Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Skubal trade talk update, Trade Deadline Buyers & Sellers, Harper's front office beef?
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with my friend Alana Rizzo, and it
- 0:13Speaker 1: is trade time. It is deadline time. We had a
- 0:16Speaker 1: deal last night. Interesting deal for the Texas Rangers. They
- 0:19Speaker 1: get the reliever Chase Silseth and the catcher Logan O
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hoppy for prospect who was pretty much unknown, Angel Arendondo.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Didn't appear on any top list. Doesn't mean he can't play.
- 0:29Speaker 1: We'll see. But Alana, we've got a lot to get
- 0:33Speaker 1: to today. We've got Trek Scouble, We've got the Phillies mess.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We've got a ton of things that we need to discuss.
- 0:39Speaker 2: And one of the things Ken, good to be with
- 0:41Speaker 2: you is always on this Thursday. Is one of the
- 0:43Speaker 2: things to discuss is why the Tigers decided to call
- 0:47Speaker 2: up top prospect and outfielder of Max Clark.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Tell me more about him.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Well, this was really interesting, Alana. He's one of the
- 0:54Speaker 1: top prospects in the game. And when I first heard
- 0:57Speaker 1: the news, my impression was, Okay, they're gonna cushion the
- 1:01Speaker 1: blow here. So when they start trading off guys, at
- 1:03Speaker 1: least their fans can get excited about Max Clark coming
- 1:06Speaker 1: to the majors. But what seems to me that is
- 1:10Speaker 1: going on here is that they've got a potential injury
- 1:13Speaker 1: with Matt Verling in center. He might be an il,
- 1:17Speaker 1: might not be. They've got Javi or Baiaz they can
- 1:20Speaker 1: play in center, but they like to use him in
- 1:21Speaker 1: the infield too. So they see Clark as one of
- 1:24Speaker 1: the top prospects in the game. They see him as
- 1:26Speaker 1: a guy who can help them right now. What's curious
- 1:29Speaker 1: is he was not even Rule five eligible. He doesn't
- 1:32Speaker 1: have to be added to the forty man roster. But
- 1:35Speaker 1: at that same time, it seemed like he was the
- 1:37Speaker 1: kind of guy who was inevitably going to be called
- 1:40Speaker 1: up at some point. So they're thinking, is why do
- 1:42Speaker 1: it now? I'm told it's not related to the deadline.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I guess you could make that case. But if you
- 1:48Speaker 1: start trading off guys and you start getting controllable pieces
- 1:52Speaker 1: back too, which maybe they can do in a schooble trade,
- 1:56Speaker 1: the argument would be, look, we're different, we're pretend weaker,
- 2:00Speaker 1: but we're still going to try to get a playoff spot.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Ken When you think about the Detroit Tigers on top
- 2:06Speaker 2: of everyone's mind right now, is Tarek Schouble, no disrespect,
- 2:09Speaker 2: it is not Max Clark. But everything going on, the
- 2:12Speaker 2: standing ovation, the emotions coming off of the hill yesterday
- 2:16Speaker 2: for Trek Schouble and perhaps what is his last start
- 2:19Speaker 2: as a Tiger, everything seems to be pointing to a trade.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Is that fair?
- 2:25Speaker 1: That is entirely fair, And there's always a percentage chance
- 2:29Speaker 1: that the Tigers don't get what they want and don't
- 2:32Speaker 1: move him. I have a really hard time believing that's
- 2:35Speaker 1: going to be the case. And given the way the
- 2:37Speaker 1: team is played, you can't count on this club being
- 2:41Speaker 1: a World Series type contender. Yesterday was a classic example
- 2:44Speaker 1: kind of the season. In summary, bullpenblow is a seven
- 2:47Speaker 1: to nothing lead after Schoolble was brilliant again and the
- 2:51Speaker 1: Tigers just cannot get out of their way. The team
- 2:53Speaker 1: they played, the Oriols in a similar circumstance, often cannot
- 2:57Speaker 1: get out of their way. Someone had to win that
- 2:59Speaker 1: game yesterday. But with Scooble, what you have are the
- 3:04Speaker 1: Milwaukee Brewers, the Tampa Bay Rays, the Los Angeles Dodgers,
- 3:08Speaker 1: potentially the New York Yankees, potentially the Chicago Cubs. Actually.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Patrick Mooney of The Athletic writing this morning that the
- 3:15Speaker 1: Cubs are in on this. You have just so much
- 3:19Speaker 1: demand and a great possibility of doing something that will
- 3:23Speaker 1: help your team now and in the future. And that
- 3:26Speaker 1: is my expectation of what the Tigers will do.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And certainly the Detroit Tigers want everybody to be in
- 3:32Speaker 2: on Tarrek's school, not just the Cubs. And as you
- 3:35Speaker 2: mentioned Patrick Mooney saying that the Cubs are emerging as
- 3:38Speaker 2: a candidate. The Dodgers, as we've talked about, how they
- 3:41Speaker 2: have the player talent to get it done, but will
- 3:43Speaker 2: they need to as Blake Snell and Tyler glasnow are
- 3:47Speaker 2: making their ways back from injury. Does Terrek's schooble make
- 3:49Speaker 2: sense for la as a rental.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I wrote about this yesterday, Alana, and the truthful answer
- 3:55Speaker 1: there is only the Dodgers know. We don't know exactly
- 4:00Speaker 1: what is going on with show Hey, the knee, the biceps.
- 4:04Speaker 1: They say he's going to pitch again. You have to
- 4:06Speaker 1: take them at their word until he doesn't. But at
- 4:09Speaker 1: the same time, as I wrote, this is what they're
- 4:12Speaker 1: going to say if there's even a point oh one
- 4:15Speaker 1: chance that he won't pitch again, They're never going to
- 4:18Speaker 1: admit it, because of course that would compromise leverage in
- 4:22Speaker 1: any trade for a starting pitcher, whether it's Turrek Scubel
- 4:25Speaker 1: or even someone like a Clay Holmes. So there's a
- 4:29Speaker 1: bit of mystery there. There's always going to be mystery
- 4:31Speaker 1: with the health of Snell and Glass now because those
- 4:34Speaker 1: guys don't stay healthy. And then with Show, Hey, yes,
- 4:38Speaker 1: the anticipation is he will pitch again, But do we
- 4:41Speaker 1: know this for sure. We don't know that for sure.
- 4:43Speaker 1: So they might be more of a factor for schoolbl
- 4:47Speaker 1: than previously thought. And of all the teams, they have
- 4:52Speaker 1: not just a deep farm system, because the Brewers have
- 4:54Speaker 1: that and the Rays have that, and even the Braves
- 4:57Speaker 1: arguably have that. They have the financial wherewithal, and they
- 5:01Speaker 1: have an unusual motivation, the idea of a three p
- 5:05Speaker 1: Now the Rays and Brewers have never won a World Series.
- 5:09Speaker 1: That's motivation. But at the same time, the Dodgers, as
- 5:12Speaker 1: we've seen, will flex, will bully the rest of the league,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and I anticipate that that is going to be a
- 5:20Speaker 1: real possibility.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Here. You had mentioned the Brewers, Ken they're in the mix,
- 5:25Speaker 2: the Braves there in the mix.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Do the Brewers make the most sense?
- 5:28Speaker 2: A rotation headed by Trek Scooble, them Is and Jacob Izarowski.
- 5:32Speaker 2: A healthy Kyle Harrison that could be tough to beat.
- 5:35Speaker 2: The Brewers are the real deal, certainly leading the NL Central,
- 5:38Speaker 2: always a perennial contender. They just need to get further
- 5:41Speaker 2: into the postseason.
- 5:43Speaker 1: They've always made San Salana. Now the question for the
- 5:46Speaker 1: Brewers and the question for the Rays. And you can
- 5:48Speaker 1: make the same argument with the Rays. Rasmussen, Martinez, McClanahan
- 5:53Speaker 1: plus Schooble, that's pretty good. The question for both these
- 5:57Speaker 1: teams is for a rental, would they be link to
- 6:00Speaker 1: trade big prospects from their system? And in the Brewers case,
- 6:05Speaker 1: they have depth in their system beyond most teams. They
- 6:08Speaker 1: have the number one prospect in the game, Hazus Monday.
- 6:11Speaker 1: He's not going to go in a Schoobal deal, but
- 6:14Speaker 1: they have players behind him. They are backed up pretty
- 6:16Speaker 1: good with prospects. The Rays maybe not quite as deep,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but they've got a good system too. The question is
- 6:25Speaker 1: would they do it now. Historically the Rays have played
- 6:28Speaker 1: on guys like this. They tried to get Otani back
- 6:31Speaker 1: in twenty three. The Brewers don't really like trading for rentals.
- 6:36Speaker 1: It's not their thing. You can make the case, and
- 6:39Speaker 1: I have made the case that this should be C. C.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Sabbatia Part two, where you make that deal and you
- 6:45Speaker 1: take your shot. I just don't know if ultimately they
- 6:49Speaker 1: will have the stomach for it. Maybe they will, and
- 6:51Speaker 1: good for them if they do. Same for the Rays,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but it's a little bit of a different equation with
- 6:56Speaker 1: those teams, and I just don't know that arding with
- 7:00Speaker 1: the premium young talent it's going to take, they're going
- 7:03Speaker 1: to have enough of an appetite for it in the end.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Ken, looking at our chat right now, Love's eighty six
- 7:09Speaker 2: ninety six, seems to think the Braves don't trade for rentals.
- 7:12Speaker 2: They don't think they can resign. Not happening, So that
- 7:15Speaker 2: being said, to be clear, this will be a rental.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I believe he is a Scott Boris client, Trek scooble Is,
- 7:21Speaker 2: and Scott Boris will always take his players to free agency.
- 7:25Speaker 2: This is just for August, September, October and hopefully longer
- 7:29Speaker 2: into the postseason.
- 7:31Speaker 1: No question, And the Braves historically have not done that.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And you can't assume with Scott Boris as Schoobls agent
- 7:39Speaker 1: that you'll have an inside track on resigning him. Yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 1: it would help you get him comfortable in your environment.
- 7:45Speaker 1: But in the end, it comes down the money, money, money,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and that's it. So I understand the argument that person
- 7:52Speaker 1: is making. But the Braves are going to be in
- 7:54Speaker 1: this mix and they're going to try like these other
- 7:56Speaker 1: teams are going to try. Now, maybe they won't have
- 7:59Speaker 1: the stomach for it in the end, but certainly when
- 8:02Speaker 1: you've got a picture of this caliber available. We're talking
- 8:05Speaker 1: about the back to back reigning American League so young winner.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yes he's a rental, Yes it might only be two
- 8:11Speaker 1: plus months, but.
- 8:12Speaker 3: You try absolutely much more to come.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Everyone's thinking about the trade deadline about a week away
- 8:18Speaker 2: on August the third. More trade deadline coverage is coming
- 8:21Speaker 2: up right after.
- 8:22Speaker 4: This big second half of the season coming up. There

- 9:45Speaker 2: lock it in. If your bet hits, you're catching out
- 9:48Speaker 2: with an even bigger payout gambling problem called one eight
- 9:51Speaker 2: hundred gambler or one eight hundred my reset. The Terrade
- 9:56Speaker 2: deadline conversation continues. Let's start with the Philadelphia Phillies, Ken,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and we'll get into the whole Bryce Harper and Don
- 10:03Speaker 2: Manningly thing in a moment. But are the Phillies another
- 10:06Speaker 2: team in the mix for the services of Teik Schooble.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I am quite certain Dave Dombrowski would love to get
- 10:13Speaker 1: his hands on Schooble. I just don't see the Phillies
- 10:17Speaker 1: having enough to do it. And they have other needs
- 10:19Speaker 1: to particularly in their outfield and bullpen. So this is
- 10:23Speaker 1: not a team with a great farm system. I know
- 10:25Speaker 1: Dombrowski told me last week. Teams want our players. I'm
- 10:29Speaker 1: sure they do, but teams want other clubs players more.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I'm talking about prospects. So I don't see them being
- 10:36Speaker 1: a serious player for Schooble.
- 10:38Speaker 2: All right, Ken, So if there is any team in
- 10:40Speaker 2: the National League that gets Schooble, are they automatically the
- 10:44Speaker 2: favorite in the NL? Or does that always belong to
- 10:46Speaker 2: the Dodgers, just because of the pedigree and their current roster.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I would still say the Dodgers would be the favorite.
- 10:52Speaker 1: But if the Brewers got him, or the Braves for
- 10:55Speaker 1: that matter, or the Cubs, they'd be quite interesting as
- 10:59Speaker 1: a threat, and that would be something that would be
- 11:02Speaker 1: a potential game changer in the National League. So yeah,
- 11:07Speaker 1: that would change the odds considerably. And if the Dodgers
- 11:09Speaker 1: get him, obviously their odds go up.
- 11:12Speaker 2: To no question, he makes any team better, regardless of
- 11:16Speaker 2: what league he ends up being in. Let's talk again
- 11:18Speaker 2: about the Bryce Harper and Don Mattingly situation. There was
- 11:22Speaker 2: a quote in part of Bryce Harper saying, I think
- 11:25Speaker 2: we need some help. Maddingly then responded, when you say
- 11:28Speaker 2: something about our team, then you're saying something about one
- 11:30Speaker 2: of our players that you don't like. Ken, What should
- 11:33Speaker 2: we make of this?
- 11:35Speaker 1: All right? A lota? First of all, this goes back
- 11:38Speaker 1: to the end of last season when Dave Dombrowski kind
- 11:42Speaker 1: of called out Bryce Harper challenged said he's still a
- 11:46Speaker 1: really good player, but he did not have an elite season,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and we'll see if he can become a lead again.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I'm paraphrasing. Harper of course heard that was not happy
- 11:55Speaker 1: about it. And when he said the other day we
- 11:59Speaker 1: need help. To me that was revenge. Might be a
- 12:03Speaker 1: strong word, but that was his pushback. And that's where
- 12:07Speaker 1: this whole thing kind of started. That's the genesis of
- 12:11Speaker 1: it now. Maddingly calling out Bryce Harper for what he said.
- 12:16Speaker 1: That was interesting too. One of the things Mattingly said
- 12:19Speaker 1: is players always think they can spend the team's money
- 12:22Speaker 1: something to that effect. Well, who is the general manager
- 12:25Speaker 1: of the Phillies under Dave Debrowski. Maddingly's done, Preston Mattingly.
- 12:29Speaker 1: So this whole saga with the Phillies, it has turned
- 12:33Speaker 1: into something of a soap opera. They're not playing well
- 12:36Speaker 1: right now, and I expect Dave Dombrowski is going to
- 12:40Speaker 1: go out and get them help. But this simmering thing
- 12:43Speaker 1: between Dombrowski and Harper, as Matt gil wrote today in
- 12:47Speaker 1: The Athletic, at some point they've got to work it out.
- 12:50Speaker 1: It's not a healthy thing for the franchise.
- 12:53Speaker 2: So let me ask you this, then, Ken, what do
- 12:56Speaker 2: the Phillies need to do to improve? Because the one
- 12:59Speaker 2: thing out of all of this that I take away
- 13:01Speaker 2: is what do they need to do to solidify a
- 13:05Speaker 2: postseason spot and get deeper into the postseason.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Well, the outfield is the principal area that they would
- 13:12Speaker 1: need to address. Their outfield is performing basically a historically
- 13:16Speaker 1: low level for their franchise, and that's not good. So
- 13:21Speaker 1: the bat in the outfield would be number one, probably
- 13:24Speaker 1: right handed. Beyond that, the loss of Brad Keller certainly
- 13:29Speaker 1: hurt their bullpen. They could use another reliever and maybe
- 13:32Speaker 1: even a back end starter because they don't know what
- 13:36Speaker 1: Andrew Painter might be giving them if they bring him
- 13:39Speaker 1: back from Triple A. They have had an issue with
- 13:42Speaker 1: the number five spot all season. To me, that's not
- 13:45Speaker 1: as big a priority because in the postseason you're not
- 13:47Speaker 1: going to use a number five starter. But you could
- 13:51Speaker 1: look at it this way too. Let's say you go
- 13:53Speaker 1: out and get a quality starter better than a number five,
- 13:57Speaker 1: then in the postseason you can put one of your starters,
- 14:00Speaker 1: probably Lozardo, in the bullpen and address the bullpen that way.
- 14:03Speaker 1: So that is an avenue that the Phillies could pursue
- 14:07Speaker 1: beyond simply kind of the paint by number. We need
- 14:10Speaker 1: a nowfielder, we need a bullpen gue they could get
- 14:12Speaker 1: creative and look for that quality starting pitcher as well.
- 14:16Speaker 2: All right, switching from the Phillies to a team in
- 14:18Speaker 2: the American League and the Boston Red Sox, unlucky for
- 14:21Speaker 2: Curtis Mead just got over there. They traded Connolly early away.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Curtis Mead injured after just one game, fractured rez stepper
- 14:29Speaker 2: he was hit by a pitch. So once again the
- 14:31Speaker 2: Red Sox need to fill the shortstop void. Now, Trevor
- 14:35Speaker 2: Story is due to come back, but that may not
- 14:37Speaker 2: be enough. You don't know what you're going to get
- 14:39Speaker 2: coming off of the il, and he hasn't been that
- 14:41Speaker 2: productive this season.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Where do the Red Sox go from here?
- 14:45Speaker 1: They do need another infielder, and it is a shame
- 14:48Speaker 1: what happened with me awful really first game with his
- 14:51Speaker 1: new team and he gets injured. I'm not sure exactly
- 14:56Speaker 1: how the Red Sox are going to come out of this,
- 14:58Speaker 1: what they're going to come out of it with, but
- 14:59Speaker 1: it seems like they're going to do something for sure,
- 15:02Speaker 1: and there are infielders out there. Miami's got a few
- 15:05Speaker 1: for starters. Zach Netto with the Angels, CJ Abrams with
- 15:08Speaker 1: the Nationals. All these guys could be in play now
- 15:12Speaker 1: if they got a shortstop, If that was what they
- 15:15Speaker 1: settled on. It becomes a bit of a question with story.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Who has another year left after this year? But I'm
- 15:20Speaker 1: not sure they can worry about that right now. Offensively,
- 15:23Speaker 1: they're struggling a bit and they need a little bit
- 15:26Speaker 1: of a boost the books that Mead was intended to
- 15:29Speaker 1: give them, So I expect them to still be active
- 15:33Speaker 1: and maybe quite interesting with what they do, no question
- 15:37Speaker 1: about that.
- 15:37Speaker 2: What a weird couple of weeks or three weeks that
- 15:39Speaker 2: has been for the Boston Red Sox. Okay, a team
- 15:42Speaker 2: not named you know, the Tigers. What are the teams
- 15:47Speaker 2: to watch or who should we be paying attention to
- 15:50Speaker 2: between now and the six pm deadline the trade deadline
- 15:53Speaker 2: on Monday.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Honestly a lot. I could list all thirty, but let's
- 15:58Speaker 1: start with the Padres. The Padres are always a team
- 16:01Speaker 1: to watch and is quite interesting what is going on
- 16:04Speaker 1: with them. They've won five straight now, granted is over
- 16:07Speaker 1: a struggling Miami team in Colorado, but suddenly after jumping
- 16:12Speaker 1: four teams, they're only a game and a half out
- 16:15Speaker 1: in the wildcard race. So all this talk of Mason
- 16:18Speaker 1: Miller and Adrian Morroyhan getting traded could happen, particularly Moray
- 16:23Speaker 1: Hone's case because he's a potential free agent. But aj
- 16:26Speaker 1: Preller what governs him always is an intense desire to win.
- 16:31Speaker 1: He's not going backwards. So under these circumstances, while they
- 16:36Speaker 1: are entertaining everything, as all teams do at this time
- 16:39Speaker 1: of year, it's becoming increasingly difficult to see them trading
- 16:43Speaker 1: the best closer in the game when they are finally
- 16:47Speaker 1: playing like the team that they envisioned from the start
- 16:50Speaker 1: of the season. So aj Preller always someone to watch
- 16:53Speaker 1: in these circumstances. We see this every single deadline. Seattle
- 16:58Speaker 1: Mariners another team that is quite interesting. Now I've written
- 17:01Speaker 1: about the possibility of them trading a starting pitcher. It
- 17:04Speaker 1: could be Emerson Hancock, could be Louis Castillo. They want
- 17:08Speaker 1: to get a right handed bat, they want to get
- 17:10Speaker 1: a leverage reliever, and they have not played well at all.
- 17:14Speaker 1: It's almost as if they don't justify much further investment.
- 17:18Speaker 1: But they're not going to give up. At a time
- 17:21Speaker 1: when they fall into third place in the NL West,
- 17:23Speaker 1: behind both the Rangers and Astros, They're still in the mix,
- 17:26Speaker 1: still two and a half out in both the division
- 17:29Speaker 1: and wildcard races. And they've put a lot into this team.
- 17:33Speaker 1: But that is a GM right now, a president base
- 17:36Speaker 1: co Operations Jerry Depoto, who is under some pressure to
- 17:40Speaker 1: kind of fix this thing. They fired their third hitting coach,
- 17:43Speaker 1: the number three hitting coach that didn't get it done.
- 17:46Speaker 1: So that's going to be an interesting team to watch,
- 17:49Speaker 1: and of course the Dodgers are always a fascinating club
- 17:55Speaker 1: to observe. Will they do something big or will they
- 17:58Speaker 1: settle for smaller moves? Eric Lower really well again last night.
- 18:02Speaker 1: He could be traded. Alex call could be traded. They
- 18:04Speaker 1: have some excess on the major league roster with TK
- 18:08Speaker 1: coming back and with the pitching that they have. So
- 18:12Speaker 1: those are just three teams. We could talk, of course,
- 18:15Speaker 1: all night and all day about each of these clubs
- 18:18Speaker 1: because at the deadline it's the last transactional period until
- 18:22Speaker 1: the offseason, and that's why it is so hectic.
- 18:25Speaker 2: What's crazy too, if you look at the al Wes
- 18:27Speaker 2: that you were just talking about, Ken, only the Seattle
- 18:30Speaker 2: Mariners have a positive run differential at plus seven.
- 18:35Speaker 3: That's it, just plus seven.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Everybody else is negative in terms of runs scored versus
- 18:40Speaker 2: runs given up. All Right, as we stand here just
- 18:43Speaker 2: a few days away from the trade deadline, what is
- 18:45Speaker 2: the most up to date unofficial, of course, list of
- 18:48Speaker 2: deadline sellers that have the talent to move. These are
- 18:52Speaker 2: definitive sellers of guys that you know are going to
- 18:55Speaker 2: certainly not be there after August third.
- 18:57Speaker 1: All right, the Angels are top of the list. They've
- 18:59Speaker 1: got They've got Soriano, they've got Netto. They made a
- 19:02Speaker 1: trade last night. As I wrote today, how far will
- 19:06Speaker 1: John Mosela go as interim GM. It's one of the
- 19:09Speaker 1: fascinating questions of this deadline. San Francisco Giants, we know
- 19:12Speaker 1: they're selling, Luisa Ryes, Robbie Ray, the Mets. I've set
- 19:16Speaker 1: the over under it's six trades for them. It could
- 19:19Speaker 1: be more. They've got a number of expiring contracts. Freddy Peralta,
- 19:22Speaker 1: Clay Holmes, aj Minter Brooks, Raley, Tyrone Taylor, on and
- 19:26Speaker 1: on and on, Luise Robert Jr. The Blue Jays. Someone
- 19:30Speaker 1: mentioned to me this morning, if they have a good
- 19:33Speaker 1: weekend against the Cardinals, would they really sell? I guess
- 19:37Speaker 1: that remains to be seen. Five and a half games
- 19:39Speaker 1: back in the wildcard race the Royals, but they seem
- 19:41Speaker 1: mostly intent on trading guys on expiring contracts, not Michael
- 19:45Speaker 1: waka the Rockies. I've written about Hunter Goodman quite a bit,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and the Cincinnati Reds wrote about them today as well.
- 19:52Speaker 1: They're getting hit on Hunter green quite a bit. Now
- 19:54Speaker 1: They've got a number of potential free agents that they
- 19:57Speaker 1: are going to move. Those guys will bring much of
- 20:00Speaker 1: an impact back Hunter green Wood.
- 20:03Speaker 3: That's a funny conversation.
- 20:04Speaker 2: As I look in our chat too, somebody was asking
- 20:07Speaker 2: if they should hold off on the Hunter Goodman Rockies jersey.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you should.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I don't know that that Hunter Goodman is going to
- 20:13Speaker 2: be in a Rockies uniform come August fourth. All right,
- 20:16Speaker 2: much more to come here on Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal,
- 20:20Speaker 2: But first a word from our phone at Foul Territory.
- 20:24Speaker 2: There's one place to be you guys on trade deadline,
- 20:27Speaker 2: and that is watching Foul Territory. A. J. Pierzinski, Eric Kratz,
- 20:31Speaker 2: and Scott Brown will be live all afternoon long, speaking
- 20:35Speaker 2: with insiders, reading the tea leaves, if you will, and
- 20:38Speaker 2: reacting to unfolding deadline drama. Join us on the Foul
- 20:42Speaker 2: Territory YouTube channel at one pm Eastern and stay locked
- 20:46Speaker 2: in through the six pm deadline. So these guys are
- 20:49Speaker 2: going to be working on Monday Foul Territory Network. It's
- 20:52Speaker 2: baseball the way it should be covered. Okay, Grill and
- 20:55Speaker 2: Ken is coming up, but let's preview Ken's Saturday game
- 20:59Speaker 2: on Fox with it is streaming now. Now, Ken, you
- 21:03Speaker 2: are going to be doing Yankees at Cubs on Saturday
- 21:06Speaker 2: on Fox. This is interesting though, because you are so
- 21:10Speaker 2: locked in on the trade deadline, as you have been
- 21:12Speaker 2: for quite some time, but you still are responsible for
- 21:15Speaker 2: doing the game on Saturday. How do you prepare for both?
- 21:18Speaker 2: What takes your interest?
- 21:21Speaker 1: Well, the deadline takes priority now, and the reason for that,
- 21:25Speaker 1: obviously is that's what everyone wants to talk about, what
- 21:27Speaker 1: everyone wants to know about. That said, we are broadcasting
- 21:30Speaker 1: a game now. Usually when I am part of a broadcast,
- 21:34Speaker 1: I'll prepare beforehand, maybe fifteen to twenty topics solely related
- 21:38Speaker 1: to those two teams, and we'll pick some of them
- 21:41Speaker 1: during the broadcast. Maybe we'll pick none of them and
- 21:43Speaker 1: talk about entirely other things. But that's my prep for
- 21:47Speaker 1: this game. I'm not going to do that much, or
- 21:49Speaker 1: at least to that extent, maybe something on each of
- 21:52Speaker 1: the starting pitchers. I'll have already something like that. We'll
- 21:56Speaker 1: be deadline focused. We'll be deadline focused on the Yankees
- 21:58Speaker 1: and Cubs and everything else going on in the sport.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I imagine it's quite possible a trade or two will
- 22:04Speaker 1: happen during the broadcast, and hopefully I'll be ready to
- 22:08Speaker 1: talk about that. So it's different for sure, doing a
- 22:12Speaker 1: broadcast with the deadline two days away. Not the most
- 22:15Speaker 1: comfortable feeling for me.
- 22:16Speaker 3: But we're going to do it all right.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And as I said in our production meeting, just keep
- 22:21Speaker 2: your head on a swivel, because I don't want you just,
- 22:22Speaker 2: you know, looking into your phone and then getting getting
- 22:25Speaker 2: hit by a ball or something like that. So pay attention,
- 22:28Speaker 2: be careful on that. MLB on Fox is streaming on
- 22:31Speaker 2: Fox one. The Race to October starts now, and we
- 22:34Speaker 2: have your front row seat to the wildest walk offs,
- 22:37Speaker 2: lights out pitching, and clutch plays all season long. Follow
- 22:40Speaker 2: every can't miss matchup as teams battle for a spot
- 22:44Speaker 2: in the postseason. Then stream the twenty twenty six World
- 22:47Speaker 2: Series live on Fox One at home or on the
- 22:51Speaker 2: go live or on demand, never miss a moment stream. Now,
- 23:00Speaker 2: all right, we welcome you to get your questions in
- 23:03Speaker 2: for Ken Rosenthal on this episode of Grill and Ken.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I have seen a lot of great questions already in
- 23:08Speaker 2: the chat marvisl ten Ken, do you agree with Jim
- 23:12Speaker 2: Bowden that the Red Sox should stay on the phone
- 23:15Speaker 2: with moseay Lock until they get zach Netto.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I don't agree with that, and certainly there are other
- 23:22Speaker 1: options as well. Zach Nanto is an interesting player, but
- 23:26Speaker 1: it's not like he's Troy Tilowitzky and his prime To
- 23:30Speaker 1: give one example of a deadline shortstop deal, zach Netto,
- 23:35Speaker 1: I'm not even sure he will be moved. And the
- 23:37Speaker 1: Red Sox, I know, I see this among their fans
- 23:40Speaker 1: and their bloggers. Oh my gosh, we can't trade Franklin Aarius.
- 23:44Speaker 1: He's our number one prospect. Well, I will say this
- 23:47Speaker 1: about the Red Sox and their prospects. Kristin Campbell couldn't
- 23:51Speaker 1: trade him, heaven forbid. Ryan Bao couldn't trade him heaven forbid.
- 23:55Speaker 1: And I can give you other examples as well. Tristan
- 23:58Speaker 1: Cassis slow down. Now, Harrius is really highly regarded of
- 24:03Speaker 1: course and looks to be another good major league player.
- 24:07Speaker 1: But again Marcelo Mayer another one. Has he panned out yet? No,
- 24:13Speaker 1: So for the right player, I would have Franklin Arius
- 24:17Speaker 1: in play. That's my point here.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt about that.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Wicked Better fifty four question for you, Ken, who is
- 24:23Speaker 2: one player that you could see being traded that nobody
- 24:25Speaker 2: saw coming O'Neil Cruz, Vinny P, Tyler or Vivp obviously
- 24:29Speaker 2: past Quentino, Tyler, Soderstrom just to name a few, or
- 24:32Speaker 2: somebody else altogether.
- 24:34Speaker 3: No putting you on the spot there, right, no big deal.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Wicked Better is asking the right question. But if I
- 24:41Speaker 1: had an idea of who this player might be, then
- 24:45Speaker 1: we would see it coming. So I don't know who
- 24:48Speaker 1: that might be. Now. What I want to mention here, though,
- 24:51Speaker 1: is what that person wicked Better is suggesting is a
- 24:57Speaker 1: very good point. Something is going to hap And I
- 25:00Speaker 1: say this every year. You guys probably get tired of
- 25:02Speaker 1: me saying it. Something is going to happen. It's going
- 25:05Speaker 1: to make our head spin. Some player we don't anticipate
- 25:08Speaker 1: getting moved is going to get moved. And I'm not
- 25:11Speaker 1: going to make any predictions. My job is to report,
- 25:14Speaker 1: not make predictions. But that is a safe thing to
- 25:17Speaker 1: say something's going to happen, that's going.
- 25:19Speaker 2: To shock us, all right, Daniel Doctor, nineteen nineteen with
- 25:23Speaker 2: the super chat, we appreciate that very much. What are
- 25:25Speaker 2: the biggest differences that you notice a difference in covering
- 25:28Speaker 2: teams daily as a beat reporter versus now covering them nationally.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Well, it's been a long time since I was a
- 25:36Speaker 1: beat as a beat reporter from nineteen eighty seven to
- 25:39Speaker 1: ninety covering the Baltimore Orioles for a paper that no
- 25:42Speaker 1: longer exists, the Baltimore Evening Sun. But generally speaking, I
- 25:47Speaker 1: can answer this. When you're a beat reporter, you're focused
- 25:50Speaker 1: on your team and everything surrounding your team, from the
- 25:54Speaker 1: major league club to the farm system, anything and everything
- 25:58Speaker 1: that revolves around your team, and that is your one
- 26:02Speaker 1: thousand percent attention. It's on that. As a national reporter,
- 26:07Speaker 1: I'm responsible for all thirty and kind of knowing what
- 26:11Speaker 1: is going on with all thirty. Now, some teams I'm
- 26:13Speaker 1: a stronger on than others. You're not going to write
- 26:15Speaker 1: about certain teams as much as others either, But that's
- 26:19Speaker 1: the biggest difference it's this broader perspective that you have
- 26:22Speaker 1: to have as opposed to the narrow. Hey man, I'm
- 26:26Speaker 1: locked in on every single detail of what's going on
- 26:29Speaker 1: with this club.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Yeah, very different muscles that you are flexing and exercising,
- 26:33Speaker 2: depending upon if you are regional versus national. Final question
- 26:37Speaker 2: here on Grill and Ken Dan Breen eighty two ninety nine.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Does school will have to be the first domino to
- 26:43Speaker 2: fall before other small deals get done? Scott Harris seems
- 26:47Speaker 2: to always wait until the last second to deal.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Well, it's a good question because a lot of times
- 26:53Speaker 1: you will hear both in free agency and at trade
- 26:56Speaker 1: time at the deadline, Oh, this guy's holding up the
- 27:00Speaker 1: whole market. We can't have other trades until this guy
- 27:02Speaker 1: gets moved. And to some extent, I am sure that
- 27:05Speaker 1: dynamic will be in play with Scooble. But Scott Harris
- 27:09Speaker 1: has every right to wait. As long as he wants
- 27:12Speaker 1: to make this trade. He can make it at three
- 27:15Speaker 1: point fifty nine whatever. The deadline is five point fifty
- 27:17Speaker 1: nine Eastern on Monday, and it's just too bad that
- 27:21Speaker 1: he's got to do what's best for his team and
- 27:23Speaker 1: the other teams at some point the team's trading other
- 27:26Speaker 1: starting pitchers, the Peraltas, the Robbie Rays, all of the
- 27:29Speaker 1: guys you've heard in the mix. They've got to act.
- 27:32Speaker 1: And yeah, certainly Scooba will complicate it because the team's
- 27:36Speaker 1: pursuing him, will be focused on him. But at some time,
- 27:40Speaker 1: and the beauty of the deadline is that at some
- 27:42Speaker 1: point everyone's got to make a decision and all the
- 27:45Speaker 1: posturing and all the bs has to stop.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Well, just make sure your fax machines are working. People.
- 27:52Speaker 3: If you're old enough like us, you understand that joke.
- 27:54Speaker 3: All right, that's it for us.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal. We appreciate you guys being here.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Foul Territories coming up next. A. J. Pierzinski, Eric Kratz,
- 28:03Speaker 2: and Scott Brown, of course, Hodey Castillo, Jim Duquette, Scott Spiezio.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Joining the show.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Ken is back on Tuesday, remember, guys, Tuesday, with all
- 28:11Speaker 2: the trade deadline reactions, we appreciate you being here.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Ken.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Good luck, We'll see you next time.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Thanks A Lota
