- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I've needed a lot of time to process and decompress
- 0:13Speaker 2: and talk about the horrific assassination of Charlie Kirk. I
- 0:20Speaker 2: needed a lot of time to process and talk about
- 0:24Speaker 2: twenty four years since ninety eleven. And you know what
- 0:28Speaker 2: I'm taking comfort in right this moment is the Major
- 0:33Speaker 2: League Baseball logo that was rolled out the very first
- 0:38Speaker 2: anniversary of September eleventh, And they've put that logo on
- 0:42Speaker 2: the boards across America and across ballparks in America the
- 0:48Speaker 2: last twenty three years, and I think it's a reminder
- 0:54Speaker 2: that we can find comfort in baseball. It gave us
- 0:58Speaker 2: comfort in the fall of two thousand and one. We
- 1:02Speaker 2: can find comfort in the game of baseball that I
- 1:05Speaker 2: can't find comfort anywhere else because it's a homegrown feel.
- 1:13Speaker 2: It's an era where that Piazza homer on September twenty one,
- 1:18Speaker 2: two thousand and one, and then the Yankees magical run
- 1:22Speaker 2: in the World Series. Sure you would have wanted that
- 1:26Speaker 2: under your belt to make it a four peat, and
- 1:29Speaker 2: with everything going on following the terror attacks of September eleventh,
- 1:36Speaker 2: But as a nine year old watching that hole fall unfold,
- 1:43Speaker 2: and then a year later be at the anniversary of
- 1:46Speaker 2: nine to eleven where they put that logo on the
- 1:48Speaker 2: board against the Orioles. It brings me back to that
- 1:52Speaker 2: comfort of what baseball can do, how it can heal us.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And I'm common enough now thanks to this logo to
- 2:02Speaker 2: share with you how it feels. The fact of the
- 2:05Speaker 2: matter is, Charlie Kirk was a member of as you know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: I work on Salem.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Media Group and just a few weeks.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Ago Mike Gallagher calling me a loyal employee of Sale Media.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I mean that's a SoundBite for the records. Well, Charlie
- 2:21Speaker 2: Kirk not only was a loyal employee to Salem Media,
- 2:28Speaker 2: he was out there doing public discourse. And yes, Ben
- 2:32Speaker 2: Shapiro does that too, but hitting the college campuses that
- 2:36Speaker 2: Charlie Kirk.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Did year after year.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Like he did yesterday and was supposed to complete yesterday,
- 2:48Speaker 2: probably has impacted so many lives. He probably didn't realize it.
- 2:54Speaker 2: But then I think of the radio side more because
- 2:57Speaker 2: either before him when he was on twelve to two,
- 3:01Speaker 2: or after him, either on the Piscopo hours or the
- 3:06Speaker 2: Gallagher hours before he would be on, or after him
- 3:09Speaker 2: with Idella. I feel like I lost a radio brother
- 3:15Speaker 2: and a colleague because we did share those same airwaves
- 3:19Speaker 2: at different times. And whatever you believe or don't believe,
- 3:27Speaker 2: he would say he was a human being and the
- 3:35Speaker 2: way he was assassinated in cold blood is unacceptable.
- 3:44Speaker 1: You can ask Ryan.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I was slamming the table four or five times yesterday.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Because of the heinousness of.
- 3:54Speaker 2: This, the uneasy way someone for two hundred dollars yards
- 3:59Speaker 2: out could just kill a political opponent. And I've tried
- 4:12Speaker 2: to also think about the way this impacts my world,
- 4:21Speaker 2: because he and I are not too much older ages apart.
- 4:28Speaker 2: He was thirty one continuing to launch his Turning Point
- 4:35Speaker 2: USA even more and I'm thirty three, also working on launching.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And we make our livings. And Charlie made his living.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Opining, yes from the right side of things, but opining
- 5:08Speaker 2: about the news of the day, the culture of the day.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And he made his mark.
- 5:20Speaker 2: That's why Phil Boyce brought him on here a few
- 5:23Speaker 2: years ago to Salem Media because he could see he
- 5:31Speaker 2: was making his mark at the time, and he influenced
- 5:38Speaker 2: so many.
- 5:41Speaker 1: To vote for Trump. Yes, but he was an influencer.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And if you ever noticed his videos of public debate.
- 5:51Speaker 1: It seems that he was not.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Aggressive with the.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Debater, He was not.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Rude to them, let them talk, and then he would
- 6:02Speaker 2: take him to school a little bit, wouldn't he.
- 6:06Speaker 1: On a wide array of subjects. But the bigger.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Question is what we still be able to have political
- 6:25Speaker 2: discourse after this clear, clear targeting, an assassination of a
- 6:36Speaker 2: political opponent took place.
- 6:42Speaker 1: It's troubling.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I think it's podcaster and it's people on the air
- 6:49Speaker 2: in different capacities. We should all feel a comfort in
- 6:57Speaker 2: being able to express ourselves without intimidity, a feeling like
- 7:10Speaker 2: you be intimidated for it. That's the freedom of speech.
- 7:16Speaker 2: That is the first Amendment. We should be able to
- 7:21Speaker 2: live in a society where we can go to work
- 7:23Speaker 2: and not have to worry about being stabbed to death
- 7:30Speaker 2: on a Charlotte rail We should be able to go
- 7:36Speaker 2: to a Mitzvah truck and do our daily mitsva if
- 7:40Speaker 2: you are a Jewish person, without being intimidated for it,
- 7:45Speaker 2: without being circled by the vultures. And personally, I think
- 7:56Speaker 2: I should be able to walk out of my radio
- 7:58Speaker 2: studio after a long day of engineering and producing feeling
- 8:05Speaker 2: not a feeling about what a good day it was
- 8:10Speaker 2: and not having to look over my shoulder, Oh is
- 8:12Speaker 2: there a protesters or someone there the founder or address
- 8:15Speaker 2: on the website.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I mean, it's just run.
- 8:19Speaker 2: A lot of thoughts through my head. And though I
- 8:28Speaker 2: cannot ascribe to all the views that Charlie Kirk has
- 8:34Speaker 2: talked about, that's the distinction someone I cannot ascribe to
- 8:40Speaker 2: all the views, I can say.
- 8:48Speaker 1: He stood firm in what he believed.
- 8:58Speaker 2: And probably you know it has changed so many lives
- 9:02Speaker 2: with those beliefs, and that should be celebrated. I was
- 9:10Speaker 2: calling Mike Gallagher today. It calls mean for Mike Gallagher.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Someone went on the air and said, you know, Charlie
- 9:16Speaker 2: brought me closer to God. That's a special call to
- 9:21Speaker 2: take right there. And so as someone who's originally behind
- 9:28Speaker 2: the scenes, was hired to be behind the scenes, only
- 9:31Speaker 2: getting more airtime since the really twenty two starting point
- 9:37Speaker 2: with the Episcopal Joe Piscopo show. Over the years and
- 9:42Speaker 2: in my health and now shake it off Martin Lucas,
- 9:48Speaker 2: I've thought about it a lot since this horrific assassination
- 9:54Speaker 2: of someone just two years younger than me. If they're
- 10:01Speaker 2: going to come after the up and coming thirty plus
- 10:05Speaker 2: year olds. Do I step behind the scenes or do
- 10:14Speaker 2: I just keep plugging along and talking about what's on
- 10:20Speaker 2: my heart every day? On one look up Alex Network.
- 10:31Speaker 2: See the whole point of the shooting was not just
- 10:34Speaker 2: to shoot and kill horrifically Charlie Kirk. It was the silence,
- 10:41Speaker 2: dissent and disagreement. But we should not let them silence us.
- 10:50Speaker 2: No matter what view you might have, you should be
- 10:56Speaker 2: able to freely express it. Look at how many and
- 11:10Speaker 2: people got me grup for this, but look how many
- 11:12Speaker 2: protests have really only gotten bad because people started skirmishes
- 11:19Speaker 2: with the cops, not really the other way around.
- 11:22Speaker 1: We've seen videos.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Of screaming people protesters at cops. Cops really didn't do
- 11:30Speaker 2: anything unless it got physical. I've seen Fifth Avenue be
- 11:46Speaker 2: divided between pro Trump and anti Trump protests. Maybe the
- 11:53Speaker 2: key was across the street, but it didn't get violent.
- 11:58Speaker 2: They were able to expe rest themselves without harm or issue.
- 12:10Speaker 2: We need to get back to that discourse where yes,
- 12:14Speaker 2: you're gonna have two opposing sides.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And still.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Come out of it unscathed and maybe through the protesting
- 12:27Speaker 2: learn from each other, talk to each other. I wrote
- 12:33Speaker 2: this about nine to eleven, and I feel it's so
- 12:36Speaker 2: so important today. I said it was a tragic beginning
- 12:54Speaker 2: to the fall of two thousand and one. It however,
- 12:59Speaker 2: did show our resilience an underlying want to be unified.
- 13:05Speaker 2: And while I know tomorrow September twelve will go back
- 13:10Speaker 2: to arguing about today's world, let's work on unity instead
- 13:16Speaker 2: of division. It's what those who lost their lives on
- 13:24Speaker 2: September eleventh, two.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Thousand and one would want.
- 13:29Speaker 2: How did we go from a Congress that's saying God
- 13:34Speaker 2: bless America in unison on the steps of the Capitol
- 13:44Speaker 2: to now a political opponent, a political dissident gunned down
- 13:59Speaker 2: in two shore a time. And I have often ascribed
- 14:09Speaker 2: to the idea that God has our time of return
- 14:14Speaker 2: home and his etched in us somewhere, we just.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Don't know it.
- 14:22Speaker 2: But these acts of evil should not speed up God's
- 14:30Speaker 2: It should not speed up someone's expiration date. Let me
- 14:35Speaker 2: say that again. These acts of evil should not be
- 14:43Speaker 2: able to speed up someone's expiration date.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And what do I mean by that?
- 14:54Speaker 2: If someone gets in their wonky head to gun down
- 14:58Speaker 2: someone they disagree with, they're not only killing a human life,
- 15:09Speaker 2: this case a husband and a dad of two. But
- 15:19Speaker 2: they are also ruining I feel, God's plan and cutting
- 15:29Speaker 2: it short, and yes, in the sense expediting the expiration date.
- 15:36Speaker 2: So how do we stop those from not only committing evil,
- 15:41Speaker 2: but from expediting expiration dates we all have somewhere within
- 15:46Speaker 2: our DNA. How do we stop it? How about we
- 15:56Speaker 2: first unify? How about we first unify and take comfort
- 16:21Speaker 2: that we have each other's back. And I think in
- 16:23Speaker 2: a way people are going to take comfort in some
- 16:30Speaker 2: odd way. I can't take comfort in it. I can't
- 16:43Speaker 2: take comfort that he's gone home to the Lord. It's
- 16:46Speaker 2: too early for him to go.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Home to the Lord.
- 16:56Speaker 2: This killer ruined God from That is the point. Evil
- 17:02Speaker 2: ruins God's plans. It's not that God isn't there for us.
- 17:05Speaker 2: It's that evil ruins God's plans.
- 17:13Speaker 1: And we have to wipe that out. We have to
- 17:17Speaker 1: wipe out that evil that now I feel.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Could be lurking on our shoulders and daisy every step
- 17:37Speaker 2: of the way. It feels like that.
- 17:41Speaker 1: But let's work together.
- 17:44Speaker 2: On preventing evil from ruining God's plan for us. And again,
- 17:58Speaker 2: it the that gun crowd is chiming in and rightfully
- 18:03Speaker 2: so here. But this has to do with the heart,
- 18:07Speaker 2: That's what it has to do with. There was someone
- 18:11Speaker 2: who've vehemianly disagreed with Charlie Kirk and decided to take
- 18:15Speaker 2: him out. That's not the America I know or was
- 18:25Speaker 2: raised in. We don't kill off political opponents. We have
- 18:36Speaker 2: public discourse, we have debates. I always say this country
- 18:48Speaker 2: was formed through debate. I always say, if the founding
- 18:58Speaker 2: fathers didn't debate to make it, we wouldn't be a
- 19:00Speaker 2: free country right now. But debate got us here two
- 19:05Speaker 2: hundred and forty nine years later, and I prayed debate
- 19:12Speaker 2: will still be alive and well to get us to
- 19:15Speaker 2: two hundred two years and beyond, because that's the only way.
- 19:19Speaker 2: If we hear each other, if we listen to each other,
- 19:21Speaker 2: not just hear each other, listen to each other.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Then yes, we can move forward.
- 19:30Speaker 2: We can get to the year two fifty m beyond.
- 19:35Speaker 2: As I think about this, Charlie Kirk was exercising what
- 19:42Speaker 2: the Founding Fathers built our country on. He held the
- 19:48Speaker 2: public square, and that public square should be accessible to.
- 19:54Speaker 1: All, not one viewpoint.
- 19:59Speaker 2: There have been so many colleges that cancel a quote
- 20:02Speaker 2: unquote right wing speaker. I remember that they had to
- 20:09Speaker 2: shut down the Schumer book tour when he agreed with
- 20:11Speaker 2: Trump to not close the government down. So it truly
- 20:18Speaker 2: lurks in both directions, the idea of being canceled, the
- 20:26Speaker 2: idea of.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Succumbing to.
- 20:31Speaker 2: The woke bob, which Charlie I don't think ever did,
- 20:37Speaker 2: by the way.
- 20:43Speaker 1: And so as I wrapped my head.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Around being affiliated, let me say this way, as I
- 20:49Speaker 2: wrapped my head around being on that same airwaves as
- 20:52Speaker 2: Charlie Kirk, and though trying to bring a very different
- 20:58Speaker 2: approach to the airway, whenever I get a chance to
- 21:01Speaker 2: be on, I asked myself, and I pray to myself,
- 21:15Speaker 2: pray to God, actually.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Pray to God, that.
- 21:27Speaker 2: I should still to tell me whether I should still
- 21:30Speaker 2: be speaking up or not, or whether I should go
- 21:35Speaker 2: behind the scenes. But that wouldn't be what Charlie Kirk
- 21:42Speaker 2: would want for anybody in the media world, and it
- 21:48Speaker 2: wouldn't be what my parents raised me to do. My
- 21:54Speaker 2: mom's a journalist. She wrote and wrote and wrote. My
- 21:58Speaker 2: dad listened to talk raative, listen to the public discourse.
- 22:01Speaker 2: That's how I got involved with all of this, and
- 22:07Speaker 2: If I were to shut up now, I'd be doing
- 22:08Speaker 2: a disservice, firstly to the fifty thousand people that have
- 22:16Speaker 2: thankfully downloaded, and to myself, and to what Charlie Kirk's
- 22:31Speaker 2: message is, which is, have the public discourse, have the debate,
- 22:35Speaker 2: have the conversation, so God bless it. Let's have it
- 22:41Speaker 2: nearly every day here at one look up Alex
