Transcript
- 0:30Sorry, it's Friday afternoon. I'm sitting here with a dead set legends that
- 0:37some of you may know already. I'm pretty excited. I am here today
- 0:42representing Heavy Magazine Australia with Ronrickson. Malcolm, thank you for having your chattles
- 0:50now. Thank you very much. Some may know you anyway, like you're
- 0:54a pretty big rock and roll star. I think you've played with many artists.
- 0:58I think there's there's there's nothing this guy doesn't do that's funny. Sorry,
- 1:03introduce yourself and tellas now you Let's see, my name is Tommy Hendrickson.
- 1:11Let's see. I am Melbourne, not Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia right
- 1:17now and man told Alice Cooper and I play with the Hollywood Vampires and uh
- 1:23in a band called Cossbond Skelly, which we're that is what we're here about
- 1:26today. We're gonna talk about today Cossbond Skelly's project that I've been working on
- 1:30for the past five years, and the record's finally gonna come out October twenty
- 1:36fifth. We got more songs coming every month. Next week, uh,
- 1:41you know, on a couple of days twenty four, I am the Wolf
- 1:45that's coming out. Then we have Money Sex of God coming out in May
- 1:49tenth, I think, and then High on You and then another one than
- 1:55the record, yeah, October twenty fifth. So it's good. We're moving
- 1:57forward. Yeah, and it's not just a band, Like for those that
- 2:02don't know, I've done my research and it's absolutely amazing. It's it's so
- 2:06much more than just a band and songs. There's characters, there's seven inches,
- 2:10there's comics, there's a short movie. It's everything. There is a
- 2:19rock and roll alien here saving humans trying. Yeah. Yeah, that's the
- 2:23whole good Humans. Sorry, you have to tell us about how it kind
- 2:29of started in these characters, you know, the whole thing. It started
- 2:35with the name you know what I mean, like Crossbones Skolly. You know.
- 2:39It was this old aunt Molly Jackson song from the twenties about poverty and
- 2:45all of stuff. And but it's called Crossbones Scully. Yeah, And and
- 2:51I was one of the names I worked out for me in the band.
- 2:53I was like, oh, that's a cool name, and no one had
- 2:54I was like, I gotta use this. So then and I'm all into
- 3:00like aliens, space and and not conspiracy theory. It's just stuff that you
- 3:06got, really and questioning stuff, you know what I mean. And uh
- 3:10so when I started writing all the lyrics, I just it's pretty much about
- 3:15my life, you know what I mean. I've always been that guy.
- 3:19I was always fighting against the grain, going against the brain, trying to
- 3:22do what's right by people, you know what I mean. And I was
- 3:27felt like an alligence, yeah, you know. And that was when I
- 3:31was coming up with the stuff. Me and Alice a lot. Alice Cooper
- 3:36actually helped me out with a lot of the story because I kept on tell
- 3:38us like, I want to do this movie. I want to do this
- 3:39comic book and his character, Crossbone Scully, he's gonna come back to Earth
- 3:44and he's gonna kill everyone, all the all, but he's gonna save all
- 3:47the good humans and he's gonna get rid of all the rotten ones, you
- 3:52know. So Alice is like, that's a great story, he says,
- 3:57but he says, every great story is a love story. And when he
- 4:00said that to me, I was like, damn, it's right. So
- 4:04I'm thinking, all right, you know what do I do? So I
- 4:11come up with The Sorcerer was another Als Cooper thing where he's like, we're
- 4:15getting ready to fight it signed on stage one night the open song, and
- 4:19he walks up and he goes, I got it. And I was like,
- 4:21because we had a conversation the day before, we're getting ready to sort
- 4:25the show and he's like the sauce. I go, I don't hear the
- 4:30man. I can't hear you. Boss. He's like the sauce. I
- 4:32go, what it was? The sauce to all the evil in Scutley's world.
- 4:38I go, yeah, he goes the Saucerer and I went, that's
- 4:44it. That's it. So now we got the Saucer. Now we got
- 4:46like our you know, dark Vader. And so now we got Dark Vader.
- 4:54And then I was thinking, oh cool, he's come up with some
- 4:56cool characters, you know. And now I was thinking for the I'll call
- 5:00me Alpha Watchman, you know what I mean? And uh, And I
- 5:03was like, Oh, that'd be cool if I can get like all these
- 5:06people to play the characters. And then I wanted Alice to be the Bringer
- 5:11of Life, like the dad who is like, you know, like Crossbones.
- 5:16Scully and the Sorcerer are actually brothers, you know. And Johnny Depp
- 5:21is Sorcerer because I was like, I was like, you gotta be evil,
- 5:25Jay, you gotta be evil this man. So it's like I could
- 5:28be evil brother. So Johnny is the Sorcerer and Scully is crossboned Scully.
- 5:34You know, it's like me whatever you want to call. And then I
- 5:39was like Okay. Then I was like, how do I So I'll have
- 5:42Joe. He'll be the big bad bone crushing. He'll be the muscle.
- 5:46He's Scully's like, you know, uh muscle. So then I was sticking
- 5:51all this stuff. It's writing it all down. Skully's gonna come back saying
- 5:54the world, big bad bone crush, you gonna come in. But the
- 5:57Sorcerer needs an apprentice, and I was like, I was, let me
- 6:02call some names. So I came up with Sir blood and I called up
- 6:05Mark Wilkinson, the guy who came up with all the artwork who does like
- 6:10Iron Maiden ju So I called it Wilkinson. I said, yo, you
- 6:14want to be Sir blood Win. And he's like, told me I would
- 6:15love to be Sir blood Win. So I said, right, you're Sir
- 6:19blood Win. So and he's Johnny's apprentice. And then then I thought about
- 6:26it. I was a love story. I was like, going, all
- 6:28right, so if you got the story, all there's spreading all this chaos
- 6:30around the world. There's a frequency that's spreading this thing where it's closing in
- 6:35everyone's eyes. It's like you know that roddy pipe of film. Uh,
- 6:40I think it's there alive. It was like a Robert John Copper the film
- 6:43back in the eighties where he put on the glasses and all of a sudden
- 6:46he could see everyone, and it's like and everyone in all these hidden messages.
- 6:49It's kind of like something like that. I was thinking. And then
- 6:53I was like, going, all right, there's got to be a chosen
- 6:56man. It's got to be like a kid, you know, like like
- 6:59the Eddie Murph movie. You know that movie? What the hell of the
- 7:02end is that movie? And I was like thinking, I'd be cool if
- 7:04I knew something like that. So then I was like, I gave the
- 7:08kid who was doing the comics in the in the movie. I said,
- 7:11hey, can you make it look like my sons? And I want to
- 7:14call my son kid, but my wife wouldn't let me. No, I
- 7:18don't want you to call him kid. I want to call him kid,
- 7:21but I wouldn't do it because she started going through all these like different languages
- 7:27like kids. I was like, all right, So she came up with
- 7:31film. So now in the movie, I call him kids. So and
- 7:36then I put her in the film too, which because if I had a
- 7:42daughter, I was gonna call him Piper. So that's how I got Piper
- 7:45and kid. And then I was like, all right, at the end
- 7:46of the movie, you know what I mean, I figured the whole story
- 7:49is like he's coming back, but Sully's coming back to find out what's going
- 7:55on. He gave Piper this lockett, you know what I mean, and
- 7:59this kid that whole thing. So at the end of the moving at the
- 8:03end of the film, Scully dies, the kid puts the lock inside,
- 8:07the key inside the lock, and it opens up this light. Because my
- 8:13whole thing is like there's always light at the end of the tongue, you
- 8:16know what I mean. And that said, I'm always you know, there's
- 8:18always a solution to a problem, yeah, you know, And and I
- 8:22wanted to get that brus all of a sudden, Kid comes and now he
- 8:28lifts this darkness off the planet Earth. And then that's what we stopped the
- 8:31next thing, and then Johnny ends it like yeah, so that's what that's
- 8:37based on. And then you know, I wanted to do like jewelry because
- 8:41it's like I've learned by watching like Alice Kiss Iron Maiden, where they have
- 8:48all these things, and I'm going to imagine I could have all these things
- 8:50out of the gate where I could have a comic book, I could have
- 8:52an animated film, I could have an energy drink, I could have jewelry,
- 8:58and I can have all these things. I mean that people will be
- 9:01like, that's cool. How do I get that? So yeah, you
- 9:03know, and I'm not thinking trust me, I'm not a business guy at
- 9:09all. I'm not thinking like not like how can we make more money off
- 9:13off friends, I'm not thinking that at all. I'm just sitting and going,
- 9:16how can I get a lot of things out there? When people can
- 9:18see then you know what I mean, it opens up to a wider audience
- 9:22as well, Like you know, people that might not listen to music,
- 9:26they're gonna want this. So kids are gonna think it's cool and like,
- 9:28you know, because it does a like I want that jewelry or you know
- 9:33something. So that's why it was like those and then the comics, you
- 9:35know, like some people would just want that. Yeah, It's it's cool,
- 9:39dude, because it's like, you know, because when I look at
- 9:41it, I go, I can't belive the doo And I spent a lot
- 9:43of money doing it too, you know where it's just like going, you
- 9:46know, I'm not That's the thing. It's like, it's one guy I
- 9:50talked to on tour last year. It's photographer that comes up. It's like,
- 9:54tell me, I see you're spending a lot of money on this stuff.
- 9:56He goes, he goes, what's your return on this? I looked
- 10:00at him. I was like, hey, Vic, I go, do
- 10:03you think I do this for a return? He goes, A small businessman?
- 10:05Would? I goes, I'm the worst businessman ever to Are you kidding
- 10:11me? I'm not looking for a return. I'm just looking to get the
- 10:13message out there. Yeah. And if something happens and I'm not gonna be
- 10:18one of those guys gonna charge like stupid, I'm not that guy, man,
- 10:24you know what I mean. I want everyone to do it. Yeah.
- 10:31Well that was amazing because no one even knew who we were. I
- 10:35thought it was gonna be like Smell of Glove, like no one was gonna
- 10:39show up, and we sold the room oup, you know what I mean.
- 10:41We sold the room out, and I was like, I can't believe
- 10:46everyone loved it. The response was like it was like I was sitting there
- 10:50going, fuck, we're on something, you know, and it's been taken
- 10:54a while to get it going, you know what I mean. But like
- 10:56I said, we've been going like this. It's just keep song doing this.
- 11:00Every time we lose, song keeps on going up. Yeah. So
- 11:03I was listening to I'm unbrogl and that song, like without seeing the short
- 11:11movie or knowing anything, just hearing the song itself, you can already hear
- 11:16it and it's like you want to stand at the top of the mountain and
- 11:20just rage your fist because you're a winner, right. And then when I
- 11:24was like reading more into everything, I was like, it tells that story
- 11:28already and it's just like there's so much going. I was like, this
- 11:31is never ending. It's like it's just it covers everything. But like all
- 11:35of the songs like that, And while I was listening, that's when I
- 11:37was actually like, I feel like all of us Australians need to do this
- 11:41more like it should live on mainstream radio here in Australia because like everyone always
- 11:45talks about ac DC and there's nothing like that, and we're waiting for the
- 11:48next big thing, and I was like, this is it, but more
- 11:52like this is the new you know, it lives here in Australia. Like
- 11:54it's great. And then you know, they see you're working with like you
- 11:58know, producers that hard work with, and then you'll love like Bone Scott
- 12:03and I was like, this is why it sounds like this is to be
- 12:07home. It's like Alex Harvey, Bond Scott, you know what I mean.
- 12:11Yeah, and Alex Harvey, Bond Scott, Johnny Rotten, that's like
- 12:16that's my Yeah, there's such big anthem songs and then yeah, it's just
- 12:22it's just huge. So and you got the new song coming up. I
- 12:26can't wait for you guys to hear the rest of the stuff. Man in
- 12:28the videos. The video is the next song in videos. Pretty it's pretty
- 12:33dark. Yeah, it's like there's no drums, it's just a past rap.
- 12:39Yeah, it's got like this whole pink Floyd Bog. Yeah, because
- 12:41that's the thing I wanted to make the record where it can go in different
- 12:45directions, you know what I mean. Like when I was thinking about it,
- 12:46when I'm writing this stuff, I was thinking, I want to be
- 12:48like Queen. I want to be like the Who, where they can go
- 12:50do crazy thing called love Radio Dog another one bites the Dust. That's what
- 12:56I want to do. I don't want to just do this. I want
- 12:58to go here. I want to go here. Yeah, you know,
- 13:01I think that's so good. And like you know, artists as well,
- 13:05they kind of get stuck in box. And I've noticed, like you've always
- 13:07spoken about like how you've got to learn and you're always learning so much.
- 13:11And I think that's so good to do that because at the same time,
- 13:13then artists are like, well, if you know these artists are doing it,
- 13:16we can do it because like you know, the new generation of rock
- 13:20and roll, we're looking up to these people and you included and you know
- 13:24the other bands that you're playing. And I was like, it's okay to
- 13:28do that. We don't have to stay anything, express and reach so much
- 13:31more. We can't be thinking that you've got to stay like that. That's
- 13:35like, but yeah, I'm excited for the new one and just like the
- 13:39people that you're working with within this its project and Mutt Lane as well,
- 13:43Like that's pretty exciting, that's huge. Yeah, dream come true for me.
- 13:48It's one of those moments, like clinical moments in my life, you
- 13:52know, yeah, where you know, it's like I never thought that would
- 13:56ever happen for me because it's like, yeah, you know, to work
- 13:58with Mutt Lane back in the day, you either have to be pay him
- 14:03millions of dollars or a big superstar, you know what I mean, And
- 14:09I'm none of us, you know what I mean? And well we did
- 14:13hear for he's the worst business man. I just get that call from here.
- 14:18It was one of those moments where I broke down and cried like a
- 14:20baby, yeah, because it was like when I was wrong, So I
- 14:22was like, oh wow, he thinks I have something. And that's that
- 14:26what that did for me. It made my whole life struggling being musician,
- 14:33and all of sudden then it's just I was like, you know what,
- 14:37I'm cool. Just thing ended tomorrow. Hey man, I got Mulin's validation.
- 14:41Yeah, I'm good. Yeah, you know, yeah, I still
- 14:50can't believe. I mean, I worked on still to this day, right,
- 14:52now I still work on songs all the time, you know what I
- 14:56mean. And it's incredible that and I'm grateful, so not only his friendship,
- 15:01but just him being like this our musical thing. When we go back
- 15:05and forth, it's incredible, And I could have a music like like he
- 15:09sent like I send him songs, so send him back to me, change
- 15:13him up, and we just keep on going back and forth. All of
- 15:16a sudden, we go all right, cool, we got yeah. And
- 15:18it takes sometimes like three months to do a song. It's not like we're
- 15:22sitting at banging the shit out like in a day. It's like we could
- 15:26do a song be like seventy versions of it. Yeah, like insanity.
- 15:30Like, So you gotta be when you're working with him, you got it.
- 15:35You can't be tied to anything. Number one, you can't go back.
- 15:39We don't listen to demos. We keep on moving forward, so you
- 15:43can never listen to what you just did on the last version. It's like,
- 15:48what are we doing today? How we get to how we get to
- 15:50the end. You know, it's amazing, it's amazing process. But I
- 15:54got to tell you, if you can't handle that, I don't have to
- 15:58tell you see I can handle it, you know what I mean, because
- 16:00I'm like, it makes me work hard, it makes me a better writer,
- 16:03it makes me a better arranger. And just from working with him and
- 16:07ol he's engineer, I've learned so much in the last five years that I
- 16:12spot a god you can't and then just making songs and arranging, producing and
- 16:18mixing and all these things. Yeah, d like you've done some of those
- 16:22yourself. Video we do all the video. Yeah. Yeah. I get
- 16:27this guy, guy Vicente, he shoots it, and then Anna and myself
- 16:32we edit it. Yeah. You just sit there and I love doing that
- 16:34stuff, you know what I mean, because it's like I was like,
- 16:38the first video we got some guy had and then I was like, going
- 16:42to figure out because you don't do myself. You know what you want to
- 16:47see, you know what I mean? And I'm going back and forth with
- 16:49this guy. The final is like going, you know what I'm done?
- 16:52Yeah, I said, next videos. I looked at Anna. I was
- 16:55like videos on YouTube, right, I was like, can you edit ship?
- 16:59She's like I think so listen, She's nineteen years old kid. So
- 17:04I was like, you know what, let's get whatever you needles buy whatever
- 17:07you need, let's try it and let's see if it works. So the
- 17:11first video we edited was a'm Unbreakable. Yeah. I looked at it.
- 17:15I was like, you know what, we could do this, And then
- 17:15we've been doing it ever since, Like we've done some video life even just
- 17:22watching it when like all the gang ark was kicking and I was like,
- 17:26it's so powerful. They even like just where it comes into the black and
- 17:29mot and I'm like, what is so? But I still want to stay
- 17:30it on top of the mountain. Yeah, but you know I'm making these
- 17:34videos, you know what I mean. I pay for myself. Yeah,
- 17:37I mean, like the lady was not paying for my I do it myself.
- 17:40So we have to keep in mind, like how do we make a
- 17:42video for like less than five thousand dollars. So it's like when I see
- 17:45people like commenting like oh, I'm like, well, they have no idea
- 17:51what it takes to even get it to this level and the money at the
- 17:55time and all these other things, you know, So I just sit back
- 17:56and do a lot of people don't say that without you know, when's your
- 18:00next video? When's this? And it's like as an artist, when you're
- 18:03on it. You're like, you know, you just look at one song,
- 18:07You're like, well, that's gonna be like six hours and then this
- 18:10it's like you gotta slow down. You can't do so many songs all at
- 18:11once. It takes a lot. But a lot of people don't say that.
- 18:15They don't know the process of it, you know what I mean,
- 18:18and the money that goes into it, the time and then editing videos.
- 18:22I mean we'll spend like sixty hours editing a video. Yeah that's like three
- 18:26minutes long. Yeah, you know there's a lot of work. Yeah,
- 18:30you're sitting there for hours on hours, you know, and you have to
- 18:33have patience. That's the one thing. It's all about. Patience. Yeah,
- 18:37when you go you gotta go through shots. That's not even included sixty
- 18:41hours of editing the video. Yeah, Like it takes me like three days
- 18:45to go through all the shots because I'll go through every fucking thing. I
- 18:48was like, like, there's one second there over here, we could use
- 18:53your face, one set, we got a guitar bit over here. Yeah,
- 18:56because that's whole thing too. When we're editing videos, I want to
- 19:00be musical, you know what i mean. So you know, when you
- 19:03hear that you see the person playing it, you know, because people here
- 19:06with the eyes. Yeah, so I think it's important to get that stuff,
- 19:11you know where it's like, oh, that's what's going on there.
- 19:14Yeah. So you've got the new song coming yeah. Yeah, that's gonna
- 19:19prem the twenty third ye and then money sets it. Uh. With the
- 19:26whole plan right now is after this sous Cooper tour. Yeah, we can
- 19:30set up shops in LA and host yeah, and then try and do like
- 19:34eight shows at the end of the year. Yeah. But I would love
- 19:37to come to Australia. I would probably think next year if we have some
- 19:41luck getting on a tour. Yeah. That's the It's the whole thing.
- 19:45It's like, you gotta have the record out. I'm like going, how
- 19:47can a tour with the record? Yeah? Yeah, it doesn't make any
- 19:51sense. Yeah, it's like, how about you put the record out there,
- 19:53let the people decide. Yeah, go on tour. Astralia. Want
- 19:59every part of the because it's so it's so driven, but it's like American
- 20:06Australian, Like it's every Australian rock his dreams to sound like an American rock
- 20:11band. You know, we can't you just can't nay always sound here.
- 20:15We try, We're going to travel to the other side of the world and
- 20:18work for producers to try and get this sound like you know what, we
- 20:22just don't do it like like the Americans sound. And then I'm just like
- 20:26these sounds Australian. And then that's when I'm like, you know, discovered
- 20:29all the A CD mom, and like when you were rehearsing and you know,
- 20:33they don't know if you're CAREA or not. And I was like,
- 20:34this is It's so cool, Like I think this is what our country has
- 20:37been waiting for. Sorry, yeah, that's like that's I hear that.
- 20:44I don't want to listen to what I'm listening to on the mainstream radio here,
- 20:48like it doesn't belong here. We want prospers straight up. Yeah,
- 20:53And it's cool because it's like the only picture I wanted a band. I
- 20:56wanted to have girls in the band because for hours, you know, when
- 21:00you put in the band. Yeah, I thought that was really cool and
- 21:04uh, watching it, I was like, oh, you know what,
- 21:07I think it'd be cool to have like a bunch of like really cool chicks,
- 21:11curly girls. I'm talking about chicks. Yeah, tough where they could
- 21:15hang with dudes and hang with chicks and at the same time. Why well
- 21:19yes, you know, and I wanted to find young people. Yeah,
