- 0:01Listen. I know it's going to be quick, and he's on a tight
- 0:03schedule. When he when before he even says hello, he taps his watch.
- 0:08That you didn't but no, I was just doing that because we're both
- 0:11wearing roll ex I know, dude. Yeah, but yours is probably nicer
- 0:14than mine. No, the black sobs, that's the that's the staple,
- 0:17dude, Right, yeah, hanging with hardy. Dude, how's life good?
- 0:21It doesn't slow down for you ever? No, a little bit?
- 0:24Maybe not really though, dude. There's a million things I want to catch
- 0:29up on, But first hit me with you just played with the Houston Rodeo.
- 0:32Yeah, literally like a few days ago, and you brought your wife
- 0:36with to look like she had the time of her life. Right, yeah,
- 0:38But tell me about that experience for you, because the Houston Rodeo is
- 0:41a big deal and a regular country music fan sitting here in Nashville might not
- 0:45realize that. How how how authentic can this conversation be? Be right?
- 0:51Right, there's a lot of I got a lot of well, actually,
- 0:54the every article I read was really good. But they they the day of
- 0:58the show, they told me that I couldn't cuss or we had to cut
- 1:03a song from the set. I couldn't wear a jersey with the number sixty
- 1:06nine on it. Of course, if my mom's listening, she's like,
- 1:08thank god, that's what they still said. But it's about time. But
- 1:12so we I kind of felt like I handled it with grace, but I
- 1:15had some I had a moment where maybe that I convinced the entire crowd to
- 1:19say that F word just to see what would happened. But it was amazing.
- 1:25The experience was amazing. I'm incredibly grateful to even be considered like at
- 1:30the same level or whatever you want to call it as the other people that
- 1:33played there. And the experience was awesome. In the stage, like move
- 1:37moves in a circle. Yeah, and you go out on these like octopus
- 1:40legs and they'll go up and it's dude, it was wild. It was
- 1:42the coolest show I've ever played. What's it like for somebody who you're very
- 1:47much out there but because of your rock and country, you know, delivery,
- 1:53you're still introducing yourself to new fans every day. Yeah, but the
- 1:56fans that you have are rabbit and there's a ton of them, and that's
- 1:57obviously why you played a show like that. So what's it like when someone's
- 2:00like, hey, you gotta park and not that like you're built on cussing
- 2:06on stage, but like being authentic is a part of you, right yeah,
- 2:08yeah yeah, And so what was that like for them to be like,
- 2:10hey, not today? A little frustrating. Maybe maybe you should look
- 2:16up some shows and stuff trackers dying right now. I just man, you
- 2:23you know, you get what you get and you don't throw a fit,
- 2:27and your show is your show. I mean, kid Rock came there,
- 2:29so I wonder what they told him, but he probably won't be back.
- 2:32I don't know. It's fine though, man, And I'm never dude.
- 2:36I I would never be like blatantly disrespect somebody or I don't know. I
- 2:42just I feel like handling those situations with some type of grace or at least
- 2:46finding a way to cut corners is completely fine because just you know, I
- 2:52feel like that's just a part of my show and that just it is what
- 2:54it is when it comes to big moments like that. Obviously, no strangers
- 3:00to an award show, and it feels even recently, it's like it's the
- 3:04Hardy and Laney show. Anytime you go somewhere because either both of you or
- 3:07at least one of you is going to clean up as you're you've been a
- 3:12part of it. I went through the list of accolades and I was like,
- 3:14how do you pick which one means the most? Because it's all I
- 3:17have an answer for that ACM Songwriter of the Year. That's that'll never nothing
- 3:23will ever beat that. I don't even think Entertainer of the Year will ever
- 3:25beat that for me what I moved here to be a songwriter and that there's
- 3:30like three or four goals that I've had and I like just as a Nashville
- 3:37songwriter, and that that one was like the top of the pyramid. So
- 3:40uh yeah, that and I just my everything. None of none of this
- 3:46would ever exist anything if there weren't songwriters and people writing songs that you play
- 3:50on the radio, that you get to perform live. And I just songs
- 3:53and songwriting is so special to me. And just to know that, you
- 3:57know, to have to win that for a year to the person and just
- 4:02feel all that hard work, you know, eight or nine, ten years
- 4:04of writing songs, and eight years of writing songs it never got you know,
- 4:08played or listened to or anything like that. Just it means a lot
- 4:11to me. I care a lot about songwriting. You talked about goals that
- 4:15you set and and and i'd imagine working with certain artists. We last time
- 4:19we caught up Kenny having it. What I think you said, Yeah,
- 4:23having a Kenny cut no spoken into existence. Well, so not only did
- 4:27you, it's been a big old hit and it's on its way to ringing
- 4:30the bell? Who else is on that list? Is that something you mind
- 4:33sharing? Like? Who else is on that list that you're like before I'm
- 4:36done, I gotta I gotta try and work with I Okay, Tim McGraw,
- 4:44I don't have a Tim mcgrawl cut at all. I surprisingly don't have
- 4:48a Luke Bryan cut and Luke colmbs I feel like those are the last three.
- 4:55I guess Laney too, I don't have a Laney cut. There's a
- 4:57lot, but when you ask that question, Tim McGraw is the first one
- 5:00that comes to mind. That's gotta happen, man, Dude. I ran
- 5:02into him at the rhyme and he was like, we gotta work together.
- 5:04And now I never got his numbers, so I've just been waiting to run
- 5:06into him again. We're gonna take him on social media. There's gonna be
- 5:10some DM Yeah, tell him to text me, dude, check the d
- 5:13ms. At some point here hanging out with Hardy, you're getting close to
- 5:16ringing the bell on a big song of your own. Did truck Bed feel
- 5:19like like it could go? Or did you just feel like it was the
- 5:23right song for you? Right? I never know, dude, I really
- 5:26don't want you know me. I mean like, I've always kind of taken
- 5:28a risk when it comes to single selection, and I feel like to a
- 5:31certain extent, but I just I don't know. You just never know.
- 5:36You always hope. So I do think that it's the hideous sounding song maybe
- 5:42I've put out, you know, like the funnest like one Beer sounded hitdty,
- 5:46but it was about a teenage pre pregnancy. So you just don't really
- 5:48You never really know. You know some people that are like, what yeah,
- 5:51yeah, yeah, I thought it was just about drinking beer. God,
- 5:55you're right, dude. I don't even know how many people think that,
- 6:00but you never know. But I had high expectations for it. It
- 6:02reacted so well when the record came out, and like you know, a
- 6:08lot of people you guys showed a lot of love like when we when it,
- 6:10when we send it out. So but here we are. I'm excited,
- 6:14dude, I'm excited for you. Uh tell me. I'm trying to
- 6:16do like a cliff Notes version in case they walk in the door any second.
- 6:19Uh take me through quit because this is a story you've told before.
- 6:25But what made you want to put it into music form? Man? I
- 6:28don't know. I I think part of just when I opened that book metaphorically,
- 6:36when I told that speech that night, I guess was at ACM honors.
- 6:40Uh, and it kind of went viral, and and I just thought,
- 6:44maybe you should elaborate on that a little bit more. And I just,
- 6:48dude, I was on my boat, I think, and I was
- 6:50like just singing stuff in my head and was like, what if you just
- 6:54and just the whole thing just sort of can't come to life in my head,
- 6:57and and I just was like, man, let's let's just tell it
- 7:00like and like tell it like a story kind of thing. And and it
- 7:03just turned into like a rap song. So I guess you call that.
- 7:06I don't know you call it, but listen, songs don't have lanes in
- 7:10my world. But anyway, I love that. That's a great quote.
- 7:13Uh take me through. Another thing I want to ask you is, obviously
- 7:15you and Morgan are tight. Why is that friendship? And now obviously Ernest
- 7:20is a part of that. It feels like jelly Roll has kind of become
- 7:23a part of that. Why as you guys have grown career wise together,
- 7:27has it been important to continue to work together because a lot of people don't
- 7:30go back to the well right Oh man, I dude, I I'm just
- 7:34dance with the one that brought you kind of thing, man, And we're
- 7:40all just like celebrating each other all the time. Dude. The last think,
- 7:43the last thing I texted Morgan was Dude, I just got off stage.
- 7:46I just played the Houston Rodeo and uh, we you know, and
- 7:49it's always something like that, And I just why would you not? Man?
- 7:56Those are the people that you became successful with, and those are the
- 7:59people that you you know, you write your best songs with. And I
- 8:03just I it's just been a no brainer for us to just always and we
- 8:07just we all knew each other when we had nothing. Dude, Me and
- 8:11Ernest and Morgan wrote more than my hometown maybe up Down had go number one,
- 8:16but we still like we're babies back then and that and that, like
- 8:18we just I don't know, we stick together when you come up, when
- 8:20you come from nothing and you all come up together, there's a bond that
- 8:24you have. And I'm the same way with Laney. Like you just there's
- 8:28some people that you just you went through it with them and you you know,
- 8:30you were all at one point like is this gonna work for any of
- 8:31us? Or are we going to be the people that move back home or
- 8:33whatever it is, and you just there's some sort of bond that you have
- 8:39when you go through stuff like that together. Last thing I want to ask
- 8:41you is, uh, the bar thing has become a big deal. And
- 8:45we talked about this with Kenny Chesney recently. He goes, it's funny because
- 8:48at one point it was like everyone had their own merch shop downtown. It
- 8:50was like this person had a Fancis, and now it's like everyone's got a
- 8:54bar Yeah, is that something in your wheelhouse at any point? Yes?
- 9:00How far? How far down? Two to three years? Yeah? Yeah,
- 9:05all right, that's all gonna asks. It's gonna happen. It's just
- 9:07we don't have there's I haven't signed a piece of paper or anything, but
- 9:11that's very very very much on my to do list for the next few years.
- 9:16God, that's gonna be sick. Yeah, we got a place in
- 9:18mind, dude, let's do it. We can't wait, Hearty, Thanks
- 9:20for hanging brother. Always a pleasure.
