- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 2: That's right, NHL Unscripted. The Puck has dropped. It's episode fifty.
- 0:24Speaker 1: This is a big one for me and JD and
- 0:26Speaker 1: coming up with discussing lots of great tops including Sandano Chara.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Just how much of a psycho was he is? He'll
- 0:31Speaker 1: get his number retire for the Boston Bruins. Maddie Ice
- 0:34Speaker 1: has arrived and this is a huge gept for us.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Episode fifty tal getting it done. The incredible Chris Berman
- 0:40Speaker 1: will join us the ESPN Legend to tell stories about
- 0:42Speaker 1: being a harperd Whalers table, go oh the way, We'll
- 0:47Speaker 1: talk football cameras and all the best of this is
- 0:49Speaker 1: big j D.
- 0:50Speaker 2: But the fact we got Boomer Today's mass Boomer.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Are you excited?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Are you kidding? Yeah?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Boomer, I mean absolute ESPN legend. You know, I get
- 0:58Speaker 1: to work there nine years, spend him a few times.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It was awesome to this day when people say you
- 1:01Speaker 1: work to the spind you met Chris Berman, Like, that's
- 1:03Speaker 1: one of the first questions you get.
- 1:04Speaker 2: He's such his gun.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like I went to I was going to
- 1:07Speaker 3: sleep as a kid listening to his highlights, you know, like, yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 3: we all were. I just think it's like he's been
- 1:13Speaker 3: around for so long and so iconic, it's gonna be
- 1:16Speaker 3: cool to just pick his brain a little bit.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I completely agree. The longevity is amazing.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Before we get into the hockey that took place last night,
- 1:23Speaker 1: the Return of the mac Connor, McDavid finally signed his
- 1:26Speaker 1: extension two years, twenty five million dollars.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I was off the prediction, JD. I thought two years
- 1:31Speaker 2: thirty five million dollars, so ten million dollars. I was
- 1:33Speaker 2: off by clearly taking a.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Bit of a hometown discount after Capriesof's eight year, one
- 1:37Speaker 1: thirty six McDavid. Now the fact he didn't get as
- 1:40Speaker 1: much as he could have got, they signed defenseman Jake
- 1:42Speaker 1: Wollman seven years, forty nine million dollars. Mcdane'll ba a
- 1:45Speaker 1: UFA again in three years when he's thirty one years
- 1:48Speaker 1: of age. You predicted this, you said, I'm thinking small term.
- 1:50Speaker 1: He'll get his money, maybe a littless money because he
- 1:52Speaker 1: wants up the team win.
- 1:53Speaker 2: What do you make a two for twenty five for.
- 1:55Speaker 3: McDavid, Jack Nicholson, I uh, I predicted I didn't predict
- 2:02Speaker 3: him to go that. I think short term, yeah, I
- 2:08Speaker 3: predicted the short term, I could not predict predicted. I
- 2:11Speaker 3: don't think anybody could have predicted the level of selflessness
- 2:14Speaker 3: that this guy showed taking that deal and for that
- 2:17Speaker 3: amount of money. I mean, this is going to go
- 2:19Speaker 3: down as I and I don't know if you guys
- 2:22Speaker 3: have that as well. We're talking about it on the
- 2:25Speaker 3: network last night. In recent memory or in your lifetime,
- 2:29Speaker 3: have you ever seen the best player at his position
- 2:35Speaker 3: in the NHL or any sport that took a team
- 2:39Speaker 3: friendly deal like this that's that significant, Like this is
- 2:43Speaker 3: again twelve and a half million people like, and we
- 2:47Speaker 3: had some sound from him his interview after he's like, listen,
- 2:49Speaker 3: my family's not going to go hungry from this, which
- 2:52Speaker 3: is right. It's twelve and a half million for two
- 2:54Speaker 3: years plus this year. But he could have easily taken
- 2:58Speaker 3: twenty two, could have easily taken eighteen. Caprice offset the
- 3:02Speaker 3: market at seventeen. I thought he was going to take
- 3:05Speaker 3: it to your eighteen year. This is gonna go down
- 3:08Speaker 3: as one of the all time great moves by a
- 3:12Speaker 3: player just being selfless. If Stan Bowman TikTok TikTok, Stan Bowman,
- 3:18Speaker 3: you're on the clock now, can get him a cup
- 3:22Speaker 3: and give him the ability to win a cup because man,
- 3:25Speaker 3: while like it's I've never seen that. I don't know
- 3:29Speaker 3: if you guys have seen that. We can kind of
- 3:31Speaker 3: we kind of were comparing the Crosby the eight point seven.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You know, Crosby could have kind of left some money
- 3:36Speaker 3: on the table, but this is like significant, this is
- 3:39Speaker 3: this is like one hundred million left on the table,
- 3:42Speaker 3: number one. If he went long term and short term
- 3:44Speaker 3: he left probably twenty million on you know, so it's
- 3:48Speaker 3: like maybe ten. I mean he could have went, he
- 3:50Speaker 3: could have went twenty two. Yeah, ten a year. It's
- 3:55Speaker 3: it's significant. So but you know, we all take a
- 3:59Speaker 3: deep exhale. The prodigal sun stays in Edmonton, but the
- 4:03Speaker 3: pressure now mounce because it's winning the cup, my friends.
- 4:07Speaker 3: And if you don't win the cup, he's fucking out
- 4:10Speaker 3: of there. So I think big time for them.
- 4:14Speaker 1: To your point about it, you know, his family still
- 4:15Speaker 1: getting able to eat makes you think of two thousand
- 4:17Speaker 1: and four, Latreelle Spreeball famously declined a three year, twenty
- 4:21Speaker 1: one million dollar contract because quote, I have a family
- 4:23Speaker 1: to feed refuse to sign for minimum contract or five million,
- 4:26Speaker 1: seven million a year Sprady to get his money talented
- 4:29Speaker 1: to Jad's point, which is that the clock is now
- 4:32Speaker 1: ticking right three years and then McDavid's gone.
- 4:34Speaker 2: The Oilers now have a sense of urgency.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yes, TikTok TikTok is right.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Uh yeah, it's you got three years to win a
- 4:41Speaker 4: cup and if you don't, that might be it. That
- 4:44Speaker 4: could be, that could be. That could be the story
- 4:46Speaker 4: of Connie Mack in Edmonton. I'm I mean I heard
- 4:51Speaker 4: two years twenty five is like good for him, He's
- 4:53Speaker 4: getting twenty five million year, that's amazing.
- 4:55Speaker 2: And then thought he's getting half that unbelievable. I mean,
- 4:59Speaker 2: what can you even say.
- 4:59Speaker 4: I mean, he had all the leverage, he could ask
- 5:01Speaker 4: for anything, and Edmonton probably would have given it to him.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I mean, in study says you.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Got three years, I'll take less, build the team around
- 5:09Speaker 4: me that will finally bring this thing home.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And and as you see, I'm wearing my Royal Mayfair
- 5:16Speaker 3: hat from Edmonton.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Just wait till we get to support YouTube. Then everybody
- 5:20Speaker 2: else see that hat.
- 5:21Speaker 3: One of these days. But here's the other thing with that,
- 5:24Speaker 3: Like you look at you know, because it's three years.
- 5:26Speaker 3: He's got this year and then two years you get
- 5:28Speaker 3: two years from now and Bowman hasn't figured it out.
- 5:32Speaker 3: That's also like I'm thinking, like how selfless this is.
- 5:37Speaker 3: That's also a great team friendly deal to trade in
- 5:41Speaker 3: two years if you need to trade and Connor's left
- 5:44Speaker 3: it on the table, like hey, if we're not good
- 5:47Speaker 3: enough and I need to get moved, I can still
- 5:50Speaker 3: go to a contender. They can eat some money and
- 5:53Speaker 3: I still have the opportunity to go and win win
- 5:55Speaker 3: a cup and also sign with the team, and Edmonton
- 5:59Speaker 3: will have the ability to get a I mean just
- 6:02Speaker 3: a haul back. So it's it is one of the
- 6:07Speaker 3: well designed contracts I've seen by an agent and player
- 6:13Speaker 3: jud Moldover and Connor McDavid. The fact they thought of this,
- 6:17Speaker 3: I think is covers all the bases for Connor so
- 6:21Speaker 3: I mean, and for the Vans and oiler. So but
- 6:23Speaker 3: once again you said it, TikTok, TikTok goes the Stanley
- 6:28Speaker 3: Cup clock.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Before we get to what happened last night, we'll do
- 6:32Speaker 1: our predictions here around the league. So kick it off
- 6:35Speaker 1: first d D in the East. I have the Maple
- 6:37Speaker 1: Leafs winning the division you.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I concur I think the Maple Leafs have I'm gonna
- 6:42Speaker 3: go down a limb here and say, this is the
- 6:44Speaker 3: best Maple Leaf tea team in the last five years
- 6:49Speaker 3: on paper, fully depth wise, this is the best team
- 6:53Speaker 3: in the past five years, the Toronto Maypleafs.
- 6:55Speaker 2: What's your biggest reason for believing that they're heavy?
- 6:58Speaker 3: They're finally the team that Craig Berube wants for that system.
- 7:02Speaker 3: You got Dakota Joshua, you got Nick Whah. The back end,
- 7:06Speaker 3: which has had a lot of turnovers, stays the same.
- 7:09Speaker 3: You got two good goalies. I know there's a little
- 7:11Speaker 3: bit of injury problems with wool and Stilars, but Stolars
- 7:16Speaker 3: is the guy in the net and up front. Man,
- 7:19Speaker 3: I know Marner is gone. It's one hundred and two points,
- 7:21Speaker 3: but I think there might be a lower scoring team.
- 7:25Speaker 3: But they're gonna be very hard to play against. Matthew Nyes,
- 7:28Speaker 3: Dakota Joshua, you got a lot of heavy bodies on
- 7:33Speaker 3: this team, and they're not going to be pushed around.
- 7:35Speaker 3: They're built for the playoffs. So this is the to me,
- 7:39Speaker 3: the best team that gives them the best chance in
- 7:41Speaker 3: the past five years and I know we said it
- 7:42Speaker 3: all the time in Toronto and they're probably gonna shit
- 7:45Speaker 3: in my bowl of cereal or whatever we want to
- 7:47Speaker 3: call it. Whatever. Yeah, I just this is I'm having hope.
- 7:54Speaker 3: You got the Blue Jays playing some good ball.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go.
- 7:57Speaker 3: But it's Toronto. Come on, Canada, we need it, we
- 8:00Speaker 3: need something, we need it.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But Toronto and the Metropolitan vision that Hurricanes have finished
- 8:05Speaker 1: first or second in the Metro five consecutive years, They've
- 8:07Speaker 1: reached the playoffs seven straight seasons, and they sign nikolaike
- 8:10Speaker 1: Eelers to me, I got the Hurricanes in the met Yeah.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I think the Met's gonna be the worst division in hockey.
- 8:16Speaker 3: We saw that last night watching Rangers versus Penguins. I mean,
- 8:21Speaker 3: Penguins played a perfect road game, but that was some bad,
- 8:24Speaker 3: bad hockey.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Start for Mike Salvans team.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Oh tough start. I mean they all took ambient before
- 8:30Speaker 3: the game, sleeping or just you know, I don't want
- 8:33Speaker 3: to and it's only one game and it's the opener.
- 8:36Speaker 3: But you're at MSG opening night, Come on, give me something.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Piss the drop. Uh, but I'll go Hurricanes with you.
- 8:43Speaker 3: We're on the same page. I was kind of leading
- 8:45Speaker 3: the Capitals too, But.
- 8:49Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Now, I'm gonna stay Hurricanes. I think Hurricanes they're on
- 8:54Speaker 3: a mission.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Okay, perfect, I saw it.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Next week, go Central Winnipeg Jackson. They lose Nikolai Eelers.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But to me, you've still got hellabuck, You've still got
- 9:02Speaker 1: tons of star power Stifley Connor Moore.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I will go with the Winnipeg Jets. This is where
- 9:07Speaker 3: we did for my friend. The West is where Daddy eats,
- 9:10Speaker 3: and the West is where I live, and the West
- 9:12Speaker 3: is where I know the league. Uh not Winnipeg. Jonathan
- 9:17Speaker 3: Tave's already a little nicked up, missing Lowry, missing Purfetti,
- 9:22Speaker 3: got some injury troubles there. I don't know if they
- 9:25Speaker 3: can do it. They'll have a good year, they'll be
- 9:26Speaker 3: in the top three, but they will not be first.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I will give it to the team last night that
- 9:31Speaker 3: looked very stout, missing their top goalie, Mackenzie Blackwood. The
- 9:36Speaker 3: Colorado overlong, I'm gonna take it.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Adding your boy Brent Burns, some freegency and Brock Nelson.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yeah to the deadline, So beefing up that team and
- 9:46Speaker 1: the Pacific.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Vegas Vegas running away with it. Vegas by Vegas by
- 9:53Speaker 3: a landslide, All right, landslide.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Which gets us to the Thumpert which is the hot take,
- 9:58Speaker 1: the Jason de Murz hot tag, what is something you're
- 10:00Speaker 1: gonna put your name off?
- 10:01Speaker 2: Pe'all gonna look back of man has nailed it?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Uh Anaheim? Well I'll get two of them, Okay, Sure,
- 10:12Speaker 3: Anaheim Ducks will be in the top three in the Pacific.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I love it because you could have just said playoff team,
- 10:19Speaker 2: You're going top three?
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I think after watching last night and again it's early,
- 10:23Speaker 3: but I think the La Kings, I'm not sure forward
- 10:28Speaker 3: group fantastic. The decor I don't know can move the
- 10:32Speaker 3: puck well enough to those forwards. I think they will
- 10:35Speaker 3: struggle a bit. I know duml en CC, but I
- 10:39Speaker 3: just think they might might have a little bit of trouble.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I think they'll still get in. But I think it
- 10:44Speaker 3: is Anaheim Ducks. They're gonna surprise a lot of people.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Then my other hot take, which is Overreaction Central. But
- 10:51Speaker 3: Marty Nachius unrestricted for you wins the rocket Rashard.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Wow, unbelieved.
- 10:58Speaker 1: So Colorado trades ransom for Natus and now he's gonna win.
- 11:02Speaker 2: The Rocket scored.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Two last game, first game of the season, forty eight
- 11:07Speaker 3: away him and Justin Brazo clubhouse leaders for goals scored.
- 11:12Speaker 3: But I do believe that he is going to have
- 11:15Speaker 3: a big year. And you know, McKennon just seems to
- 11:19Speaker 3: find him. And the thing with Nate Dogg is if
- 11:23Speaker 3: he finds you and you score, you best believe you
- 11:26Speaker 3: getting that puck more and more so. He only gives
- 11:29Speaker 3: you a couple of chances, but if you score, he's
- 11:32Speaker 3: going to keep feeding you. Where's your hot take? We
- 11:37Speaker 3: need your hot take?
- 11:38Speaker 1: Well this could be listen the final month of an
- 11:39Speaker 1: h on the script. Who knows what the future could hold?
- 11:41Speaker 1: So I'm going to be for Canada. Okay, the top
- 11:44Speaker 1: three teams the Atlantic are all going to be Canadian. Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal,
- 11:49Speaker 1: Florida and Tampa Bay will both be wild cards.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Whoa Canada? Not as crazy as you might think.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Look at the point, No, no, no, I'm respecting Florida
- 11:58Speaker 1: regression obviously without Ka Chuck and Barkoff.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah, but did you watch him?
- 12:02Speaker 3: Did you watch him last game?
- 12:03Speaker 2: They listen?
- 12:04Speaker 3: Unbelievable. They still got one of the best teams in
- 12:06Speaker 3: the league missing Barkoff and kud Chuck.
- 12:09Speaker 1: But Monchwall could go back to back Calder winners if
- 12:12Speaker 1: Demodoff steps up the way I think he could.
- 12:14Speaker 2: They haven't done that. I mean, no teams that since
- 12:15Speaker 2: the Bruins in the late sixties leaves we agree on.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Now, I just need Ottawa, who should be really good
- 12:19Speaker 1: again playoff team.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Well, I mean, let's throw another one out there. I
- 12:23Speaker 3: don't think Demooff wins the Calder. I think it's I
- 12:25Speaker 3: think Michael Misa can steal it or Matthew Schaeffer because
- 12:29Speaker 3: they think Demooff is not going to have He's not
- 12:34Speaker 3: going to be playing top power play at least to start,
- 12:38Speaker 3: and that's a lot of his point totals. So I
- 12:41Speaker 3: think there's the doors open for another rookie, maybe Brady Martin,
- 12:45Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 12:46Speaker 1: According to betting odds right now, Demidoff is the favorite.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Tell what's your hot pick? You're fired up right now?
- 12:52Speaker 3: We got him excited the Moose Stash. The Moose Stash
- 12:57Speaker 3: was wiggling getting worked out.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Boys.
- 13:02Speaker 4: The season is finally here. It's a very exciting. Yeah, my,
- 13:06Speaker 4: we we've been talking about these the big one. I
- 13:08Speaker 4: like I like the Calgary Flames this season.
- 13:10Speaker 3: I think they're going to make the playoffs.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Wow, yeah, I'm taking it. I'm taking a swing.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I'm taking a swing here. But yeah, swing.
- 13:18Speaker 2: They've got the.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Goalie Morgan Frost had a fantastic preseason. I think they
- 13:22Speaker 4: got the the they signed their coach, your guy av
- 13:26Speaker 4: I I like like some I like coming in and
- 13:33Speaker 4: having a nice rookie season for them. I mean, I
- 13:36Speaker 4: think they looked like they could get it done. And
- 13:38Speaker 4: you mentioned Brady Martin j D.
- 13:40Speaker 3: I like him.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I mean he might not last.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Nine games, but he's been playing with like Ryan O'Reilly
- 13:45Speaker 4: and Philip Forstburg a bit in the preseason.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Clearly very scaled at eighteen years old.
- 13:49Speaker 3: He's a guy I'm looking out for for the the
- 13:51Speaker 3: Caulder this season. The the West is going to be
- 13:54Speaker 3: an absolute slog. You know, look at Nashville, Like Nashville
- 13:57Speaker 3: still has a great team. They bring in Nick Haig,
- 14:02Speaker 3: Hague Purbicks, like their decour is really really stout. Haigg's
- 14:06Speaker 3: hurt right now, but when he comes back, Uh, this
- 14:08Speaker 3: is a team that's like gonna have a little bite
- 14:11Speaker 3: to him. So it's gonna be tough. Like Minnesota is decent.
- 14:14Speaker 3: I have high hopes for Saint Louis. I think Utah's
- 14:19Speaker 3: I think Utah is gonna miss. Everybody's gonna get fired. Yeah,
- 14:24Speaker 3: I just think I I just don't like their team
- 14:26Speaker 3: makeup right now, and I just think it's it's gonna
- 14:29Speaker 3: be tough, sled and early there. I think Seattle is
- 14:32Speaker 3: gonna be horrid. I think Vancouver is not gonna be great.
- 14:38Speaker 3: So I have those three. I think Calgary, I don't
- 14:39Speaker 3: have Calgary anywhere near the playoffs, but I like that.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I like that pick. Though swing for defenses. I think
- 14:46Speaker 3: Dustin Wold progresses a bit sophomore slump. You know, goalies
- 14:51Speaker 3: aren't immune to it. It's when you have that good
- 14:53Speaker 3: of her first year. And you know my affinity and
- 14:57Speaker 3: my hatred for small goalies, I hate it. Give me
- 15:02Speaker 3: a big goalie any day, Give me a big Well.
- 15:05Speaker 1: We're recording before Wednesday Night's game, still to go over
- 15:07Speaker 1: an exciting opening night, as JD alluded to the Panthers,
- 15:10Speaker 1: they raised the banner beat the Blackhawks three two. Penguins
- 15:12Speaker 1: ruined their former coach Mike Salvin's first game as head coach.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Penguins beat the Rangers three nothing at MSG and then
- 15:18Speaker 1: with this one thoy sixteenth career point, Nathan McKinnon passes
- 15:21Speaker 1: Joe Sakkeek, the Avalanche's all time leading scorer, and a
- 15:25Speaker 1: four to one win. I don't think the Penguins or
- 15:28Speaker 1: the Rangers or playoff teams, But how about Mike Salvin's debut.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Didn't guys advertise on MSG?
- 15:33Speaker 3: Well, they're I mean, I don't know what that pregame
- 15:36Speaker 3: speech was, but they came out flat. They were flat
- 15:41Speaker 3: all game. I just they just looked disjointed, and uh, Pittsburgh,
- 15:45Speaker 3: I mean credit to Pittsburgh. Those young guys that came in,
- 15:49Speaker 3: Uh Brunick, Harrison Brunick on defense, great little player, and
- 15:55Speaker 3: then everybody was super high. And I wanted to watch
- 15:58Speaker 3: this Ben Kendall and this guy was poised, young kid like,
- 16:02Speaker 3: you know, playing on the biggest stage. And these guys
- 16:05Speaker 3: just played a perfect road game. And listen, I I
- 16:09Speaker 3: think you could say that Rangers were flat and they
- 16:13Speaker 3: looked they didn't look good. But I just thought they
- 16:15Speaker 3: got outclassed in every spot on the ice. Dan muse
- 16:19Speaker 3: is preached staying connected is their theme all camping, and
- 16:24Speaker 3: I think that's something that was done to perfection in
- 16:27Speaker 3: this game, and you can't ask as a coach. You're
- 16:30Speaker 3: going back in that locker room. You're sitting down and
- 16:32Speaker 3: you as you were as hard as a rock at
- 16:35Speaker 3: the perfection that game was. From goaltending to Archer Sea Lofts.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Coming over from the trade from Vancouver.
- 16:43Speaker 1: You're like, wait, Archer Sea Lofts, A former number three
- 16:45Speaker 1: goalie low Is one of the playoffs, is now shutting
- 16:47Speaker 1: down the Rangers on Broadway.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I love it, love for Archers.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Do you want a funny story?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Sure?
- 16:53Speaker 3: I credit his success to myself. The last, the last
- 17:00Speaker 3: shot on net I had in my professional career was
- 17:03Speaker 3: on arch Your Sea Lofts. We were down one in
- 17:06Speaker 3: the Calder Cup playoffs, facing elimination in the opening round.
- 17:12Speaker 3: One of our one of my teammates, Mark uh Nima Linen,
- 17:16Speaker 3: just obliterates somebody by their bench. Now everybody there's a
- 17:20Speaker 3: huge brewj hob. But the puck's still there. Puck goes
- 17:23Speaker 3: to the corner. One of the guys in her team goes,
- 17:26Speaker 3: I'm gonna go get the puck. I sneak down all alone,
- 17:30Speaker 3: all alone, and the dying embers, the burning embers of
- 17:33Speaker 3: the game in Abbotsford in one of the shittiest rooms,
- 17:37Speaker 3: people yelling, oh just craziness, places going bananas. I get
- 17:44Speaker 3: the pass in the slot, I go. This is painted
- 17:47Speaker 3: archer Sea lofts, a young archer Sea lofts and net
- 17:50Speaker 3: slides stays compact. I try to go A little blocker
- 17:53Speaker 3: makes the save my hopes of continuing my career cast
- 17:58Speaker 3: asunder retirement, Yes.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Under crying, Yes, I love it, se love's oss, gretit JD.
- 18:06Speaker 1: That's saved, gave him the If I can stop Jason
- 18:08Speaker 1: de Murz, maybe one day I can shut down the
- 18:10Speaker 1: Rangers on. Speaking of crazy stats, you mentioned the fact
- 18:13Speaker 1: that you know McDavid taking less money. How about this
- 18:15Speaker 1: Malkin Crosby Latang first trio in the four major North
- 18:19Speaker 1: American men's professional sports leagues to play twenty seasons together
- 18:23Speaker 1: with the same team. That is a record that will
- 18:25Speaker 1: never be broken in salary cap era.
- 18:27Speaker 2: That's insane.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's I want to know if they actually like
- 18:30Speaker 3: each other in twenty years, Like do you still hang
- 18:33Speaker 3: because you know it's it happens in sports, Like you'll
- 18:35Speaker 3: play with somebody. I played with guys for six years.
- 18:38Speaker 3: I'd never stepped inside their house, and I played and
- 18:41Speaker 3: trained with guys in the NHL for six years market
- 18:44Speaker 3: door Vlassek, And I mean, I think we maybe if
- 18:48Speaker 3: we pass each other in the street, we might not
- 18:49Speaker 3: recognize each other. Great guy, I love them, but just
- 18:52Speaker 3: like one of those things in sports, once the season's over,
- 18:55Speaker 3: you go your separate ways, you go your own way,
- 18:59Speaker 3: And I think it'd be interesting to see. But I mean, what,
- 19:04Speaker 3: you know, Crosby, you see a.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Guy so much twenty years, Like, listen, what more do
- 19:07Speaker 1: I need? Like maybe you know Gino's just like how
- 19:09Speaker 1: much more said to I need in my life?
- 19:11Speaker 3: Like we're good, yeah, please leave me alone. Exactly it's
- 19:14Speaker 3: ten months here. But I mean, though you know Crosby's
- 19:16Speaker 3: been it's just amazing and astounding at how long they've
- 19:20Speaker 3: been kind of the face of the league, Crosby, Malkin,
- 19:22Speaker 3: and they've carried the league with Ovechkin as well, and uh,
- 19:26Speaker 3: they just you know, Malkin doesn't get enough credit for
- 19:29Speaker 3: how great of a career he had. You know, he's
- 19:31Speaker 3: always kind of been a little bit chattowed by Crosby.
- 19:33Speaker 3: But and then you put Lttang in there as a defenseman,
- 19:36Speaker 3: and what he's overcame. And I mean, these are these
- 19:38Speaker 3: guys won cops together. I mean, this is a it's
- 19:41Speaker 3: gonna be a sad day when these guys leave you.
- 19:43Speaker 3: You kind of already seen the changing of the guard,
- 19:46Speaker 3: you know, co Patars last season, Crosby malkin Ov, you know,
- 19:51Speaker 3: Brent Burns. Like this is like the final little slog.
- 19:56Speaker 3: This is the final group of guys that are going
- 19:58Speaker 3: out and then it's the you know, then it's gonna
- 20:01Speaker 3: be the McKinnon's in, the McDavid's turn. You know, that's
- 20:03Speaker 3: like they've they've already been the face thing with these
- 20:05Speaker 3: older guys. This is kind of dowdy. It's kind of
- 20:08Speaker 3: the end of the road. So you know, it's uh,
- 20:10Speaker 3: it's it's it's very nostalgic.
- 20:12Speaker 1: The last of the Mohicans, so to speak. And speaking
- 20:15Speaker 1: of youngs.
- 20:16Speaker 3: What a fucking movie that is.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Oh, daniel lewis unbelievable.
- 20:21Speaker 3: I love Last Wens. I have that a VHS.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Stay alive no matter what happens.
- 20:25Speaker 1: I will find Yeah, hot guy, Matty Ice has arrived.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Your boy, Matthew Schaeffer with the Andanders of the Age
- 20:31Speaker 1: of eighteen. Think about this list JD of Young defenseman
- 20:34Speaker 1: Phil Housley, Scott stevens.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Ally of Freddie Let's go how about that slap shot?
- 20:39Speaker 1: Jacob Chickrin, as well as Rasmus Dalli and aaronek Blad,
- 20:41Speaker 1: Roman Hammerleck and Gord Kluzak, who likes Shaeffer Wall taking
- 20:46Speaker 1: first overall level of surprise that Schaeffer starts to the
- 20:49Speaker 1: big club.
- 20:49Speaker 2: You thought maybe the miners for a little bit or.
- 20:52Speaker 3: No, He's he's ready to go twenty minutes a night.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Here you come, Matthew, Matthiu Shaefer on Long Island, all
- 21:01Speaker 3: that trash on Long Island. He's gonna have him self
- 21:04Speaker 3: an absolute season. I think he's going to be good.
- 21:08Speaker 3: This is he's gonna learn some stuff. But this is
- 21:11Speaker 3: a kid that is very intelligent, very emotionally intelligent. I
- 21:15Speaker 3: think so many people are rooting for him, and I
- 21:19Speaker 3: just believe he's gonna, you know, he's going to be
- 21:22Speaker 3: a huge focal point of this this team for a
- 21:24Speaker 3: long time. So congrats to Matthew Schaeffer. A lot of
- 21:28Speaker 3: a lot of debuts this year, a lot of you
- 21:30Speaker 3: see the you see the youth coming up here. I
- 21:33Speaker 3: think this was there's five of the first round picks
- 21:37Speaker 3: are debuting this season. I think it's the first time
- 21:41Speaker 3: since twenty sixteen that's happened five first round picks, So
- 21:45Speaker 3: best draft class in the past nine years.
- 21:49Speaker 1: We'll see youth has served. I guess we'll see these
- 21:52Speaker 1: teams looking one more top before we get to the
- 21:55Speaker 1: great Chris Berman. And this is great headline by tal
- 21:59Speaker 1: the Florida Project, with a nod to Shaun Baker.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Interstate beef started Thursday.
- 22:03Speaker 1: AJ Green the Panthers SI's a cheap shot at Brandon Hagel.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Greer gets a fine. Two nights later, the Lightning call
- 22:08Speaker 1: up six players from the HL team for the rematch.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Scott Savroni is nineteen seconds goes after.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Aaron ak Plad four game suspension, JJ Moser two game suspension.
- 22:18Speaker 2: The two teams.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Combined for three hundred and twenty two penalty minutes. The
- 22:21Speaker 1: NHL find the Lightning one hundred game rand and their
- 22:24Speaker 1: head coach John Coper twenty five thousand dollars. At one point,
- 22:27Speaker 1: Timpa Bay had three players in their bench, leading Coop
- 22:30Speaker 1: to say, I think we had more coaches than players
- 22:32Speaker 1: in the bench.
- 22:33Speaker 2: At one point, Florida dominated tamp on the first run.
- 22:35Speaker 1: In the past two seasons, they don't play a real
- 22:37Speaker 1: game until November fifteenth.
- 22:39Speaker 2: How good is this rivalry?
- 22:41Speaker 3: It's it's the rivalry.
- 22:43Speaker 1: No, I don't know what would top it, right, Yeah,
- 22:46Speaker 1: it's not what it once was. And there was a
- 22:47Speaker 1: bad blood. These guys hate each other.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I mean, you could argue the Canadians and Capitals that series,
- 22:53Speaker 3: but this is this is another level. This is hatred.
- 22:56Speaker 3: So I heard from inside the inside the belly of
- 23:00Speaker 3: the Beast that these guys. So after that game was
- 23:04Speaker 3: like the final cuts, and Tampa goes on like a
- 23:09Speaker 3: team bonding trip and they brought all of those guys
- 23:12Speaker 3: that would have been cut. They all the players banded
- 23:16Speaker 3: together and said, hey, these guys are coming with us
- 23:19Speaker 3: on this trip because of what they did standing up
- 23:21Speaker 3: for us, the Saburins and all that. And Julian Breesebaugh
- 23:24Speaker 3: said done. So they brought all these guys, so like
- 23:27Speaker 3: this is this is like this runs deep, Like you're
- 23:31Speaker 3: coming to that team and you have that hatred. I
- 23:33Speaker 3: mean I was in Florida for the year and I
- 23:35Speaker 3: mean there you got to think in terms of like
- 23:39Speaker 3: what other place closeness, you know, you have the Rangers,
- 23:41Speaker 3: the Islanders, and the Devils, and you know, you have
- 23:44Speaker 3: the Devil, probably Devil's. I'd probably see Devil's Rangers. But
- 23:47Speaker 3: when you're that close to another team, and I mean
- 23:50Speaker 3: there's only two teams in the state, and you're, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 3: right across the pond, so to speak, the Everglades, the swamp,
- 23:56Speaker 3: the shit soup, and you get through Alligator Alley and
- 24:01Speaker 3: you just got this other team on the other side.
- 24:03Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, the most important thing is both things
- 24:07Speaker 1: have to be great. Like for years, you know, people
- 24:08Speaker 1: would say Yankees red Sox and Michael the Yankees kick
- 24:10Speaker 1: their ass, is not.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Really a rivalry. And you're what I said, the approximity
- 24:13Speaker 2: said big.
- 24:13Speaker 1: You could legitimately see Tampa Bay finally beating Florida this
- 24:17Speaker 1: year the playoffs, or you can see Florida beating for
- 24:18Speaker 1: the third trade time.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Who do I man, I don't know. I the hot
- 24:22Speaker 3: take soup is I keep saying soup. I don't know why.
- 24:26Speaker 3: I must be hungry but rainy. Here's a little cold.
- 24:29Speaker 3: It's a little cold. Warm up the yeah, warm up
- 24:31Speaker 3: the bones. I don't know why I say that. Come on, Jay,
- 24:33Speaker 3: just expand your vernacular, Jay Jez.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Speaking of vernacular, he could go all the way. We're
- 24:41Speaker 1: going one on one with Chris Berman, the ESPN legend.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Right after this, our next guest, the broadcasting icon. He
- 24:59Speaker 1: started his career with the ESPN in nineteen seventy nine
- 25:01Speaker 1: remains an institution at the worldwide leader to the day.
- 25:04Speaker 1: He has anchored coverage of everything from the NFL to
- 25:06Speaker 1: the NHL, to golf to baseball, and his signature enthusiasm, catchphases,
- 25:11Speaker 1: and creative nicknames helped the revolutionize sports broadcasting. The one,
- 25:14Speaker 1: the only Chris Berman boomer and it's great to see
- 25:16Speaker 1: you again, my friend.
- 25:18Speaker 5: Well you got my check, Thanks chaving that. Thanks for
- 25:20Speaker 5: the nice intro. I should have a nickname for you.
- 25:22Speaker 5: I don't know if I ever did. Burke. Yeah, I
- 25:24Speaker 5: don't think I had a home run for you, so
- 25:26Speaker 5: I didn't. I'll work on it while we talk.
- 25:29Speaker 1: So nine years of ESPN twenty ten to twenty nineteen,
- 25:31Speaker 1: and the one question I always get ask on somebody said,
- 25:33Speaker 1: you work at the ESPN. G Ever meet Chris Berman
- 25:35Speaker 1: twenty thirteen World Series Red Sox Cardinals. Mike McQuaid of course,
- 25:39Speaker 1: overseeing things a lot of a lot of nicknames for
- 25:41Speaker 1: Q over the over the years.
- 25:42Speaker 2: He goes, hey, he goes, you're riding with Boomer. I said,
- 25:45Speaker 2: are you kidding yours? Yeah, Chris Berman's here, I said.
- 25:47Speaker 2: He goes, hey, don't I know you're very enthusiastic.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I'm sure you're a big fani. It's just leave alone.
- 25:51Speaker 1: R It's an early morning and no problem. So we
- 25:52Speaker 1: get the car Shure cans and I couldn't help myself.
- 25:55Speaker 1: I just started to asking you a questions. I got, Boom,
- 25:56Speaker 1: how did you be such a big CFL guy? You
- 25:58Speaker 1: know BK And he goes, oh, Bob accles BC lines.
- 26:01Speaker 1: You start telling me the whole story, Greg say, I said, bull,
- 26:02Speaker 1: it means so much to us when you do great
- 26:04Speaker 1: cup highlights on countdown on prime Time. I said to
- 26:07Speaker 1: Tony Corny, I just said, on peat tag was waving
- 26:09Speaker 1: a Canadian flag.
- 26:10Speaker 2: You guys go nuts for that kind of stuff.
- 26:12Speaker 1: We start talking about our friend John Sonders, of course,
- 26:14Speaker 1: the late great John Saunders. And then I said, Boom,
- 26:16Speaker 1: I gotta ask you for some of these nicknames.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, I go. Can I tell you my favorite one?
- 26:19Speaker 5: You go sure? I said.
- 26:21Speaker 1: It was on the NHL Highlight. You said, ron cough
- 26:24Speaker 1: please tug nut. You said, well with Disney.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Now I can't see these things as much as I
- 26:30Speaker 2: used to. I go fair enough. We get out of
- 26:32Speaker 2: the car, and I said, I asked him for a picture.
- 26:33Speaker 2: I gots a little embarrassing for collegues, like I know,
- 26:35Speaker 2: I got to I got boom. I'm sorry. I just
- 26:36Speaker 2: got one picture, of course, and.
- 26:38Speaker 1: You put your arm on me to go hey on
- 26:39Speaker 1: the count of three, one, two, three.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Ay, Well, well, uh, I like I like that. The
- 26:48Speaker 5: folks shop in Canada have liked me, and the and
- 26:51Speaker 5: the reason is and I appreciate it a or yeah.
- 26:54Speaker 5: I could go on and on and on, but it
- 26:56Speaker 5: said with love, you know that. And of course John,
- 26:59Speaker 5: God bless him, and my got a nine years for John,
- 27:03Speaker 5: by the way, passed. I want to say twenty sixteen.
- 27:08Speaker 5: But the thing for TSN picked up NFL primetime right
- 27:16Speaker 5: out of the gates. Okay, maybe not eighty seven, but
- 27:19Speaker 5: but I think SO didn't pick up I don't think
- 27:24Speaker 5: they had our morning show, which was then game Day
- 27:26Speaker 5: and not count out. They might have, but you know,
- 27:29Speaker 5: TSM was doing their own sports center spelled differently like
- 27:34Speaker 5: offenses and defense are spelled differently, you know, offense. But
- 27:40Speaker 5: I believe so in Canada, even late eighties, I was
- 27:46Speaker 5: seen and of course NFL primetime, not because I did it,
- 27:49Speaker 5: believe me. But you had to watch it if you
- 27:52Speaker 5: liked NFL football, I mean you you had to. And
- 27:56Speaker 5: so I would be surprised early nineties, for example, Blue
- 28:01Speaker 5: Jays World Series, okay two of them, and I would
- 28:07Speaker 5: be surprised that how many people knew me early nineties
- 28:12Speaker 5: in Canada, not Americans, you know around going to a
- 28:15Speaker 5: World Series game from Atlanta or you know whatever, but Philly.
- 28:20Speaker 5: But and I knew it was because of prime time.
- 28:24Speaker 5: It was because TSN picked it up. And then also
- 28:27Speaker 5: the Gray Cup highlights. And the background of that is
- 28:32Speaker 5: in the eighties if Bob Ackels wasn't friend obviously, but
- 28:36Speaker 5: in the eighties when we didn't have a lot, I
- 28:39Speaker 5: mean early eighties we had legitimate stuff, but it wasn't
- 28:42Speaker 5: Super Bowl, right, and then we had the CFL Games
- 28:46Speaker 5: of the Week two a week. And in the early
- 28:49Speaker 5: eighties there was Edmonton in the snow wearing uniforms looking
- 28:55Speaker 5: like the Green Bay Packers, with Warren Moon at quarterback
- 28:59Speaker 5: and Warren Moon in the same age as me. Bowl
- 29:06Speaker 5: we watched the CFL games and enjoyed them, and I
- 29:10Speaker 5: enjoyed the differences of them. And I didn't get all
- 29:12Speaker 5: the nuances obviously right away. I mean dead three downs,
- 29:15Speaker 5: I got it. And when they say go long in
- 29:18Speaker 5: the CFL, it's no, you go long right, like keep
- 29:21Speaker 5: going and like if you're playing in Hamilton, you know,
- 29:26Speaker 5: try to get the wins right. So so so was
- 29:31Speaker 5: the CFL. And of course my friend John Saunders and
- 29:35Speaker 5: always being a hockey fan, but the TSN picked us up.
- 29:40Speaker 5: That was a big part of it.
- 29:41Speaker 3: To be honest with you, Boomer, I grew up listening
- 29:46Speaker 3: to you. You put me to sleep so many nights,
- 29:48Speaker 3: your highlights, And I just want to talk about those
- 29:50Speaker 3: early days at ESPN and now that espens this global
- 29:54Speaker 3: broadcasting giant. But how is it different in the early
- 29:57Speaker 3: days the wild West of sports? And how did you
- 30:01Speaker 3: find those early days compared to now?
- 30:04Speaker 5: Well, I mean there's no comparison. Of course, I started
- 30:07Speaker 5: at twenty four. We were one month in. I mean
- 30:10Speaker 5: we were rebels without a clue, is what I like
- 30:12Speaker 5: to say. And they're like seventy or eighty of us.
- 30:15Speaker 5: I mean total, I don't mean to put I mean
- 30:18Speaker 5: the two people selling an ad, which was Budweiser and
- 30:22Speaker 5: whatever the hell else, you know, the two people programming us.
- 30:28Speaker 5: There'd be more than two, but not much more than four.
- 30:31Speaker 5: You get the point. Everybody knew everybody. Most of us
- 30:35Speaker 5: were young, of course, not all management, but most of
- 30:37Speaker 5: us were twenties and thirties. And it was, as I
- 30:42Speaker 5: look back at it, as far as the camaraderie, you
- 30:46Speaker 5: can't duplicate it, not because all we're too big now, No, no,
- 30:51Speaker 5: eighties and nineties. At the very beginning, we didn't know
- 30:53Speaker 5: we'd make it, but a lot of us didn't care.
- 30:55Speaker 5: Of course we cared, but are we going to be
- 30:58Speaker 5: here two or three years?
- 30:59Speaker 1: Here?
- 30:59Speaker 5: We're having a blast doing it. We're doing sports all
- 31:01Speaker 5: the time. Now. Admittedly some of the sports weren't what
- 31:05Speaker 5: you would think, but we were on Sports Center covering
- 31:09Speaker 5: all of them. And we didn't have to have the
- 31:12Speaker 5: rights to the NFL or MLB or NHL or although
- 31:15Speaker 5: we did have hockey and you know college who we
- 31:19Speaker 5: we reported all of them and rather than do for
- 31:22Speaker 5: me the three and you know, three minutes at six
- 31:26Speaker 5: and three at eleven, you're doing thirty minutes every night,
- 31:31Speaker 5: which is you're died and going to heaven. Frankly, now,
- 31:35Speaker 5: I mean compared to then and now, a lot of
- 31:37Speaker 5: it is the technology, but look, we were young. The
- 31:43Speaker 5: best thing is if we do it interviews from the
- 31:45Speaker 5: super Bowl early on, for example, we go to media
- 31:49Speaker 5: day on Tuesday and send the tapes three quarter a inch.
- 31:57Speaker 5: We go to the airport, put them on a plane.
- 32:00Speaker 5: If the plane landed in Hartford, we had stuff on
- 32:05Speaker 5: fresh for the two thirty. If not, you had it tomorrow. Okay,
- 32:11Speaker 5: but that's what we did. We didn't have trucks, we
- 32:14Speaker 5: didn't have I mean, we didn't send up stuff. This
- 32:16Speaker 5: is my end of it. And so to compare that
- 32:19Speaker 5: to no is unbelievable. But here's the same. Everybody in
- 32:24Speaker 5: the building was into it and maybe and you guys
- 32:29Speaker 5: are working at places that I'm sure are very similar
- 32:31Speaker 5: or were. Therefore they are one person doing four jobs,
- 32:36Speaker 5: not four doing one. We didn't have enough time to complain.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Yeah we complained, of course, but but we had stuff
- 32:45Speaker 5: to do and it was a great Without us knowing,
- 32:48Speaker 5: it taught us an unbelievable work ethic. I don't know
- 32:51Speaker 5: what to do about that. Yeah, but you're the only
- 32:53Speaker 5: one that could do so do something. And everybody was
- 32:57Speaker 5: the same. And I mean I could go on and
- 32:59Speaker 5: on and on, and I these folks are friends till now,
- 33:02Speaker 5: and unlike a COmON when you've been together four years
- 33:08Speaker 5: and then you're all off. We got to know each
- 33:12Speaker 5: other's girlfriend's wives, maybe little babies. So when we see
- 33:16Speaker 5: people that haven't been in the building for twenty thirty years,
- 33:20Speaker 5: we remember their wife or girl, you know, because we
- 33:23Speaker 5: were together in our twenties and early thirties, so it's
- 33:27Speaker 5: a different reunion. We were grown ups, not kids, and
- 33:31Speaker 5: so from the personal standpoint, I wouldn't trade a thing.
- 33:34Speaker 5: It was great. Now, the fact that they're stupid enough
- 33:38Speaker 5: to have me here at seventy when I was twenty
- 33:40Speaker 5: four and I'm still on, that's their problem.
- 33:43Speaker 1: I remember, by the way, they did like a farewell
- 33:45Speaker 1: to boot when you were leaving Countdown and you said
- 33:47Speaker 1: to me, and you told Bevin Pell, I'm.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Not going anywhere.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Like I appreciate that tribute, but like I'm still doing
- 33:53Speaker 1: the show. Me and Booger are gonna do shows. I'm
- 33:54Speaker 1: not going like you're not getting rid of me.
- 33:55Speaker 2: And it's one of the things.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I tell people about Chris burb And I said, listen,
- 33:59Speaker 1: don't get it confused. You look at the play on words,
- 34:01Speaker 1: levity and the sense of humor and the camaraderie. But
- 34:04Speaker 1: I said, this guy genuinely loves sports, period. And one
- 34:07Speaker 1: thing that you taught me was that no matter what
- 34:09Speaker 1: you do, if you deal with full enthusiasman love for forever.
- 34:12Speaker 1: You said to me before we even got on here,
- 34:14Speaker 1: how much you loved baseball. You've been a huge baseball guy.
- 34:16Speaker 1: You didn't expect to be well the face of the NFL. Right,
- 34:19Speaker 1: if there was a different career path, Chris Permer would
- 34:21Speaker 1: be the voice of the San Francisco Giants.
- 34:24Speaker 5: True, Well, I you know, I don't love someone as
- 34:30Speaker 5: or you. You guys, why is somebody one? Why somebody
- 34:33Speaker 5: lost in a game, even if it's stuff. I don't
- 34:35Speaker 5: know that much about our teams. I don't know that
- 34:37Speaker 5: much about it. I'm interested just and not he's he
- 34:40Speaker 5: was great, he's stumped. Not that simple like sometimes it's different.
- 34:44Speaker 5: But here's I'm sure what I told you. When you're
- 34:46Speaker 5: an upbeat, you know, energetic person. Bobb Lee, for example,
- 34:50Speaker 5: is not. Bobby Lee is one of the best professionals
- 34:53Speaker 5: we've ever had or I've ever met. And forget our
- 34:55Speaker 5: network anywhere. Be yourself because if you're on every night,
- 35:00Speaker 5: you can be on on the weekends. And I'm not
- 35:02Speaker 5: implying that the network we're on on the weekends that
- 35:05Speaker 5: they're acting. But if you're doing a show every night,
- 35:08Speaker 5: whether it's NHL, MLB Sports Center, whatever it is, people
- 35:12Speaker 5: will see through that's not really who he is. He's
- 35:15Speaker 5: trying to make his voice a little more authoritative. Look,
- 35:18Speaker 5: my voice is just north of Rod Stewart in the rasp. Okay,
- 35:23Speaker 5: so I wish I could sing like him. But the
- 35:29Speaker 5: point is be yourself, and if you're excited about sports,
- 35:33Speaker 5: go ahead. However, give us the facts first before you
- 35:37Speaker 5: give us the nicknames. Or he could go all the way,
- 35:40Speaker 5: because otherwise you try to be noticed if that's part
- 35:44Speaker 5: of your persona and you're upbeat at that and you're
- 35:47Speaker 5: into it, and sometimes you and I both go a
- 35:50Speaker 5: little high on not only tone, but okay, tamp it
- 35:53Speaker 5: a little. Yeah, that's fair, but it's also bora also
- 35:58Speaker 5: being ourselves and anybody that we're not good enough to
- 36:03Speaker 5: be actors actresses, is what I would say. We might
- 36:07Speaker 5: as well do what the hell we do. So we're doing.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Yeah, Well that so well said about authenticity and I
- 36:13Speaker 3: feel you you said earlier like, oh why am I
- 36:15Speaker 3: still around at this time? Well, it's because you're authentic,
- 36:17Speaker 3: and I feel like it's come full circle in the
- 36:20Speaker 3: broadcasting world. That was a little button up and now
- 36:22Speaker 3: it's kind of getting back to being yourself. And you
- 36:25Speaker 3: mentioned something also about you know, you covered all sports.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Is there a sport that people wouldn't know that you know,
- 36:32Speaker 3: boomers are a big fan of that you still follow
- 36:35Speaker 3: today because of those early days of ESPN.
- 36:39Speaker 5: Well, oh, because of ESPN. Now, most of it was
- 36:42Speaker 5: rooted in me a long time before, but they wouldn't
- 36:45Speaker 5: know other than some Sports Center stuff if I loved it.
- 36:48Speaker 5: So I used to do a lot of baseball games.
- 36:50Speaker 5: I don't Canada, you didn't see it. Not that I
- 36:52Speaker 5: was great at it, but I did four hundred, which
- 36:55Speaker 5: if you're the voice of the Blue Jays or were
- 36:59Speaker 5: the voice of the exposing.
- 37:00Speaker 3: Oh God, Todd, give me some expost Montreal boy here.
- 37:05Speaker 5: I enjoyed. I I club when I did a rare
- 37:08Speaker 5: game of Montreal. I would I would do the home
- 37:10Speaker 5: run in French? Uh you know we uh you know
- 37:17Speaker 5: when I do the Gray Cup and to prevent that
- 37:19Speaker 5: likes because I French. But that's the other hit or
- 37:23Speaker 5: there so. But if you're a local announcer, you do
- 37:26Speaker 5: one hundred and sixty games a year anyway, a national guy,
- 37:29Speaker 5: I did four hundred, which doesn't make me great at it,
- 37:32Speaker 5: but it makes me I did it. So if you
- 37:35Speaker 5: were in the States, you knew I love baseball, even
- 37:38Speaker 5: though I don't really do it now. Football speaks for itself.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Hockey is one that you might that unless you saw
- 37:49Speaker 5: me on Sports Center. There were a few years John
- 37:52Speaker 5: and Barry Melrose and why don't you come do the
- 37:56Speaker 5: Stanley Cup finals with us on the road? I did
- 37:59Speaker 5: a few and there was a blast, but I was,
- 38:02Speaker 5: you know, I was just a third wheel. I wouldn't
- 38:04Speaker 5: try to take it over. My god. I mean, they
- 38:07Speaker 5: forgot more hockey than I'll ever know, but NHL, but
- 38:10Speaker 5: that was going young. Like I I was a hockey
- 38:14Speaker 5: fan at seven or eight. I grew up on the
- 38:19Speaker 5: Connecticut New York line, so in other words, we're about
- 38:22Speaker 5: an hour out of New York. I can tell you
- 38:24Speaker 5: that I've been to six seven games at the Old Garden.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Not many of you got it. Your I'm seventy year
- 38:30Speaker 5: a little younger than me, you can't say, including one
- 38:33Speaker 5: playoff game and the Rangers like never made it. So
- 38:36Speaker 5: I went to one. You know, the New Garden was
- 38:39Speaker 5: sixty seven or sixty eight, whatever the hell it was.
- 38:41Speaker 5: And all right, now true, I'm not trying to pander
- 38:44Speaker 5: to a Canadian audience. But Boster Hewitt Maple Leafs bombed
- 38:52Speaker 5: in on the radio, bombed in. It was in the
- 38:56Speaker 5: seven hundreds or upper six hundreds or seven thirty or seven,
- 39:01Speaker 5: I couldn't tell you, but he bombed in. And when
- 39:05Speaker 5: I was a little kid, the make beliefs are Wooding,
- 39:08Speaker 5: Stanley Concert, Dave Kean and Frank Mahovlich. And you can
- 39:13Speaker 5: also get not as strong the French. I didn't speak
- 39:16Speaker 5: French when I was ten, and even if you did,
- 39:19Speaker 5: you kind of had to figure it out, you know,
- 39:21Speaker 5: La Rondel rather than somebody that sixty All right, my god,
- 39:29Speaker 5: he's all over the ice. Yeah, no kidding, but but
- 39:33Speaker 5: so they bombed in. I remember sending away as a
- 39:37Speaker 5: kid for a Maple Leafs yearbook and Dave Keon was
- 39:40Speaker 5: on the cover, you know, and and and in sixty four,
- 39:44Speaker 5: sixty five, sixty six, whatever it was. So there are
- 39:48Speaker 5: only six teams then. So I like hockey and still do.
- 39:54Speaker 5: I don't keep up regular season. I look at standings.
- 39:57Speaker 5: I try to go to a few games a year,
- 40:02Speaker 5: but come playoffs, I mean, I'm right there, I'm not
- 40:05Speaker 5: going to be able to ex and ow it. Last year.
- 40:08Speaker 5: One of my tell I never saw Sydney Crossby play
- 40:10Speaker 5: live until last year that they played one game maybe
- 40:14Speaker 5: it was two, but one at Boston, and I went,
- 40:16Speaker 5: I'm going it might be his last year. Thank god
- 40:18Speaker 5: it's not. I love it. He's my modern day and
- 40:22Speaker 5: this is unheard of in Canada. I have a confession
- 40:25Speaker 5: to make. So I started maple leafs and still have
- 40:30Speaker 5: a soft spot for them, because how could you not.
- 40:32Speaker 5: I mean, it's like the ball, except they don't get
- 40:35Speaker 5: to the super Bowl. So I mean, well, in the
- 40:39Speaker 5: sixties they were great. I think they're great now. Yeah,
- 40:41Speaker 5: now we're Bob Bond, punch him black behind the bench.
- 40:45Speaker 5: Where do you want me to go? Carl Brewer? I
- 40:47Speaker 5: could you know? I could keep going. But in the
- 40:52Speaker 5: seventies and I went to Ranger games because they were
- 40:57Speaker 5: what we could go to a dad. I became a
- 41:03Speaker 5: huge fan, and in Canada you can't do this, So
- 41:07Speaker 5: as your regret. Actually for Toronto, I'm maya Colpa. I
- 41:12Speaker 5: fell in love with the Gala Flair Canadians. Okay, yeah,
- 41:16Speaker 5: let's kind of know it. Everybody can see that. Yeah,
- 41:22Speaker 5: they I just enjoyed watching them play. And I was
- 41:26Speaker 5: in college in New England, and boy, them playing the
- 41:29Speaker 5: Bruins was awesome and I got a little kick out
- 41:34Speaker 5: of quietly seeing Bruins fans suffer when Ken driving. God
- 41:37Speaker 5: bless him and we'll talk about him in a minute.
- 41:40Speaker 5: You'll kicked out all that. Well, that was seventy one
- 41:43Speaker 5: I was in high school. But the gal of Flair Canadians,
- 41:47Speaker 5: if you had to pick one team now that I
- 41:49Speaker 5: still root for the most, it's not sure all but
- 41:52Speaker 5: Toronto's not far behind, which I know is impossible. So
- 41:55Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 41:56Speaker 2: It's like for Red Sox and the Aches Boom. Somehow
- 41:58Speaker 2: you can right now.
- 42:00Speaker 5: Because in the States I can root for both. They
- 42:02Speaker 5: don't get that there's a problem, you know what I mean.
- 42:06Speaker 5: And Van Oober looked like Darth Vaders. So I liked
- 42:09Speaker 5: him for a while too.
- 42:10Speaker 2: You know, hundred percent you mentioned Ken Dryden.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Seventies goalies. Bernie Parant recently passed me. I remember the
- 42:16Speaker 1: great sign. Only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parant
- 42:19Speaker 1: seventy four, seventy five all time. Grady carried that Flyers team.
- 42:23Speaker 1: We think of the broad Street Bullies. But Bernie was unbelievable,
- 42:26Speaker 1: and he mentioned Ryden. Al Michaels told some great stories about.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Kenny just how smart he was.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Right Ivy leaguer, you know, ran the Maple least well
- 42:34Speaker 1: could have been was a politician for a period of time.
- 42:37Speaker 2: You can't find people like Ken Dryden, right.
- 42:40Speaker 5: No, and Dan Shaughnessy, great sports writer Boston Globe put
- 42:44Speaker 5: it to try to explain, Hey, look I'm talking about
- 42:47Speaker 5: the Canadians. I write for Boston. But he was the
- 42:50Speaker 5: Bill Bradley, uh who became a US addition to being
- 42:56Speaker 5: a college I mean, unbelievable all American at Princeton and
- 43:01Speaker 5: was not the star of the Knicks, but played on
- 43:03Speaker 5: the champion ship Knicks teams of seventy seventy three and
- 43:06Speaker 5: with greaton and went on to quote more important things. Well,
- 43:11Speaker 5: Ken Dryden shat out like brought an agent in the
- 43:15Speaker 5: sham pollack And who's this? Why, I don't know he's
- 43:18Speaker 5: my agent. He's Ark Kaminski. He went to Cornell with me.
- 43:21Speaker 5: Well that was behind him. I'm gonna go to law school.
- 43:24Speaker 5: Then he'll never he'll never do that. He's getting paid
- 43:27Speaker 5: as a page. Whatever the hell it was, right, and
- 43:30Speaker 5: a couple of lootings. And but he did I mean
- 43:34Speaker 5: that was part to sit out of he did it.
- 43:38Speaker 5: These are the Canadians. This is an agent, the Canadian.
- 43:43Speaker 5: We're gonna pay you. Well, we're gonna pay you well,
- 43:45Speaker 5: nobody in hockey didn't. Right, He might have been the
- 43:48Speaker 5: first or just about the first that even did that
- 43:51Speaker 5: in hockey, let alone the players Association and the way
- 43:55Speaker 5: he played gold and stood straight up. You had him.
- 44:00Speaker 5: You mentioned Bernie Paromp with the great bumper stickers, which
- 44:03Speaker 5: reminds me of a bumper sticker in Boston. Have you
- 44:06Speaker 5: used to see instead of only Jesus says more than
- 44:09Speaker 5: Birdie paranh Jesus saves and Esposito scores on the rebound
- 44:14Speaker 5: like that was that was in Boston then? And then
- 44:18Speaker 5: of course the other name you're gonna bring up was
- 44:21Speaker 5: that Jackaman Because the Rangers were not good. He roamed
- 44:27Speaker 5: to the blue line, which goalies never did it dove
- 44:31Speaker 5: you know, like a soccer goalie maybe on a breakaway,
- 44:34Speaker 5: but the ball way ahead and get to you. Didn't
- 44:37Speaker 5: do that. And by the way, he started without a mask.
- 44:41Speaker 5: And so those three goalies we can name a few
- 44:46Speaker 5: others from the era, and Jacomin a little ahead of
- 44:50Speaker 5: the other two. And although we played into the seventies,
- 44:53Speaker 5: obviously those three guys, a little part of us passed
- 44:56Speaker 5: away when we lost the three of them.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I was. It was sad with them and they're
- 45:02Speaker 3: gonna be missed. And I mean the other one I
- 45:05Speaker 3: want to I mean your knowledge of hockey just talking
- 45:07Speaker 3: to you now is a lot more than you let on.
- 45:09Speaker 3: Talk to me a little bit about the Whalers. I
- 45:11Speaker 3: heard you were a longtime support of the Whalers. I
- 45:14Speaker 3: was fond of that team. I had that jersey growing up.
- 45:17Speaker 3: Was so sad, you know, it's one of those things.
- 45:20Speaker 3: I lose the expos, I lose the Whalers. You know,
- 45:22Speaker 3: maybe the Canadians next up. It's sad days. But talk
- 45:25Speaker 3: to me some of your memories of the Whalers. And
- 45:27Speaker 3: is it true that you might have missed the last
- 45:29Speaker 3: game in Hartford?
- 45:31Speaker 5: Why I did, because I'll tell you why in a minute.
- 45:36Speaker 5: That let me ask you. So you grew up Quebec
- 45:39Speaker 5: or Montreal is.
- 45:41Speaker 3: So I grew up in Montrealia and then I've lived
- 45:44Speaker 3: in both.
- 45:44Speaker 5: Why the Whalers, I mean we were in the same division,
- 45:48Speaker 5: you know, why the Whalers. But I have a great
- 45:51Speaker 5: Montreal story about someone else like you. But tell me
- 45:54Speaker 5: why the colors were cool? You got that?
- 45:56Speaker 3: It was the colors in the Jersey, and I just
- 45:59Speaker 3: I was drawn to it as a young kid, and
- 46:01Speaker 3: it was just one of those things. I stuck with
- 46:04Speaker 3: it because of that, And then it hurt as much.
- 46:06Speaker 3: I was never I didn't grow up in nordiaks fan
- 46:09Speaker 3: those habs, I was. I get whipped if I didn't
- 46:11Speaker 3: root for the halbs that I always quietly had. You know,
- 46:14Speaker 3: underneath the habs Jersey, little Whaler's there, Little Whaler's color.
- 46:18Speaker 5: Well, first of all, nobody wore those colors. Then you know,
- 46:23Speaker 5: now Vancouver's tried to copy it, and there's others. But second,
- 46:27Speaker 5: it's the best logo still. There's three things in it
- 46:30Speaker 5: the Whales teil the h of the w You didn't
- 46:33Speaker 5: even know that. Check it out, third third, do you know?
- 46:37Speaker 5: And I don't have last year's stature, but Hartford's last
- 46:42Speaker 5: game the Whalers in Hartford was ninety seven. Okay, so
- 46:46Speaker 5: that's almost thirty years. Right, they're still in the middle
- 46:51Speaker 5: of merchandise sold for NHL teams. They're like fifteenth sixteenth
- 46:57Speaker 5: because of the colors. It's not all of a sudden.
- 46:59Speaker 5: People in Connecticut realized we had a team once, so
- 47:05Speaker 5: I didn't. I had season tickets late because our kids,
- 47:09Speaker 5: you know, we couldn't go with them. But when they
- 47:11Speaker 5: were eight, nine, ten, last few years we had them.
- 47:15Speaker 5: Of course went the games before that, not in the
- 47:19Speaker 5: WHA days, but ESPN they were you know, there were
- 47:22Speaker 5: our teams. So eighties and then like I said, the nineties.
- 47:27Speaker 5: And the reason I missed the last Whaler game, the
- 47:30Speaker 5: second to last game, which only really hockey fans will
- 47:36Speaker 5: was the game in which the primost fought. Keith was
- 47:39Speaker 5: on Hartford and his brother was on Buffalo, right, Yeah,
- 47:43Speaker 5: that was right, And that was the second to last game,
- 47:47Speaker 5: and Hartford went at home. Then we played the two
- 47:50Speaker 5: worst teams in the league at the time, ottawat and
- 47:54Speaker 5: the Islanders, who I loved in the eighties too because
- 47:57Speaker 5: they couldn't play any style, but that's another discussion. So
- 48:02Speaker 5: I was like cold roof for only for winners. But
- 48:03Speaker 5: I love when hockey's played great. I mean that, that's
- 48:07Speaker 5: that tops a lot of things hockey fans. But and
- 48:12Speaker 5: by the time they came back on Sunday to the
- 48:15Speaker 5: last game, which against I think Tampa Bay, my kids
- 48:20Speaker 5: had a birthday party to go to. I was sure
- 48:22Speaker 5: we were gonna have one, you know, first round of
- 48:25Speaker 5: the playoffs, three out of five, we'd have one game
- 48:27Speaker 5: and then a looha. But but we didn't. We left
- 48:33Speaker 5: Buffalo Buffalo, we were like three up with three to go,
- 48:37Speaker 5: and in whaler fashion, we didn't make it. So that's
- 48:42Speaker 5: why it's like I was working the show. I committed
- 48:45Speaker 5: to do the show, like thirday, gonna do it or not. Yeah,
- 48:48Speaker 5: it ain't gonna be the last game, and so I'll
- 48:52Speaker 5: see them in the playoffs playing whoever they were going
- 48:55Speaker 5: to play for the Adams Division or by then nineties,
- 48:58Speaker 5: I don't know what they were still called. But that's
- 49:01Speaker 5: why now I only want to the forum once when
- 49:05Speaker 5: I took the family up with about the fourth to
- 49:07Speaker 5: last game, I said, we got to do this. And
- 49:11Speaker 5: the cab driver picked us up at the airport had
- 49:16Speaker 5: a Hartford Whalers hat on whoa whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 49:20Speaker 5: whoa whoa, and he goes. I said, so, what's the story.
- 49:25Speaker 5: We've just landed from Hartford. We used to have a
- 49:27Speaker 5: little eighteen seater that was a Air Canada Jazz used
- 49:31Speaker 5: to have a yeah, yeah, nonsense. We had a fifty
- 49:35Speaker 5: seater every day in and out of Toronto, and am about
- 49:38Speaker 5: an eighteen seater in and out of Montreal. And he said,
- 49:46Speaker 5: I like the Canadians, but I'm a Whaler fan. I
- 49:48Speaker 5: love the Colors and we see them a lot. They're
- 49:52Speaker 5: in our division, and it's I'm the only one rooting
- 49:54Speaker 5: for him, and I kind of I like it. So
- 49:58Speaker 5: then that game, I think Montreal scored ten or eleven goals.
- 50:01Speaker 5: I'd have to look it up, and I forget who
- 50:02Speaker 5: had all the goals. But on a little flight back
- 50:08Speaker 5: the next day, sitting right behind me was general manager
- 50:13Speaker 5: of the Canadians, Bob Gaine, and or, as they used
- 50:18Speaker 5: to Friendchifies the dual language announcement. You know, Bob gave
- 50:27Speaker 5: me right. My favorite franchifies the names you know and
- 50:34Speaker 5: I don't. Of course you had to say it with
- 50:36Speaker 5: a French accent. Yeah, so there's my So you weren't alone.
- 50:41Speaker 5: There was a cab driver could have been you could have.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Been nineteen ninety four, He mentioned when the Rangers whin
- 50:48Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup, a crowning achievement for Neil Smith, but
- 50:51Speaker 1: also for our dear late friend John Saunders, and Neil
- 50:54Speaker 1: told the story at John's memorial.
- 50:56Speaker 2: There at ESPM you hosted that. You know, he was
- 50:58Speaker 2: so close to John.
- 50:59Speaker 1: He was when the Rangers when he looked up and
- 51:01Speaker 1: he saw John the booth, he was pumping his fist,
- 51:02Speaker 1: and Neil, through tears, is saying, I felt like when
- 51:04Speaker 1: I won John one two, like it was unbelievable, that
- 51:07Speaker 1: bond that they had and that moment. Specifically, Robin Roberts,
- 51:10Speaker 1: an old colleague and friend, told the story of seeing
- 51:12Speaker 1: hockey sticks in someone's car.
- 51:14Speaker 2: Who's that? Because that's sounderstick?
- 51:15Speaker 1: What that brother gets stat with hockey like goh ahead,
- 51:18Speaker 1: John's playing hockey.
- 51:19Speaker 2: After his hosting Sports Center.
- 51:20Speaker 1: You've always been very generous in saying, hey, it's not
- 51:23Speaker 1: just being Bob Lee. It was John Saunders as well.
- 51:25Speaker 1: He was such a key element at Espin's early days.
- 51:28Speaker 1: A word or two about our dear friend.
- 51:31Speaker 5: Well as you know and viewers know, and Toronto and
- 51:35Speaker 5: you know knew him on TV a long time before
- 51:38Speaker 5: he went to Baltimore, before he came to us. He
- 51:43Speaker 5: could do any sport and handle it. There was a grace.
- 51:48Speaker 5: Indignity is more of a word, but I not I'm
- 51:52Speaker 5: trying to be. He wouldn't try to be anybody. I mean,
- 51:55Speaker 5: he can very, you know very. This is who I
- 52:00Speaker 5: am And I'm not trying to be boisterous, but I'm
- 52:02Speaker 5: just trying to be was a presence of John, and
- 52:07Speaker 5: he didn't and I don't mean that he was second
- 52:10Speaker 5: fiddle to me when we would do sports and we
- 52:13Speaker 5: had we did at the time in the late eighties,
- 52:17Speaker 5: that was the only show of sports that there was
- 52:18Speaker 5: an hour at. I mean we didn't call it the
- 52:22Speaker 5: big show. That's no knock on where it when we
- 52:25Speaker 5: we thought it was the big show because it was
- 52:28Speaker 5: the only hour and John and that's not a knock
- 52:30Speaker 5: it just we call it Sports Shatter. The Sunday eleven,
- 52:34Speaker 5: and with such a good time doing it. He he
- 52:41Speaker 5: enjoyed laughing, but he was not a joke teller, you know.
- 52:45Speaker 5: He's one of those, you know. But so if you're
- 52:49Speaker 5: in a two shot of discussing a game, he could
- 52:52Speaker 5: get right down and dirty with analyze. But he also
- 52:55Speaker 5: had a sense of him his opinion didn't have to
- 52:58Speaker 5: be first. See a lot of us, probably myself included,
- 53:03Speaker 5: forget that everything. You know, we don't forget it, but
- 53:05Speaker 5: we younger. Yeah, you know, everybody on set here, let's
- 53:10Speaker 5: talk about it. So he it wasn't the last time
- 53:16Speaker 5: I saw him, but it was within the last because
- 53:22Speaker 5: later on he wouldn't in the building and that often
- 53:26Speaker 5: or was doing college football, but I wouldn't on whatever.
- 53:30Speaker 5: We wouldn't work together a lot. And although we did
- 53:34Speaker 5: that Sunday night thing when primetime was gone, and that
- 53:37Speaker 5: enabled the two of us to rebond professionally and personally.
- 53:42Speaker 5: You guys will get this. So it was I want
- 53:47Speaker 5: to say, ten years ago, which would be twenty fifteen.
- 53:51Speaker 5: In November it would have been the fortieth anniversary of
- 53:54Speaker 5: the wreck of the Edmit Fitzgerald. So you know where
- 53:57Speaker 5: I'm going By the way, It's fifty this November, sung
- 54:01Speaker 5: by Gordon Leefoot, who I loved and John loved. I
- 54:05Speaker 5: never met him by John may have. I never did,
- 54:07Speaker 5: but he was playing in the Ridgefield Playhouse like eight hundred.
- 54:13Speaker 5: But he's making a little tour that month of the
- 54:15Speaker 5: fortieth anniversary of the wreck of the Infant zero, and
- 54:18Speaker 5: I went with John and his brother Bernie played for Quebec,
- 54:21Speaker 5: of course, and it wasn't the last time we were together,
- 54:27Speaker 5: but it was one that Bernie and I will still
- 54:29Speaker 5: text and talk about because it was a Canadian evening,
- 54:35Speaker 5: if you will. But it was in Connecticut, a gourding life.
- 54:38Speaker 5: It was to everybody other than Huey Lewis, I've probably
- 54:41Speaker 5: saw Gordon Lifefoot more than anybody else. By the way,
- 54:44Speaker 5: if you're asking me my rock and roll, Huey Lewis
- 54:47Speaker 5: my buddy. But I think Gordy came through Connecticut every
- 54:52Speaker 5: late September because the air it was kind of a
- 54:55Speaker 5: semi outdoor theater and it was the air was getting
- 54:58Speaker 5: a little chilly. It was perfect for him, you know
- 55:01Speaker 5: what I mean. And right John was the ultimate professional.
- 55:07Speaker 5: I learned a lot by watching him. Ad Man guys
- 55:11Speaker 5: almost what he didn't do as much as he did,
- 55:14Speaker 5: if that makes sense.
- 55:15Speaker 1: Yeah, first, Voice of the Raptors worked at CITYTV forever,
- 55:18Speaker 1: very proud of his Cadien roots. And like you said,
- 55:20Speaker 1: look at the sports reporters, you go first, right, He
- 55:22Speaker 1: allowed those guys to have their voices and then he
- 55:24Speaker 1: supplemented them.
- 55:25Speaker 5: So absolutely, yeah, we miss them.
- 55:30Speaker 3: But before I let you go, and I wanted to ask,
- 55:33Speaker 3: I'm sure you had an amazing nickname for your dear
- 55:37Speaker 3: friend as well as many others, and I feel like
- 55:39Speaker 3: it's a rite of passage. Is that something that you
- 55:42Speaker 3: just always did and is there any nicknames that stick
- 55:45Speaker 3: out to you that you hold dear to your heart?
- 55:49Speaker 5: Well, so the nicknames, and I could take a long
- 55:53Speaker 5: time explaining it. But when you do the overnight show
- 55:56Speaker 5: for the first four years, which I did with your
- 55:58Speaker 5: two thirty Easter in eleven thirty in San Francisco, in
- 56:01Speaker 5: nine thirty in Hawaii, but you're in Connecticut, it's January,
- 56:07Speaker 5: and you know you're driving home at three thirty in
- 56:08Speaker 5: the morning and it's snowing. By the way, the plows
- 56:11Speaker 5: don't come out till five. So which on the street,
- 56:15Speaker 5: which I learned. So we had done these nicknames just
- 56:21Speaker 5: fooling around at college, just so a couple of them
- 56:25Speaker 5: in the first full year I did in nineteen eighty baseball.
- 56:29Speaker 5: Whereas I try to explain it, a lot of the
- 56:32Speaker 5: games weren't on. So you had Seattle five, Kansas City
- 56:35Speaker 5: two on the screen for fifty seconds. Well, so we
- 56:41Speaker 5: had no highlights. We're telling So and So went to
- 56:44Speaker 5: for for George Brett blah blah blah, and a couple
- 56:49Speaker 5: of them in those days a quarter to three in
- 56:52Speaker 5: the morning, slipt out nothing. You know, none of them
- 56:55Speaker 5: are derogatory. I wouldn't do that. It was either John
- 56:59Speaker 5: Mayberry RFD or Frank Tanada was a really good pitcher,
- 57:04Speaker 5: Franka Dakker. Those are the first two that came out
- 57:07Speaker 5: by accident. And I didn't plan it because if you
- 57:10Speaker 5: plan a gig, it usually doesn't work. Okay, I mean
- 57:14Speaker 5: you can plan a story. I get it, but I'm
- 57:17Speaker 5: going to be known if I do this, and the no, no, no,
- 57:20Speaker 5: So it was organic and then everyone was laughing and
- 57:22Speaker 5: what the hell did you say? And I don't know.
- 57:24Speaker 5: It came out blah blah blah. And so we did
- 57:28Speaker 5: baseball every night, lo and behold. I probably had one
- 57:31Speaker 5: thousand before the eighties were over with. I'd get lists
- 57:35Speaker 5: of fifty from people, and frankly, if I read them
- 57:38Speaker 5: and laughed, I put them in and so and for me,
- 57:43Speaker 5: I didn't sleep with the rosters. That's our rumors start.
- 57:47Speaker 5: So I you might have had a beer, you know,
- 57:53Speaker 5: and look at a name for ten seconds, and if
- 57:55Speaker 5: you had one grade if not not, It wasn't like
- 57:59Speaker 5: I wrote it in the script or anything like that.
- 58:02Speaker 5: It just so best of all time. The ones that
- 58:06Speaker 5: were the best were either well, primarily that you didn't
- 58:12Speaker 5: have to know really who the player was, what he did,
- 58:16Speaker 5: what he who he played for, if it appealed to everything.
- 58:22Speaker 5: And sometimes I had, of course a ton of rock
- 58:24Speaker 5: and roll. Sometimes food George Taco Bell for example. You know,
- 58:30Speaker 5: I mean everybody knows what Taco Bell. You don't have
- 58:32Speaker 5: to know Blue Jays or he had a Burrito Supreme.
- 58:37Speaker 5: I would do when he hit a homer, right. But
- 58:41Speaker 5: but the best ones are ones that everybody can get.
- 58:44Speaker 5: So the best would be Bert blyleven, Bert beyond B eleven.
- 58:51Speaker 5: And the reason that's the best is every parent you
- 58:55Speaker 5: don't have to know that he won almost three hundred
- 58:57Speaker 5: games and had the best curveball in the business. Or Pittsford,
- 59:00Speaker 5: Pittsburgh or Minnesota or other. You had to know that.
- 59:04Speaker 5: Your parent told you that once, and as a parent,
- 59:08Speaker 5: you told your kid that one. So a lot of
- 59:11Speaker 5: them go back to are You don't have to be
- 59:13Speaker 5: Einstein to figure these out, you know, it's not the point.
- 59:18Speaker 5: Of course, they're rock and roll ones. I'm trying to
- 59:20Speaker 5: think of. Let me see the Blue Jays in those days.
- 59:23Speaker 5: Of course, dep Erbert amazing, No, that's the best one.
- 59:28Speaker 5: But roberta. I'm an American history major, all right, So
- 59:32Speaker 5: Roberto remember the Alamar. I mean, I could you not
- 59:36Speaker 5: have that the ease before you get so you guys
- 59:39Speaker 5: didn't see me up there then, I mean I was
- 59:42Speaker 5: doing just football, so I mean on TSNEA, so Blue
- 59:46Speaker 5: Jays Joe Carter was Stargeant Carter. That was okay. Oh
- 59:53Speaker 5: here's one. I love that. I'm doing a show primarily
- 59:58Speaker 5: for Canada, or I love it so that the Atlanta
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: Toronto Worlds. So the first World Churious game ever in
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: Canada obviously was Game three, and I finished. I did
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: the pregame and the post game on ESPN then and
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: I said, somehow, I find it very fit that the
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: battery tonight, the pitcher and catcher the Toronto Blue Jays
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: in the first game ever north of in Canada was
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: one Canadian Guzman pitching to Pat north of the Borders. Okay, now,
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: I can't do any better than that, right, I haven't
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: thought of that in a long time, by the way,
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: So there you go.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: You think of a career, I think it out in
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: the playoffs that is absolutely perfect.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Before we let the great Chris Berman go, I texted
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: our dear friend Rob Lemley, one of the great producers,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: that he's I got Boom on and so lem text me.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: He goes, Hey, tell Boom he's playing TPC with Boog
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: and Froday. Tell him, Bobby, zim said, hit him straight,
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: and then he added, he goes, you know Boom's a
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: huge Dylan fan. I said, no, I know, but he
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: would lose because no huge Dylan guy. So I have
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: to ask you, what did you think of Timid Tate's
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Shallow May in the Dylan movie that came out last year?
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: Awesome, didn't you? Awesome? Great Bob Dylan, Although you know
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: I could, I'm sure he has. I have no idea
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: who he is, babe, so so, I'm sure he doesn't
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: know who I am, but I don't care. But he's
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: Bob Dylan. I thought the movie was un believable. I
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: my favorite little part. It was a subtlety you wouldn't
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: even a spoken line because it's my all time favorite song.
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: Bobby zim is Robert Zimmerman, which is Bob Dylan's real name.
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: By the way, he grew up very close to where
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: the Edmund Fitzgerald set out on its final cruise, by
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: the way, on the Iron Range and Hibbing, Minnesota, very
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: very closer. Maybe it was where it's song, but what
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: I gotta look again? But what look up? Hibbing Minnesota,
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: and it's pretty close to it. I mean again Edmund Fitzgero,
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: but that's Gordon Leifoot. My favorite part was when he
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: decided to experiment with electric guitar and it was like
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: a rolling stone in the movie. Now maybe he in
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: real life played another one, but I mean, like a
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: rolling stone is I don't know if there's a better
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: song other than Beethoven's Ninth I haven't heard it, Okay,
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: so So and his his lyrics were more interesting than
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: Beethoven's you know. Oh yeah, so so at the end
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: of the set when these guys came in that he
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: didn't even know, Al Cooper, you know, they finished playing
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: like a Rolling Stone, and Bob Dylan never smiles, smile
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: for like five seconds. It's like he knew. I loved
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: the way this sounds. He didn't speak it. I got
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: it as a you know, old time rock and roller.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: That's my favorite scene in the whole movie. And unspoken
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: five seconds like, yeah, like a rolling stone, that's a
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: pretty good sound that might work, and it did so
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: lem the best. Yeah, we we every time we talked.
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: Bobby z I used to use Robert Zimmerman, by the way,
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: as a back when hotels weren't smart enough. At Super Bowls,
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: the World Series. Oh it's Chris Berman there. Yeah, let
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: me put the call through at three in the morning,
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: like you know, it could be a radio show in Hawaii,
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: I mean, you know, or the first thing in the morning,
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: which would be in in Toronto's case much rougher. You know,
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: at six am, when somebody thinks you're awake and you
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: you know, found out that they had Mulson's and the
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: bats like down the street till two or three OCL
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: but whatever. So I used to use every now and
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: then as my fake name. I don't anymore Robert Zimmerman,
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: just just so you had to know who I was
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: or you wouldn't get up there.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: So there you go, Willable alias Robert Zimmerman a kka
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Chris Breman.
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: Boom.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: This is so much fun.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Last year there was an ESPN reunion, so Oberman texted me.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: He goes, hey, there's a reading going on. I said,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: I'm sure there's always arena. At some point He's like, no,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I'm going.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: And there was a fleeting thought to me.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: I said, forty Ronzo Road and I checked the list
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: of who's there. I think you went and Bobbley and
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: I said, you know what, I might pull the driveway
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: just to see you. The General and KO together and
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: they go, okay, I'm out here.
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: Well they you know, we had like four hundred and
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: fifty people there. I talked to two hundred and fifty
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: of them. I had something to say to all of them.
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: I can't remember probably one hundred and fifty to two hundred,
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: not who they were, but you know, well with so
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: and so there, boy, I don't know now Keith was
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: to my high school.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: Do you know that you Overenman go way back?
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Which is incredible considering the influence both of you guys
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: have had on my life and everyone's life.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Was a sportscaster fan.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: Both great, great broadcasters, but very different, but both huge
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: baseball guys.
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: Yes, Keith, Keith is two years using my brother's class,
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: two years behind me in high school. He he was
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: interesting then and he's interesting now. I mean I say
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: that with love and respect obviously, but you should have
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: come the next one of that ILK would probably be
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: you know, the fiftieth. So well, we'll leave a light
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: on for you, we'll leave a bed made. Okay, Hey,
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: I applaud you on your success. You've always approached it
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: with the great attitude. And obviously this you guys here
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: doing this podcast, it's the same thing, and it's it's
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: I applaud you for being a man of all seasons,
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: a man you you know you you handle all of it.
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: Like our friend John Saunders were differently, we're all different.
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: But you can't tell that. Well, he did hockey last night,
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: be doing baseball tonight, so he might have missed like
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: some pitch at two and two that was a ball.
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: And why didn't he comment on that, Well, because he's
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: watching Opening Night of hockey, like you know, so you
- 1:06:19Speaker 5: can't what I found doing prime time when they're eight
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: games on at one o'clock. Anyone that says they're watching
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: eight games is lying or frost eye. Okay, nothing better.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: I get as somebody who deeply admires you and all
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: the work you put in being an observer Sundays, Fellas,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I'm telling you afternoons the boardroom, you Tom Jackson, moret
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: just watching the games.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Nothing better?
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: Right from one to four, that was a funny room.
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: I remember Marty Schottenheimer worked with us one year. Marty
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: won two hundred games, and I mean, et cetera. And
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: it was the first week. We're not yelling at the coach,
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: but you know, five minutes in a game or two minutes,
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: what are you doing? What do you do? You know
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: nothing in particular. Marty turned to me away I knew forever,
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: he said, Did you do this to me too? He said, well,
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: of course, remember Kansas City had trouble beating Lway. I said,
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: only when you played Denver. Marty he lost it. He
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: thought that was funny. But now we took it easy
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: on you, Marty. What was I going to say? Yelled
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: at you all the time. So that's a fun room
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: because from one to four we've done the morning show.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: We've been there since seven in the morning. Again, we're
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: not in a coal mine, none of us. Let's keep
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: it in mind, but one to four we're not worried
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: about you know, oh this highlight. We need more of that,
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: or that shouldn't have been a bit. That was the
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: time when we could watch football and the room was hysterical.
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: There are forty people in there. Everybody had a rooting
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: interest or an interest. It just you can't recreate the
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: characters in that room. I think, and I saw. I'll
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: give you a saying that somebody told me if and
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: when I well, I mean, I'll hang them up. I
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: don't know that many years left. But that's not the point.
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: The point is a real good friend of mine who
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: won championships as GM in baseball one it was different,
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: and all he goes, you know what, I don't miss
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: the circus, but I missed the clowns, and that room
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: at about fifty clowns. So I'm glad you brought that up.
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: Keep that in mind. Don't miss the circus, but I
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: missed the clowns.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: Oh the pearls of wisdom of Chris Breman. Boomber is well, I'll.
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: Give Brian Saban credit for that one. I can't kill
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: it from him. He one of my best friends.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Snaves of course the architect. All those great San Francisco
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: Giants teams.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: You didn't get to see three World Series teams from
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: the twenty ten to twenty four team is amazing. Boomer serious,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: I can't thank you enough your generosity, your mentorship to
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: guys like me.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: I think you always had time for any of us.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Didn't matter who it was, what member of the crew,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: you knew the impact you had on us.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: I cannot thank you enough, my friend. This was awesome.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: It's great to see both you guys. This is fun.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Well, I am not the only Cinophile on this podcast.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Cinefan sixty props to twel and JD. Both of you
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: guys said you got to see Friendship, so I took
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: your recommendation. I took it to the house, just like
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: you told me, GENI to watch Porno. Jillian Muller and
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: I watched it. I enjoyed it, and Friendship was very funny.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: As you guys had talked with Tim Robinson's work, which
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I was not familiar with, and now tal tells me
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: there's an HBO show. I think he's got developing gendy
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: as you called it, quirky, funny, absurdist. I mean, at
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: times when you think of Chris Frod of the way
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: he was just ranting and raving. I think it's hard
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: to laugh out loud these days. In the movie I
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: laughed a lot. Five times I watch the movie of
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: My Couch.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: I thought it was hilarious.
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: Oh what the scene when he brings his wife in
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: the sewer and then just like and then just tell
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: that loses his phone trying to jump and they lost
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: his shoe. And then I mean the whole stolen valor
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: thing with the guy with the Vietnam hat. Oh that
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: that scene when he's playing drums, because.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: It seems like fairly, you know, in consequential, like, oh,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: where's the bathroom? It's called you the guy whose.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: Wife was gone, and then just turns on him like,
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: oh my god, the.
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: Zero sixty and then he then he does the speech
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: on the chair and then the guy gets up and
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: jumps in the chairs. He's just shitting on his wife.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: It just it's so weird and it's so Tim Robinson
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: and uh yeah, I mean I loved it. I thought
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: it was great. I thought it was just it's out
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: there when they sing all together.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Well, I was gonna say the early scene when he's
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: going to Paul Rud's house and he goes into the
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: screen door and they're like, oh my god, you okay,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: and then the pregnant pods. Then it shatters, and then
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: afters he takes.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: It way too seriously.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: He just punches Paul and the guys guys, guys, and
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: he's like, okay, I'm in trouble.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: Guys.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: He puts the bar soap in his mouth.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: And the look of just shocking disgust in their faces,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: like what is this guy all about?
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: It was to talk about just getting so excited to
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: be in a group of friends and just making every
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: mistake possible.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: I think it's a good topic though. Tell think about
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: you and I are both the same age at this point.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: You have kids, You know, your social circle is what
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: it is. So if a new neighbor moves in goes, hey,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: we've got to hang out. It is kind of a
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: big dealer. You're like, well, like I kind of already
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: have my friends, or I would like to expand my
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: horizons to new friends. So I could understand the adjective
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: that Tim Robinson has right his wife's very busy social circle.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: He's looking to make some friends. He's so excited when
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: he's a guy like Paul running his life.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: I love the whole premise of middle aged men trying
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: to make friends when like most middle aged men probably
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: haven't made a new friend since like college, right correct,
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: And the awkwardness.
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: It's an absolute cringe fest.
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: I freaking love it.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: And Tim Robinson, I mean, let's give this guy some
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: snaps the run he's been on the last few years.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: Detroit I know, av if you want to do a
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: deep dive, it's all all on Netflix. A lot of
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: it's on Detriyah, Detroiters, Detroiters. I think you should leave
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: and then friendship and now he has the Chair Company
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: coming out I think this weekend, which I'm all over.
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: I mean, I love that this guy was on SNL
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: for like two years and no one noticed him, and
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: now he's one of the funniest guys in the world.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: In my opinion, He's just like it's like that. It's
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: that awkward comedy of like these weird he takes these
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: like weird social It just these it's just these like
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: moments where you'd think about it, oh yeah, and he
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: takes it like to a whole nother level, like like
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: I mean and I think you should leave? What does
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: he do? The one when the guy doesn't wash his
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: hands in the bathroom and then says there's fecal matter
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: all over the house. But he like, you wouldn't expect
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: me to call you out because you didn't wash your
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: hands in the toilet. But he's like he took a
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: poop and then didn't wash it, and but like just
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: just expands on it for like twenty minutes, and you're like,
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: is this going to end right? And it's like it
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: just he's just you're gonna I think you should leave.
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: As some really good ones, some good skits you you
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: love av I.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: Come calling up. I think you should leave. That will
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: be the next one on my list. In DeBie Will
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: squeezing Detroiters as well. Hardly surprising news to Bruin's announcing
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: long time captain zad Aino Charlow was number retired by
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: the team.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: Jad.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: You saw it up close and personal. This guy is
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: whatever six', NINE i don't know how big he's, escaped.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: Just an eb six one, hundred like.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: A seven foot man staring at.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: You just the nasty FIERCE i mean he, WAS i
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: mean literally a gigantic presence on the.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: Ice. YEAH i know they were trying to get him
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: to kind of be part of the franchise for a little.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: BIT i think like they would have done it right,
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: away and he wanted to just kind of do his,
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: thing run six million ultraman marathons and and do all
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: these crazy. Workouts BUT i think he's just a great
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: guy to have for work ethic and leadership on your
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: on your. Team and then obviously retiring his jersey is
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: it's a it's a no. Brainer you know they have
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: there's a lot of guys in that franchise that, retired you. Know,
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: sorry then you Got patty bergeron as well coming, up
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: SO i just, think, uh it's it's it's well. Deserved
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: he's a nut. JOB i got cross checked by him
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: as much AS i Did Chris pronger ANYTIME i went
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: around that. Area but he's one of those guys you
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: just don't touch you just don't don't look at, him
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: try to beat him one on, one but do not
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: get within his orbit because if he grabs, you it's gonna.
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: Hurt and if you piss him off, too like you,
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: know let him. Sleep so BUT i mean this guy
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: was like he, was he was, going you know you.
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: Can there's The tour De, france and then there's like
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: a whole another subset of people that follow The tour De.
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: France what is that what it's called the De. France,
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: yeah is that what it's really. Called, no but there's
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: a name for. It and he like does it where
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: they he follows the same. Root and there's like a
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: second race that's like people that like you and me
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: could go put on a leotard and a racing suit
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: and just ride our bike behind the turn. Fronts and
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: this guy does.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: It now he's A Verkin demers like leotard playing on
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: a little cycling.
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: For Social let's go do The tour de FRANZ i
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: like it took the junior.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Circuit you can't do, obviously no one's an insane Person
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: litstenre on, Steroids so just do through the junior.
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: Circuits now they're all on. Steroids so it's, like do
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: the junior. One and he's, like but just think of
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: that human on a, Bike think of that body on a,
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: bike because like the structural integrity of that, bike like
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: that bike needs to be made out of adamantium or.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: Vibranium trow, You marvel, FANS i love.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: It last, Thought Florida. Panthers nobody wants a three peat
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: unless you're From. Florida come, on it's better for hockey
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: when different teams. Win and, Yet jad you were pretty
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: impressed with what they did at opening night without arguably
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: the two best players and Get Choko.
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: Barcuff, YEAH i. THINK i think the only thing that's
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: going to stop this team from a three peat is.
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: Injury so depending how healthy they can stay throughout the.
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: Year but this, team if they're, HEALTHY i don't see
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: a team in THE nhl touching. HIM i, mean they're just.
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: BUILT i think that fourth line With Luke connan now
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: it's looked. Fantastic you, know the third, line which you
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: know When barkoff at Could chuck come, back they'll probably
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: be Out Matki samuskovic and uh, yes Per. Boquist they
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: get they get on the. Board Evan rodriguez down the,
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: middle looked great third line. Center, uh it's gonna be
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: very very interesting to see how and When barkoff comes.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: BACK i know for a fact that man is going
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: to beat the nine months timeline by three months at.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: Least Eric spolsters when he said The Miami heat, coaches
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: being the hockey, insider he, goes, oh, yeah he told
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: me five to six, months which is as you.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Said we'll put it At march Or. April he'll be.
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: Back he'll be back In march and At, march end Of,
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: march probably get the last two games of the season
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: and right into the. Playoffs Kad chuck will be back.
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: Healthy we'll see how healthy he. Is but just like,
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: this this team that was there can make a deep
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: run in the. Playoffs just THAT i asked.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Them for The panthers, PEOPLE i, said, like who picks
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: up the slack That barkoff and Can. Chuck so, Honestly,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Bennett lindell And, mackie, like those are the three that
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: they relying that they think they can make that next
