where you describe your audience in plain language. Rob (AI host): Wait, live meaning out of beta? Dana (AI host): That's the open question. HubSpot's help page, updated today, October 29, 2026, has no beta label. Dana (AI host): But we didn't find a dated announcement that it left beta. Rob (AI host): Fair. How do you define a segment? Dana (AI host): HubSpot lists three ways. Dana (AI host): Contact properties, existing CRM segment membership, or visitor context, like language or country. Dana (AI host): And you can combine them with and, or logic. Rob (AI host): Give me HubSpot's examples. Dana (AI host): Language is German or country is Germany. Plan tier is Enterprise. Dana (AI host): Or member of a VIP Customers segment, routed to a dedicated team. Rob (AI host): What if someone matches two? Dana (AI host): Only one segment applies to a conversation. The highest priority one wins. Dana (AI host): No match, and the agent uses its default setup. Rob (AI host): And the knowledge? Dana (AI host): HubSpot says a matched visitor gets the agent's general knowledge plus the sources assigned to that segment. Rob (AI host): And mapping content is easier now? Dana (AI host): Our August research says when you add a knowledge source, the last step asks, who should your agent use this content with? Dana (AI host): You pick segments right there. Rob (AI host): Quick break, then a conflict, and how to test this. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Hey, it's George B. Thomas from Sidekick Strategies. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Full honesty, this is my AI voice clone, made with my permission. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Segments run on CRM properties. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): If your plan tier or country fields are blank or wrong, the agent picks the wrong audience. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): At Sidekick, we fix what's broken and build what's missing, and we train your humans to run it. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Want help mapping your audiences before you build segments? George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Book a free strategy call at Sidekick Strategies dot com. Rob (AI host): And we're back. You said conflict. Dana (AI host): Actions. Dana (AI host): Our August and October research both say you can scope actions, like meeting booking or lead qualification, to a segment. Rob (AI host): Okay. Dana (AI host): But HubSpot's help page describes knowledge sources, guidelines, and handoff per segment. Dana (AI host): We didn't find segment specific actions on that page. Rob (AI host): So check your own portal before you promise demo booking for enterprise only. Dana (AI host): Exactly. Rob (AI host): What about anonymous visitors? Dana (AI host): HubSpot says if email capture is off, the agent can ask qualifying questions based on the properties in your segment filters. Dana (AI host): Then it answers with that segment's setup. Rob (AI host): And those answers go where? Dana (AI host): HubSpot says when a visitor is identified, properties collected that way sync to their CRM contact record. Dana (AI host): And there's a CRM usage tab to choose which properties the agent may ask about. Rob (AI host): Good to know. Handoff routing? Dana (AI host): There's a workflow template called Reassign ticket based on audience segment for customer agent handoff. Dana (AI host): So business buyers can go to a specialist team. Rob (AI host): And guidelines per segment means what, exactly? Dana (AI host): HubSpot says you can tailor the agent's tone, response style, and instructions for specific segments. Dana (AI host): So enterprise subscribers can get a more detailed, technical style than first time shoppers. Dana (AI host): That second part is our example, not HubSpot's. Rob (AI host): Where do you build all this? Dana (AI host): HubSpot's path is Service, then Customer Agent, then Define, then Segments. Dana (AI host): The table shows priority, an Enabled switch, and an Applied to column, so you can see where each segment is used. Dana (AI host): You drag rows to reorder priority. Rob (AI host): And testing? Dana (AI host): In the test panel, pick Test as a segment, choose one, and check the knowledge, guidelines, and handoff behave as expected. Rob (AI host): Who gets it? Dana (AI host): HubSpot lists Professional and Enterprise on Marketing, Sales, Service, Data, and Content Hub, plus Smart CRM. Dana (AI host): Credits are required for certain features. Rob (AI host): Okay. Monday. Three things. Dana (AI host): One. Dana (AI host): List your audiences and the CRM properties that identify them, and check those fields are filled in. Rob (AI host): Two? Dana (AI host): Two. Set your priority order on purpose, because only one segment wins. Rob (AI host): And three? Dana (AI host): Three. Test as each segment before you turn it on. Rob (AI host): Any example from HubSpot that ties it together? Dana (AI host): Their help page has one. Dana (AI host): A store creates three segments, German speaking shoppers, enterprise subscribers, and business buyers, all in one customer agent, instead of separate agents. Dana (AI host): That's an illustration from HubSpot, not a real customer we checked. Rob (AI host): Map, prioritize, test. Got it. Dana (AI host): That's our show. Dana (AI host): Customer Agent Segments went from a June 2026 private beta to a public beta in August, and HubSpot's help page today shows no beta label. Rob (AI host): Our full research is on the HubSpot Updates page at Sidekick Strategies dot com. Dana (AI host): Thanks for listening to Sidekick's What Just Shipped.
